In this study, we examined myxozoan infections of Labeobarbus batesii sampled from the Makombè River in Cameroon. Fish were infected with Myxobolus makombensis n. sp. in the gill filament and M. dibombensis in the fins. Mature myxospores of M. makombensis n. sp. are pyriform in frontal view and biconvex in lateral view, with a truncated and slightly narrow anterior end. Spore dimensions (mean ± SD, with range in parentheses) are 17.5 ± 0.22 (16.2-18.9) μm length, 13.4 ± 0.25 (12-14.9) μm width, and 7 ± 0.21 (6.7-7.5) μm thickness, and spores exhibit a conspicuous anterior intercapsular appendix of 4.4 ± 0.18 (3.9-5.5) µm length. Myxospores have 2 pyriform polar capsules of unequal size; the larger one is 9.8 ± 0. 22 (8.2-10.9) μm long × 4.7 ± 0.15 (3.5-5.2) µm wide, and the smaller one is 8.8 ± 0.22 (7-10) µm long × 4.3 ± 0.12 (3.5-5.2) µm wide. Polar filaments possess 10 to 11 coils in the large polar capsule and 8 to 10 coils in the small polar capsule. Phylogenetic analysis of SSU rDNA sequences showed clustering of M. makombensis n. sp. close to M. dibombensis recently reported from the fins of the same host within a clade composed exclusively of parasites infecting cyprinid fishes.

In March and April 2018, we carried out a survey of myxosporean parasites in coastal fishes collected from Nha Trang Bay in Vietnam's East Sea. Of the 159 fish specimens, 18 fish species were represented, belonging to 10 families. In 8 host species, 7 myxosporean species were found, representing the genera Kudoa and Unicapsula. Two of these species were new to science: Kudoa igori n. sp. from the gallbladder of Longarm mullet Osteomugil cunnesius (Valenciennes, 1836) (prevalence 10%) and Kudoa borimiri n. sp. from skeletal muscles of Longarm mullet and Longfinned mullet Osteomugil perusii (Valenciennes, 1836) (prevalence 30% and 60%, respectively). Vegetative stages were not found. Spores of K. igori n. sp. were small, orbicular to quadrate in apical view, and with four equal valves. In lateral view, spores were shallowly ovoid with a slightly protruding anterior pole. The 4 polar capsules were slightly unequal sizes and were oriented toward the apex of the spore. Dimensions were as follows: spore length 4.56 ± 0.22 (4.18-4.56), thickness 4.42 ± 0.39 (3.55-5.13), width 5.74 ± 0.46 (4.66-6.50), length of biggest polar capsule 1.38 ± 0.14 (1.1-1.65), middle 1.28 ± 0.12 (1.03-1.53), smallest 1.13 ± 0.11 (0.94-1.30), width of biggest polar capsule 1.03 ± 0.14 (0.83-1.4), middle 0.92 ± 0.12 (0.76-1.08), smallest 0.74 ± 0.12 (0.55-0.94). Spores of K. borimiri n. sp. had four equal valves with slightly rounded ends and were quadrate in apical view. In lateral view, spores were broadly deltoid. Four equal-sized polar capsules opened at the apex of the spore. In O. cunnesius, spore dimensions were as follows: length 3.51 ± 0.15 (3.34-3.92), thickness 3.65 ± 0.38 (2.79-4.21), width 4.97 ± 0.37 (4.13-5.97), length of the polar capsules 1.23 ± 0.18 (0.99-1.57), width 0.88 ± 0.07 (0.70-1.00). Overlapping dimensions for K. borimiri n. sp. spores were also found in O. perusii. Other known myxozoan species we encountered were Kudoa thyrsites and Kudoa whippsi, which had not previously been reported from the East Sea and Vietnam. We also encountered Kudoa monodactyli, which had not previously been reported from Nha Trang Bay. In addition, we report 2 additional species, a Kudoa sp. and a Unicapsula sp., that were not attributable to previously described myxozoans and need further investigation to completely characterize.

During a survey of myxosporean parasites of freshwater fishes in northern Vietnam, myxospores resembling those of the genus Myxobolus (Myxosporea: Myxobolidae) were found in the trunk muscle of 6 out of 35 specimens (17.14%) of wild goldfish Carassius auratus (Cypriniformes: Cyprinidae). The mature spores were 12.0 ± 0.4 (11.4 - 12.6) µm long, 8.5 ± 0.2 (7.9 - 9.0) µm wide and 6.1 ± 0.2 (5.8 - 6.3) µm thick, containing two pyriform-shaped polar capsules unequal in size. The larger polar capsule was 7.6 ± 0.3 (7.1 - 8.4) µm long and 3.5 ± 0.1 (3.3 - 3.8) µm wide, and the smaller polar capsule was 6.2 ± 0.3 (5.5 - 6.7) µm long and 2.9 ± 0.2 (2.6 - 3.4) µm wide. Each polar capsule contained a polar filament with 3-5 coils. A phylogenetic analysis based on the small subunit rDNA (SSU rDNA) sequence revealed that this Myxobolus species forms a distinct branch in the phylogenetic tree sister to Myxobolus artus and Myxobolus cyprini, with DNA sequence similarity at 97.6% to M. artus and 97.5% to M. cyprini. A combination of the morphological characteristics and molecular data suggest that this is an undescribed species, and we propose the name Myxobolus hoabinhensis n. sp.

