This paper emphasizes the need to broaden organizational perspectives through Open X, which promotes sharing and collaboration over selfishness and competition, instead of that industrial intellectual protection through patents can divert resources essential for the growth of organizations. Faced with new realities, organizations need different management approaches with the potential to transform the reindustrialization resulting from deindustrialization into a Neo-industrialization 2.0. It does not mean tearing down or creating new boundaries but an open culture where organizational efforts have social relevance. In the face of economic interests, Open X can make organizational outcomes more plentiful and robust.

This study examines the impact of a participatory design initiative on issue framing within a professional setting. In a hospital, a participatory design initiative was organised. Participants shared ideas for a more open and innovative working culture before and after the initiative. Comparing the before and after statements revealed a shift in participants' framing, indicating increased self-efficacy, empathy, and systems thinking. Ideas for change transformed from external dependencies to controllable strategies, reflecting a deeper understanding of organizational complexity and a commitment to enhance stakeholder experiences. This highlights the transformative potential of design training in empowering employees to identify and address challenges effectively.

This thesis investigates in which ways attributes of social capital theory such as collaboration, reciprocity and trust can further understandings of the governance of arts festivals. Unlike existing festival studies which incorporate social capital into their analysis from the sole perspective of organisers, attendees or local communities, this research focuses upon the sum of relationships between organisers and participants (defined as artists, performers, organisations and venues). The case study is LightNight Liverpool, a not-for-profit, free to attend, annual one-night arts festival organised by community interest company Open Culture. The use of a third sector festival is deliberate, with my reasoning being that the lack of payment to participants would increase the necessity of attributes of social capital to effectively programme and deliver events. The fieldwork took place between January-September 2018 utilising a mixed-methods approach to explore relationships formed within the festival, combining documentary analysis, netnography (analysing social media interactions) and semi-structured interviews. I position Liverpool's hosting of the 2008 European Capital of Culture designation within the city's contemporary use of culture as a central component of its urban regeneration strategy. Explaining Open Culture's changing role post-Capital of Culture, I examine the links between LightNight Liverpool and the trend of festivalization. I argue that through theming the programme and integrating existing creative communities and cultural quarters, Open Culture have successfully marked the festival with differentiation. Through an analysis of austerity induced cuts to arts funding, I contrast the wider pertinence of social capital theory to the day-to-day working practices of those within the city's arts and cultural sectors. Finally I contend that the tailored support provided by Open Culture to participants through their concurrent roles as programmer, intermediary and producer showcases the pre-eminence of leaders in providing access to resources and mobilising networks of contacts within arts festivals. The implication of these findings go against the majority of social capital literature which underplays the importance of leaders, with this thesis arguing their primacy as catalyst of its successful generation and diffusion.

We explore gaps in Wikipedia's coverage of the visual arts by comparing the representation of 100 artists and 100 artworks from the Western canon against corresponding sets of notable artists and artworks from non-Western cultures. We measure the coverage of these two sets of topics across Wikipedia as a whole and for its individual language versions. We also compare the coverage for Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata, sister projects of Wikipedia that host digital media and structured data. We show that all these platforms strongly favour the Western canon, giving many times more coverage to Western art. We highlight specific examples of differing coverage of visual art inside and outside the Western canon. We find that European language versions of Wikipedia are generally more "Western" in their coverage and Asian languages more "global," with interesting exceptions, including that English is one of the most “global.” We suggest how both Wikipedia and the wider cultural sector can address this gap in content and thus give Wikipedia a truly global perspective on the visual arts.

