INTRODUCTION: Non-consented care, a form of obstetric violence involving the lack of informed consent for procedures, is a common but little-understood phenomenon in the global public health arena. The aim of this secondary analysis was to measure the prevalence and assess change over time of non-consented care during childbirth in Mexico in 2016 and 2021, as well as to examine the association of sociodemographic, pregnancy-, and childbirth-factors with this type of violence. METHODS: We measured the prevalence of non-consented care and three of its variations, forced sterilization or contraception, forced cesarean section, and forced consent on paperwork, during childbirth in Mexico for 2016 (N = 24,036) and 2021 (N = 19,322) using data from Mexicos cross-sectional National Survey on the Dynamics of Household Relationships (ENDIREH). Weighted data were stratified by geographical regions. We performed adjusted logistic regression analyses to explore associations. RESULTS: The national prevalence of non-consented care and one of its variations, pressure to get a contraceptive method, increased from 2016 to 2021. A decrease in the prevalence was observed for forced contraception or sterilization without knowledge, forcing women to sign paperwork, and non-consented cesarean sections nationally and in most regions. Women between the ages of 26 and 35 years, married, cohabiting with partner, living in urban settings, who do not identify as Indigenous, and who received prenatal services or gave birth at the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) facilities experienced a higher prevalence of non-consented care. Being 26 years of age and older, living in a rural setting, experiencing stillbirths in the last five years, having a vaginal delivery, receiving prenatal services at IMSS, or delivering at a private facility were significantly associated with higher odds of reporting non-consented care. CONCLUSION: While a decrease in most of the variations of non-consented care was found, the overall prevalence of non-consented care and, in one of its variations, pressure to get contraceptives, increased at a national and regional level. Our findings suggest the need to enforce current laws and strengthen health systems, paying special attention to the geographical regions and populations that have experienced higher reported cases of this structural problem.

OBJECTIVE:  Severe maternal morbidity (SMM) is increasing and characterized by substantial racial and ethnic disparities. Analyzing trends and disparities across time by etiologic or organ system groups instead of an aggregated index may inform specific, actionable pathways to equitable care. We explored trends and racial and ethnic disparities in seven SMM categories at childbirth hospitalization. STUDY DESIGN:  We analyzed California birth cohort data on all live and stillbirths ≥ 20 weeks gestation from 1997 to 2017 (n = 10,580,096) using the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions SMM index. Cases were categorized into seven nonmutually exclusive indicator categories (cardiac, renal, respiratory, hemorrhage, sepsis, other obstetric, and other medical SMM). We compared prevalence and trends in SMM indicator categories overall and by racial and ethnic group using logistic and linear regression. RESULTS:  SMM occurred in 1.16% of births and nontransfusion SMM in 0.54%. Hemorrhage SMM occurred most frequently (27 per 10,000 births), followed by other obstetric (11), respiratory (7), and sepsis, cardiac, and renal SMM (5). Hemorrhage, renal, respiratory, and sepsis SMM increased over time for all racial and ethnic groups. The largest disparities were for Black individuals, including over 3-fold increased odds of other medical SMM. Renal and sepsis morbidity had the largest relative increases over time (717 and 544%). Sepsis and hemorrhage SMM had the largest absolute changes over time (17 per 10,000 increase). Disparities increased over time for respiratory SMM among Black, U.S.-born Hispanic, and non-U.S.-born Hispanic individuals and for sepsis SMM among Asian or Pacific Islander individuals. Disparities decreased over time for sepsis SMM among Black individuals yet remained substantial. CONCLUSION:  Our research further supports the critical need to address SMM and disparities as a significant public health priority in the United States and suggests that examining SMM subgroups may reveal helpful nuance for understanding trends, disparities, and potential needs for intervention. OBJECTIVE: There has been little evidence of the impact of preventive services during pregnancy covered under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) on birthing parent and infant outcomes. To address this gap, this study examines the association between Medicaid expansion under the ACA and birthing parent and infant outcomes of low-income pregnant people. METHODS: This study used individual-level data from the 2004-2017 annual waves of the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS). PRAMS is a surveillance project of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and health departments that annually includes a representative sample of 1,300 to 3,400 births per state, selected from birth certificates. Birthing parents outcomes of interest included timing of prenatal care, gestational diabetes, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, cigarette smoking during pregnancy, and postpartum care. Infant outcomes included initiation and duration of breastfeeding, preterm birth, and birth weight. The association between ACA Medicaid expansion and the birthing parent and infant outcomes were examined using difference-in-differences estimation. RESULTS: There was no association between Medicaid expansion and the outcomes examined after correcting for multiple testing. This finding was robust to several sensitivity analyses. CONCLUSIONS FOR PRACTICE: Study findings suggest that expanded access to more complete insurance benefits with limited cost-sharing for pregnant people, a group that already had high rates of insurance coverage, did not impact the birthing parents and infant health outcomes examined.

BACKGROUND: Women in South Asia often return to their natal home during pregnancy, for childbirth, and stay through the postpartum period-potentially impacting access to health care and health outcomes in this important period. However, this phenomenon is understudied (and not even named) in the demographic or health literature, nor do we know how it impacts health. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to measure the magnitude, timing, duration, risk factors and impact on care of this phenomenon, which we name Temporary Childbirth Migration. METHODS: Using data from 9,033 pregnant and postpartum women collected in 2019 in two large states of India (Madhya Pradesh and Bihar) we achieve these aims using descriptive statistics and logistic regression models, combined with qualitative data from community health workers about this practice. RESULTS: We find that about one third of women return to their natal home at some point in pregnancy or postpartum, mostly clustered close to the time of delivery. Younger, primiparous, and non-Hindu women were more likely to return to their natal home. Women reported that they went to their natal home because they believed that they would receive better care; this was born out by our analysis in Bihar, but not Madhya Pradesh, for prenatal care. CONCLUSIONS: Temporary childbirth migration is common, and, contrary to expectations, did not lead to disruptions in care, but rather led to more access to care. CONTRIBUTION: We describe a hitherto un-named, underexplored yet common phenomenon that has implications for health care use and potentially health outcomes.