The present study describes a new species of myxosporean, Sphaeromyxa cornuti n. sp. infecting the gallbladder of the Moorish idol, Zanclus cornutus (Linnaeus 1758) collected from Lakshadweep waters of the Arabian Sea.Fish were collected using traps and cages. The morphology of mature spores recovered from the gallbladder of Z. cornutus was studied under Nomarski Differential Interference Contrast (DIC) optics. The molecular and phylogenetic analyses were based on SSU rDNA.Sphaeromyxa cornuti n. sp. is characterized by arcuate myxospores with tapering extremities and round ends in valvular, and slightly sigmoid in sutural views (19.2-24.7 µm × 4.1-5.7 µm). The two polar capsules are unequally elongate-ovoid in shape and positioned at opposite ends of the spore (6.2-9.7 µm × 1.7-2.6 µm). Each encloses an irregularly folded, ribbon-like polar tubule, which is oriented parallel to polar capsule axis. In molecular and phylogenetic analyses, the present myxosporean revealed significant differences with related forms and clustered together with S. hellandi within the 'incurvata' group of the Sphaeromyxa clade with high nodal support.Morphological, morphometric, molecular and phylogenetic differences between our material and previously described species of Sphaeromyxa, along with host and geographic variations indicate that the present myxosporean is unique and the name Sphaeromyxa cornuti n. sp. is proposed. This forms the first report of a myxosporean parasite-infecting Z. cornutus.

The skeletal muscle of 13 of 48 (27.1%) Engraulis encrasicolus (L.) specimens from North East Atlantic waters (FAO 27.8.c) was found infected with interfibrillar elongated plasmodia (130-980 µm in length) containing mature myxospores belonging to the genus Kudoa Meglitsch, 1947. No flesh softening was found associated with infection. Fresh myxospores were 10.8 ± 0.7 (9.1-12.3) µm in width 1, 11.3 ± 0.9 (9.5-13.4) µm in width 2, 6.7 ± 0.4 (5.8-7.4) µm in thickness, and 6.9 ± 0.5 (5.8-7.5) µm in length. They were almost stellate in apical view having three pointed-edged shell valves bearing three small polar capsules equal in size 5.0 ± 0.3 (4.4-5.4) μm long and 2.4 ± 0.2 (2.0-3.0) μm wide, and one rounded- to rarely bluntly pointed-edged shell valve bearing a large and particularly wide polar capsule 6.8 ± 0.4 (5.9-7.6) μm long and 4.1 ± 0.2 (3.6-4.4) μm wide. Morphological and morphometrical comparisons between these myxospores and those of Kudoa thyrsites (Gilchrist, 1923) from the clupeid Sardina pilchardus (Walbaum) (North East Atlantic waters, FAO 27.9.a), with which exhibited a similarity of 98.9% and 96.2% using SSU and LSU rDNA sequences, respectively, support the creation of Kudoa encrasicoli n. sp. Morphometrical analysis of the polar capsules of flattened myxospores is suggested as a useful approach to differentiate phylogenetically related kudoids with stellate or almost stellate myxospores bearing four polar capsules. Members of the genus Kudoa Meglitsch, 1947 are known to infect the muscles of commercially important fishes worldwide, including those in the order Siluriformes. This paper describes the occurrence of a new species of Kudoa in the catfish Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii based on morphological study and molecular analysis of the ribosomal RNA gene (SSU rDNA).Fifteen specimens of Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii were purchased from fishing zones near Mosqueiro Island, Belém, Pará, Brazil. After necropsy, tissue samples and cysts were analyzed using a stereomicroscope, and fresh slides were viewed under a light microscope to confirm parasitic infection. The tissue fragments were removed and processed for molecular and histological analyses.Microscopic pseudocysts were found in the epaxial region of skeletal muscle fibers in 80% of the analyzed specimens. The myxospores were quadrangular with four shell valves (SV), pyriform polar capsules (PC), and internal symmetry. Phylogenetic analyses indicated that the new species formed a cluster with the species previously described in the Amazon, being close to two freshwater species.Morphological differences and molecular data of SSU rDNA support that Kudoa rousseauxii n. sp. is a new species that infects B. rousseauxii, a freshwater fish with intense migratory cycles that is widely captured and consumed in the Amazon.

Myxozoa represent a diverse group of microscopic cnidarian endoparasites alternating between invertebrate and vertebrate hosts. Of the approximately 2,600 species described predominantly from teleost fish, only 1.8% have been reported from cartilaginous fishes (Elasmobranchii). As ancestral vertebrate hosts of myxozoans, elasmobranchs may have played an important role in myxozoan evolution, however, they are also some of the largest vertebrate hosts known for this group of parasites. We screened 50 elasmobranchs belonging to nine species and seven families, from various geographical areas, for myxozoan infection. We found a 22% overall prevalence of myxozoans in elasmobranchs and describe five species new to science. We investigated, for the first known time, the evolution of spore size within three phylogenetic clades, Ceratomyxa, Sphaerospora sensu stricto and Parvicapsula. We found that spores from elasmobranch-infecting myxozoans were on average 4.8× (Ceratomyxa), 2.2× (Parvicapsula clade) and 1.8× (Sphaerospora sensu stricto except polysporoplasmic Sphaerospora spp.) larger than those from teleosts. In all analysed clades, spore size was correlated with phylogenetic position. In ceratomyxids, it was further strongly positively correlated with fish body size and habitat depth, independent of cellular composition of the spores and phylogenetic position in the tree. While in macroparasites a host size-correlated increase in parasite size occurs on a large scale and is often related to improved exploitation of host resources, in microscopic parasites size ranges vary at the scale of a few micrometres, disproportionate to the available additional space in a large host. We discuss the ecological role of these changes with regard to transmission under high pressure and an invertebrate fauna that is adapted to deeper marine habitats.

A new myxozoan species, Ceratomyxa binhthuanensis n. sp. (Myxosporea: Ceratomyxidae), was found in the gall bladder of blacktip grouper Epinephelus fasciatus (Perciformes: Serranidae) in the East Sea of Vietnam. Myxospores were observed floating free in the gall bladder of 3 out of 20 fish examined (15%). Mature myxospores were elongate and slightly crescent-shaped and measured 12.2 ± 1.3 (10.8-16.0) μm in thickness and 5.8 ± 0.6 (4.8-6.9) μm in length, with two smooth equal shell valves. The two polar capsules were spherical and equal in size, measuring 2.6 ± 0.3 (2.3-2.9) μm in diameter. The posterior angle was slightly concave, 153.7° ± 5.6° (148.9°-166.0°). Molecular analysis of SSU rDNA sequence showed that Ceratomyxa binhthuanensis n. sp. differs from other Ceratomyxa spp. available in GenBank. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that C. binhthuanensis n. sp. was closely related to three species, Ceratomyxa nolani, Ceratomyxa yokoyamai, and Ceratomyxa cutmorei, which also infect fish hosts of the genus Epinephelus.

