In the 19th century, women faced numerous challenges and restrictions in a patriarchal and male-dominated society, where their roles were rigidly defined and their contributions often underestimated. In The Return of Júlia Mann to Paraty (2021), Teolinda Gersão highlights a remarkable figure from this period. Júlia Mann confronted social norms and asserted her worth, defying the conventional expectations of German society. This article aims to highlight women's ability to challenge oppressive social norms, using Júlia Mann as an example; to analyze the value of women in a patriarchal society; and to investigate how Júlia transgressed social norms, contributing to the reconstruction of values related to women's roles. The methodology adopted is bibliographic, analytical, and critical-theoretical in nature, with an analysis of the literary work The Return of Júlia Mann to Paraty (2021). To understand Júlia Mann's trajectory and the prevailing ideas about women in a patriarchal society, authors such as Ana Gabriela Macedo and Ana Luísa Amaral (2005), Raymond Williams (2011), Heleieth Saffioti (2015), Gerda Lerner (2019), and Annabela Rita and Miguel Real (2021) will be used. Júlia Mann's actions highlight the importance of recognizing and valuing female contributions, serving as an inspiration for the fight for women's recognition and empowerment in society. This article investigates regional specificities of coronelism in the First Republic based on the historical experience of Goiás. A significant part of Brazilian legal and political historiography adhered to Victor Nunes Leal's thesis, according to which the republican coronelism, more than an expression of the private power of the coronels, would signify their weakness in a context of increasing state institutionality. The coronels would fight, with all means, to take over the public machine, starting to distribute its benefits to friends and its rigors to enemies. However, investigating the case of Goiás, based on the novel O tronco, by Bernardo Élis, with other documents from the period, Leal's thesis cannot explain the hypertrophy of the private power of the coronels in northern Goiás, that ignored or forcibly subjugated state power, with its laws, judges, police, etc. In conclusion, coronelism had different expressions in Brazil, which requires the differentiation of its specificities. Los orígenes del patriarcado se remontan a los comienzos del pensamiento filosófico, por no mencionar el religioso, y los cuestionamientos a esa noción vienen tomando cada vez más impulso a lo largo del mundo en los últimos años. Un reflejo académico de ese movimiento es la relectura crítica de los clásicos de la filosofía a la luz del avance de los feminismos y las consideraciones de género. Juliana Udi brinda en su introducción a Patriarca un análisis exhaustivo de un clásico de la filosofía política seguido de una traducción elegante y cuidadosamente anotada. Con ello intenta un regreso a las fuentes modernas del patriarcado político para identificar sus fundamentos teóricos y su contexto histórico, pero también para discutir desde una perspectiva de género su persistencia social en nuestros días.

O artigo discute a importância dos domínios público e privado na análise feminista, destacando a presença da dicotomia entre essas esferas nas teorias do patriarcado e na interseccionalidade. A separação entre o público e o privado tem raízes históricas e está relacionada à opressão das mulheres na esfera privada e sua exclusão da esfera pública. A exclusão das mulheres da teoria política tradicional e a invisibilidade de suas identidades de gênero são criticadas, apontando a importância de reconhecer a influência do gênero na esfera pública e na economia. A oposição entre público e privado é explorada nos estudos feministas e permeia as teorias do patriarcado e da interseccionalidade, aqui expressas pelos escritos de Pateman, Okin, Fraser, Walby, Hill Colins, Crenshaw, Davis e Bilge, evidenciando o potencial de complementaridade entre ambas as correntes teóricas

La difusión abrumadora que la filosofía política de Suárez alcanzó en la Europa del siglo XVII, queda confirmada por el debate que mantuvieron en 1644 el obispo anglicano John Maxwell y el ministro presbiteriano Samuel Rutherford en torno al origen legítimo del poder político. En sus tratados de signo político diametralmente opuesto, ambos recurren con frecuencia como a una autoridad al De legibus y a la Defensio fidei de Suárez, publicados treinta años antes. Metodológicamente el artículo ha sido elaborado a partir de un análisis comparativo de las doctrinas suarecianas con las contenidas en los tratados de Maxwell y Rutherford, accesibles gracias a la base de datos EEBO (Early English Books Online), de la Universidad de Michigan, así como al repositorio bibliográfico Internet Archive, con sede en San Francisco.

