The genus Lodosocoris Ahmad & Afzal, 1986 (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pentatomidae: Pentatominae: Halyini) is recorded for the first time from India. Prior to this publication, the genus was monotypic so far, containing only Lodosocoris azhari Ahmad & Afzal, 1986 from Pakistan. Herein, the genus Lodosocoris is redescribed along with the description of Lodosocoris santhae sp. nov., based on specimens from Arunachal Pradesh, a region in northeastern India. Lodosocoris santhae sp. nov is described and illustrated based on male and female genitalia. The diagnostic characters of the new species are compared with L. azhari.

Zhengica cornuta gen. nov., sp. nov. (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pentatomidae: Pentatominae: Pentatomini) from Shanxi, China, is described, illustrated, and its phylogenetic affinities are discussed. The genus is recognized as a generalized member of the clade of Pentatoma Olivier, 1789 and related genera, its phylogenetically closest relative is probably Cervicoris Hsiao & Cheng, 1977.

The stink bug genus Ochrophara Stål, 1871 (Hemiptera, Heteroptera, Pentatomidae, Pentatominae, Sephelini) is dis-tributed in the Oriental Region, including southern China; however, no species has been recorded in Japan. To date, O. chinensis Zheng & Liu, 1987 has only been reported in China. In the present study, Ochrophara and O. chinensis were recorded in Japan for the first time based on materials from Okinawa and Ishigaki islands of the Ryukyu Islands. Oki-nawa Island is the northernmost locality for this genus. The species was attracted to artificial light on Okinawa Island.

Pentatomidae is the third largest family of true bugs, comprising over 40 tribes. Few tribes have been studied in a phylogenetic context, and none of them have been examined using molecular data. Moreover, little is known about the evolution of key morphological characters widely used in taxonomic and phylogenetic studies at multiple levels. Here, we conduct a phylogenetic study of the tribe Chlorocorini (Pentatominae) combining 69 morphological characters and five DNA loci. We use the inferred phylogeny to reconstruct the evolution of key morphological characters such as the spined humeral angles of the pronotum, a dorsal projection on the apices of the femora and characters of male genitalia. We provide solid evidence that the tribe as currently recognized is not monophyletic based both on DNA and morphological data. The generaArveliusSpinola andEludocorisThomas were consistently placed outside of the Chlorocorini, while the remaining genera were found to form a monophyletic group. We also show that nearly all morphological diagnostic characters for the tribe are homoplastic. The only exception is the development of the hypandrium, which, contrary to expectations for genital traits, showed the slowest evolutionary rates. In contrast, the most rapidly evolving trait is the length of the ostiolar ruga, which may be attributed to selection favoring anti-predatory behavior and other functions of its associated scent glands. Lastly, we also provide a preliminary glimpse of the main phylogenetic relationships within the Pentatomidae, which indicates that most of the included subfamilies and tribes are not monophyletic. Our results suggest that the current subfamily-level classification of Pentatomidae is not adequate to reflect its evolutionary history, and we urge for a more complete phylogeny of the family.

The Pentatoma semiannulata is an important fruit pest in Chinese agricultural system. In current study, the complete mitochondrial genome of P. semiannulata is determined. This mitogenome is 15,515 bp in size and comprises of 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, two ribosomal RNA genes, and a control region. Gene order is identical to that of the putative ancestral arrangement of insects. All protein-coding genes initiate with ATN, except for ATP8, COX1 and NAD1 use GTG or TTG as the start codon, and terminate with TAA with the exception for COX2 which uses a single T residue as the stop codon. All tRNAs, ranging from 62 to 72 bp, have the clover-leaf structure except for tRNASer(AGN). The monophyly of Pentatomidae is highly supported by the phylogenetic tree and P. semiannulata is very close to other herbivorous species of the remaining Pentatomidae species.

This note presents the first record of Nezara viridula in the Sandomierz Lowland (south-eastern Poland). It is the fourth record of this invasive species in Poland.

