The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has disrupted the conventional face-to-face learning since 2020. Face-to-face intergenerational service-learning was switched to online learning. Fifty-six undergraduate students in the health studies program taking the compulsory subject of Practices in Health Promotion were involved in this study which aimed to evaluate the personal gains and challenges of virtual intergenerational service-learning by applying a deductive content analysis on reflective essays submitted by the students. Results indicated that students had gained leadership skills, developed sense of empathy, built a reciprocal relationship with the community, had positive impact on future development and changed in perception of older adults after the virtual intergenerational service-learning. Challenges of the experience consisted of technical issues and support, interruptions during online presentation and effectiveness of services. Background Methods Results Conclusion Naturally occurring retirement communities (NORCs) are geographic areas (generally high‐rise buildings or neighborhoods) that have a high concentration of individuals 65 years and older. Supportive service programs in NORCs can address resident needs and delay nursing home (NH) admission but understanding what factors are associated with NORC residents requiring NH admission is needed to tailor such programs. Our aim was to examine individual‐ and neighborhood‐level factors associated with NH wait‐list status in NORC residents in Ontario.We conducted a population‐based, cross‐sectional study of Ontario adults 65 years of age or older living in a NORC building as of January 1, 2020, by linking a provincial registry of NORC high‐rise buildings with health administrative data. Older adults were classified as being on the NH wait‐list if they had an open application for a NH on the index date. We conducted a multilevel logistic regression analysis using generalized estimating equations to determine individual‐ and neighborhood‐level factors associated with NH wait‐list status, including sociodemographic, clinical, healthcare use, and building factors. We explored the role of sex and age through stratification by sex (male, female) and age (65–80 and 80+ years).Among 220,864 NORC residents, 4710 individuals (2.1%) were on the NH wait‐list. Female sex, older age, immigrant status, dementia diagnosis, receiving homecare, multimorbidity, and polypharmacy (five or more unique drug names) were associated with an increased odds of wait‐list status. Several neighborhood‐level variables were associated with a significantly increased likelihood of wait‐list status, including low income, high dependency, high ethnic diversity, and living in a building with supports.NORC supportive service programs can be tailored to account for the factors associated with NH wait‐list status, allowing NORC residents who are living in the community to age in their desired place and achieve optimal health outcomes. Background Methods Results Conclusions Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT‐I) is the gold‐standard treatment for insomnia disorder in adults. Compared to young adults, older adults have increased risk for the development of conditions associated with chronic pain, which may impact the efficacy of CBT‐I in improving insomnia symptoms in older adults. This study evaluated the effect of participant‐rated pain on sleep‐related outcomes of a supervised, non‐clinician administered CBT‐I program in older adult patients with chronic insomnia disorder.Secondary analysis was conducted using data from a randomized controlled trial among 106 community‐dwelling older adult veterans (N = 106; mean age 72.1 years, 96% male, 78.3% White, 6.6% Hispanic, 5.7% African American) with chronic (≥3 months) insomnia disorder. Participants engaged in five sessions of manual‐based CBT‐I in individual or group format within one Department of Veterans Affairs healthcare system, provided by non‐clinician “sleep coaches” who had weekly telephone supervision by behavioral sleep medicine specialists. Insomnia symptoms (Insomnia Severity Index), perceived sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index), fatigue (Flinder's Fatigue Scale), daytime sleepiness (Epworth Sleepiness Scale), and perceived pain severity (items from the Geriatric Pain Measure) were assessed at 4 time points: baseline, one‐week posttreatment, 6‐month follow‐up, and 12‐month follow‐up. Mixed effects models with time invariant and time varying predictors were employed for analyses.CBT‐I improved insomnia symptoms, perceived sleep quality, fatigue, and daytime sleepiness among older veterans with chronic insomnia. Participant‐reported pain was associated with greater improvements in insomnia symptoms following CBT‐I. Pain did not affect improvements in other sleep‐related outcomes (−0.38 ≤ b ≤ 0.07, p > 0.05). Between‐subjects differences in pain, but not within‐subject changes in pain over time, appeared to play a central role in insomnia symptom improvement at posttreatment, with individuals with higher‐than‐average pain showing greater insomnia symptom improvement (ISI score reduction; −0.32 ≤ b ≤ −0.28, p ≤ 0.005).Pain did not meaningfully hinder the effects of CBT‐I on sleep outcomes. Among older veterans with chronic insomnia disorder, individuals with higher pain exhibited slightly greater improvement in insomnia than those with lower levels of pain. Precision medicine presents an opportunity to use novel, data‐driven strategies to improve patient care. The field of precision medicine has undergone many advancements over the past few years. It has moved beyond incorporation of individualized genetic risk into medical decision‐making to include multiple other factors such as unique social, demographic, behavioral, and clinical characteristics. Geriatric medicine stands to benefit heavily from the integration of precision medicine into its standard practices. Older adults, compared with other populations, have high clinical and biological heterogeneity that can alter the risks and benefits of different approaches to patient care. These factors have not been routinely considered previously by geriatricians. Yet, geriatricians' ability to address older adults' baseline heterogeneity is increasingly recognized as a cornerstone of delivering quality care in a geriatric medical practice. Given the shared focus of individualized decision‐making, precision medicine is a natural fit for geriatric medicine. This manuscript provides, via cases and discussion, examples that illustrate how precision medicine can improve the care of our older patients today. We will share specific and existing tools and evidence, and review the existing multilevel barriers to further incorporate and implement these tools into clinical practice. We propose methods to address these barriers and to help realize the full potential of precision medicine for the care of older adults. Background The adjuvanted RSV prefusion F protein–based vaccine (RSVPreF3 OA) was efficacious against RSV-related lower respiratory tract disease (RSV-LRTD) in ≥60-years-olds over 1 RSV season. We evaluated efficacy and safety of 1 RSVPreF3 OA dose and of 2 RSVPreF3 OA doses given 1 year apart against RSV-LRTD over 2 RSV seasons post–dose 1. Methods In this phase 3, blinded trial, ≥60-year-olds were randomized (1:1) to receive RSVPreF3 OA or placebo pre–season 1. RSVPreF3 OA recipients were re-randomized (1:1) to receive a second RSVPreF3 OA dose (RSV_revaccination group) or placebo (RSV_1dose group) pre–season 2; participants who received placebo pre–season 1 received placebo pre–season 2 (placebo group). Efficacy of both vaccine regimens against RSV-LRTD was evaluated over 2 seasons combined (confirmatory secondary objective, success criterion: lower limits of 2-sided CIs around efficacy estimates >20%). Results The efficacy analysis comprised 24 967 participants (RSV_1dose: 6227; RSV_revaccination: 6242; placebo: 12 498). Median efficacy follow-up was 17.8 months. Efficacy over 2 seasons of 1 RSVPreF3 OA dose was 67.2% (97.5% CI: 48.2–80.0%) against RSV-LRTD and 78.8% (95% CI: 52.6–92.0%) against severe RSV-LRTD. Efficacy over 2 seasons of a first dose followed by revaccination was 67.1% (97.5% CI: 48.1–80.0%) against RSV-LRTD and 78.8% (95% CI: 52.5–92.0%) against severe RSV-LRTD. Reactogenicity/safety of the revaccination dose were similar to dose 1. Conclusions One RSVPreF3 OA dose was efficacious against RSV-LRTD over 2 RSV seasons in ≥60-year-olds. Revaccination 1 year post–dose 1 was well tolerated but did not seem to provide additional efficacy benefit in the overall study population. Regular exercise benefits learning and memory in older adults, but the neural mechanisms mediating these effects remain unclear. Evidence in young adults indicates that acute exercise creates a favourable environment for synaptic plasticity by enhancing cortical disinhibition. As such, we investigated whether plasticity‐related disinhibition mediated the relationship between cardiorespiratory fitness and memory function in healthy older adults (n = 16, mean age = 66.06). Participants completed a graded maximal exercise test and assessments of visual and verbal memory, followed by two counterbalanced sessions involving 20 min of either high‐intensity interval training exercise or rest. Disinhibition was measured following intermittent theta burst stimulation via paired‐pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation. In line with our hypotheses, we observed a positive correlation between cardiorespiratory fitness and verbal memory, which was mediated by plasticity‐related cortical disinhibition. Our novel finding implicates cortical disinhibition as a mechanism through which the effects of acute bouts of exercise may translate to improved memory in older adults. This