Ubuntu has launched the Global Agenda for Social Work and Social Development, 2020–2030. This commentary stipulates how ubuntu can reinforce the Pachamama rights and its significance to social work practice. The African philosophy of ubuntu has potential to enhance the framework of understanding environmental rights from an eco-spiritual social work perspective and integrating the concepts of Pachamama rights. Clearly showing the link between Pachamama and ubuntu, this paper reminds social workers to advance the Rights of Nature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article considers the methodological limits and possibilities of a cultural turn in comparative religious ethics by "translating" the Latin American Indigenous meanings of buen vivir (living well), a subsistent mode of interdependent flourishing resistant to Western models of extractive development amid the Anthropocene. It problematizes the methodological challenge of translating Indigenous cultures from within a Western colonial political economy that has historically relegated Indigenous Americans to the primitive level of savage inferiority according to a stadial theory of socioeconomic development. However, constructive methodological options for translating Indigenous cultures emerge from the Journal of Religious Ethics's existing conversations about comparative religious ethics. On the one hand, recent critical anthropology and ethnography, abetted by intellectual history, provide tools for ethicists in the recovery of Indigenous critiques and meanings against longstanding Western cultural patterns. On the other hand, nativizing the concept of the religious classic thematizes the normative dimensions of Indigenous cultures, demonstrating how the translation of buen vivir points to intercultural dialogue rather than cooptation and manipulation.

This article analyzes the process of patrimonialization of the Pachamama in Jujuy, between the mid-1990s and the present. Through the analysis of laws, journalistic documents and ethnographic observations, it is shown how the Pachamama was characterized as an object and a religious and cultural practice typical of the Andean world, while progressively signifying as "nature" in a modern sense. Based on an analysis that reconstructs the practices, procedures, acts and regulations promoted by the provincial state of Jujuy through which Pachamama was patrimonialized, it is shown how this process was articulated with the deepening of a regional economic model sustained in extractivism in indigenous territories, and with a neo-developmentalist imaginary in which Pachamama was placed as a "guarantor" of the model carried out by the government from greenwashing speeches.

The 2015 Paris Agreement, complementing the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, showcases an impressive consensus on climatological rhetoric. Thereby, it will contribute certainly neither to achieving its overall objectives on temperature nor to redressing any of the resulting “loss [or] damage” yet possibly tocontinuing the worldwide dialogue on the environment or on ecological entitlements. This paper will dissect and categorize these. It will conclude that the framers essentially kept the conversation going, nationally and internationally, encouraging the establishment, the adjudicatory branch, and the public to resume the conceptual or practical advancement on the topic.

At the beginning of XXI century, there was a tendency towards the active implementation of the neoextractive paradigm in the economy of Latin American states, which was due to the existing“consensus of the commodities”. This term is interpreted by researchers as an economic, political and ideological order, which is based on the high demand for commodities in international markets. Despite impressive successes in filling up national reserves with funds received from the extractive industries, new forms of inequality and potential conflicts began to arise in Latin American society. The costs of the current model predetermined not only appeal to environmental discourse, but also to increasing of its supporters that allows them to outline their demands on the political landscape.

The purpose of this article is to understand, from the perspective of the Bolivian Aymara identity of Bolivia, the intrinsic relation these persons have with Nature. This task is developed through the study of what they call Pachamama (sacred Mother Earth), which is part of their identity as an ‘all interrelated whole, the Suma Qamaña or Good Living’, and which can be considered a non-Western epistemology. Their worldview breaks with the Western (anthropocentric) conception of environment that informs European and Anglo-Saxon continental law, and that is currently predominant in international standards of reference. Proponents of this perspective achieved a transformation in the international treatment of Nature, recognised by the United Nations (Resolution 63/278 of 2009, promoted by the Bolivian State), gaining inspiration from the inclusion by Ecuador of Pacha Mama (Nature) as a subject of rights in its constitution (2008).

