In this study, the efficacy of antioxidants found in pequi leaves was examined for safeguarding pequi biodiesel (EBP) against oxidation. The results reveal notable achievements. The antioxidant activity of AFP (a pequi leaf antioxidant additive) was assessed at various concentrations, demonstrating that as the concentration of AFP increases, the inhibition percentage significantly rises, reaching a remarkable inhibition of 99.12% at 100 mg L−1, with a calculated IC50 of 25.4 mg L−1. Additionally, the analysis of the AFP composition revealed the presence of terpenes and oxygenated compounds, which are well known for their antioxidant properties. Furthermore, the research emphasized the significance of thermogravimetric analysis in evaluating the thermal stability of additives, identifying critical temperatures at which AFP begins to protect biodiesel against oxidation (247.18°C) and the point at which its effectiveness may diminish (469.19°C). The EBP met quality standards regarding acidity, water content and density, but exhibited slightly lower oxidative stability compared with established standards. The correlation between the thermal degradation of biodiesel and the induction period highlighted the efficacy of AFP in mitigating thermal degradation. The reuse of biomass residue can be in different ways, such as pellets obtained through the compaction of green coconut shell. Despite the advantages, studies relate the burning of biomass as the main source of household air pollution. Indoor pollution is also correlated with serious consequences for groups considered at risk, such as asthmatics. As a result, the population is looking for alternative and low-cost treatments through natural products with anti-inflammatory characteristics, such as the fixed oil of Caryocar coriaceum (CC). In the present study, we evaluated the effects of oral CC ingestion on the respiratory system of mice submitted to a model of chronic exposure to smoke from the combustion of coconut shell pellets (CSP) and submitted to the OVA-induced asthma model. We performed analysis of the gaseous composition in the exposure chamber and analyzes of different aspects of the respiratory system. CC could prevent inflammatory cell infiltration and alveolar collapse. Furthermore, it was able to avoid changes in the airway resistance, tissue resistance, elastance, compliance and inspiratory capacity. Our findings demonstrate the effects of long-term exposure to indoor pollution and suggest that dietary intake of CC may be a strategy to prevent respiratory diseases.

Simple Summary: Pequi (Caryocar brasiliense Camb.) is an evergreen tree typical of the biodiversity in the Brazilian cerrado biome and it represents an important source of income for communities that sell its fruit and related products, such as PO (pequi oil). Pequi oil has antioxidant properties as a result of its high concentration of carotenoids, and said properties have been investigated in in vitro studies and animal models. However, up until now, the effects of dietary supplementation with PO have not been investigated in broiler chickens, which raised our research interest. We found that the levels of pequi oil used in broiler chickens submitted to high temperatures had a hepatoprotective effect; in addition, higher levels reduced the concentration of malondialdehyde in their livers. Corroborating these results, birds fed with higher levels of pequi oil showed a 92% reduction in the concentration of their Hsp 70 mRNA in comparison to birds with supplementation, whereas the Nrf2 gene was upregulated (37%). Therefore, supplementation with PO relieves alterations in the antioxidant system caused by heat stress in broiler chickens, acting as a potential antioxidant additive for use in poultry production. Furthermore, our findings can inform future studies. The present study was conducted to determine the possible antioxidant protection of pequi oil (PO) against cyclic heat stress in broiler chickens and to highlight the application of PO as a promising additive in broiler feed. A total of 400 one-day-old male broiler chicks (Cobb 500) were randomly assigned to 2 × 5 factorially arranged treatments: two temperature-controlled rooms (thermoneutral—TN or heat stress—HS for 8 h/day) and five dietary PO levels (0, 1.5, 3.0, 4.5, or 6.0 g/kg diet) for 42 days. Each treatment consisted of eight replicates of five birds. The results showed that HS increased glucose (p = 0.006), triglycerides (p < 0.001), and HDL (p = 0.042) at 21 days and reduced (p = 0.005) serum total cholesterol at 42 days. The results also showed that HS increased the contents of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST). In contrast, PO linearly decreased AST (p = 0.048) and ALT (p = 0.020) at 21 and 42 days, respectively. The heterophil-to-lymphocyte ratio in the birds under HS was higher than in those in the TN environment (p = 0.046). Heat stress decreased (p = 0.032) the relative weight of their livers at 21 days. The superoxide dismutase activity increased (p = 0.010) in the HS treatments in comparison to the TN treatments, while the glutathione peroxidase activity in the liver decreased (p < 0.001) at 42 days; however, the activity of catalase had no significant effects. Meanwhile, increasing the dietary PO levels linearly decreased plasma malondialdehyde (p < 0.001) in the birds in the HS environment. In addition, PO reduced (p = 0.027) the expression of Hsp 70 in the liver by 92% when compared to the TN treatment without PO, mainly at the 6.0 g/kg diet level. The expression of Nrf2 was upregulated by 37% (p = 0.049) in response to PO with the 6.0 g/kg diet compared to the HS treatment without PO. In conclusion, PO supplementation alleviated the adverse effects of HS on broilers due to its antioxidant action and modulation of the genes related to oxidative stress, providing insights into its application as a potential feed additive in broiler production. ABSTRACT The indiscriminate use of antibiotics has contributed to the emergence of multiresistant bacteria. Faced with this, the search for antibiotics from plants has proven to be a promising alternative. The objective of this work was to isolate and identify Staphylococcus sp. resistant to methicillin of the ocular surface of dogs with ophthalmopathies and to evaluate its susceptibility to alcoholic extract of the bark and hexane extract of the pulp of Caryocar brasiliense. Biological material was collected from the ocular surface of 21 dogs presenting ophthalmopathies. We isolated 64 S. pseudintermedius, among these, 4 isolates were identified as methicillin-resistant S. pseudintermedius (MRSP). The alcoholic extract of C. brasiliense peel was able to inhibit the bacterial growth of MRSP isolates at a concentration of 2.2%. Thus, the extract from the C. brasiliense peel has antimicrobial potential and represents an alternative in the control of MRSP.