finding extends current understanding of the physiological mechanisms underlying the positive influence of cardiorespiratory fitness for memory function in older adults, and further highlights the importance of promoting exercise engagement to maintain cognitive health in later life. Remote screening of fall risk may prevent falls and hence, advance health and wellness of older adults. While remote health care is becoming a common practice, we question if remote evaluation of fall risk is as reliable as face-to-face (FTF).To assess the inter-tester reliability of synchronized remote and FTF fall risk assessment.This inter-format, inter-rater reliability study included 48 home dwelling older adults aged 65 and over. Five valid functional and balance tests were conducted: 30 Second Sit-to-Stand (STS), MiniBESTest, Timed up and go (TUG), 4-Meter Walk (4MWT), and Berg Balance Scale (BBS). Instructions were provided via videoconferencing, and two physiotherapists scored performance simultaneously, one remotely, and one in the room. Inter-rater reliability between remote and FTF scores was analyzed using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC2,1), standard error of measurement (SEM), minimal detectable change (MDC95) and Bland and Altman analysis.Excellent ICCs were found for STS, MiniBESTest, TUG, and BBS (0.90–0.99), and moderate for 4MWT (0.74). SEM and MDC95 values were STS (0.37,1.03 repetitions), MiniBESTest (1.43,3.97 scores), TUG (1.22,3.37 seconds), 4MWT (0.17,0.47 m/second), and BBS (1.79,4.95 scores). The Bland and Altman analysis showed excellent agreement between remote and FTF assessments of the STS. All other tests showed low to moderate agreement. Mean difference ± SD and 95%LOA were as follows: STS (−0.11 ± 0.52), (−1.13,0.91) repetitions, MiniBESTest (0.45 ± 1.98), (−3.43,4.32) scores, TUG (−0.35 ± 1.54), (−3.37,2.67) seconds, 4MWT (−0.08 ± 0.22), (−0.35,0.51) meter/second, and BBS (0.04 ± 2.53), (−4.93,5.01) scores.The findings support the responsible integration of remote fall risk assessment in clinical practice, enabling large-scale screenings and referrals for early intervention to promote healthy aging and fall prevention. Objective Methods Results Conclusion This study aimed to explore the relationship between coping styles, social support and quality of life among disabled older adults and to examine the mediating role of coping styles in the relationship between social support and quality of life.Using a purposive sampling method, three investigators conducted a face‐to‐face questionnaire survey of eligible participants in the geriatric department of a tertiary care hospital in one of the largest cities in southern China between August 2021 and March 2022. A total of 187 questionnaires were collected, of which 176 were valid, with an effective response rate of 94.1%.Social support and positive coping were positively related to disabled older adults' quality of life, while negative coping was negatively related to both social support and disabled older adults' quality of life. According to the mediating effect analysis after covariate adjustment, positive coping completely mediated the relationship between social support and older adults' quality of life (p < 0.01), with the mediating effect size accounting for 76.9% of the total effect. Negative coping had some mediating effect on the relationship between social support and older adults' quality of life (p < 0.01), with the mediating effect size accounting for 13.0% of the total effect.The quality of life of disabled older adults is low, which is closely related to their social support and coping styles. Therefore, it is important to recognize and emphasize the key role that social support systems play in improving the quality of life of this population, broaden their access to social support and guide them to adopt positive coping styles. While general cognitive skills decline during aging, numerical skills seem to be mainly preserved. Such skills are essential for an independent life up to old age, e.g., when dealing with money or time. Operating with numbers usually requires number magnitude and place-value processing. The question is whether these processes are negatively affected by aging due to the general cognitive decline or positively affected due to lifelong experience with numbers. Therefore, we investigated age-related changes in the distance and compatibility effects in single-digit, two-digit, and four-digit number comparison. On the one hand, older adults took longer for number processing and showed a smaller distance effect, indicating altered number magnitude representations. On the other hand, older adults were better in place-value processing as indicated by a smaller compatibility effect than in younger adults. AbstractAt the intersection of social digitization and population aging, the challenge of older adults fitting into digital life is becoming more prominent. To understand how to help older adults adopt digital life, this study builds upon the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and developed the Digital Technology Motivation Interaction Model (DTMIM) to study the complex effects of autonomous motivation (perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, perceived enjoyment), controlled motivation, and digital feedback on WeChat adoption among older adults, as well as the urban-rural differences. The results of the questionnaire survey and Fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) show that: First, no single construct is a necessary condition for a high (non-high) attitude toward using (ATU) or high (non-high) actual using (AU). Second, we identified two configurations that trigger high ATU including the autonomy-motivation type and digital feedback under motivational synergy, and three configurations that enable high AU including motivational synergy type, digital feedback under autonomous extrinsic motivation, and digital feedback under motivational synergy. Third, the configurations of high ATU and high AU show significant differences between urban and rural areas. Autonomy motivation plays a universal role in urban older adults’ WeChat adoption, while digital feedback is critical for rural older adults. The configuration analysis of DTMIM and urban-rural differences is not only an adaptive improvement of TAM but also provides new methods and perspectives for future research on the adoption of digital technology. Background/Objectives: As part of a larger study, and in collaboration with rural primary health care teams, RaDAR (Rural Dementia Action Research) primary care memory clinics have evolved and continue to spread in communities across southeast Saskatchewan, Canada. This study focuses on the geographical areas of the four communities where RaDAR memory clinics were first developed and implemented and describes the services and supports available to older adults including memory clinic patients and families living in these areas. Our goal was to identify and describe existing programs and gaps, create inventories and maps, and explore the service experiences of family caregivers of people living with dementia in these rural areas. Methods: Using a qualitative descriptive design, an environmental scan of services was conducted from December 2020 to April 2021 using focus groups (n = 4) with health care providers/managers (n = 12), a secondary source (e.g., program brochures) review, and a systematic internet search targeting four RaDAR memory clinic communities and surrounding areas via community websites, online resources, and the 211 Saskatchewan service database. Data were analyzed using content analysis; findings informed semi-structured interviews with caregivers (n = 5) conducted from March to July 2022, which were analyzed thematically. Geographic areas explored in this study covered an area of approximately 5666 km2. Results: From the scan, 43 services were identified, categorized into 7 service types, and mapped by location. Seventeen services were dementia-related. Services included social/leisure activities (n = 14), general support/referrals (n = 13), transportation (n = 7), information/education (n = 4), respite (n = 2), in-home care (n = 2), and safety (n = 1). Service levels included local (n = 24), provincial (n = 17), and national (n = 2), and were offered in-person, remotely (or both) with 20 services across 4 service types offered remotely. In general, most services had no fees, involved self-referral, and providers had a range of education/training. Key interview themes reflected the need for locally available, accessible services that offer (i) individualized, flexible, needs-based approaches, (ii) in-home care and continuity of care, and (iii) both formal and informal supports. Key gaps were identified, including (i) locally accessible, available services and resources in general, (ii) dementia-related training and education for service providers, and (iii) awareness of available services. Benefits of services, consequences of gaps, and recommendations to address gaps were reported. In general, service providers and program participants were an even mix of females and males, and program content was gender neutral. Conclusions: Findings highlight a range of available services, and a number of varied service-user experiences and perspectives, in these rural areas. Key service gaps were identified, and caregivers made some specific recommendations to address these gaps. Background Methods Results Conclusion Evidence suggests that reminiscence therapy can effectively reduce cognitive and psychological symptoms. This study was conducted to examine the effect of individual reminiscence therapy on cognitive level, quality of life and depressive symptoms in older adults with type 2 diabetes.This study is an experimental type, randomised controlled study designed in pre‐test – post‐test design. The sample size of the study consisted of 58 older adults with type 2 diabetes, consisting of 29 intervention and 29 control subjects. The older adults in the intervention group were individually subjected to 5 weeks of reminiscence therapy in two sessions (each session 40–45 min) per week. No intervention was applied to the control group. Personal Information Form, Standardised Mini Mental Test, SF‐36 Quality of Life and Beck Depression Inventory were used to collect the data.While there was no significant difference between the pre‐test Mini Mental Test, Beck Depression Inventory total score and SF‐36 Quality of Life Scale mental and physical health sub‐dimension mean scores of the older adults in the intervention group and the mean scores of those in the control group (P > 0.05), the difference between the Mini Mental Test, Beck Depression Inventory total score and SF‐36 Quality of Life Scale mental and physical health sub‐dimension mean scores of the older adults in the intervention and control groups in the post‐test was found to be statistically significant (P < 0.05). The post‐test Mini Mental Test total score, SF‐36 Quality of Life Scale mental and physical health sub‐dimension mean scores of the older adults in the intervention group were higher than the older adults in the control group. It was determined that the post‐test Beck Depression Inventory total mean scores of the older adults in the intervention group were lower than the older adults in the control group.Reminiscence therapy can positively affect cognitive levels, quality of life and depression symptoms of older adults living in the community. Descriptive statistics, univariate analysis, Spearman correlation analysis, and ordinal logistic regression were applied for data analysis.The prevalence of physical inactivity among the nursing home residents reached 88.46%. Ordinal logistic regression results showed that exercise self‐efficacy, perceived exercise benefits, physical function, availability of physical activity instruction, having depression, number of chronic diseases and living with spouse were the main influencing determinants of physical inactivity and explained 63.7% of the variance.Physical inactivity was considerable in nursing home residents in China and influenced by complex factors. AbstractObjectivesMethodResultsConclusionThis review aims to evaluate and synthesize quantitative and qualitative findings on perceived control and value placed on control within the context of suicidal ideation or nonfatal suicidal behaviors in older adults.A comprehensive literature search was completed in June 2022, October 2022, and November 2023. Included studies focused on perceived control or value placed on control and on suicidal ideation or nonfatal suicidal behavior. Studies were published in English and included older adults (≥ 60 years) in separate analyses. Studies focusing on self-efficacy were excluded.Twelve studies with 10 unique samples of 1487 total participants from eight countries were assessed. Quantitative studies indicated that perceived control and value placed on control are significant correlates of suicidal ideation and nonfatal suicidal behaviors, while qualitative studies highlighted that individuals who survive suicide attempts often specify decreased perceived control as a reason for their attempts.Results of this review indicate that perceived control and value placed on control are relevant variables when studying suicidal ideation and nonfatal suicidal behavior. This conclusion should be considered preliminary. Future research should examine heterogeneous samples, adopt gold standard assessments, and assess covariates in the associations. Background: As the population ages, senior care for older adults in China has become increasingly important and has attracted the attention of both government and society. This study aimed to explore preferences and influencing factors related to senior care among older Chinese adults and thus propose effective and targeted strategies for the development of a comprehensive care system for older adults in the aging Chinese population. Methods: Data were obtained from a cross-sectional survey conducted in sixteen communities or villages in Jiangsu Province, China, from July to September 2021. Guided by the Andersen Behavioral Model, multivariate logistic regression was conducted to identify factors associated with preferences for senior care arrangements. Results: A total of 870 respondents were included in the study, 60.11% of whom preferred receiving care in their own homes, while only 13.68% chose residential care facilities (RCFs). For predisposing factors, rural respondents preferred receiving care in their own homes compared to urban respondents (children's home: OR = 0.55, P < 0.01; RCF: OR = 0.58, P < 0.01). Concerning enabling factors, respondents who were not employed (OR = 2.30, P < 0.01) and those without financial support (OR = 2.73, P < 0.05) preferred RCFs to their own homes. Respondents receiving life assistance (sometimes: OR = 2.76, P < 0.001; regularly: OR = 2.57, P < 0.01; every day: OR = 3.57, P < 0.001) preferred their children's homes to their own homes. In terms of need factors, respondents with noncommunicable diseases (NCDs, OR > 1, P < 0.05), those who knew about RCFs (some: OR = 0.53, P < 0.005; no: OR = 0.10, P < 0.001) and those with a good impression of RCFs (fair: OR = 3.72, P < 0.05; good: OR = 11.91, P < 0.001) preferred receiving care in RCFs compared to their counterparts. Conclusions: Older Chinese adults' senior care preferences were affected by predisposing factors, enabling factors, and need factors. AbstractThis study aims to evaluate the usability of two Food Delivery Apps (FDAs) available in the market with a sample of older adults. We performed a usability study of basic tasks required to purchase groceries with 12 participants (Mage = 70.92, SD = 4.56). Results showed that interaction experience with both apps was similar. Most participants could perform the tasks, but not efficiently. Tasks that took the longest mean time were adding the first product to the cart and scheduling the delivery service. We found 22 interface barriers for FDA1 and 23 for FDA2. The most frequent errors were caused by a lack of a clear roadmap to guide the purchase process, unclear feedback when adding products, information overload, and difficulty distinguishing interactive buttons from text/icons and mandatory actions from optional ones. System Usability Scale results were below the suggested cut-off point of 68. This article aims to investigate the influence of changes in levels of cytokines in the 2 months after a hip fracture repair on 5‐year mortality.This is a prospective cohort study from the Baltimore Hip Studies (BHS) with 191 community‐dwelling older men and women (≥65 years) who had recently undergone surgical repair of an acute hip fracture, with recruitment from May 2006 to June 2011. Plasma interleukin‐6 (IL‐6), soluble tumor necrosis factor alpha receptor1 (sTNFα‐R1), and interleukin‐1 receptor agonist (IL‐1RA) were obtained within 22 days of admission and at 2 months. All‐cause mortality over 5 years was determined. Logistic regression analysis tested the associations between the cytokines' trajectories and mortality over 5 years, adjusted for covariates (age, sex, education, body mass index, lower extremity physical activities of daily living, and Charlson comorbidity index).High levels of IL‐6 and sTNFα‐R1 at baseline with small or no decline at 2 months were associated with higher odds of 5‐year mortality compared with those with lower levels at baseline and greater decline at 2 months after adjustment for age, and other potential confounders (OR = 4.71, p = 0.01 for IL‐6; OR = 15.03, p = 0.002 for sTNFα‐R1). Similar results that failed to reach significance were found for IL‐1RA (OR = 2.40, p = 0.18). Background: Previous researches examining the impact of dietary nutrition on mortality risk have mainly focused on individual nutrients, however the interaction of these nutrients has not been considered. The purpose of this study was to identify of nutrient deficiencies patterns and analyze their potential impact on mortality risk in older adults with hypertension. Methods: We included participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) study. The latent class analysis (LCA) was applied to uncover specific malnutrition profiles within the sample. Risk of the end points across the phenogroups was compared using Kaplan–Meier analysis and Cox proportional hazard regression model. Multinomial logistic regression was used to determine the influencing factors of specific malnutrition profiles. Results: A total of 6924 participants aged 60 years or older with hypertension from NHANES 2003–2014 was followed until December 31, 2019 with a median follow-up of 8.7 years. Various nutrients included vitamin A, vitamin B1, vitamin B12, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E, vitamin K, fiber, folate, calcium, magnesium, zinc, copper, iron, and selenium, and LCA revealed 4 classes of malnutrition. Regarding all-cause mortality, "Nutrient Deprived" group showed the strongest hazard ratio (1.42 from 1.19 to 1.70) compared with "Adequate Nutrient" group, followed by "Inadequate Nutrient" group (1.29 from 1.10 to 1.50), and "Low Fiber, Magnesium, and Vit E" group (1.17 from 1.02 to 1.35). Although the number of older adults requiring care is rapidly increasing, nursing homes have long faced issues such as the absence of a home-like environment. This exploratory mixed-method study investigated how residents (n = 15) in a long-term care unit in South Korea perceive home-like features and privacy in their living spaces. The results indicated that most participants were satisfied with the homeliness and privacy of their environment, but some were unhappy