Many mammals can temporally uncouple conception from parturition by pacing down their development around the blastocyst stage. In mice, this dormant state is achieved by decreasing the activity of the growth-regulating mTOR signaling pathway. It is unknown whether this ability is conserved in mammals in general and in humans in particular. Here, we show that decreasing the activity of the mTOR signaling pathway induces human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) and blastoids to enter a dormant state with limited proliferation, developmental progression, and capacity to attach to endometrial cells. These in vitro assays show that, similar to other species, the ability to enter dormancy is active in human cells around the blastocyst stage and is reversible at both functional and molecular levels. Aim Background Method Results Implications for nursing/midwifery and health policy To determine the experiences of nurses and midwives providing perinatal care in an earthquake area.On February 6, 2023, two earthquakes measuring 7.8 and 7.6 magnitudes struck Turkey, affecting a large area. It is crucial for perinatal care to be rapidly organized, provided under the most suitable conditions, and delivered by qualified health professionals. Understanding the post‐disaster experiences of nurses and midwives is crucial to addressing this issue.This is a qualitative study using phenomenological methodology with 8 nurses and 12 midwives in the earthquake‐affected area. Personal information and semistructured interview forms were used for data collection. Content analysis was used for data analysis.Participants had a mean age of 33.75 years. The experiences of nurses and midwives were grouped into five themes: emotions experienced, challenges encountered, problems in perinatal services, coping mechanisms, and recommendations. The emotions experienced theme encompasses both positive and negative emotions. The challenges encountered theme includes challenging environmental conditions, organizational issues, problems with medical supplies and drugs, and being a victim of the earthquake. The problems in perinatal services theme includes pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum services. The coping mechanism's theme encompasses problem‐focused and emotion‐focused coping strategies. The recommendations theme includes education and awareness, preparedness for disasters, and sustainable services.Nurses and midwives working in the earthquake‐affected area experienced numerous physical and psychological challenges and encountered difficulties in delivering health services. A disaster education course including simulated disaster drills and practice can be integrated into the education system. The lifetime production of dairy cows is a complex trait influenced not only by genetics but also by the environment in which a cow lives and the management practices of the farmer. Moreover, these influential factors show complex interactions with each other, making it difficult to reliably predict the lifetime production of individual animals at birth. However, because well-managed dairy farms often have a surplus of youngstock, reliable lifetime production predictions would offer the opportunity to make more substantiated decisions when selecting calves or heifers to sell. Therefore, using data from Dutch herds, we constructed a dataset capturing information on genetics, environment, and management practices to develop multiple machine learning models capable of predicting the lifetime production of dairy cattle soon after birth. We found that a coupling of trends observed at the country level with farm-specific models largely outperforms off-the-shelf approaches. At birth, our best model could explain up to 47% of the variance in lifetime production, a considerable improvement compared with linear regression on the breeding values supplemented with the average lifetime production at farm level, which could explain only 21.7% of the variance in lifetime production. Moreover, we demonstrated that surplus youngstock selection according to our model could more than double the surplus animal selection effect compared with the benchmark methodology, offering opportunities to significantly increase the average (future) potential lifetime production of the retained heifers. Assuming a static 20% surplus liveborn heifer scenario and random surplus animal selection as the default, our best model for surplus animal selection resulted in a 9.4% greater lifetime production in the retained animals compared with the current Dutch average lifetime production. Background/Objectives: Childbirth is a profoundly personal experience that often does not align with expectations. The World Health Organization has established guidelines for best practises; in this sense, it is crucial to understand the childbirth experiences of Portuguese women in comparison with these guidelines. Methods: A quantitative, descriptive, correlational, and cross-sectional study was conducted to achieve this. In total, 615 women completed a sociodemographic questionnaire and the Labour and Childbirth Experience questionnaire, which comprised 39 statements based on the WHO's recommendations. Additionally, the study utilized the Life Satisfaction Scale and gathered insights into participants' overall perception of care during this phase. Results: The results were categorized as follows: (1) practises influencing the labour experience; (2) practises influencing the experience of vaginal birth; (3) practises affecting the experience of caesarean birth; and (4) emotional experience during labour and birth. Conclusions: Notably, the study found that practises discouraged by the WHO are still prevalent, potentially enabling obstetric violence. The mechanism that synchronizes the timing of parturition remains a mystery. Each mammalian species has a specific duration of gestation that is determined by integrated interactions among the mother, placenta, and fetus. Senescence is primarily driven by DNA damage and is one of the critical factors influencing both parturition and lifespan. In this study, we investigated senescence as a physiological process during pregnancy and observed a gradual physiological increase in senescence in the maternal decidua and placental cells with gestation. This increase in senescence was associated with a gradual physiological increase in DNA damage during gestation. An analysis of the AnAge dataset revealed a positive correlation between the gestation period and maximum lifespan across 740 mammalian species. This finding supports the hypothesis that the rates of DNA damage and senescence may impact both the gestation period and lifespan. We suggest that the relationship between gestation period and lifespan in mammals is mediated by species-specific rates of DNA damage and senescence, necessitating further explorations into their causal roles. Many large‐herbivore populations are regulated at least in part by bottom‐up forces, and thus relationships between herbivores and their habitat are of fundamental importance to wildlife managers. Variation in nutritional resources—and how herbivores respond to that variation—influences rates of nutrient intake, which directly affect nutritional condition, pregnancy rates, timing of parturition, offspring birth mass, and survival. Accordingly, nutrition‐focused research holds great potential for uncovering the mechanisms that govern population performance of large herbivores and for assessing the nature and magnitude of bottom‐up limitations. We quantified relationships between the foodscape (i.e., spatiotemporal variation in forage quality and abundance) in southwestern Oregon, USA, and black‐tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus) behavior and performance, with a focus on the influence of maternal nutrition on fawn survival. We hypothesized that black‐tailed deer performance (i.e., fawn birth mass and survival) is influenced by the availability of high‐quality forage during spring and summer and patterns of foodscape use exhibited by individual deer. From 2016–2023 we monitored movement and survival of adult female black‐tailed deer and their offspring. We also conducted intensive vegetation sampling and used generalized additive modeling to map the foodscape available to deer in spring and summer. Suitable forage biomass (i.e., maximum biomass of forage that together exceeded quality thresholds for supporting one fawn) was highly variable across space and time, and our top foodscape model explained 70% of the variation in suitable biomass (adjusted R2 = 0.70). We observed a strong, positive relationship between use of the foodscape by maternal females prior to parturition and fawn birth mass. Although maternal foodscape use after parturition did not influence the probability of fawn survival, survival increased with increasing birth mass. These results suggest that the effects of nutrition on fawn survival in our study system are indirectly mediated by maternal behavior (i.e., use of the foodscape) and the corresponding effects on birth mass of fawns. Our study adds to a growing body of literature supporting a fundamental link between foodscape use and population performance of large herbivores. Wildlife managers can use the dynamic models we developed to assess habitat quality and to make quantitative predictions about how different management actions (e.g., forest thinning) are likely to influence habitat quality and performance of black‐tailed deer. Monitoring equine parturition effectively is essential for preemptive intervention in periparturient issues and ensuring the overall well-being of both mares and foals. However, its implementation in breeding farms is challenging due to variable gestational lengths and nocturnal births. Predictive techniques have the potential to streamline the monitoring process, reduce labor intensity, and minimize costs. Research on foaling prediction in mares carrying mule or equine clone fetuses is scarce. Therefore, this study aimed to comparatively analyze foaling prediction parameters in mares pregnant with mule, equine, or equine clone fetus. The study included vulvar relaxation, sacroiliac ligament tension, pH, BRIX index, and concentrations of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, and potassium in prepartum mammary secretions. Sixty pregnant mares were used for this study and grouped as follows: 25 mares with mule fetuses (MF), 20 with equine clone fetuses (CF), and 15 with equine control fetuses (EF). Results showed significant differences in vulvar relaxation and sacroiliac ligament tension only in MF group (p < 0.05) on the day of parturition compared to the other days evaluated, different from the other groups. Levels of pH notably decreased on parturition day (mean 