This inductive study of eight international development interventions analyzes mechanisms that enable integration of evidence in practice, a perennial challenge of learning and collaboration across occupational and organizational boundaries. We demonstrate how structural and programmatic scaffolding practices enabled actors from an array of organizations and communities of practice to collaborate and learn despite the uncertainty and complexity inherent in the international development context. These modular scaffolding practices offered temporary stabilization and support that fostered the counter-normative behaviors and mindsets required for continuous learning and adaptive coordination. Through 226 in-depth interviews with international development experts, including practitioners in eight matched interventions in India, Mexico, South Africa, and Ghana, we identified and analyzed mechanisms that explain the varying effectiveness with which evidence was integrated in each case. Our findings have implications for interorganizational innovation and collaboration under conditions of complexity and uncertainty and for dynamic interactions among individuals, their organizations, and their communities of practice when they are attempting to bring about systemic change. Why do firms take positions on divisive social issues? In this article, I draw on theories of stigma by association to explain why firms' mere proximity to controversial political actors may lead stakeholders to presume that firms silent on social issues are misaligned with the stakeholders' sociopolitical preferences. Firms, in turn, countervail these presumptions of misalignment by eschewing silence and claiming sociopolitical positions. Substantiating this theory in the context of employee recruitment following the 2017 Unite the Right White supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, I show that Charlottesville's employers combated presumptions that they shared demonstrators' anti-diversity positions by making countervailing pro-diversity claims in their online job postings. In supplementary analysis, I show that the rally was associated with a newfound wage premium in job postings by Charlottesville's employers but that this premium was lower when employers made pro-diversity claims. This study advances understanding of strategic sociopolitical positioning whereby firms make calculated appeals to stakeholders. It contrasts with related research showing that firms use social claims to combat negative evaluations resulting from their own actions or to differentiate from competitors. In doing so, it suggests opportunities for further research investigating, for example, additional motivations for firms' sociopolitical positioning, how positioning might evolve in the context of growing political polarization, and how positioning might relate to workplace inequality and diversity. However, the emerging field of DeSci, faces several challenges, such as the absence of an organizational framework to describe its inherent complexities. This study introduces the Decentralized Science Pyramid Framework (DSPF), an innovative adaptation of Mintzberg's organizational structure, adapted to the unique demands and properties of DeSci. The DSPF delineates a structured model for DeSci projects that integrates technology, governance, community engagement, and application within a decentralized context. Through the introduction of the DSPF, this research highlights the operational dynamics of DeSci, focusing on the practical application of Mintzberg's theories to address real-world scientific challenges. The case study of VitaDAO, a decentralized autonomous organization exemplifying the core principles of DeSci, demonstrates the practical applicability of the DSPF. This paper investigated principal interns' leadership work during the COVID-19 pandemic in Texas. We used data from one-on-one semistructured interviews to document the experiences of 21 principal candidates in spring 2021 through spring 2022. Participants' leadership work changed in four ways during the pandemic: striving, intensifying, expanding, and limiting. We also found that the changes that participants reported varied across the three semesters we studied. Our findings highlight how, in some cases, the pandemic created new opportunities for interns, while in other cases, it led to an intensification or limiting of work that narrowed interns' leadership work. Research Question: There is a dearth of research within prominent sport management outlets using critical race-based theories. This article provides a pathway to addressing this problem as we build on the call to address, challenge, and disrupt epistemological racism in sport management research. We propose adopting a theory of racialized organizations – a meso-level approach to examine organizations as racial structures. Research Methods: Within this conceptual paper, we provide an overview of the theory and apply it to specific case examples to highlight the utility of TRO within sport management research and practice. Results and Findings: Coupling TRO and sport management brings awareness to the racialization processes within sport organizations and helps disrupt dominant narratives of sport being race neutral. Implications: Utilizing TRO assists scholars in reframing research questions, increasing the study of racially minoritized sport stakeholders, and challenging notions of race neutrality that reinforce inequitable power relations. The rising prominence of blockchain technology has spurred researchers to delve deeper into its applications through the lens of organizational and management theories. Our thematic analysis of blockchain literature reveals examination across five key areas: economic, strategic, operational, behavioral, and implementation considerations, each viewed through various theoretical perspectives. The multifaceted nature of blockchain phenomena necessitates diverse types of theory and research questions. Thus, the unique characteristics within each area stimulate the formulation of inquiries that address a system of research questions about what, how, why, when, where, what will be, and how to do. Existing literature predominantly emphasizes explanatory and predictive type of theories, notably expanding research topics such as blockchain adoption behavior. However, this singular focus limits the exploration of diverse reasoning approaches suited to blockchain's complexity. Our study illustrates how different types of theory contribute to understanding each of the identified blockchain application areas. Based on our findings, we propose pertinent questions that highlight the need for varied theoretical frameworks and address specific issues within each application area. Furthermore, we recommend appropriate type of theories to address these questions, fostering a more multi-perspective investigation across the breadth of blockchain-related research topics and areas. By embracing diverse theoretical perspectives, we aim to create a more balanced research landscape, facilitating deeper insights into blockchain phenomena.

