Does nature still matter in sport? In the balancing between natural and scientific training, Swedish upper-secondary ski schools have played an important role. This paper deals with specific landscape features for testing at three Swedish ski schools: Hallstatestet in Sollefteå, Hovfjällsracet in Torsby, and Stoltjonastestet in Järpen. The following questions will be addressed: How do the coaches at each school use local tests to analyze performance? How is the importance of local tests articulated, and what roles do history and nature play in this process? The paper concludes that the use of local landscapes to articulate elite performance connects ideas of measurability and scientization to the lingering tradition of natural training. Local landscapes thereby become a mediator between scientific and experiential knowledge about sport performance and point out how local sport heritage can be used for addressing environmental issues in sport. The article discusses the potential of hiking as a means to promote equity in physical activity engagement across diverse populations. It highlights the barriers that underserved populations face in accessing physical activity opportunities and emphasizes the need for affordable and accessible options. The authors argue that hiking, as a form of "green exercise," can provide numerous health benefits and address some of the barriers to physical activity. They suggest that with support from local municipalities and health providers, it is feasible to provide equitable opportunities for individuals to engage in hiking and receive its health-promoting benefits. A special connection between people and their environment is legally recognized in Norway as Allemannsretten, the right to enjoy a large part of Norwegian nature. Scholarship on leisure mobility, spatial planning, and transport geography recognizes the intrinsic value of this spatial connection. As people travel for outdoor recreation, equitable access to recreation is a goal for just transport systems and must be achieved as these systems are digitalized and electrified for low-carbon transitions. The aim of the article is to identify the impact of transportation accessibility on outdoor recreation habits in the Greater Stavanger Region, Norway’s third-largest metropolitan region. With car-centric development since the 1970s and ambitious automobility-reduction targets, transportation accessibility for outdoor recreation is a key indicator of challenges to overcome in mobility transitions, yet features marginally in public debate. In focusing on popular outdoor day trips and based on multisited interviews with both car owners and non-owners, the authors identify oversights in accessibility, spatializing the issue of local destinations in relation to urban transport transition. They conclude that policymakers must address specific gaps to make transport systems desirable and inclusive, and that a spatial lens can be used to problematize and advance just low-carbon transitions. Visitor education plays a crucial role in the knowledge diffusion process in outdoor recreation and nature-based tourism. It entails sharing information, experiences, and insights with visitors to enhance their understanding and appreciation of the natural environment. Our methodology for investigating the diffusion of ecological civilization knowledge in tourism destinations involves constructing a knowledge diffusion network model. In this model, scenic spots, tourists, and the public are defined as network nodes, with the communication channels between them representing the edges of the network. By constructing a scale-free complex network, the knowledge diffusion mode of scenic spots can be depicted. The layer of resource supply node consists of different scenic spots, forming the core nodes set for knowledge diffusion in the tourism industry. This research aims to further explore the social and economic value of the tourism areas' ecological civilization knowledge diffusion, as well as analyze the path, quantity, and cost of knowledge diffusion. by analyzing this knowledge diffusion network model, insights into the effectiveness and impact of visitor education in promoting ecological civilization and sustainable practices in tourism destinations can be gained. This study aimed to describe the gender roles of people interested in an exercise program done on outdoor exercise structures and test if gender roles were associated with studied outcomes. Older adults aged 65+ who were not currently performing resistance training were invited to participate. Gender roles were quantified using the Bem Sex Role Inventory 30-item questionnaire (−60 [feminine] to +60 [masculine]). Outcomes included completing the 6-week intervention (Y/N) and changes in physical function (one leg stance, 30-s chair stand), strength (predicted maximal chest press and leg press, grip strength), power (knee extensor power), and overall health via the SF-36 questionnaire. Twenty-nine adults (65.5% female; median 72 years old) participated in the study, and 17 completed the intervention (58.6%). The median (interquartile) gender role score was −13.0 (−19.5 to −8.5), with no gender role difference (p =.62) between completers and non-completers. These results suggest that older adults interested in such a program portray themselves as more feminine. No association was found between gender role scores and changes in any study outcomes. In this setting, gender roles did not seem to impact the study outcomes and therefore may not need to be considered when designing an outdoor exercise structure program. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Behavior change campaigns are crucial in combatting illegal wildlife trade (IWT) by reducing demand, but assessing their impact requires robust strategies. The Behavior‐Centered Theory of Change (BC‐ToC) integrates Theory of Change frameworks with decision‐making models to design and evaluate interventions using behavioral and progress indicators. We used BC‐ToC to design two behavioral change interventions aimed at reducing demand for two threatened Venezuelan bird species: the Yellow‐shouldered Amazon (YSA) and the Red Siskin (RS). We developed workshops to engage community organizations and conservationists to identify audience groups, evaluate alternative behaviors considering impact and benefits, and define behavior‐based indicators for monitoring change. For YSA, two audience groups with similar demand motivations emerged: "common folks" (women, 20–70 yo, low education) and "young professionals" (20–30 yo, educated). Enjoying parrots through outdoor activities emerged as an alternative. For RS, the main audience segments were the breeder groups "South American node" (Venezuelan and Brazilian) and "Iberian node" (Spaniels and Portuguese). Iberian with wider age range (30–60 yo) and greater education than South American. Adopting responsible sourcing practices surfaced as the alternative behavior. We described behavioral levers, intermediary outputs, and indicators reflecting changes in knowledge, attitudes, norms, and control. We discussed challenges for adoption, emphasizing systemic barriers and the role of regulations, and provided ground‐tailored strategies for effective behavioral interventions. Taoism is the only indigenous Chinese religion and one of the most important ideological traditions that have a significant influence on leisure. Current Taoist leisure research mainly focuses on philosophical Taoism, an offshoot of the 'real Taoism'. This paper will take philosophical Taoism and religious Taoism as a cultural whole and conduct a comprehensive, in-depth study of Taoist leisure, by paying more attention to its religious dimension, which is very esoteric, characteristic, and more of the essence of Taoism but rarely investigated before. We will explore