5.7 ± 0.04, p < 0.0001), with lower values in MF (6.05 ± 0.02) and CF (6.08 ± 0.04) compared to EF (6.26 ± 0.04) (p < 0.03). The BRIX index showed variation across mares and was not a good parameter for foaling prediction. Electrolytes correlated positively with impending parturition, showing no significant differences among groups. The MF and CF groups exhibited a substantial increase (102.13 % and 110.66 %, respectively) in mean calcium concentrations on the day before foaling, unlike EF (38.29 %). In conclusion, the pH values were different in mammary secretions between mares carrying mule and clone fetuses, in contrast to equine control fetuses. Nevertheless, there was a trend of decreasing pH values closer to parturition in all groups. Conversely, the BRIX index serves as a valuable indicator of colostrum quality yet does not offer insights into the proximity of parturition. Background: Parturition is an inflammation process. Exaggerated inflammatory reactions in infection lead to preterm birth. Although nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) has been recognized as a classical transcription factor mediating inflammatory reactions, those mediated by NF-κB per se are relatively short-lived. Therefore, there may be other transcription factors involved to sustain NF-κB-initiated inflammatory reactions in gestational tissues in infection-induced preterm birth. Methods: Cebpd-deficient mice were generated to investigate the role of CCAAT enhancer-binding protein δ (C/EBPδ) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced preterm birth, and the contribution of fetal and maternal C/EBPδ was further dissected by transferring Cebpd−/− or WT embryos to Cebpd−/− or WT dams. The effects of C/EBPδ pertinent to parturition were investigated in mouse and human myometrial and amnion cells. The interplay between C/EBPδ and NF-κB was examined in cultured human amnion fibroblasts. Results: The mouse study showed that LPS-induced preterm birth was delayed by Cebpd deficiency in either the fetus or the dam, with further delay being observed in conceptions where both the dam and the fetus were deficient in Cebpd. Mouse and human studies showed that the abundance of C/EBPδ was significantly increased in the myometrium and fetal membranes in infection-induced preterm birth. Furthermore, C/EBPδ participated in LPS-induced upregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines as well as genes pertinent to myometrial contractility and fetal membrane activation in the myometrium and amnion respectively. A mechanistic study in human amnion fibroblasts showed that C/EBPδ, upon induction by NF-κB, could serve as a supplementary transcription factor to NF-κB to sustain the expression of genes pertinent to parturition. Conclusions: C/EBPδ is a transcription factor to sustain the expression of gene initiated by NF-κB in the myometrium and fetal membranes in infection-induced preterm birth. Bats inhabiting northern latitudes are faced with short reproductive seasons during which they must produce and rear pups before fattening up in time to survive the winter hibernation. Therefore, the timing of parturition has considerable impacts on future fitness prospects for the mother and pup. However, little is known about individual variation in breeding phenology and its consequences for postnatal development within bat populations. Here, we studied the phenology of breeding in Eptesicus nilssonii across 7 years using data collected by day‐to‐day monitoring of a breeding colony in Norway (60.1° N) for which the identity and age of each mother (N = 8) and pup (N = 28) were known. Using mixed‐effect models, we found that arrival at the colony was influenced by temperature conditions from mid‐April to mid‐May across all females, but that there were strong and consistent individual differences in arrival‐ and parturition time across years. Females generally arrived ~32.1 days before giving birth, but the gestation duration was reduced if females arrived late and prolonged if females left the colony when faced with cold weather conditions. Pups born later in the season were born smaller but had higher growth rates during the most rapid growth period (<10 days old). The within‐individual effects suggest that the higher growth rates could be due to mothers compensating (e.g. through increased food intake) for late parturition rather than by improved food availability. Date of parturition did not influence adult body size in pups. Pups became volant at the earliest only 13.1 days after birth and approached adult flight patterns during their first flight week. Our results suggest that E. nilssonii is highly adapted to a short breeding season by producing large, fast developing and early volant pups, despite the environmental pressures bats face at northern latitudes. Simple Summary: Animal births, much like human births, can encounter complications that threaten the well-being of both the mother and the offspring. While monitoring the birth process is essential for ensuring proper care, human supervision can be costly. Commercial systems do exist for large animals, but there are currently no comparable solutions for small ruminants, despite various research efforts. This study explores the application of inertial sensors to detect parturition in small ruminants. This study also highlights which factors most significantly influence the outcomes of each investigation and summarizes the main results regarding birth detection. The review shows that different approaches focus on recognizing particular animal behaviors and designing detection algorithms. Although none of the studies presented a completely reliable detection method, most produced encouraging results, indicating noticeable behavioral changes in the hours preceding birth. The birth process in animals, much like in humans, can encounter complications that pose significant risks to both offspring and mothers. Monitoring these events can provide essential nursing support, but human monitoring is expensive. Although there are commercial monitoring systems for large ruminants, there are no effective solutions for small ruminants, despite various attempts documented in the literature. Inertial sensors are very convenient given their low cost, low impact on animal life, and their flexibility for monitoring animal behavior. This study offers a systematic review of the literature on detecting parturition in small ruminants using inertial sensors. The review analyzed the specifics of published research, including data management and monitoring processes, behaviors indicative of parturition, processing techniques, detection algorithms, and the main results achieved in each study. The results indicated that some methods for detecting birth concentrate on classifying unique animal behaviors, employing diverse processing techniques, and developing detection algorithms. Furthermore, this study emphasized that employing techniques that include analyzing animal activity peaks, specifically recurrent lying down and getting up occurrences, could result in improved detection precision. Although none of the studies provided a completely valid detection algorithm, most results were promising, showing significant behavioral changes in the hours preceding delivery. Simple Summary: Calf health is a critical consideration for animal welfare and farm profitability. Diarrhea and pneumonia are the two most common diseases threatening calf health. In addition to diseases, birth traits have been recognized by farms in recent years as important indicators of calf health and welfare. Given this, currently people are not only concerned about the health status of calves, but increasingly focused on the birth traits of calves derived from a reproductive perspective, including gestation length, calf weight at birth, and calving ease score. The period of calf growth and development spans from birth to six months of age. We believe that the birth traits of calves should be correlated to some extent with their health status during this growth and development period. This study assessed the correlation between calf birth traits and their disease manifestations during the growth and development period. We have found that the length of pregnancy in the dam and the season of calf birth may influence the duration of treatment for calf diarrhea and pneumonia. Additionally, we believe that calves born in winter may require increased care or higher medication dosages after illness onset. Moreover, an ideal gestation period for cows may be between 278 and 282 days, which could potentially result in lower rates of pneumonia occurrence in calves or shorter treatment durations for pneumonia. The objective of this study was to explore the relationship between calf birth traits and their susceptibility to diseases before reaching adulthood. A total of 5253 birth traits of Chinese Holstein calves were examined, including gestation length (GL), calf weight at birth (CW), and calving ease score (CES), which ranges from 1 (easy) to 5 (very difficult). Furthermore, monthly medical records were scrutinized for pneumonia and diarrhea in these calves. The study assessed five aspects of disease manifestation in calves: age at first onset, frequency of illness, longest duration of treatment, and total duration of treatment. The link between age at onset and disease manifestation prior to adulthood was analyzed using general linear models and regression models. The GL of calves significantly correlated with the risk of pneumonia, with the risk decreasing as the GL increases. A higher CES was associated with a later onset of diarrhea in calves. Furthermore, the CES was significantly negatively correlated with the duration of diarrhea treatment in calves. These results suggest that implementing different preventive measures for calves with different birth traits and modifying treatment protocols for affected calves could enhance the productivity of dairy cows and reduce losses on farms. Context: In Australia, approximately 53% of lamb deaths are caused by dystocia. One of the main welfare concerns in the sheep industry is under- and overfeeding ewes, which may be contributing to cases of dystocia. Aims: This pilot study aimed to investigate how increasing energy intake affects the duration of parturition and predictors of lamb survival. Methods: On Day 100 of gestation (dG), 20 twin-bearing and 10 singleton Merino ewes were selected and allocated to three treatment groups; (1) singleton ewes fed at 1.0× maintenance levels (n = 10); (2) twin-bearing ewes fed at 1.0× maintenance levels (n = 10) or (3) twin-bearing ewes fed at 1.25× maintenance (n = 10). Ewes were housed indoors in individual pens. Urine and blood were sampled from ewes on dG 130, 140, then daily from dG 145 through to