This theoretical paper investigates the role of innovative leadership in enhancing leader-member exchange (LMX) and mitigating psychological contract breach (PCB). The focus is on how innovation in leadership strengthens the quality of relationships between leaders and employees, subsequently impacting employee behavior positively. The characteristics of innovative leadership are examined to elucidate its potential in fostering trust, commitment, and mutual respect within organizations. Furthermore, this paper addresses how improved LMX through innovative leadership influences employees' organizational citizenship behavior (OCB), leading to enhanced overall organizational performance. By exploring the dynamics between innovative leadership, LMX, and PCB, the paper provides a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms through which innovative leadership can prevent PCB and improve LMX. This analysis offers valuable insights for both scholars and practitioners in the fields of organizational behavior and leadership, highlighting practical implications for fostering a positive organizational environment.

Purpose – Healthcare systems receive criticism from both providers and recipients. The diversity in these systems throughout the world makes innovation and change difficult. However, a structured analysis of healthcare systems is crucial to identify areas for improvement and to share best practices for the betterment of healthcare throughout the world. Design/methodology/approach – The paper uses organizational theory as an unbiased tool for evaluating healthcare systems. This theory analyses healthcare systems across five dimensions: environment, culture, social structure, physical structure and technology. This analysis provides an in-depth understanding of the organization's surroundings, formation and function. It offers a lens through which healthcare systems can be envisioned and establishes a vocabulary for communication. Findings – Organizational theory presents a multifaceted approach to initiate assessments aiming to enhance existing healthcare systems and customize them to serve all stakeholders within the focused ecosystem. It alters the dynamics of criticism and presents an opportunity to sustainably address unforeseen healthcare challenges in the future. As the author proceeds to understand healthcare organizations through the perspective of organizational theory, the author also uncovers subtle yet crucial issues such as resource dependence, cultural clashes, organizational silence, bureaucracy, hierarchy, ethics, values, engagement and burnout. Originality/value – This paper was crafted from a collaborative paper for the final of a master's degree. A collaboration was conceptualized using organisation theory as the tool to align processes and achieve successful outcome. The narrative of the collaboration has been edited and paper presented highlighting the importance of the tool of organisation theory in healthcare systems.

Significant efforts have been made to promote competition in public service sectors, expanding the reach of competition into non-economic fields. Surprisingly little is, however, known about the process by which competition is introduced into such settings. We examine this process, focusing on a Swedish municipality's efforts to implement competition for students among its schools. By incorporating recent theoretical advancements regarding competition as an organized relationship, and utilizing a combination of qualitative and quantitative data, we shed light on the organizational efforts undertaken by politicians and bureaucrats to teach their schools to compete. We find that introducing competition can be complex, time-consuming and that it requires substantial organizational commitment. We highlight the existence of varying perceptions of competition among different stakeholders following its introduction. These findings suggest the need for future research that addresses questions about the costs of, and interests behind, introducing competition, as well as questions about responsibility for the subsequent effects of competition. This article documents the first significant Orthodox rabbinic periodical published in the United States: a Hebrew monthly that first appeared in 1902 and was continued by a weekly. BVC featured a broad array of rabbinic genres—among them responsa, Talmudic novellae, and religious-law treatises, homilies, opinion pieces, memoirs, hagiographies and even poetry—as well as public notices and advertisements. The article also proposes a theoretical framework, taken from organizational theory, for analyzing the periodical's purpose, its structure, and its intended role within the specific historical and institutional circumstances of its emergence. Understanding "organization" as both a verb and a noun, it interprets the periodical itself, as well as the Union