This paper explores the potential of participatory methods and practices to address the methodological difficulties surrounding the historical geographies of dance, and moving bodies, within archival research. Dance has long challenged traditional notions of the ‘archive’. While non‐representational cultural geographers have privileged dance's ability to generate affect and embodied expression, historical geographers have predominantly struggled to engage with moving bodies through traditionally ‘disembodied’ archives. Ephemeral and embodied, dance escapes conventional historical documentation; this methodological challenge demands a more creative, participatory, and more‐than‐representational approach to historical geography and its privileging of the ‘archive’. Focusing on tap dance and its circum‐Atlantic performance, this paper will explore how bodily encounters with and within the archive can lead to new research questions, through contemporary embodied participation in creative practices. By combining participatory approaches with more‐than‐representational historical geographies, it is possible to reconcile the history and politics of dancing bodies with corporeal and affective dimensions of the past. This dual approach demands working with creative communities as a researcher, in the past and the present, to draw out previously marginalised voices. This paper discusses three specific methods: oral histories and records of lived experiences; approaching the ‘body’ as an archive; and fostering public historical geographies, including walking tours, memorials, and festival participation. To date, there has been little research on the history of work-related mental health issues among coal workers. Much of the coal extraction industry peaked during the early twentieth century and then began its precipitous decline. Mining has high casualty rates, and the medical field did not understand the long-term effects of psychological trauma on mine workers until recently. Newspaper articles and other historical records provide accounts of accidents and tragedies. Heroism is often emphasized in recalling tragic episodes at the expense of recording the emotional stress suffered by survivors. A diverse set of historical sources provides a context for work-related mental health issues in the coal extraction industry. Probing a set of historic oral histories of coal workers and creating analogies to current studies provide additional clues about the under-told story of these historic actors’ general health and well-being. While incorporating oral histories from other regions, focusing on the anthracite coal industry in northeastern Pennsylvania allows us to identify historical actors and helps us think differently about other working-class communities impacted by industrial capitalism. The Clarence River (New South Wales, Australia) was the main transport corridor for the timber and sugar cane industries operating in the catchment from the 1860s to the 1970s. Using archaeological, documentary, and oral historical resources we explore some of the anthropogenic impacts of these industries upon the fluvial geomorphology of the lower Clarence River. In particular, the deliberate abandonment of obsolete vessels on the river system is a focus. These discarded former cane and timber barges have been used as erosion control devices in several areas around the Harwood Island sugar mill, resulting in the accumulation of sediments and the establishment of mangrove environments in what were degraded areas. Virtual Reality (VR) technology has revolutionized the preservation and interpretation of heritage sites. This study focuses on developing an immersive 360-degree virtual tour (VT) for the USS Drum Submarine Museum in Mobile, Alabama, USA, incorporating oral histories to enhance the accessibility and visitor experiences. The project addresses the need for innovative methods to present maritime history effectively. Using Matterport technology, detailed 3D imagery of the USS Drum was captured and processed, integrating multimedia elements and oral histories from a veteran USS Drum crew member to provide a richer historical narrative. A user experience study gathered feedback from virtual visitors, who offered quantitative and qualitative responses. The research findings indicate that the VT significantly enhances visitor engagement and historical understanding, with high satisfaction rates for visual quality and oral histories, though some users experienced technical challenges and difficulties. This study demonstrates the potential of combining immersive VTs with oral histories to create engaging educational experiences, preserving the USS Drum's legacy and making it accessible to a broader audience, including those unable to visit in person. This paper is based on ethnographic fieldwork and collected oral histories in 2019 in the Lofoten islands, as well as on archival research. I investigate the complex creation of kinship networks between humans and skrei in the Lofoten islands. I argue that the constant struggle to survive for both fish and fishermen embedded in larger capitalist ecologies of exploitation creates a symbolic shared substance between fish and fishermen, which, despite the often-unequal antagonistic nature of their relationships, allows us to rethink of definitions of kinship between humans and nonhuman others. The advent of deinstitutionalisation and the introduction of community care in the latter part of the twentieth century have revolutionised mental-health service provision across Europe, although implementation, timing and services have varied widely in different countries. This article compares the changing dimensions of mental-health provision in post-independence Ireland with that in England, and will shed light on the current state of mental healthcare in both countries. This article aims to problematize the concept of Canadian multiculturalism from its inception in 1971 to its current tendencies and determine whether this policy is still attainable by referring to significant views of Hall, Taylor, Duchastel, Perin, Clifford, Drache, Hoyos and Kymlicka. These theoretical insights are explored in the case of the Serbian diaspora in Canada. The study is based on the oral histories of the members of the first generation of Serbian immigrants to Canada, conducted in July 2008 in Toronto. Bennett's Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity is used as a theoretical framework. The results show that the first generation of Serbian immigrants shares stronger ties with the mother country than their descendants; however, respect for the values of diversity and