parturition, and blood was sampled at the onset of parturition and 30 min post-partum. Urine was analysed for pH and blood was analysed for metabolic parameters, mineral concentration and acid–base balance. Predictors of lamb survival from birth to 24 h consisted of weight, rectal temperature, blood glucose and lactate, and body morphology. Key results: Serum calcium in late gestation and blood base excess pre-parturition were higher in Singletons 1M compared with Twins 1M (P < 0.05). The Twins 1.25M group took longer to give birth to the first-born lamb (104.4 ± 21.1 min) compared with the Twins 1M group (44.1 ± 6.6 min; P = 0.015). There were no differences in the predictors of lamb survival measures between the twin-bearing groups (P > 0.05). Conclusions: Ewes from the Twins 1.25M group took significantly longer to give birth to the first-born lamb. There were no other significant findings between the twin-bearing groups, including lamb liveweight, however, lambs born to ewes from the Twins 1.25 group were numerically heavier, which may explain the increase in parturition length. Implications: Feeding ewes above maintenance did not provide any production benefits to metabolic health or any other physiological parameters. Producers should avoid overfeeding ewes during late gestation. Around half of lamb deaths in Australia are caused by long/difficult births and the diet of the ewe in late pregnancy might be contributing to this. We tested this by comparing diets with different energy levels in twin-bearing ewes. We found that increasing the energy levels of the diet by 25% increased the duration of time for ewes to give birth to the first-born lamb. Reproductive phenology is a critical element of how animals persist in their environment and affects survival of young, especially in seasonal environments. We investigated the correlation between fetal eye diameter and birth timing to determine if birthdates could be predicted by a prenatal metric. We used ultrasonography to measure eye diameters of fetuses and vaginal implant transmitters to determine birthdates of Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep (Ovis canadensis canadensis) in Wyoming, United States, from 2019 to 2023. Fetal eye diameter strongly predicted days until birth (β = −2.8; pseudo- R 2 = 0.88). Effective prediction of birthdates via ultrasonography can yield opportunities for logistical planning in neonatal studies, monitoring changes in reproductive phenology, and evaluating questions of resource allocation relative to reproductive processes. Simple Summary: Retained fetal membranes (RFM) are a common reproductive issue in cattle, affecting overall health and reproductive efficiency. This study examined oxidative stress (OS) and fatty acid profiles in Romanian Spotted cows, comparing those with normal calving to cows with RFM. Serum samples were collected from 22 cows over a 9-week period surrounding calving to measure key OS markers, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), malondialdehyde (MDA), and total antioxidant capacity (TAC). Placental tissues were also analyzed for OS markers and fatty acid composition. The results showed significant changes in OS before and after birth, with cows experiencing RFM exhibiting lower antioxidant activity and higher lipid damage. Additionally, RFM cows had higher saturated fatty acid levels in the placenta, indicating metabolic stress. These findings highlight the role of OS and fatty acid imbalances in RFM, suggesting potential ways to improve dairy cow health by addressing these factors. Total antioxidant capacity (TAC) peaked during parturition in RFM cows (p < 0.0001, 38.780 ± 3.727 vs. 11.150 ± 1.555), signaling heightened stress. Additionally, MDA levels increased before parturition (p < 0.001, RFM 8.424 ± 1.894 vs. NP 3.807 ± 0.484), confirming lipid peroxidation. RFM cows also exhibited higher levels of saturated fatty acids and lower monounsaturated fatty acids, pointing to metabolic stress. Cownose rays (Rhinoptera bonasus) are schooling rays commonly displayed in large groups in public aquariums. They are long-lived, have an annual reproductive cycle, and readily breed in managed care with most pregnancies culminating with the unaided and successful birth of a single neonate. Occasionally, females are observed to have prolonged pregnancies or suffer dystocia during parturition and intervention via a cesarian section (C-section) is required to deliver the neonate. Monthly reproductive monitoring at Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies using ultrasound to stage pregnancies allows for the prediction of anticipated due dates and guides the decision to assist with delivery. Recognizing when to assist birth and best practices for performing C-section are important for the reproductive health, sustainability, and longevity of this species in managed care. Simple Summary: We studied the survival of young Indian leopard cubs in the Jhalana Reserve Forest, India, during their first two years of life. Using data from trail cameras collected over four years (2018–2021), we calculated survival rates with a statistical method to identify when cubs are most at risk. All adults and cubs included in this study were identified at the individual level based on the rosette patterns on their flanks and their facial markings. We found that during the first year, the survival rate of the cubs was about 74%, indicating that this period is particularly challenging for their survival. In the second year, the survival rate improved to around 83%, showing that the cubs are more likely to survive as they grow older. Overall, 61% of the cubs survived in our population to become independent after two years of parental care. These findings are important for creating effective conservation strategies to protect leopard cubs in fragmented habitats. We investigated the survival of cubs in a wild Indian leopard (Panthera pardus fusca) population in the Jhalana Reserve Forest (JRF), India. The research focuses on analyzing the survival of leopard cubs during their first two years of life. Survival functions were estimated using the Kaplan–Meier method based on data collected with trail cameras over four years from 2018 to 2021. We found that the mean survival probability of cubs during the first year of life was 0.739, indicating that this period is particularly challenging for their survival. In the second year, the survival probability increased to 0.831, reflecting an improvement in survival as the cubs grew older. The combined survival rate over the two-year period, calculated as the product of the first- and second-year survival rates, was 0.618. Simple Summary: Sow parturition, the process of giving birth to piglets, is a highly stressful process, with outcomes affecting farm economics as well as sow and piglet welfare. Protocols that assist with the identification of abnormal parturition are required for optimal production outcomes. The eye is an easily accessible and anatomically consistent body region, often used to aid medical diagnoses. A novel three-level ocular scoring system was devised and used to investigate the relationship between changes in ocular appearance and farrowing kinetics. It was determined that ocular appearance scoring can be used at farrowing to aid identification of sows experiencing an abnormal parturition, as changes are associated with increased straining and extended farrowing durations. This is a first step in developing a scale that may aid in predicting an extended parturition (>300 min), identifying sows that require assistance and so aiding staff management, sow welfare, and piglet survival. Protocols that enable prompt identification of sows in need of assistance during farrowing are important for optimal production outcomes. Change in the colour and appearance of the sclera of the eye can indicate increased stress. This warrants investigation into its use for the identification of sows in need of assistance at the time of parturition. To this end, a three-level ocular scoring system for the pig was devised and subsequently used in a preliminary investigation into the relationship between farrowing kinetics and visual changes in the sclera at farrowing. Data were collected and analysed from twenty randomly selected Large White × Landrace crossbred sows during farrowing. It was determined that sows with a severe ocular score were more likely to experience a prolonged farrowing duration (p = 0.013) and incur increased parturient straining of either total straining time (p = 0.011) or straining per piglet (p = 0.025). There was a significant association between ocular score and litter size (p = 0.043). Ocular score was not associated with sow parity (p = 0.728) and inter-piglet interval (p = 0.075). The proposed three-level scoring system successfully identified sows experiencing an abnormal parturition as defined by a prolonged farrowing duration and increased straining time. Findings from this study suggest the potential application of this simple ocular scoring tool for identifying sows experiencing an abnormal farrowing via in-person application or integration into remote monitoring systems in the future. Fetal age in Quarter Horses can be predicted within 2 weeks from 100- to 200- days of gestation using femur length, biparietal diameter (cranium diameter) and eye approximated volume. However, as pregnancy advances, the femur and cranium become too large to be imaged in their entirety using ultrasound and the corresponding biometric parameters can no longer be measured. In this longitudinal study, the proximal phalanx (P1) was evaluated as a novel biometric parameter for late gestation to predict fetal age and bone maturation. Transrectal ultrasound was performed in ten pregnant mares with known ovulation dates, every two weeks from 240- days of gestation until parturition. P1 was imaged in 69 % of the examinations. Inability to image P1 was due to obstructive positioning such as carpal or fetlock flexion, or posterior presentation of the fetus. Advancing fetal age did not affect visibility of P1. P1 length correlated significantly with days of gestation and a correlation equation was established: y = 0.3837x -69.55 where y is the predicted value of P1 length and x is the day of gestation (with day 0 being the day of ovulation). When P1 length was equal to or larger than the width of the ultrasound image (52.5 mm), 90 % of mares (9/10) were above 300- days of gestation. Ossification of the proximal and distal epiphysis of P1 typically appeared between 277- and 303 -days of gestation (mean: 288 days). The proximal epiphysis did not close before parturition whereas the distal one closed between 306- and 333-days of gestation (mean: 320 days). P1 epiphyseal appearance and closure occurred chronologically