of Orthodox Rabbis in the United States that published it, as organizations attempting to organize the American Orthodox rabbinate as a self-conscious, authoritative, and autonomous entity. This effort, in turn, was a means for organizing Orthodox—mostly immigrant—Jews, their congregations and their religious life, as a coherent social entity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This qualitative study employs a thematic network analysis of the literature to explore the implications and evaluations of the 'Great Reset'. Delving into how complexity theory, especially the principles related to complex systems and coordination, can be applied, this research aims to promote resilience and facilitate comprehensive systemic transformation. This study identifies critical 'Great Reset' components that align or conflict with stakeholders' needs, objectives, and capabilities by examining how diverse stakeholders function within intricate and interconnected systems. All organizations need to allocate labor to production and administration. In many cases—particularly within the public sector—the optimal allocation is far from obvious. Indeed, vocal concerns have been raised about the administrative burden in several public services, not least in education. We investigate this issue using detailed registry data on all employees at Swedish universities and colleges from 2005 to 2019 and document three stylized facts. First, the group of highly educated administrators has grown rapidly, almost by a factor of seven compared with teachers and researchers. Second, the number of less-educated administrators has stayed flat. Third, the time that teachers and researchers spend on administrative tasks has been roughly constant over time. This indicates that resources have been diverted from teaching and research and raises fears of excessive administrative growth in Swedish higher education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this comment, I will deal with Edgar Maraguat's reading of Hegel as a precursor to one prominent theory in contemporary philosophy of biology: the organizational account of biological functions. I will show how Maraguat's account of Hegel's conception of natural teleology fits into the contemporary debate. Finally, I will bring forward exegetical objections to this reading of Hegel and systematic objections to the structural basis that is supposed to justify natural teleology and which, according to Maraguat, Hegel's conception of the organism and that of the organizational account have in common. This study focuses on how admissions at selective colleges and universities represent key racialized organizations. We analyzed data from 50 individual interviews of admissions professionals, through a theory of racialized organizations to recognize admissions as practices that consistently reproduces systemic inequities. We reveal how organizational structures centering an array of institutional priorities can maintain the systemic reproduction of intersectional racial inequalities, by privileging priorities like budgetary constraints, geographic diversity, and other interests, minimizing racial diversity as a priority. Our study bears key implications for future research and practice, by demonstrating that much like a Möbius strip, admissions organizations are difficult to fundamentally change for diversity and equity goals. Even with seemingly dramatic alterations to practices (e.g. test-optional policies) in isolation, Möbius strips generally maintain their structure. Institutional priorities, especially fiscal priorities, maintain the durability in racially unequal admissions outcomes through logics of racial capitalism. Unless institutional priorities fundamentally change, admissions processes will likely continue to reproduce inequalities. Research and systemic change efforts in college admissions should go beyond focusing on isolated elements (e.g. test requirements) and approaches to admissions (e.g. percent plans) to confront admissions and enrollment management systems, by interrogating underlying institutional logics and routines. This article investigates the elective affinity between decision-making models in the fields of organizational theory and artificial intelligence (AI), exploring the decision-making influence of societal ideas in these two research contexts. Using Herbert Simon’s work on organizations and AI as an example, we examine the properties of these societal ideas and identify six key characteristics, emphasizing rational calculations based on a logic of consequences. These specific notions of decision-making converge again in the phenomenon of AI-based algorithmic decision-making in organizations, as we demonstrate using examples from descriptions and advertisements of such systems, the current literature on their use, and empirical research concerning organizational practices.