Members of the class Myxosporea Bütschli, 1881 have a cosmopolitan distribution in a wide variety of fish species worldwide. In the present study, the black scorpionfish Scorpaena porcus collected from the Sinop coasts of the Black Sea was investigated for myxosporean parasites using both conventional and molecular methods in the period between September 2015 and August 2019. Using morphological and morphometric data, the myxosporean parasite Ceratomyxa scorpaeni Garbouj, Rangel, Castro, Hmissi, Santos, Bahri, 2016 was identified in the gall bladder of host fish. Molecular analysis of the 18S rDNA gene confirmed the identity of this parasite as C. scorpaeni. This is the first report of its occurrence in the Black Sea.

Proliferative kidney disease (PKD), caused by the myxozoan endoparasite Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae, is of serious ecological and economical concern to wild and farmed salmonids. Wild salmonid populations have declined due to PKD, primarily in rivers, in Europe and North America. Deep lakes are also important habitats for salmonids, and this work aimed to investigate parasite presence in five deep Norwegian lakes. Kidney samples from three salmonid species from deep lakes were collected and tested using real-time PCR to detect PKD parasite presence. We present the first detection of T. bryosalmonae in European whitefish in Norway for the first time, as well as the first published documentation of the parasite in kidneys of Arctic charr, brown trout and whitefish in four lakes. The observed prevalence of the parasite was higher in populations of brown trout than of Arctic charr and whitefish. The parasite was detected in farmed, but not in wild, charr in one lake. This suggests a possible link with a depth of fish habitat and fewer T. bryosalmonae-infected and PKD-affected fish. Towards a warmer climate, cold hypolimnion in deep lakes may act as a refuge for wild salmonids, while cold deep water may be used to control PKD in farmed salmonids.

In the present study, 2 species of myxozoan parasites, the novel Ceratomyxa scophthalmi sp. nov. and Myxidium finnmarchicum, were documented from the gallbladder of Scophthalmus maeoticus inhabiting the Turkish Black Sea coast at Sinop. C. scophthalmi sp. nov. had mostly spherical, clavate, and fine-grained polymorphic plasmodia that ranged in diameter from 16.0 to 29.0 µm. Spores were arcuate with a convex anterior margin and concave posterior. Valves of spores were highly elongated and unequal in thickness with one valve 1.1-1.3 times thicker than the other. Valves narrowed gradually toward slightly truncated ends. The mean (range) dimensions of spores were 9.4 (8.5-10.0) µm in length and 49.6 (44.5-55.0) µm in thickness, with polar capsules that were 3.1 (2.7-3.5) µm in length and 3.2 (2.7-3.5) µm in width. Polar filaments were coiled with 4-5 turns. Large numbers of immature forms of C. scophthalmi sp. nov., which were often ‘crumpled’, and mature forms were found together in the gallbladder bile. Along with morphological differences, phylogenetic analysis based on 18S rDNA, including pairwise nucleotide similarities with other related Ceratomyxa species, suggests C. scophthalmi as a novel species. Moreover, this report provides the first morphological and molecular descriptions of M. finnmarchicum outside of its original geographical location and type host species.

Infestation by parasitic copepods is a substantial problem in the cage culture of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). The Copepoda parasite, Lernanthropus kroyeri (Lernanthropidae), is one of the threats to the mariculture of sea bass. In the present study, we evaluated the data of abundance for L. kroyeri pre-adults and adult males (PAAM) and ovigerous adult females (AFo ) to estimate the internal infection pressure (IIP) in the same cage environment. The sea bass infested by L. kroyeri was collected from grow-out sea cages located in Gulluk Bay (Turkey) in September and October 2019. Mean fish weight and length of sea bass were 75.79 ± 1.66 g and 21.40 ± 0.56 cm, respectively. The fixed lag method was used to predict the abundance of L. kroyeri adult females. The overall prevalence of L. kroyeri was 60%. The mean abundance of PAAM and AFo varied from 0.8 ± 0.24 to 2.5 ± 0.67 and 2.9 ± 0.40 to 4.3 ± 0.55, respectively. The abundance of AF was strongly correlated with PAAM. The pattern of AFo and PAAM was interpreted as an indication of the continuous infestation of L. kroyeri on sea bass. Our results showed that the correlation of AFo abundance for five consecutive weeks was significant, representing the main determinative factor for the continuity of the parasitic load. In our approach, internal infestation pressure is the quantitative estimation of the potential infective copepodids, which are mainly characterized by AF abundance and the prevalence. We predicted that the internal infestation pressure could be high, even exceeding the 50.000 × 106 potential infective copepodids for one sea cage with the fish density of 20 sea bass/m3 .

The class Myxozoa consists of microscopic spores that typically present uniform morphological simplifications, containing one or two sporoplasms surrounded by valve cells. The present study analysed the morphological and phylogenetic characteristics of what proved to be a new species of Ceratomyxa found in the gallbladder of Mesonauta festivus Heckel, 1840 captured on the Piririm River in the municipality of Macapa, in Amapa state, Brazil. The fish were collected in gillnets, and were transported alive to Amapa State University in Macapa for the analysis of the organs. Crescent- or arch-shaped free spores were observed under light microscopy, containing two polar capsules and a suture line, which is typical of the morphology of the genus Ceratomyxa, contained within plasmodia that had snake-like movements. The gallbladder was conserved in 80% alcohol for the analysis of the 18S rDNA gene, and in Davidson solution for standardhistology. Ceratomyxa spores (n = 20) were observed in 11 of the 50 samplesanalysed, and thus had a prevalence of 22%, and had a mean length of 4.2 ± 0.5 µm, mean thickness of 22.75 ± 0.3 µm, and two polar capsules, 1.86 ± 0.3 µm long and 1.63 ± 0.1 µm thick. The phylogenetic analysis indicated that the new species forms a cluster with other freshwater Amazonian Ceratomyxa species, described previously. The new species represents the first description of a taxon of the genus Ceratomyxain fish from the Brazilian state of Amapa.