Este trabalho busca explicitar, a partir da teoria decolonial, dogmas e preceitos opressivos que circunscrevem a relação dominador x dominado, que advém de forma muito semelhante à relação colonizador x colonizado, explicitando que mesmo na ausência da política colonial, arrasta-se pelo mundo moderno, a existência da colonialidade. Pensando em como essas questões incidem no meio literário, busca-se fazer uma análise de da obra Compasso Binário (1972), de Arlete Nogueira da Cruz, a qual é costumeiramente marginalizada, tanto por ser escrito por mulher, quanto pelas questões que envolvem tabus, retratando o patriarcado opressivo e violências contra o corpo feminino, incidindo assim na colonialidade de gênero. Desse modo, este trabalho explicita a análise das personagens Baianinha e Natália, sendo uma prostituta e a outra estudante e estagiária de medicina, e consequentemente fazem parte de diferentes alas da sociedade ludovicense, no entanto as personagens têm suas vidas cruzadas na narrativa a partir da dominação masculina e da violência. Assim, parte-se do objetivo geral de realizar uma leitura analítica sob a abordagem da decolonialidade do romance maranhense Compasso Binário (1972) da escritora Arlete Nogueira da Cruz; quanto aos objetivos específicos tem-se o intuito de verificar como o romance Compasso Binário se relaciona com os aspectos que reverberam a colonialidade de gênero; e, analisar como as situações de dominação pater-colonial que são problematizadas na narrativa. Para tanta são utilizados os estudos de Lugones (2008), Maldonado-Torres (2016), e Mignolo (2017).

The present text is an excerpt from the Doctoral Thesis organized from the rescue of Literature by women in the 19th century, in Brazil. The objective was to present the novel O perdão by the gaucho writer Andradina de Oliveira and to deepen ideas about her narrative, which raises the issue of the traditional family structure of patriarchal culture at the time of physical and social transformations in gaucho society. Diana Palmer é uma das autoras mais lidas de romances sentimentais mundo afora. No Brasil, seus livros viraram best sellers de bancas de revistas, estando no patamar dos mais vendidos durante toda a década de 1990. Entrementes, a forma peculiar como a autora descreve as relações de gênero em seus romances é motivo de controvérsias entre seus próprios leitores. O perfil traçado como característico para suas personagens, tanto masculinos quanto femininos, de viés extremamente conservador, parece entrar claramente em choque com os valores que regiam as relações entre os sexos na última década do século XX, o que torna o seu sucesso estrondoso digno de um maior escrutínio acadêmico. Assim, tomamos como pergunta-chave deste estudo como as relações de gênero são apresentadas por Diana Palmer e em que medida refletem posicionamentos patriarcais encontrados na sociedade. Baseados neste contexto, este trabalho tem, pois, como foco analisar as representações de masculinidade e de feminilidade presentes nas obras da autora durante o período histórico citado. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo produzir uma análise do discurso, nos moldes de Thompson (1995), destas representações a partir de três de suas obras mais populares nesse período, as quais tornaram-se corpus de análise para esta pesquisa: Acreditar outra vez, Anjo do Oeste e Adeus ao Amor. Para tal, traçamos uma relação entre o seu discurso e a ideologia que o suporta no que diz respeito às representações do masculino e do feminino ali presentes.

Resumo Proponho escrever uma breve biografia de Maria Eremita de Souza, nascida no Serro/MG e falecida em 2003. Demonstro como sua trajetória existencial de mulher negra, professora e historiadora revela uma constante resistência aos padrões culturais provincianos, patriarcais, religiosos, sexistas, raciais e profissionais da conservadora cidade do Serro no século XX. Recriamos a partir de seus arquivos pessoais alguns dados biográficos e apresentamos uma discussão pari passu com algumas noções do movimento feminista contemporâneo, em especial a noção de “lugar de fala” interseccionada aos estudos sobre as “dinâmicas de mestiçagens” do Brasil colonial.

A dramaturgia espanhola do Século de Ouro, que criou o mito de D. Juan Tenorio, produziu igualmente um conjunto de obras dramáticas em que as protagonistas são mulheres marginais, violentas e dominadoras, que conseguem, transitoriamente, impor o seu poder numa sociedade estruturalmente patriarcal. É o caso das duas comedias intituladas La serrana de la Vera, inspiradas numa mesma tradição folclórica, e cujos autores são dois dos mais importantes escritores barrocos espanhóis: Lope de Vega e Luis Vélez de Guevara. Estas obras serão estudadas neste artigo em contraponto com um drama contemporâneo, La casa de Bernarda Alba, de Federico García Lorca, em que se representa uma forma mais subtil, e por isso mais eficaz e mais duradoura, de dominação.

