Background: Nowadays, stabilization splints for the management of bruxism and temporomandibular disorders (TMD) can be produced utilizing a digital workflow comprising a digital impression of the teeth, digital splint design, and computer-aided manufacturing of the splints. The latter is usually a milling process, however, more recently 3D printing gained popularity due to its better cost and time efficiency. It remains unknown whether 3D printed stabilization splints are inferior to milled splints regarding clinical outcomes. Methods: This clinical trial assesses the non-inferiority of 3D printed occlusal splints compared to milled occlusal splints in a monocentric prospective randomized single-blinded crossover trial with two cohorts. One cohort includes 20 participants with bruxism, the other 20 participants with pain-related TMD, i.e., myalgia, myofascial pain, or arthralgia of the jaw muscles/the temporomandibular joint(s) diagnosed according to the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD). Michigan-type stabilization splints are fabricated in a digital workflow by milling or 3D printing using CE-marked materials within their intended purpose. The participants wear a milled and a 3D printed splint in a randomized order for 3 months each, with follow-up visits after 2 weeks and 3 months. Investigated outcome parameters are oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) evaluated by the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-G14), participant satisfaction as rated on a visual analog scale, therapeutic efficacy, and technical result of the splints. In this context, therapeutic efficacy means antagonist wear and—in the TMD group—reduction of pain/disability assessed by the Graded Chronic Pain Scale (GCPS v2.0) and clinical assessment following the DC/TMD standard, while technical outcome measures splint fit, wear and fracture rate. Discussion: The trial will provide important information on the clinical outcome of 3D printed stabilization splints in comparison to milled splints and will, therefore, enable an evidence-based decision in favor of or against a manufacturing process. This, in turn, will guarantee for a maximum of the patient's OHRQoL during splint therapy, therapeutic efficacy, and longevity of the splints. Objectives: Our research intended to explore the association and mediators (perceived social support and sleep quality) between the impact of oral health‐related quality of life (OHRQoL) and depression among Chinese older adults. Methods: A stratified, multi‐stage random sampling approach was used in our study. A total of 3896 older individuals aged 60 years and older were included. Process macro 3.5 for SPSS was utilized for testing mediation hypotheses. Results: The mean score of the OHRQoL of the elderly was 3.26 ± 7.15. The correlation coefficient between OHRQoL and depression was 0.25 (p < 0.001). Perceived social support (β = 0.009, 95% CI = 0.006, 0.012) and sleep quality (β = 0.073, 95% CI = 0.074, 0.093) mediated the relationship between OHRQoL and depression, respectively. The association between OHRQoL and depression was mediated sequentially by perceived social support and sleep quality (β = 0.004, 95% CI = 0.002, 0.006). Conclusions: The participants reported relatively good OHRQoL. OHRQoL and depression showed a significant positive correlation. The relationship between OHRQoL and depression among Chinese seniors was mediated by perceived social support and sleep quality. Both directly and indirectly, OHRQoL can affect depression. Purpose: To evaluate the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of individuals diagnosed with Fanconi anemia (FA). Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with FA patients from two Brazilian referral centers. Participants underwent a complete dental, periodontal, and oral mucosa examination, as well as assessment of resting salivary flow. The short version of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) questionnaire was administered. Descriptive and bivariate analyses were performed, followed by multivariate analysis to examine the impact of independent variables on OHRQoL. Results: The study included 20 (57.1%) males and 15 (42.9%) females, with a mean age of 18.9 years. Oral leukoplakia (OL) was found in 18 individuals. The overall OHIP-14 score was 9.9 ± 10.5. Individuals aged ≥ 16 years had higher OHIP-14 scores, indicating worse OHRQoL for physical pain (p = 0.007), psychological discomfort (p = 0.001), physical disability (p = 0.03), psychological disability (p = 0.001), handicap (p = 0.004), and overall score (p = 0.007). Females reported more negative OHRQoL than males for physical pain (p = 0.02), psychological discomfort (p = 0.03), psychological disability (p = 0.009), and overall score (p = 0.02). Individuals with OL had an overall OHIP-14 score 1.83 times higher than those without OL (95% CI: 1.02–3.28; p = 0.04). Lower salivary flow correlated with higher overall OHIP-14 scores (95% CI: 0.14–0.84; p = 0.01). Conclusion: This study represents the first attempt to evaluate OHRQoL in individuals with FA. The presence of OL and reduced salivary flow were identified as predictors of a negative impact on OHRQoL. Dental and orofacial trauma among the adult population constitutes a major public health problem. The impact is not just physical but also psychological. To analyse the impacts of dental and orofacial trauma on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in adults and determine whether the 2 variables are closely interlinked. This is a systematic review. The terms "dental trauma", "orofacial trauma", "oral health", "oral health related impact life", "OHRQoL", "positive and negative affect scale", "quality of life", "facial injuries", "adults", and "young adults" were researched in the databases of PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus and Google Scholar for associated studies up to December 30, 2022. A comprehensive search was designed and the articles were independently screened for eligibility by 2 reviewers. The included studies' author, year of publication, the country where the study was conducted, population demographics (number and age), an instrument used for assessing OHRQoL and the relevant result were recorded and compared. The quality of the evidence was assessed using Joanna Briggs Institute checklist for observational studies. Out of 482 unique records, 3 articles were included for data extraction. Observational studies were included. Two studies did not mention confounding factors. Different scales were used for dental and orofacial trauma and OHRQoL. OHRQoL has a directly proportional relationship with orofacial trauma. Adolescents with orofacial trauma have a significant impact on this value with a prevalence of 88.4%. The highest impact on OHRQoL was seen immediately after the diagnosis of an orofacial trauma. The impact increases with the severity of the trauma. Therefore, to promote overall dental and general health, health education initiatives should include information on the causes, prevention, and requirement for prompt responses by the populace in seeking dental intervention. (1) Objective: This study aimed to investigate how patients' perceptions of their dental aesthetics and their sense of self-esteem are related. (2) Methods: This cross-sectional survey recruited 141 new patients seeking orthodontic treatment. Patients completed a self-administered questionnaire consisting of three parts: the Malaysian Psychosocial Impact of Dental Aesthetics Questionnaire (PIDAQ), Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale (RSES-M), and Aesthetics Component of the Index of Orthodontics Treatment Need (IOTN-AC). Clinical assessment comprised the Dental Health Component of the Index of Orthodontics Treatment Need (IOTN-DHC). Multiple linear regression was performed, with self-esteem as the dependent variable, while the independent variables comprised the domains of PIDAQ; IOTN-AC; IOTN-DHC; and patients' demographics, such as age, gender, and their level of education. (3) Results: The response rate was 96.5% (n = 136 respondents). The multiple linear regression found that, when the other predictors in the model are held constant, Social Impact, Aesthetic Concern, and Dental Self-Confidence are the factors that significantly contributed to explaining the variation in self-esteem, accounting for, 3.9%, 2.3%, and 2.0%, respectively. Background The improvement of oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) is a crucial aspect of prosthodontic treatment. This study aims to compare the OHRQoL of patients using conventional dentures versus implant-supported overdentures. Materials and Methods A total of 30 edentulous patients from Bhagalpur District, Bihar, participated in this study. Patients were randomly assigned to two groups: Group A (n=15) received conventional dentures, and Group B (n=15) received implant-supported overdentures. The OHRQoL was assessed using the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) questionnaire at baseline, 3 months, and 6 months post-treatment. Data were analyzed using paired t-tests and ANOVA to evaluate the differences within and between groups over time. Results At baseline, the mean OHIP-14 score for Group A was 28.5 ± 4.2, and for Group B was 27.8 ± 3.9, indicating no significant difference (p>0.05). At 3 months, Group A showed a mean score of 22.3 ± 3.5, while Group B had a significantly lower mean score of 15.7 ± 2.8 (p<0.01). At 6 months, the scores further improved, with Group A at 18.9 ± 3.1 and Group B at 