New records are given for the pentatomid Pellaea stictica Dallas, 1851. The new records extend the distribution of the species in Perú towards the south. The presence of the species in Chile is confirmed by the collection of new material. The first exact locality record from Paraguay is provided. Additionally, the first teratological case in this species is described. The case belongs to a right antennal oligomery with atrophy and anarthrogenesis.

The first hostplant record on Prosopis tamarugo (Fabaceae) is given for the Chilean green stink bug Chinavia chilensis . Observations were made in San Pedro de Atacama, Antofagasta Region, Chile. It was recorded that the females oviposite on the three. Later, nymphs develop on the fruits. The significance of this finding is discussed and it is concluded that C. chilensis may be highly specialized to feed on this vegetal species.

Four complete mitogenomes of Eysarcoris rosaceus, E. montivagus, E. gibbosus, E. annamita and one near-complete mitochondrial genome of E. ventralis were sequenced and used to explore the phylogenetic relationships of tribes within the subfamily Pentatominae. The mitogenomes range from 15,422 to 16,043 base pairs (bp) in length and encode 37 genes, including 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), two rRNA genes, 22 tRNA genes (21 in E. ventralis), and a control region. Similar to other heteropteran species, the AT contents of the sequenced species were higher than their GC contents. The most frequently used start/stop codon was ATN/TAA. GTG was only found in atp6 and atp8 of E. gibbosus. All transfer RNA genes (tRNAs) exhibit the typical cloverleaf secondary structure, except for the trnS1 and trnV, which lacks the stem of the DHU arm. The length and copy number of repeat units were conserved within Eysarcoris, with the exception of E. gibbosus. Phylogenetic analyses based on mitogenomes using both maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian inference (BI) methods strongly supported the relationship among tribes within Pentatominae and confirmed that Graphosoma should be an intermediate lineage of Pentatominae. The relationship between Eysarcoris and Carbula was strongly supported and combined with our previous geometric morphometrics and chromosomal studies, suggest the Eysarcoris should belong to the tribe Eyasrcorini. This work will help to enhance our understanding of mitochondrial genomic evolution and phylogenetic relationships in Pentatominae.

The taxonomic revision of ‘Hypatropis complex’, composed by Amauromelpia Fernandes & Grazia, Hypatropis Bergroth, Luridocimex Grazia, Fernandes & Schwertner, Stysiana Grazia, Fernandes & Schwertner, and Pedinonotus Fernandes & Grazia, updating the genitalic terminology, are presented here. The differential diagnosis of ‘Hypatropis complex’ and all of its members are provided. Photographs of the type-specimens and genitalia, species distributional map with new records, and a key to genera and species are also provided.

The genus Surenus Distant, 1901 (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pentatomoidea: Pentatomidae: Pentatominae: Halyini) is revisited and found to be a junior subjective synonym of the genus Agathocles Stål, 1876 (currently Pentatominae: Rolstoniellini). The genus Agathocles and its type species, Agathocles limbatus Stål, 1876, are redescribed. Lectotype of Surenus normalis Distant, 1901 (= Agathocles normalis (Distant, 1901) comb. nov.) is designated and the unknown male of the species is described. Agathocles yunnanensis Zhang & Lin, 1984, syn. nov., is considered junior subjective synonym of A. limbatus. Two new species are described: Agathocles flavipes sp. nov. from India (Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu) and A. joceliae sp. nov. from Malaysia (Kelantan, Perak). The new species differ from their congeners mainly by the morphology of mandibular plates, length of antennomeres I, IIa and IIb, body length, and structure of male genitalia. Agathocles dubius Distant, 1921 is transferred to the genus Caystrus Stål, 1861 (Pentatominae: Caystrini) based on examination of its holotype with the resulting new combination: Caystrus dubius (Distant, 1921), comb. nov. One new combination is proposed, Paramecocoris ruficornis (Fieber, 1851), comb. nov. (from preoccupied Paramecus Fieber, 1851), and its type locality is clarified as Tenasserim (south Myanmar). Gender agreement and authorship of the name Riazocoris niger Ahmad & Afzal, 1977 in Ahmad et al. (1977: 161) are corrected and status of its name bearing type is clarified as lectotype. The following new distribution records are given: A. limbatus from Cambodia, China (Guangxi, Tibet), Laos and Thailand, A. normalis, Caystrus obscurus (Distant, 1901a) and Critheus lineatifrons Stål, 1869 from Laos, Amasenus corticalis Stål, 1863 from Cambodia, Indonesia (E Kalimantan), Laos, Myanmar and Thailand, and Rolstoniellus boutanicus (Dallas, 1849) from Vietnam. Based on characters of external morphology and genitalia, the genus Agathocles is compared with representatives of the genera Halys Fabricius, 1803 (Halyini), Caystrus (Caystrini), Laprius Stål, 1861 (Myrocheini), and Exithemus Distant, 1902 (currently in Rolstoniellini). As a result, the genus Agathocles is here transferred to the tribe Caystrini. The genus Kyrtalus Van Duzee, 1929 is tentatively placed in Myrocheini based on the presence of sulcate mesosternum and femora provided with teeth.

