Given the rapid expansion of the wind energy sector, many wind farms are being constructed in regions susceptible to earthquakes, making it crucial to assess the seismic fragility of wind turbines. However, limited research efforts have been devoted to investigating the influence of earthquake ground motion types on the responses of wind turbines. In the present study, an elaborate three-dimensional finite element model of an example wind turbine is developed using ABAQUS, and the dynamic responses of the wind turbine under four types of ground motion are recorded in the same earthquake, namely a near-field pulse-like record with the forward-directivity effect ground motion, a near-field pulse-like record with the fling-step effect ground motion, a near-field non-pulse ground motion, and a far-field ground motion, are analysed and compared. In addition, an investigation is carried out into the influence of permanent ground displacement on the seismic responses of the wind turbine. Following that, the fragility curves for the specified damage states of the wind turbine tower are constructed, considering different ground motion types and pulse periods. The results show that the seismic responses of wind turbines are significantly influenced by the ground motion type and pulse period, while the permanent ground displacement has a marginal effect. Case studies of pipeline repairs following extreme ground movement events demonstrate how the displacement accommodating mechanisms of hybrid-segmented pipelines perform favorably (requiring less repairs to maintain serviceability) compared with traditional pipeline systems. Hybrid-segmented pipelines utilize a joint-locking mechanism that allows a pipe segment to move a prescribed displacement before engaging the next segment of pipe. Given the recent emergence of these technologies, there is a need to understand how these systems respond to relative movement between the pipeline system and soil because this interaction directly impacts the soil resistance accumulated along the joint and at the connections. Frictional resistance along a pipe barrel and the passive resistance developed at the face of an enlarged connection can be quantified for a single pipe segment; however, the development of these forces along a pipeline system, composed of multiple segments, is dependent on how the pipeline accommodates induced displacements. This study establishes an analytical framework that captures the displacement accommodation mechanisms of hybrid-segmented pipelines under axial ground movement and estimates the subsequent accumulations of resistance (frictional and passive) along the system. The proposed framework determines how a series of pipe segments engage and the subsequent total resistance developed based on inputs for pipe, connection, and soil properties. The proposed framework is validated with established numerical models and previous analytical approaches, demonstrating favorable comparisons. Although previous analytical models can estimate the total geotechnical demands on a pipeline system for various levels of ground movement, the proposed analytical framework is able to capture the allowable displacement and joint-locking mechanisms that uniquely differentiate hybrid-segmented systems from traditional pipelines. The analytical framework presented in this study can be used by designed engineers to make informed decisions on which pipeline systems are best suited for various conditions and ground movement scenarios. It is of great significance to explore the influence of the collision effect between the main beam and the transverse shear key on the seismic response of the bridge under fault dislocation. In this paper, a series of cross-fault ground motions with different ground permanent displacements are artificially synthesized using a hybrid simulation method. Based on the contact element theory, the Kelvin–Voigt model is used to simulate the lateral collision effect. The effect of lateral collision on the seismic response of the continuous girder bridge is compared from the two aspects of fault dislocation position and fault dislocation degree. On this basis, the analysis of lateral collision parameters is carried out with the aim of reasonably regulating the seismic response of the structure. The results show that, compared with the near-fault bridge, the influence of lateral collision on the cross-fault bridge is stronger. The amplification of the bending moment of the central pier and the limitation of the bearing displacement are five times and two times, respectively, for the near-fault bridge. When the fault has a large dislocation, the weak point of the structural damage is the bending failure of the pier bottom and the residual torsion after the earthquake. The collision parameters of conventional bridges will aggravate the bending moment demand of the pier bottom of cross-fault bridges and limit their bearing displacement too much. Therefore, by appropriately reducing the collision stiffness and increasing the initial gap, the internal force and displacement response