During vitrification of radioactive wastes, excessive foaming reduces processing rates within melters by hindering heat transfer from the molten glass pool to the reacting melter feed. Formulations of low‐activity waste (LAW) melter feeds, for vitrification at the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant at the Hanford Site, conventionally include the addition of sucrose to mitigate excessive foaming by hastening the denitration process. However, incomplete combustion of sucrose produces organics such as acetonitrile (C2H3N) that may exceed bounding limits of downstream effluent treatment facilities. Using boron nitride (BN) as an alternate reductant to sucrose, in a representative LAW melter feed reduced C2H3N production by 90% by preventing the low‐temperature sucrose–nitrate reactions. Furthermore, foaming was suppressed due to the higher decomposition temperature of BN than H3BO3 meaning a delayed reaction of a large fraction of boron with the transient glass‐forming melt until above the foam onset temperature, thus reducing the quantity and viscosity of the connected melt and trapping less gas in the foam layer. This study proposes a probabilistic quantification technique that applies an expert inference method to warn of the risk of a fire developing into a thermal runaway when a lithium-ion battery fire occurs. Existing methods have the shortcomings of low prediction accuracy and delayed responses because they determine a fire only by detecting the temperature rise and smoke in a lithium-ion battery to initiate extinguishing activities. To overcome such shortcomings, this study proposes a method to probabilistically calculate the risk of thermal runaway in advance by detecting the amount of off-gases generated in the venting stage before thermal runaway begins. This method has the advantage of quantifying the probability of a fire in advance by applying an expert inference method based on a combination of off-gas amounts, while maintaining high reliability even when the sensor fails. To verify the validity of the risk probability design, problems with the temperature and off-gas increase/decrease data were derived under four SOC conditions in actual lithium-ion batteries. Through the foregoing, it was confirmed that the risk probability can be accurately presented even in situations where the detection sensor malfunctions by applying an expert inference method to calculate the risk probability complexly. Accurate estimations of the concentrations of soluble compounds are crucial for optimizing bioprocesses involving Escherichia coli (E. coli). This study proposes a hybrid model structure that leverages off-gas analysis data and physiological parameters, including the average biomass age and specific growth rate, to estimate soluble compounds such as acetate and glutamate in fed-batch cultivations We used a hybrid recurrent neural network to establish the relationships between these parameters. To enhance the precision of the estimates, the model incorporates ensemble averaging and information gain. Ensemble averaging combines varying model inputs, leading to more robust representations of the underlying dynamics in E. coli bioprocesses. Our hybrid model estimates acetates with 1% and 8% system precision using data from the first site and the second site at GSK plc, respectively. Using the data from the second site, the precision of the approach for other solutes was as fallows: isoleucine −8%, lactate and glutamate −9%, and a 13% error for glutamine., These results, demonstrate its practical potential. Ferrochrome (FeCr) is the main source of virgin chromium (Cr) units used in modern-day chromium (Cr) containing alloys. The vast majority of produced Cr is used during the production of stainless steel, which owes its corrosion resistance mainly to the presence of Cr. In turn, stainless steel is mainly produced from Cr-containing scrap metal and FeCr, which is a relatively crude alloy between iron (Fe) and Cr. The production of FeCr is an energy and material-intensive process, and a relatively wide variety of by-products, typically classified as waste materials by the FeCr industry, are created during FeCr production. The type and extent of waste generation are dictated by the smelting route used and the management practices thereof employed by a specific smelter. In some cases, waste management of hazardous and non-hazardous materials may be classified as insufficient. Hazardous materials, such as hexavalent Cr, i.e., Cr(VI), -containing wastes, are only partially mitigated. Additionally, energy-containing wastes, such as carbon monoxide (CO)-rich off-gas, are typically discarded, and energy-invested materials, such as fine oxidative sintered chromite, are either stockpiled or sold as ordinary chromite. In cases where low-value containing wastes are generated, such as rejects from ore beneficiation processes, consistent and efficient processes are either difficult to employ or the return on investment of such processes is not economically viable. More so, the development of less carbon (C)-intensive (e.g., partial replacement of C reductants) and