Craniofacial morphology is extremely diversified within bat phylogeny, however growth and development of the palate in bats remains unstudied. The formation of both midline and bilateral orofacial clefts in laryngeally echolocating bats, morphologically similar to the syndromic and non‐syndromic cleft palate in humans, are not well understood. Developmental series of prenatal samples (n = 128) and adults (n = 10) of eight bat species (two pteropodids, four rhinolophoids, and two yangochiropterans), and two non‐bat mammals (Mus musculus and Erinaceus amurensis), were CT‐scanned and cranial bones forming the upper jaw complex were three‐dimensionally visualised to assess whether differences in palate development can be observed across bat phylogeny. Volumetric data of bones composing the upper jaw complex were measured to quantify palate growth. The premaxilla is relatively reduced in bats compared to other mammals and its shape is heterogeneous depending on the presence and type of orofacial cleft across bat phylogeny. The palatine process of premaxillary bones is lacking in pteropodids and yangochiropterans, whereas the premaxilla is a mobile structure which is only in contact caudally with the maxilla by a fibrous membrane or suture in rhinolophoids. In all bats, maxillary bones progressively extend caudally and palatine bones, in some cases split into three branches, extend caudally so that they are completely fused to another one medially prior to the birth. Ossification of the vomer and fusion of the maxillary and palatine bones occur earlier in rhinolophoids than in pteropodids and yangochiropterans. The vomer ossifies bilaterally from two different ossification centres in yangochiropterans, which is uncommon in other bats and non‐bat mammals. Analysis of ontogenetic allometric trajectories of the upper jaw complex revealed faster development of maxillary, vomer, and palatine bones in yangochiropterans compared to other bats, especially rhinolophoids. Ancestral state reconstruction revealed that yangochiropterans have a higher magnitude of change in ossification rate compared to other bats and E. amurensis a lower magnitude compared to M. musculus and bats. This study provides new evidence of heterochronic shifts in craniofacial development and growth across bat phylogeny that can improve understanding of the developmental differences characterising nasal and oral emission strategies. In this study, we analyzed the ontogenetic trajectories of shell morphology in some Cretaceous tetragonitid ammonoid specimens (Tetragonitidae) collected from the Tomamae, Mikasa, and Hamanaka areas of Hokkaido, Japan. In all examined species, the ontogenetic trajectories of septal spacing between successive chambers had similar characteristics during their early ontogeny: two cycles, each comprising an increase and subsequent decrease in septal spacing until ~ 30th septum. The trends of whorl expansion rate changed at 5–7 or ~ 10 mm in the Gaudryceratinae and ~ 3 mm shell diameter in the Tetragonitinae. Based on these observations, we propose that the planktic phases of Gaudryceratinae and Tetragonitinae ended at those shell diameters. In this study, we analysed the ontogenetic trajectories of septal spacing between succeeding chambers and the shell morphology of the Cretaceous ammonoids of the subfamily Desmoceratinae (Damesites damesi intermedius, Tragodesmoceroides subcostatus, and Desmoceras latidorsatum). The ontogenetic trajectories of septal spacing in the examined three species demonstrate a general common trend: a cycle of increasing to decreasing septal spacing until ~10th–16th septum. At the end of this cycle, desmoceratine ammonoids possibly changed their habits from planktic to various modes of life (e.g. demersal with or without diurnal vertical migrations), considering the theoretical calculation of total density in seawater in previous reports. The results suggest that: 1, the desmoceratine ammonoids had a common pattern of septal spacing during the post-embryonic stage, regardless of geological age or region; and 2, the shell diameter at which the planktic mode of life ended was almost uniform (~1.5–2 mm in shell diameter) for ~30 my (i.e. during the Albian– earliest Campanian) within the Cretaceous lineage of the subfamily Desmoceratinae. In this study, we analysed the ontogenetic trajectories of septal spacing between succeeding chambers of the gaudryceratid ammonoid, Gaudryceras tenuiliratum, which were collected in the Tomamae and Mikasa areas of Hokkaido, Japan. The ontogenetic trajectories of septal spacing in G. tenuiliratum demonstrate a general trend: two cycles of increasing to decreasing septal spacing until about the 30th septum, gradually decreasing septal spacing until about the 70th septum, and then gradually increasing septal spacing at least until about the 110th septum. The ontogenetic trajectories of the whorl expansion rate (WER) in our specimens also demonstrated that a decreasing trend changed into an increasing trend at a conch diameter of c. 5–7 mm. This conch diameter corresponds to the end of the second cycle of increasing to decreasing septal spacing occurring before about the 30th septum, at which point