The pyrolytic conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into fuels and chemicals is a promising option for the valorization of agricultural and forestry residues. However, technological developments are still needed to maximize product recovery and carbon fixation of the pyrolysis process. The pyrolysis aqueous condensate (PAC), a pyrolysis by-product, has a high water content and is highly toxic, hampering its use. The anaerobic digestion of PAC from different biomasses has been proven a viable technology for PAC valorization and detoxification, but its toxicity limits the methanogenic potential. Alternatively, methanation or VFA production from syngas by anaerobic mixed cultures are technologies of scientific interest. This study investigates the potential of a two-stage process to convert the carbon and energy in syngas and PAC into L-malate. PAC and syngas were co-fermented by two mixed cultures at 37 and 55 °C, identifying kinetic inhibitions and the effects of increasing PAC concentrations on the product pool. The media from selected mixed culture fermentations were then inoculated with Aspergillus oryzae for L-malate production. The results show that mixed cultures can perform simultaneous syngas fermentation and PAC detoxification. While PAC concentrations above 2% completely inhibited methanogenesis, CO consumption was inhibited at PAC concentrations above 5%, regardless of the temperature. In fermentations where PAC inhibited methanation, the mixed cultures channelled the carbon and electrons from syngas and PAC to volatile fatty acids or acetate/H
2 production, depending on the incubation temperature. Substantial detoxification of PAC was observed under PAC concentrations up to 10% independently of the rates of syngas metabolism. PAC detoxification enabled the further valorization of the acetate produced via syngas and PAC fermentations into L-malate, achieving yields up to 0.17 mM/mM. These results are promising for the development of an integrated process that simultaneously detoxifies and recovers value from gaseous and aqueous waste streams originating from pyrolysis. The webinar “Medieval archival sources in the digital world. The challenge of treating and visualizing semi-structured data”, organized by the Digital Culture Laboratory (UNIPI) and by the Engineering Historical Memory project. This thematic dossier aims to offer a brief account of the results of the workshop, with particular attention to future collaborations and experimentations in the field of processing and extracting information from semi-structured editions of archival documents. These advanced features are essential to broaden the use of digital editions of archival sources and other written documents, making them more flexible and open to research tools. The central problem concerns the relationship between text coding and the creation of good interfaces, to which the user can accessintuitively.

- Abstract
Background: Shoulder arthroplasty revision is associated with a high prevalence of prosthetic infection, and diagnosis remains difficult. The primary aim of the study was to determine the diagnostic accuracy of percutaneous synovial biopsy (PSB) and joint aspiration compared with open culture results in detecting infection in revision shoulder arthroplasty. The second aim was to determine whether biopsy location within the shoulder was associated with culture status., Methods: This was a multicenter prospective cohort study involving 4 sites and 69 patients undergoing revision shoulder arthroplasty. The cohort was 57% female with a mean age of 64 years. Preoperative fluoroscopic-guided PSBs and aspirations were carried out by a musculoskeletal radiologist before revision shoulder arthroplasty. The original prostheses consisted of hemiarthroplasties, total shoulder arthroplasties (TSAs), resurfacing TSA, reverse shoulder arthroplasties (RSAs), and antibiotic spacers. Six synovial tissue biopsies from separate regions in the shoulder were obtained both preoperatively and intraoperatively. The shoulder joint was aspirated, and synovial fluid collected, if available. Infection was considered positive in the setting of 2 or more matching positive cultures. The PSB cultures were considered "true positive" if the PSB cultures matched the open biopsy cultures., Results: Nineteen percent had positive infection based on PSB, and 23% had confirmed culture-positive infections based on intraoperative biopsy. The diagnostic accuracy of PSB compared with open biopsy was as follows: sensitivity 0.37 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.13-0.61), specificity 0.81 (95% CI 0.7-0.91), positive predictive value 0.37 (95% CI 0.13-0.61), negative predictive value 0.81 (95% CI 0.70-0.91), positive likelihood ratio 1.98, and negative likelihood ratio 0.77. Of the 71 patients from whom aspirates were collected, aspiration yielded synovial fluid in 33 patients. Preoperative aspiration detected no infections confirmed positive by open biopsy and correctly identified 81% of absent infections. The diagnostic accuracy of aspiration compared with open biopsy was as follows: sensitivity 0%, specificity 0.81 (95% CI 0.66-0.96), positive predictive value 0%, and negative predictive value 0.78 (95% CI 0.63-0.93). Biopsy location within the shoulder was not associated with infection status., Discussion: Preoperative aspiration detected none of the infections proven positive via open biopsy. Although PSB was superior to synovial fluid aspirate, poor likelihood ratios suggest that PSB is not useful as an isolated test in the preoperative workup of the potentially infected patient. Biopsy location was not associated with culture status suggesting that the capsule is uniformly infected, and the location of tissue biopsies does not appear to matter., (Copyright © 2024 Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Board of Trustees. The subject of this study is contemporary odeons in Poland, where 11 covered amphitheaters (odeons) have been built since 2005. The odeons were selected from a wider collection of 57 functioning amphitheaters. The study collected data on location, form, function, and construction. The data sources included the literature, archival research, design documentation, and competition entries. Descriptive and graphical comparative analyses of the phenomena, based on the statistics for completed structures and on design experiments in the case of unbuilt structures, were the two main research methods used in this study. The emergence and development directions of the typology of open cultural spaces from amphitheaters to odeons are presented in a global and regional context. Their interrelationships, affecting form and function, were also analyzed. The influence of high-end materials that were used to create these complex, large-scale spatial structures, and their impact on the environment, has been presented. The contemporary roofs covering the entertainment and stage complex were analyzed in relation to environmental factors, determining the location of the odeons. The functional aspects of these buildings and their cultural significance on a local, regional and global scale were discussed. The odeon in Biała Podlaska, built in 2019, was chosen as a case study to show, in detail, the complexity of the formation of contemporary odeons. In the discussion on the direction of the further evolution of open spaces for culture, an example of an unrealized competition design proposal of mobile roofing forms for the eighteenth-century amphitheater in the Royal Baths Park in Warsaw, Poland, was presented. The conclusions emphasize the environmental, spatial, functional, social and economic values of the establishment and functioning of contemporary odeons as open spaces of culture that are compliant with the principles of sustainable development.

