The use of rare earth elements (REE) in permanent magnets (PMs) raises problems in several domains. The supply chain of these is fragile, the prices have shown volatility and its manufacturing has a bigger impact on climate change when compared to the manufacturing of other PMs. Instead, ferrite PMs have been researched as an alternative. This alternative shows a relatively higher demagnetisation risk when compared to REE PMs. Thus, a detailed study on permanent demagnetisation during winding faults is crucial. The authors use the finite element method to evaluate different machine designs, developed under mechanical constraints, and explore several strategies to mitigate permanent demagnetisation. Also, the importance of avoiding permanent demagnetisation is changed gradually in the optimisation process. The results show that the protection of the PM and performance optimisation are irreconcilable goals. It also highlights the impact of the stator design in decreasing demagnetisation. Additionally, it is shown that the classic notion of avoiding demagnetisation is an ineffective strategy for designing high‐performance machines with ferrite magnets, and instead, it should be integrated into the optimisation process and weighted according to the application demands. Large‐scale design optimisation techniques enable the design of high‐performance electric machines. Electromagnetic 3D finite element analysis (FEA) is typically employed in optimisation studies for accurate analysis of axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) machines, which require extensive computational resources. To reduce the computational burden, a FEA‐based mathematical method relying on the geometric and magnetic symmetry of coreless AFPM machines is proposed to estimate the machine performance indicators using the least number of FEA solutions, thereby significantly lowering the running time. This method is generally applicable to AFPM machines with low saturation effects and cogging torque as exemplified for a printed circuit board (PCB) stator coreless AFPM machine. To further reduce the computation time, a systematically simplified equivalent 3D FEA model for planar PCB coils integrated with this machine is also proposed. The practical implementation of the introduced method is elaborated based on an example optimisation study, and an analytical method for fast design scaling is also discussed. The results of the proposed approach are compared with detailed transient FEA results, and a prototype 26‐pole PCB stator coreless AFPM machine was also used to validate the results experimentally. One agent in such a modular motor drive consists of only a subset of the machine phases and power electronic converter modules, and is equipped with a dedicated controller. When the dc‐links of the different agents are connected in series to a single voltage source, giving rise to a so‐called stacked polyphase bridges converter, the power electronic converter components can have low voltage ratings. However, a voltage balancing controller must ensure that the total dc‐link voltage is distributed evenly among the agents when working in motoring mode. The goal of this research is to propose a multi‐agent voltage balancing algorithm based on dynamic average consensus, which depends solely on local computations, local measurements, and neighbour‐to‐neighbour communication. The scalability and reliability of the modular hardware are hence extended towards the control. The investigated machine is separated into stationary and rotational components by a polyether ether ketone sleeve. Liquid is directed into the stationary component to achieve a significant temperature reduction, at the same time, avoiding the liquid leakage into the rotating component that will cause an increase in friction losses. The FGs in the modular machine increase the contact area between coolant and machine components, resulting in better cooling efficiency. Abstract The permanent magnet eddy‐current coupler (PMEC) is a kind of non‐contact, stepless speed regulation device and has been widely used in transmissions. However, the current PMECs are coaxial and cannot achieve transmission and speed regulation in intersecting axes. An intersecting‐axis permanent magnet (PM) eddy current coupler (IPMEC), which consists of a disk‐type PM rotor and a barrel‐type conductive sheet (CS) rotor arranged with intersecting axes, is proposed. It generates eddy currents through the speed difference between the two rotors and uses the non‐contact electromagnetic force between the eddy currents and permanent magnets to transmit torque. During operation, the speed can be adjusted by altering the coupling area or air gap. A theoretical model of the IPMEC based on the equivalent magnetic circuit method is presented and verified by finite element simulation using ANSYS. Then, the effects of the pole number of the PMs, the radius of the CS rotor and the PM rotor on the performance were analysed, and the design method of the IPMEC was proposed. This study can be used to expand the application range of PMECs.