G. tenuiliratum possibly transitioned from planktic to nektobenthic habits. No significant differences were detected in the ontogenetic trajectories of septal spacing and conch shape between the two areas, which implies that the ontogenetic trajectory patterns of septal spacing in the Late Cretaceous ammonoids were taxonomy‐dependent rather than environment‐dependent, although this should be further examined with G. tenuiliratum collected from areas outside of Hokkaido. Acrotretides are extinct micromorphic brachiopods that exhibited considerable morphological variation during their rapid evolution in the early Palaeozoic. The plano‐conical shells of acrotretides are distinct in comparison to other brachiopod groups and despite their diversity and abundance in early Palaeozoic communities, their origins, early evolution, life history and phylogeny are poorly understood. Here, we employ advanced geometric morphometrics to quantitatively investigate ontogenetic variation and allometry in the ventral valve of the oldest known acrotretide species from the early Cambrian of South China. Our results identify substantial shape variation for Eohadrotreta zhenbaensis, along with a parabolic morphological trajectory through ontogeny, demonstrating a remarkable reversal to PC1 values equivalent to those obtained for juveniles, during later ontogenetic stages. The evolutionary novel body plan (diminutive and plano‐conical) of Acrotretida was established gradually during two phases of allometry, formed initially during the final stage of the Cambrian evolutionary radiation from an ancestral low, equivalved lingulide body plan. The development of a conical shaped valve seems to have resulted in an overall smaller body size, when compared with non‐conical forms. The heterochronic processes responsible for generating these ontogenetic modifications at different allometric phases may have facilitated the evolutionary diversification of acrotretide brachiopods during the early Palaeozoic. Commerson's dolphin (Cephalorhynchus commersonii), Peale's dolphin (Lagenorhynchus australis), dusky dolphin (Lagenorhynchus obscurus), and hourglass dolphin (Lagenorhynchus cruciger) are closely related species occurring in the Southern Hemisphere. Even though they are partially sympatric, they have evolved towards diverse foraging strategies, prey, and habitat preferences. Size variation occurs both among and within species. Our goal was to study the allometric patterns and ontogenetic trajectories in the vertebral column of these dolphins related to their ecology. We choose nine functionally homologous vertebrae in each column and digitized five different tridimensional configurations, containing 28 to 41 landmarks depending on the functional region under analysis. We explored different levels of allometry (static, ontogenetic, and evolutionary) using multivariate regressions of shape vs. log-transformed centroid size. We compared ontogenetic allometry regression vectors to evidence differences in growth patterns. Finally, we calculated Procrustes distances of shape configurations to determine the timing of shape shifts. Of the studied species, When compared to the Lagenorhynchus species, Commerson's dolphin showed the highest degrees of allometry, both static and ontogenetic. The macroevolutive trends indicate a high degree of evolutionary morphological change, which could be associated with the rapid evolutionary radiation proposed for the group. Teeth in sharks are shed and replaced throughout their lifetime. Morphological dental changes through ontogeny have been identified in several species and have been correlated with shifts in diet and the acquisition of sexual maturity. However, these changes were rarely quantified in detail along multiple ontogenetic stages, which makes it difficult to infer the developmental processes responsible for the observed plasticity. In this work, we use micro‐computed tomography and 3D geometric morphometrics to describe and analyze the tooth size and shape diversity across three ontogenetic stages (hatchling, juvenile, and sexually mature) in the large‐spotted catshark Scyliorhinus stellaris (Linnaeus, 1758). We first describe the intra‐individual variation of tooth form for each sex at each ontogenetic stage. We provide a tooth morphospace for palatoquadrate and Meckelian teeth and identify dental features, such as relative size and number of cusps, involved in the range of variation of the observed morphologies. We then use these shape data to draw developmental trajectories between ontogenetic stages and for each tooth position within the jaw to characterize ontogenetic patterns of sexual dimorphism. We highlight the emergence of gynandric heterodonty between the juvenile and mature ontogenetic stages, with mature females having tooth morphologies more similar to juveniles' than mature males that display regression in the number of accessory cusps. In this study, the ontogenetic trajectories of septal spacing between succeeding chambers of five modern cuttlefishes, Sepia esculenta, S. lycidas, S. latimanus, S. pharaonic and Sepiella japonica, which were all wild‐caught around Japan, were analysed. The ontogenetic trajectories of