Co-infection with parasites and bacteria is of frequent occurrence in aquaculture, leads to growth impedance otherwise mortality in fish depending on the varying degree of a load of primary pathogen either parasite or bacteria. The mechanistic regulation of immune response during co-infection in fish has merely documented. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of co-infection with Aeromonas hydrophila at three exposure doses of Argulus sp. on the innate immune responses and antioxidative stress enzymes of goldfish (Carassius auratus). The experimental fish were randomly distributed into eight treatment groups viz. T1 (control group without Argulus and A. hydrophila infection), T2 (fish exposed to a sub-lethal dose of A. hydrophila), T3 (low Argulus-infested fish), T4 (T3 + sub-lethal dose of A. hydrophila), T5 (moderate Argulus-infested fish), T6 (T5 + sub-lethal dose of A. hydrophila), T7 (high Argulus-infested fish) and T8 (T7+ sub-lethal dose of A. hydrophila) in duplicates. After distributing experimental fish into their respective treatment group, A. hydrophila was injected to T2, T4, T6 and T8. After the bacterial challenge, four fish from each experimental group were randomly sampled on 24, 72, and 168 h and subjected to the hematological, innate immune parameters and enzymatic analysis. In the co-infection group T8, a high degree of enhanced pathogenicity of A. hydrophila was noticed with increased mortalities (84.2%) in comparison to other groups. The current study shows a declining pattern in RBC, PCV and Hb values with the degree of parasite infestation without co-infection groups. Moreover, in the T8 group, exposure of a sub-lethal dose of bacteria resulted in a drastic reduction of the recorded parameters. Furthermore, a decreased value for WBC, monocyte and neutrophil was found in higher parasite group co-infected with a sub-lethal dose of bacteria relative to other co-infected groups during the experimental period. Also, a decrease in innate immune parameters and antioxidative stress enzymes were observed in the T8 group compared to T7 and T2 groups throughout the trial period. These findings indicate that a rise in the dose of Argulus infection improves A. hydrophila colonization in goldfish and contributes to suppression of the innate immune system and increased mortality.

Enteromyxum leei is a causative agent of enteromyxosis, with a wide range of marine fish hosts. Recently, massive morbidity and mortality were caused by E. leei infection in cultured olive flounders in Korea. To reveal a relationship between E. leei abundance in culture water and the occurrence of parasite infection in host fish, we used a quantitative PCR assay targeting the 28S rDNA of E. leei in three fish farms (two where enteromyxosis had occurred and one where it did not) from April to November 2018. The gene of E. leei was detected at levels greater than 10 cells/L in the culture water where enteromyxosis occurred from July to September. Furthermore, 2 months after the detection in the water, the parasite gene (with more than 5,000 cells per 100 mg) was detected in fish intestine samples. However, in the fish farms where enteromyxosis had not occurred, the E. leei gene was detected at

The California kingsnake (Lampropeltis californiae), native to North America, is a significant threat to the conservation of endemic species in the Spanish Macaronesian island of Gran Canaria. However, its role disseminating potential invasive parasites, such as zoonotic pentastomids, has not been proven. Among its parasitic fauna, only protistans have been documented, in contrast to other Lampropeltis spp., which are known to carry pentastomids. Thus, a parasitological study is urgently required. Between 2016 and 2018, a total of 108 snakes were necropsied and stool samples examined. A single snake was infested with Ophionyssus natricis, and another individual with Serpentirhabdias sp. Only this latter snake presented gross lesions, characterized by granulomatous pneumonia. No Pentastomida were found. By contrast, almost the entire population (98.5%) was infested with larval helminths (three different nematode and two cestode species), characterized by granulomatous gastrointestinal serositis. This suggests the snake poses a ‘dead end’ host for local parasites. Based on these findings, snakes in Gran Canaria carry potential zoonotic mites, which along with Serpentirhabdias sp. could represent a threat to endemic lizards. The presence of metazoan parasites and their lesions are reported for the first time in the California kingsnake.

Here, we explore the behavior of potential hosts of non-trophically transmitted parasites at mesocarnivore carcass sites. We used videos recorded by camera traps at 56 red fox (Vulpes vulpes) carcasses and 10 carcasses of other wild carnivore species in three areas of southeastern Spain. Scavenging species, especially wild canids, mustelids and viverrids, showed more frequent rubbing behavior at carcass sites than non-scavenging and domestic species, suggesting that they could be exposed to a higher potential infection risk. The red fox was the species that most frequently contacted carcasses and marked and rubbed carcass sites. Foxes contacted heterospecific carcasses more frequently and earlier than conspecific ones and, when close contact occurred, it was more likely to be observed at heterospecific carcasses. This suggests that foxes avoid contact with the type of carcass and time period that have the greatest risk as a source of parasites. Overall, non-trophic behaviors of higher infection risk were mainly associated with visitor-carcass contact and visitor contact with feces and urine, rather than direct contact between visitors. Moreover, contact events between scavengers and carnivore carcasses were far more frequent than consumption events, which suggests that scavenger behavior is more constrained by the risk of acquiring meat-borne parasites than non-trophically transmitted parasites. Henneguya polarislonga n. sp. is described from the gills of Astyanax lacustris (Lütken, 1875) (Characiformes, Characidae) from streams of the Middle Paranapanema River, Upper Paraná River basin, in the São Paulo State, Brazil. The proposed new species is supported by a combination of morphological and molecular characterization (partial fragment of the SSU rDNA). Thirty specimens of A. lacustris were analyzed and myxospores were found in the gill lamellae of one specimen (Prevalence = 3.3%). Henneguya polarislonga n. sp. was morphometrically and genetically distinct from other Henneguya spp. previously described in Astyanax spp., mainly differing in the total length and caudal appendages length of the mature myxospores. Comparative analysis of the SSU rDNA sequences revealed that Seisactinomyxon-type actinospores previously reported parasitizing oligochaetes are developmental stages of the life cycle of Henneguya polarislonga n. sp. (similarity of 99.9%). This is the first time that an actinospore and a myxospore are correlated through molecular analysis in Brazil, contributing to the knowledge of the myxozoan ecology and biodiversity.