Abstract To facilitate the regulation of the air‐gap magnetic field of permanent magnet synchronous machines, a novel topology of a high‐speed hybrid excitation synchronous machine (HESM) was presented. The electromagnetic performance of the proposed HESM was evaluated. The air‐gap magnetic field regulation principle was introduced first. Then, a mathematical model of the HESM was established. Based on the characteristics of a 3D magnetic circuit, the HESM equalled three types of 2D magnetic circuit machines in axial parallel superposition, and thus the expressions of inductance parameters were deduced. Subsequently, the voltage regulation performance of the HESM was assessed according to the mathematical model and inductance parameters. The loss and efficiency were calculated. Finally, a HESM prototype was tested and verified.

Abstract A novel programmed hybrid spreading spectrum modulation method to mitigate electromagnetic interference (EMI) emission and bearing current in the context of miniaturised and lightweight synchronous machine drives is proposed. The proposed method adopts the combination of conventional pulsewidth modulation (PWM) and low common mode voltage PWM. The offline look‐up table for switching frequency is acquired by analysing the root mean square voltage values at different modulation indices and angles. By adjusting the switching frequency according to this table, the spectrum can be spread into the sidebands of the switching frequency, and the harmonic spike can be suppressed. To address the challenge of increased current ripple and harmonic distortion in high torque density motors under overload conditions, a motor model that considers the cross‐saturation and slotting effect is presented. This motor model is used to derive the switching frequency correction factors, aiming to mitigate the influence of saturation and slotting effect on harmonic amplification. The proposed method is well‐suited for controlling synchronous motors using three‐phase two‐level voltage source inverters. The simulation and experimental results validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, showcasing its advantages in terms of computational complexity reduction and significant attenuation of peak EMI currents.

Abstract Five‐phase permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) can operate under open‐circuit faults with the appropriate current regulations. However, the traditional current regulations based on the five‐phase half‐bridge inverter have to satisfy the constraint of zero neutral point current, which limits the fault‐tolerant performance of the machine. Thus, this paper investigates the current regulation based on the five‐phase six‐leg (FPSL) inverter, which relieves the zero‐neutral point current limitation, and both current regulations considering the maximum torque (MT) and minimum copper loss (MC) are derived under different open‐circuit conditions. The cost of the system has increased, but with the new regulations, better fault‐tolerant operation capability of the machine can be obtained under all kinds of open‐circuit faults. Moreover, with the introduction of the neutral point current, the machine can work under triple‐phase open‐circuit faults. In conclusion, the proposed control scheme based on the FPSL inverter expands the fault‐tolerant operation capability of the five‐phase PMSM. The experiment results prove the effectiveness of the proposed current regulation on increasing average torque or reducing copper loss under fault‐tolerant operation.

Abstract A novel asymmetric delta‐type and Spoke‐type interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (ASD‐IPM) is proposed for electric vehicles (EVs) application that uses the magnetic field shifting technique to maximise the average torque and lessen torque ripples. The proposed ASD‐IPM is deduced from the conventional asymmetric spoke and V‐shape IPM by attaching additional asymmetric flux barriers (AFB) to the left side of the spoke‐type PMs and to the other side of the delta‐type PMs. This configuration helps in reducing the leakage flux and achieving good flux concentration. The proposed design is optimised through a Genetic Algorithm (GA) to investigate the electromagnetic performances at no‐load and on‐load conditions. Also, the efficiency maps of both the proposed design and conventional design are analysed and compared. The results show that the proposed ASD‐AIPM has superior efficiency and a favorable torque profile, making it a suitable choice for electric vehicle applications. Furthermore, the proposed design is rescaled to the Toyota Prius 2010 design, with the only change in the slot/pole pair combination due to the presence of spoke‐PMs in the proposed design. The proposed ASD‐IPM achieves 7% higher torque than the existing Toyota Prius 2010 model. The efficiency maps of the rescaled design are also analysed and compared.