septal spacing of all examined cuttlefishes demonstrate a decrease in septal spacing followed by an increase during the earliest ontogenetic stage. This trend is assumed to be related to hatching. After the rapid decrease and increase in septal spacing, species‐dependent trends occur irrespective of sex and locality. Based on cluster analyses of general trends recognized in each species, the five examined species can be categorized into two groups: (1) a group by S. pharaonis, S. esculenta and Sepiella japonica; and (2) S. latimanus and S. lycidas as more distant branching groups within the five examined species. This classification is concordant with some phylogenetic clades determined from DNA analyses. Therefore, we hypothesized that the ontogenetic trajectories of septal spacing among modern cuttlefishes are phylogenetically dependent. If this hypothesis holds in fossil cuttlefishes, the examination of ontogenetic trajectories of septal spacing would give new insight into the recognition not only of the life history but also of the phylogeny of fossil cuttlefishes. The ontogenetic trajectories of septal spacing between succeeding chambers of two phylloceratid ammonoids, Hypophylloceras subramosum and Phyllopachyceras ezoense, from the Haboro and Kotanbetsu areas, north‐western Hokkaido, Japan, were analysed. The ontogenetic trajectories of septal spacing of H. subramosum demonstrate a general trend with large intraspecific variation: two cycles of increasing to decreasing spacing followed by almost constant spacing. The large intraspecific variation can be subdivided into three types, making this species polymorphic. The ontogenetic trajectories of septal spacing of P. ezoense also show intraspecific variation, but with a different trend: one cycle of increasing to decreasing spacing and an increasing trend after that. The intraspecific variation can be subdivided into two types, which suggests that this species is dimorphic, possibly sexually dimorphic. Dimorphism is supported by two observations: (1) the difference in the ontogenetic trajectories of septal spacing is only seen in the later ontogenetic stages; and (2) the two types co‐occur with comparable abundance throughout all stratigraphic horizons. Background and Aims Heteroblastic plant species, whose morphology or growth habit changes suddenly during development, offer unique opportunities to investigate the role of selection in canalizing development or increasing the adaptive importance of plasticity. Leaf forms of the Hawaiian tree Acacia koa (koa) change morphologically and physiologically during the first year of growth, providing time to study abiotic factors influencing transition rates relative to other Acacia species. Methods The roles of light and water availability in triggering transition to the mature leaf form in contrasting (wet/dry) ecotypes of koa were investigated using a novel modelling technique to distinguish between chronological and ontogenetic controls in triggering transition. A light quality treatment was included to test interactions of heterophylly (the presence of multiple leaf forms) with heteroblastic processes on the resulting phenotype at transition. Key Results Increased light intensity increased transition rates, but reduced red to far-red light (R:FR) ratios did not affect transition rates, solidifying the current paradigm of heteroblasty. However, evidence was found for earlier transition ontogenetically under water stress, which is not part of the current paradigm and could differentiate the role of heteroblasty in some Acacia species versus other heteroblastic species. Ecotypic responses also indicate that plasticity of development could vary across koa's range and the adaptive significance of heteroblasty could be marginalized or amplified dependent on the disparate selective pressures present across koa's range. Conclusions The use of novel survival functions and a species with an elongated transition time helped to elucidate abiotic modifiers of ontogenetic trajectories. Differences in ontogenetic trajectories between contrasting ecotypes suggest that ongoing climate and land use change will have non-uniform effects on koa regeneration and establishment dynamics across its range. Three‐dimensional (3D) virtual facial models facilitate genotype–phenotype correlations and diagnostics in clinical dysmorphology. Within cross‐sectional analysis of both genders we evaluated facial features in representative cohorts of Czech patients with Williams–Beuren‐(WBS; 12 cases), Noonan‐(NS; 14), and 22q11.2 deletion syndromes (22q11.2DS; 20) and compared their age‐related developmental trajectories to 21 age, sex and ethnically matched controls in 3–18 years of age. Using geometric morphometry statistically significant differences in facial morphology were found in all cases compared to controls. The dysmorphic features observed in WBS were specific and manifested in majority of cases. During ontogenesis, dysmorphic features associated with increased facial convexity become more pronounced whereas other typical features remained relatively stable. Dysmorphic features observed in NS cases were mostly apparent during childhood and gradually diminished