low-temperature pellet curing processes are currently not considered by the South African FeCr smelting industry. The reasoning for this is mainly due to increased operation costs (if improved waste management were to be implemented/higher cost reductants were used) and a lack of research initiatives. These reasons result in the stagnation of technologies. From an environmental point of view, smelting industries are pressured to reduce C emissions. An attractive approach for removing oxygen from the target metal oxides, and the mitigation of gaseous C, is by using hydrogen as a reductant. By doing so, water vapor is the only by-product. It is however expected that stable metal oxides, such as the Cr-oxide present in chromite, will be significantly more resistive to gaseous hydrogen-based reduction when compared to Fe-oxides. In this review, the various processes currently used by the South African FeCr industry are summarized in detail, and the waste materials per process step are identified. The limitations of current waste management regimes and possible alternative routes are discussed where applicable. Various management regimes are identified that could be improved, i.e., by utilizing the energy associated with CO-rich off-gas combustion, employing a low-temperature alternative chromite pelletization process, and considering the potential of hydrogen as a chromite reductant. Thermal plasma is a promising technology widely used in materials processing and waste treatment due to its unique properties including high temperature, high energy density, high chemical activity, and high quench rate. Air-plasma is preferentially used because air is of low price as plasma gas. The content of NOx in off-gas from air-plasma was determined using a gas analyzer, and a treatment unit was designed for the green air-plasma process. Results show that the concentration of NOx in off-gas from air-plasma was 2,489 and 9,112 ppm when the plasma input power was 50 and 150 kW, respectively. O2 in the off-gas would act as an oxidant to promote NOx absorption; thus, alkali absorption method was directly used for the treatment of the present off-gas from air-plasma. The absorption efficiency could be increased to 62.2% when additional O2 was provided into the off-gas to change its O2 content from 20% to 50%. The absorption rate was estimated based on the experimental data and a multistage absorption unit design, which could be reduced below 100 ppm and meet the emission standard. This article presents the feasibility of thermal plasma off-gas purification, so as to truly realize the green plasma process.

The reprocessing used nuclear fuel (UNF) releases volatile fission and activation products, including 129I, into the off-gas of a processing plant. Mitigation of the release of vapor phase radionuclides is necessary for meeting regulatory requirements in the United States and other countries. In an aqueous reprocessing plant, volatile radioiodine could be present in several forms, depending on the chemistry of the process used. Inorganic iodine will be the predominate species in any shearing or voloxidation pretreatment off-gas and dissolver off-gas (DOG). Organic iodides such as CH3I, C4H9I, and C12H25I have been proposed to be generated during solvent extraction; thus, these species must be captured from the vessel off-gas (VOG). The abatement of inorganic and organic iodide species to meet United States regulatory requirements has been demonstrated in laboratory experiments using Ag-based solid sorbents. The data presented in this paper includes the effect of gas composition (e.g., the presence of water vapor and NOx), iodine speciation (I2, CH3I, C4H9I, C12H25I), and sorbent bed parameters (e.g., temperature, sorbent age) on complete iodine capture on Ag-mordenite in an aqueous reprocessing plant.

New lead-vanadate based sorbents were synthesized with the aim to entrap and confine gaseous iodine in off-gas streams coming from reprocessing facilities of spent nuclear fuel. Their synthesis relies on the shaping of a lead-vanadate, lead sulfide and alginic acid mix as millimetric beads. These beads were calcined between 220°C and 500°C to remove organic alginic compounds template. However, according to the calcination temperature, lead sulfide could be partially oxidized, limiting iodine loading capacity. A compromise temperature between 290°C and 350°C was found to remove most of the alginic acid template and avoiding lead sulfide oxidation. These sorbents were tested for iodine trapping in static conditions at 60°C. They performed well with a sorption capacity up to 155 mg.g−1 by forming PbI2. Furthermore, these iodine-loaded sorbents could be easily converted into an iodine-containing lead-vanadate apatite matrix by spark plasma sintering. A dense sample was produced for a sintering temperature of 500°C under 70 MPa. Such a material could be suitable for radioactive iodine conditioning in deep geological disposal. Finally, lead-vanadate sorbents could provide an easy way to entrap and confine radioactive iodine from off-gas streams into a durable material within a few steps.