Several stink bugs in the subfamily Pentatominae are crop pests or have the potential to damage plants of economic importance. In the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, where agriculture plays a major role in the economy, the knowledge about pest stink bugs is fragmented and, in some instances, outdated. This work provides a summary of Pentatominae species recorded in Rio Grande do Sul feeding on the four most important grain crops for the state, i.e. soybean, rice, maize, and wheat, plus canola, an emerging crop. This survey is enhanced with new records from scientific collections, a short diagnosis for each species, distribution maps, an identification key, and carefully illustrated to allow for species recognition in the field. With this work, we aim to reunite the scattered knowledge of the group in one single revision, and provide a useful tool for identifying the pest stink bugs of Rio Grande do Sul.

The Carpocorini are distributed worldwide, and it is one of the most speciose tribes within the Pentatomidae with 127 genera and more than 500 valid species. Recently, Adustonotus Bianchi was described to contain eight species formerly placed within Euschistus Dallas. Among them, Adustonotus grandis (Rolston) and Adustonotus latus (Dallas) are remarkable for their large size. Herein, the phylogenetic position of a new taxon is inferred by a total evidence analysis based on 85 morphological characters and four molecular markers. Adustonotus graziae sp. nov. is described, and is recovered in a polytomic lineage, including A. grandis and A. latus. These species share a solid combination of features that enable them to be separated from the other Adustonotus species (e.g., large size, the humeral angles spatulate and exceptionally produced, and the capsula seminalis shortened). Illustrations of external and internal genitalia, and a distributional map are provided.

The pentatomid genus Placocoris Mayr is removed from Pentatominae and placed in Discocephalinae: Ochlerini based on the trichobothrial arrangement. Within the Ochlerini Placocoris shares characteristics with a clade composed of Adoxoplatys and allies including the rostrum arising anteriorad, abdomen with tubercle at middle base received by a notch in the metasternum, bucculae confluent posteriorly, pronotum flat, and a double row of spines on the femora. It appears to share the same host plants with Neoadoxoplatys, species of bamboo. It is further concluded that the genus Chrysodarecus Breddin is a junior synonym of Placocoris Mayr.

Carpocorini is the largest tribe of Pentatominae, containing 127 genera and more than 500 species distributed worldwide. A new genus, Jocezia n. gen., and a new species, Jocezia inusitata n. sp., from Argentina are described and illustrated. The new genus is included in the Hypatropis group, together with the genera Hypatropis, Amauromelpia, Luridocimex and Stysiana, and characterized by the head in lateral view with the mandibular plates in a higher level than clypeus and the absence of parameres. An updated key to the Hypatropis group genera is provided.