with age. Facial development had a similar progress as in controls, while there has been increased growth of patients' nose and chin in adulthood. Facial characteristics observed in 22q11.2DS, except for hypoplastic alae nasi, did not correspond with the standard description of its facial phenotype because of marked facial heterogeneity of this clinical entity. Because of the sensitivity of 3D facial morphometry we were able to reach statistical significance even in smaller retrospective patient cohorts, which proves its clinical utility within the routine setting. Abstract: Complex life cycles may evolve to dissociate distinct developmental phases in an organism's lifetime. However, genetic or environmental factors may restrict trait independence across life stages, constraining ontogenetic trajectories. Quantifying covariance across life stages and their temporal variability is fundamental in understanding life‐history phenotypes and potential distributions and consequences for selection. We studied developmental constraints in an intertidal fish (Bathygobius cocosensis: Gobiidae) with a discrete pelagic larval phase and benthic juvenile phase. We tested whether traits occurring earlier in life affected those expressed later, and whether larval traits were decoupled from postsettlement juvenile traits. Sampling distinct cohorts from three annual breeding seasons afforded tests of temporally variability in trait covariance. From otoliths (fish ear stones), we measured hatch size, larval duration, pelagic growth (larval traits) and early postsettlement growth (juvenile trait) in 124 juvenile B. cocoensis. We used path analyses to model trait relationships with respect to their chronological expression, comparing models among seasons. We also modelled the effect of season and hatch date on each individual trait to quantify their inherent variability. Our path analyses demonstrated a decoupling of larval traits on juvenile growth. Within the larval phase, longer larval durations resulted in greater pelagic growth, and larger size‐at‐settlement. There was also evidence that larger hatch size might reduce larval durations, but this effect was only marginally significant. Although pelagic and postsettlement growth were decoupled, pelagic growth had postsettlement consequences: individuals with high pelagic growth were among the largest fish at settlement, and remained among the largest early postsettlement. We observed no evidence that trait relationships varied among breeding seasons, but larval duration differed among breeding seasons, and was shorter for larvae hatching later within each season. Overall, we demonstrate mixed support for the expectation that traits in different life stages are independent. While postsettlement growth was decoupled from larval traits, pelagic development had consequences for the size of newly settled juveniles. Temporal consistency in trait covariances implies that genetic and/or environmental factors influencing them were stable over our three‐year study. Based on well-preserved belemnites, the ontogenetic trajectories of septal spacing between succeeding chambers were analysed. In the examined species ( Passaloteuthis laevigata, Parapassaloteuthis zieteni and Pseudohasitites longiformis) that come from Buttenheim, Germany, and Lixhausen, France, the ontogenetic trajectories of septal spacing follow exponentially increasing trends with no decreasing phase of septal crowding during the earliest ontogenetic stage. The absence of a decreasing trend at the earliest ontogenetic stage is a unique character in contrast with those in modern cuttlefish and ancient and modern nautiloids, in which the decreasing trends are related to hatching events. These ontogenetic septal spacing trends suggest that the belemnite hatchlings had only a protoconch with no chamber. These belemnite hatchlings with no chamber and therefore small embryonic shell diameter are similar to those of ammonoids. Significant difference in a statistical test that compared the protoconch size between the two localities, might suggest that there was limited transportation at the embryonic stage, although it could also just indicate differences in regional environmental conditions, age and/or degree of time averaging which might differ between the examined taxa. In contrast to the well-established and highly accurate morphological methods available for sexing adult skeletons, juvenile sex estimation is widely recognised as a difficult task that faces a series of challenges. The acquisition of 3D data, and construction of 3D models from volume or surface scans, has become increasingly common in forensic sciences, and these data offer considerable opportunity for the development and refinement of methods in sex estimation. The suitability and potential of virtual methods for juvenile sex estimation are evaluated with the aims of identifying (1) the benefits and challenges associated with virtual data and quantitative analysis of 3D models, and (2) pathways that may lead to practical improvements for sexing juveniles. The issues associated with sex estimation in juveniles are discussed and approached in the context of a framework that unifies classification