In a pandemic or post-pandemic world, numerous environments can be stress-inducing for individuals. Hospitals, for instance, can trigger anxiety in patients who feel a sense of helplessness over their health conditions. Similarly, home offices, where people spend extended hours meeting deadlines in isolation, can also contribute to mounting mental pressure. The situation may further deteriorate in the foreseeable future, given the widely accepted work-from-home norm that leads to a rise in social isolation. Could social robotics play a positive role in transforming these stressful places into cheerful and restorative places? In this paper, we investigated how people's perceived restorativeness (i.e., how restorative an environment is perceived by its inhabitants) can be shaped by socially interactive robotic flowers embedded in the interior spaces as interior decorations. As a means of simulating the interior environment, we utilized virtual reality (VR) to incorporate socially expressive virtual flowers, enabling people to interact with them. Through in-lab studies, we invited 35 participants to experience this virtual space, both with and without the socially interactive flowers. Our findings revealed that the presence of these interactive flowers significantly enhanced participants' perception of restorativeness within the interior environment. While previous research in Social Robotics and HRI has primarily focused on people's perception of social robots, there has been limited exploration into how social robots, when integrated into an architectural space, can influence inhabitants' perceptions of that particular environment. We believe this can be a novel and promising research direction for the social robotics and HRI communities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT: Although urban space is a living and continuous space, it is also seen as a tool that reflects all developments in the city. The analysis of space is possible by evaluating the physical, social, historical, cultural, economic, political and administrative factors that vary from past to present. All of the factors are shaped by individüaliste, non-governmental organizations, sectoral components and local government powers, which are the main actors of the space. The identity perception of the place can be analyzed with the integrity extending from the past to the future, and it is possible to read the city correctly and at the same time to be able to read it at the same time by shaping the space in accordance with cultural values, the participation of the people in the administration, city planning principles and planning studies, urbanity awareness, and the fact of belonging to play a major role. The management powers of the space come to the fore in terms of protecting the material-spiritual cultural heritage and supporting the urban texture with participatory approaches. Within the scope of the study, the perception of space-identity of the urban is analyzed by aiming to read the space. The prominent areas in the space, the periods of political-cultural breakdown, the displacement of the focal points in the space with planning studies and the urban perception of the biggest actors of the space were examined. In the study conducted by considering the example of the Pazar district of Rize province, the space that has changed physically from past to present is discussed, and the perception of the space actors in the abstract sense is supported by the survey study. Over the years, physical changes have taken place in the management processes, the first of which was in the 1970s, but with the planning works that have continued until today, it has caused the focal points to change. In line with the decisions taken with the planning studies, it was seen that the city, which was concentrated around the trade center, developed in an east-west direction along the coastal axis. In the survey, starting from the 1980s, when the planning period was active; The perception of space-identity was measured with the people who witnessed the period and the elements that make up the identity of the city were determined.

The purpose of this study is to provide a discussion ground that can answer the question, “as a contemporary theme in transformation of space perception, what is the meaning of architecture in the art of the 2000s”. As the scope, works of leading figures of 2000s art were examined through literature review and it was aimed to obtain an original concept set by evaluating them in the context of art-space relationship. The methodology is divided into three sections. The first section is literature research which is based on the determination of the theory about the artworks. The second section is based on the demonstrations of the relationships between the spatial themes through “knowledge discovery in databases”. In the third section, the groups are emphasized through “relative frequencies of the spatial themes”. Accordingly, when the artworks are evaluated in terms of spatial features, it is seen that narratives are related with war, peace, anarchy, individuality, imprisonment, separation, loneliness, uncanny, anxiety, curiosity, desire, lethargy, memory, boredom, consumer culture, ambiguity, habit, conflict and revel. As a result, the image of space occurs while being positioned together with interior and exterior, official and informal, ordinary and extraordinary, dramatic and analytical where dualities formed by contrasts are dissolved.

