INTIMACY (Psychology) , *HADITH , *PIETY - Abstract
This essay examines the interplay of form and content in early Islamic expressions of taqwā (translated variously as piety, or fear or consciousness of God), with a primary focus on prophetic hadith and the orations of ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib. Through this analysis, two major observations can be made. First, expressions of taqwā in these sources are indelibly corporeal, articulated through forms of bodily intimacy, whether between rider and mount, or as the cure for bodily sickness. Second, attention to both form and content and their interstices elucidates a picture of taqwā that expands our notion of embodiment to encompass the realm of the internal. Taqwā involves techniques of the limbs, tongue, eyes, and ears as well as techniques of the heart. To demonstrate this, I explore both the ways that believers are enjoined to seek taqwā as well as how taqwā is articulated as enacting transformations in/on those believers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

One cannot speak of the nineteenth-century Beirut Nahḍa and not mention Muʿallim Buṭrus al-Bustānī (1819–83). This article examines how al-Bustānī utilized the Arabic oratorical tradition and the innovative medium of print to create the Muʿallim brand. The first section analyses his Khuṭba fī Ādāb al-ʿArab (An Oration on the Culture of the Arabs, 1859) to illustrate how he operationalized the Arabic rhetorical style to position himself as an eloquent public intellectual. This article next discusses how he built parts of this lecture on sariqāt (literary thefts/legitimate borrowings) from his contemporaries and participated in the collective practice of knowledge production. Lastly, al-Bustānī's advertising tactics in print to promote his public persona are explored. This article demonstrates that al-Bustānī successfully established himself as the Muʿallim by coupling the enduring cultural power of Arabic oration with the modern might of print. This essay examines two understudied documents from eighteenth-century Lima: the 1715 and 1716 Oraciones delivered by Pedro de Peralta Barnuevo about his rectorship at San Marcos University. In their construction, both speeches capture colonial bureaucratism, transatlantic self-imagination, and baroque academicism at a mature stage in the development of colonial criollo identity. I examine these dynamics through the analysis of three rhetorical gestures: the use of classical panegyrists to establish critical similarities and differences between ancient academic institutions and San Marcos, the strategic manipulation of Latin citations, and the characterization of the history of San Marcos as a new yet deep archive. Through these strategies, I propose, Peralta suggests two different types of past: a "classical" antiquity rooted in Rome, and an "archival" antiquity that belongs to Lima. The coordination of these two pasts dramatizes the positioning of the criollo intellectual community in the transatlantic Republic of Letters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As 'inaugural Oration' the De ratione had the main objective of addressing the young scholars of the Neapolitan University, and to encourage them in cultivating modern knowledge and seeking unity. It meant to feed - among the Neapolitan jurists- the civil conscience that the phenomena of neo-feudalization had wanted differently oriented. The basic objective, however, remained the need for a gnoseological revolution and in order to do so, Vico took advantage of the reinterpretation of authors such as Plato and Augustine, Bacon, Descartes and Galileo. Extensively managed semi-natural grasslands represent species-rich habitats and therefore play a key role for the maintenance of biodiversity in agricultural areas. In marginal and poorly accessible areas, the traditional management of grassland is frequently abandoned, which leads to the spread of forest. In Southern Switzerland, terraced vineyards (a special grassland type) and terraced grasslands are part of the cultural heritage and local biodiversity hotspots. Yet, many of them are overgrown by forest. In the past years, several abandoned terraced vineyards and grasslands have been restored by removing the forest, rebuilding the walls and re-introducing the traditional management. We examined restoration success by assessing plant species richness, diversity and species composition in both the aboveground vegetation and soil seed bank in (1) restored, (2) abandoned for 25–50 years, and (3) permanently used areas of six terraced vineyards and six terraced grasslands. Plant species richness and diversity were reduced and species composition altered in the aboveground vegetation of abandoned vineyards and grasslands compared to the permanently used and restored ones. However, species richness, Shannon-diversity and species composition of the aboveground vegetation did not differ between restored and permanently used areas, indicating a successful restoration of the vegetation 10–15 years after restoration. In abandoned vineyards, species richness of plants emerging from the soil seed bank was slightly higher than in permanently used and restored vineyards. No difference in seedling species richness was found between abandoned, permanently used and restored terraced grasslands. Our results showed that the soil seed bank played a minor role for the re-establishment of the above-ground vegetation. We assume that the large species pool in the surroundings and the presence of dispersal vectors are essential for the successful passive restoration of abandoned grassland in this region. On the shelves of the Ambrosiana Library in Milan and on those of the Marciana Library in Venice lies an oration in praise of Caterina Visconti, composed and delivered by the Celestine monk Taddeo Airoldi, probably commissioned by his son Filippo Maria in 1426 (?). A text that can contribute to highlighting new, unpublished aspects regarding the importance of the Duchess of Milan during the period of her regency after the death of her husband and first Duke of Milan Gian Galeazzo. A useful source also for obtaining valuable information on Catherine's 'human' side. At the same time, this oration by Taddeo Airoldi, which also presents similarities with the works of Christine de Pizan, can represent an extremely significant document also as regards the evolution of the female eulogy and the biographies of famous women, in particular as intermediate stage between the emulations of the portraits of Giovanni Boccaccio's De mulieribus claris and the more articulated late fifteenth and sixteenth century results of the laudatory-biographical genre centered on the most noble and illustrious women., Sugli scaffali della Biblioteca Ambrosiana di Milano e su quelli della Biblioteca Marciana di Venezia giace un’orazione in lode di Caterina Visconti, composta e pronunciata dal monaco celestino Taddeo Airoldi, probabilmente su commissione di suo figlio Filippo Maria, nel 1426 (?).Un testo che può contribuire alla messa in luce di nuovi, inediti aspetti riguardanti l’importanza della duchessa di Milano nel corso del periodo della sua reggenza dopo la morte del marito e primo duca di Milano Gian Galeazzo.