The genus Sarju Ghauri, 1977 (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae: Pentatominae: Halyini) is redescribed along with the description of a new species, Sarju brevirostrata sp. nov. S. farida Ghauri, 1977 and S. nigricollis (Westwood, 1837) are redescribed based on the availability of specimens and the species Cahara nodula Fan and Liu, 2013 was transferred from Cahara to Sarju and proposed Sarju nodula comb.nov. Therefore, at present Sarju comprises 11 species worldwide. A key to the eight species of Sarju occurring in India is also provided.

The knowledge about the monotypic genera Steleocoris Mayr and Theloris Thunberg is restricted to their original descriptions and subsequent nomenclatural acts. These genera are primarily distributed in South Africa and are two of the few genera of Carpocorini (Pentatomidae: Pentatominae) occurring in Africa. Here, we redescribe Steleocoris comma (Thunberg) and Theloris costata (Thunberg) and illustrate the genitalia of both sexes for the first time. Also, an occurrence map is provided based on collection labels from analyzed specimens and records available on GBIF and the web repository iNaturalist.org.

Halyomorpha halys (Stål, 1855) – a species native to south-eastern Asia was introduced to Europe and recently to Poland, where it was reported so far only from three sites located in the southern and central part of the country. This paper presents new records of Halyomorpha halys from south-eastern Poland. These are the first records of this invasive species in the Eastern Beskids and the Lower San Valley.

Here, we determined the complete mitogenome of Graphosoma rubrolineata, as the first representative for the subfamily Podopinae. This mitogenome is 15,633 bp long and contains 37 typical mitochondrial genes. The genome size, gene arrangement, A + T content, codon usage and secondary structures of 22 tRNAs of the G. rubrolineata mitogenome were similar to that of other sequenced pentatomoids. This mitogenome exhibited a reverse nucleotide strand bias, i.e. positive GC-skew (0.021) and negative AT-skew (−0.086). Phylogenetic analyses based on mitogenomic data strongly supported the monophyly of each of the five superfamilies within Pentatomomorpha and recognized a phylogeny of (Aradoidea + (Pentatomoidea + (Lygaeoidea + (Pyrrhocoroidea + Coreoidea)))). However, G. rubrolineata clustered with three Pentatominae species, suggesting that Pentatominae probably was not monophyletic, or Podopinae may not be a valid taxonomic group. The mitogenome sequence of G. rubrolineata could contribute for better understanding of population genetics and evolution of this insect pest.

The genus Chinavia Orian has a great diversity of species, being distributed in the Nearctic, Neotropical and Afrotropical regions (Rolston 1983; Schwertner & Grazia 2007, Grazia & Schwertner 2017). The genus is included in the subfamily Pentatominae, tribe Nezarini, whose individuals retain their green coloration after death, average size between 9 and 19 mm, and considered polyphagous (Rolston 1983; Schwertner et al. 2002; Rider 2020). Some species of Chinavia are recorded as important crop pests in different countries (e.g. Matesco et al. 2007; Herbert & Toews 2012), and those species are better known regarding distribution, ecology and other biological aspects. However, the great majority of species is known only for the adult morphology, and there are still problems concerning the correct identification of the species due to their wide distribution.

Sibaria Stål is a genus of Pentatomidae occurring exclusively in the Neotropical region. Since its description, little information has been added to the knowledge of the taxon. The hypothesis of monophyly of Sibaria was recently supported by a phylogenetic analysis based on morphological and molecular data. The purpose of this study is to provide a review of Sibaria, redescribe the valid species, and describe a new species. The genus includes four species: S. andicola Breddin, S. armata (Dallas), S. englemani Rolston, and S. amazonica sp. nov.. Diagnoses, macrophotographs (habitus, external and internal genitalia), an identification key, and distribution records of the species are also provided.