While around world, species of the genus Ceratomyxa parasite majority marine hosts, growing diversity has been reported in South American freshwater fish. The present study reports Ceratomyxa barbata n. sp. parasitizing the gallbladder of the Rhaphiodon vulpinus fish from the Amazon and La Plata basins. Morphological (light and transmission electron microscopy), molecular (sequencing of small subunit ribosomal DNA - SSU rDNA), and phylogenetic analyses were used to characterize the new species. Worm-like plasmodia endowed with motility were found swimming freely in the bile. The myxospores were elongated, lightly arcuate, with rounded ends and had polar tubules with 3 coils in the polar capsules. Ultrastructural analysis revealed plasmodia composed of an outer cytoplasmic region, where elongated tubular mitochondria, a rough endoplasmic reticulum, sporogonic stages, and a large vacuole occupying the internal area were observed. Phylogenetic analysis, based on SSU rDNA, found that among all South America freshwater Ceratomyxa species, C. barbata n. sp. arises as an earlier divergent species. The present study reveals the occurrence of this host-parasite system (R. vulpinus/C. barbata n. sp.) in the two largest watersheds on the continent.

Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) rearing in lakes and reservoirs above dams have been known to become heavily infected with an ectoparasitic copepod (Salmincola californiensis). Little is known about the factors that affect the parasite infection prevalence and intensity. However, previous research suggests that the parasite may negatively affect the fitness and survival of the host fish. The effect of water temperature, confinement and the density of the free-swimming infectious stage of S. californiensis, the copepodid, on infection prevalence and intensity was evaluated by experimentally exposing juvenile Chinook Salmon (O. tshawytscha). Infection rates observed in wild populations were achieved under warm water (15-16°C) and high copepodid density (150-300/L) treatment conditions. Infection prevalence and intensity were also significantly higher in larger fish. During the infection experiment, 4.5% of infected fish died within 54 days with mortality significantly related to copepod infection intensity. The potential for autoinfection was compared to cross-infection by cohabitation of infected fish with naïve fish. Previously infected fish had significantly greater infection intensity compared with naïve fish, indicating that infected fish can be reinfected and that they may be more susceptible than naïve fish.

"The piscine respiratory system is represented by gills. Gill diseases are extremely common and may be caused by a large variety of etiologic agents. The gills are in direct contact with water and reflect its quality, for example, pollution, and they also must face the presence of biotic agents, such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites. Evolution has established many defense mechanisms to combat these agents. Failure of these mechanisms is life-threatening for the fish, due to impaired respiration. Gills are relatively easily accessible for clinical examination and sampling, which facilitates intravital diagnosis."

A new species of Ceratomyxa infecting the gallbladder of the marine ornamental fish Acanthurus xanthopterus collected from the Vizhinjam coast of Kerala is described. The parasite exhibited a prevalence of 100%. Mature spores recovered from the gallbladder were slightly crescentic with rounded lateral extremities and possessed convex anterior and slightly concave to straight posterior margins. Spore valves two, equal, joined by a straight and prominent suture. Myxospores measured 5.5 ± 0.6 μm in length and 15.9 ± 2.3 μm in thickness. Polar capsules two, equal, spherical, positioned anteriorly on either sides of the suture, 2.3 ± 0.2 μm long and 2.2 ± 0.2 μm wide. Polar filament with four to five coils, 21.2 ± 0.6 μm when extruded. Posterior angle 173.6 ± 5.2°. Early sporogonic stages and monosporic, disporic, and multisporic plasmodial stages were spherical to irregular in shape, with or without filopodia. Histopathologic analysis revealed that spores and developing stages were attached to the gallbladder wall as well as found free in the lumen. Morphologic and morphometric comparison of the present parasite with known species of Ceratomyxa indicated significant differences. In molecular and phylogenetic analyses, the present myxosporean revealed high divergence with related forms and occupied an independent position within the Ceratomyxa clade with high nodal support. Considering the morphological, morphometric, molecular, and phylogenetic dissimilarities with the previously described species of Ceratomyxa and the differences in host and geographic locations, the present species of myxosporean is treated as new and is named Ceratomyxa xanthopteri n. sp.

Background Tha Song Yang District, located on the Thai-Myanmar border, contributes to the second highest cases of amoebic dysentery due to intestinal parasitic infections (IPI). However, there were limited disease prevalence data, specific surveillance systems, and interventions available. Objective This study aimed to explore the epidemiological features of the IPIs and apply the One Health (OH) approach to solve IPI-related problems. Methods Prevalence of asymptomatic infections in human and animals, yearly symptomatic cases, and associated risk factors were investigated. The OH intervention included improving the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) of the community, microscopic diagnosis training, and stakeholder engagement for IPI prevention designs. Results The prevalence of asymptomatic cases was much higher than that of the symptomatic cases. Infective stages of the intestinal parasites were discovered in animal stool and water samples, indicating possible transmission routes. One year after the intervention, there were significant declines in asymptomatic IPIs and symptomatic cases of amoebic dysentery. Significant improvements in KAP and awareness regarding water and manure-waste management of the community were observed. Conclusion We reported the successful application of the OH intervention in reducing the IPI prevalence and mitigating disease-related risks. The intervention might be applied to address other infectious diseases in the future.