10.2 ± 2.4, indicating a highly significant difference (p<0.001). The implant-supported overdenture group consistently reported better OHRQoL scores across all time points. Background Diabetes mellitus often leads to compromised oral health, including higher risks of tooth loss and periodontal disease. Dental prostheses, such as dentures, are commonly used to restore function and aesthetics in edentulous patients. This study aims to compare the efficacy of mandibular implant-supported overdentures with conventional dentures in diabetic patients. Materials and Methods A randomized clinical trial was conducted at Bhagalpur District, Bihar, with a sample size of 30 diabetic patients divided into two groups: Group A (n=15) received mandibular implantsupported overdentures and Group B (n=15) received conventional dentures. The study duration was 6 to 9 months. Primary outcomes measured included patient satisfaction, masticatory efficiency, and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). Secondary outcomes involved periodontal parameters and glycemic control. Results Patients in Group A showed significantly higher levels of satisfaction (mean satisfaction score: 8.5 vs. 6.2, p<0.05) and masticatory efficiency (mean chewing performance score: 7.8 vs. 5.9, p<0.05) compared to Group B. OHRQoL scores also improved markedly in Group A (mean score: 85 vs. 70, p<0.05). Periodontal health was better in Group A, with lower plaque index and gingival bleeding scores. Additionally, glycemic control improved in both groups, but more significantly in Group A (mean HbA1c reduction: 1.2% vs. 0.7%, p<0.05). Conclusion Mandibular implant-supported overdentures significantly enhance patient satisfaction, masticatory efficiency, and OHRQoL in diabetic patients compared to conventional dentures. These findings suggest that implant-supported overdentures are a more effective prosthetic solution for diabetic patients, potentially also contributing to better periodontal health and glycemic control. This study aimed to compare implant stabilities between the immediate and early loaded, immediately placed bone‐level tapered dental implants in the maxilla and to evaluate marginal bone loss (MBL), oral health‐related quality of life (OHRQoL), and patient satisfaction at a 2‐year follow‐up. A pilot, prospective, randomized, controlled clinical trial was conducted on 24 maxillary failing dentition patients. The bone‐level tapered implants of 12 patients were immediately loaded with temporary restorations, while the other 12 patients did not receive any kind of temporization. Implant‐supported screw‐retained complete porcelain‐fused‐to‐metal prostheses were delivered to all patients in the seventh postoperative week. The insertion torque values of implants assigned to the immediate and early loading groups were 33.0 ± 4.87 and 29.26 ± 8.31 Ncm, respectively. The dynamics of implant stability changes from implant placement up to a 2‐year follow‐up were similar for both groups (Penguin®, p = 0.268; Ostell®, p = 0.552), while the MBL was at submillimeter level. The cumulative implant survival rate was 91.80% for immediately loaded implants and 97.22% for early loaded implants, without significant difference (p = 0.162). The total score on the Oral Health Impact Profile questionnaire significantly decreased over time in both groups, indicating improvement in OHRQoL (p < 0.001), and the high level of patient satisfaction remained after 2 years of function regardless of a loading protocol. Both loading protocols, immediate and early, of six immediately placed bone‐level tapered dental implants are an adequate treatment choice for fixed rehabilitation of the maxillary failing dentition. Background: The aim of this study was to compare oral health‐related quality of life (OHRQoL) among adolescents granted (G) versus not granted (NG) publicly funded orthodontic treatment. Materials and Methods: Adolescents aged 15–20 years who were granted versus not granted publicly funded orthodontic treatment responded to a web‐based survey, assessing OHRQoL in relation to functional impact, psychological impact, and motivators for orthodontic treatment. Before the survey, pretesting of the questionnaire was conducted to ensure its reliability. Differences between the groups were tested using the chi‐squared and Mann–Whitney U‐tests. Reliability was assessed using Cohen's κ and Pearson's correlation coefficient during the pretest phase. Results: One hundred and forty patients, equally distributed between a G and an NG group, responded to the survey. Gender, age, and demographic distribution were comparable in both groups. All respondents expressed a high subjective treatment need and similar answers regarding functional aspects. Orthodontic treatment motivators (G: 86.2% and NG: 94.7%, p = 0.443) were primarily related to improved self‐esteem, overall well‐being, facial appearance, and being able to laugh without embarrassment. The NG group expressed a more negative OHRQoL impact due to the appearance of their teeth compared with the G group (p < 0.001) and a negative impact caused by the position of their teeth (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Orthodontic treatment need indices should aim to reinforce subjective measures as adolescents express similar motivators for orthodontic treatment, regardless of the clinician's objectively based decision about treatment need. The objective of this prospective 12-month observational study is to examine the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) among Hong Kong young children aged 3–4 years old receiving silver diamine fluoride (SDF) therapy for carious upper anterior primary teeth. A parental questionnaire was used to collect each child's sociodemographic background and oral health habits at baseline. Data on parents' satisfaction with their child's dental aesthetics were collected at baseline and during a 12-month visit. The Chinese Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (C-ECOHIS) was used to measure OHRQoL. A trained dentist performed examinations and recorded caries experience (dmft) and oral hygiene (visible plaque index) at baseline and 12 months. SDF was applied to the carious lesions. Out of 286 invited children, 248 (87%, 248/286) participated, and 211 (85%, 211/248) attended the 12-month examination. All SDF-treated carious lesions were discoloured at the 12-month examination. Regression analysis showed that the baseline C-ECOHIS score was associated with dmft (p < 0.001). The baseline and 12-month C-ECOHIS scores were 4.6 ± 5.5 and 5.0 ± 5.6, respectively (p = 0.42). The scores for parental satisfaction with dental aesthetics at baseline and 12 months were 59% to 46% (p < 0.001). Satisfaction was negatively associated with the number of discoloured upper anterior teeth (p < 0.001). In conclusion, SDF discoloured the carious upper anterior teeth of the Hong Kong kindergarten children. However, the discoloured lesions had no significant effects on the OHRQoL of these children. However, more parents became dissatisfied with their child's dental aesthetics after SDF therapy. Hence, clinicians should inform parents well before they perform SDF therapy on children. Background/Objectives: Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a rare genetic disease that is responsible for bone fragility, but also for dental malocclusions and dentinogenesis imperfecta (DI). The aim of this study was to assess whether the severity of dental malocclusion influenced the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) and exposure to bullying in a paediatric OI population compared with a control group. Methods: Dental and occlusal characteristics were noted during oral and radiographic examination. The severity of malocclusion was assessed using the PAR index. P-CPQ, COHIP(34), and BCS-A questionnaires were used to evaluate, respectively, externally and self-perceived OHRQoL and bullying. Results: We included 39 patients with a mean age of 11.3 (±4.8 SD) in the OI group, and 45 patients with a mean age of 12.3 (±3.2 SD) in the control group. There were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of occlusal vertical and transverse dimensions. Patients with severe OI, presenting with bone fractures, bones deformities, and short stature, had significantly more anterior (p < 0.05) and posterior openbites (p < 0.05) and more DI (p < 0.05) compared to patients who had moderate or mild OI. Self-perceived OHRQoL was negatively impacted by the disease (p = 0.01), particularly in the domains of oral health (p < 0.05) and self-image (p < 0.001), but not by its severity. Exposure to bullying did not differ significantly between the two groups, although more patients with OI reported being teased (21.4% face to face and 7.1% online vs. 14.6% and 2.4% in the control group). Background: The aim of this study was to clarify the link between oral health-related quality of life (independent variable) and loneliness (outcome) among the general adult population (also stratified by sex). Methods: Data were taken from a quota-based survey of the German general adult population (representative in terms of state, sex and age group), with n = 5,000 individuals (mean age was 46.9 years, SD: 15.3 years, ranging from 18 to 74 years). Oral health-related quality of life was quantified using the OHIP-G5. Loneliness was quantified using the De Jong Gierveld tool. Multiple linear regressions were conducted. Results: After adjusting for several covariates, multiple linear regressions revealed that poor oral health-related quality of life