Caryocar brasiliense Cambess is a plant species typical of the Cerrado, a Brazilian biome. The fruit of this species is popularly known as pequi, and its oil is used in traditional medicine. However, an important factor hindering the use of pequi oil is its low yield when extracted from the pulp of this fruit. Therefore, in this study, with aim of developing a new herbal medicine, we an-alyzed the toxicity and anti-inflammatory activity of an extract of pequi pulp residue (EPPR), fol-lowing the mechanical extraction of the oil from its pulp. For this purpose, EPPR was prepared and encapsulated in chitosan. The nanoparticles were analyzed, and the cytotoxicity of the encapsu-lated EPPR was evaluated in vitro. After confirming the cytotoxicity of the encapsulated EPPR, the following evaluations were performed with non-encapsulated EPPR: in vitro anti-inflammatory activity, quantification of cytokines, and acute toxicity in vivo. Once the anti-inflammatory activity and absence of toxicity of EPPR were verified, a gel formulation of EPPR was developed for topical use and analyzed for its in vivo anti-inflammatory potential, ocular toxicity, and previous stability assessment. EPPR and the gel containing EPPR showed effective anti-inflammatory activity and lack of toxicity. The formulation was stable. Caryocar brasiliense Cambess (pequi) is the fruit of the pequizeiro tree found in the Brazilian Cerrado (savanna). Supercritical fluids have been used to effectively extract bioactive chemicals. In light of the paucity of research on the supercritical extraction of pequi, in this study, experimental tests were conducted on the extraction of pequi almond oil using supercritical CO2; the optimal extraction conditions were determined, and the fatty acids and active compounds in the oil were characterized. The experiments were conducted using the Box–Behnken experimental design of a three-variable system: pressure (15, 20, and 25 MPa), temperature (303.15, 318.15, and 333.15 K), and flow rate (2, 3, and 5 g.min−1). The optimal extraction conditions were 318.15 K, 25 MPa, and 5.0 g.min−1, which yielded 27.6 wt% of oil. The experimental kinetic curves were described using a second-order quadratic model (based on the Sovová model), which demonstrated a satisfactory correspondence with the kinetic curves. Significant amounts of squalene, stigmasterol, oleic fatty acids, and palmitic fatty acids were detected in pequi almond oil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Considered the symbol fruit of the Brazilian Cerrado, pequi (Caryocar brasiliense Camb.) is an exotic and much-appreciated fruit with an internal mesocarp (edible part) with an eye-catching golden yellow color. In an unprecedented way, this study characterized the proteome throughout pequi development. The most influential and essential transcription factors operating in the regulation of pequi ripening identified were members of the MAD-box family. A group of proteins related to the methionine cycle indicates the high consumption and recycling of methionine. However this consumption does not occur mainly for the biosynthesis of ethylene, a process dependent on methionine consumption. In the bioactive compounds presented, different proteins could be correlated with the presence of these phytochemicals, such as monodehydroascorbate reductase and ascorbate peroxidase in ascorbic acid recycling; pyruvate kinase, fructose bisphosphate aldolase and phytoene synthase with carotenoid biosynthesis; S-adenosylmethionine synthase 1 as a donor of methyl groups in the formation of trigonelline and aspartate aminotransferase as a biomarker of initial regulation of the trigonelline biosynthetic pathway; phenylalanine ammonia lyase, chorismate synthesis and chalcone-flavononone isomerase in the biosynthesis of phenolic compounds. Among the volatile organic compounds identified, the majority compound in pequi was ethyl hexanoate ester, with an area of 50.68 % in the ripe fruit, and in this group of esters that was the most representative, alcohol dehydrogenase, a fundamental enzyme in the synthesis of esters, was identified with an increase of approximately 7.2 times between the first and last stages. Therefore, an extensive group of proteins and some metabolites can serve as biomarkers of ripening in pequi, as most were more expressed in the last stage, which is the ripe fruit suitable for consumption. O mesocarpo de pequi é um coproduto que pode ser reutilizado através da extração de substâncias como as pectinas. As pectinas podem ser usadas como matéria-prima para a produção de filmes biodegradáveis. O objetivo deste trabalho foi a extração do mesocarpo de pequi e a caracterização dessas substâncias, através do espectro infravermelho e produzir filmes. A extração da pectina foi realizada por esquema fatorial 2³, com variação nas condições de concentração do ácido cítrico (0,5; 0,75 e 0,8 M) e no tempo (25; 50 e 75 min). O grau de esterificação das pectinas extraídas foi analisado usando a transformada de Fourier (FTIR) com um espectrômetro de infravermelho. O tratamento com maior grau de esterificação foi utilizado para a produção de filmes pelo método de casting. Os filmes foram avaliados quanto as propriedades mecânicas. O rendimento da extração aumentou com o aumento do tempo de extração. As pectinas extraídas apresentaram alto e baixo grau de esterificação na qual foi possivel visualizar pelas bandas do espectro infravermelho. As características mecânicas dos filmes de pectina foram melhores quando usadas apenas em pectina comercial.

