Ontogenetic sexual dimorphism is observed in different primate species, with ecological and evolutionary relationships explaining this pattern. Understanding the growth of the southern brown howler monkey elucidates not only the ecology and evolution but also contributes to conservation projects for this species. Throughout 20 years of the Centro de Pesquisas Biológicas de Indaial—Projeto Bugio, Brazil, we collected morphological data on 105 howlers of the Alouatta guariba species to identify the growth differences between ontogenetic categories and sexes and generate a growth curve to estimate the age of rescued individuals. Linear measurements were employed to obtain body length as well as the dimensions of the head and limbs. All individuals were also weighed to obtain body mass. We assessed growth rate and duration using allometric analysis based on the individuals' ages. We compared growth rate and duration among infant, juvenile, and adult howlers and between sexes. We provide growth curves for body size for both sexes using the Von Bertalanffy model. Infants have accelerated growth rate in comparison to the juveniles and adults, with no differences between sexes in establishing body length at this ontogenetic stage. Males have a prolonged development duration from the juvenile stage, reaching adulthood later than females, which explains the body length differences found in this species. Variables of head and limbs analyzed also showed differences in growth rate and duration, but not so consistently among ontogenetic stages. Mass was not a good variable to understand the growth differences of the animals, since many arrived feeble in the project and may have lost mass due to different circumstances in old age. Therefore, growth curves were obtained only for body length, allowing the estimation of the age of these animals when rescued from the wild to more effectively provide needed care in captivity. Aim: Tirzepatide (Tzp), a novel dual agonist glucose‐dependent insulinotropic polypeptide/glucagon‐like peptide‐1, is approved for treating insulin resistance and obesity, and menopausal women consuming a high‐calorie diet are a target to study the Tzp effect. Therefore, we aimed to allometrically scale body weight (BW) in Tzp‐treated obese diabetic menopausal mice. Materials and Methods: Three‐month‐old C57BL/6 female mice had bilateral ovariectomy (Ovx) or a sham procedure and for 12 weeks were fed a control diet or a high‐fat and high sucrose diet (n = 120/each group [control (C), obese diabetic (Od), Ovx (O), sham (S), Tzp (T)]). Tzp was subcutaneously administered (10 nmol/kg) or vehicle once a day for an additional 4 weeks. The analysis considered log‐transformed data and the allometric equation log y = log a + b log x. Results: Od and OdO showed more upward slopes than C and CO. In C, BW was non‐allometric by T administration. Od and OdO showed slightly positive slopes (more prominent in OdO than Od). OdT and OdOT showed negative slopes, significant intercepts, and more robust Pearson coefficients than untreated ones. A potent drug effect was seen with BW allometric decline. Interactions between diet versus Ovx and diet versus Tzp affected weight gain. Diet versus Ovx versus Tzp affected food intake. Conclusions: A model was developed to show three usual factors observed in mature women. Notably, Tzp improved the metabolism and weight loss of OdO mice. Intraspecific variation in cetacean vertebral anatomy as a result of ageing, growth, and sexual dimorphism is poorly understood. Using 3D geometric morphometrics, we investigated allometric patterns, sexual dimorphism, and ontogenetic trajectories in the vertebral column of false killer whale (Pseudorca crassidens). Our data set includes thoracic, lumbar, and caudal vertebrae of 30 specimens, including neonates, juveniles, and adults of both sexes. Vertebral shape was significantly correlated with size within each region. Neonatal vertebral shape differed significantly from juveniles and adults, displaying ontogenetic shape change. Allometric and growth patterns of the vertebral regions, particularly of the lumbar region with the thoracic and caudal regions, differed significantly, which may influence the function and mobility patterns of the vertebral regions during different life stages. Using quantitative methods, we could not conclude that the Pseudorca vertebrae are sexually dimorphic. This study describes for the first time intraspecific vertebral patterns in a cetacean species across ontogenetic stages. Pseudorca individuals live in large pods and swim together, sharing the same swimming mode. The neonates have a more flexible column and swim less efficiently following their mothers to nurse. The study of how organisms grow is a fundamental aspect of palaeontology. Growth in teleosauroids is poorly understood and little studied, especially in an ontogenetic sense. We investigate growth rates of the most common and abundant teleosauroid, Macrospondylus bollensis, in which a large sample of multiple body sizes is available from the Posidonienschiefer Formation (Posidonia Shale) of southwestern Germany. We perform linear regression analyses on 62 specimens of Macrospondylus (16 juveniles, 7 subadults and 39 adults) using 21 cranial and postcranial measurements. Our results show that juvenile, subadult and adult individuals have near‐isometric or isometric growth throughout much of the body. Notably, we find that in Macrospondylus: (1) the femur grows at a faster rate than the skull and hindlimb zeugopodium; (2) the forelimb and hindlimb grow at the same rate; and (3) there is distinct ontogenetic signal in the growth of the orbit and supratemporal fenestra. We also find that limb scaling in Macrospondylus is somewhat comparable to that seen in the extant gavialids Gavialis gangeticus and Tomistoma schlegelii. Last, we examine evolutionary allometry in skull length relative to body size in Crocodylomorpha using femoral length as a proxy, which shows a near‐isometric trend. Non‐thalattosuchian crocodylomorphs (with the exception of one pholidosaurid and one dryosaurid taxon) are differentiated from thalattosuchians due to their shorter skulls, as previously suggested, but the scaling relationship with femur length remains unchanged. Body shape and metabolic rate can be important determinants of animal performance, yet often their effects on influential traits are evaluated in a non-integrated way. This creates an important gap because the integration between shape and metabolism may be crucial to evaluate metabolic scaling theories. Here, we measured standard metabolic rate in 1- and 2-years old juvenile brown trout Salmo trutta , and used a geometric morphometrics approach to extricate the effects of ontogeny and size on the link between shape and metabolic scaling. We evidenced near-isometric ontogenetic scaling of metabolic rate with size, but also a biphasic pattern driven by a significant change in metabolic scaling, from positive