is associated with higher loneliness levels in the total sample (β = 0.12, p < 0.001). Such associations were also found in both sexes (men: β = 0.12, p < 0.001, women: β = 0.12, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Study findings showed an association between oral health-related quality of life and loneliness. Background Objectives Methods Results Conclusion Poor oral conditions in the elderly may have numerous effects on general health, including physical fitness and performance.This study aimed to determine the relationship between oral health and physical function in elderly people.Physical function and oral health parameters were compared using parametric comparison tests and Pearson correlation analyses. In addition, principal components analysis, hierarchical clustering and multidimensional scaling analysis clustered the patients' physical and oral health scores. The relationship between the groups was also determined using decision tree analysis.A total of 112 elderly patients participated in the study. Grip strength (GS) was higher in patients with high chewing ability, and Timed Up and Go (TUG) scores were lower in the high oral health group (p < .05). GS was correlated with Decay, Missing, and Filled Teeth Index (DMFT) and the number of remaining and functional teeth (p < .05). According to principal component analysis, it was seen that there were three components (oral, functional and quality of life (QoL) parameters), and the features that were related to each other were gathered together. TUG and GS showed the highest relative importance among physical function criteria in the classification based on chewing ability. They were GS and physical activity for oral health‐related QoL.In the elderly, higher physical function parameters, especially GS may be an indicator of a better oral health and oral health‐related QoL. Implant-supported fixed partial dentures (IFPDs) are a treatment option for partially edentulous dentition with missing posterior-most molars despite the concept of a shortened dental arch (SDA). This study aimed to evaluate the effect of IFPD treatment on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in patients with unilateral SDA missing two adjacent molars and to compare the effects of single- and two-unit IFPDs. Forty patients with unilateral SDA missing two adjacent molars (Kennedy Class II) participated in this study; 11 patients received one implant placement in the first molar and were treated with a single-unit IFPD (single-unit group), and 29 received two implant placements and were treated with a two-unit IFPD (two-unit group). The Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP) questionnaire for OHRQoL assessment and the gummy jelly test for objective masticatory performance were administered before and after IFPD treatment. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test for all patients and Mann–Whitney U test were performed for pre- and post-treatment comparisons and between-group comparisons, respectively. The OHIP summary score and gummy jelly glucose concentration in all patients showed significant improvements after treatment (all P < 0.05). No significant differences were observed between the single- and two-unit groups for any of the items. Using the minimal important difference in the OHIP summary score, 63.6 % and 58.6 % of patients in the single- and two-unit groups, respectively, showed improvement by 6 points or more. In cases of missing posterior teeth, treatment modalities based on the shortened dental arch (SDA) concept may be a viable alternative. However, the association between oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) and patients' treatment decisions remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the association between OHRQoL and the decision to be treated with implant-supported fixed partial dentures (IFPDs) or take a wait-and-see approach in patients with an SDA missing a single second molar and to clarify the impact of IFPD treatment on the OHRQoL. The Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP) questionnaire was administered twice (pre- and post-treatment) and once to 41 patients with a unilateral SDA missing a single second molar who chose IFPD treatment (IFPD group, n = 22) and the wait-and-see approach (no treatment group, n = 19), respectively. Logistic regression analysis was performed with IFPD treatment choice as the objective variable and the four OHIP dimension scores, age, and sex as covariates. The pre- and post-treatment values of the OHIP summary and four-dimension scores were compared using a paired t -test. The IFPD treatment choice was significantly associated with sex (male), higher Oral Function dimension scores, and lower Psychosocial Impact dimension scores (all P < 0.05). The OHIP summary and four-dimension scores were significantly lower following IFPD treatment (all P < 0.05). IFPD treatment for a single missing second molar may be clinically beneficial for improving the OHRQoL of patients with an SDA who experience a decline in masticatory function. Background: Caries Impacts and Experiences Questionnaire for Children (CARIES‐QC) has been developed to assess the oral health‐related quality of life (OHRQoL) associated with caries. Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the validity and reliability of the CARIES‐QC in the Turkish‐speaking population following its translation and adaptation into Turkish (CARIES‐QC/T). Design: Two hundred and fifty children between the ages of 5 and 16 years who have active dental caries were included in the study and answered the Turkish‐translated and cross‐culturally adapted final version of CARIES‐QC/T. Test–retest reliability and internal consistency were used to examine the reliability of the CARIES‐QC/T. Factor structure of CARIES‐QC/T was analyzed using exploratory factor analysis (EFA), and convergent validity was determined. Results: Cronbach's alpha and McDonald's ômega values were 0.907 and 0.908, respectively. For the CARIES‐QC/T scale, the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) value was 0.933, and polychoric correlations ranged from 0.390 to 0.794. The convergent validity of the items revealed a statistically significant correlation with the global question (rs = 0.821, p <.001). The EFA results of CARIES‐QC/T suggested a one‐factor solution and explained 59.7% of the total variance. Conclusion: The findings provided supporting evidence that the CARIES‐QC/T could be used as a tool for measuring OHRQoL in healthy Turkish‐speaking children aged 5–16 years with active caries. This study aimed to investigate the association between OHRQoL and the decision to be treated with implant-supported fixed partial dentures (IFPDs) or take a wait-and-see approach in patients with an SDA missing a single second molar and to clarify the impact of IFPD treatment on the OHRQoL. Background/purpose: Implant-supported fixed partial dentures (IFPDs) are a treatment option for partially edentulous dentition with missing posterior-most molars despite the concept of a shortened dental arch (SDA). This study aimed to evaluate the effect of IFPD treatment on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in patients with unilateral SDA missing two adjacent molars and to compare the effects of single- and two-unit IFPDs. Materials and methods: Forty patients with unilateral SDA missing two adjacent molars (Kennedy Class II) participated in this study; 11 patients received one implant placement in the first molar and were treated with a single-unit IFPD (single-unit group), and 29 received two implant placements and were treated with a two-unit IFPD (two-unit group). The Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP) questionnaire for OHRQoL assessment and the gummy jelly test for objective masticatory performance were administered before and after IFPD treatment. Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) is a non-invasive approach used for microbial decontamination, and it can also be beneficial as an adjunctive strategy for oral infections. The success of treatment in the long term is increasingly recognized to be influenced by patient's perception of the disease and its improvement. Recently, aPDT has been suggested as a dual approach to tissue repair, pain relief, and enhancement of oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). The first pathway involves the antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects of aPDT. It not only eliminates microorganisms but also helps regulate the immune response and reduce inflammation, leading to a faster and more effective healing process. This, in turn, provides relief from pain and associated symptoms, aiding in the management of treatment complications. The second pathway involves aPDT's ability to modulate nociception and alleviate pain. aPDT induces analgesia by releasing neurotransmitters such as β-endorphin, serotonin, and acetylcholinesterase. It also interacts with mitochondria through photoreceptors, initiating intracellular processes that alleviate pain. Furthermore, the therapy inhibits nerve fibers, reducing nerve impulse conduction and altering the pain threshold. Considering that the impact on patients' pain and OHRQoL is an important aspect of the decision-making process, this study aimed to review patient-based outcome measures during aPDT and assess its effects on pain and OHRQoL in patients. Understanding these factors will contribute to a better assessment of the overall benefits and effectiveness of aPDT as a treatment option for oral infections.