Leaves of Caryocar brasiliense, the gold of the Cerrado, are used in folk medicine to treat diseases of the respiratory tract. The content of total phenols and flavonoids of ethanolic extracts from the leaves of C. brasiliense were analysed by the Folin-Dennis reagent and aluminium chloride, respectively, in addition to the antioxidant activity by DPPH and ABTS tests. The coupling of ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) and mass spectrometry allowed the identification of 25 compounds, including tannins, triterpenes, saponins, lipids, and flavonoids. The structures were established by retention time behaviour, extensive analyses of their MS spectra, and by comparison with standards and/or of their MS data with those reported in the literature. Twenty-one compounds are being registered for the first time in C. brasiliense. The results suggest the potential of this species as a source of bioactive substances with antioxidant properties. Background: The use of pequi by-product as animal feed is an appealing alternative to reduce overall production costs. However, little is known regarding its effects on animal performance as well as the ideal inclusion level in the diet. Objective: To evaluate performance, intake, and digestibility of confined lambs receiving diets containing different levels of pequi byproduct as a partial substitute for corn silage. Methods: The experiment was conducted in Curvelo, Brazil, using twenty-five crossbred Santa Inês male lambs (17.83 ± 1.73 kg) aged six months for 92 days. Increasing levels of pequi by-product (0, 6, 12, 18, and 24%) replacing corn silage were evaluated in a completely randomized design. Analysis of variance and regression were performed, with 5% significance level. Results: Inclusion of pequi by-product did not influence (p>0.05) average daily gain, total weight gain, or feed conversion ratio. No effect (p>0.05) was also observed on intake of dry matter, organic matter, ether extract, crude protein, neutral detergent fiber, total carbohydrates, and total digestible nutrients. Summary: Root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.) are responsible for various significant crop losses, which require taking integrated control measures. The present study aimed to identify a possible sustainable approach to the management of Meloidogyne javanica in vegetable crops using an organic compound based on pequi (Caryocar brasiliense) fruit residues. A pot experiment was conducted using cultivars of tomato and lettuce susceptible to M. javanica , with three amendments including inorganic fertiliser, cattle manure and five doses of organic compost with pequi residues. All treatments were inoculated with second-stage juveniles of M. javanica to simulate the root-knot nematode disease in field conditions. Increasing doses of organic compost with pequi residues from 5 kg m−3 to 30 kg m−3 promoted a significant decrease in the nematode population in both cultures evaluated. Organic compost (30 kg m−3) reduced the numbers of galls and eggs of M. javanica by 41.6 and 46.5% in tomato roots, and by 80.3 and 59.2% in lettuce roots, respectively, compared with non-treated control. Organic compost also increased crop development considerably. In general, there was a 43.0% increase in plant development compared to non-treated control. Hence, organic compost of pequi residues could be an alternative to toxic chemical nematicides and recommended as eco-friendly management of M. javanica in vegetable crops. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The immersion of seeds in gibberellic acid solutions can promote dormancy breaking. Storage can be dynamic in seed longevity. The objective of this work was to evaluate different concentrations of gibberellic acid applied to seeds isolated from two storage times on the emergence of C. brasiliense tree seedlings grown in tubes. There were two experiments with different planting and storage times. The seeds were extracted from the endocarp. In both, a randomized block design was used with the following seven treatments: 0, 50, 100, 500, 1000 and 2000 mg L−1 of GA3 and dry seeds without pre-soaking, with five replications of 20 seeds. The seeds were treated with fungicide and sown in tubes containing substrate. After 60 days, evaluations and transplantation were carried out. In the experiment with older pyrenes (seeds stored for seven months), there was high seed mortality (96.54%) and a small emergence rate (3.45%). On the other hand, when new pyrenes were used, the percentage of dead seeds was 32.71% and emergence was 62.28%. GA3 did not stimulate germination or the diameter of C. brasiliense tree seedlings, except for stem length. The 2000 concentration provided a greater stem length and greater leaf area compared to dry seeds.