to negative allometry. Moreover, the change in metabolic allometry parallels an ontogenetic change from elongate to deep-bodied shapes. This is consistent with the dynamic energy budget (DEB) and surface area (SA) theories, but not with the resource transport network theory which predicts increasing allometric exponents for trends towards more robust, three-dimensional bodies. In addition, we found a relationship between body shape and size independent metabolic rate, with a positive correlation between robustness and metabolic rate, which fits well within the view of Pace-of-Life Syndromes (POLS). Finally, our results align with previous studies that question the universality of metabolic scaling exponents and propose other mechanistic models explaining the diversity of metabolic scaling relationships or emphasizing the potential contribution of ecological factors. The ontogenetic progression of insect larval head size has received much attention due to its fundamental and practical importance. However, although previous studies have analyzed the population mean head size, such an approach may not be appropriate for developmental studies of larval head sizes when the trajectory of individual head size growth is correlated with pre-molt head size and developmental stage. Additionally, there is covariation between the head and body sizes; however, few studies have compared the ontogenetic progression of individual head sizes with that of individual body sizes. In this investigation, the per-stage growth rates (PSGRs) for head width (HW) and cubic-rooted body mass at the beginning of each instar (body size, BS) were assessed in Trypoxylus dichotomus. Linear models were used to test the size- and instar-dependence of the ontogenetic progression of individual HW and BS. The individual PSGRs of the HW (iPSGRH) and BS (iPSGRB) were then compared. In addition, the allometric relationship between HW and BS was examined. The iPSGRH was negatively correlated with the pre-molt HW at every instar (i.e., head catch-up growth). Furthermore, the mean iPSGRH at L2 was relatively higher than that at L1 when the pre-molt HW was used as covariate in the analysis (i.e., instar-effect), whereas the mean iPSGRH decreased ontogenetically. The iPSGRB showed catch-up growth and instar-effects similar to those of iPSGRH; however, iPSGRH was found to be lower than iPSGRB. In humans, obstetrical difficulties arise from the large head and broad shoulders of the neonate relative to the maternal birth canal. Various characteristics of human cranial development, such as the relatively small head of neonates compared with adults and the delayed fusion of the metopic suture, have been suggested to reflect developmental adaptations to obstetrical constraints. On the other hand, it remains unknown whether the shoulders of humans also exhibit developmental features reflecting obstetrical adaptation. Here we address this question by tracking the development of shoulder width from fetal to adult stages in humans, chimpanzees, and Japanese macaques. Compared with nonhuman primates, shoulder development in humans follows a different trajectory, exhibiting reduced growth relative to trunk length before birth and enhanced growth after birth. This indicates that the perinatal developmental characteristics of the shoulders likely evolved to ease obstetrical difficulties such as shoulder dystocia in humans. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Brain size varies dramatically, both within and across species, and this variation is often believed to be the result of trade‐offs between the cognitive benefits of having a large brain for a given body size and the energetic cost of sustaining neural tissue. One potential consequence of having a large brain is that organisms must also meet the associated high energetic demands. Thus, a key question is whether metabolic rate correlates with brain size. However, using metabolic rate to measure energetic demand yields a relatively instantaneous and dynamic measure of energy turnover, which is incompatible with the longer evolutionary timescale of changes in brain size within and across species. Morphological traits associated with oxygen consumption, specifically gill surface area, have been shown to be correlates of oxygen demand and energy use, and thus may serve as integrated correlates of these processes, allowing us to assess whether evolutionary changes in brain size correlate with changes in longer‐term oxygen demand and energy use. We tested how brain size relates to gill surface area in the blacktip shark Carcharhinus limbatus. First, we examined whether the allometric slope of brain mass (i.e., the rate that brain mass changes with body mass) is lower than the allometric slope of gill surface area across ontogeny. Second, we tested whether gill surface area explains variation in brain mass, after accounting for the effects of body mass on brain mass. We found that brain mass and gill surface area both had positive allometric slopes, with larger individuals having both larger brains and larger gill surface areas compared to smaller individuals. However, the allometric slope of brain mass was lower than the allometric slope of gill surface area, consistent with our prediction that the allometric slope of gill surface area could pose an upper limit to the allometric slope of brain mass. Finally, after accounting for body mass, individuals with larger brains tended to have larger gill surface areas. Together, our results provide clues as to how fishes may evolve and maintain large brains despite their high energetic cost, suggesting that C. limbatus individuals with a large gill surface area for their body mass may be able to support a higher energetic turnover, and, in turn, a larger brain for their body mass. By adopting a longitudinal study design and through geometric morphometrics methods, we investigated individual and ontogenetic variation in size, shape and timing during larval development of the cabbage butterfly Pieris brassicae under laboratory conditions. We found that ontogenetic size progression departs modestly, but significantly, from growth at a constant rate and that size at hatching contributes considerably to determine the size of the individual at all subsequent stages. As for the shape, ontogenetic allometry is much more conspicuous than static allometry, the latter in many cases being close to isometry. Analysis of developmental timing revealed a stage of apparently more effective developmental control at stage 3, supported by both the relatively small variance in cumulative developmental time up to stage 3 and by the pattern of correlation between duration of single stages. While presenting detailed quantitative aspects of growth in P. brassicae, in particular with respect to individual variation, this study and the associated dataset can provide a basis for further explorations of the post‐embryonic development in this insect and contribute to the