- Abstract
The science of political ideology of Byzantium occupies one of the most important places among the problems currently prevailing in Byzantine studies. If we want to properly interpret Manuel’s reign, it is not enough just to know the territorial scope and ethnic composition of Byzantium in the 14
th and 15th centuries, but it is also necessary to analyze the imperial ideology. The best way to do this is to study the texts written by Manuel. In the works of the Emperor we can find letters to various friends, orations, dialogues, instructions, treatises on various topics related to state governance, the value of marriage, love for the homeland etc. All this written inheritance left by Manuel shows his exceptional erudition, patience, talent, education, and passion for the rhetoric he had and gives a new perspective of the problems of Byzantium in the 15th century. Through the example of the German language, the paper analyzes a special type of Catholic liturgical text – the Priestly Prayer during the Liturgy of Hours (oration) on the Feasts of the Doctors of the Church. The study views the prayer as a type of text and describes its socio cultural specificity. The present article analyzes the prayer on the Feasts of the Doctors of the Church for lexical grammatical models (addressings, predications, pleadings and conclusions) and the most typical compositional, grammatical, and lexical features and stylistic devices (intertextual borrowings, metaphors, metonymies, antithesis, and syntactic parallelism); and traces how they create the originality of this type of prayers.

Gregory Nazianzus and Gregory of Nyssa between them composed three orations on love of the destitute poor: Nazianzen's Oration 14, Peri philoptōchias and Nyssen's On love of the poor 1 and 2 (De beneficentia and In illud: quatenus uni ex his fecistis mihi fecistis). All three situate leprosy as the most extreme, and therefore paradigmatic, form of poverty as a basis for exhorting Christians to the practice of love. Those suffering from leprosy were stigmatised and excluded from society even by Christians, yet the Gregories exhort them to serve Christ by serving them, supporting pastoral entreaty with theological argument. This paper aims to introduce these orations to those unfamiliar with them and contribute new insights to those who already know them. After situating them in their historical context I summarise each then comment on their content, highlighting Nazianzen's reconfiguration of classical motifs in the service of a revisionist social policy and Christian anthropology rooted in the imago Dei and Nyssen's recourse to ascetic theory with marked similarities to that of Egyptian desert asceticism as taught by Evagrius. This paper's discussion of these prophetic orations will contribute to knowledge of them and by extension of the two Gregories.

