To enhance pomegranate production on marginal gravelly lands, standardized planting techniques were evaluated in an 8-year-old orchard. Trenching, wider pit excavation, pit digging, and auger digs with dimensions of 1 and 2 m were employed. Utilizing native soil from barren land, with or without spent wash, and mixing it with black soil up to 1 m deep, growth parameters, leaf nutrients, fruit production, and fruit quality were assessed. The trench and wider pit methods outperformed others, yielding greater above-ground biomass (>70.3 kg tree−1), root biomass (>24.5 kg, tree−1), and cross-sectional area (>3.30 m2 tree−1). These methods also produced longer roots (>4.0 m tree−1) and higher leaf phosphorus (>0.28%) and potassium (>1.81%) levels, fruit juice content (>48.50%), and total soluble solids (>16.05°) compared to other planting methods. This resulted in higher and more sustainable fruit yield production under the trench and wider pit planting methods (>7.21 t ha−1). Similarly, the native and black soil mixture produced healthy fruit trees, improved fruit quality, and sustainably higher fruit yield over the native soil alone. In summary, the trench and wider pit methods (2–3 m3), combined with a soil mixture, are recommended for sustainable, high-quality fruit production in shallow gravelly terrains, thereby improving food security and the livelihoods of farmers in arid regions. Sand nourishments and groynes as coastal protection measures (CPM) address similar challenges on sandy coasts but take different approaches: while groynes are intended to reduce alongshore sediment transport and erosion, nourishments add new sediment to the system to compensate for erosion. The aim of this study is to compare the ecological effects of such measures on the vegetation. To this end, nutrient analysis and botanical mappings were carried out on a site with installed groynes, a site where sand nourishments are regularly carried out, and a control site without any CPM. In addition to an increase in nutrient availability after the sand nourishment, significant changes in plant species diversity and composition were also measured. The number of higher plants, mosses, and lichen species was lower at the nourishment site. The opposite impacts were observed at the groyne site: an increase in sediment cover by higher plants and mosses and a distinct increase in lichen species. The results suggest that groynes lead to a stabilization of the coastal system and enable dense vegetation growth. In contrast, sand nourishments lead to nutrient input and unstable habitat conditions, attracting certain plant communities but preventing the establishment of ground-covering vegetation.

Given the rapid growth of the Cannabis industry, developing practices for producing young plants with limited genetic variation and efficient growth is crucial to achieving reliable and successful cultivation results. This study presents a multi-faceted experiment series analyzing propagation techniques for evaluating proficiency in the growth and development of Cannabis vegetative cuttings. This research encompasses various (1) soilless propagation methods including aeroponics, horticultural (phenolic) foam, and rockwool; (2) transplant timings; (3) aeroponic spray intervals; and (4) aeroponic reservoir nutrient concentrations, to elucidate their impact on rooting and growth parameters amongst two Cannabis cultivars. Aeroponics was as effective as, and in some cases more effective than, soilless propagation media for root development and plant growth. In aeroponic systems, continuous spray intervals, compared to intermittent, result in a better promotion of root initiation and plant growth. Moreover, raised nutrient concentrations in aeroponic propagation demonstrated greater rooting and growth. The effects of experimental treatment were dependent on the cultivar and sampling day. These findings offer valuable insights into how various propagation techniques and growth parameters can be tailored to enhance the production of vegetative cuttings. These results hold critical implications for cultivators intending to achieve premium harvests through efficient propagule methods and optimization strategies in the competitive Cannabis industry. Ultimately, our findings suggest that aeroponic propagation, compared to alternative soilless methods, is a rapid and efficient process for cultivating vegetative cuttings of Cannabis and offers sustainable advantages in resource conservation and preservation. Nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) are essential macronutrients that are crucial not only for maize growth and development, but also for crop yield and quality. The genetic basis of macronutrient dynamics and accumulation during grain filling in maize remains largely unknown. In this study, we evaluated grain N, P, and K concentrations in 206 recombinant inbred lines generated from a cross of DH1M and T877 at six time points after pollination. We then calculated conditional phenotypic values at different time intervals to explore the dynamic characteristics of the N, P, and K concentrations. Abundant phenotypic variations were observed in the concentrations and net changes of these nutrients. Unconditional quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping revealed 41 non-redundant QTLs, including 17, 16, and 14 for the N, P, and K concentrations, respectively. Conditional QTL mapping uncovered 39 non-redundant QTLs related to net changes in the N, P, and K concentrations. By combining QTL, gene expression, co-expression analysis, and comparative genomic data, we identified 44, 36, and 44 candidate genes for the N, P, and K concentrations, respectively, including GRMZM2G371058 encoding a Dof-type zinc finger DNA-binding family protein, which was associated with the N concentration, and GRMZM2G113967 encoding a CBL-interacting protein kinase, which was related to the K concentration. The results deepen our understanding of the genetic factors controlling N, P, and K accumulation during maize grain development and provide valuable genes for the genetic improvement of nutrient concentrations in maize.