Taoist leisure from the perspectives of philosophical bases, leisure concepts, pharmaceutical and life cultivation (i.e. alchemy, regimens), outdoor activities (i.e. seclusion, festivals, liturgy, travel) and its art practices (i.e. literature, paintings, music). In North America, polar bears (Ursus maritimus), grizzly bears (U. arctos), and American black bears (U. americanus) occasionally injure or kill humans. Although bear-inflicted human injuries are uncommon, they generate media attention that can lead to fear and unreasonable perceptions of the risk of bear attacks. Information on the behavioral responses of grizzly and black bears during interactions with people can provide a factual basis regarding the risks associated with recreating in bear habitats and assist land managers in developing and prioritizing bear safety messages. To address those objectives, we collected 17,171 reports of grizzly and black bear reaction behavior during interactions with people in Yellowstone National Park, USA, between 1991 and 2022. We used Bayesian Multinomial Logistic Regression models to examine the odds of attack, agitation and/or warning, flight, or curious behavioral reactions versus neutral responses in bear–human interactions. We found that reaction behavior depended on both the species involved and the location of the interaction. In developed areas and along roadsides, neutral responses were most likely for both species. On front-country trails, odds of curious or flee reactions were greater than neutral responses for both species. The odds of agitation and/or warning reactions from grizzlies were also greater in this setting. In backcountry campsites, there were marginally higher odds of black bears attacking; whereas, grizzlies had marginally higher odds of attacking during off-trail backcountry interactions. Although bear attacks were uncommon in all locations, grizzlies were ∼3.9× more likely than black bears to injure people in backcountry areas. Bear interactions with people were generally predictable; grizzly and black bears exhibited neutral behaviors or fled during most interactions. Curious approaches, agitation and/or warning behaviors, physical contact, and attacks were uncommon. Safety messages encouraging calm, confident responses during bear–human interactions are warranted, and may have better efficacy than those that generate fear and apprehension. For older adults and people with disabilities, it can be difficult to participate in recreation due to inaccessible nature. This can lead to exclusion when it comes to outdoor experiences and health. Nature-based solutions for quality of life are hence essential. Through semi-structured interviews with Swedish municipal and county representatives, and representatives of interest organizations for people with physical disabilities, we identify challenges in the planning and management of the recreational landscape in relation to accessibility and participation. This study is based on the means-end chain theory and adopts the laddering interview method to understand the customer's perceived value of glamping. The means-end chain theory links attributes, consequences, and values, which can help uncover interviewees' honest opinions and ultimate values they sought in glamping. A total of 40 individuals who had not previously experienced glamping were interviewed. In-depth interviews were conducted following the one-on-one ladder-style format. The results reveal that the interviewees mainly focus on the 'hardware and equipment' aspect of glamping. Moreover, the aspect that interviewees associated closest with glamping was 'comfortable accommodation.' During the COVID-19 pandemic, these interviewees were focused on improving 'their sense of well-being' and 'enjoyment of life.' Hence, the study analysis and its discussion from the management perspective can be applied to camping-related businesses. The aim of the study was to explore attitudes towards climate change among wilderness seekers. The subjects were 273 (M = 23.15, SD = 7.72) adults. These included: 189 women, 80 men and 4 people who identified as non-binary. The respondents completed four questionnaires: Wilderness Novelty Seeking Scale, Wilderness Self-Efficacy Sale, Wilderness Courage Scale, and Attitude Towards Climate Changes Scale. There were three distinct profiles of the respondents: Curious, who are interested in the wilderness but lack the skills and courage to explore dangerous wilderness places; Adventurous, who actively seek experiences in dangerous wilderness places and have survival skills; and Indifferent, who have little interest in the wilderness. The participants in these profiles differed in terms of attitude toward climate change. The Curious and Adventurous groups were significantly more concerned about climate change. In addition, they were more likely to believe that climate change is already having a negative impact on the lives of people in the places where they live. Furthermore, The Curious group felt less positive about climate change than the Adventurous group. They also felt more negative about it. Finally, wilderness seekers (Curious and Adventurous) were statistically more likely to engage in pro-environmental behaviors in the context of climate change compared to the Indifferent group. Wildlife viewing is growing in popularity, especially among Black, Indigenous and people of colour (BIPOC), whose participation has increased dramatically in the last 20 years. We used a nationwide sample of wildlife viewers to examine how identity as a wildlife viewer, the importance of wildlife viewing to one's life, ethnoracial identity and social support influenced the degree of participation in wildlife viewing.We examined data as part of a non‐probabilistic online survey of wildlife viewers (n = 17,104). We were particularly interested in how participation, support, the importance of wildlife viewing, and identity as wildlife viewers varied across ethnoracial groups. Support has been found to influence involvement in various activities, while identity and importance have been shown to drive continued participation, suggesting that these factors may be of great value for encouraging and sustaining behaviour.We found that, compared with White groups, multiple ethnoracial groups identified less as wildlife viewers. However, they indicated that wildlife viewing is more important to their lives. We also found that most ethnoracial groups received more support from friends, family, mentors and peers than White viewers.This research can help understand the participation of Black, Indigenous and people of colour in outdoor recreation. Furthermore, this work demonstrates how legacies of racially motivated discriminatory policies may limit participation among ethnoracially diverse communities. School connectedness is important for students' current and future outcomes but may decline in the middle school years. This mixed methods study investigated the impact of a school garden project on 6th-graders' school connectedness. Surveys were completed by 46 middle school students at the beginning and end of a garden unit. In addition, individual interviews were conducted with 25 participants. Quantitative findings indicated that most participants had some gardening experience at home and enjoyed being part of the garden at school. However, pre-post results did not show increased connectedness following the garden unit, as connectedness ratings were moderately high both before and after the garden unit. Analysis of student interviews found that the garden project facilitated home-school, student-student, and student-teacher connections. Qualitative results also highlighted the garden as a context for engagement as students shared what they were learning and doing in the garden, the choices and autonomy they experienced there, and their