Purpose: To assess the self-reported oral health and oral health-related quality of life of patients diagnosed with hemato-oncological disease. Patients and methods: Data was collected through a digital questionnaire in collaboration with the Dutch patient organization Hematon. The questionnaires EORTC-QLQ-C30, EORTC-QLQ-OH15, shortened Xerostomia Inventory (XI), and the OHIP-14 were used. Results: Seven hundred five patients were included (52.5% female, mean age 63.2 ± 10.1). The majority was diagnosed more than 2 years ago (86%) and had received treatment (81%) for their disease. Lymphoma, leukemia, and multiple myeloma were the most frequent malignancies. Chemotherapy alone, chemotherapy in combination with targeted therapy or immunotherapy, and myeloablative chemotherapy followed by autologous stem cell transplantation were the most common treatment modalities. The XI identified that 40.5% met the criteria for xerostomia. Other complaints included mouth soreness and sensitivity, gingival pain and bleeding, problems with teeth or with an ill-fitting denture. Despite reporting oral complaints, most patients experienced a rather good OH-QoL. A high xerostomia score led to a significantly lower OH-QoL. Female gender, history of stem cell transplantation, radiation to head and neck, and multiple daily medication use were significant predictors of xerostomia. Conclusion: Patients with hematologic malignancies frequently reported a dry mouth and other oral complaints including mouth soreness and sensitivity, gingival pain and bleeding, and problems with teeth. Despite these oral complaints, most patients experienced a relatively good OH-QoL. Purpose: To evaluate the relationship between self-rated oral health, subjective oral conditions, oral health behaviours, and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in Chinese college students. Materials and Methods: An online cross-sectional survey was conducted, inviting college students from eastern China to participate. A total of 1708 participants were included. A structural equation model was constructed to explain and assess the associations among self-rated oral health, subjective oral conditions, oral health behaviours, and OHRQoL. Results: Self-rated oral health had a direct positive effect on subjective oral conditions and OHRQoL. Oral health behaviours had direct negative impacts on subjective oral conditions and OHRQoL as well as on tooth condition perception and oral health interventions. Subjective oral conditions had a direct positive effect on OHRQoL. There was a positive correlation between oral health behaviours and self-rated oral health. In addition, subjective oral conditions partially mediated both the effect of oral health behaviours on OHRQoL and the effect of self-rated oral health on OHRQoL. Conclusion: There were influential associations between self-rated oral health, subjective oral conditions, oral health behaviours, and OHRQoL among college students in eastern China. Abstract Background In recent years, the demand for orthodontic treatment with aligners has increased, led by patient need, as aligners typically provide them with improved aesthetics and less physical discomfort. In deciding with the patient on an appropriate orthodontic system, it is important to take into account the potential discomfort and the perceptions that patients have in relation to their treatment. The objective of this study was to analyze the influence of brackets or aligners on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) and anxiety levels in a sample of adult patients during the first month of treatment. Methods The pilot study was carried out at the Dental Clinic of the University of Salamanca between November 2023 and February 2024. Eighty adult patients who initiated orthodontic treatment were selected and divided into two groups: the brackets group (Victory®; 3 M Unitek, California, USA) (n = 40) and the aligners group (Invisalign®; Align Technology, California, USA) (n = 40). OHRQoL was analyzed using the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14) questionnaire, and anxiety was analyzed using the State–Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). The follow-up time was one month, with scores recorded at the beginning (T0) and one month after starting treatment (T1). Results The mean patient age was 33.70 (± 5.45) years old. The total sample (n = 80) consisted of 66.2% men and 33.8% women. In the brackets group, one month after starting treatment, the dimension with the highest impact was that of physical pain (5.62 ± 1.51). In the aligners group, where the dimension of psychological disability had the highest score (4.22 ± 1.02). In the brackets group the total OHIP score was higher at one month (T1) (33.98 ± 6.81) than at the start of treatment (T0) (21.80 ± 3.34); this greater impact on OHRQoL one month after starting treatment was not observed in the aligners group (T1 = 27.33 ± 6.83; T0 = 27.33 ± 6.22). The orthodontic system used did not influence participants’ anxiety (p > 0.05). Age and sex were not influential factors in either OHRQoL or anxiety. Conclusions The bracket system significantly influenced patients’ OHRQoL. In the sample studied, no influence of the orthodontic system (brackets versus aligners) on anxiety was observed.

Participants (n = 482) completed the validated OHIP5-Ar questionnaire to assess OHRQoL. Responses were classified as “optimal” (no problems) or “less than optimal” (any reported problems). Logistic regression analyzed the relationship between OHRQoL and sociodemographic factors.Results: There were 66.8% children reported optimal OHRQoL after RCT. Logistic regression showed no significant association between optimal OHRQoL and gender, family income, or location of treated tooth. However, although not statistically significant. Treating only one FPM with RCT (compared to multiple teeth) and lower family income (compared to higher income) were more likely to have decreased or increased odds of optimal OHRQoL (AOR = 0.684 or 1.424; respectively).Conclusion: RCT on FPMs can be a successful treatment option for pediatric patients, offering optimal oral health-related quality of life.Keywords: oral health-related quality of life, root canal treatment, first permanent molars, children

Objective: We studied the association between the socioeconomic status (SES), tooth loss, and oral health–related quality of life (OHRQoL) in an adult cohort in western China. As socioeconomic inequalities in oral health are often neglected in oral health promotion. we aimed to verify the impact of SES on tooth loss and OHRQoL. Methods: In all, 348 participants aged 60 years and older were selected for this study. Relationships amongst SES, tooth loss, and OHRQoL were identified by using a structural equation model (SEM). Results: In the final sample, 312 people were included, and the response rate was 89.7%. The bias-corrected 95% confidence intervals of the total, direct, and indirect effects were (−0.267 to 0.475), (−0.489 to 0.185), and (0.088 to 0.450), respectively. The comparative fit index of SEM was 0.943. The model showed that their SES directly affected tooth loss in the elderly population. This indirectly affects their oral health–related quality of life. The numbers of natural teeth and occlusal units (with standardised path coefficients of 0.79 and 0.74, respectively) were found to be the most significant factors relating to tooth loss. Conclusion: SES affected the oral health–related quality of life in elderly people through tooth loss in a Chinese study population. Our data suggest that improvements in the social and economic environments are a primary measure that should be implmented to prevent tooth loss and improve the OHRQoL.