In A Glossary of Contemporary Literary Theory, Jeremy Hawthorn refers to Cultural Materialism as an "umbrella term" that allows itself the opulence to utilise a wide range of tools and theories from many different disciplines. This allows us to justify the nature of both commonly acknowledged and abstruse socio-cultural episteme and discourse, one of the most prominent of which is the issue of power and power relations. This paper, which was originally part of a larger body of work on Cultural Materialism, tries to draw upon a few different theories to examine the confrontational relationship that exists between the two prominent characters of Shakespeare's (1953) Julius Caesar (namely Antony and Brutus), as represented by the duel-like orations of the two characters. The main goal of the paper is to demonstrate how Antony is able to manipulate the words of Brutus against him and thus succeed in captivating the crowd. The theoretical discussions drawn upon in this article will include Austin's (1999) ideas on language as action, Bourdieu's (1999) argument of dialogue as contest and Hutchby's (1999) findings on turn-taking strategies. This paper will also incorporate Paul Grice's Cooperative Principle, introduced in his "Logic and Conversation" (1999). This principle argues that the flouting of any of Grice's four maxims by the characters is meaningful and effective because it introduces an "implicature" in the political and social context in which the pieces of discourse take place.

Le Orazioni alla Vergine (The prayers to the Virgin) of Paolo Segneri. The cause for this essay was the finding of a devotional book of Paolo Segneri, printed in Naples in 1797. The author dwells upon the spiritual and theological life of the Jesuit scholar of the Christian doctrine, who was born in the Seventeenth Century. This book shows his eloquence ability, his engagement for the daily evangelization and his unexpected devotion to the Virgin Mary, for whom he wrote profound prayers, that have a theological and spiritual feature. PRESIDENTS of the United States , *SPEECHES, addresses, etc. , *POLITICAL parties , *HEADS of state - Abstract
One of the more fruitful avenues of research on the American presidency has come through the analysis of presidential discourse, as scholars focus on the complexity and effectiveness of the oratory style, contextualized by the mode of communication and the intended audience. Clear trends emerge in the pre- and post-sound recording eras, with presidential speech changing greatly in the twentieth century in its intended audiences and effects (Hart 1987, 2002; Lim 2002; Ryan 1995; Tulis 1987; Whittington 1997). The importance of oration is also highlighted when studying the presidential primary process within parties (Kendall 2000). Yet there is still much to learn and understand about the connection between presidential rhetoric and the mindsâand heartsâof the voters. Our paper seeks to compare presidential candidates in the post-sound recording era, in an effort to discern the effect of candidate oration on the voters' eventual choice for president. The presidential elections of 2000 and 2004 have created a commonsense wisdom about the need for the presidential candidate to speak in a manner that relates to the majority of American voters (Adair 2004). Does the conventional wisdom hold true when studied empirically? By comparing presidential candidates to each other, we can hold constant contextual factors and focus on the oration skills as a possible deciding factor in the electoral winner. We will use selected speech opportunities that replicate themselves in each electoral race, and test them with various computer programs that analyze sentence complexity and the overall "commonness" of the word choices. Our data will help to fill in a gap in the existing research by focusing on pre-presidential discourse, and our findings will be useful in showing how presidential candidates talk their way into the presidency. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Within the vast area of research relating to visual strategies as a rhetorical means par excellence, the paper deals with Cicero’s way of using the term ante oculos and other related expressions in the orations. Due to the frequent and seemingly deliberate use of these expressive means, we can assume that there was a precise communication strategy aimed at exploiting the potential of rhetoric to connect, in an effective and productive way, image and speech, visual strategies and the evocative power of words.