anticipation of upcoming activities. Finally, interviews documented students' enjoyment of the school garden through their expression of positive emotion and appreciation for the outdoor setting and activities, which students described as stress-relieving and a valued break from traditional schooling. Disability is often overlooked in discussions of green exercise. Consequently, we still know little about how ableist ideologies might play out in the context of nature engagement, or the forms of pleasure that disabled people derive from participation in green spaces. In this paper, we address this gap in the literature by exploring the relationship between electric mountain biking and disability in England (UK). Adopting the work of Bernard Stiegler, we highlight the superficiality of existing ideologies of nature, analyse the myriad ways that e‐mountain bikes can challenge ableist attitudes towards outdoor recreation, and explore the freedoms and constraints that accompany the assemblages between e‐mountain bikes and ‘disabled’ bodies. Drawing on data from 20 online interviews, we highlight the social contexts and interactions that shape technological choices, adaptations, and outcomes within the disabled e‐mountain bike community. Our analysis reveals that, while e‐mountain bikes are stigmatised in green spaces, the enhanced level of social interaction that is afforded by the presence of such technology allows participants to de‐emphasise their perceived physical inadequacy and, instead, focus on promoting a more empowering image of the socio‐technical disabled body that is active, capable and self‐determined. Background: Toddler physical activity is critical for child health, but little is known about its applications in early childhood education (ECE) centers. The aims of this study were 1) to determine if pragmatic and nature-based modifications to an ECE center's outdoor setting were feasible and acceptable, and 2) to identify barriers and facilitators of toddler physical activity at ECE centers. Methods: A multiphase mixed-methods study (QUANT+QUAL) was conducted. In the QUANT study, a stepped, sequential modification of the outdoor setting, using pragmatic and cost-effective nature-based elements, was conducted with a delayed control group over 10-weeks, with follow-up assessments 3-months later (week-20). Five elements (tree cookies, garden, teacher training, playground stencils, and nature table) were introduced individually. Feasibility was assessed using teacher surveys. Acceptability and engagement were assessed by direct observation of toddler use of outdoor elements. Accelerometers were used to assess toddlers' physical activity during outdoor sessions. The QUAL study included semi-structured interviews from ECE center directors (n = 27, 55.6% African American, 92.5% female) that were analyzed using content analysis for themes related to 1) toddler physical activity, 2) barriers and facilitators to toddler outdoor environment changes, 3) perspectives on nature-based elements, and 4) provider training. Member check focus groups (n = 2, 7-10/group) were conducted for additional interpretation. All three sources were reviewed for integration. Results: Toddlers engaged in physical activity for most of the outdoor sessions (>85%). This limited the effect of the intervention, but aligned with directors' and members' sentiments that toddlers were already quite active. Across directors, reported barriers to toddler outdoor environment changes were teacher turnover and finances. All nature-based elements, except the stencils, were feasible and acceptable, even at week-20. Directors and members identified additional age-appropriate elements, and desired pragmatic training with technical assistance and funding to implement these changes. Directors and members also desired a curriculum that could be used outdoors. Conclusions: Nature-based elements were feasible and acceptable to toddlers. Directors were enthusiastic about nature-based elements, but barriers exist in linking directors with these elements. As the demand for adventure tourism in national parks increases, the number of adventure tour operators also increases, and the debate regarding their presence in national parks ensues. This paper focuses on the operators' interpretation of adventure tourism in New South Wales (NSW) national parks, and explores why the operators have particular perspectives on adventure tourism in national parks. This paper draws on identity theory as a foundation for exploring the operators' perspectives. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 24 adventure tour operators based in four NSW national parks. Based on the interview data, this study found the operators played a variety of roles in the operation of adventure tourism business in national parks, such as escape facilitators and stewards of the natural environment. Background: The new P-STEP® (Personalised Space Technology Exercise Platform) app is designed to bring together tailored exercise guidance and up-to-date air quality information. The app allows individuals to plan outdoor exercise walking routes while minimising their exposure to air pollution. Individuals with chronic long-term conditions, particularly respiratory and cardiovascular conditions, can use the app in order to minimise the risk of their symptoms being exacerbated by pollution, while still gaining the benefits of outdoor exercise. Methods: This study will measure the usability and acceptability of the P-STEP® app. The study will take the form of a single-arm 12-week app pilot study based in Leicestershire, United Kingdom (UK). We will recruit a maximum of 380 participants from an existing cohort study to pilot the app for 12 weeks. Questionnaire data will be collected at three timepoints, baseline, 6 weeks and 12 weeks. The primary outcome is the System Usability Scale at 12 weeks. Secondary outcomes include the User Engagement Scale Short Form, SF-12, Recent Physical Activity Questionnaire (RPAQ), bespoke, app specific usability questions, and feasibility outcomes. Additional data collected includes participant demographic information, technology self-efficacy and adverse events. Weekly anonymised usage data from the app will also be collected by the app team and analysed separately to complement the questionnaire data. Discussion: This study will help us better understand the feasibility and acceptability of using the P-STEP® in the community. The results will also help inform future studies. Within the last two decades, no studies have comprehensively reviewed the risk of varying types of ultraviolet (UV) exposure on melanoma in fairer skinned individuals. Our research objective was to determine whether or not there was a change in the risk of UV exposure with development of melanoma in Fitzpatrick skin types I–IV based on more recent data over the past 20 years. We performed a systematic review from January 2002 to December 2021 analysing UV exposure and melanoma risk in Fitzpatrick type I–IV individuals. Out of 19,852 studies, 26 met inclusion criteria. Data spanned subjects from national and multinational cohorts (USA, Europe, Australia, Asia and South America). Twenty studies (77%, 20/26) identified a significant association between UV exposure and melanoma incidence. Sunburn was the most commonly assessed risk factor. Sunburn studies encompassed 3417 melanoma and found positive significant odds ratios (OR [95% CI]) in 11 out of 13 studies, ranging from 1.23 [1.01–1.49] to 8.48 [4.35–16.54]. Pooled analysis of the risk of melanoma with sunburn history found an unadjusted odds ratio of 1.66 [1.40–1.97] and adjusted odds ratio of 1.23 [1.04–1.46]. Cumulative sun exposure, measured as number of hours of sun exposure or calculated UV flux, was the second most common risk factor, encompassing 913 melanomas with positive