In this paper, three typical permanent magnet machines for All-Electric aircraft propulsion are designed, optimized and compared. Firstly, the necessary performances are determined based on the requirements of high power/torque density and an aircraft with a maximum takeoff weight of 1500 kg. The initial structures of interior permanent magnet (IPM) synchronous machine, vernier permanent magnet (VPM) machine and flux-switching permanent magnet (FSPM) machine are designed with identical stator outer radius and rotor shaft length. Then, parametric sensitivity analysis and multi-objective particle swarm are combined as an optimization methodology to optimize these machines. Based on the finite element analysis, the electromagnetic performances such as no-load airgap flux density harmonic spectrum, cogging torque, average output torque, losses, efficiency and power factor, etc., are generally compared and analyzed. Subsequently, the discussions are carried out, where the strength and weakness of these three machines are concluded and the future prospects are suggested. Finally, it is concluded that if effective measures are implemented to reduce the permanent magnet eddy current loss and improve the power factor, the VPM machine would be the most suitable choice among these machines for All-Electric aircraft propulsion. This article presents a detailed study on the diagnosis of rotor faults in an Interior Permanent Magnet Machine based on a mathematical model. The authors provided a wide literature review, mentioning the fault diagnosis methods used for Permanent Magnet Machines. The research emphasizes the necessity of precise assumptions regarding winding construction to accurately analyze the additional harmonics appearing in rotor faults caused by electromotive force (EMF), i.e., rotor eccentricity and magnet damage. The article also discusses specific features appearing in the spectrum of air gap permeance functions and the impact of rotor eccentricity and magnet damage on PM flux density distribution and as a consequence on EMF stator windings. The novelty of the presented content is the analysis of induced EMFs for cases of the simultaneous occurrence of rotor eccentricity and PM damage. In high-speed electrical machines (HSEM), mechanical vibration associated with critical speeds of rotor systems can be detrimental to the machine operational stability, especially for vibration near resonances. The structural sizing of a rotor system is often constrained to its mechanical parameters, such as its overall weight, maximum torque, and rated power, which complicate the design, necessitating an iterative design optimization process. This work presents a systematic and iterative rotor structural sizing optimization methodology that incorporates semi-analytical and numerical modeling, specifically taking into account multiple mechanical design parameters from the static, rotordynamic, and electromagnetic-thermal evaluation. The proposed methodology provides an effective design optimization procedure for a general application of HSEM to accelerate its design process, by which the power density and the dynamics stability during high-speed operation are optimized simultaneously. A parametric analysis was carried out where a 24-kW, 12,000-rpm aviation starter-generator was optimized. It was demonstrated that the power density of the machine could be increased by 14.7% from 2.3 to 2.6 kW/kg, while the critical speed was increased by 128.6% from 1,400 to 3,200 Hz. Wind power generation system with five-phase PMSG contains a large amount of third harmonic in the stator phase current of the machine side due to the dead-time effect of the converter and non-sinusoidal air-gap magnetic field. Harmonic suppression strategy is proposed to reduce output harmonics and improve the system's power quality. Firstly, the extended Clark&Park matrix was analyzed and applied to FPMSG for dq decoupling control, and a mathematical model of the generator containing the fundamental and third harmonic subspace is obtained. Secondly, the third harmonic model of the stator current was analyzed. Based on the PI controller, a control strategy for the third harmonic subspace dual closedloop control and the introduction of a harmonic compensation module into the feedback loop was designed. The dual closedloop PI controller was used to adjust the dq-axis current signals without static error, and the harmonic compensation module was used to offset the accompanying harmonic voltage. Finally, a direct drive F-PMSG wind power generation system under maximum power point tracking was built in the Matlab/Simulink environment. Abstract Axial Flux‐Switching Permanent Magnet motors are broadly used in various industrial applications due to their high torque density and low rotor inertia. However, one major drawback of these motors is their cogging torque, which results in torque ripple and vibration. Existing methods for reducing cogging torque have often led to a decrease in useful electromagnetic torque, thereby compromising motor efficiency. To address this issue, a novel hybrid structure for the simultaneous improvement of cogging torque and electromagnetic torque in Axial Flux‐Switching Permanent Magnet motors is presented. The proposed structure combines the optimal arc coefficient of the rotor pole technique with the notching rotor technique, resulting in a new motor configuration that exhibits both reduced cogging torque and increased torque density. Analytical equations for calculating cogging torque are derived, and 3D finite element analysis is conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed structure design. Furthermore, the optimal values of the arc coefficient and forming angle of the rotor pole are determined using the Taguchi analysis. Comparing the results of the optimal motor structure with the previous design shows that the new structure can improve the cogging torque, average electromagnetic torque, torque ripple, torque density, and peak torque output of the motor, which confirms the effectiveness of the proposed structure.