reflecting bone maturation. Radiographic findings at birth and prenatal ultrasound findings were in agreement, apart from timing of P1 distal epiphyseal closure. In conclusion, P1 length can be used as a new fetal biometric parameter to assess fetal age and growth after 240- days of gestation. The knowledge of P1 bone maturation process in utero as a marker for fetal bone development, may also be valuable in clinical decision-making when considering inducing parturition in the mare. Phenological advances are a widespread response to global warming and can contribute to determine the climate vulnerability of organisms, particularly in ectothermic species, which are highly dependent on ambient temperatures to complete their life cycle. Yet, the relative contribution of breeding dates and temperature conditions during gestation on fitness of females and their offspring is poorly documented in reptiles. Here, we exposed females of the common lizard Zootoca vivipara to contrasting thermal scenarios (cold vs. hot treatment) during gestation and quantified effects of parturition dates and thermal treatment on life-history traits of females and their offspring for 1 year. Overall, our results suggest that parturition date has a greater impact than thermal conditions during gestation on life history strategies. In particular, we found positive effects of an earlier parturition date on juvenile survival, growth, and recruitment suggesting that environmental-dependent selection and/or differences in parental quality between early and late breeders underlie seasonal changes in offspring fitness. Yet, an earlier parturition date compromised the energetic condition of gravid females, which suggests the existence of a mother–offspring conflict regarding the optimization of parturition dates. While numerous studies focused on the direct effects of alterations in incubation temperatures on reptile life-history traits, our results highlight the importance of considering the role of breeding phenology in assessing the short- and long-term effects of thermal developmental plasticity. Simple Summary: Mammary gland secretions (MGS), electrolytes, and pH are used to detect impending parturition in mares. Questions remain about whether all mares present sodium potassium inversion at labor. This study demonstrated that all mares had sodium potassium inversion and acidic pH at the time of parturition. Milk pH is neutral in the first seven days postpartum; the clinical significance of this remains to be determined. The pH of MGS can be measured with minimal variation stored at three different temperatures, except when the pH is ~7.5, which went up to ~8 immediately after the storage; however, the clinical significance of this variation can likely be negligible. This present study is the first to address these two physiological and practical questions about the pH of MGS in periparturient mares. The objectives of this study were (i) to determine pH and electrolyte concentrations in MGS collected prepartum and at parturition, (ii) to characterize mare milk pH during the first week postpartum, and (iii) to evaluate pre-foaling MGS pH at three storage temperatures. This study outlined two hypotheses: (i) all mares exhibit acidic pH, increased calcium, magnesium, and potassium, and reduced sodium concentrations regardless of prepartum pH and electrolytes; (ii) pre-foaling MGS pH varies with storage temperature and time in an initial value-dependent manner. Twenty-three multiparous mares were monitored daily from 320 days of gestation until parturition. Pre-foaling MGS was collected, and pH was immediately measured using a hand-held pH meter. Aliquots were preserved for further electrolyte analysis. Postpartum, samples from day −7 to 0 (day of foaling) were thawed, and electrolyte concentrations (calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium) were determined. For the three storage temperatures, pH was measured at 0, 15, 30, 45, and 60 min after storage, and hourly for 10 h post-collection. A range of pH 8 to 6.5 was included to avoid bias towards a specific pH value. The chosen pH groups were 8 (range 7.8–8.2), 7.5 (range 7.3–7.7), 7 (6.7–7.2), and 6.5 (6.2–6.6). Overall, storage temperature affects pH (p < 0.05). In conclusion, this study demonstrated that the majority of the mares had sodium–potassium inversion and acidic pH at foaling. Milk pH is neutral up to four days after foaling, becoming slightly alkaline afterwards, with undetermined clinical significance. The pH of MGS showed minimal variation across storage temperatures, except for pH ~7.5, which increased to ~8 post-storage. Simple Summary: This study evaluated the effects of adding the probiotic Bacillus (B.) subtilis to the feed of preweaning neonatal calves. Fifty Holstein calves from the same farm were split into two groups: a control group (CG) fed milk replacer and a treatment group (TG) receiving milk replacer plus 7.5 mL/calf/day of B. subtilis. The study began 24 h after birth, with calves' health monitored daily. Significant differences in body weight were observed between the CG and the TG at 30, 60, and 90 days of age. The TG had a higher average body weight at each time point. At 30 days, the TG also showed lower AST activity and higher GGT activity compared to the CG. Phosphorus levels were higher in the TG, while total protein concentrations were lower at both 30 and 60 days. The inclusion of B. subtilis in the calves' diet led to improved growth and a better metabolic profile, suggesting its potential as a beneficial feed additive in dairy farming. This study focused on assessing whether the inclusion of probiotics (B. subtilis) as feed additives during the preweaning stage can enhance the body weight and metabolic condition of neonatal calves. A total of 50 Holstein calves, all born on the same farm, were randomly divided into two homogeneous treatment groups after birth. The calves in the control group (CG) were fed a milk replacer (n = 25) (13 females and 12 males) and those in the B. subtilis-supplement-treated group (TG), (n = 25) (13 females and 12 males) were fed a milk replacer with 7.5 mL/calf/day of B. subtilis probiotic (complied with the manufacturer's guidelines). The probiotic was administered 24 h post-birth, signifying the start of the experimental period. It took one month to collect the animals. Body weight was measured at birth for all animals. A local veterinarian, working on the farm, conducted daily health checks of the calves, recording health parameters and any antibiotic treatments. Blood samples were collected from each calf at birth and 30, 60, and 90 days by puncturing the jugular vein using 10 mL evacuated serum tubes before morning feeding. Significant differences in body weight were observed between the CG and the TG at 30, 60, and 90 days of age. At 30 days, the TG had a 4.11% higher average body weight than the CG (54.38 kg vs. 52.71 kg). At 60 days, the TG's average weight was 3.75% higher (79.21 kg vs. 76.34 kg), and at 90 days, the TG had a 2.91% higher average weight (112.87 kg vs. 109.67 kg). At 30 days of age, the TG showed significantly lower AST activity, with a 41.12% decrease compared to the CG (51.02 IU/L vs. 72.00 IU/L). Conversely, GGT activity was significantly higher in the TG by 64.68% (40.64 IU/L vs. 14.35 IU/L). Phosphorus concentration at 30 days was also significantly higher in the TG by 9.36% (3.27 mmol/L vs. 2.99 mmol/L). Additionally, the TG had a significantly lower total protein concentration, with a 21.63% decrease at 30 days (46.32 g/L vs. 56.34 g/L) and a 20.28% decrease at 60 days (48.32 g/L vs. 58.12 g/L) compared to the CG. These findings indicate that dairy calves given conventional milk replacer along with a daily dose of 7.5 mL of B. subtilis probiotic experienced enhanced growth performance and a more favourable metabolic profile during the first 90 days of their lives. One of the selective advantages of delayed implantation in carnivores is the flexibility to decouple the time between mating and parturition, allowing both to occur when conditions are most favorable. Terrestrial carnivores with delayed implantation have evolved reduced maternal energy expenditure through shorter gestation length, smaller neonates, and smaller litters, with a possible linkage between maternal body condition and time of birth or litter size. Using data on wolverine (Gulo gulo) females and cubs from management removals covering the entire latitudinal gradient of the Scandinavian population in 2001‐2022, I assessed the effect of extrinsic and intrinsic factors on variation in parturition date and litter size. Timing of parturition varied over 2 months, where 90% of the litters were born between 5 February and 11 March, with a birth peak on 23 February. Females living in winter grazing pastures of semi‐domestic reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) gave birth earlier than those outside, and along an elevation gradient parturition date was delayed at higher altitudes. I did not find evidence of an effect of latitude on parturition date. Furthermore, older females had greater odds than younger females of having litters with 3 cubs rather than 1 cub. The white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) is a globally distributed top predator. Due to its ecological importance and historical declining population trends, data contributing to conservation initiatives (e.g. habitat protections and resource management) pertaining to all life stages of this species are essential to facilitate population recovery. Of particular interest, the locations and discrete seasonality of C. carcharias parturition remain uncertain. Understanding C. carcharias parturition in relation to each population is relevant to population recovery since neonate to young-of-the-year (YOY) sharks are more vulnerable to predation and particularly threatened by and susceptible to commercial fishing pressure. Herein, this paper provides a synthesis from published literature across seven well-studied C. carcharias populations to identify common trends associated with parturition location, seasonality, and habitat characteristics. The data reviewed in this study are consistent with previous population-specific hypotheses, that C. carcharias parturition occurs during spring and summer for all populations. Further, this review also indicates that parturition likely occurs in insular shelf waters and water temperatures ranging from15.7 to 23.1 °C. Although discrete parturition sites were not identified, the compiled data are suggestive that C. carcharias parturition may occur over horizontal and vertical spatial scales that exceed the inshore, shallow water environments associated with nursery area habitat to perhaps minimize predation by conspecifics. Due to the vulnerability of C. carcharias, conducting non-lethal technological (e.g., baited remote underwater video systems—BRUVS), morphological (i.e., ontogenetic changes in dorsal fin shape), and reproductive (e.g., blood chemistry and ultrasonography) research that may help identify parturition location and seasonality are thus warranted. Internationally, over one-third of women experience birth trauma, leading to adverse mental health outcomes. Poor communication with healthcare professionals is a primary contributing factor. Paramedics attend various clinical presentations, including childbirth, yet their potential impact on women's birth experiences has been largely overlooked. A systematic literature search was conducted following the Joanna Briggs Institute methodological framework. The search identified 1015 potentially suitable articles, and 5 articles met the inclusion criteria. Data was analysed using reflexive thematic analysis from a feminist standpoint. Three themes were generated: 1. First Impressions Count: paramedic demeanour impacted the woman's sense of safety and perception of paramedic clinical competence. 