Syngas fermentation has been successfully implemented in commercial-scale plants and can enable the biochemical conversion of the driest fractions of biomass through synthesis gas (H2, CO2, and CO). The process relies on optimized acetogenic strains able to reach and maintain high productivity of ethanol and acetate. In parallel, microbial communities have shown to be the best choice for the production of valuable medium-chain carboxylates through anaerobic fermentation of biomass, demanding low technical complexity and being able to realize simultaneous hydrolysis of the substrate. Each of the two technologies benefits from different strong points and has different challenges to overcome. This review discusses the rationales for merging these two seemingly disparate technologies by analyzing previous studies and drawing opinions based on the lessons learned from such studies. For keeping the technical demands of the resulting process low, a case is built for using microbial communities instead of pure strains. For that to occur, a shift from conventional syngas-based to "syngas-aided" anaerobic fermentation is suggested. Strategies for tackling the intricacies of working simultaneously with communities and syngas, such as competing pathways, and thermodynamic aspects are discussed as well as the stoichiometry and economic feasibility of the concept. Overall, syngas-aided anaerobic fermentation seems to be a promising concept for the biorefinery of the future. However, the effects of process parameters on microbial interactions have to be understood in greater detail, in order to achieve and sustain feasible medium-chain carboxylate and alcohol productivity. In open-culture fermentation of lignocellulosic biomass, the gas composition in the fermentor headspace can suppress or favor certain fermentation pathways and thereby alter product concentrations. This study focuses on the effect of hydrogen and carbon dioxide concentrations in the headspace of open-culture fermentation of raw corn stover (80%) and chicken manure (20%). Four headspace gas compositions were evaluated at 2.05 × 105 Pa (abs): pure hydrogen, pure carbon dioxide, mixture of hydrogen and carbon dioxide (1:1), and pure nitrogen (control). Using pure hydrogen in the headspace increased the acetic acid equivalents by 13%, but did not change the product spectrum considerably. Using pure carbon dioxide in the headspace reduced the acetic acid equivalents by 4%, but shifted the acid spectrum from short toward medium-chain carboxylic acids. Using hydrogen:carbon dioxide (1:1) in the fermentor headspace increased the acetic acid equivalents by 29%. • Using lignocellulose, the effect of H 2 and CO 2 on carboxylate production was investigated. • Using pure H 2 in the headspace increased the acetic acid equivalents by 13%. • Using pure CO 2 shifted the acid spectrum toward medium-chain carboxylic acids. • Using H 2 :CO 2 (1:1) in the headspace increased the acetic acid equivalents by 29%. Deliverable 13.1 for the WorldFAIR Project’s Cultural Heritage Work Package (WP13) outlines current practices guiding online digital image sharing by institutions charged with providing care and access to cultural memory, in order to identify how these practices may be adapted to promote and support the FAIR Principles for data sharing. The report has been compiled by the Digital Repository of Ireland as a key information resource for developing the recommendations forthcoming in Deliverable 13.2. The DRI is Ireland’s national repository for the arts, humanities and social sciences. A Working Group of cultural heritage professionals has been invited to contribute feedback. There are well-established standards and traditions driving the various approaches to image sharing in the sector, both local and global, which influence everything from the creation of digital image files, their intellectual organisation and level of description, to statements of rights governing use. Additionally, there are technological supports and infrastructures that have emerged to facilitate these practices which have significant investment and robust community support. These practices and technologies serve the existing communities of users well, primarily the needs of government, business and higher education, as well as the broader general public. Recommendations for adapting established collections delivery mechanisms to facilitate the use of cultural heritage images as research data would ideally not supersede or duplicate processes that also serve these other communities of users, and any solutions proposed in the context of the WorldFAIR Project must be made in respect of these wider contexts for image sharing. Visit WorldFAIR online at http://worldfair-project.eu. WorldFAIR is funded by the EC HORIZON-WIDERA-2021-ERA-01-41 Coordination and Support Action under Grant Agreement No. 101058393.