While we humans exist in space through our bodies, we experience it via all our senses and build up an integrated knowledge of the world in our memories. However, children’s conception of the world differs from adults due to their developmental stages. This study aims to examine human-space interaction with a new approach to reveal the effects of sensory stimuli on children's perception and memory of space. The case study was conducted in a theme park that offers various sensory stimuli with particularly designed spaces and activities. For the behavioral data, the spatial preferences of the participants (33 children, age 10) were recorded during the tour, and for the memory data participants were asked to draw pictures (cognitive maps) afterwards. The data sets were redefined by the main sensory stimuli offered by the spatial units (spatial data), and the number of stimulus experiences and the number of stimulus recalls were analyzed comparatively. Contrary to popular belief, the results show that (1) all of the senses take part in perception depending on the existing stimuli in the space, vision does not have any precedence; (2) the functioning of the senses during an experience changes depending on how much stimulus they are exposed to and how much the body participates in the perception process; (3) kinesthetic stimuli come to the fore as the best stored stimuli in memory, whereas the taste stimuli remain in the background as the least remembered ones. The case study group was limited, the subjective aspects of perception, and the age and gender differences that may exist are ignored. With the inclusion of age and gender factors precisely, this methodology could reveal promising alternatives for design methods and guide the production of all types of architectural spaces, including the children's spaces. This study proposes an original perspective that regards both the physical and social components of the space as the source of perception; and it attempts to make up for a deficiency by regarding the children who are mostly neglected in other studies, yet are active users of the space.

SPATIAL memory , *MEMORY , *SPACE perception - Abstract
In the current study, we investigated whether the introduction of perspective shifts in a spatial memory task results in systematic biases in object location estimations. To do so, we asked participants to first encode the position of an object in a virtual room and then to report its position from memory or perception following a perspective shift. Overall, our results showed that participants made systematic errors in estimating object positions in the same direction as the perspective shift. Notably, this bias was present in both memory and perception conditions. We propose that the observed systematic bias was driven by difficulties in understanding the perspective shifts that led participants to use an egocentric representation of object positions as an anchor when estimating the object location following a perspective shift. As a research topic of several disciplines such as psychology, sociology, and especially architecture, wayfinding is always on the agenda and is open to research. In this paper, the relationships between the wayfinding decisions of the users in hospitals and the layout of the hospitals were examined on inexperienced users. Hospitals, which are places where people frequently visit and compete over time to gain their health during their visits, are public spaces with the highest circulation of users during the day. For this reason, hospitals were preferred as research areas. Factors affecting the spatial perception of the users during wayfinding were tested in the real space scene. The relationship between wayfinding decisions of users and the layout of the hospital was analyzed by VGA over GoPro camera according to the selected routes. The wayfinding behavior analysis of the users was conducted with the GoPro camera. In addition, the VGA of the plans consisting of routes was performed with Depthmap software. Finally, the numerical data obtained from both analyzes were interpreted using the SPSS 24 statistical package and appropriate digital analysis. As a result of the analysis, it was revealed that the layout of a hospital is effective in the wayfinding decisions of the users due to several spatial variables, and the layout and the wayfinding behavior are closely related.

In its current digital, pictorial and viral ubiquity, architecture no longer has to be bodily present, but has a mediating role. As a medial hinge it folds different disciplines of media and art onto the realm of the everyday. Here, the idea of architectonics can be understood as the architectural implications of computer games in a broader sense to address the matter of architecture in game worlds as well as the architecture of computer games themselves. This anthology bundles transdisciplinary approaches around the topics of space, architecture, perception of and worldbuilding in computer games and their media-specific properties. The aim is to show how and under which aspects digital game worlds are constituted.

In this study, the potential of social space formation in the step streets and the affecting factors were discussed. Within the scope of the study, step streets, social space, public space, belonging to the city have been researched and aimed to establish conceptual links by associating them with the city. Just as there are popular step streets over the world, there are also step streets which attract attention in the historical regions of Istanbul. With the qualitative research method, the use of the public space of the staircase streets was examined through the parameters of accessibility, comfort, efficiency and aesthetics, and in this context, the success of use as a social space, the potentials of the stairs were determined by on-site observation and measurement methods. Within the scope of the study, Balat Merdivenli Mektep Street, Beyoğlu Hacı Ali Street and Üsküdar Yeni Dünya Street are evaluated in detail in terms of physical and social spatial features. Within the framework of the findings obtained, the contributions of the stairs to the environment and lifestyle were examined. The existence of the step streets as a social space and their participation in the city life were researched through the visibility of the social media, the photo and video sharing application "Instagram", and the visibility of the streets with the social media were evaluated through the users' shares. The research results show that the streets and the physical properties of the streets with stairs contribute to the potential of social space. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