ongoing investigations on growth regulation and control in insects. The fore‐ and hindlimbs of birds are specialized to perform different functions. The growth patterns of limb bones and their relationship with the ontogeny of locomotion are critical to our understanding of variation in morphological, physiological and life‐history traits within and among species. Unfortunately, the ontogenetic development of limb bones has not been well explored, especially in altricial birds. In this study, we sampled the entire measurements of the pigeon (Columba livia) of individual skeletons, to investigate the ontogenetic allometry of limb bones by reduced major axis regression. The ulna and humerus were found to be positively allometric in relation to body mass, with the ulna growing more rapidly than the humerus. Together with previous data, this suggests that strong positive allometric growth in forelimb bones could be a common trend among diverse Carinatae groups. Hindlimb was dominated by positive allometry, but was variable in the growth of the tarsometatarsus which included three allometric patterns. A greater dorsoventral diameter in the midsection of the humerus and ulna confers superior bending resistance and is ideal for flapping/gliding flight. Shape variation in the midsection of different hindlimb components reflects different mechanical loading, and the markedly inverse trend between the tibiotarsus and tarsometatarsus before 28 days of age also suggests loading change before fledging. Before fledging, the growth of the leg bones was prior to that of the wing bones. This kind of asynchronous development of the fore‐ and hindlimbs was associated with the establishment and improvement of different functions, and with shifts in the importance of different functions over time. Several investigations in recent years have reported patterns of discontinuous, biphasic, loglinear variation in the metabolic allometry of aquatic animals. These putative shifts in pattern of allometry have been attributed to changes in the primary site for gas exchange from cutaneous to branchial as animals undergo ontogenetic changes in size, shape, and surface area. Because of the important implications of the earlier research with regard to both physiology and evolution, I re-examined data that purportedly support claims of discontinuous, biphasic allometry in oxygen consumption versus body size of American eels (Anguilla rostrata) and spiny lobsters (Sagmariasus verreauxi). I used ANCOVA to fit three different statistical models to each set of logarithmic transformations and then assessed the fits by Akaike's Information Criterion. The observations for both species were described better by a single straight line fitted to the full distribution than by a biphasic model. The concept of biphasic, loglinear growth of the vertebrate brain is based on graphical displays of logarithmic transformations of the original measurements. Such displays commonly give the appearance of two distinct mathematical distributions – one set of observations following a steep trajectory at the low end of the size range and another set following a shallow trajectory at the high end. However, the appearance of two distributions is an artefact resulting from the logarithmic transformations. Observations of brain mass vs. body mass in each of the eight vertebrate species examined in the current investigation conform to a single mathematical distribution that is well described by a single equation fitted to the original, untransformed data by non-linear regression. Data for carp, chickens, kangaroos and rabbits are described by three-parameter power equations whereas those for dolphins and primates are described by exponential functions that rise rapidly to a maximum. The brain continues to grow throughout life in carp, chickens, kangaroos and rabbits but not in dolphins and primates. Future investigations of relative growth of the brain should be based on graphical and analytical study of observations expressed on the native mathematical scale. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

1. Larvae of tortoise beetles present exaggerated body parts in association with an abdominal shield, which is made of faeces and exuviae that are deposited on the urogomphi throughout ontogeny. Growth trajectories and scaling relationships of these functional structures associated with the shield, if any, are unknown. 2. This study of Gratiana spadicea first tested, under field conditions, whether there is adaptive value associated with the shield regarding protection against predation and sunlight. Then, under laboratory conditions, the growth trajectory and allometric relationships among body parts were investigated, including scoli, individual and apparent furcae, and shield. The influence of food deprivation on the development of these structures was also determined. 3. Findings from previous studies were confirmed, suggesting that the adaptive value assigned to the shield is related to protection against predators. The present study demonstrated for the first time that the shield acts as a parasol in cassidines, decreasing the exposure of their larval body to sunlight. The scoli and apparent furca are exaggerated structures of G. spadicea, the development of which involves allometric growth and greater energetic investment (positive allometry) during ontogeny. There was proportionally less energetic investment for somatic construction of individual furca (negative allometry) due to the accumulation of the exuviae. 4. Snakes exhibit a diverse array of body shapes despite their characteristically simplified morphology. The most extreme shape changes along the precloacal axis are seen in fully aquatic sea snakes (Hydrophiinae): "microcephalic" sea snakes have tiny heads and dramatically reduced forebody girths that can be less than a third of the hindbody girth. This morphology has evolved repeatedly in sea snakes that specialize in hunting eels in burrows, but its developmental basis has not previously been examined. Here, we infer the developmental mechanisms underlying body shape changes in sea snakes by examining evolutionary patterns of changes in vertebral number and postnatal ontogenetic growth. Our results show that microcephalic species develop their characteristic shape via changes in both the embryonic and postnatal stages. Ontogenetic changes cause the hindbodies of microcephalic species to reach greater sizes relative to their forebodies in adulthood, suggesting heterochronic shifts that may be linked to homeotic effects (axial regionalization). However, microcephalic species also have greater numbers of vertebrae, especially in their forebodies, indicating that somitogenetic effects also contribute to evolutionary changes in body shape. Several small-scale populations exhibited phenotypic plasticity whereby growth spurt of body height occurred much earlier than age at menarche and this was not followed by same early spurt of body