hybridity contributes to the process of making inter-generational differences less conspicuous which, regarding the Serbian diasporic community, represents a proof of the topicality of the Canadian multicultural experiment. This paper extends Critical Race Feminista Methodological (CRFM) approaches by contending that convivencias− the coexistence necessary for creating relationships in the field − are an integral part of engaging research collaborators within educational historical research. Drawing on oral histories with Chicana/o librarians, personal collections, and archival sources, I outline the convivencias I shared with librarians that span across spatial and temporal dimensions. These interactions were centered on recollecting, remembering, and learning about the activism within Latina/o/x chidlren's literture and librarianship's history. Convivencias across space were possible through diverse interactions, such as in-person meetings, phone conversations, video conferences, and emails. Convivencias across time are represented by the continuity of sustained efforts to advance social justice in librarianship across multiple decades. The conceptualization of convivencias across space and time emerged as a CRFM tool that aims to center seldomly documented narratives of activism essential for fostering connections, cultivating community memories, and nuancing historical educational research. The links between lack of access to WASH (water, sanitation, hygiene) and adverse health outcomes is well documented. There is a recent nascent literature on the links between water security and gender-based violence (GBV) that is relatively sparse; this is surprising given firstly that the global water issue is quintessentially a gendered one and secondly that we know this to be a major issue for women particularly in Sub Saharan Africa. This paper reports on the lived experiences of seniors through oral histories (n = 25) with a particular focus on WASH and gender-based violence using Kisian, Kenya as a case study. Results reveal concerns due to inadequate access to safe water and sanitation facilities and also perceptions of structural gender-based violence where participants reported feeling marginalized by government due to lack of supply of clean piped water. The results also reveal that women are excluded from water governance. In conclusion, gender mainstreaming in water resource management and financial support for gender equity should be adopted by all relevant actors in the WASH sector, particularly given our learnings from the COVID 19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought to light the importance of hindsight in response to global health crises. Although globalization has amplified worldwide perspectives, many lessons learned from past outbreaks in Indigenous communities have been overlooked. Oral histories are deeply rooted traditions that have played a significant role in the health practices of Indigenous communities across Canada. These practices can provide valuable insights into past epidemics or casualty events and their short- to long-term impacts. They have shaped responses to COVID-19, with Indigenous communities implementing self-determination efforts, such as community closures, contact tracing, and isolation measures. These traditions have heavily influenced population health practices in other contexts, such as the 1700 Cascadia earthquake, smallpox, and tuberculosis outbreaks. However, challenges remain in facilitating disease data transparency and Indigenous sovereignty. Efforts should be made to promote recognizing and respecting Indigenous knowledge and practices within the broader health system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, I analyse the life narratives of three Estonian women who identify as either lesbian or bisexual. Based on three semi-structured in-depth interviews, I focus on the period when the local LGBTQ+ movement became active, during the 1980s and 1990s, after half a century of Soviet dominance that had crumbled and Estonia regained independence. The process of growing older, combined with the individual's biography, along with added depths of memory and critical reflection, are key elements in interpreting the social significance of their personal experiences. This article aims to broaden joint performances of talk-story, a form of Indigenous Research Methodology, to give voice to non-indigenous participants who presuppose misrepresentation in qualitative research. Indigenous Research Methodologies emerged to challenge axiological concerns with Western Research Methodologies, which participants perceive to disregard, oppress, and exploit those they claim to represent. Founded on the principle of relational accountability, Indigenous Research Methodologies place learning co-created knowledges and social epistemologies at the center of the study, promoting the publication of authentic explanations and representations that empower participants. In response to grounded theories emerging from talk-story with non-indigenous members of the global surfing tribe, describing their anger and powerlessness against cultural studies researchers who deceive and misrepresent them in a perceived culture war, I explain how non-indigenous researchers and disempowered populations can jointly perform talk-story to co-create depictions that survive participant scrutiny. However, I caution that influential gatekeepers will execute Western a priori assertions and cultural imperialism to silence opposing voices and epistemologies empowered by talk-story. Nonetheless, my article aims to contribute towards promoting performances of talk-story methodology by explaining how an indigenous paradigm enables analytical processes to be shared, thus exposing insights participants perceive to be silenced by Western Research Methodologies. Abstract Oral history indicates that a large wooden trough held in storage at the University of Kentucky’s William S. Webb Museum of Anthropology was a component of the saltpeter mining operation in Mammoth Cave in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, worked largely by enslaved persons. We used multiple heritage science methods, including radiocarbon wiggle-match dating, tree-ring dating, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM–EDS), and optical scanning, combined with historical research, to examine the trough. Our analysis supports the oral history of the trough as an artifact of the mining system in Mammoth Cave. This case study illustrates how heritage science methods can provide corroboration for the origins and biographies of poorly documented historical artifacts.