VISUAL perception , *CULTURAL property , *HUMAN beings , *INDUSTRIAL buildings , *FACADES - Abstract
Spaces that provide their main functions during the period they were built cannot meet the needs over time and become out of use. With the change and progress of the conditions of the period, industrial structures that have lost their original function and become idle must be refunctionalized and regained back to the city. Industrial structures should be preserved as our cultural heritage, ensured sustainability and transferred to future generations. It is an intense process that industrial structures are re-functionalized and regained to the city with their new identities. The response it finds in its users is very important in order for the new function of the transformed building to be included in life and to be adopted. The transformation should be realized by evaluating the perception of the space to be re-functional on the human with all its dimensions. In this way, buildings will be able to find a response in people and life with their new functions while preserving their original identity. In this study, the perception of space on human beings was quantificationed and evaluated for buildings with different functions, re-functionalized from industrial buildings. According to the given function, the findings regarding the physical and emotional perception of the participant on the basis of the old and new functions, interior and facade, and evaluations were made. This article is an aesthetic-comprehensive production, result of the research entitled "Spatialities and educational processes", in which 19 school buildings in two Colombian cities were explored. It dealt with fundamental concepts of architecture and contemporary philosophy. Ethnographic and historiographic aspects were articulated and arts-based research was deployed, since the epistemological issues we were looking for demanded an immersion in space itself. Highlights: • The estimation of verticality (assessed with Subjective visual vertical (SVV)) is more variable in patients with Usher (type I and II) compared to healthy participants. • Visual and vestibular information are essential for the visual vertical (VV) perception. • A reweighting of sensory information from the central nervous system seems to be able to compensate for the absence of vestibular function in patients with Usher type I. BACKGROUND: Verticality, or more precisely the ability to perceive spatial orientation with regard to gravity, is based on the integration of visual, vestibular and somesthetic information. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the present study was to compare the subjective visual vertical (SVV) in patients with Usher (type I and type II) with visual or vestibular impairment, and in healthy participants, in order to explore the importance of the visual and vestibular functions on the vertical's perception. METHODS: We evaluated the SVV using a wall housing which projects on the opposite wall a red-light line of about 2 meters, obtained by laser cannon. The evaluation was carried out under two tilt conditions: clockwise and counter-clockwise randomly performed five times in each direction. The response to the SVV task was quantified by the mean of the absolute values of the SVV. RESULTS: Responses to the SVV were significantly less accurate in patients with Usher with respect to healthy participants while it was similar for the two groups of patients with Usher. CONCLUSIONS: We hypothesize that visual inputs play a very important role in the perception of verticality and that the symmetrical bilateral vestibular deficit in Usher type I does not have a strong impact in perception of verticality. 36. How Has The Pandemic Situation Changed Our Perception Of Space

- Abstract
The vast majority of people in countries affected by COVID-19 felt the radical change the pandemic brought about in almost all aspects of life. Social interactions were cut to a minimum and all cultural activities were banned. In this paper, I evaluate the following question: how did the pandemic situation change our perception of space? I assess what this situation offered us, and how the restrictions imposed due to COVID-19 changed our perception of urban and public space. In order to dig deeper into these questions, I use the ideas of three philosophers who work with a conception of space emphasizing its perception.Through the chosen theories, I introduce public space as something beyond a simple materialistic interpretation. On the one hand, I use Henri Lefebvre’s spatial triad to establish different layers of space. On the other, I argue that the material layer of public space could provide us with valuable experience, according to the phenomenological approach advocated by Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Michel de Certeau. Much of the argument in this paper is based on my own observations during the eight-month lockdown period in the Czech Republic during the spring of 2021., Každodenní život obyvatel, spojený s vnímáním veřejných prostorových vztahů, byl silně ovlivněn pandemií covid-19.

- Abstract
In recent decades, gender inequality has been discussed increasingly in different fields of society. Since long ago, aspects like power dynamics in traditional households, or studies on the human anatomy, have influenced men and women’s place in society. This gender inequality has also impacted how cities have been designed by and for men, although the existing hypothesis is that the needs of men and women in a city differ. Evidence already shows that women feel more unsafe in cities then men, which can be caused by design of urban environments not being fit for women. This leaves the questions what this relation between gender and the built environment actually entails, whether cities are currently gender inclusive, and if not, how urban design can contribute to make them to do so. This research has found that men and women have different user patterns and perceptions when it comes to their presence in urban environments. This impacts the way they use and perceive the city. In this study, these differences have been translated into design principles that can positively impact women’s use and perception of the urban environment. These design principles were used to analyse the current state of gender inclusivity in urban environments, through the locations of Hillesluis and Zuidwijk, a pre- and post-war neighbourhood in Rotterdam Zuid with a high cultural diversity and a low socio-economic status. The analysis generated a set of spatial elements that either negatively or positively influence a woman’s perception of space. After testing these spatial elements through a survey, the findings were combined with the design principles, to design a proposal on how the current urban environments could be improved to be more gender inclusive. Guided by these end products, a universal framework was created, that can test all urban environments in their gender-inclusivity., Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences | Urbanism

Evoking the Istanbul space under the eyes of a French journalist, Valérie Manteau’s Le Sillon offers a walk within Istanbul. It is in search of the sensitive dimension of this space that we rely in this research on the key concepts of “literary geography” defined by Michel Collot. In order to retrace the Istanbulite “landscape”. This one, anchored in oppressions and forgetful-ness imposed on space, repels walkers at the same time as it attracts them: they leave the space while having left a part of themselves there. Thus, the landscape Istanbulite is engraved on Le sillon which is structured page by page in the way the city appears., Evoquant l’espace stambouliote sous regard d’une journaliste française, Le Sillon de Valérie Manteau propose une balade au sein d’Istanbul.