Abstract In‐plane eddy‐current loss in permanent‐magnet synchronous machines has been comprehensively and analytically studied by using three‐dimensional (3D) finite element method. Considering the accuracy and calculation time, the electrical conductivity in the stack direction should be set to zero in 3D analysis. Stacking factor is also an important analytical parameter in this kind of calculation. The influences of slot number and coil‐end height have been clarified. Harmonics caused by an inverter in pulse‐width‐modulation or one‐pulse mode result in additional in‐plane eddy‐current loss, which is independent of the slot number. This behaviour can be explained by a theoretical equation of the eddy‐current loss. These results are useful for the analysis and design of highly efficient electrical machines.

Abstract Controlling the Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) can be challenging due to the nonlinearity of its dynamics, which makes it difficult to design control strategies that are both robust and effective. To address this challenge, this paper presents a novel control strategy rooted in the concept of passivity that combines field‐oriented control (FOC). This strategy compels the PMSM to accurately follow velocity and electrical torque trajectories. The approach, known as passivity‐based control (PBC), entails reshaping the inherent system energy while introducing the necessary damping to attain the desired objectives. A crucial aspect involves identifying workless force terms within the process model. Despite their presence, these terms do not impact the energy balance and stability properties. As a result, eliminating these terms is unnecessary. This simplicity in control architecture not only preserves system stability but also bolsters overall robustness. The system's overall stability and the current tracking error's exponential convergence have both been demonstrated analytically. In order to maintain stability, the controller accounts for the nonlinearities of the plant and approximates the unstructured dynamics of the PMSM. The proposed control is designed using the dq model of the PMSM, which avoids the model's structure destruction due to singularities, since the dq model does not depend explicitly on the rotor angular position. Experimental results shown further, illustrate speed and position control with a desired pair calculated by a filter or a proportional‐integral (PI) controller for speed control and a proportional‐integral‐derivative (PID) controller for position control. Also the correlation between practical and theoretical results is given as well as the robustness test in relation to the uncertainties of the PMSM's inertia moment. The results demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed strategy in controlling the PMSM under different operating conditions, highlighting its potential for industrial applications.

Abstract A new analytic model for calculating of the air‐gap flux density (AGFD) of surface‐mounted permanent magnet synchronous machines (SMPMSMs) is presented. This proposed model is capable to taking into account the effects of magnetic saturation, armature reaction and stator slots opening. Furthermore, the real form of air‐gap distribution and spatial distribution of flux density of the PM poles are considered. The armature reaction effect is modeled using phasor diagram analysis of the motor as a function of the load torque, the armature current amplitude, power factor and the inverse air gap length. Also, saturation phenomenon predicted using the new non‐linear proposed function in connection with the armature reaction effects and the properties of the lamination material. It is shown that the proposed model capable to predicting acceptably the air gap flux density waveform of the SMPMSMs at lagging and leading power factors and with the load torque variation. The presented analytical approach is verified by the two‐dimensional finite‐element analysis (FEA) results.