Background: Older people receiving home-based care (HBC) often face barriers to access preventive oral health care (OHC) and dental treatments. Leading to deterioration of their oral healthcare. It is further deteriorated by factors such as increasing burden of systemic diseases, medicinal side effects, limited mobility, financial constraints and lack of professional OHC at home. Older people also struggle to maintain necessary daily oral hygiene, leading to malnutrition, weight loss, and a risk of a further health degradation. This cross-sectional survey aimed to investigate the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) and their associated factors in HBC recipients. Methods: 5,280 older people (≥ 60 years) living in Hamburg, who were in need of care and insured with statutory health insurance DAK-Gesundheit received the questionnaire, which included the German version of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP G-14) and, the EQ-5D health-related quality of life (HRQoL) measure as well as further questions regarding the extent of informal social support, subjective oral health status, oral health behaviour, subjective cognitive status, and socio-demographic variables. Results: The participants (n = 1,622) had a median age of 83.2 years, with 72.0% of the sample being female. Nearly two thirds of the sample reported that their independence or abilities were significantly impaired (care level 2). Regarding oral health impacts, 40.0% of the participants reported experiencing at least one of the fourteen possible prevalent impacts of the OHIP-G14 fairly often or very often. A multivariate regression model on the severity of oral health impacts revealed, that a better HRQoL, a positive perception of one's own dental status, fewer visits to dental practices, and no need for support in OHC were associated with better OHRQoL. Conversely, respondents with a negative perception of their oral health status, more frequent visits to a dental practice, a need for support in OHC, and subjective memory impairment showed poorer OHRQoL. Conclusions: The results highlight the risk for poor oral health among older people in HBC. We conclude that there is an urgent need to prioritise oral health, especially as poor oral health can further compromise the systemic wellbeing of these already care dependent population. Objectives Methods Results Conclusions To assess the association between dental insurance, dental care utilization and oral health‐related impact on daily activities among patients visiting Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)‐funded health centers in the United States.This cross‐sectional study examined the 2014 Health Center Patient Survey (HCPS), a survey of patients who received care at US health centers. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to explore the likelihood of the oral health‐related impact on daily activities domains such as school/work performance, sleeping, eating/chewing, social and home activities considering sociodemographic, dental insurance, and dental care utilization.Among 7002 total participants, 6890 self‐reported oral health‐related impact on daily activities. Adults aged 18–44 were 2.6 times more likely to report an overall impact on everyday life activities compared to children and adolescents. After adjusting for sociodemographics, Hispanic patients were less likely to report any oral health‐related impacts, while patients visiting rural centres reported higher odds of oral health related impairment. Patients who experienced delays in receiving dental care or were unable to access dental care when needed were 4.5 times more likely to encounter difficulties in their daily activities.This study linked limited dental insurance and care to increased oral health issues impacting daily life, particularly among adults, rural populations, and those facing delay in dental care. This highlights the need for policy reforms and interventions aimed at improving dental care access to mitigate the detrimental effects of poor oral health on daily functions for vulnerable populations. Background/Objectives: Dental rehabilitation after extended tumour resection and jaw reconstruction is challenging. The present study aimed to report the prosthetic outcome and quality of life (QoL) in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) after microvascular alveolar ridge reconstruction. Methods: The prosthetic outcomes of all consecutive patients with HNC who underwent microvascular alveolar ridge reconstruction at the University Hospital Salzburg between 2011 and 2018 were investigated. Oral health-related QoL (OHrQoL) and overall QoL were assessed using the validated Oral Health Impact Profile-49 (OHIP-49) and Short Form-36 questionnaires. Results: During the study period, 115 consecutive patients with head and neck cancer underwent microvascular jaw reconstruction. Among them, 23.3% and 27.4% received conventional tissue-borne prostheses and implant-supported prostheses, respectively, while 48.7% did not undergo dental rehabilitation. The prosthetic outcome was not associated with tumour stage (p = 0.32). Oral health-related quality of life (OHrQoL) was best in patients with implant-supported dental rehabilitation (OHIP-49 median score = 7) and worst in those with conventional removable dentures (OHIP-49 median score = 54). The corresponding OHIP-49 median score for patients who could not undergo dental rehabilitation was 30.5. All Short Form-36 subscale scores were equal to or higher than the malignancy norm scores. Conclusions: After microvascular jaw reconstruction, approximately one-third of the HNC patients received adequate implant-supported dental rehabilitation. However, the risk of dental rehabilitation failure was 50%. The different prosthetic outcomes affected OHrQoL, but not overall QoL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: The objectives were to investigate the association between oral functional status (defined by the number of functional teeth and functional occluding units [FOUs]) on oral health‐related quality of life (OHRQoL). It also aimed to determine if dentures could compensate for the loss of FOUs in terms of OHRQoL in community‐dwelling older adults in Singapore. Methods: Community‐dwelling older adults, aged 60 years and above, were recruited from a community‐based oral health functional screening programme from 1 May 2018 to 31 December 2019. During the screening, an Oral Health Impact Profile‐14 (OHIP‐14) questionnaire and oral examination were administered. Statistical analysis was performed using the chi‐square test, univariate logistic regression and multivariate predictive modelling. Results: Data from 1037 participants were analysed (52% female; mean age 71.5 (SD 7.15)). The mean OHIP‐14 score was 4.5 ± 7.2. The OHIP‐14 scores were significantly associated with the number of functional teeth and the number of FOUs (p <.001). Having at least 20 functional teeth or 10 FOUs was associated with a significantly lower OHIP‐14 score. Those with no FOUs had higher OHIP‐14 scores compared to those with at least 10 FOUs, even in the presence of a satisfactory denture. Conclusion: Maintaining at least 20 functional teeth or 10 FOUs was associated with better OHRQoL among community‐dwelling older adults in Singapore. Objectives: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the prevalence of somatic pain in orthodontic patients and determine whether somatic pain contributes to worsening oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) through the mediating effect of psychological discomfort. Materials and methods: Scale measurements and analyses were conducted on a cohort of 769 orthodontic outpatients, encompassing Patient Health Questionnaire-15-pain (PHQ-15-P), Hua-Xi Emotional-Distress Index (HEI), Psychosocial Impact of Dental Aesthetics Questionnaire (PIDAQ), and Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14). Results: Among the respondents, 56.3% (N = 433) reported somatic pain and 20.0% (N = 154) had mental discomfort based on PHQ-15-P and HEI scores. Patients with somatic pain symptoms had significantly higher scores of HEI and OHIP-14 (P < 0.001), and higher PHQ-15-P and HEI scores emerged as statistically significant predictors of lower OHIP-14 scores (P < 0.001). HEI scores which assessed anxiety and depression partially mediated the correlation between PHQ-15-P and OHIP-14 scores, of which anxiety accounted for 52.9% of the overall mediation effect, dominating the indirect effect. Conclusion: Orthodontic patients reporting somatic pains were at a significantly higher risk of worsening OHRQoL during treatment, and this adverse effect is partially mediated by anxiety and depression. Clinical relevance: Our findings highlight the necessity for the assessment of general health and mental well-being during orthodontic interventions. To prevent delays in treating general disorders and the potential failure of orthodontic treatments, we encourage increased attentiveness towards patients with somatic symptoms and consideration of the adverse effects of comorbid mental