Based on a broad fieldwork in the Bolivian Andes, the aim of this article is to analyse the concept of the body as a hydraulic system, and more especially the drunken body. The latter is considered a vessel where bodily humours as well as ingested beverages circulate. To allow these liquids to enter and drain away, the body must open itself, a dangerous act since it provides demons with the chance to penetrate it. Nevertheless, it may be assumed that, at the same time, this opening furthers a chain of reciprocity with the dead as well as non‐human entities. In this context, the drinker places himself in an interaction with the social world but also creates a sacrificial relationship with the sacred world. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This paper, written in the form of an essay, intends to argue in favor of safeguarding ancestral knowledge for planetary education. Throughout this writing, we return to Pachamama with the intention of trying to recognize more of its omnipresence in our daily lives, although what we have is its essence that is neglected by our contemporary project of humanity. The return to the cosmovision seems necessary for us to (re)think not only the future of planetary life, but also the existence of life in the present time, lived in here and now. Who knows the understanding that we are not separate from nature, but we are one with Mother Earth is not a possible path to another existence?, Este artículo, escrito en forma de ensayo, pretende argumentar a favor de salvaguardar los saberes ancestrales para la educación planetaria. - Abstract
In the summer of 2020, contemporary artist Tomás Saraceno installed Aerocene Pacha in Salinas Grandes (puna of Argentina). The project, inspired by the andean cosmovision and the debates around the Anthropocene, was conceived as a multidisciplinary and cooperative experience that involved the participation of artists, engineers, aeronauts, sociologists and the communities of the Table of the Salinas Grandes Basin and Lagoon of Guayatayoc. In this article, I will consider the cosmoterritorial relations that emerged as a result of the realization of Aerocene Pacha, focusing on those that the artist established with the communities of San Miguel de Colorados, Pozo Colorado and Santuario de Tres Pozos. My proposal is that although Saraceno adopted the andean concept of Pachamama and his work was characterized by a strong dialogue with the aboriginal communities, the senses, values and practices that his work mobilized in each of them were different. I will show that the connection that the artist stimulated between the two pachas can be conceptualized as an equivocation. While the pacha of Aerocene is based on the principle of the commons, the pacha of the communities is part of ecology of beings and practices that assume desire and secure the non-common., En el verano de 2020 el artista contemporáneo Tomás Saraceno montó Aerocene Pacha en Salinas Grandes (puna de Argentina).

It is based on the ethnographic analysis of the experiences of two Diaguita peoples, Los Chuschagasta and Tolombón (Choromoro Valley, Tucumán, and northwestern Argentina) in the framework of territorial conflicts during the last ten years. The article focuses specially on the practices and experiences of offerings and celebrations to the Pachamama/Mother Earth, considering these territorial events and, the territory itself, as political, performative places and excesses where permanence and belonging to the territory are settled, rather than a static, essentialist and folkloric interpretation. In this sense, the offerings and ceremonies to the Pachamama make up territorial practices that, in the identity-cultural framework, claim processes and conflicts, drive and update the political project of territorial defense. The offerings constitute uses of the territory, spiritual moments, encounters with the ancestors, which are far from the way in which the hegemonic power, both from the state and |private, conceives them. Finally, it is expected to contribute to the analysis that relocates these other places of enunciation, which includes non-human entities, as surpluses of the multiculturalist indigenous policy with its logics and languages of tolerance.

The purpose of this article is to understand, from the perspective of the Bolivian Aymara identity of Bolivia, the intrinsic relation these persons have with Nature. This task is developed through the study of what they call Pachamama (sacred Mother Earth), which is part of their identity as an 'all interrelated whole, the Suma Qamaña or Good Living', and which can be considered a non-Western epistemology.

I tot. [EN] When textures speak... The approach of the brief study of the European tsunami in the territories now known as Latin America has had, and has much to do with what we now call Ecuadorian contemporary art. Hunting in this neat historical mosaic, emerging from different cultures in different stages, the return to the references of the Pre-Columbian past become evident. The allusion to ancestry in artistic practice with Nature as a central element during the last century and, more assiduously in the last decades of the 21st century, is undoubtedly the paradigm of the homogeneous, coherent vision that has emerged in various disciplines and in the different Latin America countries. With an artistic assessment of a plural, dynamic nature, guided by the concept of recovering the land in order to have it all. And everything. It involves our trees and our elders who fully know the names of the species that live in their territories. To carry out a study on natural textures in the Amazon, which has been given a good management of its resources through art. In this way, we have tried to investigate behind each installation to interpret the needs that led pre-Columbian artists to choose it, and to what extent it is allowed to make use of it and how they integrated it to an audience, or to make their own, genuine discourse; where the global identity of an art in accordance with Nature and the human being is captured. It is undeniable, seeable, its articulation of those globalising aesthetic mechanisms in which a contemporary Ecuadorian cultural industry is developing. The authenticity of today's renovating artistic discourses are the foundations of a new history: overflowing, malleable, revisionist and questioning. They go hand in hand with the voices of the experts on global warming. And, in our research, textures have the floor... I also hope that my angle of approach to the Amazon and its textures will lead to other perspectives...

All legal systems by now must confront the issue of environmental protection. The scope of this paper is to analyse the Ecuadorian approach, considering that it is the only legal system which, so far, has constitutionalized the rights of Nature, thus allowing a change in the status of Nature, from object to subject of law, overcoming the traditional approach of Western environmental law. The paper also aims to show how the theme of the rights of Nature offers a valuable opportunity for intercultural dialogue, and how the Ecuadorian experience represents, in this sense, a perfect mix between Western legal notions, such as damage, protection, or representation, and the ancestral knowledge of the indigenous peoples as the ones concerning Pachamama or the concept of Sumak Kawsay, thus linking the (unavoidable) anthropocentrism of law, with the biocentrism.