ABSTRACT The study of arthropod communities foraging on monocultures of native plants (e.g. Caryocar brasiliense) in biodiversity hotspots (e.g. Brazilian Cerrado) is important to understand the processes driving their performance. This study evaluated the possible interactions between galling herbivores, free-feeding arthropods, and of their natural enemies on C. brasiliense trees, in an orchard (monoculture). The possible competition observed were: i) between galling insects with defoliators and phytophagous mites, ii) between sucking insects, iii) between phytophagous mites and, iv) between Aphis gossypii (Hemiptera: Aphididae) with Histiostoma sp. (Acari: Histiostomidae) on C. brasiliense trees. Numbers of predators and prey, parasitoids and hosts, and predators and parasitoids were directly related among them. The competitive interactions between herbivorous predator and parasitoid may reduce Eurytoma sp. (Hymenoptera: Eurytomidae) populations, a potential pest of C. brasiliense. The predator Zelus armillatus (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) and the parasitoids Sycophila sp. (Hymenoptera: Eurytomidae) and Ablerus magistretti (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) are important to determine the numbers of Eurytoma sp. and of its galls. These natural enemies may be important to control this galling insect on C. brasiliense trees. The arthropod competition affected their guild associated to C. brasiliense trees.

Introduction: Galling insects manipulate the development of their host plants. Galls are rich in secondary metabolites, such as phenolic compounds and terpenes. Caryocar brasiliense acts as a host of galling insects. Few studies report the impacts of this plant-insect interaction on the species' morphology, physiology, and secondary metabolism. Objective: The purpose of this study was to verify if there is a correlation between the levels of total phenols and flavonoids in C. brasiliense leaf extracts and environmental variables, such as temperature and precipitation, throughout the year, and to evaluate how galling insects can interfere in this seasonality. Methods: Ethanol extracts from leaves were obtained by soxhlet extraction. The main classes of secondary metabolites were detected by phytochemical prospecting. The levels of total phenols and flavonoids were quantified by the Folin-Dennis tests and complexation reaction with aluminum chloride, respectively. Pearson 's correlation coefficient shows that the levels of phenols and flavonoids were correlated with the average monthly maximum temperatures and precipitation accumulation, respectively, recorded in Gurupi - Tocantins. Results and Discussion: Phytochemical prospecting indicated flavonoids, saponins, tannins, triterpenes, steroids, and alkaloids in both extracts. In C. brasiliense, the samples of healthy leaves suffered a greater variation in the levels of phenols (68.39±2.3 to 279.34±3.1 mg GAE g-1 extract) and flavonoids (164.06± 3.0 at 269.03±3.6 mg QE g-1 extract) compared to leaf samples with galls. A strong positive correlation was found between the contents of total phenols and maximum temperatures and a strong negative correlation with precipitation through Pearson's correlation. Conclusions: The variations observed in the levels of phenols and flavonoids in the extracts of C. brasiliense seem to be related to abiotic factors and the herbivory promoted by the galling insect. The study was performed in the municipality of Montes Claros, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, over 3 years. Three types of areas were studied: 1) Cerrado, 2) pasture, and 3) a university Campus. Several chlorotic spots were detected on leaves with larger populations of Tetranychus sp. and Eutetranychus sp. (Tetranychidae). The greatest numbers of Agistemus sp. (Stigmaeidae) on leaves and Histiostoma sp. (Histiostomidae) and Proctolaelaps sp. (Ascidae) on fruits were observed in the pasture, and that of Histiostoma sp. on leaves in the pasture and on the university Campus. In general, the herbivorous mites (e.g., Tetranychus sp.) found on C. brasiliense plants were correlated with more clayey soils with a higher cationic exchange capacity; larger populations of mites (e.g., Agistemus sp. and Histiostoma sp.) were found on the C. brasiliense trees with the largest crown sizes; and associations between predator mites (e.g., Agistemus sp.) and phytophagous mites (e.g., Tetranychus sp.1) were observed. Greater habitat diversity and more complex plant architectures favored the mite populations. The positive effect of loamier soil on herbivorous mites indicates that these species are adapted to Cerrado conditions. Some recorded species of herbivorous mites can be pests in commercial plantations of C. brasiliense.