weight. This leads to question whether growth trajectory of stature follow the same growth trajectory of body mass and whether the trajectory itself is associated to sexual maturity. We evaluated developmental plasticity observed in Baduy girl, a traditional population in Indonesia, in facing strenuous environmental and biocultural conditions. We measured stature and body mass cross-sectionally. We determined age at menarche as population average of age of girls that had already got their first menstruation. Growths of body fat and weight followed a same mode and timing and their spurts pivoted on the age at menarche. In contrast, growth spurt of body height occurred four years earlier than menarche and velocity curve of body linearity progressed in opposite direction to that of body ponderality. The prevailing poor nutrition and high physical activity elicited principle of ontogenetic allometry to synchronize the acceleration and deceleration of growths in body linearity and ponderality whereby growth in body height functions to reach the body size target and to provide skeletal framework for development of body mass. The biocultural conditions lead to slow bodily growth rate with low spurt resulting in the characteristics of Baduy girl that was small in size and late in both sexual maturity and full-grown ages.

1. Body size influences the way that organisms both perform their locomotor activities and perceive their environment. Allometry of insect legs with respect to body size is affected by many factors such as ontogenetic constraints and natural selection. Negative allometry, positive allometry, or isometry could result from different mechanisms influencing leg length and locomotion performance. 2. We tested three main models of hind femur length allometry (natural selection for jumping performance, ontogenetic constraint, and the size-grain model) in Orthoptera, a Polyneopteran order with large size range and high habitat and lifestyle diversification. We used a data set of 1549 species including members of both suborders, Ensifera and Caelifera, and many representative families using a Linear Mixed Model approach, and Reduced Major Axis and Ordinary Least Squares regression to explore evolutionary interspecific allometry in this order. 3. Our results showed a generalized trend of negative allometry (leg length decreases with body size increase) at the ordinal, subordinal, and familial levels, contrary to the expectations of the size-grain model and supporting our main hypothesis of a common ancestral developmental pattern regulating leg negative allometry in Orthoptera. 4. The conservation of a common hind leg allometric pattern in Orthoptera provides a basic framework to study adaptation of hind limbs to different habitats and lifestyles, and has important implications for the analysis of ecogeographic and evolutionary rules. Abstract: Objectives: The arrival of the Huns into Europe in the fourth century AD increased the occurrence of intentional cranial modification among European nomads. It has been postulated that the Huns used a two‐bandage cranial binding technique to differentiate themselves from surrounding nomadic groups, including those from Georgia. This study examines this hypothesis by comparing Migration Period (4th to 7th century AD) juvenile crania, which retain strong impressions of bindings, with adult modified crania from Hungary and Georgia. Materials and Methods: Twelve surface landmarks and 251 semi‐landmarks were used to study ontogenetic trajectories in 9 juvenile and 16 adult modified skulls from 8 Hungarian sites and 21 adult skulls from two Georgian sites. Generalized Procrustes analysis, linear regression of Procrutes distance on dental age and log centroid size, and warping the principal components (PCs) in shape space helped to identify cranial shape changes. Results: The PCs provide significant separation of the juvenile and adult groups from Georgia and Hungary. Variation in modified cranial shape was limited in Hungary compared to Georgia. There was stronger correlation between juvenile and adult modified cranial shape in Hungary than in Georgia. Warping along the first axis reveals the trajectory from marked flattening of the frontal and occipital regions in juveniles to diminished flattening in the same regions in adult crania, corresponding with one binding. Another depression extending from the post‐bregmatic region to the temporal region, similarly strong in juveniles but diminishing in adults, marks the second binding. Discussion: Hungarian crania were modified with two bindings with limited shape variation, whereas the Georgian crania had greater variation in shape being also modified with antero‐posterior bindings. The findings from this study alongside contemporary historical sources help to understand the role of intentional cranial modification as a mark of social identity among nomads in the Migration Period of Europe. Ontogenetic allometry, how species change with size through their lives, and heterochony, a decoupling between shape, size, and age, are major contributors to biological diversity. However, macroevolutionary allometric and heterochronic trends remain poorly understood because previous studies have focused on small groups of closely related species. Here, we focus on testing hypotheses about the evolution of allometry and how allometry and heterochrony drive morphological diversification at the level of an entire species-rich and diverse clade. Pythons are a useful system due to their remarkably diverse and well-adapted phenotypes and extreme size disparity. We collected detailed phenotype data on 40 of the 44 species of python from 1191 specimens. We used a suite of analyses to test for shifts in allometric trajectories that modify morphological diversity. Heterochrony is the main driver of initial divergence within python clades, and shifts in the slopes of allometric trajectories make exploration of novel phenotypes possible later in divergence history. We found that allometric coefficients are highly evolvable and there is an association between ontogenetic allometry and ecology, suggesting that allometry is both labile and adaptive rather than a constraint on possible phenotypes. Characterizing the factors that shape variation in brain size in natural populations is crucial to understanding the evolution of brain size in animals. Here, we explore how relative brain size and brain allometry vary with drainage, predation risk and sex in natural populations of the electric knifefish Brachyhypopomus occidentalis. Fish were sampled from high and low predation risk sites within two independent river drainages in eastern and central Panamá. Overall, we observed low variation in brain-body size allometric slopes associated with drainage, predation risk and sex category. However, we observed significant differences in allometric intercepts between predation risk sites. We also found significant differences in relative brain mass