distress. Background: The relationship between oral and overall health is of interest to health care professionals and patients alike. This study investigated the correlation between oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in a general adult population. Methods: This cross-sectional study used a convenience sample of adult participants (N = 607) attending the 2022 Minnesota County and State fairs in USA, the 5-item Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-5) assessed OHRQoL, and the 10-item PROMIS v.1.2 Global Health Instrument assessed HRQoL. Spearman and Pearson correlations were used to summarize the bivariable relationship between OHRQoL and HRQoL (both physical and mental health dimensions). A structural equation model determined OHRQoL-HRQoL correlations (r). Correlations' magnitude was interpreted according to Cohen's guidelines (r = 0.10, 0.30, and 0.50 to demarcate "small," "medium," and "large" effects, respectively). Results: OHRQoL and HRQoL correlated with r = 0.52 (95% confidence interval, CI: [0.50–0.55]), indicating that the two constructs shared 27% of their information. According to Cohen, this was a "large" effect. OHRQoL, and the physical and mental HRQoL dimensions correlated with r = 0.55 (95% CI: [0.50–0.59]) and r = 0.43 (95% CI: [0.40–0.46]), respectively, indicating a "large" and a "medium" effect. OHRQoL and HRQoL were substantially correlated in an adult population. Conclusion: Using OHIP-5 to assess their dental patients' oral health impact allows dental professionals to gain insights into patients' overall health-related wellbeing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: The Oral and Systemic Health Impact Profile for Periodontal Disease (OSHIP‐Perio) was developed to measure health‐related quality of life (HRQoL) and oral health‐related quality of life (OHRQoL). This study aimed to determine the responsiveness and minimal importance difference (MID) of the OSHIP‐Perio. Methods: Subjects with periodontal disease completed the OSHIP‐Perio at baseline and six to ten weeks after non‐surgical periodontal therapy. Comparisons of the clinical variables and the OSHIP‐Perio scores before and after treatment were analysed using the Wilcoxon signed‐rank test, together with the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP‐49, OHIP‐14 and OHIP‐5) scores. The MIDs for all the instruments were calculated using distribution‐based methods. Results: Fifty‐one case subjects who completed periodontal treatment and the OSHIP‐Perio instrument were included for analysis. Significant improvement in all clinical variables after treatment (p < 0.001) was observed. The OSHIP‐Perio total score as well as its four‐dimensional scores (periodontal, oral function, orofacial pain and psychosocial impact) were significantly reduced after treatment (p < 0.001), indicating better OHRQoL. Findings were consistent with the other OHIP instruments. In determining the MID, the percentage point change of the OSHIP‐Perio was found to be lower than the shorter OHIP‐5 instrument when using both effect sizes (ES) (10.71% vs. 15.0% at 0.5SD) and standard error of measurement (SEM) (5.36% vs. 10.0% at 1SEM; 8.93% vs. 20.0% at 2SEM) calculations. Conclusions: The OSHIP‐Perio demonstrated good responsiveness which was comparable to the OHIP‐49 and its short‐form derivatives. Objectives: This study aimed to develop and validate the Oral and Systemic Health Impact Profile for Periodontal Disease (OSHIP‐Perio), a disease‐specific instrument for assessing the impact of periodontal disease on both general and oral health‐related quality of life. Methods: A pool of 58 items, developed from the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP‐49) and data generated through semi‐structured patient interviews, was tested on 80 case subjects with periodontal disease and 80 control subjects. The dimensionality of the preliminary measure was evaluated using exploratory factor analysis (EFA). Rasch analysis was then performed on the primary dimension using the Winsteps software (Version 5.1.4.0) to render the final items for the OSHIP‐Perio. The reliability and validity of the final OSHIP‐Perio were subsequently determined. Results: Using an EFA factor loading >0.50, the primary dimension comprised 18 items. Using Rasch analysis, four items were subsequently excluded. The final OSHIP‐Perio with 14 items showed excellent test–retest reliability (overall intraclass correlation coefficient index = 0.99) and internal consistency (overall Cronbach's alpha coefficient = 0.96). It also exhibited good discriminant validity when case and control groups were compared (p < 0.001). It showed very strong correlations (rho coefficients >0.90) with the OHIP‐5, OHIP‐14 and OHIP‐49, exhibiting good concurrent validity. It demonstrated a moderate correlation (rho coefficient = 0.60) with the global health rating, exhibiting a moderate convergent validity. Conclusions: The 14‐item OSHIP‐Perio exhibited good psychometric properties comparable to the OHIP‐5, OHIP‐14 and OHIP‐49 for evaluating the impact of periodontal disease on quality of life. Objective: Accurate assessment of child oral health is important for guiding economic evaluations and informing healthcare decision‐making. Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (ECOHIS‐4D) is a preference‐based instrument that measures the oral health‐related quality of life of young children. The aim of this study was to compare the utility scores of ECOHIS‐4D and Child Health Utility Index (CHU‐9D), against an oral health indicator to evaluate which utility score corresponds better with the oral health indicator. Method: The ECOHIS‐4D and CHU‐9D were applied to 314 parent/child dyads from preschools in a primary healthcare setting in Perth, Western Australia. Four parameters were used to assess which instrument corresponds better with the oral health indicator (decayed, missing and filled teeth score‐dmft score): (i) discrimination, the ability to discriminate between different clinical severity groups, (ii) external responsiveness, how much the utility values relate to the changes in dmft scores, (iii) correlation, the association between the two instruments and the related dimensions and (iv) differences in the utility values across the two instruments. Results: Most participants (81%) were 2–6 years old, and nearly 50% had a dmft score <3. ECOHIS‐4D demonstrated a superior ability to differentiate between dmft severity groups and respond to changes in dmft scores. A significant weak correlation was observed between dmft and ECOHIS‐4D (−0.26, 95%, CI −0.36 to −0.15) compared to a non‐significant very poor correlation between dmft and CHU‐9D (0.01, 95% CI −0.12 to 0.10). The utility scores of the two instruments had relatively good agreement towards good health and weak agreement towards poor health. Conclusions: ECOHIS‐4D, the oral health‐specific instrument, is more sensitive in assessing children's oral health‐related quality of life than the generic CHU‐9D. Thus, ECOHIS‐4D is more appropriate for utility estimates in economic evaluations of oral health‐related interventions and resource allocation decision‐making. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: The primary aim of this study was to evaluate if children's oral health and oral health‐related quality of life (OHRQoL) were associated with school performance. Moreover, the study aimed to examine whether school environment factors influenced this association. Methods: This cross‐sectional study was based on a population‐based sample of 998 12‐year‐old schoolchildren from 31 public schools in Quito, Ecuador. Trained and calibrated examiners conducted clinical exams for dental caries, dental trauma and malocclusion. Furthermore, children completed the Spanish version of the Child Perception Questionnaire (CPQ11‐14), and their parents answered questions about socio‐economic status. School coordinators provided information on the physical environment, promotion of health practices and the occurrence of negative episodes in the school. There were three outcomes: grades obtained in Spanish language and mathematics and the number of missed school days. Multilevel linear and Poisson regression models were conducted using a hierarchical approach to include the variables guided by a previously created direct acyclic graph. Results: Children with dental trauma and higher CPQ11‐14 scores showed lower grades and school attendance. Schoolchildren from schools with episodes of vandalism had more school days missed. Conclusion: The school performance of 12‐year‐old children is affected by dental trauma and by a worse OHRQoL, as well as a negative school environment. ABSTRACT Background The aim of this study was to compare oral health‐related quality of life (OHRQoL) among adolescents granted (G) versus not granted (NG) publicly funded orthodontic treatment. Materials and Methods Adolescents aged 15–20 years who were granted versus not granted publicly funded orthodontic treatment responded to a web‐based survey, assessing OHRQoL in relation to functional impact, psychological impact, and motivators