distribution of the cross-fault bridge structure can be more reasonable. The 2008 Mw 7.9 Wenchuan earthquake, one of the largest continental intraplate events instrumentally recorded, struck the central part of Sichuan Province in southwestern China causing great destruction and loss of life but also providing a wealth of seismological data, geodetic measurements, and tectonic observations. The Wenchuan earthquake ruptured two northwest‐dipping imbricate oblique reverse faults along the middle segment of the Longmenshan fault zone—a northeast‐trending thrust belt located at the boundary between the Tibetan Plateau and the Sichuan Basin. In this study, a hybrid approach that combines deterministic modeling at low frequencies with stochastic modeling at high frequencies is used to simulate broadband ground motions at 52 strong‐motion stations and 506 geodetic sites in the vicinity of the causative fault. The low‐frequency components of the synthetic ground motion are simulated using an extended kinematic source model embedded in a layered medium, whereas the high‐frequency components are generated using a stochastic finite‐fault model. The two independently derived ground‐motion components are then combined using matched filtering at a crossover frequency of 0.8 Hz to generate broadband ground‐motion time histories and response spectra. The temporal and spectral characteristics of the synthetic and recorded ground motions at the 52 strong‐motion stations are compared and the effect of soil nonlinearity on the simulated ground motions is investigated through 1‐D nonlinear site response analysis. Finally, the simulated permanent ground displacements at the 506 geodetic sites are evaluated against geodetic observations and the peak amplitudes of the synthetic ground motions at the same locations are compared with predictions of empirical ground‐motion models. Long-distance pipelines are one of the primary means of oil and gas transportation. During the construction process, long-distance pipelines are inevitably buried across geohazard zones, which potentially generate permanent ground displacements. These ground displacements can potentially induce excessive strains in the pipe posing a great threat to the pipe’s safety and integrity. In this study, a new numerical methodology for the response analysis of pipes subjected to ground displacements is proposed based on the finite difference method. Simulating the pipeline as a large deformation Euler Bernoulli beam, the finite difference method is used to solve the two interacting nonlinear differential equations of equilibrium in the longitudinal and lateral directions considering the nonlinear pipe-soil interaction induced by the ground displacement. Implemented using the nonlinear equation solver of FindRoot by Mathematica for solving nonlinear equations, the longitudinal strain along the pipeline can be subsequently derived, and the tensile and compressive strain demands can be therefore determined for engineering reference. Finally, the applicability of this method is validated based on two hypothetical study cases involving symmetric and non-symmetric soil resistance on the lateral direction of the pipe. Comparing the results with the finite element analysis solver Abaqus, we demonstrate that this present methodology has excellent predictive capabilities. Our study is carried out for elastic response calculation, but the proposed method shows a great promise for further development involving material nonlinearity, which is appropriate for the preliminary safety evaluation for the design of new pipelines or for risk prescreening of existing pipelines.

The evaluation of ground displacement hazard requires great effort, empirical evidence, and sufficient data for the characterization of the fault activity and capability to cause permanent surface displacement. There are practical cases when the fault at the site area revealed to be active, and, despite this, there are no sufficient data for the evaluation of permanent ground displacements hazard and for judging on the safety significance of permanent ground displacement. For these cases, a methodology is proposed that is based on the seismotectonic modelling and results of the probabilistic seismic hazard analysis. The method provides conservative assessment of the annual probability of fault displacement that allows the decision whether permanent displacement hazard is relevant to nuclear power plant safety. The definition of the displacement for the margin evaluation is also proposed. The feasibility of safe design is also demonstrated for the proposed definition of design basis hazard via qualitative judgement on the sensitivity of the structures, systems and components ensuring the fundamental safety functions with respect to the permanent ground displacement that is supported by existing case studies. Post-earthquake surveys show that fault-crossing simply supported beam bridges or continuous beam bridges suffer from severe seismic damage, such as falling beams and even collapse. Currently, there is a lack of understanding