Currently in the teaching of landscape architecture, there is growing interest in perceptual and experiential issues. The European Landscape Convention – the established reference among actors in the field of the landscape - integrates the issue of perception in the very definition of the landscape. Teachers dealing with spatial design are thus led to develop various methodologies to tackle questions such as, how is space experienced ? How can students be made more aware of their own spatial experiences ? How can words (for naming and narrating) or graphic representations be used in this learning process ? What teaching methods (experimental protocols) should be proposed to students ? How can the work of students be analysed to further develop these methods and the theoretical framework on which they are based ? This article will explore these issues through the analysis of a teaching experiment conducted for several years in the context of a master course in landscape architecture by Ann Bergsjö (Swedish University of Agronomy in Alnarp) and inspired by the research of Catherine Szanto (Paris-La Villette School of Architecture).

This thesis discusses how photography, as a visual method of spatial research, can investigate how (public) spaces are used. Whose space is it? Is it actively designed or passively used, which actions are performed? These are questions that will be answered through a methodical photographic approach. „The Art of Action“ by Michel de Certeau and „The Production ofSpace” by Henri Lefebvre provide with their works the theoretical framework of the understanding of space for the investigation of everyday life. The described strategies, practices and tactics in the dimensions of space are made visible. The Ernst Thälmann Areal in East Berlin‘s Prenzlauer Berg district is the site of the investigation. At the time of industrialization once the gasworks at the edge of the city, when the GDR was about to end the last utopia ofGDR housing was realized here. Neglected for a long time, the area has moved into the center of the city and is attracting the attention of residents, investors, and city politicians. The thesis explores the question to what extent photography can be applied as a visual method of spatial research to analyze the actions of space users during the transformation processes in the Ernst Thälmann housing estate? The aim of the work is: 1. to discuss different visual methods of spatial research that use photography and 2. to investigate and visually represent the current transformation of the Ernst Thälmann area by means of a chosen method. The result is a photobook, consisting of photographs, interview content and the reference to the chosen spatial theory, which serves the categories of the survey, illustrating the ways in which space is produced and thus answering the research question visually and textually.

WOMEN , *SPIRITUALITY , *BUDDHISM - Abstract
The Western world is experiencing increasing popularity of new religious movements whose adherents tend to spirituality, a subjective, personal form of religion. These spiritual forms shape the spaces of everyday life, their meanings, perceptions, and experiences, which is starting to be reflected in new geographies of religion. In Czechia, one of the most rapidly growing new religious movements is Diamond Way Buddhism. This contribution focuses on how Diamond Way spirituality is lived and experienced in space. The paper explores this phenomenon using the method of auto-photography. We asked six women to photograph places important to them in their daily lives and interpret their spiritual meaning. This method allows exploration of women’s spirituality in the everyday spaces where it is perceived and experienced, such as kitchens, buses, or natural sites. The results show that women have a specific way of experiencing Buddhism in seemingly secular space which they describe through feminine characteristics of transcendence. Everyday spaces become spiritual through the subjects’ emotional and continual experiencing of Buddhism, while the officially sacred space of a Buddhist center is incorporated into everyday life activities of women. The division between sacred and secular spaces often described by scholars is therefore challenged. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper is devoted to the process of shaping of urban pedestrian public spaces in new revitalised urban structures of European cities in the early 21st century upon the example of a new revitalised centre of Bjørvika Barcode in Oslo. New public spaces emerge, creating a new spatial context. The paper also focuses on some aspects of the creation of space, particularly from the perspective of pedestrian users of the ‘ground floor’ of these spaces and the perception thereof connected with – without limitations – composition and aesthetics of architecture, and its relation towards the surrounding area and nature. Creation of urban spaces has a significant effect on the process of shaping of the surrounding synergic architecture and synergic urban pedestrian public spaces, as well as creates a new spatial identity of the place and its architecture.

- Abstract
This study proposes an original perspective that regards both the physical and social components of the space as the source of perception; and it attempts to