Significant numbers of parasites such as protozoa, helminths and arthropods infest equids. Various investigations have been conducted in Turkey to detect these parasites. In this review, all parasites reported in horses, donkeys and mules have been listed. A total of 62, 52 and 21 helminths were recorded in horses, donkeys and mules, respectively. As protozoan parasites, 13 species were detected both in horses and donkeys, and 3 in mules. With regard to arthropods, 40, 23 and 6 species were detected in horses, donkeys and mules, respectively. In the recent years, various molecular diagnostic methods have been developed and especially applied to the protozoan research area. Classical diagnostic methods were incapable of detecting certain protozoan parasites. Such protozoan parasites can be detected at the nucleic acid level with these new techniques. During the last quadranscentennial, a reduction has been recorded in the total number of equids in Turkey, whereby the breeding of sport horses is becoming an important issue. Thus, this review summarises the published research papers in Turkey in order to raise awareness among the animal owners and veterinarians in terms of the prevention of potential hazards resulting from parasitic infections/infestations in equids.Tek tırnaklı hayvanlarda protozoon, helmint ve artropod kökenli çok sayıda parazit bulunmaktadır. Türkiye’de bu parazitleri saptamaya yönelik çeşitli araştırmalar yapılmıştır. Bu derlemede, Türkiye’de tek tırnaklılar sınıfındaki at, eşek ve katırlarda bugüne kadar bildirilmiş parazitler bir arada sunulmuştur. Bildirilen toplam helmint sayısı atlarda 62, eşeklerde 52 ve katırlarda ise 21’dir. Protozon olarak atlarda 13, eşeklerde 13 ve katırlarda 3; artropodlar olarak ise atlarda 40, eşeklerde 23 ve katırlarda 6 tür parazit bulunmuştur. Son yıllarda moleküler tanı yöntemlerinin gelişmesi ve çeşitlenmesi ile, ülkemizde tek tırnaklılarda yürütülen özellikle protozoolojik çalışmalarda da bu yöntemler uygulanmıştır. Klasik tanı yöntemleri ile teşhisleri zor olan veya mümkün olmayan bazı protozoonların bu yöntemle nükleik asit düzeyinde teşhisleri yapılabilmiştir. Türkiye’de tek tırnaklı hayvan sayıları özellikle son çeyrek yüzyılda sürekli azalma eğiliminde olup, buna karşılık sportif atçılık ve yetiştiriciliği ise önem kazanmaya ve artmaya devam etmektedir. Bu derlemede, ülkemizdeki tek tırnaklı popülasyonun sağlığının korunmasında; paraziter enfeksiyonların/enfestasyonların potansiyel zararlarını önlemek/azaltmak için başta hayvan sahipleri ve veteriner hekimlerin bilgilendirilmesi ve bilinçlendirilmesine yönelik geçmişten bugüne kadar yapılmış akademik çalışmalar özetlenmiştir.

Commercial marine fishes caught locally in East Java, Indonesia, were examined for multivalvulid myxosporeans (Cnidaria: Myxozoa: Myxosporea). Plasmodia of Unicapsula pyramidata were detected in the trunk muscle of two fork-tailed threadfin breams (Nemipterus furcosus). Genetic comparisons of this sample to those collected in the Australian Coral Sea and South China Sea showed few nucleotide substitutions in the small subunit and large subunit ribosomal RNA gene (rDNA) with the species isolated in the Australian Coral Sea and South China Sea. Pseudocysts of two new Kudoa spp. with four shell valves and polar capsules were found in the trunk muscle of two shrimp scads Alepes djedaba and two flathead grey mullets Mugil cephalus. Kudoa javaensis n. sp. myxospores isolated from the shrimp scad were 5.1-7.2 (mean 6.2) μm thick, 6.2-7.9 (7.3) μm wide, and 4.6-6.3 (5.4) μm long, with polar capsules 1.9-2.5 (2.2) μm long and 1.1-1.4 (1.3) μm wide (n = 15). Kudoa surabayaensis n. sp. myxospores isolated from the flathead grey mullet were 5.8-6.7 (6.3) μm thick, 6.4-7.6 (6.9) μm wide, and 4.6-5.0 (4.7) μm long, with polar capsules 1.8-2.4 (2.1) μm long and 0.9-1.3 (1.1) μm wide (n = 25). These two Kudoa spp. showed critical differences in spore shapes (semiquadrate with unequal shell valves vs. equal shell valves), and absence vs. presence of uplifted shell valve termini. Nucleotide sequencing of rDNA supported the morphological differentiation of these two species. Furthermore, these two isolates were morphologically and phylogenetically distinct from any recorded Kudoa spp.

The myxozoan Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae is a widely spread endoparasite that causes proliferative kidney disease (PKD) in salmonid fish. We developed an in silico pipeline to separate transcripts of T. bryosalmonae from the kidney tissue of its natural vertebrate host, brown trout (Salmo trutta). After stringent filtering, we constructed a partial transcriptome assembly T. bryosalmonae, comprising 3427 transcripts. Based on homology-restricted searches of the assembled parasite transcriptome and Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) proteome, we identified four protein targets (Endoglycoceramidase, Legumain-like protease, Carbonic anhydrase 2, Pancreatic lipase-related protein 2) for the development of anti-parasitic drugs against T. bryosalmonae. Earlier work of these proteins on parasitic protists and helminths suggests that the identified anti-parasitic drug targets represent promising chemotherapeutic candidates also against T. bryosalmonae, and strengthen the view that the known inhibitors can be effective in evolutionarily distant organisms. In addition, we identified differentially expressed T. bryosalmonae genes between moderately and severely infected fish, indicating an increased abundance of T. bryosalmonae sporogonic stages in fish with low parasite load. In conclusion, this study paves the way for future genomic research in T. bryosalmonae and represents an important step towards the development of effective drugs against PKD.

