The epistemic cultures approach exposes the different ways knowledge production channels are built up among the various fields of study. In revealing these differences, the fragmentation of science can be clearly seen. Digital humanities is one such field. It is an inter- and transdisciplinary field, composed of diverse epistemic cultures and marked by distinct knowledge production practices. In the current landscape of scholarly communication, namely the open science paradigm, open practices have been at the forefront of conversation and research. The discourse’s true focus, however, is more along the lines of the epistemic cultures of the hard sciences, meaning that it does not fully consider other domains of knowledge. Thus, through a literature review, this study aims to frame the digital humanities’ epistemic cultures in the discourse of open science. The conclusion is, a conversation needs to be had specifically about the openness of knowledge, also considering other epistemic cultures’ diversity of scholarly communication practices. This would include the humanities. While simultaneously opening up this discourse, it is considered that digital humanities can also contribute to its consolidation.

Abstract

The approach to epistemic cultures exposes the differences in the construction of the processes of production and creation of knowledge between the different academic fields, which, in turn, implies the fragmentation of knowledge. The digital humanities are an inter and transdisciplinary field composed of different epistemic cultures marked by different knowledge production practices that differ from each other. In the current scenario of academic communication, the discourse around open practices in the course of research has increasingly taken a prominent place. However, this discourse, under the open science paradigm, proves to be more framed in the context of the epistemic cultures of science, and does not fully consider other domains of knowledge. This study aims to frame the epistemic cultures of the digital humanities in the discourse of openness of knowledge, through a literature review about digital humanities and open science. Its conclusion points to the need to adopt a specific discourse around the openness of knowledge, which considers the diversity of academic communication practices, including those that are specific to the humanities, as well as to the fact that the digital humanities can contribute to the consolidation of this discourse. Abstract

In the North American academic library and information studies literature, not much has been written about open access (OA) in Estonia. The present article addresses that lacunae by focusing on the country's open access landscape, spotlighting essential OA resources in the Humanities and Social Sciences. UNESCO's Global Open Access portal provides cursory information on Estonian OA and notes, "No national OA policy; no financial support for OA publishing; lack of awareness on OA/digital preservation among researchers and academics."1 This article examines the current state of open access in Estonia and argues that, despite the perceived lack of national OA policy in Estonia, OA remains a robust complementary alternative to proprietary databases. "Das von der AG Film und Video organisierte Panel setzt sich inspiriert vom Tagungsmotto "Open Humanities, Open Culture"" mit Fragen der Offenheit in der Filmwissenschaft auseinander. In den letzten Jahren wurden verschiedene Aspekte der Open Humanities im Kontext der Filmwissenschaft umrissen, allerdings nur in Einzelbetrachtungen, Das Panel möchte diese Einzelbeobachtungen zusammenführen und gemeinsam mit weiteren Fragestellungen diskutieren. Dabei erweist sich die Frage nach Offenheit für die Filmwissenschaft als besonders virulent; dies betrifft sowohl die Wiederverwertbarkeit von Software als auch die Schwierigkeit, Forschungsdaten wirklich zugänglich zu machen – dem stehen Urheberrecht, Speicherplatzbedarf und fehlende Standards gegenüber. Das Panel nimmt verschiedene Herausforderungen in den Blick: technische Infrastruktur und Standardisierungsbestrebungen, Lehre, Forschungsdatenmanagement und Citizen Humanities. Wir sind überzeugt davon, dass die Filmwissenschaft durch das Angehen ihrer spezifischen Probleme wesentliche Impulse auch für andere Geisteswissenschaften setzen und die Open Humanities entsprechend weiterentwickeln kann." Abstract

Bei der digitalen Bereitstellung von Quellen über Digitalisierungs-, Erschließungs- und Editionsprojekte klafft häufig eine Lücke zwischen Anspruch an die inhaltliche, technische und nachhaltige Umsetzung und die tatsächlich zur Verfügung stehenden finanziellen und personellen Mittel und Möglichkeiten. Wie gelingt es solchen Projekten, das selbstgesteckte Ziel des "Öffnens von Quellen" zu erreichen? Das Panel diskutiert anhand von internationalen Fallbeispielen aus der Max Weber Stiftung die Realität einer modularen Bereitstellungs- und Editionspraxis. Diese erfolgt wohl wissend um Standards, Richtlinien und Best practices und auch keineswegs komplett an diesen vorbei, aber dennoch mit notwendigen Beschränkungen und unter Entwicklung eigener Strategien und Schritt für Schritt auf dem Weg zu einer "Volledition". Angestrebt ist ein gemeinsames Nachdenken über diese sehr weit verbreitete Realität, die kleinere Institutionen genauso betrifft wie Einzelforschende, über Herausforderungen, Sackgassen und mögliche (gemeinsame) Lösungswege. Slides presented at the DARIAH-CZ national workshop on the 21st of October (https://lindat.cz/events/workshop2021) Having a vision and a strong commitment to open research has always been important to DARIAH as it brings on collaborative and innovative means of digitally enabled research. As Open Science practices are becoming a central condition of research funding, it is even more important to establish a dedicated discourse and community practices around the open research culture as it makes sense in the arts and humanities disciplines. The presentation aims to outline discipline-specific, yet widely interoperable models of Open Science emerging from community practices of arts and humanities. It will be shown how DARIAH-EU builds an open agenda for arts and humanities research that is firmly grounded in disciplinary realities. This includes: 1)Strengthening discourse and community practices around Open Humanities 2) Providing training and advocacy to implement open research practices 3) Building infrastructural components that enable open research practices across arts and humanities disciplines. 4) Providing a strong voice for arts and humanities research communities to be heard in European and national research policy debates, with special focus on career assessment