The function of the "father" in the patriarchal family would be to represent the fundamental law: prohibitions considered necessary for the very constitution of the subject and of civilization. In view of the representations of this "paternal function" in the narratives of the short stories Hora de dormir, by Santiago Villela Marques and A terceira margem do rio, by João Guimarães Rosa, we intend to analyze both comparatively. It is interesting to note at the outset that both writers present regionalism in their works capable of putting in check the modern project of Brazilian civilization. Even if Rosa is canonical par excellence and Marques is still undergoing a process of recognition by the critic, the comparative analysis between the two texts can be considered pertinent and enriching for the literary studies. In this sense, it is pertinent to realize that the father's "monstrosity" in Rosa's tale would be closely linked to silence, to the abandonment of culture and to its binary logic incapable of giving satisfactory existential meaning to the members of this patriarchal family. This "monstrosity" would bring the family to an unacceptable moment of culture, that is, animalistic, since the patriarch would be much closer to the state of nature. In Marques's tale, the father's "monstrosity" would reside much more in the fact of making indiscriminate and irascible use of physical violence not to promote such a well-being or well-functioning family institution according to pre-determined precepts, but to point out his hierarchical position before the object condition of the mother and son Danilo. In this sense, the figure of the father is presented as someone who, despite representing socially the rule, the law and the structuring order of the patriarchal family, would promote the opposite, that is, its disruption and instability. In Rosa's narrative, this culture is also problematized, but in a more enigmatic and silent way. If in Marques's tale "civilization" would be irreversibly deformed due to the violent character of the father, in the Rosean text social institutions would fail to decode, classify, and control the patriarch's act, being also irreversibly questioned and emptied of meaning. Thus, in both texts patriarchal civilization finds itself bankrupt in its capacity to signify the world and to manage social relations satisfactorily. --- DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.22409/gragoata.2018n47a1172

Se pretende un acercamiento desde la sociología interaccionista, así como desde la lingüística cognitiva, a las particularidades de la posición contracultural tanto estético-popular como política de John Lennon y Yoko Ono basado en la reivindicación que combina metafóricamente, a su vez, el feminismo y la lucha contra el racismo y se anticipa, a inicios de la década de 1970, a concepciones expertas desde las ciencias sociales, principalmente latinoamericanas, que a partir de inicios de la década de 1990 sistematizan enfoques que correlacionan el racismo y lo étnico con el patriarcalismo desde perspectivas teórico-críticas básicamente ligadas a los estudios poscoloniales, a la denominada colonialidad del poder y a las investigaciones sobre la subalternidad.

A partir de uma abordagem comparatista, este trabalho tem por objetivo analisar a representação do feminino enquanto ressonância de uma cultura dominante masculina em A Casa de Bernarda Alba – Drama de mulheres em povoados da Espanha (1936), de Federico García Lorca, contemplando três perspectivas: cultural, de acordo com o conceito trazido por Roy Wagner de cultura enquanto invenção; histórica, a partir da teoria da meta-história proposta por Hayden White, que relativiza o campo ao reconhecer o jogo de influências que o mesmo sofre e ao inserir no discurso histórico uma dimensão ficcional; e uma perspectiva religiosa, com base na visão de Pierre Debergé sobre o papel da mulher na sociedade. A construção ficcional de Lorca configura-se como um jogo de ressonâncias signíficas, onde o espaço da mulher e sua voz se (des)constituem no emaranhado das invenções e convenções sociais, culturais e históricas, desvelando, assim, a sua condição de silenciamento

Este artigo tem como tema o problema filosófico da fundamentação da moral com o objetivo de apresentar o sentido e a validade de uma ética feminista. Parte-se da hipótese de que uma ética feminista se distinguiria das éticas antigas e apresentaria uma alternativa adequada ao problema da fundamentação da moral, bem como dos conflitos morais atuais, em especial, pelo tipo de solução que propõe, a qual segue uma lógica construída mediante uma práxis humana determinada. Em outros termos, o objetivo deste artigo é ajudar a compreender como um conteúdo da moralidade surgido de elementos históricos, temporais, culturais pode ser construído; nesse caso, ligado às condições das mulheres surgidas no meio social. Para tanto, será apresentada uma nova concepção de ética e o exemplo de uma ética capaz de orientar uma solução para conflitos morais atuais, a ética feminista do cuidado de Carol Gilligan

My essay provides a few elements to analyse how the neoconservative perspective on gender issues has evolved from its early phases to the last years. The aim is to highlight how neoconservative authors shifted from an openly patriarchal view of gender roles to more or less successful attempts at appropriating “feminist” themes and issues, in view of the affirmation of America’s moral superiority as a justification of hard power.