The theme of the dialogue is devoted to the image of the city of Bălți, as it is revealed through the results of studying the “small histories” of those who personally knew the period of deportations and whose victims they were. The experience of researching the memory of the victims of the totalitarian-communist regime in the Moldavian SSR and the analysing of new sources of historical research – the oral history testimonies – made it possible to investigate some undervalued layers, but with the deep potential to penetrate into the human dimension of history and the histories of those who have lived in Soviet-administered Bălți. The memory carried by the families that passed through the Soviet occupation in the city of Bălți in 1940–1941 and 1944–1991, respectively, is part of the today city’s historical heritage. By erecting monuments, organizing commemorative actions or thematic events, the places of memory will keep alive the memory of the victims of the Soviet occupation regime and the connection between the generations of Bălți residents. At the same time, these actions will build a European culture of memory, integrated into the European cultural heritage.

Institutions that house Indigenous oral histories are often ignorant to the harm they perpetuate by treating these materials without rooting curatorial considerations in Indigenous approaches to knowledge. Issues of categorization, attribution, and access, among many others, often go unaddressed, causing serious harm to Indigenous peoples and their cultural resources. It is imperative that Western archives, libraries, and museums seek out alternatives to systems that perpetuate settler-colonialism, and work to place control of oral histories back in Indigenous hands. In this paper we present several considerations for working with Indigenous oral histories in Western archives, provide case studies that promote the ethical curation and sharing of Indigenous materials, and close with an overview of our current work to revitalize and redress a large collection of Native American oral histories presently housed at the University of Florida. Advances in text mining and natural language processing methodologies have the potential to productively inform historical archaeology and oral history research. However, text mining methods are largely developed in the context of contemporary big data and publicly available texts, limiting the applicability of these tools in the context of historical and archaeological interpretation. Given the ability of text analysis to efficiently process and analyze large volumes of data, the potential for such tools to meaningfully inform historical archaeological research is significant, particularly for working with digitized data repositories or lengthy texts. Using oral histories recorded about a half-century ago from the anthracite coal mining region of Pennsylvania, USA, we discuss recent methodological developments in text analysis methodologies. Interviews and focus groups are the mainstay of qualitative research, but may not capture fully the perspectives of participants when investigating complex social phenomena. Increasingly visual elicitation techniques, including Rich Pictures, are being utilised to further explore tacit perspectives. Two key questions around Rich Pictures were considered: 'What are the affordances and constraints of using Rich Pictures to uncover tacit perspectives?' and 'Moving forward, how can we most effectively use Rich Pictures in future research?' This case study answers these questions by reflecting on our experiences while conducting research into the complex social phenomena of leadership in health professions education. Through our reflections on using Rich Pictures, the research participants' experience, and in-depth literature exploration of Rich Pictures, the affordances and constraints of this data collection tool are examined. Furthermore, the considerations needed when using Rich Pictures are expounded before providing a set of guiding recommendations for those considering using Rich Pictures in their qualitative research. Remembering Refuge: Between Sanctuary and Solidarity is a counter-archive based on oral history interviews with people who crossed the Canada-US border to seek refuge and advocacy groups working at this border in two moments of crisis: the 1980s Central American crisis and the 2017-19 crisis at Roxham Road. This paper foregrounds counter-archiving as a methodology, building from the oral histories to illustrate how borders and bordering practices are navigated and contested and how these lived experiences push back at state-directed logics and narratives of migration. By drawing connections across past and present struggles over mobilities and borders, we offer a critical genealogy of refuge around the Canada-US border. The oral histories collectively and individually contest state-led narratives of migration as a 'crisis,' the need for borders to be further securitized, and specifically of the Canadian state's generous humanitarianism towards a select few. We introduce the methodological choices, contexts, and limitations of the project's research design, and present two themes that emerged from the oral histories: the contested element of 'choice' in migration movements and the important roles played by resistance and refusal in the working out of borders. Finally, we emphasize that relationships between borders are crucial to understanding the histories of asylum around this border, and the political shift activated by the counterarchive of centering borders as lived, experienced, contested or refused. This interview essay highlights the experience of a Black/African American family currently navigating heirs' property challenges