A pot experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of seaweed, amino acid and nutrient solution on growth and physiological performance of Sudan grass growing under salinity stress. The experiment consisted of different levels of salinity stress 0 mM, 50 mM, 100 mM, 150 mM, 200 mM, and 250 mM and exogenous application of seaweed extract, amino acids and nutrients; control, soil application of seaweed extract, amino acids and nutrients and foliar application of seaweed extract, amino acids and nutrients. Soil application of seaweed, amino acid and nutrient solution was found best in ameliorating the toxic effect of salinity on root length, shoot fresh weight, root fresh weight, number of leaves, number of roots, number of tillers, leaf area, leaf width, leaf length, shoot dry weight and root dry weight. The same treatment also significantly improved in chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, total chlorophyll, carotenoids, proline, phosphate and sulphate contents. On the other hand, foliar spray of seaweed extract, amino acids and nutrients resulted in maximum phenolics, flavonoids, nitrates, shoot potassium and calcium as compared to control. Soil salinity caused by climate change is a major global issue, especially in regions like the Mediterranean basin. Most commercially cultivated horticultural species, including pepper, are considered to be salt sensitive. However, some underutilized genotypes exhibit high adaptability to adverse environmental conditions, without compromising yield. This study aimed to investigate the effects of salinity stress on the yield, nutrition, and fruit quality of four pepper landraces: JO 109 (Capsicum annuum var. grossum), JO 204 (Capsicum annuum var. grossum), JO 207 (Capsicum annuum var. grossum), and 'Florinis'. The California cultivar 'Yolo Wonder' and the commercial F1 hybrid 'Sammy RZ' were used as controls. The experiment was conducted in the greenhouse facilities of the Laboratory of Vegetable Production at the Agricultural University of Athens. Half of the plants were exposed to a nutrient solution containing NaCl at a concentration that could maintain the NaCl level in the rhizosphere at 30 mM (salt-treated plants), while the remaining plants were irrigated with a nutrient solution containing 0.5 mM NaCl (control plants). Yield and yield quality attributes, such as firmness, titratable acidity (TA), total soluble solids content (TSSC), fruit height, and diameter were recorded. The results revealed that the landraces were more tolerant to salinity than the commercial varieties 'Yolo Wonder' and 'Sammy RZ'. Alkali stress is a significant challenge across the globe which is posing serious threat to crop production and food security. This study was carried out to study the effect of different levels of alkali stress on growth and physiological traits of Leymus chinensis. The study was comprised of different levels of alkali stress; control (CK; 0 mmol·L-1), 25 and 50 mmol·L-1. The results showed that imposition of 50 mmol·L-1 alkali stress substantially reduced the photosynthetic capacity, relative water contents and accumulation of carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) in plant parts. Further, 50 mmol·L-1 alkali stress also reduced the above and below ground biomass, and severely inhibited the root growth. Moreover, increase in concentration of alkali stress inhibited clone components, tillering, tillering bud, and internode bud of Leymus chinensis. In conclusion the increasing concentration of alkali stress can reduce the growth and biomass production and nutrient accumulation of Leymus chinensis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Biofertilizers has potential to improve crop productivity in a sustainable manner yet their impact on forage crops yields and forage quality indices have not been extensively explored. In this study, the impact of different cropping patterns and fertilizer sources on the forage yield and quality of ajowan (Carum copticum L.), fenugreek (Trigonella foenum‐graecum L.), and pea (Pisum sativum L.) was investigated. The findings shed light on the importance of biofertilizer application as a sustainable solution for enhancing forage production and quality in agricultural systems. The experimental treatments involved six cropping patterns [ajowan monoculture, fenugreek monoculture, pea monoculture, intercropping of one row ajowan + one row fenugreek + one row pea (1:1:1), two rows ajowan + two rows fenugreek + two rows pea (2:2:2), and three rows ajowan + three rows fenugreek + three rows pea (3:3:3)] and five fertilizer sources [no fertilizer (control), 100% chemical fertilizer (CF), chemical fertilizer + humic acid (CF + HU), chemical fertilizer + biofertilizer (CF + BF), and humic acid + biofertilizer (HU + BF)]. The results revealed that the 2:2:2 intercrop fertilized with CF + BF had the highest N, P, and K concentrations for the three species. The monoculture systems with CF + BF produced the highest forage yields for ajowan (5492 kg/ha), fenugreek (3811 kg/ha), and pea (12,695 kg/ha). In addition, 2:2:2 intercrop fertilized with CF + BF produced the highest forage quality for all three species, decreasing the crude fiber, acid detergent fiber, and neutral detergent fiber contents and increasing forage ASH, dry matter intake, water‐soluble carbohydrates, and relative feed value. The 2:2:2 intercrop ratio combined with CF + BF application could be recommended to farmers as an eco‐friendly strategy (decreasing chemical fertilizer use) for improving forage productivity and quality in sustainable agricultural systems. The evaluation of the hydrography and biogeochemistry of the Adriatic Sea over the last century was summarized in this review to point out any changes in river runoff and provide an overview of the cause and effect of these trends on marine ecosystems. Although several rivers flow into the Adriatic, the most affected area is the northern Adriatic, where the Po River loads into the basin half of the total freshwater input, carrying river runoff and causing algal blooms and hypoxia phenomena. These fresh waters of the northern Adriatic flow predominantly along the entire western side, reaching the southernmost part of the basin up to the Mediterranean Sea. Here, and in the whole basin, variations in river runoff and nutrient concentration have been observed through the years. Starting from 1960 until the end of the century, an increase in nutrient discharge and phytoplankton activity was reported, with negative repercussions on local fisheries, species richness, and recreational activities within the basin. However, a recent decrease in river inflow has been observed along the coastal belt, which can trigger negative consequences for the food web of the marine ecosystem. These trends, more broadly, corroborate the vulnerability of the Adriatic Sea and stress the importance of implementing strategies for the defense of the relevant ecosystems within its confines. Broad leaf mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla King, Family: Meliaceae) is one of the best-known and most valuable tropical timber. It is almost unique silviculturally and occupies important position in the rural economy of India as a commercial plantation crop. This present study is mainly focused on temporal discrepancy of foliar nutrients and retranslocation of nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium and sulphur in S. macrophylla. The monthly variations in foliar nutrient concentrations and retranslocation prior to leaf fall were analyzed. The key problem in the cultivation of densely planted dwarf orchards is the removal of weeds—trees' competitors for habitat resources. There is an urgent need to look for ecological methods of weed control as an alternative to herbicides that are harmful to the environment. The use of living mulch (LM) in tree rows additionally improves soil quality but usually weakens tree growth and may reduce yield. The aim of this 11-year experiment was to assess the impact of the use of two different LMs in rows (Trifolium repens—Tr and Agrostis capillaris—Ac) on the growth, yield, and fruit quality of three pear cultivars on Quince S1 rootstock compared to herbicide fallow. The presence of LM did not significantly affect tree growth. There was no significant effect of either mulch on the cumulative yield. However, for the first 4–6 years, the yield was clearly lower than in the control, which changed in the later years of the experiment. When LMs were used, pear trees showed a significantly lower tendency to alternate fruiting. The average fruit weight was significantly lower in Tr, but the other parameters of external fruit quality did not differ significantly. Furthermore, a smaller share of ultra-small fruit was found with LM compared to the control. The LM did not significantly affect such parameters as the content of soluble solids, vitamin C, Ca, Mg, and P. The use of Ac in dwarf pear orchards with sowing in tree rows is recommended in the 2nd or 3rd year after planting at the earliest. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The present investigation was undertaken to assess the residual influence of organic materials and biofertilizers applied to rice and wheat on yield, nutrient status, and economics of succeeding mung bean in an organic cropping system. The field experiments were carried out on the research farm of IARI, New Delhi during crop cycles of 2006 to 2007 and 2007 to 2008 to study the effects of residual organic manures, crop residues, and biofertilizers applied to rice and wheat on the performance of succeeding mung bean. The experiment was laid out in a randomized block design with three replications. Treatments consisted of six combinations of different residual organic materials, and biofertilizers included residual farmyard manure (FYM) and vermicompost (VC) applied on nitrogen basis at 60 kg haâ1 to each rice and wheat crops, FYM + wheat and rice residues at 6 t haâ1 and mung bean residue at 3 t haâ1 in succeeding crops (CR), VC + CR, FYM + CR + biofertilizers (B), VC + CR + B, and control (no fertilizer applied). For biofertilizers, cellulolytic culture, phosphate-solubilizing bacteria and Rhizobium applied in mung bean. Results: Incorporation of crop residue significantly increased the grain yield of mung bean over residual of FYM and VC by 25.5% and 26.5%, respectively. The combinations of FYM + CR + B and VC + RR + B resulted in the highest increase growth and yield attributing characters of mung bean and increased grain yield of mung bean over the control by 47% and net return by 27%. Conclusions: The present study thus indicate that a combination of FYM + CR + B and VC + CR + B were economical for the nutrient need of mung bean in organic farming of rice-based cropping system.

Salinity is a major stress factor that compromises vegetable production in semi-arid climates such as the Mediterranean. The accumulation of salts in the soil can be attributed to limited water availability, which can be exacerbated by changes in rainfall patterns and rising temperatures. These factors can alter soil moisture levels and evaporation rates, ultimately leading to an increase in soil salinity, and, concomitantly, the extent to which crop yield is affected by salinity stress is considered cultivar-dependent. In contrast to tomato hybrids, tomato landraces often exhibit greater genetic diversity and resilience to environmental stresses, constituting valuable resources for breeding programs seeking to introduce new tolerance mechanisms. Therefore, in the present study, we investigated the effects of mild salinity stress on the growth, yield, and nutritional status of sixteen Mediterranean tomato landraces of all size types that had been pre-selected as salinity tolerant in previous screening trials. The experiment was carried out in the greenhouse facilities of the Laboratory of Vegetable Production at the Agricultural University of Athens. To induce salinity stress, plants were grown hydroponically and irrigated with a nutrient solution containing NaCl at a concentration that could maintain the NaCl level in the root zone at 30 mM, while the non-salt-treated plants were irrigated with a nutrient solution containing 0.5 mM NaCl. Various plant growth parameters, including dry matter content and fruit yield (measured by the number and weight of fruits per plant), were evaluated to assess the impact of salinity stress. In addition, the nutritional status of the plants was assessed by determining the concentrations of macro- and micronutrients in the leaves, roots, and fruit of the plants. The key results of this study reveal that cherry-type tomato landraces exhibit the highest tolerance to salinity stress, as the landraces 'Cherry-INRAE (1)', 'Cherry-INRAE (3)', and 'Cherry-INRAE (4)' did not experience a decrease in yield when exposed to salinity stress. However, larger landraces such as 'de Ramellet' also exhibit mechanisms conferring tolerance to salinity, as their yield was not compromised by the stress applied. The identified tolerant and resistant varieties could potentially be used in breeding programs to develop new varieties and hybrids that are better adapted to salinity-affected environments. The identification and utilization of tomato varieties that are adapted to salinity stress is an important strategy for promoting agriculture sustainability, particularly in semi-arid regions where salinity stress is a major challenge. The practice of cultivating crops in a controlled environment using a soilless culture method is seeing an increasing level of popularity. The aforementioned challenges include addressing climate change, combating pests and diseases, mitigating falling soil fertility, and ensuring constant production and quality. One of the potential crops that could be grown with such a method is soybean. Soybean cultivation in a controlled environment using soilless culture still needs more