associated with drainage, as well as significant differences in absolute brain mass associated with drainage, predation risk and sex category. Our results suggest potential constraints in brain-body allometry across populations of B. occidentalis. However, both drainage and predation risk may be playing a role in brain mass variation among populations. The ontogenetic progression of insect larval head size has received much attention due to its fundamental and practical importance. However, although previous studies have analyzed the population mean head size, such an approach may not be appropriate for developmental studies of larval head sizes when the trajectory of individual head size growth is correlated with pre-molt head size and developmental stage. Additionally, there is covariation between the head and body sizes; however, few studies have compared the ontogenetic progression of individual head sizes with that of individual body sizes. In this investigation, the per-stage growth rates (PSGRs) for head width (HW) and cubic-rooted body mass at the beginning of each instar (body size, BS) were assessed in Trypoxylus dichotomus . Linear models were used to test the size- and instar-dependence of the ontogenetic progression of individual HW and BS. The individual PSGRs of the HW (iPSGR H ) and BS (iPSGR B ) were then compared. In addition, the allometric relationship between HW and BS was examined. The iPSGR H was negatively correlated with the pre-molt HW at every instar ( i.e ., head catch-up growth). Furthermore, the mean iPSGR H at L2 was relatively higher than that at L1 when the pre-molt HW was used as covariate in the analysis ( i.e ., instar-effect), whereas the mean iPSGR H decreased ontogenetically. The iPSGR B showed catch-up growth and instar-effects similar to those of iPSGR H ; however, iPSGR H was found to be lower than iPSGR B . Changes in body size over ontogeny may influence the ontogenetic development of long bones, and thus important to our understanding of variation in morphological, physiological, and life-history traits within species. In this study, we sample the entire measurements of the Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) of individual skeletons, to investigate the ontogenetic allometry of limb bone proportions by Reduced Major Axis (RMA) regression. The ulna and humerus were both positively allometric in relation to body mass, with their proximal ends growth more rapidly than other regions. Hindlimb bones exhibited more than one allometric pattern. The tarsometatarsus was negative; the femur presented positive allometry, with the width and depth of the proximal end scaled more strongly; measurements of the tibiotarsus were dominated by more rapid growth, especially the width of the proximal end. Integrating studies of ontogeny with analyses of disparity can reveal important and surprising insights into the origins of disparity and why it varies among groups. One such potentially surprising insight is that disparity could be constant over ontogeny even though species differ in both rates and timings of development and in their ontogenetic changes in shape. Several studies of both primates and rodents have concluded that disparity is generated prenatally although some have concluded that it arises postnatally. However, neither constancy nor an ontogenetic increase in disparity has been ever been rigorously documented for either primates or rodents. For a small sample of rodents, we show that species differ in their postnatal ontogenies but infants are neither more nor less disparate than adults and the major dimensions of disparity distinguishing the main clades also do not change. The constancy in both the level of disparity and its main dimensions does not result primarily from the subtlety of postnatal differences. Those differences are indeed subtle but the disparity in directions of ontogenetic shape change is nonetheless sufficient to increase shape disparity significantly. Disparity does not increase postnatally primarily because ontogenies are not strictly linear; disparity generated postnatally counteracts that produced earlier. What limits the progressive accumulation of disparity is the curvature of ontogenetic trajectories, a curvature presumably due to ontogenetic changes in the spatial distribution of rates of bone deposition and resorption. We studied the ontogenetic allometry pattern in the freshwater brachyuran crab Potamon fluviatile (Herbst, 1785) to describe some new sexual dimorphic features on the ontogenic trajectories of the chelae. We surveyed carapace width, chela length and width, dactylus length, and propodus length of both chelae of 93 females and 114 males to the nearest 0.05 mm using a vernier caliper. Our main result was the identification of morphological biometry showing a variability of the chela linked to growth allometry, with some different between-sex ontogenic trajectories. Specifically, we emphasized how the morphometric features of the chelae change during body-size growth with different increasing rates. Particularly, the observed significant shape changes are mainly due to positive allometries in both sexes, although negative allometries (the latter visible only in the propodus length of females) and isometries were observed as well. Our study confirms that a form of sexual dimorphism exists in the ontogenetic allometric trajectories of P. fluviatile in both the large and small chelae, these trajectories being related to mechanical aspects in predation, food manipulation, mate acquisition, and between-sex differences in aggressiveness during antagonistic fights. • Background and aims Phenotypic diversification of flowers is frequently attributed to selection by different functional groups of pollinators. During optimization of floral phenotype, developmental robustness to genetic and non-genetic perturbations is expected to limit the phenotypic space available for future evolutionary changes. Although adaptive divergence can occur without altering the basic developmental programme of the flower (ontogenetic scaling hypothesis), the rarity of reversion to ancestral states following adaptive radiations of pollination syndromes suggests that changes in the ancestral developmental programme of the flower are common during such evolutionary transitions. Evidence suggests that flower diversification into different pollination syndromes in the Loasoideae genus Caiophora took place during a recent adaptive radiation in the central Andes. This involved transitions from bee to hummingbird and small rodent pollination. The aim of this work was to examine if the adaptive radiation of pollination syndromes in Caiophora occurred through ontogenetic scaling or involved a departure from the ontogenetic pattern basal to this genus. • Methods We used geometric morphometric variables to describe the shape and size of floral structures taking part in the pollination mechanism of Loasoideae. This approach was used to characterize