Abstract Caryocar brasiliense Camb. (Malpighiales: Caryocaraceae) trees have a wide distribution in the Cerrado, and it is protected by federal laws. The need to monitor and understand pest damage to crops and forests is a major motivation for the study of population distribution. The mites (Acari) population distributions on C. brasiliense are unknown. We studied seasonal mite population distribution and their ecological indices on C. brasiliense trees in Cerrado areas during three years. Greatest number of Agistemus sp. (Stigmaeidae), Histiostoma sp. (Histiostomidae), Proctolaelaps sp. (Ascidae), and diversity and species richness on leaves of C. brasiliense occurred in the autumn; Tetranychus sp.1 (Tetranychidae) on leaves in the autumn and winter; Histiostoma sp., and Proctolaelaps sp. in fruits in the summer. No significant effect of season was observed in the abundance of Eutetranychus sp., Tetranychus sp.2 (Tetranychidae) and Acaridae. The populations of Acaridae, Eutetranychus sp., Proctolaelaps sp. and Tetranychus sp.1 negatively correlated with temperature. Proctolaelaps sp. and Tetranychus sp.1 correlated negatively with rainfall and Eutetranychus sp. and Proctolaelaps sp. positively with sunlight. The period with low rainfall and relative humidity increases the phytophagous mites and their predators, especially Agistemus sp.. The Tetranychus sp. and Histiostoma sp. species may become pests in C. brasiliense in the Cerrado domain.

Background: The use of pequi by-product as animal feed is an appealing alternative to reduce overall production costs. However, little is known regarding its effects on animal performance as well as the ideal inclusion level in the diet. Objective: To evaluate performance, intake, and digestibility of confined lambs receiving diets containing different levels of pequi byproduct as a partial substitute for corn silage. Methods: The experiment was conducted in Curvelo, Brazil, using twenty-five crossbred Santa Inês male lambs (17.83 ± 1.73 kg) aged six months for 92 days. Increasing levels of pequi by-product (0, 6, 12, 18, and 24%) replacing corn silage were evaluated in a completely randomized design. Analysis of variance and regression were performed, with 5% significance level. Results: Inclusion of pequi by-product did not influence (p>0.05) average daily gain, total weight gain, or feed conversion ratio. No effect (p>0.05) was also observed on intake of dry matter, organic matter, ether extract, crude protein, neutral detergent fiber, total carbohydrates, and total digestible nutrients. However, a linear decrease was observed (p<0.05) in the apparent digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, ether extract, crude protein, neutral detergent fiber, total carbohydrates, and total digestible nutrients with increasing inclusion of pequi by-product. Conclusion: Pequi by-product is a potential substitute for corn silage in lamb diets because it does not influence animal performance and feed intake. The fixed oil from the inner mesocarp of Caryocar coriaceum Wittm. is used in the Chapada do Araripe region of Brazil for the treatment of genitourinary candidiasis. This study aimed to evaluate the chemical composition, antifungal activity, reduction of fungal virulence, and the preliminary toxicity of the fixed oil from the inner mesocarp of C. coriaceum tested against three Candida yeasts. The oil was characterized by gas chromatography (GC-MS and GC-FID). Antifungal activity was assessed using the serial microdilution method. Additionally, the potential of the oil as an enhancer of fluconazole action was tested at sub-inhibitory concentrations (MIC/8). The mechanism of action of C. coriaceum fixed oil was determined by evaluating the inhibition of morphological transition in Candida spp. The chemical composition of the fixed oil of C. coriaceum comprised both unsaturated and saturated fatty acids. Oleic (61 %) and palmitic (33 %) acids were the major constituents. Regarding its anti-Candida activity, the oil inhibited the growth of C. albicans (IC 50 : 371 μg/mL) and C. tropicalis (IC 50 : 830 μg/mL). Furthermore, the oil reversed the antifungal resistance of C. albicans and C. tropicalis, restoring the susceptibility to fluconazole and reducing their IC 50 from 12.33 μg/mL and 362 μg/mL to 0.22 μg/mL and 13.93 μg/mL, respectively. The fixed oil of C. coriaceum completely inhibited the morphological transition of C. albicans and C. tropicalis at a concentration of 512 μg/mL, but exhibited limited low antifungal potential against C. krusei. The observed antifungal activity may be attributed to the overproduction of reactive oxygen species. Additionally, the oil showed no toxic effect on the Drosophila melanogaster in vivo model. This study aimed to verify the genetic variability of matrix trees of Caryocar brasiliense, best known by the popular name of “pequi”, in a completely random delineation, with 20 treatments (matrices), and 50 repetitions (collected fruits in each matrix). We have evaluated the following traits of each fruit: weight (g), diameter (cm), length (cm), width (cm), and thickness (cm). As results we obtained a coefficient of experimental variation (CV e (%)) that showed advantageous values of 2.82 to 7.80, and the genotype heritability (h2 g (%)) of 55 to 95; both results can indicate favorable genetic control in the traits of the fruit. At the same time certain traits have significant genotypic and phenotypic correlations, which can be understood as an advantage for the improvement of the specie. In conclusion, we have noted that the population of Caryocar brasiliense has a high genetic variation, these results support the planning for genetic improvement programs.