- Abstract
The study of rhetorical theory can lead to a deeper understanding of Baroque keyboard music. As Renaissance artists and philosophers rediscovered the classical culture of the Greeks, partly shaped by Greek rhetoricians, rhetorical study became a central part of the curriculum in European schools and universities. Many Baroque musicians such as Joachim Burmeister (1564-1629) and Johann Mattheson (1681-1764) related rhetorical practice to the music of their time. Thus, Baroque composers such as Bach, who were involved in education in schools or churches, considered the art of rhetoric to be linked with music study and may have purposely adopted rhetorical devices, translating them into analogous musical events and processes in their compositions. The Fantasia and Fugue in A minor BWV 904 and the Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue in D minor BWV 903 by J.S. Bach are regarded as important masterpieces in their length and creativity compared with the other fantasias and fugues by many musicologists including David Schulenberg and Robert L. Marshall. The Fantasia and Fugue in A minor features a strictly contrapuntal texture in the Fantasia and two contrasting subjects in the double fugue. The Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue is distinctive in terms of the extensive improvisatory styles of the Chromatic Fantasia and the free treatment of the Chromatic Fugue. An examination of J.S. Bach's Fantasia and Fugue in A minor BWV 904 and Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue in D minor BWV 903 demonstrates the ways in which classical rhetorical principles may have influenced J.S. Bach's writing, and leads the performer to a more thorough understanding of Bach's compositional techniques and more intentional, purposeful interpretative choices in performance.

During the 1630s Vincent de Paul promised Louise de Marillac that he “would send for the painter” who would create a pious image for the Daughters of Charity. The print, titled The Lord of Charity, was drawn by Charles Le Brun, engraved by Pierre Daret and printed in 1640 by Antoine Hérault, who was close to the noble women of the Vincentian congregation. It represents Christ standing on a cloud on which is inscribed “For Christ’s love compels us. Cor. 2, 5”. His presence is protecting the Daughters of Charity, who are placed in the background, tending to the sick in a hospital. Widely disseminated within the community and copied on many occasions by its members, the engraving was designed to spiritually educate the “country girls” who had committed themselves to Vincent de Paul as “servants of the poor”.

In the process of determining the place and importance of György Verestói (1698-1765; orator and reformed bishop of Transylvania) this study aims to formulate certainties by using the results of research history. The figure of the orator - despite his contemporary popularity - has nowadays faded. Most encyclopaedias contain mistaken information about Verestói and in the public consciousness of literary history there are lots of controversial facts about the topic. Moreover, his works are not separated; most databases, libraries merge his oeuvre with the younger Verestói's one. The most important result of this research is that - having found the original Latin manuscript of the author's autobiography -- it can reassuringly clear up the questions related to the biography. Whaley, Joachim
- Abstract
The implementation of the toleration mandate in 1785–6 marked a true watershed in the history of Hamburg. The struggle for the liberties it granted had dominated the city since before 1600. The gradual realisation of the mandate's constitutional implications was to preoccupy the city's elite for much of the following century. Of course, both before and after 1785, other issues also stand out, and certainly other European developments had a crucial bearing on Hamburg's evolution. But from the point of view of the local dignitary, whether in the secular or in the ecclesiastical domain, the present was interpreted and articulated in primarily religious terms. The city's relationship with its non-Lutheran minorities thus provided a touchstone on which attitudes were tested and broader issues defined. For this reason the debate over religious toleration can only be fully understood in the context of the broad social and cultural development of early modern Hamburg. This chapter will thus amplify many of the problems raised in the first five chapters, and, by looking at the self-image of the city, explore some of the political, social and cultural dimensions of the debate. One major question arises from much of the analysis above: why did it take so long to concede so little? Throughout, it might seem that the battle lines were relatively clearly drawn. Pericles's Funeral Oration in 431 BC praises Athens's values (dialogue, citizens' participation, democracy) against Spartan oligarchy during the Peloponnesian War. Only a few months after the oration was delivered, a terrible plague decimated Athenian democracy and ended Pericles's life. O Discurso fúnebre de Péricles (431 a. minila bit tjan kin-ning wurrkama gu? Are we all working together with a united voice for treaty & truth? The Tyikma (Indigenous) and non-Indigenous cultures are akin to joint arrangements and ought to be reciprocal. Oral and non-verbal traditional cultural ways of nurturing and caring for the nourishment of our spiritual beings in the landscape must sustain our Tyikma (Indigenous) ways of knowing, being and doing. These are not unencumbered by non-productive elements or barriers to voice, treaty and truth. The ultimate aim is to work together for a shared future – a vision laid down by our ancestral beings and those that followed in the past, such as Dr Charles Perkins AO, for a vision of hope. Charles’ hope was to provide a better future for his children and countrymen across this nation and elsewhere. He was an inspiration. He led the famous Freedom Rides in the 60’s and travelled abroad to influence people and to change the way people thought about First Australians. The way to communicate our hope is on a platform that continues to build what iconic figures have started. The actions of Charles Perkins weaved onto existing threads that continue the representation of our united voices, treaty and truth. These are depicted in our Australian and global societies today through people, policies and places. Today, we are the ones to continue making the choices about which threads to add to the social fabric of Indigenous Affairs. It’s about the words, the languages and non-verbal communication methods we use to design and develop our future people, policy and place. The Scienza nuova (1730/44) is commonly approached as a work of philosophy, interpreted in terms typically employed to understand other major philosophical books. I consider the Scienza nuova as an extended, written oration, with the order of its five books corresponding to the parts of forensic or judicial oration as presented in Vico’s textbook on rhetoric, Institutiones oratoriae. Vico’s new science requires a new way of thinking about the civil world. It advances its principles not on the basis of philosophical analytics but by means of rhetorical speech.