the developmental trajectories of three species basal to the genus Caiophora through shape-size relationships (ontogenetic allometry). We then tested if the shape-size combinations of these structures in mature flowers of derived Caiophora species fall within the phenotypic space predicted by the development of basal species. • Key Results Variation in the size and shape of Caiophora flowers does not overlap with the pattern of ontogenetic allometry of basal species. Derived bee-, hummingbird- and rodent-pollinated species had divergent ontogenetic patterns of floral development from that observed for basal bee-pollinated species. • Conclusions The adaptive radiation of Caiophora involved significant changes in the developmental pattern of the flowers, rejecting the ontogenetic scaling hypothesis. ABSTRACT Objectives Regional differences in modern human facial features are present at birth, and ontogenetic allometry contributes to variation in adults. However, details regarding differential rates of growth and timing among regional groups are lacking. We explore ontogenetic and static allometry in a cross-sectional sample spanning Africa, Europe and North America, and evaluate tempo and mode in two regional groups with very different adult facial morphology, the Khoisan and Inuit. Materials and Methods Semilandmark geometric morphometric methods, multivariate statistics and growth simulations were used to quantify and compare patterns of facial growth and development. Results Regional-specific facial morphology develops early in ontogeny. The Inuit has the most distinct morphology and exhibits heterochronic differences in development compared to other regional groups. Allometric patterns differ during early postnatal development, when significant increases in size are coupled with large amounts of shape changes. All regional groups share a common adult static allometric trajectory, which can be attributed to sexual dimorphism, and the corresponding allometric shape changes resemble developmental patterns during later ontogeny. Discussion The amount and pattern of growth and development may not be shared between regional groups, indicating that a certain degree of flexibility is allowed for in order to achieve adult size. In early postnatal development the face is less constrained compared to other parts of the cranium allowing for greater evolvability. The early development of region-specific facial features combined with heterochronic differences in timing or rate of growth, reflected in differences in facial size, suggest different patterns of postnatal growth. Morphological traits often covary within and among species according to simple power laws referred to as allometry. Such allometric relationships may result from common growth regulation, and this has given rise to the hypothesis that allometric exponents may have low evolvability and constrain trait evolution. We formalize hypotheses for how allometry may constrain morphological trait evolution across taxa, and test these using more than 300 empirical estimates of static (within-species) allometric relations of animal morphological traits. Although we find evidence for evolutionary changes in allometric parameters on million-year, cross-species time scales, there is limited evidence for microevolutionary changes in allometric slopes. Accordingly, we find that static allometries often predict evolutionary allometries on the subspecies level, but less so across species. Although there is a large body of work on allometry in a broad sense that includes all kinds of morphological trait-size relationships, we found relatively little information about the evolution of allometry in the narrow sense of a power relationship. Despite the many claims of microevolutionary changes of static allometries in the literature, hardly any of these apply to narrow-sense allometry, and we argue that the hypothesis of strongly constrained static allometric slopes remains viable. Mandibular morphology is determined not only by dietary habits, but also by sexual selection and allometry in primates. It is well-known that African papionins show intra- and interspecific variations through varied extensions of a common ontogenetic allometric trajectory in the face. Here, we used geometric morphometrics to compare the ontogenetic trajectories of large-bodied Japanese macaques and small-bodied long-tailed macaques in the sister clade of African papionins. The two species showed a major common allometric trend that was comparable to that of African papionins, but the allometric trajectory was transposed parallel to each other with few interspecies differences in mandibular shape. A minor allometric trend occurred before the eruption of the first molar. During extensino of this allometric trend in Japanese macaques, mandibular shape becomes mechanically suitable for processing tough food items in their dietary repertoire in winter. The decoupling of size and shape in the major allometric trend can allow for adaptive modifications in mandibular shape, which in turn may play a central role in speciation in macaques. Compared to other African papionins, macaques are widely distributed in temperate areas and have survived in fluctuating climates and habitats. In sexual dimorphism, males often exhibit exaggerated characters as weapons or ornaments. Among the numerous amphipod species (Amphipoda, Crustacea) showing sexual dimorphism, caprellids (Caprellidae) are characterized by considerably larger males that possess weapons, although the developmental processes underlying these sex-related differences are largely unknown. Therefore, to clarify the process of sexual differentiation during postembryonic development in caprellids, morphometric analyses of Caprella scaura were conducted. Principal component analysis using 31 morphometric traits showed drastic allometric changes occurring at two ontogenetic body length (BL) points (i.e., 3.8 and 8.8 mm). In individuals larger than 3 mm, head spines appeared in both sexes, and penises did only in males, allowing the discrimination of juveniles from larvae. Moreover, in larger males (BL > 8.8 mm), traits used in reproductive behavior, i.e., the first antenna, second gnathopod, and first to fifth pereonites, were extremely exaggerated. Observations of pre-copulatory behavior along with morphological assays revealed that sexually mature males could be identified by the size ratio between the triangular projection and palmar spine on the propodus of the second gnathopod. In contrast, female maturation could be determined by the marginal setae of oostegites forming a brood pouch. The body size distribution of sexually mature females was concentrated within a narrow range of BLs (6-9 mm), whereas that of sexually mature males showed a broader range (BL 9-18 mm), suggesting that, in C. scaura , males continue to molt and grow even after sexual maturation via indeterminate growth, to increase their lifetime reproductive success.

