In this article, a detailed analysis, design, and experimental evaluation of a continuous-conduction-mode, pulsewidth modulated, boost-type active soft-switching cell suitable for 1-ph/3-ph universal input voltage power factor correction (PFC) rectifier for on-board charging applications is introduced. The soft-switching cell features zero-voltage switching and simple control. The evaluation of the concept was performed on a 1-ph/3-ph combo 7.2-kW/12.5-kW prototype designed to operate at 230 VRMS 1–ph and 480 VRMS 3-ph line input and deliver 650–750 V output. At full load and 150 kHz switching frequency, the prototype achieves 98.8% efficiency in 3-ph operation and 98% efficiency in 1-ph interleaved operation. The soft-switching PFC concept naturally morphs between an interleaved totem-pole converter for 1-ph ac line voltage and a 3-ph converter for 3-ph ac line voltage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In view of problems of low power quality, low cruising power, short service life of battery, separation between battery charging device and locomotive driving system existed in current charging system of mine-used electric locomotive with lead-acid battery, a new integrated on-board charging system was designed. The system is composed of the front-stage PWM rectifier circuit and the back-stage Buck circuit in series. When charging, the motor windings are reconstructed into the boost inductance of the PWM rectifier circuit to form an integrated on-board charging and discharging circuit. The supercapacitor is used to replace the battery as the energy storage element, which can realize quick on-board charging and discharging function. The simulation results show the system has shorter charging time and higher efficiency, and can realize functions such as power factor correction, ripple suppression, efficient and rapid charging and discharging compared with the traditional charging system.

This study proposes an efficient soft‐switched full‐bridge DC/DC converter (FBDC) topology operated with modified pulse width modulation (MPWM) for electric vehicle (EV) battery chargers, as the role of DC/DC converter is more prominent in on‐board charging. The proposed auxiliary circuit offers zero voltage switching (ZVS) turn‐on to all the active switches of the converter during full battery charging range. In consequence, the losses associated with the proposed FBDC are minimal and offer maximum efficiency as compared to available benchmark topologies operated with different gating schemes. The size of magnetic elements used in the proposed topology also reduced as to conventional FBDC operating with trailing edge pulse width modulation and phase shifted modulation gating techniques. A detailed designing and analysis of the MPWM operated ZVS FBDC is presented. Besides, the rationale behind the selection of switching frequency in order to ensure wide‐range ZVS is detailed. Further the proposed topology is compared with the other competent topologies for proving its significant merits. Simulation of the proposed configuration is performed at 3.3 kW. Following which, the experimental results obtained from a laboratory prototype of 500 W, 80 kHz validating the operability and feasibility of the proposed converter are presented. This study presents a newly integrated converter for plug‐in electric vehicles. The proposed structure achieves various modes of vehicle operation (plug‐in charging or power factor correction (PFC), propulsion and regenerative braking). Moreover, a non‐linear carrier control method is used for PFC operation which saves the voltage sensor requirement for continuous conduction mode of operation. Reduction of feedback circuitry enhances the compactness of the converter, making it more suitable for on‐board charger. Stress and loss analyses and selection of passive components of the converter have been investigated for each mode. Simulation and experimental results show the validity of the proposed converter.