One of the main demands of the feminist movement that has manifested since 2018 has been to provide a "non-sexist education", indicating that the school system would be permeated by patriarchal logic. This article aims to contribute to the understanding of this problem, based on a look at its recent background. Specifically, it aims to give a synthetic vision to the political and ideological development of the main policies associated with sexuality and gender in the context of transition to democracy in Chile (1988-1998). Themes approached by literature can be visualized in society, whether incorporated into a real or dystopian setting, such as Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale. First published in 1985, this book addresses women's lives after a coup d'état that established a totalitarian and fundamentally Christian theonomy in a region of the United States. Takin this into account, this article approaches Atwood's work under a sociological reflection on patriarchalism. For such, studies by authors such as Simone de Beauvoir, Maria Luisa Ribeiro Ferreira, Flavia Biroli, Michelle Perrot, among others. From a sociological perspective, we believe it is possible to achieve an understanding of the manifestation of patriarchalism in The Handmaid's Tale and the implications that such a system had for the life of the characters, which makes possible a reflection about a society based on different socializations for men and women. This article aims to profile Malvina, Gabriela and Nacib from Gabriela, cravo e canela by Jorge Amado as subversive by means of observing how these three characters broke with the sexist discourse affiliated to the patriarchal ideology which was circulated and, consequently, preserved in the social-historic conjecture they lived in. Besides, we intend to relate these characters` subversity to the desidentification process approached by Pêcheux (1995). By means of Discourse Analysis (hereafter DA) concepts, we will evince not only Malvina, Gabriela and Nacib`s desidentification but also the one of the Ilheenses citizens(-subjects). In order to lay the foundation on literature, society and patriarchalism, we will mainly use Freyre (2003) and Candido (1951; 1999; 2006a; 2006b); for the DA, we will mention Pêcheux (1995), Althusser (1976), among others.

Este trabalho propõe uma análise da obra Ana Terra, de Érico Veríssimo, no qual se procura identificar espaços na narrativa que deixam evidentes as marcas de ordem patriarcal, vistas pelos estudos de Roberto Reis e Roberto DaMatta. Estes teóricos nos ajudam a elucidar as questões de patriarcalismo, sob os estudos de núcleo e nebulosa e pelas esferas sociais da casa, da rua e do outro mundo. A obra enquadra-se no regionalismo de 30, debruçando-se acima do mundo rural e apresentando personagens detentores de poder com figuras ao seu redor que representam os desvalidos ou com pouco prestígio social. Ressalta-se também que a personagem Ana Terra está representada na posição de mulher inserida em um contexto imoderadamente machista e, com base também em outros teóricos, verifica-se que o sistema patriarcalista favoreceu ao homem, o qual mantinha controle sobre a mulher. Como resultado, constata-se que elementos da narrativa atestam o sistema patriarcal, evidenciados nas esferas sociais (a casa, a rua e o outro mundo), mostrando-nos como se davam as relações interpessoais no meio em que estavam inseridos e, por meio da dicotomia núcleo e nebulosa, mapeiam-se as personagens na estrutura do romance.