information, especially regarding nutrient solution management of certain soybean varieties. Thus, this study investigated the impact of nutrient concentrations and variety on soybean growth, yield, and chemical composition. This research was carried out in a plant growth chamber using expanded clay aggregate as a soilless substrate. The treatments were four nutrient concentrations: 0% (control), 50%, 100%, and 150%, and two different varieties: Martina and Johanna. The findings of this research revealed that there were significant differences in nutrient treatments on all parameters measured. Application of nutrient concentration at 50% resulted in the most profound root size for both varieties. Applying 100% nutrient concentration produced a higher 100-grain weight for the Johanna variety. Application of nutrient concentration at 150% resulted in the highest shoot weight and shoot:root ratio for both varieties, with varietal differences. Furthermore, applying nutrient concentration at 150% also produced the highest grain yield/pot, protein yield, and lipid yield for both varieties. Thus, the nutrient concentration between 100% and 150% gave a positive effect and can be applied for planting Martina and Johanna using this system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Changes in rainfall induced by climate change will likely influence the utilization of water resources and affect the nutrient cycle in plants in the water-limited desert steppe. In order to understand the response of nitrogen and phosphorus resorption characteristics of plant leaves to precipitation changes, this study compared the nitrogen (N) resorption efficiency, phosphorus (P) resorption efficiency and influencing factors of plants in a desert steppe through water treatment experiments. Methods: A 4-year field experiment was performed to examine the response and influencing factors of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus resorption efficiency of five dominant plants in Stipa breviflora desert steppe to simulated precipitation change in Inner Mongolia, with four simulated precipitation gradients including reducing water by 50%, natural precipitation, increasing water by 50%, increasing water by 100%. Results: Compared with natural precipitation, increasing water by 100% significantly increased soil moisture, and significantly increased the aboveground biomass of S. breviflora, C. songorica, A. frigida, decreased the N concentrations in green leaves of S. breviflora, Cleistogenes songorica, Artemisia frigida, Kochia prostrata, decreased the N concentrations in senesced leaves of C. songorica, decreased the P concentrations in green leaves of K. prostrata and Convolvulus ammannii, decreased the NRE of S. breviflora. NRE was significantly negatively correlated with N concentration in senesced leaves, and PRE was significantly negatively correlated with P concentration in senesced leaves. Conclusions: Increasing water indirectly reduces NRE by reducing plant leaf green leaves nitrogen concentration, and decreasing water indirectly reduces PRE by reducing soil moisture. Nanotechnology has developed materials that can increase food production while reducing the use of conventional fertilizers. In this study, the effect of two forms of application (foliar and drench) as well as covering or non-covering of the surface of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (nTiO2) with maltodextrin (MDX) at 1500 ppm was investigated on tomato plants. The results show that treatment of tomato with nTiO2 increased yield (+21%), while covering the surface of the NPs resulted in a further yield increase (+27%). Similar trends were observed in the dry weight of vegetative plant parts. Fruit firmness (+33%) and total soluble solids (+36%) were enhanced by MDX-covered nTiO2. Application of nTiO2 resulted in enhanced SPAD index, photosynthesis rate, NO3−, K, and Ca concentration in the petiole sap, whereas in the fruits there was an increase in P and K in MDX-covered nTiO2. Considering the dilution effect due to the higher fruit yield, N, P, Mg, Cu, and B increased in plants treated with nTiO2. Covering the surface with MDX resulted in an enhanced response to nTiO2, as fruit yield and quality increased compared to plants treated with non-covered nTiO2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Soilless cultivation systems in a controlled environment are increasingly being used due to several global issues such as climate change, pest and disease problems, declining soil fertility quality and limited agricultural land. Soybean is one of the potential crops that can be grown using the soilless planting system in a