Abstract In this study, we assessed the gas exchange in Caryocar brasiliense seedlings in water deficit conditions and their capacity to recover after rehydration. We assessed plant photosynthetic rates, internal carbon concentrations, stomatal conductance, transpiration rates, water-use efficiency, instantaneous carboxylation efficiency, chlorophyll index, and photosystem II quantum efficiency. All gas exchange parameters were reduced after the suspension of irrigation. Seedling photosynthetic rates approached zero after 12 days. The equilibrium was reestablished in all variables 11 days after re-initiating irrigation, with the exception of internal CO2 concentration and stomatal conductance. Exposure of seedlings to water stress resulted in drastically reduced photosynthetic processes. This reduction occurred due to the limitation of stomatal conductance and low rubisco carboxylation efficiency but not to irreversible damage photosystem II. All of these parameters demonstrated recuperation with rehydration, but only the photosynthetic rates reached initial control values.

O gênero Caryocar compreende 16 espécies de plantas endêmicas dos países tropicais da América das quais algumas constam na lista vermelha da IUCN com o status de ameaçada ou em perigo. Algumas das espécies de Caryocar são amplamente utilizadas como alimento e no uso medicinal por comunidades tradicionais, o que gera todo um conhecimento empírico sobre o potencial farmacológico desse gênero. Tem-se notado que os registros científicos, deste conhecimento, são feitos de forma mais intensa no Brasil, destacando-se as espécies C. brasiliense e C. coriaceum, esta última fortemente ligada à complementação de renda de comunidades e comerciantes no interior do estado do Ceará (Brasil). O fruto oleaginoso é o principal órgão estudado, rico em ácidos graxos, principalmente os ácidos oleico e palmítico, porém há ocorrência de diversos outros metabólitos relevantes, como compostos fenólicos e óleos essenciais oriundo do fruto e de outras partes da planta. Além dos estudos de caracterização química, uma variedade de atividades biológicas tem sido registradas para o gênero, que demonstrou possuir diversos efeitos como anti-inflamatório, antioxidante e cicatrizante. In this study the physicochemical characterization of the pulp and almond fixed oil was carried out; their antibacterial activity and aminoglycoside antibiotic modifying action against standard and multiresistant Gram-positive and -negative bacteria were investigated using the broth microdilution assay. Physical properties such as moisture, pH, acidity, peroxide index, relative density and refractive index indicate stability and chemical quality of the oils. In the GC/MS chemical composition analysis, a high unsaturated fatty acid content and the presence of oleic and palmitic acids were observed in the oils. In the antibacterial assay, more significant results were obtained for Escherichia coli, while other standard and multi-resistant strains presented MIC values ≥ 1024 μg/mL. Furthermore, the fixed oils in association with antibiotics were able to significantly improve antibacterial activity against S. aureus with a reduction in MICs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective was to study the spatial distribution of the mite population in the pequi trees (Caryocar brasiliense). A completely randomized design was used and evaluated the spatial distribution of mites according to the orientation of the branches; part of the canopy; part of the leaf and foliar surface. The part of canopy of the tree and the orientation of the branches did not influence the mite population in leaves and fruits. The largest amount of Histiostoma sp. was observed in the proximal part of the leaf. The surface of the leaf determined the presence of mites and a greater number of Agistemus sp., EuTetranychus sp., Tetranychus sp.1 and 2, Histiostoma sp. and Proctolaelaps sp. was observed on the abaxial surface. A high-performance pequi carotenoid extraction process was developed using ionic liquid-based ethanolic solutions and a factorial design strategy to search for a potential substitute for the artificial azo dye yellow tartrazine. All- trans -antheraxanthin was identified with HPLC-PAD-MSn for the first time in pequi samples. [BMIM][BF4] was the most efficient ionic liquid, and the maximization process condition was the solid–liquid