The thesis introduces two distinct modes of applied historical analysis as outlined by John Tosh in his essay: In defence of applied history. Tosh outlined two oppositional historical arguments which he describes as processual and analogical. This thesis weaves these two seemingly distinct forms of applied history into a broader patchwork of historical analysis to reveal the patterns which emerge between moments of intense media scrutiny and government intervention to formal sex education from 1943-2020. Patchwork theor(ies) have been employed to describe the stitching together of parts of a fragmentary history into a cohesive pattern which enables a view of what is new, what is transient and what is enduring about the past as a means of enriching stakeholder knowledge and attending to the gaps in the historiography of formal sex education. This methodological approach responds to the complex relationship between formal sex education in the past and in the present. This has made an insight into contemporary practices a necessary starting point for the historical analysis which follows. A thematic analysis of current teacher interviews, RSE (2020), Mass Observer responses and newspaper reporting revealed a complex relationship between the teachers and the gendered construction of a sexual body. Teacher authority, pleasure and risk emerged as key themes which shaped how these teachers described their roles. These themes provide the threads from which a complex pattern of historical analysis concerned with the formal sex education of girls from 1943-2020. Part One of the thesis utilises an argument by analogy to argue that teacher authority declined from the period between 1943 to 1988. An analysis of policy documents, sex education literature, newspaper reporting, and teacher accounts revealed a tension between teacher autonomy and government accountability which is shown to complicate the relationship between the figure of the teacher and formal sex education. Part Two of the thesis builds from the first to argue by process to analyse the position of the sexual body within sex education teaching from 1943-2020. Adriene Rich's feminist theoretical distinction between 'the' body and 'my' body provides a means of articulating how 'the' sexual body emerges as a repertoire of changing bodily concepts over the period of study; while 'my' body provides a theoretical framework to examine the relationship between the presence of teacher, their body, and 'the' sexual body over the period of study.

PATCHWORK ,ETHNOLOGY ,FASHION ,COVID-19 pandemic ,CLOTHING & dress - Abstract
This article explores the innovative method of patchwork ethnography, which was first introduced by Günel, Varma and Watanabe in 2020, and its applicability to the area of fashion studies. It elaborates on the features, qualities and limitations of the method. The article does so by reflecting on the ethnographic research I conducted for my Ph.D. thesis. In March–August 2019 and January–July 2021, I used a patchwork ethnography approach to participant observation, interviews, digital ethnography and visual analysis to study the trade and retail of Chinese-made garments and textiles in Mozambique. The article puts a special focus on the difficulties and restrictions arising from the COVID-19 pandemic, and how these can be offset by the specific characteristics of patchwork ethnography. Apart from discussing the issues relating to my positionality and privilege as an educated white female researcher in a cross-cultural Global South context, it also hopes to further push the ongoing decolonization of fashion studies. It therefore aims to show that the applicability and relevance of patchwork ethnography go beyond periods shaped by pandemic restrictions. More generally, this article emphasizes the necessity and benefit of an interdisciplinary mindset and creative, flexible, multi-method approaches to understand and tackle the great challenges of our time that relate to the production, trade and consumption of fashion products. Water reuse, the beneficial use of highly treated municipal wastewater (reclaimed water), is expanding throughout the United States (U.S.); however, there are currently no federal reclaimed water use regulations, only guidelines. As a result, state policies on reclaimed water vary widely, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive understanding to facilitate coordinated national planning. Our systematic literature review, utilizing an online legal research database, presents an updated overview of U.S. reclaimed water policies from 2004 to 2023. A novel categorization scheme tracks policy changes, highlighting a 38% increase in states regulating reclaimed water between 2004 and 2023. We also created maps of current reclaimed water use regulations across the U.S. including: (1) a national overview of the reclaimed water policy landscape; and (2) documentation of non-food crop and food crop irrigation policies. As of November 2023, 74% of states (37/50) intentionally regulated reclaimed water use. Regions with historically low water scarcity, such as the Midwest, exhibited lower participation rates in reclaimed water regulation than water-scarce regions in the West. Of the 37 states regulating direct reclaimed water use in 2023, all allowed for at least some agricultural uses; 23 permitted non-food and food crop production use, while 14 states have statutory allowances for direct reclaimed water use on non-food crop production. As climate change stresses freshwater resources, our work provides up-to-date information for policymakers to navigate existing reclaimed water use policies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The textile industry is a supplier of clothing needs of modern society today. As a supplier of basic necessities, the textile industry is required to produce goods that are in accordance with market interests and trends circulating among