Multiphase Fractional Slot Concentrated Windings (FSCWs) are an attractive potential solution in the design of permanent-magnet synchronous machines as they combine the advantages of multiphase windings, such as power segmentation and fault tolerance, with the benefits of FSCWs, like high manufacturability and short end coils. The adoption of multiphase FSCWs is limited by the fact that, according to the existing literature, their symmetrical implementation is possible only for specific sets of slot-pole combinations. The main contribution of the paper is to set forth a method which, resorting to multi-layer arrangements (wherein multiple coils belonging to different phases may be wound on the same tooth), makes it possible to design a symmetrical multiphase FSCW with a theoretically arbitrary number of slots, poles and phases. To this end, an innovative design procedure, based on linear programming and simplex method, is presented as an alternative to the conventional star-of-slot technique to achieve a symmetrical FSCW with any number of slots, poles and phases. For illustration purposes, the proposed procedure is applied to design both a six-phase (dual three-phase) FSCW and a five-phase FSCW for a surface-mounted permanent magnet machine with 9 slots and 8 poles. Both the FSCWs are considered as not feasible according to the present literature and cannot be designed using the star-of-slot technique. The paper shows that, adopting the new proposed approach, the two windings can be designed in a symmetrical form achieving reasonably high winding factors (0.967 and 0.959 in the six-phase and five-phase case, respectively). The results are validated through Finite Element Analysis (FEA) simulations, whose accuracy and reliability are preliminarily assessed by comparison against experimental tests on a laboratory prototype.

A novel implantable total artificial heart, hereinafter referred to as the ShuttlePump, is currently under development in a research collaboration between the Medical University of Vienna, the Power Electronic Systems Laboratory of ETH Zurich and Charite Berlin. Its novel, low-complexity, pulsatile pumping principle requires a specially shaped piston performing a controlled, synchronized linear-rotary motion while providing the necessary hydraulic force and torque. The machine design of the Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine (PMSM)-based linear-rotary actuator was conducted in previous work of the authors, leading to the construction of a hardware prototype satisfying the application requirements in terms of electromechanical force, torque, power losses, and volume. This article provides the details of the closed-loop linear-rotary position control system required to operate the ShuttlePump. The design of the position control system targets tight reference tracking ($\pm$8 mm linear stroke and continuous rotation) up to an operational frequency of 5 Hz, under the heavy disturbance introduced by the axial hydraulic load force, as high as 45 N. The experimental measurements show successful linear-rotary position tracking under the specified axial load, with a maximum error of 1 mm and 5$^{\circ }$.