This study with surrogate materials shows that laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a robust tool with promising capability toward monitoring gaseous (Xe and Kr) and aerosol (Cs and Rb) species in an off-gas stream from a molten salt reactor (MSR). MSRs will continually evolve fission products into the cover gas flowing across the reactor headspace. The cover gas entrains Xe and Kr gases, along with aerosol particles, before passing into an off-gas treatment system. Univariate models of Xe and Kr peaks showed a strong correlation to concentration indicated by their coefficients of determination of 0.983 and 0.997, respectively. Multivariate models were built for all four analytes using partial least squares regression coupled with preprocessing steps including normalization, trimming, and/or genetic algorithm derived filters. The models were evaluated by predicting the concentrations of the analytes in four validation samples, in which all calibration models were successfully validated at a confidence interval of 99.9%. Lastly, pressure controllers were used to regulate the mass flow rate of Kr flowing into the measurement cell in sinusoidal and stepwise waveforms to test the real-time monitoring capabilities of the regression models. Both univariate and partial least squares Kr models were able to successfully quantify the gas concentration in the real-time evaluation. The root mean squared error of prediction (RMSEP) values for these real-time tests were calculated to be 0.051, 0.060, and 0.121 mol% demonstrating the measurement systems' capability to perform online monitoring with acceptable accuracy. To enable the deployment of molten salt reactor technology, the development of off-gas treatment systems and advanced monitoring tools capable of operating with high temperatures and radiation fields while delivering near real-time information is necessary. This study aims to fulfill this requirement and proposes laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) for monitoring molten salt aerosol streams. A sheath gas measuring method was developed to protect optical elements from aerosol particles and to ensure a relatively constant aerosol stream for measurement. An aqueous system was studied to demonstrate the utility of LIBS for monitoring possible fission products in an aerosol stream: Gd, Nd, and Sm up to 2000 parts per million (ppm). A calibration model was built using partial least squares (PLS) regression with five, six, and nine latent variables for Gd, Nd, and Sm, respectively. This calibration model successfully estimated the concentrations of three test samples, which were validated with inductively charged plasma optical emission spectroscopy measurements at a 99.9% confidence interval. To enhance these models, a genetic algorithm was used to filter the spectra before entering the PLS model, thereby limiting the spectral features being regressed to those with greater correlations to concentration. This allowed for the number of latent variables used in the PLS models to be reduced to four, three, and three for Gd, Nd, and Sm, respectively. Lastly, the genetic algorithm-filtered PLS models were used to predict the concentrations of the aerosol stream on a real-time dataset and resulted in a 73%, 18%, and 25% improvement in root mean squared error of prediction compared to the original PLS models developed. Nitrous oxide (N2O) gas transfer was studied in a full-scale process to correlate liquid phase N2O concentrations with gas phase N2O emissions and compare methods of determining the volumetric mass transfer coefficient, KLa. Off-gas and liquid phase monitoring were conducted at the Viikinmäki wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) over a two-week period using a novel method for simultaneous measurement of dissolved and off-gas N2O and O2 from the same location. KLa was calculated with three methods: empirically, based on aeration superficial velocity, from experimentally determined O2 KLa, and using a static value of best fit. The findings of this study indicated trends in local emitted N2O consistently matched trends in local dissolved N2O, but the magnitude of N2O emissions could not be accurately estimated without correction. After applying a static correction factor, the O2 method, using experimentally determined O2 KLa, provided the best N2O emission estimation over the data collection period. N2O emissions estimated using the O2 method had a root mean square error (RMSE) of 70.5 compared against measured concentrations ranging from 3 to 1,913 ppm and a maximum 28% error. The KLa value, and therefore the method of KLa determination, had a significant impact on estimated emissions.

A process technology is developed to recover the effective components in off-gas from the reactive system of hydroformylation of propylene. Methods This technology uses the process route of "dealdehyde-cryogenic separation-stabilization-distillation", i. e., firstly removing the heavy components such as butyraldehyde by distillation column and condensing the components above C3 into liquid by ammonia circulating cryogenic process, and then removing butyraldehyde, trace moisture and non-condensable gas by the stable system, and finally obtaining propylene and propane products by distillation process. Results After the commercial application of this technology, the design capacity of the off-gas effective components recovery unit is 17.72 X 10³ t/ a. The total recovery of propylene, propane and butyraldehyde is 14.28 X 10³ t/a on the basis of operation time of 8 400 hours per year, and their purities are all greater than or equal to 97.00wt%, their yields all exceed 95.0 % . Conclusions The actual values are better than the design ones after calibration. Compared with other units, this unit has the advantages of low energy consumption, no auxiliary material consumption, high yield and purity of products. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aeration systems often lack the efficiency to maintain a desired residual dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration in the tank in part because little consideration is given to the dynamic daily and seasonal loading conditions. Although advanced aeration controllers exist, the majority of plants have DO set points typically based on common practice and literature values rather than site‐specific conditions, which can result in DO set points higher than those necessary to meet treatment objectives. DO set point reduction strategies have primarily been proposed through either static or dynamic simulations. In this study, the substantial improvements associated with DO set point reduction are demonstrated at full scale. A yearlong characterization of full‐scale aeration dynamics captured the effect of diurnal and seasonal fluctuations on oxygen transfer and energy demand and so facilitated the estimation of the potential savings of DO reduction strategies. Full‐scale validation provided direct evidence of DO reduction strategies inducing an overall enhancement of oxygen transfer efficiency along the different bioreactors, while confirming that energy savings as high as 20% were feasible. This study quantifies the influence of oxygen transfer efficiency on operating choices and site‐specific conditions (control strategy, loading conditions, and influent flow variability). Practitioner points: We quantified the energy reduction and cost savings associated with a DO reduction in an aeration tank.For each 0.2 mg/L of DO decreased, the average power demand reduction per unit water treated exceeded 17%.Field measurements of dynamic alpha values eliminate the uncertainty in estimating aeration energy and cost savings from DO variations. Increasingly demanding environmental regulations are forcing companies to reduce their impacts caused by their activity while defending the economic viability of their manufacturing processes, especially energy and carbon-intensive ones. Therefore, these challenges must be addressed by posing optimization problems that involve several objectives simultaneously, corresponding to different conditions, and often conflicting between. In this study, the residual gases of an integral steel factory were evaluated and modeled with the goal of developing an optimization problem considering two opposing objectives: CO2 emissions and profit. The problem was first approached in a mono-objective manner, optimizing profit through Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP), and then was extended to a bi-objective problem solved by means of the ε-constraint method, to find the Pareto front relating profit and CO2 emissions. The results show that multiobjective optimization is a very valuable resource for plant managers’ decision-making processes. The model makes it possible to identify inflection points from which the level of emissions would increase disproportionately. It gives priority to the consumption of less polluting fuels. The model also makes it possible to make the most of temporary buffers such as the gas holders, adapting to the hourly price of the electricity market. By applying this method, CO2 emissions decrease by more than 3%, and profit amounts up to 14.8% compared to a regular case under normal operating conditions. The sensitivity analysis of the CO2 price and CO2 constraints is also performed.

Abstract Molten salt reactors (MSRs) are being considered as one of the potential nuclear options to meet future energy demands. While the MSR designs are drastically different from the more traditional light water reactor, many of the waste streams are similar between the concepts. The purpose of this paper is to outline strategies for the treatment and processing of MSR-type wastes from concepts of reconditioning and recycle of certain components to partitioning and direct immobilization of other waste components. To help bridge science and technology gaps, knowledge gained from similar efforts such as pyroprocessing of Experimental Breeder Reactor II salt wastes can be leveraged to develop concept-to-disposition pathways. • A transport model for 131I in MSRE was developed by combining the noble metal migration mechanism with a helium bubble distribution model. • Yield evaluation of a production method based on 131I extraction from a molten salt reactor. • Stability and economics of the 131I production method based on molten salt reactor off-gas extraction were evaluated. Isotope extraction methods based on molten salt reactor off-gas treatments can provide a new solution for the shortage of medical isotopes. Current research work involves only static estimation, which does not consider the influence of the variation of parameters brought about by the actual reactor operation and may lead to inaccurate estimation of the yield and cooling time. In this work, a model of species migration is developed, and a corresponding program based on Mathematica is constructed to estimate the above problem. Results reveal 2.50 TBq of 131I was delivered to the off-gas system after 50 days of routine operation. This accounts for only 0.041 % of the total 131I in the reactor, which is sufficient to support 4,000 doses of hyperthyroidism treatment. Compared to the extraction based on the main loop salt, 133I remains the main radioactive impurity and product would meet the medical limit for radioactivity impurity after 8 days of cooling. Changes in fuel composition due to normal reactor operation have a small impact on isotope production. The power and flow rate variations due to peak load operation and the corresponding changes in helium bubble surface area due to temperature–pressure fluctuations have essentially no effect on the cooling time of the product but partially affect the production in the off-gas system. Bubble removal efficiency has a large perturbation on the results, but this needs to be investigated in the future. The stability of the cooling time indicates that nuclide production can follow an established scheme, suggesting that a molten salt reactor tail gas-based production scheme is stable and a promising production method. Off-gas is one of the by-products of the steelmaking process. Its potential energy can be transformed into heat and electricity by means of cogeneration. A case study using a coke oven and Linz–Donawitz converter gas is presented. This work addresses the gas allocation problem for a cogeneration system producing steam and electricity. In the studied facility, located in northern Spain, the annual production of the plant requires 95,000 MWh of electrical energy and 525,000 MWh of thermal energy. The installed electrical and thermal power is 20.4 MW and 81 MW, respectively. A mixed integer linear programming model is built to optimize gas allocation, thus maximizing its benefits. This model is applied to a 24-h scenario with real data from the plant, where gas allocation decision-making was performed by the plant operators. Application of the model generated profit in a scenario where there were losses, increasing benefits by 16.9%. A sensitivity analysis is also performed. The proposed model is useful not only from the perspective of daily plant operation but also as a tool to simulate different design scenarios, such as the capacity of gasholders.