the public, this rapidly developing trend that causes high waste generated by the textile industry. Waste can come from the textile industry on a small scale or on a large scale. The existence of the concept of fast fashion worsens the environment, because the concept of fast fashion changes trends quickly and in a short time, as well as the use of poor raw materials so that clothes are not durable. This has made a drastic increase in fabric waste, both the fabric waste comes from the production process of the textile industry, as well as the rest of production goods that are not sold and have changed trends. Observing trends that are circulating in the community with resets, making observations about the use of fabric waste in the textile industry with literature studies and making observations about bag craftsmen with surveys on several bag craftsmen. In addition, the exploration of techniques that must be carried out by that will determine the results of the study. The conclusion that can be drawn from this study is the Utilization of Fabric Waste into Bag Products Using Smocking Techniques can be realized. The final result of this research is a product. The product is made using patchwork waste and uses fabric manipulation techniques, can be applied well and has an aesthetic appearance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

fiber art ,diaspora ,patchwork ,natural fibers ,identity ,Hawaiʻi - Abstract
I find several compelling parallels between the human and plant realms, particularly in relation to place and identity. Refreshing insights, questions, and perspectives have arisen for me in my reflections on the history and ecosystems of Hawaiʻi, my own identity, and my work. I am interested in how we construct and deconstruct individual identities within the context of a larger society. As human beings, we shift, adapt, resist, or embrace the various influences within the social, cultural and natural ecosystems in which we live. We invent and reorganize ourselves continuously as we move through time and space. I associate this journey of finding and fitting the pieces of ourselves together with patchwork — articulating and finding meaning in the patterns, textures, and salvageable pieces of our identities. Like plants, we live in transformation. I use a variety of natural fibers in my work, including wool, silk, and wauke (Broussonetia papyrifera). While I honor traditions from the past (harvesting and beating bark and hand-felting wool are among the oldest of fiber craft forms), I also experiment with new methods as a way of expressing my own, authentic voice. My current work straddles the lines between craft and fine art, representation and abstraction, and conceptual vocabularies that merge artistic traditions related to my biological origins: African American patchwork quilting and Finnish felting with tapa (bark cloth) and artistic traditions from Hawaiʻi.

REMOTE-sensing images , *CENTRAL economic planning , *URBAN life , *CULTURAL landscapes , *HINTERLAND , *DESERTS - Abstract
Desert landscapes serve as a site for the dynamic interplay of competing historical and geopolitical narratives. In Kuwait, tribal, colonial, and global conflicts across the hinterland have mobilized state planning efforts, articulating a geospatial division between urban and desert life. Concurrently, visioning tools such as hand-drawn maps and satellite imagery have not only shaped the understanding of this desert, but have been shaped by it. Through an examination of the forces that have driven its transformation, this landscape is shown as both product and producer of cultural, social, and political complexity. The contemporary desert exists as a patchwork, the result of a disparate collection of essential narratives projected onto the territory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With increasingly severe environmental problems, energy saving and environmental protection have become two important issues to be solved in the automobile industry. Patchwork blank hot-stamping technology can be used to obtain light-weight and high-strength parts and is thus increasingly used in the manufacture of autobody parts. Because the main blank and the patched blank need to be connected through spot welding before forming, the welding spots' arrangement has a great influence on the formability of the part. In this study, a thermal–mechanical coupling finite element analysis model of A-pillar patchwork blanks was established. With the thickness of the patched blank, the distance between the welding spot and the external contour of the patched blank, and the number of welding spots as optimization variables, together with the maximum thinning rate and the maximum welding spot force as objectives, the influence of welding spot arrangement on forming quality was analyzed, and the welding spots' arrangement was optimized using a central composite design (CCD), the response surface method (RSM), and the genetic algorithm (GA). The results showed that when the initial welding spot was located close to the contour of the patched blank, the bending moment was greater when the weld spot passed through the die corner, leading to the rupture of the welding spot or its surrounding base material due to the greater thinning rate. When the patched blank was thicker than the main blank, the main blank cracked during the forming process due to a greater increase in the thinning rate. The optimal solution of the weld spot arrangement on the A-pillar patchwork blanks was a 1.2 mm thick main blank, 0.8 mm thick patched blank, a distance of 29 mm between the weld spot and the contour line of the patched blank, and 16 weld spots. Hot-stamping experiments were conducted using the optimized weld spots' arrangement, and high-quality parts were obtained. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A core comparative claim of the book is that the countries exhibit similar patterns of violence by district despite substantial social and political differences, which is explained by the patchworked governance arrangements. Adnan Naseemullah's new book, I Patchwork states i , aims to explain diverse subnational patterns of conflict and competition in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh as a function of different types of governance arrangements at the district level-the patchwork state-which have persisted from colonialism to post-independence. The British colonial administration, motivated and constrained by fear, greed, and frugality, created different "institutional solutions to specific challenges" (p. 247) to manage varied social demands and resistances. This article collectively discusses creative feminist approaches to ethnographic methods developed in response to challenging social, personal, environmental, and temporal conditions and pressures. Patchwork Ethnography, developed by Gökçe Günel, Saiba Varma and Chika Watanabe, recognises mundane pressures, and works with insights and experiences that emerge not only from doing research, but from what happens around the edges. By rendering the many 'seams' of research visible and valuable, their approach aims to develop creative, kind, and more generous – yet no less robust – research realities. Drawing inspiration from Patchwork Ethnography this article takes a creative approach to the craft of conversation, valuing the fragments, drawing attention to edges and intersections of our collective thinking, research, and experiences and stitching them together into a unique patchworked piece. Throughout, in the spirit of the theme of this special issue, we ask what kinds of ethnographic methods can create new and different futures? What are, or could be, feminist futures of ethnography? Embroidered rear skirt panels are the decorative embroidered horizontal strips at the centers of the rears of traditional skirts worn by Miao women residing in Huawu Village, located in the Qianxi County of Guizhou, China. The local traditional patchwork patterns on these panels demonstrate the craftsmanship of women's embroidery. Local single men choose their marriage partners according to the embroidery skills of single women on their panels. Because of the remote geography of Huawu, the techniques and patterns of the traditional embroidery in this village have not been investigated. In this study, a 2-week field survey was conducted in Huawu and Yunnan Academy of Social Sciences to examine the techniques of embroidered rear skirt panels and the meanings implied in these panels. The processes in which local women create the rear skirt panels using patchwork embroidery were photographed and recorded, and residents were interviewed to clarify their interpretations of the patterns on the panels. The results revealed that the panels in Huawu are created using the appliqué and reverse appliqué techniques, which are different from those in other ethnic minorities in China. Huawu Miao women use their unique embroidery techniques to illustrate twin-bird and bird–dragon patterns to convey procreation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

QUINOLINIC acid , *PICOLINIC acid , *FUMARATES , *PROMOTERS (Genetics) , *GENE clusters - Abstract
Quinolinic acid (QA), a natural pyridine derivative produced through the kynurenine pathway in living organisms, is linked to various neurodegenerative diseases due to its neurotoxicity. Although some bacteria have been reported to degrade QA, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain incomplete. In this study, a unique qut cluster responsible for QA degradation is identified in Pigmentiphaga sp. YJ18. The strain YJ18 could degrade and utilize QA as the sole carbon source for growth. Strain YJ18 efficiently degrade 100 mg/L QA within 48 h at 30 °C, pH 7.0, and 1% NaCl. The gene-disruption results showed that qutE is involved in the initial step of QA degradation, while qutI mediate the conversion of 6-hydroxypicolinic acid (6HPA) to downstream metabolites. Furthermore, the degradation of QA is negatively regulated by the MarR family transcriptional regulator QutR, which shared 61.97% amino similarity with PicR in Alcaligenes faecalis. The qut gene cluster consists of three transcriptional units: qutABCDEF , qutGHIJKLMNO , and qutR. Electrophoretic mobility shift assay results demonstrated that QutR binds to the promoter regions of the qutA , qutG , and qutR , respectively, sharing a partial palindromic motif 5′-TCAG-N4-CTNN-3'. Bioinformatics analysis reveals that the unique qut cluster, co-evolving with Pigmentiphaga strains, integrating the qui and pic clusters which are responsible for degradation of QA to 6HPA and picolinic acid to fumaric acid, respectively. Overall, this study provides a newly isolated strain capable of degrading QA with a unique qut cluster and valuable molecular insights into the diversity of QA catabolic mechanisms in bacteria. • An efficient quinolinic acid-degrading bacterium Pigmentiphaga sp. YJ18 was isolated. • A unique gene cluster qut responsible for quinolinic acid was identified in strain YJ18. • The transcription of qut cluster was negatively controlled by MarR-family transcriptional regulator QutR. • The qut cluster was co-evolved together with hosts. • Quinolinic acid degradation efficiency was enhanced by the patchwork cluster qut. WESTERN countries ,PATCHWORK - Abstract