Controlling the Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) can be challenging due to the nonlinearity of its dynamics, which makes it difficult to design control strategies that are both robust and effective. To address this challenge, this paper presents a novel control strategy rooted in the concept of passivity that combines field‐oriented control (FOC). This strategy compels the PMSM to accurately follow velocity and electrical torque trajectories. The approach, known as passivity‐based control (PBC), entails reshaping the inherent system energy while introducing the necessary damping to attain the desired objectives. A crucial aspect involves identifying workless force terms within the process model. Despite their presence, these terms do not impact the energy balance and stability properties. As a result, eliminating these terms is unnecessary. This simplicity in control architecture not only preserves system stability but also bolsters overall robustness. The system's overall stability and the current tracking error's exponential convergence have both been demonstrated analytically. In order to maintain stability, the controller accounts for the nonlinearities of the plant and approximates the unstructured dynamics of the PMSM. The proposed control is designed using the dq model of the PMSM, which avoids the model's structure destruction due to singularities, since the dq model does not depend explicitly on the rotor angular position. Experimental results shown further, illustrate speed and position control with a desired pair calculated by a filter or a proportional‐integral (PI) controller for speed control and a proportional‐integral‐derivative (PID) controller for position control. Also the correlation between practical and theoretical results is given as well as the robustness test in relation to the uncertainties of the PMSM's inertia moment. The results demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed strategy in controlling the PMSM under different operating conditions, highlighting its potential for industrial applications. Axial Flux‐Switching Permanent Magnet motors are broadly used in various industrial applications due to their high torque density and low rotor inertia. However, one major drawback of these motors is their cogging torque, which results in torque ripple and vibration. Existing methods for reducing cogging torque have often led to a decrease in useful electromagnetic torque, thereby compromising motor efficiency. To address this issue, a novel hybrid structure for the simultaneous improvement of cogging torque and electromagnetic torque in Axial Flux‐Switching Permanent Magnet motors is presented. The proposed structure combines the optimal arc coefficient of the rotor pole technique with the notching rotor technique, resulting in a new motor configuration that exhibits both reduced cogging torque and increased torque density. Analytical equations for calculating cogging torque are derived, and 3D finite element analysis is conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed structure design. Furthermore, the optimal values of the arc coefficient and forming angle of the rotor pole are determined using the Taguchi analysis. Comparing the results of the optimal motor structure with the previous design shows that the new structure can improve the cogging torque, average electromagnetic torque, torque ripple, torque density, and peak torque output of the motor, which confirms the effectiveness of the proposed structure. In‐plane eddy‐current loss in permanent‐magnet synchronous machines has been comprehensively and analytically studied by using three‐dimensional (3D) finite element method. Considering the accuracy and calculation time, the electrical conductivity in the stack direction should be set to zero in 3D analysis. Stacking factor is also an important analytical parameter in this kind of calculation. The influences of slot number and coil‐end height have been clarified. Harmonics caused by an inverter in pulse‐width‐modulation or one‐pulse mode result in additional in‐plane eddy‐current loss, which is independent of the slot number. This behaviour can be explained by a theoretical equation of the eddy‐current loss. These results are useful for the analysis and design of highly efficient electrical machines. In many high-speed electrical machines, centrifugal forces within the rotor can be first-order constraints on electromagnetic optimization. This can be particularly acute in interior permanent magnet (IPM) machines in which magnets are usually retained entirely by the rotor core with no additional mechanical containment. This study investigates the nature of the trade-off between mechanical and electromagnetic requirements within the context of an eight-pole, 100 kW IPM machine with a base speed of 4000 rpm and an extended speed range up to 12,000 rpm. A series of mechanical and electromagnetic models are used to estimate the level of shaft interference, mechanical stress in critical regions of the rotor and the impact of various features and dimensions within the machine on electromagnetic torque. A systematic exploration of the design space is undertaken for rotor diameters from 120 mm to 180 mm, with optimal designs in terms of torque per unit length established at each diameter while meeting the constraints imposed on mechanical stress. The final preferred design has a rotor of 165 mm and an axial length of 103 mm long with a fractional slot winding in a 30-slot stator. The overall machine has an active mass of 42.3 kg, which corresponds to ~2.4 kW/kg. Abstract Magnetic‐geared double‐rotor machines are recognized as a promising power‐splitting component in hybrid electric aircrafts (HEAs). However, the high fuel efficiency speed of the turbine engine in HEAs is about 10,000 rpm, whereas conventional topologies suffer from low efficiency at high speed due to its specific operation principle—the magnetic field modulating principle. A coreless stator magnetic‐geared double‐rotor machine (CS‐MGDRM) is proposed to enhance high‐speed efficiency and thus comply with the operation condition of HEAs. First, the machine structure and hybrid propulsion system configuration are introduced, and power‐flow analysis of three basic operation modes is presented. Second, the operation principle of the machine is illustrated, and investigation of electromagnetic performances is carried out by finite element analysis. Third, an analytical model of the machine is developed, based on which the design optimization towards the maximum torque capacity is investigated. Furthermore, the loss distribution law and transmission efficiency are analysed and compared with conventional scheme, and the power factor characteristic is investigated as well. Finally, the overall performance of the proposed machine is evaluated.

Abstract This paper presents the development of an Air‐Cored Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Generator (ACAF PMG) integrated for direct battery charging scheme for urban and rural micro‐wind turbine applications rated at 1 kW. The proposed generator has a Single Stator Double Rotor configuration with a relatively short axial length. In this paper, the analytical model for generator sizing is presented and the main parameters are defined. Novel analytical model is presented to determine the required number of turns for each phase in order to produce a balanced voltage in the three phases. The generator is electromagnetically analyzed using Finite Element model and simulated using Matlab/Simulink to predict its performance under several operating conditions. The effect of retainment ring type on the generator performance is also demonstrated. The machine is harnessed to a battery bank via a three‐phase fully controlled converter using six bridge thyristors to regulate the output voltage delivered from the generator to the battery. Generator model and simulation results are validated via experimental tests. The preliminary experimental results showed a good match with the simulation results. Moreover, the proposed machine is compared favourably with other counter machines of similar configuration and power ratings in terms of machine size, power‐to‐weight ratio, and voltage regulation. This paper therefore demonstrates the concrete benefits of utilizing the axial flux PMG in scavenging energy to generate electrical power from micro wind turbines.

