Emergency Communication Systems (ECS) are network-based systems that may enable people to exchange information during crises and physical disasters when basic communication options have collapsed. They may be used to restore communication in off-grid areas or even when normal telecommunication networks have failed. These systems may use technologies such as Low-Power Wide-Area(LPWAN) and Software-Defined Wide Area Networks (SD-WAN), which can be specialized as software applications and Internet of Things (IoT) platforms. In this article, we present a comprehensive discussion of the existing ECS use cases and current research directions regarding the use of unconventional and hybrid methods for establishing communication between a specific site and the outside world. The ECS system proposed and simulated in this article consists of an autonomous wireless 4G/LTE base station and a LoRa network utilizing a hybrid IoT communication platform combining LPWAN and SD-WAN technologies. The LoRa-based wireless network was simulated using Network Simulator 3 (NS3), referring basically to firm and sufficient data transfer between an appropriate gateway and LP-WAN sensor nodes to provide trustworthy communications. The proposed scheme provided efficient data transfer posing low data losses by optimizing the installation of the gateway within the premises, while the SD-WAN scheme that was simulated using the MATLAB simulator and LTE Toolbox in conjunction with an ADALM PLUTO SDR device proved to be an outstanding alternative communication solution as well. Its performance was measured after recombining all received data blocks, leading to a beneficial proposal to researchers and practitioners regarding the benefits of using an on-premises IoT communication platform.

This paper deals with the optimal sizing of islanded microgrids (MGs), which use diesel generators to supply energy in off-grid areas. The MG under study integrates photovoltaic (PV) and diesel generation, a battery energy storage System (BESS), and an inverter for the connection between AC and DC voltage buses. Levelised cost of energy (LCOE) and annual system cost (ASC) are considered economic indicators, while the loss of power supply probability (LPSP) is used as a reliability indicator. Fiscal incentives such as the tax benefits and accelerated depreciation applied in Colombia are considered for the optimally sizing of each MG element. Solar measurements were taken at a weather station located in the main campus of Universidad de Antioquia in Medellin, Colombia at a latitude of 6.10 and longitude of −75.38. The objective function is the minimization of the total energy delivered from the power sources that successfully meets the load. The model was implemented in Python programming language considering several scenarios. Two cases were evaluated: the first one considered PV panels, a BESS and a diesel generator, while the second one only considered PV panels and a BESS. The option that does not include the diesel generator turned out to be the most expensive, since additional PV and BESS resources are required to meet the load profile. Vaccines are the only currently available effective means to protect people from COVID-19 and reach herd immunity that restricts further spread of the disease. Vaccines require to be maintained in a cold chain which needs continuous electric power. While even the cities and large townships in the Indian power grid suffer from frequent power outages, a large number of areas are out of the grid and do not have the benefits of electric power. The poor and agrarian communities living in these areas need to be provided with vaccines as much as the urban populations that are being currently served. There are cellphone towers everywhere now, even in the off-grid areas. These towers have excess power which can be harnessed to run the cold chain in the off-grid places, as is being done in some African countries and Myanmar. The background, need and modalities for using power from the cellphone towers to run the vaccine cold chain in the off-grid areas, in the interests of rendering social justice, are discussed in this article. The burning of biomass in a traditional cookstove has led to significant particulate emissions and does not utilize the biomass efficiently. A forced draft biomass cookstove can reduce polluting emissions as compared to a traditional cookstove that is being used in developing countries. But, to achieve a cleaner combustion, it is necessary for the household to be connected with an electric supply to run the small dc-fan of such forced draft cookstoves. Thus, a thermoelectric generator (TEG) in conjunction with a biomass cookstove has been developed and deployed for electricity generation. The TEG technology deployed in a cookstove helps to run a small dc-fan even in off-grid areas. Two novel electrical circuit topologies with a TEG are presented here for the efficient power generation and clean cooking. Different types of commercially available thermoelectric generators were tested during the design & development process to obtain the required output. In addition to clean cooking, other functions such as lighting and battery charging (or mobile phone battery charging) are also available according to the user's interest and price sensitivity. Abstract: This paper presents the results of an experimental study of a PV/diesel hybrid system without storage. Experimental results show that the sizing of a PV/diesel hybrid system by taking into account the solar radiation and the load/demand profile of a typical area may lead the diesel generator to operate near its optimal point (70–80% of its nominal power). The present paper shows that for a reliability of a PV/diesel hybrid system, the rated power of the diesel generator should be equal to the peak load. By the way, it has been verified through this study that the functioning of a PV/diesel hybrid system is efficient for higher load and higher solar radiation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