Summary: The current Special Issue is a synthetic overview of 21 published articles. The contact point of architecture-art-engineering is multidimensional, and therefore, this synthesis of works takes into account three criteria: (a) research subject indication, (b) research problem identification, and (c) sublimation of the research techniques and instrumentality used. Research problems, scientific values, and utility values have been highlighted. This synthetic tripartite is intended to make it easier for the reader to find an interesting subject and instrumentality. As the topics of the articles overlap, guided by the dominant values of each article, five subject groups have been sublimated. These are: structural aspects and design, digitization, architectural heritage, aesthetics and emotions vs. engineering, and interior architecture. The characteristic values of each subject group are presented. The indicated new design and research tools do not separate but combine the subject industries; they connect the entities of the investment process.

This article discusses how alternative software infrastructures can emerge out of frictions, failure, and repair in the attempts of media creators to evade piracy. Using a case from the geographical fringes of Russia called Morevna Project, and theories of infrastructures and repair, the article suggests how repair can lead to the slow, mundane and fragile formation of what I refer to as ‘situated’ digital infrastructures for cultural production. While pirate-based media production can push creators to search for and develop alternative infrastructures, the latter emerge as fragile frameworks that are constantly threatened from collapse and suspension. The continuous work of integrating diverse interests across local and online media-related contexts and practices becomes an essential stabilising force needed to perpetuate these infrastructures and prevents them from falling back into oblivion. As we prepare for the 9th IDIERI in New Zealand, this paper revisits the issues foregrounded at the 2015 Institute and offers possible prompts for considering the state of our art today. A meditation on the concept of ‘open culture’ - the Institute theme - this keynote explores Kuo Pao Kun’s injunction ‘to extend one’s self beyond one’s own culture’ and how and why our capacity for that ‘extension’ is so constrained. Exploring the ‘famine of quality conversation’ and exampled by a case study, the author offers three possibilities that may make it difficult for ‘the light to get in’ and ways in which our own practice may act as a deterrent to that occlusion. In fermentations where PAC inhibited methanation, the mixed cultures channelled the carbon and electrons from syngas and PAC to volatile fatty acids or acetate/H2 production, depending on the incubation temperature.