in Pantego, North Carolina. This intergenerational conversation between the Riddick family historian, Lydia Whitley, and family archivist, Quay Weston, details the past, present, and future of roughly forty acres of farmland that local residents call Riddick Town. As the family works together to prevent any potential threats of land loss, this intimate conversation serves as a critical reminder of the importance of preserving sacred family spaces. The literature is rife with problematizations of researcher positionality (Lin, 2015 ; Milner IV, 2007 ; Sheldon, 2017). The discussion of positionality ranges from researchers not acknowledging their own and others' positionality (Lin, 2015 ; Milner IV, 2007), being aware of the position of research studies one reads (Lin, 2015), or not continually deconstructing one's own identity throughout the course of the research they conduct (Sheldon, 2017). We confront the issue through the lens of a collaborative critical autoethnography between burgeoning researchers. As racialized cis-women in the academy, we examine our experiences through the interstices of belonging – nominally excluded from belonging in both the academy and the community. Through this work, we confront the question of how we, as racialized cis-women in the academy, confront and navigate the complex dynamics of race, class, and gender when approaching research in our own communities. Our experiences are framed within critical race theory, which assists in demonstrating the ways in which the racialized and gendered dynamics of marginalization in an seemingly inclusive academy are contrasted with the racialized and gendered dynamics of inclusion in ostensibly exclusionary communities. This work extends our knowledge of how individual researchers begin to make sense of it all. Moreover, through this work, our hope for this paper is for those in academia to see themselves, or their colleagues, but also to serve as validation for those yet to come who share these tensions. Abstract The geomorphological dynamism of estuarine landscapes provides challenges to archaeologists trying to understand the long-term, intertwined histories of people and place in these ecotones. This is especially the case in regions like the Northwest Coast of North America, where the location of the interface between river and coast has shifted in tandem with changing relative sea level (RSL) positions in the late Pleistocene through the Holocene. We explore the deep-time landscape and settlement histories of the estuarine landscapes of Laxgalts’ap, a culturally significant place for the Gitga’at First Nation on the northern coast of British Columbia, Canada, by melding archaeological, paleoenvironmental, and oral historical knowledge. Using geological data and GIS modeling, we document the evolution of the estuary at Laxgalts’ap in the context of a transformation from a marine channel to an inlet and then a river valley over the last 14,500 years. Our archaeological surveys revealed evidence of human occupation that is over 10,600 years old and spans the Holocene, demonstrating the long-term connections to estuarine areas that are also reflected in Gitga’at oral traditions. This study demonstrates how, with careful attention to geomorphological processes and landscape change, we can document deep-time cultural connections to place, even in the most dynamic landscapes. This article explores the role of Millwall FC as a reference point for a working-class population feeling increasingly marginalised in the post-industrial city. The analysis is framed by, respectively, Sandra Wallman's continuum between open and closed urban systems, developed in the 1980s, and Edward Soja's concept of a multi-scalar view that offers an understanding of smaller geographical areas within a wider urban context. Overall, it can be argued that post-industrial dynamics, in particular the loss of industrial, inner-city employment and changes to housing stock and tenure patterns, have triggered a general move towards more open urban systems, thereby challenging the continued relevance of the open–closed continuum. With the closed system still existing in small 'pockets' of memories and nostalgia, Millwall fan culture represents one of few remaining closed systems, keeping alive memories of the docklands, and with Millwall support as a 'blood tradition', practiced across generations. But it is very much a pocket of the past. Where Millwall emerged as a club of its immediate neighbourhoods, this geographical area is now characterised by widespread gentrification and a rapidly increasing BAME population. With an increasing proportion of Millwall fans now located in Kent, Millwall FC has come to represent a last working-class bastion in South London. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Federal and local campaigns to reform "distressed" high-rise public housing in the late twentieth century resulted in the elimination of thousands of public housing units from cities like Baltimore. Those reform campaigns often defined "distress" in cultural terms, imagining Black women residents as imperiled actors, public housing as an impediment to building normative family life, and housing demolition and privatization as a necessary and normalizing corrective. Oral histories with residents living in these disinvested spaces offer counternarratives and demonstrate how Black women residents theorized their own conditions, fashioned material political demands independent of policy makers and housing reformers, and worked to put these demands into practice. This piece reflects on the mutual aid organizing of two former residents of Baltimore's George B. Murphy Homes. Specifically, it analyzes the practical work they did to