Focusing on contemporary Bolivia, this article examines promises and pitfalls of political and legal initiatives that have turned Pachamama into a subject of rights. The conferral of rights on the indigenous earth being had the potential to unsettle the Western ontological distinction between active human subjects who engage in politics and passive natural resources. This essay, however, highlights some paradoxical effects of the rights of nature in Bolivia, where Evo Morales’ model of development relies on the intensification of the export-oriented extractive economy. Through the analysis of a range of texts, including paintings, legal documents, political speeches and activist interventions, I consider the equivocation between the normatively gendered Mother Earth that the state recognises as the subject of rights, and the figure of Pachamama evoked by feminist and indigenous activists. Pachamama, I suggest, has been incorporated into the Bolivian state as a being whose generative capacities have been translated into a rigid gender binary. As a gendered subject of rights, Pachamama/Mother Earth is exposed to governmental strategies that ultimately increase its subordination to state power. The concluding remarks foreground the import of feminist perspectives in yielding insights concerning political ontological conflicts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the context of the Anthropocene crises, I address the onto-epistemic challenges to the establishment of non-strictly utilitarian relations with nature. The dualist ontology - which limited it to a resource - justifies its destruction by economic development, a common good determined by the State. This imposition integrates not only environmental but also ontological conflicts. The modern world, which claims the right to be unique, has waged a war against ontologies that do not operate through the separation of humans and other-than-humans. In resistance, relational worlds challenge the monopoly of defining what is the common good and what, in its name, can be sacrificed. Taking as a basis and as a starting point the constitutionalized experience in Ecuador, which guaranteed their own and unconditional rights to nature and Pachamama, I argue that, although these entities have been included in the law as synonyms, they are not or may not be the same. Taking into account the possibility of the existence of radical differences, in cosmopolitical terms, is a bet that dissident practices can negotiate alternative commons, in alliance for other possible world. I divide this thesis into two parts that can be read independently. In the first one, because the analyzes of the Constitution of Ecuador place it as an expression of a transition from anthropocentrism to biocentrism or ecocentrism, I try to explain what these descriptions presuppose and imply. The Second Part is dedicated to the political precedents that contributed to the arrival of Pachamama in the Constitution and the equivocations that can emerge from the dialogue between different perspectives, understood as ontologies or worlds.

Earth jurisprudence represents an alternative approach to the law based on the belief that nature has rights. In this view, a river has the right to flow, species have the right to continue to exist in the wild, and ecosystems have the right to adapt and evolve over time. Proponents of Earth jurisprudence argue that, by treating nature as exploitable resources, contemporary legal systems actively promote environmental harms. Recognising rights of nature, they argue, will transform core values and inspire social changes that promote economic development which respects nature's limits. Since 2006, rights of nature have been recognised by some sub-federal public bodies in the United States and by the governments of Ecuador and Bolivia. This paper sets out to answer two questions. First, what explains the legal recognition of rights of nature in Ecuador and Bolivia? Second, what factors impede a wider adoption and implementation of Earth jurisprudence? Amongst the constraints, it will be argued, is that Ecuador and Bolivia continue to pursue an extractivist economic development model, with assertions of national sovereignty over natural resources tending to prevail over Earth jurisprudence and environmental conservation. Bio-patents contribute to the privatization of the living and their exclusion from the commons, and thus reproduce and update colonial mechanisms in the governance of natural resources. Two current alternatives to the biopatentes systems are analized: the logic of open and free access to resources and the concept of environment as common heritage of mankind.

This book review analyzes Visa Kurki’s innovative theoretical construction of the legal person and compares it with how the concept is used in two Andean countries: Bolivia and Ecuador. Kurki offers an alternative view of the fundamental considerations regarding the legal person, a view mostly based on the work of W. N. Hohfeld. This review first highlights the key points in Kurki’s theory and then examines a possible challenge to his scheme through the legal systems of Bolivia and Ecuador, both of which recognize non-sentient beings as legal persons. When the concept of Pachamama (Mother Earth) is defined as a starting point, a whole new plethora of legal persons emerge (rivers, trees, lakes, etc.). This extremely radical view aims to rescue ways of life quite different than Western ones and to provide the population with robust mechanisms for the protection of Pachamama. It is also a theoretical “counter-offer” to Kurki’s view of personhood.

The Pachamama Plateau (Azuay, Ecuador) is an area of great archaeological interest, as it contains evidence regarding the specific activities of pre-Hispanic cultures in the region. This article is an initial approach to the characterization of textile-making activity in the area based on artifacts such as spindle whorls, camelid mandibles, and corrals, in order to provide new historical knowledge about southern Ecuador. The study area is a favorable environment for the development of flora and fauna, as it contains permanent water resources across the extent of plateau. This environmental scenario was similar during periods of past occupations of the Pachamama Plateau, where terraces and roads were built to connect different areas, constituting a road network.