Multicultural societies in the twenty-first century grapple with increasing tensions of difference, amid rapidly changing global conditions that reiterate reductive norms. Young people engaged in developing inclusive alternatives, particularly in the arts, are important players in the process of shifting towards more empowering options that incorporate cultural mix and permeability. Even if these do not become part of a mainstream imagining, they provide significant expressions of how young people grapple with critical questions related to living in pluralist contexts polarised by official policy. In some postcolonial multicultural societies, such as Malaysia and Singapore, the spaces to play with culture and experiment with crossing boundaries are rare, due to acute sensitivities about race, religion and language. Youth theatre, which is largely school-based and thus restrained by institutional goals and expectations, seldom offers young people a chance to reflect openly about issues that affect them. Thus, questions arise about how theatre-making for and with young people can be pushed towards meaningful cultural engagement, that empowers participants, and those who facilitate these programmes, with frameworks that help youth enact and embody bold, critical and empathetic envisionings of cultural difference. This article examines the importance of play as a dynamic that produces inclusivity, particularly in culturally complex terrains that struggle to deal with multicultural negotiation. It advocates the importance of playful encounters with difference, and argues for multicultural play as an important foundational process in working across lines of difference. It draws on the work of Krishen Jit and Kuo Pao Kun, pioneering contemporary theatre directors, writers and educators in Malaysia and Singapore, whose theatre practice and philosophy underlined the importance of multicultural play, and thus provided critical examples of how difference could be engaged as a positive dynamic through ‘Open Culture’ (Kuo, P. K. 2005b. “Contemplating an Open Culture: Transcending Multiracialism.” InThe Complete Works of Kuo Pao Kun: Volume Seven – Papers and Speeches, edited by B. L. Tan, 248–257. Singapore: World Scientific.), and an understanding of theatre as a ‘safe precinct’ (Jit, K. 1984. “Children's Theatre Growing Free from Orthodoxy.”New Sunday Times, March 3, 1984.).

- Abstract
The webinar Medieval archival sources in the digital world. The challenge of treating and visualizing semi-structured data, organized by the Laboratorio di Cultura Digitale and the head of the Engineering Historical Memory project, was held on 22-23 June 2020. This thematic dossier aims to offer a brief account of the results of the workshop held on a virtual platform, with particular attention to future collaboration and experimentation initiatives in the field of processing and extracting information from semi-structured editions of archival documents. Advanced functionalities of this type are in fact essential to broaden the use of digital editions of archival sources and other written documents, making them more flexible and open to algorithms' reading tools. The central problem concerns the relationship between coding and the creation of interfaces that are as simple and immediate as possible, in which the user (human or artificial) can intuitively access.

Digital technology has made culture more accessible than ever before. Texts, audio, pictures and video can easily be produced, disseminated, used and remixed using devices that are increasingly user-friendly and affordable. However, along with this technological democratization comes a paradoxical flipside: the norms regulating culture's use —copyright and related rights —have become increasingly restrictive. This book brings together essays by academics, librarians, entrepreneurs, activists and policy makers, who were all part of the EU-funded Communia project. Together the authors argue that the Public Domain —that is, the informational works owned by all of us, be that literature, music, the output of scientific research, educational material or public sector information —is fundamental to a healthy society. The essays range from more theoretical papers on the history of copyright and the Public Domain, to practical examples and case studies of recent projects that have engaged with the principles of Open Access and Creative Commons licensing. The book is essential reading for anyone interested in the current debate about copyright and the Internet. It opens up discussion and offers practical solutions to the difficult question of the regulation of culture at the digital age. The free PDF edition of this title was made possible by generous funding received from the European Union (eContentplus framework project ECP-2006-PSI-610001).