We aimed to enrich the empirical picture and to better understand the nature of post-communist capitalism in the new EU member states in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE11). Our main research goal is to assess the degree of similarity of the institutional architectures in these countries toward each of the four models of capitalism in Western Europe distinguished by Bruno Amable (2003), represented in our research by one Western European country being the most typical empirical approximation of a particular 'ideal-typical' model. The study is based on the application of a new method designed for the purpose of our research, the coefficients of similarity. Our empirical exercise shows that the CEE11 countries exhibited on average the greatest relative similarity to the Mediterranean model of capitalism, represented by Spain and Italy. At the same time, they also displayed a considerable institutional proximity to the Continental model of capitalism, represented by Germany, and – to a lesser extent – to two remaining benchmarks. These findings may be generalized as the prevalence of a polycentric pattern of institutional similarity of the CEE11 economies to the established models of Western European capitalism which makes the emerging post-communist capitalism a distinct research category and adds to its patchwork nature. COOKBOOKS ,POINT processes ,ENGAGEMENT (Philosophy) ,PHYSICS ,PATCHWORK - Abstract
The recipes included in Jane Barker’s A Patch-Work Screen for the Ladies (1723) appear to be some of the most jarring and out-of-context inclusions in the narrative. This article explores the relationship between Barker’s novel and the form of the recipe collection in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries on both a material and an epistemological level. The entanglements between recipes and the patchwork screen not only point to the processes of constructing and conveying knowledge, but also to the materiality of these processes as Galesia and the Lady build the patchwork screen. Her focus on the materiality of knowledge reinforces Jane Barker’s deep engagement with natural philosophy, the natural world around her, as well as domestic practices when the characters sew literal pieces of paper with poems on cookery and natural philosophy into the patchwork screen. The material and structural influence of the recipe on Barker’s narrative constitutes an additional layer underneath the reigning metaphor of the patchwork screen and textiles in more general. Considering the recipe and recipe collections as underlying metaphors in addition to the patchwork increases the generically experimental character of the Patch-Work Screen. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• We describe the evolution of our hepatic vein outflow techniques and compare their advantages and posttransplant outcomes. • The cold ischemic time and operative time in the one-orifice venoplasty group were significantly shorter than those in the separate anastomosis group and the incidence of hepatic vein stenting in the separate anastomosis group was greater than that in the one-orifice venoplasty group. • Our new simplified one-orifice venoplasty technique could be an effective method for overcoming technical difficulties and the outflow disturbance during modified right lobe living donor liver transplantation without complex benchwork or vein patching. • Our method could improve graft function and patency rates of graft outflow during the early posttransplant period. Middle hepatic vein (MHV) reconstruction is often essential to avoid hepatic congestion and serious graft dysfunction in living donor liver transplantation (LDLT). This article introduces the evolution of our MHV reconstruction technique and the excellent outcomes of a new simplified one-orifice venoplasty. We compared clinical outcomes among 3 types of one-orifice techniques through a retrospective review of 378 recipients who underwent LDLT using a modified right lobe graft at our institution from January 2008 to December 2018; group I (n = 34) received separate outflow reconstruction, group II (n = 166) received the one-orifice technique to create a wider single outflow with patchwork, and group III (n = 178) received the more simplified one-orifice technique in which neo-MHV was reconstructed into the right hepatic vein without patch venoplasty. Patient demographic characteristics did not differ significantly among the 3 groups, but cold ischemic time and operative time in groups II and III were significantly shorter than those in group I. Moreover, the early patency rates of MHV in groups II and III were higher than those in group I. In particular, group I received an MHV or right hepatic vein stenting more frequently than group II or III during the early posttransplant period. In conclusion, this new simplified one-orifice technique could be an effective method to overcome technical difficulties and the outflow disturbance during right lobe LDLT without complex benchwork to create a large outflow. FOIL stamping , *SPOT welding , *PATCHWORK , *FINITE element method , *DAMAGE models - Abstract
Hot stamping patchwork blanks technology can flexibly adjust the mechanical properties by designing different thicknesses and profiles of the main blank and the patched blank. Due to the spot welding connection between the main blank and the patched blank, the material flow between them is uneven and crack defects easily occur. To investigate the influence of the forming parameters, especially welding spot arrangement, on the formability, a high-temperature welding spot failure damage model was established through high-temperature tensile shear and cross-tension experiments. Subsequently, the thermal–mechanical coupling finite element model (FEM) of A-pillar patchwork blanks in hot stamping process was established. The results indicated that the strength of the welding spots satisfied the forming requirements, and the forming defects were mainly caused by the excessive thinning of the base material around the local welding spots. By analyzing the causes of the cracking and then optimizing the welding spot arrangement, the thinning rate of the base material around the welding spot decreased from 33% to less than 12%. The thickness distribution of different sections was compared with the simulated and the experimental results and the error was less than 10%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