2. Choice as a Pathway to Control: when paramedics involved women in decision-making, it led to empowerment, while non-involvement led to women becoming passive participants. 3. Exposed, Violated and Disempowered: some paramedics disrespected and abused women, treating them solely as objects for the purpose of producing a baby. This review highlights the influence of paramedic communication on women's birth experiences. While some paramedics communicated respectfully, other paramedics were the perpetrators of Obstetric Violence. Introduction: There are striking disparities in perinatal health outcomes for Black women in the United States. Although the causes are multifactorial, research findings have increasingly identified social and structural determinants of health as contributors to perinatal disparities. Maltreatment during perinatal care, which is disproportionately experienced by Black women, may be one such contributor. Qualitative researchers have explored Black women's perinatal care experiences, but childbirth experience data has yet to be analyzed in‐depth across studies. The aim of this meta‐synthesis was to explore the birthing experience of Black women in the United States. Methods: PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO, and CINAHL databases were searched. Inclusion criteria were qualitative research studies that included birth experience data shared by self‐identified Black or African American women who had given birth in the United States. Exclusion criteria were reports that did not include rich qualitative data or only included experience data that did not specify the race of the participant (eg, data pooled for women of color). The search began February 2022 and ended June 2022. The Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist for Qualitative Research was used to appraise the research. Results were synthesized using content analysis. Results: Fifteen studies met inclusion criteria. Main themes included (1) trust: being known and seen; (2) how race influences care; (3) preserving autonomy; and (4) birth as trauma. Discussion: Fragmented care resulted in reports of poor birth experiences in several studies. Open communication and feeling known by perinatal care providers was influential in improving childbirth experiences among Black women; these themes are consistent with existing research. Further prospective research exploring relationships among these themes and perinatal outcomes is needed. Limitations of this report include the use of content analysis and meta‐synthesis which may lose the granularity of the original reports; however, the aggregation of voices may provide valuable, transferable, actionable insight that can inform future supportive care interventions. A growing body of research has documented disrespectful, abusive, and neglectful treatment of women in facilities during childbirth, as well as the drivers of such mistreatment. Yet, little research exists on effective interventions to improve Person-Centred Maternal Care (PCMC)-care that is respectful and responsive to individual women's preferences, needs, and values. We sought to extend knowledge on interventions to improve PCMC, with a focus on two factors - provider stress and implicit bias - that are driving poor PCMC and contributing to disparities in PCMC. In this paper we describe the process towards the development of the intervention. The intervention design was an iterative process informed by existing literature, behaviour change theory, formative research, and continuous feedback in consultation with key stakeholders. The intervention strategies were informed by the Social Cognitive Theory, Trauma Informed System framework, and the Ecological Perspective. This process resulted in the 'Caring for Providers to Improve Patient Experience (CPIPE)' intervention, which has 5 components: provider training, peer support, mentorship, embedded champions, and leadership engagement. The training includes didactic and interactive content on PCMC, stress, burnout, dealing with difficult situations, and bias, with some content integrated into emergency obstetric and neonatal care (EmONC) simulations to enable providers apply concepts in the context of managing an emergency. The other components create an enabling environment for ongoing individual behavior and facility culture change. The pilot study is being implemented in Migori County, Kenya. The CPIPE intervention is an innovative theory and evidence-based intervention that addresses key drivers of poor PCMC and centers the unique needs of vulnerable women as well as that of providers. This intervention will advance the evidence base for interventions to improve PCMC and has great potential to improve equity in PCMC and maternal and neonatal health.

Abstract Background Parturition is an inflammation process. Exaggerated inflammatory reactions in infection lead to preterm birth. Although nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) has been recognized as a classical transcription factor mediating inflammatory reactions, those mediated by NF-κB per se are relatively short-lived. Therefore, there may be other transcription factors involved to sustain NF-κB-initiated inflammatory reactions in gestational tissues in infection-induced preterm birth. Methods Cebpd-deficient mice were generated to investigate the role of CCAAT enhancer-binding protein δ (C/EBPδ) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced preterm birth, and the contribution of fetal and maternal C/EBPδ was further dissected by transferring Cebpd −/− or WT embryos to Cebpd −/− or WT dams. The effects of C/EBPδ pertinent to parturition were investigated in mouse and human myometrial and amnion cells. The interplay between C/EBPδ and NF-κB was examined in cultured human amnion fibroblasts. Results The mouse study showed that LPS-induced preterm birth was delayed by Cebpd deficiency in either the fetus or the dam, with further delay being observed in conceptions where both the dam and the fetus were deficient in Cebpd. Mouse and human studies showed that the abundance of C/EBPδ was significantly increased in the myometrium and fetal membranes in infection-induced preterm birth. Furthermore, C/EBPδ participated in LPS-induced upregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines as well as genes pertinent to myometrial contractility and fetal membrane activation in the myometrium and amnion respectively. A mechanistic study in human amnion fibroblasts showed that C/EBPδ, upon induction by NF-κB, could serve as a supplementary transcription factor to NF-κB to sustain the expression of genes pertinent to parturition. Conclusions C/EBPδ is a transcription factor to sustain the expression of gene initiated by NF-κB in the myometrium and fetal membranes in infection-induced preterm birth. Targeting C/EBPδ may be of therapeutic value in the treatment of infection-induced preterm birth.

The timely onset of female parturition is a critical determinant for pregnancy success. The highly heterogenous maternal decidua has been increasingly recognized as a vital factor in setting the timing of labor. Despite the cell type specific roles in parturition, the role of the uterine epithelium in the decidua remains poorly understood. This study uncovers the critical role of epithelial SHP2 in parturition initiation via COX1 and COX2 derived PGF2α leveraging epithelial specific Shp2 knockout mice, whose disruption contributes to delayed parturition initiation, dystocia and fetal deaths. Additionally, we also show that there are distinct types of epithelium in the decidua approaching parturition at single cell resolution accompanied with profound epithelium reformation via proliferation. Meanwhile, the epithelium maintains the microenvironment by communicating with stromal cells and macrophages. The epithelial microenvironment is maintained by a close interaction among epithelial, stromal and macrophage cells of uterine stromal cells. In brief, this study provides a previously unappreciated role of the epithelium in parturition preparation and sheds lights on the prevention of preterm birth.

The developmental activation of the corpus luteum (CL) structurally and functionally is critical for the temporally regulated establishment, maintenance, and termination of pregnancy in rats. In this study, we have investigated the possible involvement of autophagy in the regulation of the CL during pregnancy in rats. The expression ratio of microtubule-associated protein light chain 3 (LC3)-II/-I, a widely used indicator of autophagic activity, in the CL remained relatively stable until day 15 of pregnancy. Subsequently, it progressively increased until day 21, and then declined until day 3 postpartum. This fluctuation was closely associated with the tissue weight of the CL rather than progesterone (P4) production activity. Light and electron microscopy revealed the presence of immunoreactive LC3 aggregates and irregularly shaped autolysosome-like microstructures in the cytoplasm of luteal cells during late pregnancy. Notably, a bolus intrabursal injection of the autophagy inhibitor bafilomycin A1 on day 15 of pregnancy resulted in a significant reduction in luteal cell size and disrupted the normal alteration of circulating P4 levels. Consequently, treatment with this inhibitor increased the likelihood of the varied timing (both advanced and delayed) of delivery and led to reduced body weight in neonates when compared with the vehicle-treated control group. Our findings suggest that autophagy in the rat CL contributes to luteal tissue growth, influences P4 production, and thereby fine-tunes the regulation of gestation length in rats.