with the level of privacy. Most participants had low scores on the Geriatric Depression Scale and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, indicating low levels of depression and sleep disorders. Sleep quality was affected by factors such as sensory environment, staff visits, and room temperature. Although participants appreciated social support and private rooms, they expressed a desire for larger rooms. Secondarily, the association of clinical, and socioeconomic factors with MR and clinical outcomes was sought.A retrospective cohort study was carried out at a third-level neurological disease referral center in Mexico. All patients older than 60 years admitted from January 2017 to December 2018 were considered. MUST, clinical and socioeconomic factors were assessed at hospital admission. Outcomes were followed up to hospital discharge or a maximum of 6 months.A total of 765 patients were included, of whom 24.7% (n = 189) were at high risk. A high MR was independently associated with mortality (OR 3.09; 95% CI 1.60-5.98, p = .001) and LOS >14 days (OR 4.38; 95% CI 2.79-6.89, p = <.001). The only factors independently associated with high MR was economic dependence and unemployment. Patients with high MR and economic dependence (OR 4.0; 95% CI 1.34-11.99, p = .013) or unemployment (OR 3.43; 95% CI 1.17-10.06, p = .025) had the highest mortality.In hospitalized older adults with neurological diseases, high MR is independently associated with increased mortality and LOS. Purpose: This study aimed to assess the relationship between A Body Shape Index (ABSI) and cognitive impairment among older adults in the United States. Methods: This cross-sectional study analyzed cognitive function in 2,752 individuals aged 60 and older using data from the 2011–2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Cognitive assessments were conducted using the Immediate Recall Test (IRT), Delayed Recall Test (DRT), Animal Fluency Test (AFT), and Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST). A Body Shape Index (ABSI) was calculated from waist circumference (WC), weight, and height. The relationship between ABSI and cognitive outcomes was examined through multifactorial linear regression, smooth curve fitting, and subgroup and interaction analyses. Results: With complete data, 2752 persons 60 and older participated in the study. After adjusting for covariables, these results showed statistically significant negative relationships between ABSI, IRT, and DSST scores. The negative correlation between DSST and ABSI is more substantial in males than females. There is less of a negative link between ABSI, AFT, and DSST among drinkers who consume 12 or more drinks annually compared to those who consume less. Furthermore, compared to individuals without high blood pressure(HBP), those who suffered HBP showed a more significant negative connection between ABSI and AFT. AbstractWith the maturity and development of digital technology, voice interaction has been widely used in different devices or scenarios. However, older adults have low satisfaction and acceptance levels when using voice interaction. To improve older adults’ user experience of voice interaction, the current study explored the effect of response time and feedback type on the user experience of voice interaction among older adults. A Xiaodu smart speaker was used as the experimental device, and the response time was recorded using artificial breakpoints. Our study consisted of two experiments that explored the voice wake-up and voice dialogue stages under different combinations of response time and feedback type and older adults rated their satisfaction, comfort, anthropomorphism, and perceived speed level. The results showed that: (1) the optimal wake-up response time for older adults is 250–1000 ms, and the optimal dialogue response time is 600–1500 ms. (2) As response time increases, older adults’ satisfaction, comfort, and anthropomorphism toward smart speakers decrease. In the wake-up stage, the scores in the time period >2000 ms is significantly lower than those shorter response times. In the dialogue stage, the scores in the time periods >3000 ms are significantly lower than those shorter response times. (3) In the wake-up stage, the voice-based prompt “Hello, I’m Xiaodu” scores highest among all kinds of feedback types. In the dialogue stage, the social-oriented feedback scores higher in satisfaction and comfort than task-oriented feedback. Background: The global population is increasingly aging, imposing a substantial burden on social and healthcare systems as aging is associated with gradual muscle wasting and functional decline. Consumption of protein-rich foods, such as livestock-based meat, providing high-quality proteins can prevent muscle wasting and related functional decline in older adults. However, there is a lack of data on the older adults' perceptions about meat consumption, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. Objective: To explore the perceptions about dietary meat consumption among older adults in Gasabo district, Kigali, Rwanda. Methods: We conducted a descriptive qualitative study, using focus group discussions. A total of eight FGDs, lasting between 55 and 80 min, were conducted with gender-mixed groups, including 31 men and 33 women aged ≥ 55 years old. Eight older adults participated in each FGD session, and all discussions were conducted in the local language (Kinyarwanda) using a pre-designed interview guide. The discussions were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim and translated into English. The transcript was inductively analyzed using thematic analytical process. Results: Three themes were identified from the data, predominantly related to motives and barriers of meat consumption. The motives of meat consumption included improved quality and taste of the diet, improving own health, and having a social function. Barriers of meat consumption were perceived to be related to health risks, sustainability concerns (depletion of resources), and religious beliefs. Lastly, it was widely perceived that meat was unavailable and economically inaccessible, thus meat consumption was perceived to be associated with improved wealth. Conclusion: The findings revealed a low and declining meat consumption among older adults due to poverty. Background: A person's sense of coherence (SoC) is likely to affect coping when exposed to a life changing event like the COVID -19 pandemic, which impacted the older population especially hard, an age group that already suffers from a lot of mental illness. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the associations between SoC and mental health in older adults using both screening scales and hair cortisol concentrations (HCC). Method: A cross-sectional design studying a cohort of 70–80 years old, N = 260, set in Swedish primary care during the pandemic years 2021–2022. Instruments used are sense of coherence 13 (SoC-13), EQ-5D-3L, Geriatric depression scale 20 (GDS-20), Hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS), and Perceived stress scale 10 (PSS-10). Sociodemography and factors concerning SoC, and mental health are explored. HCC are measured using radioimmunoassay. Outcome measures are factors independently associated with SoC. Linear regression models were performed with SoC as dependent variable, and priory path analyses explored whether associations with SoC were direct, or indirect via anxiety. Results: SoC was significantly associated with anxiety (p < 0.001), perceived economic status (p = 0.003), belief in the future (p = 0.001), and perceived negative mental effect from the COVID -19 pandemic (p = 0.002). The latter was 96% indirectly associated with SoC (p < 0.001), whereas perceived economic status together with belief in the future was 82% directly associated with SoC (p = 0.17). HCC and sex were not significantly associated with SoC, but, noticeably, high HCC was equally distributed between women and men. Women reported significantly lower quality of life (p = 0.03), and more symptoms of anxiety (p = 0.001) and depression (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Anxiety, belief in the future, perceived negative effect on mental health due to the pandemic, and perceived economic status were significantly associated with SoC. Anxiety is suggested to be important in explaining the association between perceived negative mental effect from the COVID-19 pandemic and SoC. Background: A growing number of older adults (ages 65+) live with Type 1 diabetes. Simultaneously, technologies such as continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) have become standard of care. There is thus a need to understand better the complex dynamics that promote use of CGM (and other care innovations) over time in this age group. Our aim was to adapt methods from systems thinking, specifically a participatory approach to system dynamics modeling called group model building (GMB), to model the complex experiences that may underlie different trajectories of CGM use among this population. Herein, we report on the feasibility, strengths, and limitations of this methodology. Methods: We conducted a series of GMB workshops and validation interviews to collect data in the form of questionnaires, diagrams, and recordings of group discussion. Data were integrated into a conceptual diagram of the "system" of factors associated with uptake and use of CGM over time. We evaluate the feasibility of each aspect of the study, including the teaching of systems thinking to older adult participants. We collected participant feedback on positive aspects of their experiences and areas for improvement. Results: We completed nine GMB workshops with older adults and their caregivers (N = 33). Each three-hour in-person workshop comprised: (1) questionnaires; (2) the GMB session, including both didactic components and structured activities; and (3) a brief focus group discussion. Within the GMB session, individual drawing activities proved to be the most challenging for participants, while group activities and discussion of relevant dynamics over time for illustrative (i.e., realistic but not real) patients yielded rich engagement and sufficient information for system diagramming. Study participants liked the opportunity to share experiences with peers, learning and enhancing their knowledge, peer support, age-specific discussions, the workshop pace and structure, and the systems thinking framework. Participants gave mixed feedback on the workshop duration. Conclusions: The study demonstrates preliminary feasibility, acceptability, and the value of GMB for engaging older adults about key determinants of complex health behaviors over time. To our knowledge, few studies have extended participatory systems science methods to older adult stakeholders. The earlier the information curve of an item is lifted, the more information it provides in the early stages of cognitive impairment. Regression coefficient (β) represents the relative rate of cognitive decline. The cognitive impairment values estimated from the Longitudinal IRT were fitted to a mixed‐effects model to examine cognitive impairment trajectories.