of the seismic performance of fault-crossing prestressed concrete rigid-frame bridges (PCRFBs). In this study, a representative PCRFB was used as a case study, and typical strike-slip fault cases were discussed, including fault-crossing angles and permanent displacement. The results revealed that different from other bridge structure types, the mid-span section was prone to yield failure because of the significant plastic deformation demands when the fault crossed the middle span. Positive and negative moment failures of the mid-span girder occurred when the fault-crossing angle was greater than or less than 90°, respectively. The fault-crossing angle is an important factor that affects the seismic performance of PCRFBs. A value of 90° is a favorable fault-crossing angle with minimal damage. The deformation demands of the mid-span were larger than the internal force effects when there was an increase in the permanent ground displacement of the fault. The proposed shock-absorbing hinge system (SAHS) can effectively reduce the vertical displacement of the girder and can significantly avoid the occurrence of plastic hinges, so the main girder is protected. • The failure modes with the strike-slip fault crossing the middle span of PC rigid-frame bridges (PCRFB) were studied. • The mid-span section was prone to yield failure when the fault crossed the middle span. • The setting shock-absorbing hinge system (SAHS) in the mid-span for adapting to fault displacement was provided. • The proposed SAHS can effectively avoid the occurrence of plastic hinges. This paper presents the results of three full-scale experiments performed on segmental concrete pipelines subjected to permanent ground displacement. The first pipeline was made of reinforced concrete pipes and the second pipeline was made of steel fibre-reinforced concrete pipes. The third pipeline was made of a combination of fibre-reinforced and reinforced concrete pipes. An array of sensing techniques was used to assess the damage evolution in pipelines and their overall performance. Three stages of damage were observed. In the first stage, damage was concentrated in the joints near the fault line. In the second stage, the damage occurred in all joints along the pipeline. While in the first two stages damage was mainly concentrated at the bell and spigot joints of the pipe segments, the third stage of damage was characterised by severe damage and rupture of the body of pipe segments located in the immediate vicinity of the fault line. The modes of failure for the plain and fibre-reinforced concrete pipelines were similar in the first and second stages of damage. However, in the pipeline constructed using both plain and fibre-reinforced concrete pipe segments, the damage was concentrated in the standard reinforced concrete pipe segments. High-pass filtering not only removes the low-frequency noise from the near-fault ground motion records, but also eliminates the permanent ground displacement and reduces the dynamic ground displacement. This may considerably influence the calculated seismic response of a spatially extended engineering structure crossing a fault rupture zone. To demonstrate the importance of incorporating permanent ground displacements in the analysis and design of extended structures under specific fault crossing conditions, the dynamic response of a seismically isolated bridge located in the vicinity of a surface fault rupture (“Case A”) or crossing a fault rupture zone (“Case B”) is calculated by utilizing a near-fault ground motion record processed with and without a displacement offset. The seismically isolated bridge considered in this study is a 10-span continuous structure supported by 11 piers, resembling a typical segment of the 2.3 km long Bolu Viaduct 1 located in west-central Turkey. The Lucerne Valley record from the 1992 M w 7.2 Landers earthquake, which preserves a permanent ground displacement in the fault-parallel direction and exhibits a large velocity pulse in the fault-normal direction, is used as the basis for investigating the effect of high-pass filtering on the dynamic response of the bridge. For the seismically isolated bridge located in the vicinity of the surface fault rupture (“Case A”), the utilization of the high-pass filtered ground motion leads to underestimating the demands of pier top, pier bottom and deck displacements. However, the demands of isolation displacement, isolation permanent displacement and pier drift are almost identical for both the unfiltered and filtered versions of the ground motion record. On the other hand, for the seismically isolated bridge traversed by a fault rupture zone (“Case B”), all response quantities are significantly underestimated when the high-pass filtered ground motion is used. These results, though limited to a single bridge structure and a single ground motion input, clearly indicate the importance of permanent ground displacement on the dynamic response of spatially extended engineering structures crossing fault rupture zones. Permanent ground displacement (PGD) caused by surface faulting