The present article is a treatise on the illuminating voyage of a Neurophysician along the fascinating horizons and frontiers of neurosciences. During the career as a clinical neurologist, some very interesting and intriguing cases and issues were dealt with and documented scientifically. The working of the brain and its operational architectonics came up for critical analysis, opening up new vistas in the appreciation and management of various neurological disorders. Issues regarding the working of the mind and the guidelines for health and happiness became apparent, and some very interesting generalizations with far-reaching consequences on the general well-being and health have been formulated and put forward for a healthy and happy future for mankind. A paradigm shift is warranted for a closer and better appreciation of neural dynamics at all levels of the brain, namely microscopic, mesoscopic and macroscopic levels!

Color Doppler USG of the scrotum has been demonstrated to be useful in the diagnosis of scrotal lesions. Gray-scale USG characterizes the lesions as testicular or extratesticular and, with color Doppler and power Doppler, flow and perfusion can also be assessed. Color Doppler is particularly helpful in acute painful conditions, where it can differentiate testicular ischemia from inflammatory conditions and thus prevent unnecessary surgical explorations. With color Doppler, useful information can be gained about vascularity in testicular malignancies. Color Doppler also has high sensitivity and high specificity in the diagnosis of lesions like varicoceles.

47. Boyce Worthley Oration. 'Drawing the line': A risk communication perspective
- Author

- Abstract
The paper represents a text version of the Australian Radiation Protection Society's Boyce Worthley Oration, which I had the privilege of delivering in 2014. The purpose of the presentation was to address the issue of whether, from a risk communication perspective, enough radiation protection research had been conducted and it was time to 'draw the line'. The paper addresses this issue by focusing on the radiofrequency (RF) risk communication domain, but is also applicable to radiation protection more generally. It fi rst provides a brief overview of both community concern about RF and the relative support from science regarding this concern, where it is argued that the science does not provide support for such concern. It then looks at some of the reasons for this discrepancy, and argues that it is due to the very complex, very 'normal' ways that humans process information and create meaning from it, but which consequently also leads to error and limits the applicability of specifi c communication strategies to the community more generally. Drawing the above conclusions together the paper then argues that regardless of how certain RF health research outcomes are or could in principle be in the future, there will remain a strong need to adapt to the complexity of people's interpretation of the science, and that this will necessitate both further RF risk communication and RF basic science research; it concludes that no line can be drawn. On a more positive note the paper also looks at what risk communication is doing in the RF domain, and provides some practical advice aimed at improving risk communication outcomes.

[first paragraph of article] Thank you so much, Professor Yacoub. It’s a great honor for me to participate in this conference. I thank you for your vision and your tremendous energy and for everything that you have and are and will accomplish in cardiovascular surgery and science. I’m going to talk about the first century of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and will emphasize my experience during the last decades of this century. Few people realize that the first patient with HCM was described in 1869, during the reign of Queen Victoria. The great physician, William Osler, was four years old. Winston Churchill had not yet been born. The electrocardiogram and cardiac catheterization were 35 and 60 years in the future, respectively. But, in the Medical Gazette of Paris, a paper appeared, which was entitled Cardiac Sub-Aortic Stenosis by Henri Liouville [1] and which described a 75-year-old woman who developed worsening dyspnea over several days. On physical examination, she had a systolic heart murmur. She died shortly after presentation.