Simple Summary: Postbiotics are non-viable probiotic microorganisms, with or without their metabolites, that provide a health benefit to the host. They prevent the colonisation of pathogens by improving the gut environment for beneficial commensal bacteria. This effect reduces the incidence of digestive disorders in calves, which enhances animal growth and boosts the immune system and general health. The aim of this work was to evaluate the addition of postbiotics to dairy cow rations during the transition period on nutrient digestibility and milk productivity. The effects of two postbiotics from calving to two months of lactation were evaluated in twelve Friesian cows. The results suggest that postbiotic supplementation in late gestation and early lactation increases the voluntary intake of dry matter, with higher apparent total tract digestibility of nutrients. The inclusion of postbiotics in the dairy cow diet increases colostral immunoglobulin concentration and milk production with high fat and protein yields. The metabolites secreted by probiotics or released after their lysis are called postbiotics. Two digestibility balances were performed, one before parturition and one after parturition. Colostrum was sampled at first milking and milk was sampled weekly. Data were analysed using a mixed mode in R software 4.4.1. The results suggest that postbiotic supplementation in late gestation and early lactation increase the voluntary intake of dry matter, especially in the PR treatment, with higher apparent total tract digestibility of dry matter, organic matter and neutral detergent fibre. Both treatments including postbiotics induced an increase in colostral immunoglobulin concentration. Total bacterial count (TBC) and SCC are important quality parameters in goat milk. Exceeding the bulk milk TBC (BMTBC) thresholds leads to price penalties for Dutch dairy goat farmers. Controlling these milk quality parameters can be challenging, especially around kidding. First, we describe the variation and the peaks around kidding of TBC and SCC in census data on Dutch bulk milk over the last 22 yr. Second, to explore causes of these elevations, we studied the variation of TBC and SCC in individual goat milk from 3 wk before to 5 wk after kidding and their association with systemic response markers IFN-γ, calprotectin, BHB, BCS, and fecal consistency. We visited 4 Dutch dairy goat farms weekly for 10 to 16 wk around kidding. Some of the goats had been dried off; other goats were milked continuously throughout pregnancy. A total of 1,886 milk samples from 141 goats were collected for automated flow cytometric quantification of TBC and SCC measurement. IFN-γ, calprotectin, and BHB were determined twice in blood of the same goats; most samples were collected after kidding. The BCS and fecal consistency were scored visually before and after kidding. We found a strong correlation between TBC and SCC (Spearman's rho = 0.87) around kidding. Furthermore, in the third week before kidding, the average TBC (5.67 log 10 cfu/mL) and SCC (6.70 log 10 cells/mL) were significantly higher compared with the fifth week after kidding, where the average TBC decreased to 4.20 log 10 cfu/mL, and the average SCC decreased to 5.92 log 10 cells/mL. In multivariable linear regression models, farm and stage of lactation were significantly associated with TBC and SCC, but none of the systemic response markers correlated with TBC or SCC. In conclusion, TBC and SCC in dairy goats were high in late lactation and decreased shortly after parturition. For SCC, the dilution effect might have caused the decrease, but this was not plausible for TBC. Moreover, the excretion of bacteria and cells in goat milk was not associated with the selected systemic response markers that were chosen as a readout for general immunity status, intestinal health, and metabolic diseases. Therefore, we assume that the TBC increase before kidding and the decrease after parturition are caused by other systemic, possibly hormonal, processes. To reduce BMTBC and bulk milk SCC, it would be advisable to keep milk of goats with highest numbers of bacteria and cells in their milk out of the bulk milk during end lactation. The use of sensor-based measures of rumination time as a parameter for early disease detection has received a lot of attention in scientific research. This study aimed to assess the accuracy of health alerts triggered by a sensor-based accelerometer system within 2 different management strategies on a commercial dairy farm. Multiparous Holstein cows were enrolled during the dry-off period and randomly allocated to conventional (CON) or sensor-based (SEN) management groups at calving. All cows were monitored for disorders for a minimum of 10 DIM following standardized operating procedures (SOP). The CON group (n = 199) followed an established monitoring protocol on the farm. The health alerts of this group were not available during the study but were later included in the analysis. The SEN group (n = 197) was only investigated when the sensor system triggered a health alert, and a more intensive monitoring approach was implemented according to the SOP. To analyze the efficiency of the health alerts in detecting disorders, the sensitivity (SE) and specificity (SP) of health alerts were determined for the CON group. In addition, all cows were divided into 3 subgroups based on their health status and the status of the health alerts in order to retrospectively compare the course of rumination time. Most health alerts (87%, n = 217) occurred on DIM 1. For the confirmation of diagnoses, health alerts showed SE and SP levels of 71% and 47% for CON cows. In SEN cows, SE of 71% and 75% and SP of 48% and 43% were found for the detection of ketosis and hypocalcemia, respectively. Objectives: Previous research shows that sacroiliac (SI) joint fusion is age and sex dependent. Older individuals—specifically starting in the fifth or sixth decade of life—are more likely to develop SI fusion. Females have a lower frequency of SI joint fusion than males, perhaps due to pregnancy or parturition. This study examines the relationship between SI joint fusion with both sex and parity status in females. The issue is whether the prevalence of SI fusion in nulliparous females is more similar to that of males or parous females. Materials and Methods: The sample consists of 46 nulliparous females, 119 parous females, and 158 males from the William M. Bass Donated Skeletal Collection. Ages of the individuals ranged from 50 to 89 years. Sex, age, and parity status were self‐reported. Results: The frequency of SI joint fusion is significantly different among males (13.29%), nulliparous females (6.52%), and parous females (0.84%). Pairwise comparison of the three groups for SI joint fusion shows that parous females and males are significantly different, but nulliparous females are nonsignificantly different from parous females and males. Discussion: Parity status does not appear to be a factor in the sexually dimorphic nature of SI joint fusion in this sample. Rather, biomechanical and hormonal factors may have a greater contribution to higher rates of SI joint fusion in males than females. Pregnancy involving intricate tissue transformations governed by the progesterone hormone (P4). P4 signaling via P4 receptors (PRs) is vital for endometrial receptivity, decidualization, myometrial quiescence, and labor initiation. This study explored the role of TCF23 as a downstream target of PR during pregnancy. TCF23 was found to be expressed in female reproductive organs, predominantly in uterine stromal and smooth muscle cells. Tcf23 expression was high during midgestation and was specifically regulated by P4, but not estrogen. The Tcf23 knockout (KO) mouse was generated and analyzed. Female KO mice aged 4-6 months exhibited subfertility, reduced litter size, and defective parturition. Uterine histology revealed disrupted myometrial structure, altered collagen organization, and disarrayed smooth muscle sheets at the conceptus sites of KO mice. RNA-Seq analysis of KO myometrium revealed dysregulation of genes associated with cell adhesion and extracellular matrix organization. TCF23 potentially modulates TCF12 activity to mediate cell-cell adhesion and matrix modulation in smooth muscle cells. Overall, TCF23 deficiency leads to impaired myometrial remodeling, causing parturition delay and fetal demise. This study sheds light on the critical role of TCF23 as a dowstream mediator of PR in uterine remodeling, reflecting the importance of cell-cell communication and matrix dynamics in myometrial activation and parturition. Wildlife conservation often focuses on mitigating disturbance in critical habitats like reproductive ranges. We studied lambing and nursery habitat selection by Stone's sheep (Ovis dalli stonei (J.A. Allen, 1897)) in the Cassiar Mountains in British Columbia. We estimated the timing of parturition and delineated lambing and nursery habitats based on movement behaviours of collared females (n = 18) and vaginal implant transmitters. We identified 23 lambing events in 2018 (n = 4), 2019 (n = 13), and 2020 (n = 6). The median birth date was 17 May and ranged from 3 May to 14 June. Females remained in lambing habitats from 1.5 to 11.3 days with a median of 5.5 days. We examined habitat selection during the lambing and nursery periods at the home-range scale using resource selection functions, and at a finer scale using integrated step-selection analyses. Females selected southwest slopes in rugged terrain at mid-elevations, suggesting selection for warmer micro-climates and features that facilitate predator avoidance. Females avoided habitats near roads during the lambing period but showed selection for habitats near roads during the nursing period. We developed predictive maps of suitable lambing and nursery ranges to inform land planning to help reduce overlap of anthropogenic disturbance with potential reproductive habitats. We comment on a recent study (Vasenkov et al. in Dokl Biol Sci 513:395–399, 2023, https://doi.org/10.1134/S0012496623700746) presenting the movement paths of three greater noctule bats (Nyctalus lasiopterus), two juveniles and an adult, tracked from Russia in September–October 2020 and 2021, with particular emphasis on the unprecedented straight-line migration of a juvenile male to Italy. Notably, the juvenile's extraordinary 2515 km migration