Global climate change is altering the abundance and spread of various parasites, which has important consequences not only for host-parasite interactions but also for the relationships between different host species. Here, we focus on the myxozoan endoparasite Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae that causes temperature-dependent proliferative kidney disease (PKD) in salmonids. We characterized the temporal changes in the parasite load and the severity of PKD signs (renal hyperplasia, haematocrit) in two sympatric populations of wild brown trout (Salmo trutta) and Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). We found that both the parasite load and disease signs vary considerably between individuals, species, rivers and sampling periods. We showed that Atlantic salmon was able to slow down the initial parasite proliferation rate and subsequently tolerate high parasite burden without obvious disease signs. In contrast, the initial parasite proliferation rate was much higher in brown trout, which was followed by the development of severe PKD signs. Thus, the speed of parasite proliferation, rather than the absolute number of the parasites in the host kidney, may play an important role in interspecific variation in PKD susceptibility. To conclude, this study illustrates the usefulness of temporal perspective for understanding host defence mechanisms and climate change-mediated impacts in the wild.

During a survey of myxosporean parasites of marine fish in the coastal region of Vietnam, a species of the genus Henneguya (Myxosporea: Bivalvulida) was found in the gill of yellowfin seabream Acanthopagrus latus (Perciformes: Sparidae). White and oval cysts, measuring 145-220 μm in diameter, were detected in the gill lamellae of 4 of 15 fish examined (26.7%). Mature myxospores were elongate, with smooth valves, two similar polar capsules, and having the following dimensions: spore body length 9.9 ± 0.5 (8.9-12.5) μm, body width 6.7 ± 0.3 (6.1-7.6) μm, thickness 5.1 ± 0.2 (4.8-5.4) μm, caudal appendage length 10.0 ± 1 (8.3-11.6) μm, and total myxospore length 19.3 ± 1.4 (16.5-21.5) μm. The polar capsules were ovoid, measuring 3.2 ± 0.2 (2.8-3.9) μm long and 1.9 ± 0.2 (1.5-2.3) μm wide. Each polar capsule has a polar filament with 4-5 coils. Histological analysis revealed plasmodia in the connective tissues of the gill lamellae, but inflammation and deformation of the gills were not observed. In the phylogenetic tree reconstructed from the small subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU rDNA), sequences of the Henneguya specimens found in this study form a distinct branch. Morphological characteristics and molecular data identified a new species, namely Henneguya lata n. sp.

Antiparasitics acting on endo- or ectoparasites represent the second largest segment of the global animal health market, accounting for 23% of market share. However, relatively few novel antiparasitic agents have been introduced into the market during recent decades. One exception, and a groundbreaking 21st century success story, are the isoxazolines, whose full potential has not yet been entirely explored. Unfortunately, resistance issues are present across most parasitic diseases, which generates a clear market need for novel resistance-breaking antiparasitics with new modes/mechanisms of action. Recent advances in science and technologies strongly suggest that the time is right to invest in new modalities such as parasitic vaccines or in environmentally friendly interventions.

This study undertook the first investigation of malacosporean infections in Neotropical fish. We used polymerase chain reaction detection with a primer set generally targeting known malacosporeans to assay for infection in the kidney of 146 fish in 21 species belonging to 12 families collected from two areas in the Amazon Basin. Infections were found in 13 fish variously belonging to seven species in six families and included the first identification of a malacosporean infection in cartilaginous fish (a freshwater stingray). Based on ssrDNA, all infections represented a singleBuddenbrockiaspecies (Buddenbrockiasp. E) that demonstrates an exceptionally broad range of fish species infected, and countered our expectations of high Neotropical malacosporean diversity. Infections were characterized at varying and often high prevalences in fish species but sample sizes were small. Ascertaining whether highly divergent malacosporeans have not been detected by current primers, and more comprehensive sampling may reveal whether malacosporeans are truly as species poor in the Amazon Basin as present data suggest. Our results prompt speculations about evolutionary scenarios including introductionviamarine incursions and patterns of host use over time.

Immunity and parasites have been linked to the success of invasive species. Especially lower parasite burden in invasive populations has been suggested to enable a general downregulation of immune investment (Enemy Release and Evolution of Increased Competitive Ability Hypotheses). Simultaneously, keeping high immune competence towards potentially newly acquired parasites in the invasive range is essential to allow population growth. To investigate the variation of immune effectors of invasive species, we compared the mean and variance of multiple immune effectors in the context of parasite prevalence in an invasive and a native Egyptian goose (Alopochen aegyptiacus) population. Three of ten immune effectors measured showed higher variance in the invasive population. Mean levels were higher in the invasive population for three effectors but lower for eosinophil granulocytes. Parasite prevalence depended on the parasite taxa investigated. We suggest that variation of specific immune effectors, which may be important for invasion success, may lead to higher variance and enable invasive species to reduce the overall physiological cost of immunity while maintaining the ability to efficiently defend against novel parasites encountered.

Marine fish are a nutritious and high-value food commodity, but many wild-capture fisheries are in decline. Thus, marine fish culture is expected to expand greatly in coming years. Management of disease is a major problem in this industry, and metazoan parasites are among the most significant disease agents in terms of economic loss and animal welfare. Current methods for controlling metazoan parasites are mostly reactionary and rely on chemical treatment. Such methods are ultimately unsustainable. Here, we summarise the life cycles of marine metazoan parasites and how this knowledge can be used for nonchemical management and control. To aid the sustainable growth of marine fish culture, we advocate for a renewed research focus on the basic life history characteristics of parasites.