‘Draw the figure on B Card’ (δ = −0.816) was the most challenging item, followed by ‘recalling ‘clothes” (δ = 0.348) and ‘recalling ‘apples” (δ = 0.419), while ‘name the ‘pen” (δ = 4.402) was the simplest instruction for the old adults. The curves of the items in the recall dimension began to rise in the early stages of cognitive impairment. This qualitative study investigates clinician and patient perspectives on CNS medication deprescribing during hospitalization using a behavioral change framework, aiming to inform interventions and identify recommendations to enhance hospital deprescribing processes.This qualitative study focused on hospitalists, primary care providers, pharmacists, and patients aged ≥60 years hospitalized on a general medicine service and prescribed ≥1 CNS medications. Using semi‐structured interviews and focus groups, we aimed to evaluate patient medication knowledge, prior deprescribing experiences, and decision‐making preferences, as well as provider processes and tools for medication evaluation and deprescribing. Rapid qualitative analysis applying the Capability, Opportunity, Motivation, and Behavior (COM‐B) framework revealed themes influencing deprescribing behavior in patients and providers.A total of 52 participants (20 patients and 32 providers) identified facilitators and barriers across deprescribing steps and generated recommended strategies to address them. Clinicians and patients highlighted the opportunity for CNS medication deprescribing during hospitalizations, facilitated by multidisciplinary teams enhancing clinicians' capability to make medication changes. Both groups also stressed the importance of intensive patient engagement, education, and monitoring during hospitalizations, acknowledging challenges in timing and extent of deprescribing, with some patients preferring decisions deferred to outpatient clinicians. Hospitalist and pharmacist recommendations centered on early pharmacist involvement for medication reconciliation, expanding pharmacy consultation and clinician education on deprescribing, whereas patients recommended enhancing shared decision‐making through patient education on medication adverse effects, tapering plans, and alternatives. Aim: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) among Danish nursing home residents (aged ⩾65 years). Methods: Individuals with T2D in the Danish population of older adults in 2018 were identified using a Danish diabetes register based on administrative and clinical register data. Data on age, sex, type of housing, educational level and place of origin were obtained from various high-quality administrative registers. We calculated frequencies of T2D among older adults living in nursing homes and in other types of housing. We performed a multiple logistic regression analysis to estimate the odds ratio (OR) of T2D among people living in nursing homes and adjusted for sex, age, educational level and place of origin. Results: All Danish older adults aged ⩾65 years, alive and living in Denmark on 31 December 2018 were included (N =1,170,517). Nursing home residents accounted for 37,891 older adults, and of these, 19% had T2D, whereas 14% of older adults living in other types of housing had T2D. According to the multiple logistic regression analysis, nursing home residents had a higher OR of having T2D compared to older adults living in other types of housing (OR=1.47; confidence interval 1.43–1.51) when adjusting for socio-demographic factors. Conclusions: The prevalence of T2D in nursing home residents exceeds the prevalence in the background population at ⩾65 years of age. This indicates a need for increased focus on individualised interdisciplinary care plans aimed at maintaining physical function and maximising quality of life for this group of vulnerable older adults. Aims and objectives: We examined how context is used to facilitate reading in the second language (L2) compared with the first language (L1), and how L2 availability and age modulate these context effects. Methodology: Using self-paced reading, participants read high- and low-constraint Hebrew sentences. In Experiment 1, L1 (n = 45) and L2 (n = 48) Hebrew readers were compared, whereas in Experiment 2, only L2 readers (n = 131) were examined, testing modulations by L2 availability and age. Data and analysis: Reading times of target, post target, and sentence final words were analyzed using linear-mixed-effects models. Findings: In Experiment 1, L2 readers differed from L1 readers in contextual processing, as evident in the significant interaction between context type and language background on the final word measure. In Experiment 2, L2 readers with lower L2 availability scores differed from those with higher scores, and younger readers differed from older ones, in the way high- and low-constraining context affected their reading behavior in the target word and in the final word of the sentence. These differences were indicated by significant interactions between context type and L2 availability as well as between context type and age group. These findings are best understood under a compensatory processing account. Originality: By complementing L1–L2 group comparisons with in-depth examination of the L2 profile, the current study reveals a continuous effect of L2 availability, such that a lower L2 availability is associated with a greater reliance on context. Furthermore, the inclusion of older and younger adults provides converging evidence to the use of contextual support as a compensatory mechanism when lexical processing is more effortful. Background: Monitoring the lifestyles of older adults helps promote independent living and ensure their well-being. The common technologies for home monitoring include wearables, ambient sensors, and smart household meters. While wearables can be intrusive, ambient sensors require extra installation, and smart meters are becoming integral to smart city infrastructure. Research Gap: The previous studies primarily utilized high-resolution smart meter data by applying Non-Intrusive Appliance Load Monitoring (NIALM) techniques, leading to significant privacy concerns. Meanwhile, some Japanese power companies have successfully employed low-resolution data to monitor lifestyle patterns discreetly. Scope and Methodology: This study develops a lifestyle monitoring system for older adults using low-resolution smart meter data, mapping electricity consumption to appliance usage. The power consumption data are collected at 15-min intervals, and the background power threshold distinguishes between the active and inactive periods (0/1). The system quantifies activity through an active score and assesses daily routines by comparing these scores against the long-term norms. Background: This study examines the relationship between physical and mental function and frailty, independently and in conjunction with polypharmacy, among older adults. Methods: This cross-sectional study consisted of 368 participants aged ≥60 years. The participants were categorized into either robust or frail groups using Fried's frailty phenotype. Physical functions were assessed using grip strength, gait speed, Timed Up and Go (TUG), the Five Chair Sit to Stand Test (FCSST) and the Six-Minute Walk Test (SMWT). Mental functions were assessed using cognitive function and depression. Cognitive function was measured using Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Depression was assessed with the Korean version of the Short Geriatric Depression Scale (SGDS). Results: The mean age of study population was 75.4 years. In this population, we identified 78.8% (n = 290) robust participants and 21.2% (n = 78) frail participants. The study examined frailty status (frail vs. non-frail) and frailty with and without polypharmacy using multivariate logistic regressions, adjusting for age and sex. In the logistic regression model estimating the risk of frailty, after adjustments for age, sex, BMI, and number of medications, individuals with low SMWT showed a significantly increased risk of frailty, with an odds ratio (OR) of 8.66 and a 95% confidence interval (CI) of 4.55–16.48. Additionally, global cognitive function was associated with a 1.97-fold increase in frailty risk (95% CI: 1.02–3.67). Moreover, in models adjusted for age, sex, and BMI to assess frailty risk linked to polypharmacy, the TUG, SMWT, and SGDS all showed increased risks, with ORs of 3.65 (95% CI: 1.07–12.47), 5.06 (95% CI: 1.40–18.32), and 5.71 (95% CI: 1.79–18.18), respectively. Conclusions: Physical function (SMWT, FCSST, TUG) and mental function (depression, cognition) were associated with frailty. Background/Objectives: The psoas: lumbar vertebral index (PLVI) is a simple and convenient measure to assess central sarcopenia. Recent studies have utilized the psoas area to indirectly assess sarcopenia and frailty, exploring their associations with various health outcomes. This study aims to investigate the relationship between the PLVI and postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) in patients aged 60 years and above following a herpes zoster (HZ) infection. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of data from 351 patients (≥60 years) who developed HZ between January 2019 and December 2023; the patients were divided into two groups based on the presence or absence of PHN after HZ onset. Results: The analyses using receiver operating characteristic curves revealed a value for the area under the curve of 0.813 for PLVI and 0.769 for the modified frailty index (mFI). In a multivariate logistic regression analysis, numerical rating scale scoring, a low PLVI, and a greater number of categorical mFI variables (adjusted odds ratio: 1.30, 3.27, and 2.46, respectively) were found to be significant independent predictors of PHN. Conclusions: Our findings highlight the association between a low PLVI and PHN in an older population. Simple Summary: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) represent a cornerstone in contemporary cancer therapy, yet managing immune-related adverse events (irAEs) remains pivotal. These events, characterized by reinvigorated autoimmune responses against normal tissues, present particular challenges, especially regarding their safety and tolerability in elderly patients. To address this gap, we conducted a multicenter retrospective cohort study focusing on patients with non-small cell lung cancer undergoing ICI therapy. Our findings revealed that irAE incidence, severity, and organ specificity did not significantly differ between elderly patients and their younger counterparts. However, elderly patients tended to transition to the best supportive care following irAE onset. These findings suggest that while age alone may not preclude ICI treatment, irAEs may be less tolerated in certain elderly individuals, potentially impacting patient prognosis. Identifying markers of irAE intolerance, such as frailty, sarcopenia, and cachexia, alongside chronological age, could aid in optimizing patient selection and clinical benefits of ICI treatment in this population. With cancer diagnosis occurring at older ages, the use of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) has extended to older adults. However, the safety of immune-related adverse events (irAEs) in this population remains unclear and relies on data extrapolated from younger adults. This multicenter retrospective study aimed to examine irAE prevalence and tolerability in older adults. We included 436 patients with non-small lung cancer undergoing ICI therapy and dichotomized them into two age groups (< or ≥75 years). Incidence of any irAE grade, grade ≥3 irAEs, and steroid usage after irAE occurrence was similar between younger (n = 332) and older groups (n = 104). While the younger patients with irAEs showed prolonged overall survival in the 12-month landmark Kaplan–Meier analysis (Hazard ratio (HR) 0.59, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.38–0.89, p = 0.013), the older cohort did not (HR 0.80, 95% CI 0.36–1.78, p = 0.588). Although no differences were observed with ICI continuation or re-challenge after irAE onset, the elderly cohort had double the irAE cases that required a transition to best supportive care (BSC) (11.3% vs. 22.4%, p = 0.026). In conclusion, although irAE prevalence remains consistent regardless of age, the increased conversion to BSC post-irAE onset in older adults suggests diminished tolerability and the potential absence of favorable prognosis associated with irAEs in this population. Simple Summary: Older adults with metastatic cancer of the urinary tract often do not receive optimal cancer treatments. Through our real-world study at a tertiary cancer center, we investigated the clinical characteristics, treatment patterns, and outcomes among older patients compared to younger adults receiving first-line systemic treatment. We found that older patients tend to be more suited to receiving immunotherapy and lower amounts of chemotherapy. When treated with regimens tailored to their overall health, they tolerate treatment as well as younger patients and experience similar life-prolonging benefits from these. Our results further reinforce that age alone is not a predictive factor for survival in patients who receive systemic treatment for advanced cancer. These findings suggest the need for appropriate treatment selection and tailored regimens for older adults with metastatic cancer of the urinary tract. Metastatic urinary tract cancer (mUTC) is challenging to treat in older adults due to comorbidities. We compared the clinical courses of younger and older (≥70 years) adults with mUTC receiving first-line (1L) systemic therapy in a tertiary cancer center. Baseline clinical characteristics, treatments received, tolerability, and survival outcomes were analyzed. Among 212 patients (103 older vs. 109 younger), the older patients had lower hemoglobin at baseline (84% vs. 71%, p = 0.03), the majority were cisplatin-ineligible (74% vs. 45%, p < 0.001), received more immunotherapy-based treatments in the 1L (52% vs. 36%, p = 0.01), received fewer subsequent lines of treatment (median 0 vs. 1, p = 0.003), and had lower clinical trial participation (30% vs. 18%, p = 0.05) compared to the younger patients. When treated with 1L chemotherapy, older patients required more dose adjustments (53.4% vs. 23%, p = 0.001) and received fewer cycles of chemotherapy (median 4 vs. 5, p= 0.01). Older patients had similar OS (11.2 months vs. 14 months, p = 0.06) and similar rates of treatment-related severe toxicity and healthcare visits, independent of the type of systemic treatment received, compared to younger patients. Introduction: This study aimed to investigate the association between handgrip strength and suicidal ideation in representative samples of adults aged ≥50 years from six LMICs (China, Ghana, India, Mexico, Russia, and South Africa). Methods: Cross‐sectional, community‐based data from the World Health Organization's Study on Global Aging and Adult Health were analyzed. Handgrip strength quintiles by sex were created based on the average value of two handgrip measurements of the dominant hand. Self‐reported information on past 12‐month suicidal ideation was collected. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was conducted to assess associations. Results: Data on 34,129 individuals were analyzed [mean (SD) age 62.4 (16.0) years; age range 50–114 years; 52.1% females]. After adjustment for potential confounders, in the overall sample, compared to the handgrip strength quintile with the highest values [Quintile 1 (Q1)], Q2, Q3, Q4, and Q5 were associated with significant 2.15 (95% CI = 1.05–4.39), 2.78 (95% CI = 1.06–7.32), 3.53 (95% CI = 1.68–7.42), and 6.79 (95% CI = 2.80–16.48) times higher odds for suicidal ideation. Conclusions: Lower handgrip strength was significantly and dose‐dependently associated with higher odds for suicidal ideation in adults aged ≥50 years from LMICs. Future longitudinal studies are needed to understand the underlying mechanisms, and whether increasing general muscular strength and physical function may lead to reduction in suicidal ideation. Background While previous studies indicate muscle-strengthening exercises may reduce mortality risk, further research is needed to increase certainty of the evidence. We investigated overall and dose-response associations between weight training and the risks of all-cause, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer mortality in a large cohort of older adults with long follow-up time and a large number of deaths. We also investigated the joint associations of weight training and aerobic exercise with mortality risk. Methods Weight training was assessed via self-report in 2004–05 in the National Institutes of Health-American Association of Retired Persons (NIH-AARP) Diet and Health Study (USA; n  = 216 339), with follow-up to 2019. Cox regression estimated the hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the associations between weight training and mortality, after adjusting for confounders including aerobic exercise. Results Around 25% of participants [mean age = 69.9 years (standard deviation = 5.4), 58% men] reported engaging in weight training over the past year, and there were 79 107 (37%) deaths. Engaging in any weight training (vs none) was associated with lower risks of all-cause (HR = 0.94; 95% CI = 0.93–0.96), CVD (HR = 0.92; 95% CI = 0.90–0.95) and cancer mortality (HR = 0.95; 95% CI = 0.92–0.98). More time spent in weight training was associated with only marginally greater risk reductions. Larger risk reductions were observed among women than men. Performing both aerobic exercise and weight training conferred the greatest mortality risk reduction; weight training was not associated with mortality risk among participants who did no aerobic exercise. Snoezelen Multisensory Stimulation (SMSS) is a non‐pharmacological intervention that provides controlled multisensorial environments to stimulate the primary senses: sight, hearing, smell, touch, taste, proprioceptive and vestibular. Even though the use and potential of SMSS have been widespread in the literature regarding certain target populations (autism, developmental disabilities) and settings (e.g. leisure, therapeutic), its effectiveness in older adults with neurocognitive disorders (e.g. dementia, mild cognitive impairment) and other pathologies (e.g. psychiatric