is considered as one of the most significant hazards affecting buried pipelines. Pipelines crossing reverse-slip faults are subjected to compressive actions (stresses and strains) which can result in buckling of the pipe. In current work, the results obtained from the full-scale laboratory testing and finite element analyses of 4″ (114.3 mm) and 6″ (168.3 mm) steel gas pipes (without internal pressure) buried inside a split box and subjected to a reverse faulting of 0.6 m (pure dip-slip) are presented. These pipes are commonly used in gas distribution lines and networks. The experimental setup, procedure and instrumentation as well as the finite element (FE) modeling of the problem are described in detail. It is observed that the soil failure in the moving part of the split-box occurs along vertical surfaces extending from the sides of the pipe to the ground surface. The experimental results indicate that both pipes exhibit an S-shape deformation with two local buckling sections where the excessive yielding and plastic deformations of the pipes could lead to rupture failure. Both pipes exhibited “diamond-shape” buckled sections. The buckled sections of the pipes in the fixed and moving parts of the split box were unsymmetrical with respect to the fault plane. Using the factor of ovality to measure the pipe cross-section distortion, it is found that the cross-section distortion is more severe for the buckled section of the pipe in the moving part of the split box in comparison to its fixed part. Also, the distance between the buckled sections increases by increasing the pipe diameter, while the distortion of the pipe cross-section increases by increasing the pipe diameter over thickness ratio. Using the FE models that were validated utilizing the experimental results, the maximum equivalent soil–pipe interaction forces and their distribution along the pipes were determined and the results were compared with that of American Lifeline Alliance Guidelines for the Design of Buried Steel Pipe (ALA, 2005) [33] . The obtained maximum bearing force is less than the suggested values by ALA, while the maximum uplift force slightly exceeds those of ALA. The results indicate that for the considered cases, the uplift force is sensitive to the pipe diameter and its relative stiffness, while the ALA (2005, [33] ) suggests a constant force for the burial depths considered in this study. Bridge structures across active faults suffer the serious threats from large surface deformation and velocity pulses. This study focuses on developing a multi-criteria optimizing method and investigating the damping effect of the optimized damper system on a cable-stayed bridge across a strike-slip fault. A simplified baseline corrected method is adopted to recover the static offsets in near-fault records and the improved record-decomposition incorporation method is modified to produce artificial across-fault ground motions. A single pylon cable-stayed bridge across a strike-slip fault is taken as the case bridge and the refined nonlinear numerical model is established in OpenSees. The conventional multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) theory is improved by introducing new function forms and a control parameter to assess the best fault-crossing angles of the case bridge. The improved MCDM method is integrated with the beetle antennae search algorithm to optimize the damper system of the case bridge. Finally, the influence of fault-crossing angles and earthquake parameters (permanent displacements and ratios of maximum to permanent displacement) on the damping effect of the optimized damper system are investigated. The results indicate that the cable-stayed bridge reaches optimal seismic performance when the fault-crossing angle is around 90° (75°-105°) as both the biaxial nonlinearity of the pylon and the risk of the girder unseating are reduced. The damper system is efficiently optimized by the proposed method, and the displacement and force demand of the case bridge are balanced. Both the fault-crossing angles and earthquake parameters are observed to have considerable influence on the damping effects. More specifically, the damping effect on most seismic responses is optimized when the fault-crossing angle approaches 90° (60°-120°). As the permanent displacement increases, the damping effect on the pier-girder relative displacement is significantly reduced and the damping effect on the pier moments is moderately decreased. Moreover, the damping effect is improved for all the seismic responses as the ratios of maximum to permanent displacements increase, with the exception of transverse displacement. In this study, a novel and simple method is proposed to evaluate inelastic pipes' behavior under ground movements considering soil-pipe interaction based on the finite difference method. The existing finite difference-based method previously proposed by the authors for strain analysis of buried pipelines subjected to ground movements excludes material nonlinearity in pipes, which limits its applicability in engineering practice. To remedy