ratio R (S/L) of 1:3, the co-solvent ratio R (IL/E) of 1:1 ([BMIM][BF4]: ethanol), and three cycles of extraction with 300 s each and yielded 107.90 μg carotenoids/g of dry matter. The ionic liquid-ethanolic solution recyclability was accomplished by freezing and precipitating with an average recovery of 79 %. In CIELAB parameters, pequi carotenoid extracted with [BMIM][BF4] was brighter and yellower than the artificial azo dye yellow tartrazine. A color change of 11.08 and a hue* difference of 1.26° were obtained. Furthermore, carotenoids extracted with [BMIM][BF4] showed antioxidant activity of 35.84 μmol of α-tocopherol. O pequizeiro se destaca pela força econômica exercida no cerrado, seu fruto é utilizado em preparações além de apresentar propriedades tecnológicas em diversos produtos. A pectina, utilizada como gelificante ou estabilizante, pode ser extraída da casca do pequi, a qual corresponde à aproximadamente 80% do peso total do fruto e que é normalmente descartada. O objetivo deste trabalho foi extrair pectina da casca do pequi utilizando ácido cítrico e compará-la com a pectina comercial aplicada na formulação de geléia de pimenta dedo-de-moça. Foi aplicada análise sensorial utilizando teste de aceitação com escala hedônica estruturada de nove pontos. A geleia de pimenta dedo-de-moça elaborada a partir de pectina extraída da casca do pequi alcançou boa aceitação por parte dos consumidores, atingindo nota média acima de 7,0 para quatro dos cinco atributos avaliados, porém diferenciou estatisticamente da geléia produzida com pectina comercial em aparência, cor, textura e sabor. Conclui-se que a casca do pequi é uma alternativa viável para extração de pectina e aplicação em geleias.

The Cerrado is one of the six Brazilian biomes and offers a wide variety of edible fruit species. This article is the result of an outreach program entitled Cagaita and Pequi, Economic and Social Importance of the Population of Sete Lagoas, created in 2014. It aimed to take information and build knowledge in the community about the possibility that the fruits of the Cerrado present, especially pequi and cagaita. He sought to contribute to raising awareness of the preservation of the environment and the inclusion of low-income local people, who can use the fruits as alternative food and generate income, thereby protecting and ensuring the survival of future generations and countless families that use the fruits. Still, he tried to contribute to the training and education of the students of the courses of Food Engineering and Bachelor's Degree in Interdisciplinary Biosystems UFSJ. Resumo O Cerrado é o segundo maior bioma brasileiro e apresenta grande diversidade de frutos que possuem alto valor nutricional, sabor e aroma característicos, compostos bioativos com propriedades antioxidantes e apelo saudável. O mercado consumidor visa a produtos com apelo natural e funcional, e, pelo fato de haver grandes perdas pós-colheita dos frutos do cerrado, cabe à indústria de alimentos aliar tais propriedades dos frutos à elaboração de novos produtos com valor agregado e maior tempo de vida de prateleira. O presente trabalho apresenta uma revisão com o objetivo de listar e caracterizar os frutos do cerrado (pequi, bocaiuva, mangaba, cagaita, baru, murici, mama-cadela, buriti, araticum e guabiroba), apresentando estudos com possíveis aplicações na indústria de alimentos.

ABSTRACT The Brazilian Cerrado, a global biodiversity hotspot, has been widely converted by agricultural expansion and pasture establishment. As a result of these activities, several plant species have experienced population declines such as pequi (Caryocar brasiliense ). We analyzed the feasibility of economic use of C. brasiliense based on population structure and fruit productivity. The average fruit production was high and significantly different between 2013 (515 fruits ind-1) and 2014 (344 fruits ind-1) (t = 2.32, p < 0.01), with 33% less fruit production in 2014. The canopy area (r2 = 0.22, p < 0.05) was the only population parameter related to productivity (2013). One hectare may yield an average of one ton of complete fruits, which is equivalent to up to 16 liters of pulp oil. The family income obtained with oil pulp sale could up to R$ 1,080 (US$ 327). We support the hypothesis that high pequi fruit productivity makes the extraction of this resource viable, especially for giant earthworm extractors.