controlled environment. Therefore, a study was conducted to investigate the effect of nutrient concentrations on the early development of two soybean varieties. Four different nutrient concentrations (0%, 50%, 100% and 150%) were applied, and two soybean varieties (Martina and Johanna) were tested. This study was designed in a split-plot experimental design where the nutrient concentration was the main plot and the variety was the sub-plot. The data record was started after fertilization. The plant growth data were collected for five weeks. All the data were analyzed statistically using SPSS V.23 software. The results of the study found that the nutrient concentration affected the number of leaves and leaf area. The number of leaves was higher in the treatment using 100% and 150% nutrients. Meanwhile, the leaf area increased with increasing nutrient concentration from 0% to 150%. The nutrient concentration then interacted with the variety in influencing the plant height. The plant height of the Martina variety was higher than the Johanna variety when 0% and 100% nutrients were applied. The variety also affected the leaf area and interacted with the number of weeks in affecting the SPAD readings and number of leaves. Thus, the two tested varieties (Johanna and Martina) have distinct early growth patterns that differ from one another as affected by the nutrient concentrations and plant age (number of weeks). The release of available nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) from agricultural tile drainage contributes to eutrophication in water bodies. To mitigate the harmful impact of nutrient release, drainage water management (DWM) has been proposed as a beneficial management practice that will limit N and P in tile drainage discharge. This study, conducted in the organic soils of the Holland Marsh, Ontario, assessed the nutrient water quality for 2 years (2015–2016) under DWM systems: controlled drainage (CD) comprising a series of stackable gates to manually control the water table level; and pumped drainage (PD) which uses a submersible pump within a collector well that discharges effluent when activated. The latter is the common method of field drainage in the Holland Marsh, however, there is limited comparable research for either DWM system. The data were separated into growing and fallow seasons as well as winter, spring, and summer seasons for trend analysis (winter: October–February; spring: March–May; summer: June–September). The nitrate (NO3‐N) concentrations, under CD, were found to be on average higher during the winter season (7.64 mg L−1) compared to the growing season (3.76 mg L−1). Furthermore, total N concentrations are positively correlated to discharge (R > 0.55). The average total P concentration increased during the summer period following fertilization; however, there was no correlation between P and drainage discharge throughout the duration of the study. The P concentrations depended more on nutrient inputs, rather than the discharge under CD. The log regression statistical relationship showed significant differences in nutrient levels compared to the mean at both sites, however, greater differences were found under CD. Under PD, the NO3‐N concentrations showed significant seasonal trends between the spring and winter (Pr > t: 0.0061) and summer (Pr > t: <0.0001). This dataset holds 9,175 entries that report the nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, manganese, copper and boron contents of various plant species, with a focus on crops. The dataset accounts data of 94 plant species, and present nutrient concentration of 14 different plant tissues. The data are derived from the Soil and Plant Nutrition Lab of the Chilean Agricultural Research Institute, which provided services to farmers in the Chilean Central Valley between 2006 and 2020. The analytical methods used to generate these data were consistent across all years, ensuring the reliability of the information. Specifically, nitrogen content was determined using the Kjeldahl method, while all other analytes were quantified via colorimetry (phosphorus and boron) or atomic absorption spectrometry following high-temperature oxidation and dilution of the ashes with hydrochloric acid. The dataset has numerous potential applications, including the estimation of crop nutrient extraction rates, the identification of nutrient deficiencies or excesses, and the provision of reference or prior information for researchers studying plant physiology. The dataset includes 21 Chilean endemic species, which might be of particular interest to researchers studying the biodiversity and ecology of Chile's Central Valley.