Recently, the importance of efficient and effective health care has been recognized, especially during the acute phase of the Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Intensive care units (ICUs) have faced an immense workload, with massive numbers of patients being treated in a very short period of time. In general, ICUs are required to deliver high-quality care at all times during the year. At the same time, high-quality organizational goals may not be aligned with the interests, motivation, and development of individual staff members (eg, nurses, and doctors). For management of the ICU, it is important to balance the organizational goals and development of the staff members ("their human capital"), usually referred to as human resource management. Although many studies have considered this area, no holistic view of the topic has been presented. Such a holistic view may help leadership and/or other stakeholders at the ICU to design a better learning health system. This pragmatic review aims to provide a conceptual model for the management of ICUs. This study measured the environmental perception (EP) of higher music education in the United States through the Higher Music Education Organizational Adaptation Survey. Music leaders were surveyed (n = 100) using items adapted from EP research in other disciplines. Diverse music units were found to exhibit moderate levels of EP and organizational complexity was found to be a significant factor in EP level. This study is highly significant for academic leaders in music due to the rapid evolution of the music industry and the need for higher music education to understand the complexity of its environment. The role of human error is the subject of various case studies on process safety incidents worldwide. To improve the situation and minimize the impact of human error, efforts are widely focused on the external job situation, such as job design, and the rules of rewards and punishments. Furthermore, organizations have opted to improve individual conditions such as job competencies and skills development. It is the aim of human factors engineering to maximize the potential of human performance in preventing process safety incidents. However, little attention is paid to the internal motivational process that occurs in an individual participating in the incident. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to bridge the gap and to highlight the role of motivational behavior in developing human performance or in executing actions that lead to human error. Human behavior and motivation widely vary within organizations. Therefore, organizations may benefit from the motivational theories that are widely used in the study of organizational behavior. The theoretical approach to motivation is separated into two main categories: inner motivation and outer motivation. Moreover, inner motivational theory is also subdivided into rational factors and irrational factors. The theories applied in this paper exemplify and combine the use of motivational theories in improving human performance and preventing process safety incidents. The work of teachers has historically been highly controlled, but one area teachers have been granted considerable autonomy is in instruction and planning. Teacher autonomy is a complex concept with important implications for both the quality of instruction and teacher persistence in the field. The rise of charter management organizations (CMOs) and the increasing use of scripted lesson plans (SLPs) have introduced new institutional arrangements with unknown impacts on teachers' perceptions of autonomy. This mixed method study surveyed 155 teachers across all grade levels from CMOs, independent charter, and district schools, on their perceptions of autonomy related to lesson planning. The survey responses showed that high school teachers and those who wrote their own lessons perceived the greatest autonomy, while elementary teachers and those who received SLPs perceived the lowest. Our qualitative interviews with 17 teachers complicated these findings by demonstrating how similar organizational structures could result in very different experiences of autonomy. Relationships of trust supported stronger feelings of autonomy; without trust, planning could feel restrictive or isolating. Still, teachers found spaces of autonomy within the organizational restrictions on their work. Their reflections suggest feelings of autonomy balance the increasingly limited role of teachers' work in lesson design. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND: The calls for curricula review to adequately prepare nursing graduates have increased over the last decade. In response, many nursing education institutions across the world have considered ways to review and renew their curricula. Part of these renewal processes seeks to prepare nursing graduates to function within highly dynamic and challenging environments. The aim of this study was to explore the private healthcare context as a learning environment using an organizational theory lens, with a view to informing and enhancing curriculum development and implementation in nursing education. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A qualitative case study methodology within an interpretivist paradigm was used, drawing on organizational theory. The population included educators who teach undergraduate nursing students at a private higher education institution in South Africa and managers at the clinical sites where these students undertake their clinical learning. Data collection, which was undertaken over the period 2018–2020, included observations, focus group discussions, and interviews. Thematic analysis was undertaken, and a three-tiered analytical approach was followed to analyze the data. RESULTS: Four themes were identified: the learning environment as a site of tension, a site of cultural layering, a site of role complexity, and a site of hierarchy. CONCLUSION: Nursing education is dynamic, providing a range of learning experiences. An understanding of this environment from an organizational theory perspective provides some insights into potential challenges and opportunities for learning. Curriculum developers should consider ways of optimizing the opportunities so that students can be provided with learning experiences that enhance the development of the necessary competence.