In tropical regions, a great proportion of trees and shrubs shed their leaves over the dry season. Since gall-inducing insects are generally host species-specific, where do they go when their hosts have no leaves? There is practically no research into dormancy strategies of tropical galling insects. We hypothesised that the galling insect Eurytoma sp. (Chalcidoidea, Eurytomidae) undergo dormancy inside their galls on shed leaves of the host plant Caryocar brasiliense Camb. (Caryocaraceae). The insects would emerge from the galls in synchrony with the sprouting of new leaves, at the beginning of the wet season, stimulated by increased moisture after the first rain of the wet season. In order to test that, we collected leaves from the leaf litter in the last month of the dry season and gently showered half of them in a sink to simulate rain. In the two weeks before the first rainfall, the watered leaves presented an over trifold higher gall eclosion rate than the ones in the control group. There is no previous account of a tropical galling insect undergoing dormancy inside galls in the leaf litter. We contrast this evidence with the possibility that, at least in the tropics, galls may also have had an adaptive value as dormancy structures during their evolutionary history, and evolved in response to the deciduousness of plants growing in harsh environments. Abstract Pequi is a local important Brazilian fruit, which presents substantial phenolic compounds that justify the processing of this fruit. Here we investigated the clarification and concentration of pequi fruit extract by membrane processes. Microfiltration through a membrane of 0.22 μm was applied to clarify the pequi extract and total solids and lipids were reduced in 50 and 65%, respectively. However, the microfiltered extract still presented a cloudy appearance (turbidity of 649 NTU) and sequential processes (ultra and nanofiltration) were applied for a further clarification and concentration. Sequential ultra and nanofiltrations presented retention factor lower than 45% for total polyphenol compounds. Ultrafiltration was especially efficient in retaining larger molecules (ellagic acid), while the smallest molecule (p -coumaric acid) was retained by the sequential nanofiltration process. Direct ultra and nanofiltration processes presented greater retention factors and yields than the sequential processes. However, the permeate flux in the direct process were lower than in the sequential membrane filtration processes. Thus, sequential membrane filtration processes are recommended to clarify and fractionate pequi fruit extract, while direct ultra and nanofiltrations presented the greatest retention factors and yields for bioactive compounds from pequi extract. Abstract This work reports the obtaining of the methyl derivative – BP1 (biodiesel) and trimethylolpropyl derivative – BP2 (biolubricant) of the pequi oil – OP, its characterization and evaluation of the thermal degradation of the trimethylolpropyl derivative through thermogravimetric analysis in conjunction with Fourier transform (TG-FTIR). Biodiesel was prepared through homogeneous methyl route and potassium hydroxide as catalyst. Biolubricant was prepared using trimethylolpropane and biodiesel (1/4 M ratio) and sodium methoxide as catalyst. Spectroscopy techniques such as infrared with Fourier transform (FT-IR), and nuclear magnetic resonance of hydrogen and carbon (NMR 1H and 13C) were used in the analysis of the products. Physicochemical properties such as acid number, iodine number, specific mass, and kinematic viscosity were also determined under international standard. Thermogravimetric analysis of the pequi biodiesel was performed in three different heating rates in order to evaluate the activation energy of the biodiesel by using the method proposed by Flynn-Wall-Ozawa, and the value found was 67.07 kJ·mol−1. For the biolubricant, the thermogravimetric analysis in conjunction with Fourier transform (TG-FTIR) provided interesting comprehension of the oxidation process for trimethylolpropyl esters, describing the steps of volatilization and combustion. The species Caryocar coriaceum Wittm (C. coriaceum), is popularly employed in northeast of Brazil for culinary purposes and in folk medicine. The oil from its fruit, deignated Pequi, is commonly used to treat inflammatory problems, and its leaves to treat viral infections. However, comprehensive knowledge regarding the pharmacological properties attributed to these plant parts is still scarce. Thus, this study aimed to explore the in vivo antioxidant potential of aqueous extract of the leaves (AEL) and Pequi pulp oil (PPO) on the pro-oxidative effects induced by paraquat (PQ) using Drosophila melanogaster (D. melanogaster) as a model. These flies were fed with either standard or AEL and PPO supplemented diets prior to (pre-treatment for 7 days) or concomitantly (co-treatment for 5 days) with PQ. D. melanogaster administered PQ exhibited locomotor deficits and a higher rate of mortality. PQ induced significant changes in the antioxidant/oxidant status of D. melanogaster, including significant (1) increase in levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and lipid peroxidation; (2) elevation in the activity of antioxidant enzymes catalase (CAT) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and marked up-regulation in mRNA expression of stress-related genes for CAT, superoxide dismutase (SOD), thioredoxin reductase and Keap-1. Aside for mortality rates, AEL and PPO treatments reduced PQ-induced oxidative stress and motor impairments.