results for a given trait, which provide information on its capacity to discriminate between the sexes, with the underlying patterns of dimorphism over ontogeny. Virtual collections of 3D models are suggested as integral to this framework because they enable the magnitude and mode of sexual dimorphism to be comprehensively quantified for a chosen trait or set of traits. Those data can be used to inform decisions about how to apply a method for sex estimation to maximize its success. Virtual collections, through extending the scope of analyses and impacting the way in which questions on sexual dimorphism in juveniles may be answered, are undoubtedly set to play a central role in future research. Background and Aims The development of plant secondary metabolites during early life stages can have significant ecological and evolutionary implications for plant–herbivore interactions. Foliar terpenes influence a broad range of ecological interactions, including plant defence, and their expression may be influenced by ontogenetic and genetic factors. This study investigates the role of these factors in the expression of foliar terpene compounds in Eucalyptus globulus seedlings.Methods Seedlings were sourced from ten families each from three genetically distinct populations, representing relatively high and low chemical resistance to mammalian herbivory. Cotyledon-stage seedlings and consecutive leaf pairs of true leaves were harvested separately across an 8-month period, and analysed for eight monoterpene compounds and six sesquiterpene compounds.Key Results Foliar terpenes showed a series of dynamic changes with ontogenetic trajectories differing between populations and families, as well as between and within the two major terpene classes. Sesquiterpenes changed rapidly through ontogeny and expressed opposing trajectories between compounds, but showed consistency in pattern between populations. Conversely, changed expression in monoterpene trajectories was population- and compound-specific.Conclusions The results suggest that adaptive opportunities exist for changing levels of terpene content through ontogeny, and evolution may exploit the ontogenetic patterns of change in these compounds to create a diverse ontogenetic chemical mosaic with which to defend the plant. It is hypothesized that the observed genetically based patterns in terpene ontogenetic trajectories reflect multiple changes in the regulation of genes throughout different terpene biosynthetic pathways. The interrelationship of morphogenesis and metabolism is a poorly studied phenomenon. The main paradigm is that development is controlled by gene expression. The aim of the present study was to correlate metabolism to early and late stages of flower and fruit development in order to provide the basis for the identification of metabolic adjustment and limitations., A highly detailed picture of morphogenesis is achieved using nondestructive micro computed tomography. This technique was used to quantify morphometric parameters of early and late flower development in an Arabidopsis thaliana mutant with synchronized flower initiation. The synchronized flower phenotype made it possible to sample enough early floral tissue otherwise not accessible for metabolomic analysis., The integration of metabolomic and morphometric data enabled the correlation of metabolic signatures with the process of flower morphogenesis. These signatures changed significantly during development, indicating a pronounced metabolic reprogramming in the tissue. Distinct sets of metabolites involved in these processes were identified and were linked to the findings of previous gene expression studies of flower development. High correlations with basic leucine zipper ( bZIP) transcription factors and nitrogen metabolism genes involved in the control of metabolic carbon : nitrogen partitioning were revealed., Based on these observations a model for metabolic adjustment during flower development is proposed. Abstract: This study addresses how the human temporal bone develops the population-specific pattern of morphology observed among adults and at what point in ontogeny those patterns arise. Three-dimensional temporal bone shape was captured using 15 landmarks on ontogenetic series of specimens from seven modern human populations. Discriminant function analysis revealed that population-specific temporal bone morphology is evident early in ontogeny, with significant shape differences among many human populations apparent prior to the eruption of the first molar. As early as five years of age, temporal bone shape reflects population history and can be used to reliably sort populations, although those in closer geographic proximity and molecular affinity are more likely to be misclassified. The deviation of cold-adapted populations from this general pattern of congruence between temporal bone morphology and genetic distances, identified in previous work, was confirmed here in adult and subadult specimens, and was revealed to occur earlier in ontogeny than previously recognized. Significant differences exist between the ontogenetic trajectories of some pairs of populations, but not among others, and the angles of these