The field of cultural/literary studies focuses on the identification of the phenomena responsible for the marginalization / subalternization of the subjects. Thus, the analysis of the waves of the feminist movement through the eyes of literature makes possible a greater approximation of society to the facts that have occurred and occur in the world, in order that the fight against inequality and patriarchalism perpetuate and become an increasingly tangible reality. It is the purpose of this article to contextualize the feminist waves through the analysis of two stories: "The Yellow Wallpaper" by author Charlotte Perkins Gilman, originally published in 1892 and "Woman Hollering Creek" by Sandra Cisneros, published in 1991. For this, we base this research mainly on the works of Pinto (2010), Devereux (2014), Anzaldua (1987), Bittencourt (2015), Walter (2015) and Saffioti (1986) and we realize that the almost 100 years that separate the two histories were marked by various achievements of the feminist agenda. Through the waves it became possible to study systematically the movement against oppression experienced by women and to situate literature as means of illustrating this path. This article studies the representation of violent women in colonial Potosí as told by Bartolomé Arzáns de Orsúa y Vela (1673-1736) in his Historia de la Villa Imperial de Potosí Following a contextualization of colonial violence and of the narrator’s ideological perspective in his description of women, the analysis focuses on the story of Estefanía, a 14 years old young woman. Arzáns shows, in this story, the social tensions between women and Potosi’s patriarchal society. This article aims to demonstrate that the crimes of this young woman, although narrated from a catholic and moralist perspective, portrait the drama of a young woman confronting a repressive patriarchal system. Thus, Arzáns’ text presents an ambivalence: on the one hand, by condemning the young woman, and on the other, by covertly admiring her life. The sentence “Oh dichosa pecadora” (Oh happy sinner) summarizes this ambiguity. The sinner is happy because she repents of her sins, and with the help of Virgin Mary it is believed that she will go to heaven, but, at the same time, she may be happy in Arzáns’ view (as well as in the reader’s perspective of today) because of her independent life as well as for challenging the patriarchal system. La sociedad exige la vida en pareja, como un ideal y como un momento de realización personal. Sin embargo, al mismo tiempo, la sociedad determina roles en hombres y mujeres tan diferentes que ese ideal, en la práctica, se torna difícil. Esta es la paradoja de la media naranja. Múltiples testimonios de hombres y mujeres de una comunidad académica demuestran el origen y la vivencia cotidiana de roles de género en diferentes espacios y momentos. El derecho no hace más que reflejar los dualismos y esta paradoja. En una sociedad patriarcal hombres y mujeres perdemos. Urge un cambio de valoración de los roles asignados para logar una sociedad más igualitaria, más justa y más solidaria.

No artigo discutimos os fundamentos ideológicos da dominação masculina sobre as mulheres na cultura grega antiga, separando os espaços de ação atribuídos a cada parte, como estabelecido por Xenofonte no Econômico. Para o homem foi concedida a visibilidade da vida pública, enquanto a mulher permaneceu na obscuridade da vida privada. A função da mulher era servir silenciosamente aos cuidados da casa.

In spite of the partial achievements reached by the feminist movement, the patriarchal system still in force in our societies leads to the conclusion that there is a serious pathology in our civilization and the causes of this pathology have not been eradicated yet. The suffering produced by the dominance imposed by the patriarchal system together with the injustice resulting from the inequality between men and women make it necessary to delve into a civilization pathology that has a basic vector in patriarchal reasoning. The philosophical tradition has not overcome this patriarchal bias. In philosophy, feminist thought represents an unavoidable appeal to rethink our humanity and obliges us to heed women's demand for justice. In this article, we investigate the construction of an imaginary of the childhood in the poetical works of Manuel Bandeira through an analysis of the poem "Evocação do Recife", written around 1925, and its presence in some of Bandeira's later poems like "Profundamente" and "Vou-me Embora pra Pasárgada", both compiled in the work Libertinagem, published in 1930. Here, we stress the relation between this "world of childhood" created by Bandeira and the freyrean imaginary of the patriarchalism, that is, the "world of our grandfathers" that Gilberto Freyre tried to recover in his writings for Diário de Pernambuco during the Brazilian 1920's. In the domestic sphere, gender violence rates are alarming and it is estimated that in Brazil, even after the institutionalization of the Bureau of Assistance to Women (1985) and Law 11.340/06 (Maria da Penha Law) in August 2006, cases of domestic violence especially against women showed no significant drop. This work aims to discuss gender violence from a cultural perspective (especially tackling the issue of machismo and patriarchy under which Brazilian society took root from colonial times), given the high rates of violent acts against women. The research presented here is divided into two stages: bibliographical discussion on the gender violence and, after that, an analysis of the latest data on gender violence produced by IPEA, Balance 2013, 2014, 2015 e 2016 - Dial 180 (Center for Assistance to Women), Institute Patrícia Galvão and SUS. A democratização da família brasileira, sobretudo no que diz respeito à paridade nas relações conjugais, está sustentada na isonomia consagrada na Constituição Federal de 1988, como fundamento supremo do Estado Democrático de Direito. No entanto, para que houvesse a igualdade dos cônjuges perante a lei, diversos fatores contribuíram para o declínio do modelo hegemônico. Fatores como a revolução industrial, o movimento feminista e a questão da sexualidade feminina cooperaram para o afastamento da concepção hierárquica e matrimonial da família. Assim, o objetivo do presente artigo é demonstrar ao leitor que o Direito das Famílias requer um estudo abrangente, não somente no seu aspecto jurídico como também deve ser analisado à luz de outras disciplinas, a exemplo da Sociologia. A pesquisa realizada é bibliográfica e teórica, com levantamento documental e o método utilizado é o dedutivo, com análise de obras relacionadas ao tema.