Effective nutrient management requires understanding nutrient uptake at various growth stages and nutrient removal by the harvested portion. Information on nutrient accumulation was provided by some older literature, and a few researchers have focused on this issue in this modern period with modern hybrids and improved corn cultivation practices. While almost all the studies were conducted in northern states of the US, information for the Southern Great Plains is still limited. To bridge this knowledge gap, a 2-year field study was conducted in a rain-fed corn production system. The study aimed to evaluate the impact of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) fertilization on N, P, and K contents in aboveground plants at different growth stages. Pre-plant application of N (0, 67, 133 kg N ha−1), P (0 and 20 kg ha−1) and K (0 and 60 kg ha−1) fertilizers was done. Results from our study revealed that nutrient uptake values, pattern and dynamics depend on environmental conditions, soil type and management practices. N concentration in plants showed a linear response to N application rate while P and K concentrations were unaffected by NPK fertilization rates. Total N, P and K uptake was primarily driven by N application rate, showing a linear increase with higher N rates. Conidia fusion (CF) is a commonly observed structure in fungi. However, it has not been systematically studied. This study examined 2457 strains of nematode-trapping fungi (NTF) to explore the species specificity, physiological period, and physiological significance of CF. The results demonstrated that only six species of Arthrobotrys can form CF among the sixty-five tested NTF species. The studies on the model species Arthrobotrys oligospora (DL228) showed that CF occurred in both shed and unshed plus mature and immature conidia. Additionally, the conidia fusion rate (CFR) increased significantly with the decrease of nutrient concentration in habitats. The studies on the conidia fusion body (CFB) produced by A. oligospora (DL228) revealed that the more conidia contained in the CFB, the faster and denser the mycelia of the CFB germinated in weak nutrient medium and soil plates. On the one hand, rapid mycelial extension is beneficial for the CFB to quickly find new nutrient sources in habitats with uneven nutrient distribution. On the other hand, dense mycelium increases the contact area with the environment, improving the nutrient absorption efficiency, which is conducive to improving the survival rate of conidia in the weak nutrient environment. In addition, all species that form CF produce smaller conidia. Based on this observation, CF may be a strategy to balance the defects (nutrient deficiency) caused by conidia miniaturization. Background and aims: Forecasted climate change and overgrazing are threatening the sustainability of dehesas, human-managed ecosystems where pastures, livestock and scattered trees coexist. Pasture quality is particularly sensitive to these global-change drivers, but there are still many gaps to broaden knowledge about the interactive effects of both factors on it. In addition, scattered trees might play a relevant role in maintaining high levels of pasture quality under future scenarios of higher aridity, but its role remains largely unexplored. Methods: We designed a field manipulative experiment of rainfall exclusion and increased temperature aimed to evaluate the impact of forecasted climate on pasture quality under different historical grazing intensities. To test the potential buffering effect of trees, experimental plots were installed equally in two habitat types: under trees and open grassland. Results: Warming reduced the nutrient concentration of pasture, while drought increased it. Tree canopy improved soil fertility, which translated into an increase in pasture quality. Livestock exclusion and high grazing intensity caused a decrease in pasture quality, whereas moderate grazing intensity exerted positive effects on it. Finally, warming beneath tree canopy negatively affected the P concentration of pasture, specifically in the site subjected to moderate grazing intensity. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that communities subjected to moderate grazing are more sensitive to climate change from a nutritional standpoint, likely because this management type provides high levels of P to the soil. Urban and agricultural expansion and intensification pose a critical threat to water quality and aquatic ecosystems. Increased nutrient loading into waterways combined with warming temperatures due to climate change have increased eutrophication and algal blooms. The relationship between land use, nutrient availability, and algal growth can vary dramatically across space and time, but few studies have captured this variation. The goal of this research is to assess water quality across time and disparate land uses, and its influence on algal community composition in the Albemarle Sound, a brackish water estuary in North Carolina. We collected water quality data from 21 sites across the sound, visiting six sites in Chowan County biweekly and 15 other sites twice between June and August 2020. Water samples from each site were tested for nitrate, phosphate, ammonia, bicarbonate, and total phosphorus (TP). Preserved algal samples from the six Chowan County sites were enumerated under a microscope to estimate genus richness and biomass. In the Chowan County sites, phosphorus increased and nitrate decreased over the course of the summer. Across all sites, TP increased with development and agricultural land use. These results suggest that sources of nitrogen