trajectories do not reflect genetic relationships or final adult temporal bone size. Significant intrapopulation differences are evident early in ontogeny, with differences becoming amplified by divergent trajectories in some groups. These findings elucidate how the congruence between adult human temporal bone morphology and population history develops, and reveal that this pattern corresponds closely to that described previously for facial ontogeny. Background and Aims Plant defence metabolites are considered costly due to diversion of energy and nutrients away from growth. These costs combined with changes in resource availability and herbivory throughout plant ontogeny are likely to promote changes in defence metabolites. A comprehensive understanding of plant defence strategy requires measurement of lifetime ontogenetic trajectories – a dynamic component largely overlooked in plant defence theories. This study aimed to compare ontogenetic trajectories of foliar phenolics and terpenoids. Phenolics are predicted to be inexpensive to biosynthesize, whereas expensive terpenoids also require specialized, non-photosynthetic secretory structures to avoid autotoxicity. Based on these predicted costs, it is hypothesized that phenolics would be maximally deployed early in ontogeny, whereas terpenoids would be maximally deployed later, once the costs of biosynthesis and foregone photosynthesis could be overcome by enhanced resource acquisition. Methods Leaves were harvested from a family of glasshouse-grown Eucalyptus froggattii seedlings, field-grown saplings and the maternal parent tree, and analysed for total terpenoids and phenolics. Key Results Foliar phenolics were highest in young seedlings and lowest in the adult tree. Indeed the ratio of total phenolics to total terpenoids decreased in a significantly exponential manner with plant ontogeny. Most individual terpene constituents increased with plant ontogeny, but some mono- and sesquiterpenes remained relatively constant or even decreased in concentration as plants aged. Conclusions Plant ontogeny can influence different foliar defence metabolites in directionally opposite ways, and the contrasting trajectories support our hypothesis that phenolics would be maximally deployed earlier than terpenoids. The results highlight the importance of examining ontogenetic trajectories of defence traits when developing and testing theories of plant defence, and illustrate an advantage of concurrently studying multiple defences. Evolutionary change does not proceed in every direction with equal probability. Evolutionary biases or constraints are limitations on the mode, direction and tempo of evolution. Early tetrapods provide interesting examples, especially Paleozoic and Mesozoic amphibians. (1) Body size had a strong impact on morphology and development in early amphibians, resulting in manifold convergences imposed by design limitations. Miniaturisation had similar effects in a wide range of Paleozoic tetrapods, which are consistent with observations on extant salamanders. Gigantism was a common feature of Triassic temnospondyls, correlating with slow developmental rates similar to those of gigantic salamanders and the convergent evolution of bone density. (2) Ontogeny imposes constraints on evolution by canalised (buffered) developmental sequences. In Paleozoic temnospondyls, ontogenetic trajectories evolved by several different modes (truncation of the trajectory, shifting of events or condensation of events). Metamorphosis is an extreme example of a condensed developmental sequence, which first evolved in Paleozoic temnospondyls, increased in salamanders and culminated in anurans. It imposes strong biases that may be broken by three conceivable modes: (1) loss of the adult period (neoteny), (2) loss of the larval period (direct development) and (3) ‘unpacking’ of metamorphosis by re-evolving the plesiomorphic trajectory. Maternal nest-site choice is a behavioral phenotype with transgenerational consequences that can appear at multiple stages of offspring ontogeny. In many reptiles, the microenvironment surrounding eggs (e.g., moisture) can affect multiple aspects of offspring fitness across several life stages (e.g., embryo survival, phenotypic development, and posthatching survival). Thus, natural selection should favor maternal nesting behaviors that positively affect both embryonic and postembryonic ontogenetic trajectories. We tested this hypothesis in a 2-part laboratory experiment using the brown anole lizard (Anolis sagrei). In the first experiment, gravid lizards were given a choice of nesting substrates containing 5 levels of moisture content. By incubating eggs at the same 5 moisture levels, our second experiment tested if maternal choice of nest substrate facilitates embryonic development and enhances offspring quality and viability. Females strongly preferred nesting substrates with high moisture content, and these conditions yielded high hatching success, large offspring size, and overall increased offspring survival. These results suggest that selection has adaptively matched maternal nesting behaviors, embryonic development, and posthatching phenotypes in ways that enhance both