8. Deep Impact: A Study on the Impact of Data Papers and Datasets in the Humanities and Social Sciences

Abstract

The humanities and social sciences (HSS) have recently witnessed an exponential growth in data-driven research. In response, attention has been afforded to datasets and accompanying data papers as outputs of the research and dissemination ecosystem. In 2015, two data journals dedicated to HSS disciplines appeared in this landscape: Journal of Open Humanities Data (JOHD) and Research Data Journal for the Humanities and Social Sciences (RDJ). In this paper, we analyse the state of the art in the landscape of data journals in HSS using JOHD and RDJ as exemplars by measuring performance and the deep impact of data-driven projects, including metrics (citation count; Altmetrics, views, downloads, tweets) of data papers in relation to associated research papers and the reuse of associated datasets. Our findings indicate: that data papers are published following the deposit of datasets in a repository and usually following research articles; that data papers have a positive impact on both the metrics of research papers associated with them and on data reuse; and that Twitter hashtags targeted at specific research campaigns can lead to increases in data papers’ views and downloads. HSS data papers improve the visibility of datasets they describe, support accompanying research articles, and add to transparency and the open research agenda.

9. Open Science in the Humanities, or: Open Humanities?

Abstract

Open science refers to both the practices and norms of more open and transparent communication and research in scientific disciplines and the discourse on these practices and norms. There is no such discourse dedicated to the humanities. Though the humanities appear to be less coherent as a cluster of scholarship than the sciences are, they do share unique characteristics which lead to distinct scholarly communication and research practices. A discourse on making these practices more open and transparent needs to take account of these characteristics. The prevalent scientific perspective in the discourse on more open practices does not do so, which confirms that the discourse’s name, open science, indeed excludes the humanities so that talking about open science in the humanities is incoherent. In this paper, I argue that there needs to be a dedicated discourse for more open research and communication practices in the humanities, one that integrates several elements currently fragmented into smaller, unconnected discourses (such as on open access, preprints, or peer review). I discuss three essential elements of open science—preprints, open peer review practices, and liberal open licences—in the realm of the humanities to demonstrate why a dedicated open humanities discourse is required.

Slides presented at the Sharing Digitally: Seminar on Digital Tools and Infrastructures seminar organized by the University of Lviv, Center for Urban History on the 29.09.2021. The presentation aims to outline discipline-specific, yet widely interoperable models of Open Science emerging from community practices of arts and humanities. It will be shown how DARIAH, a pan-European infrastructure for Arts and Humanities builds an open agenda for Arts and Humanities research that is firmly grounded in disciplinary realities. This includes: a suite of Open Science services within DARIAH (Open Science helpdesk, the OpenMethods and the DARIAH Open platforms); training and advocacy activities and also building and strengthening communities of practice, such as the DARIAH Research data management Working Group to critically assess and shape current options for opening up research workflows and to ease compliance with national, European and global research policy mandates such as Open Access or FAIR data.

Abstract

The digital transformation of research opened up radically new potentials in innovation and dissemination in all scientific areas. Open Science is becoming the new normal modus operandi in them, also as increasingly central conditions of research funding. Still, in many cases, the dominant impact of STEM disciplines on the Open Science paradigm makes it uneasy for Arts and Humanities scholars to translate these values to their everyday research realities. Therefore, it is crucially important to establish a dedicated discourse and community practices around the open research culture as it makes sense in the Arts and Humanities disciplines. DARIAH is in a unique position to push forward to an open ecosystem that is organically growing out from real community practices and needs. The presentation aims to outline discipline-specific, yet widely interoperable models of Open Science emerging from community practices of arts and humanities. It will be shown how DARIAH, a pan-European infrastructure for arts and humanities builds an open agenda for arts and humanities research that is firmly grounded in disciplinary realities. DARIAH’s Open Science activities explore and foster domain-specific pathways to the open research culture. This includes promoting innovation through new networks and collaborations; supporting uptake of new research and publication practices through reflection, creation and diffusion of high-quality new knowledge, skills and technologies as well as building infrastructural enablers of open research practices. The impact of these activities primarily manifest itself in changes in research culture; in changes in the EU research policy and it also enables the DARIAH member countries to collectively attract funding through European partnerships to address the gaps in the Open Science landscape together.

Abstract

The concept of open science in relation to open humanities is discussed. The focus is on the enormous growth of data and how to use it for bridging disciplinary and domain boundaries. The European bibliographic database proposal is revisited and presented as a possibility of an all encompassing database which could reflect the true diversity and richness of European SSH research. A database of this kind could produce new synergy in research, open up avenues for collaboration between domains and make visible European research at the global level. ERIH PLUS is also mentioned as a possible starting point for such an endeavor. The challenge from the point of view of interdisciplinarity for SSH is viewed from the point of view of building up focused humanities RIs and databases. Such databases would be geared towards concrete research topics.