significant ORs ranging from 1.1 [1.0–1.2] to 5.2 [2.1–12.5]. For other forms of UV exposure, a majority of studies showed an association with UV index (6/9), outdoor leisure activity (3/3) and left‐sided laterality (1/1). Purpose: The aim of the study was to identify settings associated with SARS-CoV-2 transmission throughout the COVID-19 pandemic in France. Methods: Cases with recent SARS-CoV-2 infection were matched with controls (4:1 ratio) on age, sex, region, population size, and calendar week. Odds ratios for SARS-CoV-2 infection were estimated for nine periods in models adjusting for socio-demographic characteristics, health status, COVID-19 vaccine, and past infection. Results: Between October 27, 2020 and October 2, 2022, 175,688 cases were matched with 43,922 controls. An increased risk of infection was documented throughout the study for open-space offices compared to offices without open space (OR range across the nine periods: 1.12 to 1.57) and long-distance trains (1.25 to 1.88), and during most of the study for convenience stores (OR range in the periods with increased risk: 1.15 to 1.44), take-away delivery (1.07 to 1.28), car-pooling with relatives (1.09 to 1.68), taxis (1.08 to 1.89), airplanes (1.20 to 1.78), concerts (1.31 to 2.09) and night-clubs (1.45 to 2.95). No increase in transmission was associated with short-distance shared transport, car-pooling booked over platforms, markets, supermarkets and malls, hairdressers, museums, movie theatres, outdoor sports, and swimming pools. The increased risk of infection in bars and restaurants was no longer present in restaurants after reopening in June 2021. It persisted in bars only among those aged under 40 years. Conclusion: Closed settings in which people are less likely to wear masks were most affected by SARS-CoV-2 transmission and should be the focus of air quality improvement. Simple Summary: Outdoor recreationists might intentionally or unintentionally disturb birds or other wildlife. To better understand the unintended disturbance by mountain hikers of golden eagle breeding sites in a Norwegian national park, we studied hikers' willingness to accept measures to reduce their disturbance. Most of the hikers indicated that they were willing to change behaviors to avoid disturbing wildlife (or eagle breeding). By investigating the basic values towards wildlife among the hikers (e.g., to what extent they prioritized human interests over those of wildlife), we showed that people who cared more for wildlife tended to accept stricter measures and were more willing to change their behaviors. If the hikers had known beforehand that they could disturb wildlife, it is likely that many would have avoided the trip in periods of eagle breeding. Yet, there were some differences depending on peoples' values. Having knowledge of peoples' wildlife value orientations is therefore useful when aiming to manage human–wildlife interactions more sustainably. Wildlife value orientations (WVOs) are useful for gaining knowledge about how humans' relationship to nature, wildlife, and management differs between groups in society. Our study investigated the level of acceptance for the implementation of measures to avoid the disturbance of golden eagles among hikers with different WVOs. Our results indicated differences between WVO typologies regarding how they assessed the consequences of outdoor recreation on nature and wildlife, as well as measures to manage human traffic. These findings contributed to confirming our hypotheses that peoples' WVOs have an impact on how people assess wildlife and the natural environment, and that WVOs affect the acceptance of management measures. This study concluded that identifying and studying visitors' WVOs contributes to understanding the underlying dimensions that influence peoples' attitudes and behavior. Parks, greenspaces, and other outdoor recreation resources provide a range of physical, social, and emotional benefits to users, thus providing a highly valued community service. While park managers’ commitment to inclusive excellence is genuine, the fact remains that visitors are not always collectively representative of the local communities served, meaning that the benefits available through engagement in parks are seldom equitably distributed. The purpose of this study is to analyze resident representation in four parks with diverse recreational opportunities and to set forth management strategies that address areas of underrepresentation. Four parks located in Montgomery County, Maryland (US) were selected for this study. Twelve days of onsite data collection allowed for the documentation of park visitor activities and select demographics. Results indicated statistically significant overrepresentation and underrepresentation based on age at three parks and race/ethnicity at all four parks. Some parks had usership that was predominantly oriented toward one racial/ethnic or age group meaning that other groups were moderately to severely underrepresented. Background: More women are going outdoors and menstrual hygiene is a concern for these women, we do not know how collegiate outdoor programs are addressing this topic, if at all. It is possible that feminine hygiene may not be adequately discussed in these settings. Because of this, the overall health and outdoor experiences of female participants are potentially at risk. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding of current practices and potential barriers surrounding feminine hygiene and menstruation dialogs in college outdoor recreation programs in Texas. Methodology/Approach: An open-ended online survey was distributed to 36 schools with outdoor recreation programs in Texas. Responses were independently analyzed and coded for emergent themes. Findings/Conclusions: Thirty-eight percent of schools did not address feminine hygiene and menstruation in pretrip communications. Predominant themes consisted of an emphasis on health and hygiene, dependence on female leaders, a need for more knowledge and resources, and a desire for normalization. Implications: Most professionals expressed that resources to expand their knowledge on these topics can help to better prepare participants. Current practices surrounding these topics may be insufficient and able to improve. Further research is needed to evaluate the efficacy of the curriculum and the preference of participants. This study examines the perspectives and experiences of older lifelong participants in outdoor education/recreation. 32 participants, women (11) and men (21), aged 60-84 provided narratives of their lifelong engagements in the outdoors in nature-based activities. They were invited to write freely on their early experiences and their current engagements in the outdoors. The purpose was to explore and understand why and how serious lifelong older participants continued with their outdoor activities. This paper considers participants' current embodied engagements. The evidence suggests that as they age, their bodies become less able to deal with discomfort. Yet, the participants, as a consequence of their lifelong knowledge and experience, manage injuries and ill-health, choosing to adapt in various ways to enable their continued engagement/enjoyment in being active in nature. Participant safety is becoming increasingly important as outdoor sports activities gain popularity. A machine learning-based strategy for risk assessment and safety control in outdoor sports activities is presented in this paper. Our framework uses predictive modelling, sophisticated algorithms, and historical data analysis to identify potential dangers and improve safety procedures. It also considers participant profiles and environmental conditions. Comprehensive testing and validation are used to examine the model's efficacy, showing that it can offer risk evaluations