Freely accessible online databases developed by cultural and artistic institutions (e.g., museums, libraries, universities, studios, etc.) enable the transnational dissemination of catalogues of cultural and creative works, exploiting the advantages of modern technologies. Intelligent tools, which use advanced algorithms to classify and contextualize data, can foster knowledge mainly in two ways: (1) providing a stable and accessible basis for large amounts of data; (2) promoting cultural heritage. A case of skillful use of such tools is the Saint-Raymond Museum, the archaeological museum of Toulouse. For several years it has been working on the open data front and on putting its catalogue online on Wikimedia platforms, in various forms.

Over the last two decades, storytellers have engaged in an effervescent period of experimentation and innovation in storytelling. In the realm of documentary, makers have adopted, combined and developed web technologies to reveal complex and multi-perspective stories. This doctoral dissertation explores how independent authors, designers and coders coalesce to make and circulate interactive documentary (i-doc). The thesis is based on a research-creation approach which includes an empirical case study of Field Trip (2019)—a 92-minute i-doc produced by a small team in Berlin, which includes the author. It is further informed by i-docs produced in the last decade in Canada and Germany, and builds upon two peer reviewed journal articles published in 2018 and 2020, and a book chapter to be published in 2021. The thesis concentrates on i-doc making from a production studies perspective. It surfaces the common characteristics of interactive documentary and uses the analytic framework of media innovations (Dogruel, 2014) to contextualise the practice. The conceptual focus lies on the notion of impact of i-doc storytelling, which the thesis seeks to critically deconstruct, problematise, and discuss. Impact is a widely used term in digital storytelling practice and theory. It means different things to different stakeholders in the storytelling sector, thereby leading to an expectation gap. Using multi-method research, including analytic autoethnography (Anderson, 2006) and constructivist grounded theory (Charmaz, 1995), the dissertation identifies a number of types of impact. The findings point to the importance of balancing impact expectations related to the story, with those related to the production process. This is particularly relevant, the study finds, for securing a sustainable innovation culture in the digital storytelling sector. By articulating a societal impact framework, the dissertation contributes to a better understanding of the cultural value of contemporary interactive storytelling practice.

Head tightness, soluble solid content (SSC), and rutin level were investigated in asparagus spears harvested at different lengths. We found no correlation between spear length and SSC per dry weight (DW) in spearheads. Spearheads became looser and the rutin content of the spearhead increased as spear length at harvest increased, although appearance quality decreased. These findings revealed that spears previously discarded, because their length did not meet the length specifications, contained abundant rutin. Therefore, spears for which the optimum harvesting time has been missed are a useful rutin source. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Digital technologies now enable books and other digital resources to be openly available to those with access to the Internet. This study examined the financial viability of a religious publisher that put free digital versions of eight of its print books on the Internet. The cost to put these eight books online was $940. Over a 10-week period, these books were downloaded 102,256 times and sales of these books increased 26%. Online sales increased at a much higher rate. Comparisons with historical book sales and sales of comparable titles indicate that that this increase may have been connected to the free books being available. Two slides for a 3-min lightning talk at the Climate Restoration workshop held at the University of Virginia on 17 January 2020. Slide 1: Climate restoration needs open sharing The meeting was about climate restoration, and the visualization of the carbon cycle is there to highlight the complexity of such an endeavour, conscious that similar complexity exists for other aspects of climate like water, energy or nitrogen cycles. In order to address climate restoration in any meaningful way, we thus need to apply a whole range of scientific, engineering, political, social, economic and other approaches, which could be symbolized by a Swiss Army Knife. The Swiss Army Knife actually depicted sits one zoom level below, highlighting the main shades of openness that are at humanity's disposal. The background image depicts a scene in a National Park as a reminder of how intact nature looks like. Slide 2: Open sharing maximizes societal impact The bullet points outline some of the ways in which the claim in the title could be examined. The slide also provides contact data and a persistent identifier for this specific slide set, the DOI. I forgot to link it to https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.3610757 but once you are here, this probably does not matter any more. The DOI was included to highlight that even things as small as a pair of slides can be shared in a way that is citable and that contextualizes the resource being shared.

- Abstract
For that to occur, a shift from conventional syngas-based to “syngas-aided” anaerobic fermentation is suggested.