this situation, the method presented herein maintains the well-established concepts of the existing finite-difference-based method but also introduces the scheme to consider the inelastic material behavior of steel pipes. More specifically, the expressions of internal axial force and bending moment, required in the finite difference equations, are explicitly derived based on the actual stress distribution on the pipe cross-section. The proposed method is validated against the finite element method (one-dimensional beam model) in terms of the strain and deformation demands using two indicative case studies, referred to as symmetric and non-symmetric soil resistance conditions, respectively. The comparison between finite element analysis and the proposed method indicates good agreement. Additionally, the proposed method is compared with four existing analytical methods for pipes subjected to strike-slip fault displacement. The proposed method is a simple but general technique to analyze pipes' response under a wide range of geohazards, and thus can be potentially used as an alternative method for preliminary design, safety prescreening, and reliability-based assessment of pipes against geohazards. A numerical study is carried out on buried steel and high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipelines subjected to oblique-reverse faulting. The components of the oblique-reverse offset along the horizontal and normal directions in the fault plane are determined using well-known empirical equations. The numerical model is validated using the experimental results and detailed finite element model of a 114.3 mm (4″) steel gas pipe subjected to a reverse fault offset up to 0.6 m along the faulting direction. Different parameters such as the pipe material, the burial depth to the pipe diameter ratio ( H/ D), the pipe diameter to wall thickness ratio ( D/t), and the fault-pipe crossing angle are considered and their effects on the response parameters are discussed. The maximum and minimum compressive strains are observed at crossing angles of 30° and 90°, respectively. It is found that the dimensionless parameters alone are not sufficient for comparison purposes. Comparing steel and HDPE pipes, it is observed that HDPE pipes show larger compressive strains due to their lower strength and stiffness. For both steel and HDPE pipes, peak strains increase with increasing D/t and H/ D ratio for a constant pipe diameter and fault offset. For a given H/ D ratio, compressive strains increase with increasing D/ t ratio in HDPE pipes, while in steel pipes considered in this study, this effect is negligible. Abstract: On 6 April 2009, 01:32 GMT, an M w 6.3 earthquake hit the Abruzzi region of central Italy causing widespread damage in the City of L’Aquila and its nearby villages. The mainshock of this earthquake was recorded by 57 digital strong-motion instruments, four of which are located on the hanging wall of the Paganica Fault near L’Aquila. These stations are no more than 6km from the epicentre. We use accelerometric data from these four stations to estimate permanent ground displacements caused by the mainshock. Our numerical results reveal south-east and downwards directed permanent co-seismic displacements which are in fair agreement with the outcomes of GPS and InSAR measurements reported in preliminary Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) reports. • Nonlinear seismic responses of fault-crossing bridges were investigated. • Ground motions with permanent ground displacement were corrected and synthesized. • Multi-criteria decision making process was used to optimize the fault-crossing angle. • Parametric studies on seismic behavior of fault-crossing bridges were conducted. Past earthquakes have demonstrated that fault-crossing bridges were susceptible to damage or even collapse. This study focused on investigating the effects of fault rupture on seismic responses of a simply-supported highway bridge. Six sets of ground motions with fling-step effect in fault-parallel direction and forward directivity effect in fault-normal direction were selected as the inputs from four strike-slip earthquakes. A simplified baseline correction method was used to recover the permanent ground displacement in these records. A typical simply-supported girder bridge located in China was taken as the prototype bridge and the numerical model of the bridge was generated in OpenSees. Effects of fault crossing angles (from 15° to 165°) and the amplitude of permanent ground displacement on the seismic behaviors of the bridge were evaluated. More specially, two special cases, i.e. contact case and separation case, are considered and compared considering the contact and separation between the girder and abutment in bridge longitudinal direction. Results revealed that the piers and bearings in contact case have larger seismic damage compared to separation case, and the separation case causes the unseating of the bridge spans. It was found that the fault crossing angle has a great impact on the seismic responses of the fault-crossing bridge.
