Abstract

This paper presents a contrastive French-Polish semantic and syntactic analysis of nominal constructions with support verbs. The research is directly inspired by Gaston Gross's book Systematic description of support verbs (forthcoming). What has been studied in particular is the French support verbs of the object class in order to find their Polish equivalents. Such an analysis reveals two major difficulties: at times, the lack of equivalent nominal construction in Polish, and often, the lower number of support verbs in Polish compared to French, which renders Polish as being a less "rich" language, that is, more semantically generalizing one. The search for adequate support verbs in Polish requires an in-depth semantic analysis to grasp the differences in meaning and usage. To do this, the methodology of grammar based on combinatorial semantics has been applied aided by a study of aspectual senses and phraseology linked to support verbs in both the languages. Abstract

This paper proposes a deep learning algorithm that can improve pill identification performance using limited training data. In general, when individual pills are detected in multiple pill images, the algorithm uses multiple pill images from the learning stage. However, when there is an increase in the number of pill types to be identified, the pill combinations in an image increase exponentially. To detect individual pills in an image that contains multiple pills, we first propose an effective database expansion method for a single pill. Then, the expanded training data are used to improve the detection performance. Our proposed method shows higher performance improvement than the existing algorithms despite the limited imaging and data set size. Our proposed method will help minimize problems, such as loss of productivity and human error, which occur while inspecting dispensed pills.

The paper focuses on the problem of the classification of metonymy. Presenting various classifications of metonymy, the author wonders how they are useful for the purpose of automatic translation. The discussion undertaken in the paper concerns the classification proposed by Taouffic Massoussi, who in his doctoral dissertation has presented a very extensive and detailed classification of metonymy carried out from the point of view of automatic translation. Abstract

The present paper aims at presenting a short study of the prefixed forms of the Polish verb pić ('to drink') (napić, wypić, popić, przepić, opić, zapić, etc.) and their French equivalents found in two parallel corpora: Glosbe and Reverso Context. In the fi rst part, selected theoretical approaches concerning the verbal prefixation in Polish are discussed, with particular attention to the hypothesis of "perfective hypercategory" by Włodarczyk and Włodarczyk (2001b). The second part focuses on the results of the contrastive Polish-French analysis. The research is carried out in the general framework of the Aktionsarten theory and tries to discover by which linguistic means (grammatical and/or lexical) the French language expresses different semantic values conveyed by the Polish prefixes. The results of the analysis are appropriately formalized according to the principles of the object-oriented approach by Banyś (2002a, b), i.e. described by the syntactic-semantic schemes (which, after several changes of specification, can be applied in the machine translation programs). The purpose of the investigation is, therefore, twofold: theoretical, since it is the matter of discovering certain relations between two languages expressing differently a given linguistic phenomenon, and practice, which consists in formulating interlinguistic correspondence rules for the purpose of the Polish-French translation.