in real-time and support preventive safety measures. Our approach entails placing sensor-based Internet of Things (IoT) devices at building sites to gather extremely detailed temporal and geographic weather, building, and labour data. This data is then cooperatively used on the edge nodes to train Deep Neural Network (DNN) models in a cross-silos way. The present study makes a valuable contribution to sports safety by offering a clever approach that integrates technology and outdoor leisure to ensure participants have a safe and pleasurable experience. The experiment's outcomes show how well the suggested strategy works to increase the adoption of construction safety management systems and lower the likelihood of future mishaps and fatalities. Increasing public health awareness has stressed the significance of the mental and physical benefits of outdoor activities. Government involvement and support for urban redevelopment projects in Korea, such as Seoul Dulle-gil, connected previously disconnected green spaces. Despite the ecological and cultural importance of urban spaces, their impact on residents and tourists and their role in exploring the city's dynamic remains limited. This study aims to evaluate how green space activities engage in sustainable land management and offer insights into surrounding communities. A quantitative big data research method was employed, analyzing 3995 online blog post reviews using Python code, and sentiment analysis conducted with pandas and KoNLPy's Okt library. The results indicated that sentiment scores were generally higher in sections located south of the Han River. Among the eight trail courses, courses 6, 3, 4, and 5, located south of the Han River, exhibited higher sentiment scores compared to courses 7, 8, 2, and 1, located north of the Han River, which showed lower satisfaction levels. Among the 16 characteristics influencing visitor satisfaction, the study emphasized the importance of potential space maintenance to enhance trail user safety and community well-being, contributing to sustainable land management. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the lived experience behind the choice of whether to bring mobile technologies along while engaging in outdoor activities. Participant observer style interviews were completed in which the researcher engaged in an outdoor activity of the participants' choice while conducting interviews. How participants experience their decision not to use mobile technologies while outdoors has essences of participants' value of the outdoor experience; the relationships participants bring to the outdoors and hold with the outdoors; the tensions of work that mobile technologies bring to the outdoors; and the necessity of mobile technology to provide security. This study may help researchers understand why people choose whether to use mobile technologies while experiencing the outdoors. Designers may use the implications of these findings to leverage the perceived benefits to develop technology-enhanced applications for meaningful learning. In the context of rapid urbanization in third-world countries, many cities adopt high-density development, effectively using land but limiting open space, especially for children, impacting their spatial rights. This study focused on the Dongcheng and Xicheng districts of Beijing. It employed methods such as variance inflation factor, multiple linear regression, spatial autocorrelation, and spatial econometric models to investigate the impact of various configuration factors on children's satisfaction with outdoor activity space. The study also revealed the spillover effects of outdoor activity space configuration for children in high-density urban environments. The results showed that (1) children's satisfaction was significantly influenced by the configuration elements. The variables that had the most significant impact on satisfaction were the number of outdoor spaces, facilities' amusement, advertisements, and service management levels. (2) Using spatial econometric models, we determined that spatial dependency significantly enhances the model's explanatory power. The quantity of outdoor space had the greatest effect on children's outdoor activity space satisfaction, followed by facilities' amusement and advertisement impact, and service management had the least impact, though all categories positively affected satisfaction. This study held significant value and importance in improving the rights of children in mega-cities in developing countries and promoting the physical and mental well-being of children. E-biking is alluring for its various physical, environmental, and financial benefits and the ability to travel farther and faster, and being physically easier to ride than astride an analog (traditional) bicycle. E-bikes are also a source of controversy, especially in places where analog bicycles have been allowed but e-bikes represent a "slippery slope" of technology permissions and/or in situations where the function of e-bikes may increase concerns about safety. Despite an increase in use and conversation about such use, academic literature focused on e-bikes' social aspects remains sparse. The objective of this work is to describe the existing literature on the characteristics of social aspects of e-biking, particularly in leisure contexts. Analyzing the literature on e-bike social research is crucial considering e-bikes' rapid rise in popularity and potential effects on access, inclusion, leisure, and sustainability. As e-bike prevalence and use increases worldwide, it is important to understand what topics characterize the existing e-bike literature, and, particularly in leisure-focused studies, to ascertain where studies may lend insight toward aims of inclusive and sustainable access, and related policy considerations. The Integrated Recreation Amenities Framework (IRAF) provides a conceptual framework for considering this question, as it focuses on the topical, spatial, and temporal scales of outdoor leisure-related activities toward sustainable conditions and explicitly provides an opportunity for emergent and case-specific factors to be considered alongside established ones. In this work, we explore the following: (1) How are e-bikes discussed across disciplines? and (2) How are e-bikes discussed in leisure-focused articles? Using a scoping review approach, we analyzed a corpus of 279 peer-reviewed articles relevant to the social aspects of e-bikes. Primarily using the IRAF for conceptual framing, our results center the geographies and contexts, topical areas, interdisciplinarity, and emergent additional social considerations of e-biking in general and in leisure-specific studies. The results enable us to connect interdisciplinary topic discussions and suggest where foundational and connective studies are warranted. Purpose: While much research has examined the increase in outdoor recreation and those who began participating in outdoor recreation during the COVID-19 pandemic, to-date no published empirical research has examined perceived post-pandemic recreation participation among the latter group. Research Methods: Through a national panel survey of 902 respondents, we examine differences in perceived post-pandemic substitution behaviors across activity- and involvement-based clusters of new or returning outdoor recreationists using a two-part cluster analysis followed by analyses of variance. Results and Findings: Results suggest significant differences exist across activity- and involvement-based clusters. On average, this research suggests that Runners, Purist Gardeners, General Recreationists, and Casual Recreationists are less likely than High Intensity Recreationists and Hunters & Anglers to abandon outdoor recreation after the pandemic. Implications: Implications are provided for both the continued