Parasitic infections in pigeons are very important due to their adaptability to different environmental conditions, as well as their relationship with human society. In this study, 250 samples of domestic and wild pigeons (Columba livia) were collected from different areas in Samawah, Al-Muthanna province, Iraq, from March 2020 to January 2021. Clinical examination of external parasites was conducted by screening fecal samples for intestinal parasitic infections and preparing direct swabs from the beaks. Out of the 250 pigeon samples (125 domestic and 125 wild pigeons), 65 pigeons were found infected (26%), including 40 domestic (32%) and 25 wild pigeons (20%) (P≤0.05). The results showed that these parasitic infections belong to three major groups of bird parasites: 1) Protozoa, such as Eimeria species (spp.) oocyst, Cryptosporidium spp., and Trichomonas gallinae, with prevalence rates of 21 (16.8%), 14 (11.2%), 19 (15.2%), 11(8.8%), 7 (5.6%), and 2 (1.6%), 2) Helminths, such as cestodes (Raillietina tetragona) and nematodes (Ascaridia columbae) with prevalence rates of 5 (4%), 4 (3.2%), 4 (3.2%), and 2 (1.6%), as well as Arthropods, including lice (Menacanthus stramineus) with prevalence rates of 5 (4%) and 3 (2.4%) in domestic and wild pigeons, respectively. Additionally, no significant difference was found between male and female pigeons in their infection rate (P≤0.05). The findings also revealed that the highest percentage of infection in both genders of domestic and wild pigeons was caused by one spp. of parasites (62.5% and 64% in domestic and wild pigeons, respectively), followed by two spp. (24% and 27.5% in domestic and wild pigeons, respectively), and three spp. of parasites (10% and 12% in domestic and wild pigeons, respectively). However, there was no significant difference between domestic and wild pigeons regarding their infections with one, two, or three spp. of parasites (P≤0.05). It is thus concluded that differences in the prevalence of these parasites in different regions are partly due to differences in nutrition, feeding habits, and geographical environment.

Infections caused by multivalvulid myxosporeans belonging to genera Unicapsula and Kudoa (Cnidaria: Myxozoa) occasionally affect commercial marine fish species. Postmortem myoliquefaction caused by a variety of Kudoa spp., including K. thyrsites, and unsightly cyst or pseudocyst formation, caused by K. amamiensis, U. muscularis, and other kudoid species, negatively affect commercial values of fillets. However, multivalvulid infections are often latent and imperceptible in the market. Biodiversity, host range, and epidemiology remain to be explored. Here, myxosporean infection was detected in four commercial fish species from southern China, using morphological and molecular analyses. Three Unicapsula spp. (U. pyramidata in Nemipterus japonicus; U. pflugfelderi in Dentex angolensis transported from the Eastern Central Atlantic Ocean, off West African coast; and U. aequilobata in Decapterus macarellus) and Kudoa megacapsula in Nemipterus virgatus were observed to form pseudocysts in the myofibers of the host trunk muscles. All fish hosts identified here, except for U. pyramidata, are new records. Kudoa megacapsula was morphologically characterized by gigantic, cruciform myxospores with four wing-like shell valves morphologically comparable to previous Japanese records of the same species in aquaculture facilities, acquiring fly from China or Korea (Sphyraena pinguis and Seriola quinqueradiata, respectively). Molecular analyses established the conspecificity of the present Chinese isolate with previously recorded Japanese isolates. To our knowledge, for the first time, a partial large subunit ribosomal RNA gene sequence of K. megacapsula was obtained, showing close phylogenetic relationships with Kudoa spp. harboring cruciform myxospores, such as K. thyrsites, K. gunterae, K. whippsi, and K. lateolabracis.

Myxozoans are economically important group of metazoan parasites, which can cause diseases in a large variety of commercially important fishes. Increased knowledge on molecular features has shown that traditional descriptive characters may be misleading. Combination of both descriptive and molecular features is therefore necessary for an integrated taxonomic assessment.Cyprinid Labeo batesii, sampled in the Makombè River at Nkondjock in Cameroon were examined for myxosporeans. Identification of parasite species was based on morphological and molecular sequence analyses of myxospores. Phylogenetic analysis was performed using maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian inference (BI) methods.The scales of L. batesii were infected by Myxobolus nkondjockei sp. nov Their mature myxospores are ovoid in frontal view and lenticular in lateral view, with two rounded ends. These myxospores measured 10.3 (10-10.9) μm length and 8.0 (7.3-8.5) μm width. Myxospores have two ovoid and equal sizes polar capsules. They measured 4.5 (4.0-5.0) µm in length and 2.4 (2-2.9) µm in width. Polar tubules were coiled in 4-5 turns perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the polar capsules. Phylogenetic analysis of the 18S rDNA sequence show clustering of M. nkondjockei sp. n. close to an undetermined species Myxobolus sp. reported infecting gill lamellas of Labeo rohita from India.The morphological, molecular and phylogenetic data provided for M. nkondjockei sp. n. are solid basis for further identification of this myxozoan of which pathogenicity probably plays an economic role at culturing the hosts.

An abundance of morphologically variable Henneguya species complicates the understanding of disease relationships between ictalurid catfish and myxozoan (Phylum: Cnidaria) parasites on North American aquaculture operations. Henneguya ictaluri, the cause of proliferative gill disease (PGD) in channel and hybrid catfish, is arguably the most important parasite of commercial catfish aquaculture in the southeastern United States. While research indicates arrested development and limited sporogenesis of H. ictaluri in channel (Ictalurus punctatus) × blue (Ictalurus furcatus) hybrid catfish, incidents of PGD persist in hybrid production systems. This work investigated the influence of fish host on myxozoan community composition and diversity within naturally infected gill tissues from diagnostic case submissions to the Aquatic Research and Diagnostic Laboratory in Stoneville, Mississippi, from 2017 to 2019. Gills collected from farm-raised catfish with clinical PGD were subjected to metagenomic amplicon sequencing of the myxozoan 18S SSU rDNA gene diagnostic variable region 3 (DVR3). Myxozoan community composition significantly differed between channel and hybrid catfish PGD cases, with channel catfish having more diverse community structures. Channel catfish gills had a greater relative abundance of H. ictaluri in 2017 and 2019, while no differences were observed in 2018. Importantly, H. ictaluri was present in all channel and hybrid catfish PGD cases across all years; however, H. ictaluri was not the most abundant myxozoan in almost half the cases examined, suggesting other myxozoan species may also contribute to PGD pathology. The detection of numerous known and unclassified myxozoan sequences in addition to H. ictaluri provides evidence PGD may involve mixed species infections. Furthermore, the presence of numerous unclassified myxozoan sequences in gill samples from clinical PGD cases indicates the number of described species from U.S. farm-raised catfish vastly underestimates the true myxozoan diversity present within the varied pond microcosms associated with catfish aquaculture.