Evolutionary developmental biology is quickly transforming our understanding of how lineages evolve through the modification of ontogenetic processes. Yet, while great strides have been made in the study of neontological forms, it is much more difficult to apply the principles of evo-devo to the miserly fossil record. Because fossils are static entities, we as researchers can only infer evolution and development by drawing connections between them. The choices of how we join specimens together-juveniles to adults to study ontogeny, taxon to taxon to study evolution-can dramatically affect our results. Here, I examine paedomorphism in the fossil hominin species Australopithecus africanus. Using extant African apes as proxies for ancestral hominin morphology, I demonstrate that Sts 71 is most similar to a sub-adult African ape, suggesting that A. africanus is paedomorphic relative to the presumed ancestral form. I then plot ontogenetic size and shape in extant great apes, humans, and A. africanus in order to assess patterns of ontogenetic allometry. Results indicate that ontogenetic allometry in A. africanus, subsequent to M1 occlusion is similar to that in modern humans and bonobos; gorillas, chimpanzees, and orangutans share a different pattern of size-shape relationship. Combined with results from the analysis of paedomorphism plus knowledge about the developmental chronologies of this group, these findings suggest that paedomorphism in A. africanus arises relatively early in ontogeny. The bluemouth, Helicolenus dactylopterus, is a deep-sea scorpionfish widely distributed in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean. It is a common by-catch associated to many demersal fisheries. However, there is little information about the stock structure, stock dynamics and life history parameters of the bluemouth. From the perspective of stock identification, it is important to study growth in fish populations to better understand the possible morphological differences among populations and when and why do they arise. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the growth (allometric) trajectories of shape for several bluemouth populations in Northeast Atlantic and Mediterranean using landmark-based geometric morphometric techniques. In this study, ontogenetic allometry was present in all of the bluemouth samples. Ontogenetic shape changes were most evident in the head and pectoral area, affecting the position of the snout, preopercular spines and pectoral fins, but changes in body depth and length were also important. However, the degree to which these ontogenetic shape changes were present in bluemouth from each of the studied areas was different, indicating that their growth trajectories are not homogeneous. The relationship between prenatal and postnatal ontogenetic allometry is poorly known, and empirical studies documenting prenatal allometry are few, precluding an understanding of changes in growth patterns during life history and their relation to proximal, physiological, and ultimate evolutionary variables. In this study I compare prenatal and postnatal ontogenetic allometry of the cranium in a cleared and stained developmental series of the African striped mouse (Rhabdomys pumilio). Eighteen cranial measurements, reflecting the dimensions of individual elements, were analyzed using bivariate and multivariate estimates of allometry and methods of matrix comparison. Prenatal allometry is characterized in R. pumilio by a relative rapid lengthening of cranial elements, particularly the frontal, parietal, basisphenoid, premaxilla, and palatine, as evidenced by larger bivariate allometric coefficients (>30% increase) and, across all variables measured, a greater proportion of cranial elements growing with a positive allometry than in the postnatal period. Growth dynamics are found to shift for measurements of several elements including the parietal, frontal, and palatine, indicating a nonlinearity of ontogenetic allometry with respect to birth; similar shifts have been found between prenatal and postnatal growth for some regions of the human cranium. Application of common principal component analyses, a generalized extension of principal component analysis, revealed that the prenatal and postnatal matrices shared a highly similar structure, further quantified by high correlations (>0.78) using the random skewers method of matrix comparison. Changes of external morphological characters in three forms (morphotypes) of African barbs from Lake Tana (Ethiopia) belonging to Barbus intermedius complex were traced using electronic tags. It was shown that within age interval from two to four years individual ontogenetic allometric curves often cannot be described with a single power function equation. Individual ontogenetic trajectories in the principal components space within this interval strongly differ in shape meandering within ontogenetic channels outlined on the basis of cross-sectional data. Recent palaeoatmospheric models suggest large-scale fluctuations in ambient oxygen level over the past 550 million years. To better understand how global hypoxia and hyperoxia might have affected the growth and physiology of contemporary vertebrates, we incubated eggs and raised hatchlings of the American alligator. Crocodilians are one of few vertebrate taxa that survived these global changes with distinctly conservative morphology. We maintained animals at 30°C under chronic hypoxia (12% O2), normoxia (21% O2) or hyperoxia (30% O2). At hatching, hypoxic animals were significantly smaller than their normoxic and hyperoxic siblings. Over the course of 3 months, post-hatching growth was fastest under hyperoxia and slowest under hypoxia. Hypoxia, but not hyperoxia, caused distinct scaling of major visceral organs - reduction of liver mass, enlargement of the heart and accelerated growth of lungs. When absorptive and post-absorptive metabolic rates were measured in juvenile alligators, the increase in oxygen consumption rate due to digestion/absorption of food was greatest in hyperoxic alligators and smallest in hypoxic ones. Hyperoxic alligators exhibited the lowest breathing rate and highest oxygen consumption per breath. We suggest that, despite compensatory cardiopulmonary remodelling, growth of hypoxic alligators is constrained by low atmospheric oxygen supply, which may limit their food