marks the longest recorded (as the crow flies) movement in a bat species. We argue that the two juveniles may represent cases of dispersal. Despite the attention garnered by Vasenkov et al.'s findings, caution is warranted in interpreting the broader migration picture. The paper's dissemination underscores a potential oversimplification, neglecting key insights from recent work conducted in Italy that documented the year-round presence, hibernation, and parturition of N. lasiopterus in an area of the Friuli Venezia-Giulia region where the juvenile male tracked from Russia stopped over. Besides, inferring the existence of migratory routes based on small numbers of tracked bats is insufficient. The oversight of these findings may imply a misleading narrative about the species' behaviour, likely representing a case of partial migration, a pattern widespread among migratory bat species. During the gestation and lactation period, the energy demand in pregnant and lactating bitches is elevated. Non‐esterified fatty acids (NEFAs) are utilized either directly from the fed diet or from body fat storage. High NEFA concentration in the blood plasma leads to an increased risk for diseases. Therefore, measuring blood NEFA concentrations may be an indicator for a period of scarcity. The aim of this study is to explore if serum NEFA concentrations in healthy bitches change during gestation and lactation. Healthy pregnant and lactating bitches were sampled on three appointed dates around parturition. NEFA values were examined with a multiparameter clinical chemistry analyser. All statistical analyses were performed using R. Overall, 38 bitches were enrolled in the study. Twenty‐one bitches were sampled on all three appointed dates. The median NEFA concentration antepartum was 0.73 mmol/L (IQR: 0.59, 1.01); during peak lactation, it was 0.57 mmol/L (IQR: 0.44, 0.82); and around weaning, it was 0.58 mmol/L (IQR: 0.46, 0.73). NEFA concentrations rose slightly with litter size in late gestation. Body condition score had no influence on observed NEFA values. We conclude that NEFA concentrations widely remain within reference ranges in well‐fed pregnant and lactating bitches. Background: In the livestock industry, Foreign Body Syndrome is a devastating disease condition. Feeding management, lacking of food discrimination, and eating chopped food increase the risk of swallowing sharp foreign bodies in bovine species. In addition to the honeycomb cells shape of the reticulum, the contractions of the reticular wall, gravid uterine pressure, and parturition efforts, foreign bodies can penetrate the reticular wall, causing cascade of problems including traumatic reticulitis, traumatic reticuloperitonitis, and traumatic pericarditis. The present study was carried out to evaluate the diagnostic significance of cardiac troponin I rapid test cassette and other cardiac biomarkers including serum cardiac troponin I (cTn I), creatine kinase-myocardial band (CK-MB), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and aspartate aminotransferase enzyme (AST), in confirmed cases of traumatic pericarditis (TP) and/or traumatic reticuleoperitonitis (TRP) in cattle and buffaloes. Methods: A total number of 30 animals (22 cattle and 8 buffaloes) with different signs such as anorexia, jugular distension, brisket edema, and signs of pain (reluctance to move, arching back, and abduction of the forelimbs) were included in the present study. Based on case history, clinical signs, ferroscopic, pericardiocentesis, radiographic and ultrasonographic examinations, TP were confirmed in cattle (n = 10) and buffaloes (n = 8) while TRP were confirmed only in cattle (n = 12). Additionally, 20 clinically healthy animals (n = 10 cattle and 10 buffaloes) were used as a control group. Blood samples were collected for determination of blood level of Tn-I, and activity of CK-MB, LDH, and AST. Results: The obtained results revealed a highly significant increase in serum cTn I in diseased cattle with TP and TRP (P = 0.00), while buffaloes with TP showed no significant changes in serum cTn I (P = 0.111). Both diseased cattle and buffaloes showed increased serum activities of CK-MB, AST, and LDH enzyme. On the other hand, cardiac troponin I rapid test cassette failed to detect cTn I in diseased animals. Conclusion: The study concluded that the cardiac troponin I rapid test cassette did not have a diagnostic significance and could not be used as a point-of-care under field condition for diagnosis of TP and TRP in large ruminants. However, the serum troponin I level is helpful in diagnosis of TP and TRP in cattle. Although cardiac biomarkers have some diagnostic values in TP and TRP, the traditional diagnostic methods (clinical, radiography and ultrasonography examinations) are crucial for thorough evaluation of TP/TRP cases in bovine. Data on the reproductive biology of elasmobranchs are essential for understanding their life history. Published studies on batoid ray reproductive biology are comparatively scarce, leading to limited understanding and data gaps. The Oceania fantail ray, Taeniura lessoni, is a good example. This Data Deficient nearshore stingray is restricted to Melanesia, with lacking biological and ecological data, including reproduction. To expand upon the limited life-history data for this species, this short paper provides observational data on the reproductive condition in female T. lessoni, at Drawaqa Island, Fiji. Field work involved direct observations and ocean temperature measurements. Over 40 days spanning three months, 105 surveys were conducted across five sites, resulting in 71 sightings of the species. Based on spot patterns and body markings, four female individuals were identified. Between January and March 2024, these females exhibited convex dorsa indicating advanced gestation, transitioning to concave dorsa suggesting parturition. The presence of neonates from early March onwards coincided with the estimated parturition period inferred from the rays' condition. Furthermore, a female previously pregnant was photographed with a dermal abrasion around her pectoral fin, possibly indicating pre-copulatory biting, suggesting a continuous reproductive cycle. The average monthly water temperature at the surveyed sites remained relatively stable throughout the study. Collectively, our findings suggest that Drawaqa Island provides suitable habitat niches for reproductive activities in female T. lessoni. Repeated and long-term data is certainly needed to confirm either a continuous reproductive cycle or seasonal peaks. Metabolic adaptations to negative energy balance, as well as lipomobilization, influence inflammatory responses, immune function, and oxidative stress in animals. This study aimed to evaluate the biochemical profile of Mediterranean buffaloes with different levels of lipomobilization from the prepartum to the postpartum period. A total of 76 Mediterranean buffaloes were enrolled, and a weekly blood sample was taken from 7 weeks before to 6 weeks after calving. The concentration of non-esterified fatty acids (NEFAs) was determined in serum and was used to categorize buffaloes into three lipomobilization groups 7 weeks before calving: mild (NEFA-I; NEFA ≤ 0.29 mEq/L; n = 18), medium (NEFA-II; 0.29 < NEFA < 0.57mEq/L; n = 20), and severe (NEFA-III; NEFA ≥ 0.57mEq/L; n = 38). Two-way repeated measures ANOVA was used to assess changes within and between the groups and over time. Significant differences were found in the concentration levels of NEFA, β-hydroxybutyrate, glucose, cholesterol, protein profile, oxygen radicals, antioxidants, lysozyme, complement, and minerals. These results suggest that both medium and severe lipomobilization groups are associated with metabolic alterations. In conclusion, buffaloes with higher NEFA levels (>0.29mEq/L; NEFA-II and NEFA-III) at 7weeks before calving should be monitored more closely to reduce the risk of metabolic diseases. Furthermore, the medium (NEFA-II) and severe (NEFA-III) lipomobilization groups could be associated with differences in the animals' ability to manage their metabolic status. Specifically, the severe mobilization group was most associated with a greater energy deficit during both the prepartum and postpartum periods without oxidative stress. On the contrary, the medium mobilization group was associated with a less severe energy deficit but was also associated with an inflammatory status and oxidative stress during the prepartum period. Background: Fatty liver in dairy cows is a common metabolic disease defined by triglyceride (TG) buildup in the hepatocyte. Clinical diagnosis of fatty liver is usually done by liver biopsy, causing considerable economic losses in the dairy industry owing to the lack of more effective diagnostic methods. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the potential utility of blood biomarkers for the diagnosis and early warning of fatty liver in dairy cows. Results: A total of twenty-four lactating cows within 28 days after parturition were randomly selected as experimental animals and divided into healthy cows (liver biopsy tested, n = 12) and cows with fatty liver (liver biopsy tested, n = 12). Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to determine the macroelements and microelements in the serum of two groups of cows. Compared to healthy cows (C), concentrations of calcium (Ca), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), strontium (Sr), selenium (Se), manganese (Mn), boron (B) and molybdenum (Mo) were lower and copper (Cu) was higher in fatty liver cows (F). Meanwhile, the observed differences in macroelements and microelements were related to delivery time, with the greatest major disparity between C and F occurring 7 days after delivery. Multivariable analysis was used to test the correlation between nine serum macroelements, microelements and fatty liver. Based on variable importance projection and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, minerals Ca, Se, K, B and Mo were screened as the best diagnostic indicators of fatty liver in postpartum cows. Conclusions: Our data suggested that serum levels of Ca, K, Mg, Se, B, Mo, Mn, and Sr were lower in F than in C. The most suitable period for an early-warning identification of fatty liver in cows was 7 days after delivery, and Ca, Se, K, B and Mo were the best diagnostic indicators of fatty liver in postpartum cows.