for orthodontic treatment. Before the survey, pretesting of the questionnaire was conducted to ensure its reliability. Differences between the groups were tested using the chi‐squared and Mann–Whitney U‐tests. Reliability was assessed using Cohen's κ and Pearson's correlation coefficient during the pretest phase. Results One hundred and forty patients, equally distributed between a G and an NG group, responded to the survey. Gender, age, and demographic distribution were comparable in both groups. All respondents expressed a high subjective treatment need and similar answers regarding functional aspects. Orthodontic treatment motivators (G: 86.2% and NG: 94.7%, p = 0.443) were primarily related to improved self‐esteem, overall well‐being, facial appearance, and being able to laugh without embarrassment. Background. The objectives were to assess the impact of dental caries on the daily living of the geriatric population and determine the factors that influence the relationship between dental health and the daily living of the geriatric population. Methods. A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out over six months at Rawalpindi’s public and private dental hospitals. Participants aged≥60 years, both male and female, were selected. The calculated sample size was 281. Desired sample from one of the dental hospitals was collected using a non-probability consecutive sampling strategy. Data about sociodemographic characteristics and the DMFT index were collected. Adapted validated tool dental impact on daily living (DIDL) was used to assess the impact of dental health on daily living. Results. Chi-squared test of association showed a positive association between the DIDL and sociodemographic variables, including age (P=0.001), gender (P=0.001), education (P=0.001), income (P=0.001), occupation (P=0.029), marital status (P=0.001), living arrangement (P=0.001), and history of chronic illnesses (P=0.001). The association between the DMFT index and DIDL also showed statistically significant results (P=0.001). Binary logistic regression analysis indicated that gender (OR=6.98, P=0.005) and the individual’s dental health (OR=6.43, P=0.001) were the strongest predictors of the impact experienced in daily life activities. The overall model was statistically significant (χ2=51.24, P=0.001), and the variables were responsible for 32.4% of the variance in the outcome variable. Conclusion. The study provides strong evidence that sociodemographic factors, DMFT index, gender, and individual dental health significantly contribute to the impact of dental health on daily living. Gender and individual dental health emerge as particularly influential predictors. These findings emphasize the need for targeted interventions and awareness programs, especially for groups with a higher risk of experiencing a significant impact on daily life due to dental issues.

Oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) is a multidimensional concept of biopsychosocial aspects related to oral health. OHRQol contains information for patient-centered treatment plan development. The OHRQoL measurement instrument widely used by clinicians is the oral health impact profile-14 (OHIP-14). This case report aimed to evaluate OHRQoL in HAEM patient, which only manifests on the lips and oral cavity.Case: A 25-year-old male patient came to the Department of Oral Medicine with the chief complaint of painful canker sores on the lips. Extra-oral examination revealed serosanguineous crusts on the lips that were painful and easily bleed. Intra-oral examination showed diffused and painful irregular erythematous lesions on the upper and lower labial mucosa. The anti-HSV1 IgG test was positive. The patient was diagnosed with HAEM.Case Management: Pharmacological therapy included triamcinolone acetonide 0.1% in orabase, acyclovir tablets, multivitamins, and 0.9% NaCl. Non-pharmacological therapy included advice on maintaining good oral hygiene, avoiding spicy and sour foods, and breaking the bad habit of licking the lips.Conclusion: The patient’s physical, psychological, and social conditions showed improvement and returned to normal after 7 days of treatment. This study aimed to evaluate the association between oral mucosal lesions and OHRQoL as measured by the validated Indonesian version of the oral health impact profile-14 questionnaire (OHIP-14) among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA).Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at the Central Referral Hospital in West Java, Indonesia. The validity of OHIP-14 was evaluated in 30 PLWHA using inter-item corrected correlation, while reliability was assessed through Cronbach’s alpha and kappa coefficient agreement. Subsequently, a consecutive sample of 110 PLWHA self-completed the validated Indonesian version of OHIP-14 and underwent an oral examination. The association between oral mucosal lesions and OHRQoL was analyzed using the chi-squared test.Results: The validity test of the OHIP-14 questionnaire produced a rcount > 0.189, meaning that all question items were valid and could be used to describe OHRQoL. The reliability test of the OHIP-14 questionnaire produced a Cronbach’s alpha value of 0.960 (> 0.7), which means that overall, the OHIP-14 questionnaire is reliable and feasible to be used to assess OHRQoL. Among the 110 enrolled participants, 61.8% were female and 38.2% were male, with the mean age 23.5 years old, the majority of them (59.1%) had been taking antiretrovirals (ARV), and (81.5%) had good QoL. There was a statistically significant relationship between oral lesions and quality of life (p< 0.05), particularly acute pseudomembranous candidiasis, angular cheilitis, recurrent intraoral herpes, and Stevens-Johnson syndrome.Conclusion: This study indicated a significant association between oral mucosal lesions and OHRQoL in PLWHA. Abstract Background This study aimed to examine the impact of dental caries and other potential socio-demographic factors on the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of preschool children from Myanmar. This was done using the Scale of Oral Health Outcomes for 5-year-old children (SOHO-5) as reported by both the children and their parents. Methods A structured questionnaire was conducted to collect demographic information about the children and their caregivers, as well as socioeconomic data. The OHRQoL was assessed by interviewing the children and their parents using the Myanmar versions of SOHO-5c and SOHO-5p, respectively. Caries experience was assessed by two calibrated examiners and recorded using the dmft index. The Poisson regression model was adopted to investigate the association between OHRQoL and dental caries including socioeconomic factors. Results A total of 454 pairs participated in the study. Among them, 64% of children and 70% of parents reported a negative impact on OHRQoL (with SOHO-5c and SOHO-5p scores exceeding 0). The mean score (SD) of the child self-report and parental version of the SOHO-5 was 1.86 (2.27) and 2.65 (3.13), respectively. Difficulties in eating and sleeping were the most commonly reported by both children and parents. The overall prevalence of dental caries was 87% (mean dmft score:5.59, SD:4.65). The final multivariate-adjusted model revealed that children with higher caries experiences were more likely to have lower OHRQoL for both child self-report (RR 4.38, 95% CI 3.16–6.14, p

Background: The study aimed to investigate oral health status and its relationship with oral health-related quality of life in the elderly in Isfahan, Iran, in 2022. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in Isfahan, with 460 elderly participants. During interviews with the participants, their demographic information, their medical and dental history, oral health-related behaviors, self-perceived oral health, and clinical examinations were collected, and the Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI) was completed. The final conclusions were made using the Generalized Linear Model (GLM) test. Results: The mean (sd) scores were 45.05 (8.62) for GOHAI, 5.44 (2.96) for self-perceived oral health, and 18.11 (5.76) for DMFT (Decayed, Missing and Filled teeth). Moreover, the number of remaining teeth on average was 11.78 (11.89), 39.56% of the participants did not brush their teeth, 40% of the elderly had complete dentures, and 27.17% had dental insurance. After adjusting and modifying the variables, the GLM test revealed that strong predictors for higher GOHAI scores were the higher levels of education (p < .001), the higher frequency of remaining teeth (p = 0.002), more pleasant self-perceived oral health (p < .001), and dental insurance (p = 0.04). Conclusions: According to the findings, the elderly's oral health-related quality of life in Isfahan was low, which was caused by the following factors: edentulism, few numbers of remaining teeth, high DMFT score, elderly' non-adjustment with dentures and their low quality, inappropriate oral health-related behaviors, lack of complementary insurance for dentistry, and non-using dental services, and low levels of education.