disorders, oncological diseases) is still unclear. Therefore, a systematic review of the literature was conducted to address this issue. The recommendations of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses (PRISMA) and of the Cochrane Collaboration were followed. An initial search on PubMed and Scopus databases resulted in 86 articles of which 14 met inclusion criteria and were reviewed in detail. The outcomes showed that most of the studies (n = 13) focused on the effects of SMSS on behaviour and mood in older adults with major cognitive disorders (i.e. dementia). Although there is scarce literature on its impact on cognition, psychophysiological measures (e.g. heart rate, oxygen saturation), daily living functionality and quality of life, this type of intervention seems to contribute to delaying the worsening in severity of the neurocognitive disorders from the mildest to the most severe stages. Likewise, it is legitimate to consider the possibility of potential benefits to older adults with less severe neurocognitive disorders or other pathologies, but more research is needed. Falls are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among adults aged 65 years and older (older adults) and are increasingly recognized as a chronic condition. Yet, fall-related care is infrequently provided in a chronic care context despite fall-related death rates increasing by 41% between 2012 and 2021. One of the many challenges to addressing falls is the absence of fall-focused chronic disease management programs, which improve outcomes of other chronic conditions, like diabetes. Policies, information systems, and clinical-community connections help form the backbone of chronic disease management programs, yet these elements are often missing in fall prevention. Reframing fall prevention through the Expanded Chronic Care Model (ECCM) guided by implementation science to simultaneously support the uptake of evidence-based practices could help improve the care of older adults at risk for falling. The ECCM includes seven components: (1) self-management/develop personal skills, (2) decision support, (3) delivery system design/re-orient health services, (4) information systems, (5) build healthy public policy, (6) create supportive environments, and (7) strengthen community action. Applying the ECCM to falls-related care by integrating health care delivery system changes, community resources, and public policies to support patient-centered engagement for self-management offers the potential to prevent falls more effectively among older adults. Background and Objectives Public health concerns surrounding social isolation and loneliness heightened during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, as infection prevention measures led to increased feelings of loneliness and depression. Our objective was to evaluate the implementation of the HOW-R-U? program, during the pandemic (March 2020–December 2021). HOW-R-U? is a weekly volunteer-delivered telephone program designed to facilitate social connection and ease feelings of social isolation, loneliness, and depression in older people. Research Design and Methods This pragmatic study used the Implementation Framework for Aged Care to adapt and implement HOW-R-U? in an Australian aged and community care organization and a tertiary health service in Melbourne. The evaluation involved analysis of program data, semistructured interviews, and surveys with program recipients, volunteers, and referrers. A process evaluation was conducted alongside an assessment of outcomes including pre- and post-symptoms of isolation, depression, and loneliness. Results The implementation evaluation indicated that codesigned systems and processes effectively supported the ongoing implementation of HOW-R-U? with transition into business as usual across both organizations. Recipients reported that telephone calls had a positive impact on their lives, whereas volunteers reported enjoyment of supporting others. Several challenges were identified, namely in program reach and fidelity. Background and Objectives Cannabis use among aging Americans continues to increase. We examine correlates of cannabis use including attitudes, state of residence, health status, and service use. Research Design and Methods Using the 2018 Health and Retirement Study Cannabis module completed by 1,372 respondents aged 50 and older, we distinguished current cannabis users from those who have never used or have some prior use. We linked 2018 and 2016 core HRS data and used multinomial regressions to identify associations among current use, attitudes, place of residence, as well as current (2018) and past (2016) medical conditions, pain, and sleep issues. We also examined associations among cannabis use, hospital stays, and outpatient medical visits. Results Past-year cannabis use reached 10.3% among aging Americans. Attitudes toward cannabis have changed over time with 4 of 5 survey respondents currently holding a favorable attitude. Attitude and state of residence were associated with current use. Cannabis users reported higher levels of pain, were more likely to use prescription opioids, and report activity limitations in both 2016 and 2018. Associations between cannabis use and sleep issues or concurrent healthcare use were not observed. Discussion and Implications Changing attitudes and state legalization appear important for late middle-aged and older persons, and as many as 1 of every 5 persons over 50 may be using cannabis by 2030. Cannabis use among aging Americans warrants increased attention from care providers, program administrators, and policymakers, especially as a prevention or harm reduction strategy relative to prescription opioids. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the factors associated with vision impairment (VI), age-related eye disease (ARED), and frequency of eye examinations among older adults. Methods: A cross-sectional study (N = 166) was designed to identify barriers in vision and eye care services among adults 50 years and older in four counties in Appalachian Tennessee. Surveys were administered in March 2023. Simple and multiple logistic regression analyses were used to determine the risk factors of VI and ARED and the frequency of eye examinations. Results: In two out of the three regression models, predictors such as traveling ≥10 mi to an eye care provider, barriers to eye care, and a lack of exposure to eye health information emerged as significant factors. Individuals who traveled ≥10 mi to an eye care provider were more than twice as likely than individuals who traveled shorter distances to have VI and not maintain routine eye care (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] 2.69, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.08-6.75; AOR 2.82, 95% CI 1.05-7.55, respectively). Reporting barriers to eye care doubled the odds of ARED (AOR 2.33, 95% CI 1.02-5.34) and substantially increased the odds of reporting a 3-year or longer interval since the last eye examination (AOR 7.45, 95% CI 1.85-29.96) compared with having no barriers to eye care. Moreover, limited exposure to eye health information tripled the odds of VI (AOR 3.26, 95% CI 1.15-9.24) and not maintaining routine eye care (AOR 3.07, 95% CI 0.97-9.70) compared with more exposure to eye health information. As the U.S. population ages, park and recreation (P&R) professionals face increasing demand to provide age-appropriate and health-promoting programming for older adults. Recent qualitative research suggests older adults are interested in participating in sport programs tailored to their age group. Using socioecological theory as the guiding framework, and leisure constraint theory specifically, the current study explored participation and interest in recreational sport among older adults across the U.S. and their perceptions of how local P&R agencies currently meet, or fail to meet, their needs. Data, collected in 2019 via a nationwide online survey completed by 1,203 adults aged 50 and over, provided insights into the current population of older adults who are diverse in terms of health status, amount of discretionary time, and interest/experience with sport. Although most participants suggested they do not regularly participate in recreational sport, approximately half indicated they would be interested to try a new sport if opportunities were available, and they are motivated by health benefits, social opportunities, and enjoyment of recreational sport. Sports with the most interest were golf, pickleball, and softball. Additionally, participants expressed interest in bowling, hiking, tennis, volleyball, and swimming. Unfortunately, less than 20% of participants indicated they were satisfied or highly satisfied with the sport opportunities for older adults available through their local P&R department. Related to constraints, participants reported that constraints hindering their participation in recreational sport include physical or health-related factors (e.g., not being in good enough shape, not having the sport-related skills), lack of companions with whom to participate, lack of awareness of opportunities, lack of access to fields/facilities, and cost. The findings also relate to leisure facilitators within the constraint negotiation model, and suggests P&R agencies can facilitate sport participation among older adults by promoting the health, social, and fun aspects of participation; offering opportunities targeted at beginners with no skill/ experience required; ensuring programs are age-specific and modified to reduce risk of injury; facilitating introductions among players or providing opportunities for individuals to join teams; ensuring that low-cost options exist, and increasing awareness among older adults through channels effective for this age group (e.g., personal invitation, Facebook). The