En este artículo nos interesa señalar, siguiendo las teorías del intercambio simbólico y de la seducción de Jean Baudrillard, que los intercambios en las sociedades primitivas responden a la lógica del don y el contra-don y el principio de reversibilidad, dando paso a un orden social en el cual sujeto y objeto establecen relaciones de seducción como alternativa a las relaciones de poder. Del mismo modo, nos interesa precisar que dichos intercambios ponen en circulación un objeto-símbolo único y singular encargado de sellar alianzas y servir de médium para transportar los poderes espirituales de la comunidad. Estas precisiones se realizan con el fin de poner en discusión las premisas de Carole Pateman y Luce Irigaray, quienes afirman que el intercambio de mujeres que se da en las comunidades primitivas muestra en germen a la mujer-objeto mercancía y la cultura patriarcalista. Lo que afirmamos es que en estos intercambios, la mujer adquiere el estatuto de mujer-símbolo encargada de mediar relaciones y sellar alianzas, noción que se encuentra distante de la categoría de un objeto-mercancía, sin que ella abandone plenamente la posición del sujeto.

O objetivo do presente estudo é discutir a educação feminina dentro da sociedade patriarcal brasileira. Neste modelo patriarcal, caberia aos homens dirigir os negócios, discutir e participar da política e desbravar os sertões incultos, enquanto as mulheres seriam educadas no seio da própria família, para ser uma esposa obediente e mãe dedicada. De uma educação sexista às escolas mistas foi um longo caminho. O tema é importante, pois se propõe a discutir a construção social dos gêneros ainda marcada pela discriminação e desigualdade de direitos entre homens e mulheres na atualidade. A partir de fontes bibliográficas, pretende-se discutir o percurso da educação das mulheres no Brasil e a diferença entre a educação destinada a meninos e meninas. Palavras-chave: Patriarcalismo. La pregunta por la psique y su relación con lo femenino se encuentra soterrada en la actualidad por una sociedad que privilegia el logos y la tecnología como maneras de hacer lecturas efectivas del mundo y los sujetos. Venus o Afrodita, según su versión griega o romana, plantea en su mito una posibilidad de reflexión profunda acerca de lo femenino en íntima conexión con el psiquismo y el ejercicio de la psicoterapia. El privilegio de lo masculino y sus expresiones sociales en la forma de razón, competitividad, guerra y consumismo, han velado a lo femenino con representaciones que lo proscriben y desvalorizan mediante figuras como Eva o Pandora, en tanto sus presentaciones. La revisión de la “Gran Diosa” antigua y la exaltación de lo femenino como fuerza creadora y transformadora, permiten entenderlo como algo que está más allá de su reducción a la condición de objeto y restituyen al mito su capacidad de comprensión del ser humano a la luz de la psicoterapia como actividad de creación y transformación, en relación con los temas que encarna la Diosa como las emociones, la sexualidad y el cuerpo. Su análisis otorgará interrogantes que podrán contribuir en las construcciones acerca del psiquismo y de las fuerzas que intervienen en su dinámica.

Este artigo analisa o conto Folha rota (1878), de Machado de Assis, levando-se em conta o processo de transformação do patriarcalismo, haja vista sua decadência no contexto de crescente urbanização durante o século XIX. Pautamo-nos na representação que a narrativa faz do cotidiano das personagens femininas para discutir as situações de violência vividas por mulheres livres e pobres envolvidas nas relações de poder inerentes àquela sociedade. Dessa forma, procuramos apontar tanto uma interpretação da obra literária como instrumento de crítica social quanto contribuir para a maior compreensão da obra deMachado de Assis, sobretudo de seus contos.This article analyzes the short story Folha rota (1878) by Machado de Assis, taking to account the transformation process of the patriarchy, bearing in mind it’s decadence within the increasing urbanization context through 19th century. From the representation of female characters and their everyday’s life in the narrative, we discuss the violence experienced by free and poor women involved in the inherent power relations in that society. In this perspective, we intend to indicate an interpretation of literary work as an important device of social criticism, as much as, to give a contribution to an accurate comprehension of Machado de Assis’s work, especially his short stories.