offspring and parental fitness. We cross-sectionally investigated prenatal ontogeny of craniofacial shape in the two subspecies of the Japanese macaque ( Macaca fuscata fuscata and Macaca fuscata yakui) using a geometric morphometric technique to explore the process of morphogenetic divergence leading to the adult morphological difference between the subspecies. The sample comprised a total of 32 formalin-fixed fetal specimens of the two subspecies, in approximately the second and third trimesters. Each fetal cranium was scanned using computed tomography to generate a three-dimensional surface model, and 68 landmarks were digitized on the external and internal surface of each cranium to trace the growth-related changes in craniofacial shape of the two subspecies. The results of our study demonstrated that the two subspecies generally shared the same craniofacial growth pattern. Both crania tend to exhibit relative contraction of the neurocranium in the mediolateral and superoinferior directions, a more superiorly positioned cranial base, a more vertically oriented occipital squama, and a more anteriorly positioned viscerocranium as the cranial size increased. However, distinctive subspecific differences, for example relatively narrower orbital breadth, higher orbit, higher position of the nuchal crest, and more protrudent snout found in Macaca fuscata yakui were already present during the prenatal period. This study demonstrated that morphological differentiation in the craniofacial shape may occur at a very early stage of the fetal period even between closely related subspecies of the Japanese macaque. The evolution of life cycles forms the subject of numerous studies on extant organisms, but is rarely documented in the fossil record. Here, I analyze patterns of development in time-averaged samples of late Carboniferous and early Permian amphibians, and compare them to paleoecological patterns derived from the same deposits located within a large sedimentary basin (Saar-Nahe, Germany). In 300-297 million years (myr) old Sclerocephalus haeuseri (1–1.7 m), adult size, morphology, and the course of ontogeny varied with respect to the habitats in which the species existed. These differences are best exemplified by ontogenetic trajectories, which reveal a full range of modifications correlating with environmental parameters (lake properties, food resources, competitors). In a 2- to 3-myr-long interval, six different lake habitats were inhabited by this species, which responded to changes by modification of growth rate, adult size, developmental sequence, skeletal features, prey preference, and relative degree of terrestriality. Summary: Heterochrony, the classic framework to study ontogeny and phylogeny, in essence relies on a univariate concept of shape. Though principal component plots of multivariate shape data seem to resemble classical bivariate allometric plots, the language of heterochrony cannot be translated directly into general multivariate methodology. We simulate idealized multivariate ontogenetic trajectories and demonstrate their behavior in principal component plots in shape space and in size-shape space. The concept of “dissociation”, which is conventionally regarded as a change in the relationship between shape change and size change, appears to be algebraically the same as regional dissociation — the variation of apparent heterochrony by region. Only if the trajectories of two related species lie along exactly the same path in shape space can the classic terminology of heterochrony apply so that pure dissociation of size change against shape change can be detected. We demonstrate a geometric morphometric approach to these issues using adult and subadult crania of 48 Pan paniscus and 47 P. troglodytes. On each specimen we digitized 47 landmarks and 144 semilandmarks on ridge curves and the external neurocranial surface. The relation between these two species'' growth trajectories is too complex for a simple summary in terms of global heterochrony. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract Variation in neonatal maturity among mammals is often explained by variation in gestation length, but species may also differ in developmental rate, a quantity that is difficult to measure because the conventional formalism makes two important and potentially unrealistic assumptions: (1) ontogeny of form can be described by a single line, and (2) species have the same ontogeny of form. We examine two species, one precocial (Sigmodon fulviventer ), the other altricial (Mus musculus domesticus ), and find that neither assumption is met. Therefore, we introduce an alternative metric, the rate of shape differentiation away from the average neonate. We find that S. fulviventer has a lower developmental rate than M. m. domesticus ; consequently, while more mature at birth, S. fulviventer loses ground to M. m. domesticus over time. Surprisingly, despite differences in gestation length and developmental rate, these species reach developmental and life-history milestones at nearly identical degrees of skull shape maturity. Based on results of the comparison of skull proportions and using available data on phylogeny of barbins we discuss