Two new species are described, Elanela colombiana sp. nov. from Colombia, with disk of scutellum callused, ivory and abdominal sternite VIII immaculate medially, and Elanela ecuatoriana sp. nov., from Ecuador, distinguished by legs with black spots and the dorsal rim and ventral rim of pygophore with a medial process. Illustrations of habitus and genitalia of each species are provided and the distributional map was updated to include the new species and a new record of E. jordi. Additionally, the identification key to the species of Elanela is updated to include the new species.

The genusRhyncholeptaBergroth, 1911 (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pentatomidae: Pentatominae: Chlorocorini) is redescribed and five species-group taxa are recognized, keyed, their diagnostic characters illustrated, and the distribution reviewed. Among the five taxa, two species and one subspecies are recognized as new:RhyncholeptagrandicallosagrandicallosaBergroth, 1911 (Brazil, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname),Rhyncholeptagrandicallosacentroamericanasubsp. n.(Belize, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama),Rhyncholeptahenryisp. n.(French Guiana),RhyncholeptameinanderiBecker & Grazia-Vieira, 1971 (Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru), andRhyncholeptawheelerisp. n.(Guyana). The structure of the male genital capsule was found to be the only reliable character for identifying species-group taxa. For this reason, a simultaneous application has been submitted to the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature to set aside the non-informative female lectotype ofRhyncholeptagrandicallosagrandicallosaand replace it with the male neotype suggested herein. Based on the available label data and our field experience, most of the specimens were collected by various types of light traps in or near dense forests. Adults can be collected throughout the year.

The first records of Dryadocoris apicalis for Albania are reported. Information on the known distribution of the species is summarized.

Here, we sequenced and annotated the complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of Palomena viridissima (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae). This mitogenome was 15,118 bp long, comprising of 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA genes (tRNAs), 2 ribosomal RNA genes (rrnL and rrnS) and a large non-coding control region. The P. viridissima mitogenome with an A + T content of 76.0%, presented a positive AT-skew (0.11) and a negative GC-skew (-0.13). Ten PCGs started with a typical ATN codon, two PCGs started with TTG (atp8, nad1), whereas the remaining one used AAC (cox1). All tRNAs had a typical secondary cloverleaf structure, except for trnS1 which lacked the dihydrouridine arm. The Bayesian phylogenetic analysis based on mitogenomic data supported a sister relationship of P. viridissima and Nezara viridula from the same tribe Nezarini and recovered a phylogeny of Pentatominae: (Menidini + (Strachiini + (Pentatomini + ((Cappaeini + Halyini) + (Eysarcorini + (Nezarini + Carpocori)))))).

The family Pentatomidae, the largest within the superfamily Pentatomoidae, comprises about 5,000 species; many of which are economically important pests. Although the phylogeny of Pentatomidae species has been studied using various molecular markers, their phylogenetic relationships remain controversial. Recently, mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) have been extensively employed to examine the phylogenetics and evolution of different insects, and in this study, we sequenced complete/near-complete mitochondrial genomes from five shield bug species of Eurydema to gain a better understanding of phylogenetic relationships in the Pentatomidae. The five mitogenomes ranged in length from 15,500 to 16,752 bp and comprised 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNAs (tRNAs), 2 ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs), and a control region. We compared mitogenomic characteristics of the Pentatomidae and constructed phylogenetic trees using Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood methods. Our results showed that gene arrangements, base composition, start/stop codons, gene overlaps, and RNA structures were conserved within the Pentatomidae and that congeneric species shared more characteristics. Saturation and heterogeneity analyses revealed that our PCGs and PCGRNA datasets were valid for phylogenetic analysis. Phylogenetic analyses showed consistent topologies based on BI and ML methods. These analyses strongly supported that Eurydema species belong to the tribe Strachiini, and formed a sister group with Pentatomini. The relationships among Eurydema species were shown to be consistent with their morphological features. (Strachiini + Pentatomini) was found to be a stable sibling of the clade comprising Cappaeini, Graphosomini, and Carpocorini. Furthermore, our results indicated that Graphosoma rubrolineatum (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) belongs to the Pentatominae and not the Podopinae.