Young Black gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (YB-GBMSM) are disproportionately impacted by HIV. Structural influences on these disparities, including characteristics of the various organizations that serve YB-GBMSM living with HIV, remain understudied. We drew on Weick’s model of organizing to conduct and analyze qualitative interviews with 28 HIV service providers representing healthcare and community-based organizations in Atlanta, Georgia. Enactment of HIV service provision was described as following simplified and standardized responses-defined as “rules”, and/or more dynamic exchanges to formulate responses -otherwise known as “communication behavior cycles” (CBCs). Rules, including patient quotas and limited hours of operation, were viewed as rigid, out-of-touch, and inhibiting engagement with YB-GBMSM. CBCs, such as patient feedback loops and rejection of traditional hierarchies, fostered creative insights to combating the epidemic and increased levels of cultural awareness and community buy-in. Organizations should strive to enact CBCs, to foster culturally congruent approaches to service delivery for YB-GBMSM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Legislative professionalism is central to the politico-institutional context of postsecondary policy adoption in state governments. The core argument in existing research is that as legislative professionalism increases, structural capacity for decision-making increases. Evidence for this argument is mixed, exclusively quantitative, and assumes a bureaucratic logic. The goal of this study is to deepen understanding of legislative professionalism by examining how policy stakeholders perceive the postsecondary policy environment in a "citizen legislature." The study draws on 26 in-depth interviews with higher education stakeholders in Nevada. The findings contribute empirically to the literature by demonstrating that legislative professionalism can be understood in terms of the meanings assigned distinctive legislative environments. The results also make a conceptual contribution to this literature by showing how loose coupling in interorganizational relations and bounded rationality shape the policy environment—in ways that yield benefits for some institutions and disadvantages for others. The role of the local government within the context of engagement and collaboration with universities has largely been understudied. Employing a cross-sectional design, this study of 67 universities and 78 municipalities from 29 states examines how collaborative capacity impacts university and local government perceptions of engagement and collaboration with each other. An important yet barely explored line of research lies in elucidating how to enhance the critical performativity of Critical Management Studies (CMS) from higher education institutions. To address this question, in this article we present a case study of the Social Economy Laboratory (LAB_ES), a space created at the University of Zaragoza for the university community to experiment with initiatives and projects organized around the principles and values of the Social Economy. Specifically, the article identifies and delves into three key lines of action to promote the critical performativity of CMS from higher education spaces: (i) raising awareness among the university community of the existence of alternative forms of organization and management that are more democratic, humanistic, emancipatory, and socially responsible; (ii) developing closer collaboration between the university community and other stakeholders to collectively generate relevant and useful knowledge for social transformation; and (iii) promoting the engagement of students in alternative organization and management projects. In a context of under-representation of the Social Economy in the official curricula and research structures of Spanish higher education institutions, the article also draws some practical implications aimed at promoting training, dissemination and consultancy on Social Economy from spaces created within the boundaries of the university, but organized outside its institutional and bureaucratic rigidity. The modern supply chain is characterised by an ill-defined and porous perimeter, allowing entry points for potential adversaries to intercept sensitive information and disrupt operations. Such supply chain attacks are increasing in frequency and their impacts can be costly to an organisation. Trust between supply chain partners is commonly thought to be a risk management tool, where increasing trust results in reduced risk. However, increased trust may actually expose the supply chain to more risk, not less. In this paper, we propose the concept of the zero trust supply chain. Originating in the field of information technology and cybersecurity, a zero trust philosophy assumes that all actors and activity are untrusted. In contrast to perimeter-based security, which attempts to keep adversarial actors out, a zero trust-based security posture assumes that adversaries are already inside the system, and therefore imposes strict access and authentication requirements. In this paper, we map zero trust concepts to the supply chain, and discuss the steps an organisation might take to transition to zero trust. We set forth a research agenda by examining zero trust through the lens of several organisational theories and propose a number of research propositions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In post-Soviet countries, the perception of accounting as a service tool that performs a service function is still widespread. However, today accounting not only satisfies information needs but also ensures the formation, ordering and construction of organizational and social processes by forming a new social and organizational order. The purpose of the article is to assess the constitutive role of accounting in the activities of organizations and society, as well as to identify and analyze the directions of the constitutive influence of accounting on the innovative activity of the enterprise. Methods of comparison, analogy, modelling and historical analysis were used to achieve the goal. The methodological basis of the research is the position of the organizational theory. The historical features of the development of the views of scientists regarding the formation of the proactive and constitutive role of accounting in the functioning of socioeconomic institutions have been analyzed. It was determined that based on its constitutive role, accounting ensures the formation and ordering of organizational and social processes and constructs them through changing social and organizational relations. Using the example of improving the system of accounting rules in IFRS 16 “Leases”, an example of the implementation of the constitutive role of accounting in achieving social goals has been analyzed. Two main approaches to understanding the role of accounting in the functioning of socioeconomic institutions have been identified and analyzed. The possibility of improving the innovative activity of enterprises by changing the current method of accounting and reporting on the elements of the innovative capital of the enterprise (expenditure on research and development, internally created intangible assets) has been substantiated. The constitutive role of calculative practices in promoting the prospects for developing innovative activities of enterprises at the tactical and strategic levels has been disclosed. The constitutive influence of certain calculative practices on the innovative activity of the enterprise has been characterized by the determination of the effectiveness of innovative activity and individual innovative initiatives and projects.

Abstract The paper aims at analyzing how coordination of action is conceptualized and researched in the context of adult education. Selected perspectives from organization theory are explored with regard to their conceptualizations of coordination of action. Based on a narrative synopsis of studies from adult education research, the paper then shows that there are various actor constellations, coordination mechanisms and influencing factors marking coordination of action as a multi-faceted, multi-level and multi-perspective research phenomenon. Following, key parameters of a research program focusing on multiple coordination of action in adult education organizations are presented.