Abstract Aiming at the output current distortion problem in the low frequency operation of permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive system of modular multilevel converter (MMC), the essential relationship between the output current distortion and the injected components is analyzed in this paper. A current harmonic suppression method combining feedforward and feedback compensation is proposed. Firstly, the feedback control method is applied to transform the MMC three‐phase output current into the dq rotating coordinate system at fundamental frequency ω. The harmonics of the AC terms to be suppressed are filtered out. The dominant fundamental frequency component turned into the DC term is retained. Then combined with feedforward control, the control performance of the system is improved. Secondly, the deadbeat predictive current control is improved by introducing an integral link in it. System disturbances caused by parameter changes can be compensated in real time. The design of the control system is simplified and the static error is reduced. Meanwhile, the system has the advantages of small torque pulsation and fast speed response. Finally, the PMSM drive system model of the 11‐level MMC is built in MATLAB/Simulink. The correctness and effectiveness of the proposed suppression method are verified.

The aim of this article is to develop a rotor reconstruction method for the V‐shaped interior permanent magnet (IPM) machine so that the subdomain method to analytically calculate the air‐gap flux density can be applied. With the proposed method, the V‐shaped IPM rotor with rectangular magnets, magnetic barriers, and saturated iron bridges can be transformed into a U‐shaped equivalent analytical model. The geometry and material parameters of the magnets in the equivalent U‐shaped model can be determined according to the flux equivalence in the air‐gap of the motor. Then using the subdomain method on the U‐shaped equivalent rotor, the static magnetic field problem can be solved and the flux density distribution in the air‐gap be obtained. The validity of this method and accuracy of the solution is verified by the finite element method with case studies. Compared with existing methods, the improved subdomain method has higher accuracy in calculating flux density including radial and tangential components. The presented rotor reconstruction method is not only limited to single‐layer V‐shaped rotor, it can also be applied to other IPM rotors with more complex structures. Abstract The contra‐rotating machine (CRM) has been a preferable selection of the contra‐rotating propulsion system (CRPS) owing to its high efficiency, high compactness, and low noise. However, the conventional CRM with rotating stator has the problem of brush and slip ring, and the conventional brushless CRM has the problem of coordinated control of equal and opposite torque. Aiming at the above problems, this article proposes a transverse‐dislocated magnetic‐field modulated brushless contra‐rotating machine (TDMFM‐BCRM). The proposed TDMFM‐BCRM has some advantages of no rotating winding, no associated brushes and slip rings, and equal and opposite torques at any time, therefore it has good potential for the CRPS. The working principle of the TDMFM‐BCRM including three dimensional magnetic‐field modulated theory, back electromotive force (EMF) generation, and torque relation is studied. Then, the influences of main parameters including magnetic block parameters and PM sizes on torques are investigated. The critical electromagnetic performances of the TDMFM‐BCRM are analysed. A prototype of TDMFM‐BCRM is manufactured and measured to validate the above analysis. Finally, the comparison of the TDMFM‐BCRM and the existing schemes are analysed.

Abstract In this article, a hybrid analytical model for a quasi‐regular polygon rotor (QPR) is proposed. It mainly uses the subdomain method and conformal mapping to solve a non‐circular boundary in the QPR. Firstly, the subdomain method combined with an equivalent surface current method is used to calculate the air‐gap magnetic field considering a slotted stator with a circular rotor. Secondly, by segmenting the non‐circular boundary in the QPR, the complex relative air‐gap permeance of the QPR can be calculated using the conformal mapping. Thirdly, this complex relative air‐gap permeance modifies the air‐gap magnetic field calculated in the first step to obtain the actual magnetic field distributions. Consequently, no‐load and loaded air‐gap flux densities, back‐electromotive force and torque can be obtained. A 12‐pole/3‐phase permanent magnet motor is modelled using the proposed hybrid analytical model, which is validated by finite‐element analysis and experiment. This proposed hybrid analytical model presents a new way of processing the QPR. Its calculation speed is nearly 50 times faster than the finite‐element analysis, which is of great help to the initial design and optimisation of machines with QPRs.