International Classification of Diseases, 11th edition (ICD-11) adopted a fully dimensional model of personality disorder. The Personality Inventory for ICD-11 (PiCD) and Informant-Personality Inventory for ICD-11 (IPiC) were developed to assess the ICD-11 trait model, and the PiCD has since received significant validation support. However, there has only been one prior study of longitudinal predictive validity of the PiCD, two relatively short test–retest reliability studies of the PiCD, and no prior longitudinal tests of the IPiC. Longitudinal psychometric support for psychological assessment measures is essential. The present study provides a longer, larger, 2-year psychometric validation test of the PiCD and IPiC. Participants (N = 711) and their informants (N = 569) were recruited in the St. Louis Personality and Aging Network. The results demonstrated strong 2-year retest reliability for the PiCD and IPiC, as well as mean-level stability. Additionally, we explored the relationships between the PiCD and IPiC and important life outcome measures (depressive symptoms, satisfaction with life, and health status). The analysis revealed several significant associations between PiCD and IPiC scales and the outcome variables across time. Further, the PiCD Negative Affectivity and IPiC Detachment scales demonstrated incremental validity over each other and the outcome variables at Wave 1 in the prediction of depressive symptoms and satisfaction with life, respectively. The findings provide essential longitudinal test–retest reliability and predictive validity support for the PiCD and IPiC. Public Significance Statement: This 2-year study on the Personality Inventory for ICD-11 (PiCD) and Informant-Personality Inventory for ICD-11 (IPiC) highlights robust retest reliability for both scales in a sample of older community adults. Evidence is also found for mean-level stability and associations between the scales and depressive symptoms, satisfaction with life, and health status. Background: Older adults have been found to internalize stigma from society and this has been linked to several variables including social support, coping, psychological distress, and mental well-being. However, there is a dearth of research on how these variables interact with each other to impact the life of older adults. Aims: This study employed path analysis to explore social support and coping as boundary conditions and underlying mechanisms in the link between internalized stigma, psychological distress, and mental well-being, among older adults in Ghana. Method: Using a cross-sectional design, the study recruited 167 older adults who responded to standardized questionnaires including The Internalized Stigma of Mental Illness scale, Multidimensional Perceived Social Support Scale, The Brief Coping Inventory, Kessler Distress Scale, and the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale, to determine levels of internalized stigma, social support, coping strategies, psychological distress, and mental well-being, respectively. Results: The findings revealed that at low levels of social support, there is a significant and positive correlation between internalized stigma and mental well-being (β = −.36, SE = 0.17, p <.001). Path analysis showed that the relationship between internalized stigma and mental well-being was fully mediated by problem-focused coping (β =.11, p =. 001, 95% CI [0.04, 0.21]), but not psychological distress. Problem-focused coping was also found to have a significant positive correlation with mental well-being but no significant correlation with psychological distress. Conversely, avoidant-focused coping was found to have a significant positive correlation with psychological distress and a significant negative correlation with mental well-being. Conclusions: This study revealed the importance of social support and coping to attaining mental well-being among older adults. This study provides insights into the development of tailored interventions aimed at improving social support and problem-focused coping among older Ghanaian adults facing internalized stigma, and it also establishes a base for future research. Purpose: This study aimed to explore the association of cognitive function and process- as well product-oriented outcomes of object control skills (OCS) in boys, younger and older men. Methods: A total of 77 male participants took part in this study, including 35 primary school children (9.04 ± 0.53 years), 22 younger adults (23.5 ± 2.34 years), and 20 older adults (69.5 ± 4.43 years). We assessed the process-oriented performance of throwing, kicking, and catching performance using the component approach. For the product-oriented performance, throwing and kicking velocity was recorded with a STALKER SOLO 2.0 radar gun. For catching, the number of caught balls was assessed. Cognitive function was evaluated using the Trail-Making-Test (TMT) one day later. Results: Younger adults performed better in both domains than the other two groups. The results of the children and older adults were comparable in the motor and cognitive domains. However, the older adults yielded significantly better results for the process-oriented catching and product-oriented throwing performances. Moderate to strong correlations exist between OCS- and TMT performance, with significant correlations predominantly between product-oriented OCS results and TMT in children. Conclusion: The results of both domains support a hypothetical lifespan developmental trajectory with a progression from childhood to younger adult age and a degression in older adults. Furthermore, our results suggest that the suspected relationship between motor and cognitive function depends on age, the analyzed cognitive and motor skills, and the applied methodological approach (process-oriented vs. product-oriented). The built environment is increasingly recognized as being associated with late-life loneliness. However, the pathway remains understudied. This study investigated the mediating effects of productive engagement in relationships between the built environment and loneliness. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of data from 4,409 community-dwelling people aged 65 years and above in China. We employed the Chinese version of the De Jong Gierveld Loneliness Scale to assess loneliness. The built environment comprises residential density, street connectivity, park-based and vegetation-based green space, land use mix, and the number of and distance to the nearest recreational, health, shopping and community services within 300-meter and 500-meter buffer areas. Structural equation modeling was used. Only green space (parks) had a direct effect on loneliness. Residential density and green space (parks) had an indirect effect on loneliness through volunteering. The number of recreational services had an indirect effect on loneliness through recreational and sporting activities, although distance to the nearest recreational services did not. All the significant results were only found within 300-meter rather than 500-meter buffers. Our findings have implications for environmental gerontology theory and practice. Providing more green space and recreational services can significantly improve older adults' helping behavior, social activities and sporting activities, which can further reduce older adults' loneliness. Patient-family member dyads experience transitions through illness as an interdependent team. This study measures the association of depression, anxiety, and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of older adult primary care patient-family member dyads. Baseline data from 1,808 patient-family member dyads enrolled in a trial testing early detection of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias in primary care. Actor-Partner Independence Model was used to analyze dyadic relationships between patients' and family members' depression (PHQ-9), anxiety (GAD-7), and HRQOL (SF-36 Physical Component Summary score and Mental Component Summary score). Family member mean (SD) age is 64.2 (13) years; 32.2% male; 84.6% White; and 64.8% being the patient's spouse/partner. Patient mean (SD) age is 73.7 (5.7) years; 47% male; and 85.1% White. For HRQOL, there were significant actor effects for patient and family member depression alone and depression and anxiety together on their own HRQOL (p < 0.001). There were significant partner effects where family member depression combined with anxiety was associated with the patient's physical component summary score of the SF-36 (p = 0.010), and where the family member's anxiety alone was associated with the patient's mental component summary score of the SF-36 (p = 0.031). This study examined education, partnership status, and the moderating role of the lockdown period on social connectedness during the COVID-19 pandemic in a sample of urban African-American older adults. Five hundred thirty-four African-American adults living in Detroit (91.0% female, Mage = 74.53) reported demographic information pre-pandemic and answered one social connectedness questionnaire between April and December 2020. Participants interviewed after the lockdown (post-June 2020) reported more loneliness than those interviewed during the lockdown (April–June, 2020). Married/partnered participants reported less loneliness and social isolation. Loneliness did not differ between those with high education levels interviewed during the lockdown compared to post-lockdown. However, among individuals with low education levels, those interviewed after the lockdown reported more loneliness than those interviewed during the lockdown period. Our findings suggest partnership status is associated with more social connectedness during the pandemic and education accentuates the effects of forced isolation related to loneliness among urban African-American older adults.