Abstract Background Assessing health-related quality of life has become integral to people living with HIV (PLHIV) follow-up. However, there is a lack of data regarding the impact of oral health on quality of life, known as Oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) among PLHIV compared to HIV-negative individuals in Rwanda. Aim The study aimed to assess OHRQoL among PLHIV compared to HIV-negative counterparts in Kigali, Rwanda. Methods The Oral Health Impact Profile short version (OHIP-14) questionnaire was interviewer-administered to 200 PLHIV and 200 HIV-negative adults (≥ 18 years old) at an HIV clinic of Kigali Teaching Hospital (CHUK). Socio-demographic characteristics, including age, sex, occupation, and socioeconomic status (SES) of participants, were collected using a survey questionnaire. A 4-point Likert scale was used to assess the frequency of oral impacts for all 14 items within 7 domains of the OHIP tool. The descriptive statistics were used to see frequencies and percentages of OHRQoL among PLHIV and HIV-negative persons, respectively. The Chi-square test was used to determine the association of OHRQoL with caries (DMFT) and periodontal disease (CPITN) among PLHIV compared to HIV-negative individuals. Results The results revealed a higher prevalence of PLHIV with poor OHRQoL than HIV-negative individuals in 5 domains and almost all items of OHIP-14 except for the OHIP 3 (found it uncomfortable to eat any foods because of problems with teeth or mouth) and OHIP-14 (being totally unable to function because of problems with teeth or mouth). The findings showed statistically significant results (p ≤ 0.05) for the OHIP1 item “trouble pronouncing any word,” with a prevalence of 2.5% (n = 11) and 2.25% (n = 9) in PLHIV and HIV-negative, respectively. Also, PLHIV had a significantly higher prevalence, 2.75% (n = 11) for the OHIP 13 item “life not satisfying due to teeth and mouth problems compared to HIV-negative individuals 2% (8) p ≤ 0.05. Moreover, dental caries was significantly associated with poor OHRQoL among PLHIV and HIV-negative adults and for all 14 items of the OHIP tool. Periodontal disease was not significantly associated with OHRQoL among PLHIV and HIV-negative adults. Conclusion This study revealed poor OHRQoL among PLHIV compared to HIV-negative adults. There is a need for further longitudinal studies to investigate the OHRQoL in Rwanda, especially among PLHIV. It is essential to include oral health care as one of the components of the medical health care programs for PLHIV in Rwanda.

Abstract Background Older adults present a variety of oral diseases and conditions, in addition to co-morbidities and limited access to dental care, which significantly impact their oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). There are many instruments published to measure OHRQoL. However, it is challenging for clinicians and researchers to choose the best instrument for a given purpose. Purpose To identify OHRQoL instruments available for older adults and summarize the evidence on the conceptual and measurement model, psychometric properties, interpretability, and administration issues of OHRQoL instruments available for older adults through a systematic review. Methods A systematic search was conducted in MEDLINE, EMBASE, LILACS, and CENTRAL up to February 2023. Articles reporting information on the concept model measurement, psychometric properties, and administration issues of an instrument measuring OHRQoL in older adults were included. Two researchers independently evaluated each instrument using the Evaluating Measures of Patient-Reported Outcomes (EMPRO) tool. The overall score and seven attribute-specific scores were calculated (range 0–100): Conceptual and measurement model, Reliability, Validity, Responsiveness, Interpretability, Burden, and Alternative forms. Results We identified 14 instruments evaluated in 97 articles. The overall score varied between 73.7 and 8.9, with only six questionnaires over the threshold score 50.0. EORTC QLQ OH-15 (cancer-specific questionnaire) achieved the highest score (73.7), followed by OHIP (generic OHRQoL questionnaire) (66.9), GOHAI (generic OHRQoL questionnaire) (65.5), and OHIDL (generic OHRQoL questionnaire) (65.2). Overall, the Conceptual and measurement model and Validity showed the best performance, while Responsiveness and Interpretability showed the worst. Insufficient information was presented for an overall evaluation of DSQ and OHAI. Conclusion The evidence supports using EORTC QLQ-OH15 as a specific instrument to assess OHRQoL in cancer patients and the OHIP-49, GOHAI, or OHIDL as generic instruments to assess OHRQoL either for cross-sectional or longitudinal studies in older adults.

Objective To investigate the clinical efficacy and effects of periodontal endoscope (PE)-assisted subgingival scaling and root planning (SRP) and traditional SRP on the psychological and quality of life of patients with periodontitis. Methods This study was reviewed and approved by the Ethics Committee, and informed consent was obtained from the patients. Patients with periodontitis who were treated in the Department of Periodontology, Nanjing Stomatological Hospital, Medical School of Nanjing University from April 2018 to December 2022 with residual periodontal pockets (PD ≥ 5 mm) 6 weeks after traditional SRP treatment were enrolled, and the residual periodontal pockets were further treated with PE-assisted SRP (PE+SRP). After 6 weeks of traditional SRP treatment and 3 months of PE+SRP treatment, clinical indicators, including plaque index (PLI), probing depth (PD), clinical attachment loss (CAL) and bleeding on probing (BOP), were measured, and periodontal tissue self-awareness scale scores, oral health impact profile-14 (OHIP-14) score and dental fear scale (DFS) score were collected. (1) Background: The present scoping review aims to scrutinize all existing patient-reported outcomes and assess the perspectives of obstructive sleep apnea patients after maxillomandibular surgery. (2) Methods: The review was carried out according to the extensions for scoping reviews using the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Several databases were used to carry out the initial search. This study included randomized controlled trials, cohort studies, cross-sectional and case-control studies. The included studies considered patients with obstructive sleep apnea who were submitted to orthognathic surgery as the main subjects, and the patient's perception of quality of life, satisfaction, treatment experience and side effects were assessed. (3) Results: From 1407 examined articles, a total of 16 were included. Most of the included studies used more than one questionnaire to assess quality of life, except for five articles. The most commonly referred instruments were the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, SF-36, the Functional Outcomes of Sleep and Ottawa Sleep Apnea. The most commonly assessed outcomes were sleep quality, daytime function, facial aesthetics, dental function and emotional health. (4) Conclusions: The number of variables that can be evaluated from a patient's perspective are endless, as are the tools available to assess them. Not all of these tools, which are generally questionnaires, assess all the various outcomes, and some do not compare the pre- and post-surgical situations.