Abstract A multi‐phase permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) with fractional‐slot windings is proposed to reduce electromagnetic vibration and improve torque performance. Firstly, the analytical expression of electromagnetic force is derived, and the stator teeth modulation effect of electromagnetic force is introduced. The spatial order of the electromagnetic force and the stator teeth modulation are closely related to the slot‐pole combination of the PMSM. Then, three PMSMs with different slot‐pole combinations are presented, and they represent fractional‐slot concentrated winding, integral‐slot distributed winding and fractional‐slot distributed winding, respectively. Their torque performance and electromagnetic vibration performance are studied and compared considering stator teeth modulation. In addition, the multi‐phase winding technology is adopted to further improve the torque performance of the proposed PMSM. Finally, a 90s20p PMSM is manufactured, and the finite element method and experimental method are used to verify the proposed low vibration design method.

Abstract This article presents a novel method for fastly obtaining orthotropic material parameters in permanent magnet synchronous motor. First, a theoretical model of the equivalent single cylindrical shell is introduced with three orthotropic material parameters by considering the orthotropic characteristics of the motor. Then, the relationship of three orthotropic material parameters and the axial mode order m, the radial mode order n and modal frequency f is established. On this basis, an analytical method with m = 0 is proposed to acquire three values, and its adaptability is pointed out. Meanwhile, based on the above obtained orthotropic material parameters, the calculation method of modal frequencies is presented. Finally, the modal test and finite‐element method are implemented to verify the rationality of the proposed method.

Abstract A general analytical model is developed in a concise block matrix form for surface‐mounted permanent magnet (SPM) machines with series‐parallel coil connections under inter‐turn short circuit (ITSC) fault. In the model, branch currents are used as state variables and inductances of different series‐parallel coil connections are calculated using an analytical method, namely winding function approach (WFA) together with slot permeance method. Based on the characteristics of the calculated inductances and the developed fault model, the multiphase Clarke transformation has been proposed to simplify the fault model. In the process of model simplification, the healthy machine model using branch currents as state variables have been proven to be equivalent to that using 3‐phase currents as state variables. The proposed fault models of a 3kW 96‐slot 32‐pole SPM machine with different series‐parallel coil connections have been built in Matlab/Simulink and validated by time‐stepping 2D FE simulations. Simulation results show that different series‐parallel coil connections have little influence on the amplitude of the ITSC current. Finally, a small scale 24‐slot 8‐pole SPM machine prototype has been built to further validate the accuracy of the proposed fault model.

Abstract Recently the new topologies of the permanent magnet (PM) motor attract a lot of attention. These newly introduced PM motors are not mature in design aspects and suffer from different perspectives. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a common design procedure to overcome these drawbacks. One of the common problems with newly introduced PM motors is the phenomenon of irreversible demagnetisation (ID) at high temperatures. So, a solution to this problem will be presented. The recently introduced ring winding axial flux PM (RWAFPM) motor is considered as a case study. First, a modified approach for modelling ID is introduced. Then, the effect of rotor geometry parameters on the ID of the RWAFPM motor is discussed. Finally, developed multi‐level multi‐objective design optimisation considering ID is presented based on the developed Taguchi method.

This article presents a detailed study on the diagnosis of rotor faults in an Interior Permanent Magnet Machine based on a mathematical model. The authors provided a wide literature review, mentioning the fault diagnosis methods used for Permanent Magnet Machines. The research emphasizes the necessity of precise assumptions regarding winding construction to accurately analyze the additional harmonics appearing in rotor faults caused by electromotive force (EMF), i.e., rotor eccentricity and magnet damage. The article also discusses specific features appearing in the spectrum of air gap permeance functions and the impact of rotor eccentricity and magnet damage on PM flux density distribution and as a consequence on EMF stator windings. The novelty of the presented content is the analysis of induced EMFs for cases of the simultaneous occurrence of rotor eccentricity and PM damage. The findings of this study provide valuable insights for the diagnosis and understanding of internal asymmetries in Interior PM Machines.