address the conditions that disinvestment produced, and the intellectual work they did to fashion a materialist vision for housing reform that pushed back against the drive toward demolition and privatization. The life history approach, a common interviewing method within the social sciences, involves collecting longitudinal data retrospectively by seeking an individual's account of their life over different periods of time. The exploratory, in-depth and narrative nature of life history interviews make it a compelling narrative method that can illicit rich and in-depth data and understanding (of the "other" and self). At the same time, this attribute raises various ethical complexities that must be considered. This paper documents the personal and professional reflections of a research team conducting life history interviews for a specific research project. For many young adults in the UK, austerity has restricted capacities to access secure housing, employment and social welfare, with sharp implications for reproduction and reproductive futures. Exploring these lived reproductive experiences, this article develops a conceptual framework that brings together social reproduction, emotional labour and relational work in new ways, specifically through the concept of 'carrying'. Carrying, I argue, beholds a range of embodied, emotional and laborious qualities that are required for contemporary social reproduction. To demonstrate, I draw on research based in the North East of England, as an area that has seen detrimental cuts in the name of austerity and has some of the lowest fertility rates in the UK. Empirical examples come from 12 in-depth Oral History and Future interviews, a technique specifically developed to explore present-day narratives about (not) having any or more children. It is argued that the emotional, embodied and relational labour of carrying is key to understanding the experience of reproduction in this context, particularly regarding (1) carrying possibilities, (2) carrying bodies and (3) carrying instabilities. These forms of labour often go unnoticed and unchecked and yet can shed new light on reproduction. To close, I argue that because the labour of reproduction is carried forward into the life-course, reproductive futures are yet another way in which social inequalities can widen further under austerity. With the emergence of COVID-19 in the U.S., many LGBTQ people found ourselves reflecting upon the early years of HIV/AIDS and how our communities responded to the lack of robust federal and state response to this preceding public health crisis. As the leaders of the Bradbury-Sullivan LGBT Community Center (BSC) in eastern Pennsylvania became a central resource for our community sharing up-to-date information about COVID-19 and organizing vaccine clinics, they also recognized the historic nature of this moment as many elders in our community consistently tried to make sense of the current crisis by contemplating their past AIDS activism and organizing. In March of 2020, BSC staff and archivists received grant funding to conduct an oral history project called “40 Years of Public Health in the LGBTQ Community: Collecting and Curating Local LGBTQ Health Experiences From HIV/AIDS to COVID-19,” which recorded both timely commentary on the impact of COVID-19 on LGBTQ people and memories of HIV/AIDS organizing that seemed urgent and relevant to our contemporary moment. Offering excerpts from oral histories collected in 2020, this piece explores how COVID-19 spurred LGBTQ people in the Lehigh Valley to share stories about communal grief, health inequity, political responses to pandemics, and organizing to support the health of minoritized communities.

Agricultural practices in northern Sudan have been changing rapidly but remain little documented. In this paper we aim to investigate changes to crops grown in living memory and their uses through interviews with Nubian farmers on the island of Ernetta. By exploring cultivation and crop processing practices, together with associated material culture and foodstuffs, we also seek to explore how agricultural and food heritage are connected, and to better understand reasons for crop changes. Several cereals and pulses that were previously important subsistence crops are now grown as comparatively minor crops. The replacement of the sagia (waterwheel) by diesel pump irrigation, the introduction of commercial crops, and the reduction of the annual flood have led to fundamentally new cropping patterns within household farms. At the same time, each species has its own narrative and timing of change. Shifts in crops grown are paralleled by transitions in foodways, associated material culture, and land use. The project is timely, as much of the information about past crop uses resides in the memories of elderly farmers. The findings highlight the broader global need to document endangered memories of cropping patterns, traditional ecological and food knowledge, including local terms for foods and crops. The University of Nevada, Las Vegas Libraries' Special Collections and Archives has a collection of over three thousand oral history interviews. Previous cataloging procedures provided limited discoverability to these interviews that prioritized access to physical transcripts. New workflows established for the management and description of archival collections provided the opportunity to revisit cataloging practices for oral history interviews. This article discusses local considerations, challenges, and workflows involved in access and discoverability of individual oral history interviews in a variety of physical formats, using exported metadata from ArchivesSpace to create the basis of an original MARC record in OCLC's WorldCat.