utilisation capacity. Conversely, the combination of elevated metabolism and low cost of breathing in hyperoxic alligators allows for a greater proportion of metabolised energy to be available for growth. The Palaearctic genus Arvicola includes two species: the south-western water vole A. sapidus, and the northern water vole A. terrestris. The latter has semiaquatic and/or subterranean populations, while populations of A. sapidus are always semiaquatic. According to the current phylogenetic and palaeontological data, adaptation to semiaquatic life is plesiomorphic for the genus Arvicola. We studied the ontogenetic allometry of skull and long bones of the semiaquatic A. sapidus, a semiaquatic population of A. terrestris ( A. t. italicus), and two fossorial populations of A. terrestris ( A. t. scherman and A. t. monticola). Animals from fossorial populations were smaller than were those from semiaquatic populations. We found that most of the ontogenetic allometric exponents of characters linked to digging in the skull and in the long bones were significantly higher in A. t. monticola, a fossorial clade, than they were in the semiaquatic populations. On the other hand, there may have been an evolutionary lag between invasion of the hypogeic habitat and the acquisition of fossorial adaptations in A. t. scherman. We showed statistically that the morphological differences linked to the invasion of a hypogeic habitat are already present in juvenile animals and, according to these results, suggest that these morphological differences are the direct expression of genetic changes rather than the outcome of epigenetic factors of mechanical origin. Moreover, we tried to ascertain whether the apomorphic shape of the skull and long bones in the fossorial populations of A. terrestris (compared with the primitive condition that would have been retained by the semiaquatic A. sapidus) are the outcome of a heterochronic process. Optimization by squared change parsimony supported the hypothesis of an apomorphic reduction of body size linked to the invasion of the subterranean habitat. The comparison of the ontogenetic trajectories of both skull shape and long bone shape suggested that a heterochronic process was involved in this morphological transformation. Body shape and metabolic rate can be important determinants of animal performance, yet often their effects on influential traits are evaluated in a non-integrated way. This creates an important gap because the integration between shape and metabolism may be crucial to evaluate metabolic scaling theories. Here, we measured standard metabolic rate in 1- and 2-years old juvenile brown trout Salmo trutta , and used a geometric morphometrics approach to extricate the effects of ontogeny and size on the link between shape and metabolic scaling. We evidenced near-isometric ontogenetic scaling of metabolic rate with size, but also a biphasic pattern driven by a significant change in metabolic scaling, from positive to negative allometry. Moreover, the change in metabolic allometry parallels an ontogenetic change from elongate to deep-bodied shapes. This is consistent with the dynamic energy budget (DEB) and surface area (SA) theories, but not with the resource transport network theory which predicts increasing allometric exponents for trends towards more robust, three-dimensional bodies. In addition, we found a relationship between body shape and size independent metabolic rate, with a positive correlation between robustness and metabolic rate, which fits well within the view of Pace-of-Life Syndromes (POLS). In humans, obstetrical difficulties arise from the large head and broad shoulders of the neonate relative to the maternal birth canal. Various characteristics of human cranial development, such as the relatively small head of neonates compared with adults and the delayed fusion of the metopic suture, have been suggested to reflect developmental adaptations to obstetrical constraints. On the other hand, it remains unknown whether the shoulders of humans also exhibit developmental features reflecting obstetrical adaptation. Here we address this question by tracking the development of shoulder width from fetal to adult stages in humans, chimpanzees, and Japanese macaques. Compared with nonhuman primates, shoulder development in humans follows a different trajectory, exhibiting reduced growth relative to trunk length before birth and enhanced growth after birth. This indicates that the perinatal developmental characteristics of the shoulders likely evolved to ease obstetrical difficulties such as shoulder dystocia in humans.

To avoid misinterpretation of allometric exponents determined from interspecific allometric comparisons, specific conditions must be met with respect to the common reference variable. Body weight is considered to be the best general indication of overall size and is hence widely acknowledged to be the most suitable reference variable. However, because of the paucity of recorded body weights for museum specimens, various comparative studies have used other size indicators as intervening variables, although the allometric relationships to body size/weight were often unknown and possibly differed between species. Because of differences in the scaling properties of alternative intervening variables across the species investigated, conflicting conclusions may be drawn if different variables are chosen as substitutes for overall size. This is illustrated with two examples. In this study, series of skeletons with associated body weights of Gorilla, Pan, Pongo, and Homo were investigated. Both ontogenetic and static adult allometric relationships between several widely used reference variables and body weight were determined. Neither these variables nor additional estimators investigated in this study displayed allometric exponents and coefficients similar enough across species to justify direct interspecific comparison. To generate an alternative size estimator for both ontogenetic and static interspecific investigations, equations for combined sexes were derived to predict body weight from various long bone dimensions for individual hominoid species. From a total of 25 predictors, 12 prediction equations per species (six for nonadults and six for adults) were selected according to their relative suitability for reliable prediction of body weight.