patterns of morphological diversity of the present forms and modes of morphological transformations resulting in their emergence. There is no strict correspondence between distance in a character space and genealogical closeness of forms. Similar forms of barbins independently originated from a generalized form in different sites of Africa and western Asia. Regularity of patterns of morphological diversity is thought to be caused by the ‘channeling’ of morphological transformations. Heterochrony played an important part in evolution of the African ‘large Barbus’ and Varicorhinus. Extraordinary morphological diversity of the African barbins, Lake Tana barbs in particular, is caused mainly by drastic changes in patterns of relative growth late in ontogeny. Cervical vertebral bodies undergo substantial morphological development during the first two decades of life that are used clinically to visually determine skeletal maturation with the cervical vertebral maturation index (CVMI). CVMI defines six stages that capture the morphological transformations from 6 years to 18 years. However, CVMI has poor reproducibility given its qualitative nature and does not account for sexual dimorphism. This study aims to quantify the morphological development of the cervical vertebral bodies C2-C7 in size (height and depth) and shape and examine the emergence of sexual dimorphism. Using 115 (70 M;45F) computed tomography studies from typically developing individuals ages 6 months to 20 years, landmarks were placed at the margins of the C2-C7 cervical vertebral bodies in the midsagittal plane for size and shape analysis. Findings revealed a dichotomy in the growth trends of height versus depth. The C2-C7 growth in depth gained the majority of the adult size by age 5 years, while the C3-C7 growth in height displayed two periods of accelerated growth during early childhood and puberty. Significant sex differences were found in height and depth growth trends and the form-space ontogenetic trajectories during puberty, with minor but evident differences emerging at age 3 years. Female C2-C7 depth measures were smaller than males at all ages. However, sex differences in height became evident due to males continuing to grow after females reach maturity. Ontogenetic allometry is the study of how the size or shape of certain structures changes over the course of an animal’s development. In this study, using Huxley's formula of allometric growth (1932), we assessed the changes in the rate of growth of the feet size of the sigmodontine rodent Oligoryzomys flavescens during its ontogeny and compared differences between males and females. We find evidence of a change of polarity during the ontogenetic development of the species, with the presence of positive allometry during pregnancy and negative allometry in adulthood. Moreover, we note the presence of sexual dimorphism in the size of the feet, in which males of the species have a higher rate of growth than females. This growth pattern is positively related to escape from predators in childhood in both sexes and, in adulthood, provides a higher encounter rate of females by males, due to the larger displacement of the latter. We suggest that both the forces of natural selection and sexual selection have acted to shape the evolution of foot size in this species.

Determining the connection between ontogeny and phylogeny continues to be a major theme in biology. However, few studies have combined dissection of pattern and process that lead to transformation of complex morphological structures. Here we examine the patterns and processes of shape change in a model system-the gastropod radula. This system is a simple one having only two processes: initial secretion and postsecretional movement of teeth. However, it produces a tremendous amount of shape variability and fusion patterns. To determine both pattern and mechanism of shape change in an evolutionary context, we use three complementary approaches and datasets. First, we use a phylogenetic hypothesis to determine the polarity of developmental events. Second, we perform a morphometric analysis of shape change using relative warp analysis that allows us to locate and compare the direction and magnitude of ontogenetic and phylogenetic shape divergence. These comparisons are the basis for testing hyptheses of heterochrony and heterotopy, and we show how our results do not conform to expectations of pure heterochrony. The rejection of heterochrony as a hypothesis is based on empirically demonstrating (1) initial shape differs in each taxon; (2) a single dimension of shape variability does not simultaneously describe ontogenetic and evolutionary shape changes; and (3) a significantly different shape and size covariance between taxa. This rejection is probably based on spatial changes in initial conditions and not spatial changes caused by the process itself. Finally, we construct a mechanistic model that explains how shape change happens based on the sequence of events during ontogeny. By using the parameters in the model as characters in the phylogenetic dataset, we show that different parts of the system have arisen at different times and become co-opted into the process.