development of substitutability theory and outdoor recreation managers as they adapt toward a post-pandemic future. Specifically, managerial implications concerning the demand for activity-specific facilities and leisure abandonment are provided. Recent respiratory outbreaks have garnered substantial attention, yet most respiratory monitoring remains confined to physical signals. Exhaled breath condensate (EBC) harbors rich molecular information that could unveil diverse insights into an individual’s health. Unfortunately, challenges related to sample collection and the lack of on-site analytical tools impede the widespread adoption of EBC analysis. Here, we introduce EBCare, a mask-based device for real-time in situ monitoring of EBC biomarkers. Using a tandem cooling strategy, automated microfluidics, highly selective electrochemical biosensors, and a wireless reading circuit, EBCare enables continuous multimodal monitoring of EBC analytes across real-life indoor and outdoor activities. We validated EBCare’s usability in assessing metabolic conditions and respiratory airway inflammation in healthy participants, patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or asthma, and patients after COVID-19 infection. The International Olympic Committee recently introduced a consensus statement on recommendations for outdoor sports in the heat. However, indoor sports such as fencing whereby athletes are required to wear full body protective clothing when competing have received no recommendations. Such scenarios could cause high thermoregulatory demands particularly as competition progresses into latter rounds (direct elimination; DE). Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the thermoregulatory responses of épée fencing across different phases of competition (Poule and DE). Seven well-trained fencers competed in a simulated competition comprising of seven Poule and seven DE fights. Gastrointestinal temperature (Tgast), skin temperature (Tskin), mask temperature (Tmask), heart rate (HR), thermal sensation, differentiated ratings of perceived exertion (RPE), and movement characteristics were collected for all fights. There was a moderate thermoregulatory demand during Poule rounds shown by post-fight Tgast (38.1 ± 0.4°C), Tskin (34.4 ± 0.7°C), and thermal sensation ratings (6 ± 1). A greater thermoregulatory and perceptual demand observed during DE rounds evidenced by Tgast (38.7 ± 0.3°C post fight), Tskin (35.1 ± 0.7°C), thermal sensation (7 ± 1), increases in Tmask across DE rounds (~1.1°C), and RPE (~15). Furthermore, a significant (p < 0.05) reduction in distance covered from DE 1 to DE 7 suggests a thermoregulatory based impact on performance. The Delphi method was used to gather assessments from 93 experts about drivers of future angling participation by locals and tourist anglers in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. The main drivers of future angling participation related to habitat and fish populations, and access to and information about fishing. For Norway and Finland, the predicted future decline in local angler numbers was consistent with a life‐cycle model of recreational fisheries, while the anticipated increase for the three other countries contradicted the model. For tourist anglers, growth was expected for both domestic and foreign tourists. Long‐term and societal drivers, such as urbanization, sociocultural changes, and climate change were not seen as strong drivers, and may be considered out of reach by managers, but should be included with information and conservation drivers in angler recruitment and retention strategies. In the post-pandemic era, outdoor jogging has become an increasingly popular form of exercise due to the growing emphasis on health. It is essential to comprehensively analyze the factors influencing the spatial distribution of outdoor jogging activities and to propose planning strategies with practical guidance. Using multi-source geospatial big data and multiple models, this study constructs a comprehensive analytical framework to examine the association between environmental variables and the frequency of outdoor jogging activities in Guangzhou. Firstly, outdoor jogging trajectory data were collected from a fitness app, and potential influencing factors were selected based on multi-source big data from the perspectives of the built environment, street perception, and natural environment. For example, using the street-view imagery, objective environmental elements such as greenery and subjective elements such as safety perception were extracted from a human-centric perspective. Secondly, the framework included three models: a backward stepwise regression, an optimal parameters-based geographical detector, and a geographically weighted regression (GWR) model. These models served, to screen significant variables, identify the synergistic effects among the variables, and quantify the spatial heterogeneity of the effects, respectively. Finally, the study area was clustered based on the results of the GWR model to propose urban planning strategies with clear spatial positions and practical significance. The results indicated the following: (1) Factors related to the built environment and street perception significantly influence jogging frequency distribution. (2) Public sports facilities, the level of greenery, and safety perception were identified as key factors influencing jogging activities, representing the three aspects of service facilities, objective perception, and subjective perception, respectively. (3) Specifically, the influence of each factor on jogging activities displayed significant spatial variation. For instance, sports facilities and greenery level were positively correlated with jogging frequency in the city center. (4) Lastly, the study area was divided into four clusters, each representing different local associative characteristics between variables and jogging activities. Exercise and nature exposure are independently recognised for their positive relationship with health, but their combined effects are not fully understood. The present review summarises the evidence that compares physiological and perceptual differences of a single bout of exercise performed outdoors versus indoors. Nine databases were searched for articles published before March 2021 which utilised controlled designs to assess at least one physiological outcome during or after a single acute bout of outdoor exercise. When appropriate, quantitative analyses were completed. Quality of articles was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Assessment Tool. The findings of 38 articles (Total N = 1168) were examined. Participants were primarily healthy. Summarised outcomes included objective exercise intensity, perceived exertion, performance, neuroendocrine and metabolic responses, cardiovascular responses, thermoregulation, enjoyment, intention for future exercise, and perceptions of the environment. Outdoor environments increased enjoyment (N = 234, K = 10, g = 1.24, 95% CI = [0.59, 1.89], p < 0.001). Findings for remaining outcomes were non-significant or inconclusive and challenging to interpret due to high risk of bias. Overall, outdoor exercise appears to feel more enjoyable than indoor exercise when matched for intensity, with equivocal physiological benefit. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study explores the relationship between parental attitudes toward outdoor activities and children's health-related quality of life, focusing on the mediation of outdoor activity time and nature connections. Data from 399 kindergarten children, supplemented by parental insights, were analyzed using structural equation modelling (SEM). Positive parental attitudes toward outdoor activities were found to predict enhanced physical functioning and kindergarten performance. Additionally, a positive correlation was observed for social functioning, while emotional functioning remained unaffected. Parental attitudes directly influenced physical functioning, with indirect effects on kindergarten performance mediated by outdoor time and nature connections. These findings highlight the importance of parental attitudes in promoting children's well-being and suggest potential strategies to enhance their health-related quality of life. The purpose of this study was to examine the recreational experiences of African American residents in Hillsborough County, Florida at varied levels: institutional, recreational, and personal. To investigate the intricacy of perceptions and experiences among African Americans in the context of outdoor recreation, the first author used qualitative methods to provide in-depth investigation into African American residents' perceptions of recreation in Hillsborough County, Florida. Our analysis revealed four overarching themes: 1) Racialised Outdoor Leisure Identity, 2) Representation Matters, 3) Recreational Constraints and Opportunities, and 4) Equity in Leisure Experiences. The findings of this study add to the literatures on outdoor leisure identity and recreation of African Americans and their perceptions of outdoor identity, why representation matters, how safety constraints are negotiated, especially among women respondents, and of residents' perceptions of equity within their parks. Communication is a strategic management lever for promoting user knowledge, understanding, acceptance, support, and conservation-related pro-environmental behavior within Coastal and Marine Protected Areas (CMPAs). But while user segmentation is considered a traditional operational tool for targeting user audiences effectively within terrestrial protected areas, research also highlights a low level of concrete application to CMPAs. Based on Public Perceptions Research literature, this study explores a panel of eight theoretical variables that reflect the multidimensional character of recreationists’ perceptions of CMPAs and how the related results could inform appropriate CMPA communication strategies. Onsite face-to-face interviews with 1,000 users were conducted for seven recreational activities (hiking, surfing, scuba-diving, boating, sailing, kite-surfing, kayaking) across a total of ten local sites. Results revealed that despite sharing a common motivation for being in contact with nature, recreationists expressed diverse perceptions and attitudes toward CMPAs and management, which can be divided into five segments: “CMPA-Not-convinced” (31.3% of all recreationists), “CMPA-Local Conservator” (11.5%), “CMPA-Not-Responsible” (12.7%), “CMPA-Passers-by” (20.1%) and “CMPA-Convinced” (24.4%). Findings show the value of visitor segmentation as an operational tool to inform CMPA management and communication strategies in a context of low knowledge about visitor audiences. Throughout history, small village communities in the Arctic have developed several strategies to ensure their survival. Along the Torne River, some fishing communities have produced specific architectures, landscapes, and social strategies to support their communities and survive for centuries. However, depopulation, aging, climate change, and the expansion of the extraction industry are threatening these villages. The hypothesis is that traditional fishing villages situated alongside rivers possess architectural, urban, and social attributes that can enhance outdoor activities linked to water and green spaces and enable the long-term social sustainability of Arctic villages. The innovative approach of the paper involves combining a mapping methodology of green and blue infrastructure with the architectural, urban, social and historical values of a place to identify design strategies for improving attractiveness demonstrating its efficacy, particularly in small, local-scale villages. The paper investigates the villages of Kukkola and Korpikylä taken as emblematic examples and explores the architectural and landscape value in relation to the green–blue infrastructure. The outdoor thermal comfort (OTC) of children is more specific than that of adults, and the complex influence of outdoor activity spaces on children's thermal comfort warrants further investigation. To investigate the outdoor thermal comfort baseline (OTCB) of children in Hangzhou and explore the thermal impact of outdoor surfaces on children, a survey was conducted in six typical outdoor activity spaces in Hangzhou, China, during spring and summer utilizing physical measurements, questionnaire surveys, and the universal thermal climate index (UTCI). This study analyzed the differences in thermal perception among children in Hangzhou in different seasons, their OTCB, and the impact of surface reflectance (Rs) on children's OTC. The results indicated the following: 1) In spring, children in Hangzhou generally felt comfortable, but their discomfort with heat noticeably increased in summer. 2) The neutral UTCIs (NUTCIs) for Hangzhou children were 11.6 °C (spring) and 27.7 °C (summer), and the NUTCI ranges (NUTCIRs) were 9.7–17.5 °C (spring) and 25.7–30.0 °C (summer); additionally, the thermal acceptability ranges (TARs) were 13.2–25.2 °C (spring) and 11.8–34.8 °C (summer). 3) A high Rs made children feel more uncomfortable with heat, which was primarily due to the space's total shortwave and longwave radiation, which peaked between 14:00 and 15:00. 4) Based on the research findings, corresponding bioclimatic design strategies were proposed. Recommendations include using high Rs underlays with shading, composite underlays, or the future adoption of thermochromic coatings. Keeping permeable underlays moist is essential for activating their cooling mechanisms. Fundamental safety measures are imperative. This study provides valuable data for urban planners and landscape designers to create public spaces suitable for children's outdoor activities, contributing to a harmonious and unified living environment. The fan cooling vest is coming into very common use by Japanese outdoor manual workers. We examined that to what extent using this vest reduces thermal strain and perception during outdoor exercise in the heat on a sunny summer day. Ten male baseball players in high school conducted two baseball training sessions for 2-h with (VEST) or without (CON) a commercially available fan cooling vest on a baseball uniform. These sessions commenced at 10 a.m. on separate days in early August. The fan airflow rate attached the vest was 62 L·s−1. Neither ambient temperature (Mean ± SD: VEST 31.9 ± 0.2°C; CON 31.8 ± 0.7°C), wet-bulb globe temperature (VEST 31.2 ± 0.4°C; CON 31.4 ± 0.5°C) nor solar radiation (VEST 1008 ± 136 W·m−2; CON 1042 ± 66 W·m−2) was different between trials. Mean skin temperature (VEST 34.5 ± 1.1°C; CON 35.1 ± 1.4°C), infrared tympanic temperature (VEST 38.9 ± 0.9°C; CON 39.2 ± 1.2°C), heart rate (VEST 127 ± 31 bpm; CON 139 ± 33 bpm), body heat storage (VEST 140 ± 34 W·m−2; CON 160 ± 22 W·m−2), thermal sensation (− 4–4: VEST 0 ± 2; CON 3 ± 1) and rating of perceived exertion (6–20: VEST 11 ± 2; CON 14 ± 2) were lower in VEST than CON (all P < 0.05). Total distance measured with a global positioning system (VEST 3704 ± 293 m; CON 3936 ± 501 m) and body fluid variables were not different between trials. This study indicates that the fan cooling vest use can reduce thermal strain and perception during outdoor exercise in the heat on a sunny summer day. As large open spaces, such as national and regional parks, have become popular as recreational destinations, car dependency to access those open spaces has created capacity challenges. Due to these issues, transit-to-parks (T2P) initiatives—public transportation services connecting populated areas to large parks—have gained global traction. Limited research has examined these sustainability initiatives, and more knowledge is needed about how these initiatives are created and function. To address these gaps, this study explores motivations, facilitators, and challenges related to T2P initiatives in the U.S. and Canada. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 28 practitioners involved in the planning or operation of T2P initiatives in the two countries. Motivations for T2P included parking and congestion issues, environmental concerns, equity, and economic development. Facilitators of T2P initiatives included robust partnerships, community engagement, and advocacy efforts, emphasizing the importance of tailored narratives and coalition-building. The primary challenges mentioned were limited funding and labor, inadequate infrastructure, and siloed agencies and politics. Social media and other platforms have become an essential part of outdoor activities as they influence how nature is experienced and engaged with, but also what good nature is seen as. In this article, we explore how social understandings of nature and digital technologies are mutually performed. Using the empirical case of nature selfies—an archetype of imagery on social media platforms—posted on Instagram, Facebook, and Tripadvisor, and a small participatory "breaching experiment" aimed at collecting "ugly nature selfies," we analyse and interrogate nature/society relationships displayed online within the platform contexts of attention economy and affordances. We conclude that nature selfies reinforce the desirability of consuming "beautiful" nature, while attention economy and platform affordances limit the possibilities for alternative nature/society relationships to be developed and promoted. Aim: Exercise test outdoors is widely used to diagnose asthma in children, but it is unclear how much outdoor air factors affect the results. Methods: We analysed 321 outdoor exercise challenge tests with spirometry in children 6–16 years conducted due to suspicion of asthma or for assessing the effect of medication on asthma. We studied the association of FEV1 decrease and incidence of exercise‐induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) with temperature, relative humidity (RH) and absolute humidity (AH). Results: Asthma was diagnosed in 57% of the subjects. AH ≥5 g/m3, but not RH or temperature, was associated with the EIB incidence (p = 0.035). In multivariable logistic regression, AH ≥5 g/m3 was negatively associated (OR = 0.51, 95% CI [0.28─0.92], p = 0.026) while obstruction before exercise (OR = 2.11, 95% CI [1.16─3.86], p = 0.015) and IgE‐mediated sensitisation were positively associated with EIB (OR = 2.24, 95% CI [1.11─4.51], p = 0.025). AH (r = −0.12, p = 0.028) and temperature (r = −0.13, p = 0.023) correlated with decrease in FEV1. In multivariable linear regression, only AH was associated with FEV1 decrease (coefficient = −0.044, 95% CI [−0.085 to −0.004], p = 0.033). Conclusion: AH of outdoor air associates with occurrence and severity of EIB in outdoor exercise tests in children. Care should be taken when interpreting negative outdoor exercise test results if AH of air is high. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Waterproof and breathable fibrous membrane is a new type of polymer functional material widely used in outdoor protection, sports equipment, industrial production, and other fields. To impart waterproof ability and breathability, a common practice is to modify the electrospun membrane with low surface-energy materials, such as fluorosilane. However, when directly added to the electrospinning solution, the effects of fluorosilane on the property of the prepared membrane have been scarcely reported. Herein, we prepared the electrospun polyurethane membrane by adding two types of fluorosilane into the polyurethane solution. The effects of fluorosilane type and concentration on the conductivity and viscosity of the electrospinning solution were investigated. Moreover, the prepared polyurethane/fluorosilane fibrous membranes are analyzed in terms of their surface morphology, structure, water contact angle, breathable performance, and mechanical properties. Results show that the dual effects of fluorosilane content exert an opposing influence on the jet drawing process, which yields a minimum fiber diameter when the fluorosilane content is 20%. Under this condition, the membrane shows the highest water vapor transmission rate (10.4 kg/(m2·d). In addition the membranes have the maximum water contact angle (138°) and breaking strength (12 MPa) when the fluorosilane content is 40%. International research highlights the potentially valuable contribution of outdoor education to the healthy development and proper holistic education of students. Among the various benefits that students gain from participating in outdoor activities are the mitigation of symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), improved respiration, memory improvement, skills development and others. Despite the well-documented contribution of such activities to children's wellbeing, there is an increasing trend of younger children lacking contact with nature. The current study investigates to what extent teachers in Greece, at schools where students aged 6–18 attend, provide opportunities for outdoor activities to their students. Furthermore, it investigates the teacher's perceptions of the benefits the students gain from such activities, based on their personal experience and the experience of other co-teachers in their school. The results presented in this study indicate that the percentage of teachers who choose outdoor activities during the educational process in Greece is rather low, although they identify that such activities provide significant benefits to students. Based on the perceptions of teachers regarding the mental, cognitive and physical benefits that students gain from outdoor activities a positive association was found between the participation of students in such activities and these benefits. Therefore, this study reveals that it is of significant importance to increase the number of opportunities for students' participation in outdoor learning activities, by supporting teachers, creating learning communities with them and empowering them to provide more outdoor learning opportunities. Abstract Wildlife viewing is growing in popularity, especially among Black, Indigenous and people of colour (BIPOC), whose participation has increased dramatically in the last 20 years. We used a nationwide sample of wildlife viewers to examine how identity as a wildlife viewer, the importance of wildlife viewing to one's life, ethnoracial identity and social support influenced the degree of participation in wildlife viewing. We examined data as part of a non‐probabilistic online survey of wildlife viewers (n = 17,104). We were particularly interested in how participation, support, the importance of wildlife viewing, and identity as wildlife viewers varied across ethnoracial groups. Support has been found to influence involvement in various activities, while identity and importance have been shown to drive continued participation, suggesting that these factors may be of great value for encouraging and sustaining behaviour. We found that, compared with White groups, multiple ethnoracial groups identified less as wildlife viewers. However, they indicated that wildlife viewing is more important to their lives. We also found that most ethnoracial groups received more support from friends, family, mentors and peers than White viewers. This research can help understand the participation of Black, Indigenous and people of colour in outdoor recreation. Furthermore, this work demonstrates how legacies of racially motivated discriminatory policies may limit participation among ethnoracially diverse communities.