and phosphorus in the sound differ. Algal richness increased with nitrate concentration and decreased with precipitation while biomass increased with water temperature. Our results indicate that climate change impacts, particularly increasing temperatures and extreme precipitation, influence how land use, water quality, and algal community composition interact. This study investigated the effects of different cropping patterns and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) inoculation on the productivity of kidney bean and the essence quantity and quality of lemon balm. The cropping patterns included kidney bean monoculture (KBm), lemon balm monoculture (LBm), and additive intercropping ratios of 100% lemon balm + 15% kidney bean (LB/15 KB), 100% lemon balm + 30% kidney bean (LB/30 KB), 100% lemon balm + 45% kidney bean (LB/45 KB), 100% lemon balm + 60% kidney bean (LB/60 KB), with or without AMF inoculation. Monoculture produced the highest dry matter yield of lemon balm [139.1 g m–2 (first harvest) and 121.0 g m–2 (second harvest)] and seed yield of kidney bean (1315 kg ha–1). AMF inoculation increased the dry matter yields of lemon balm by 9.6% and 10.9% (first and second harvests, respectively) and seed yield of kidney bean by 41.8%. The LB/45 KB intercropping ratio produced the highest essence content of lemon balm [0.17% (first harvest) and 0.16% (second harvest)], which did not significantly differ from those in LB/30 KB. Interestingly, AMF inoculation enhanced essence productivity by 33.3% in the first harvest and 21.4% in the second harvest. For both harvests, the GC–MS analyses identified 19 constituents in the lemon balm essence, with the major constituents being citronella, geranial, neral, trans-caryophyllene, and caryophyllene oxide. The LB/45 KB with AMF treatment produced the highest citronella content in both harvests. Concentrations of N, P, and K in most of intercropping patterns increased over the monocultures. Inadequate fertilization affects the production of quality seedlings, because they need a balanced balance of essential nutrients, in the concentrations required to grow properly. With the above, it was proposed to determine the effect produced by fertilizers calcium triple superphosphate, ammonium nitrate and potassium nitrate fertilizers on the variables number of leaves, plant height, plant diameter, root length and root biomass wet seedlings of Eucalyptus deglupta Blume (Myrtaceae). For this, three nutritional schemes were established of N, P, K and Ca (190-35-210-150 ppm) T1; (150-50-250-180ppm) T2; (140-55-300-200 ppm) T3 and a control without T4 solution. After 60 days, the concentrations of N, P, K and Ca (190-35-210-150 ppm) determined greater growth in the number of leaves (22,3 leaves); plant height (157,26 mm); plant diameter (2,41 mm) and wet root biomass (6,6 g). However, the observations indicate that for the root length variable, the treatments supplied with concentrations of N, P, K and Ca, did not show significant differences in their means. Effective management of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) are crucial for increasing crop production and productivity as they are associated with a number of enzymatic and physiological activities in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Field experiments were carried out during the winters of 2019˗˗20 and 2020˗˗21 to study the influence of varying levels of N, P, and K on crop performance, nutrient concentration, and uptake at various growth stages of wheat in mid-hill of Nepal. The study was conducted with factorial combinations of three N levels (100, 125, and 150 kg N ha−1), three P levels (25, 50, and 75 kg P2O5 ha−1) and three K levels (25, 50, and 75 kg K2O ha−1) in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Increasing N and K rates significantly (p <.05) increased total dry matter, grain yield, nutrient concentrations and uptakes in wheat. Pooled means showed significantly higher grain yields of 6.3 t ha−1 were obtained with N @ 125 kg ha−1, and K2O @ 50 kg ha−1 than lower rates. At maturity, average concentrations of N, P, and K in grain were 15.5, 3.6, and 5.8 g kg−1, respectively, and 5.4, 0.9, and 10.9 g kg−1 in straw, respectively, depending on the rate of NPK applied. N and P were mostly accumulated in wheat grain, whereas K was found higher in wheat straw than in grain. Worldwide increases in nitrogen deposition rates are influenced by human activities. Although the total amount of N deposition tends to be stable in our country, atmospheric N deposition of the reactive N forms (NO4+-N, NH4+; NO3−-N, NO3−) is remarkably different, and the ratios of NH4+ to NO3− change continuously. Nutrient resorption is a crucial driver of plant nutrient conservation strategies and litter quality. Therefore, the plant nutrient resorption pattern has remarkable ecological significance for nutrient cycling and the community structure of the ecosystem. However, previous studies have found that plants have different preferences in NH4+ and NO3−, and the response of nutrient resorption to different N forms remains unclear. In 2017 and 2018, we conducted field experiments simulating five NO3− and NH4+ addition ratios to examine the responses of the nutrient resorption of the dominant species, Stipa capillata, in the alpine grassland of northwest China. Results showed that N addition treatments did not affect the nutrient resorption efficiencies. The results showed that N application had little effect on soil inorganic N composition, so there was no significant change in the nutrient resorption efficiencies. In addition, the nutrient resorption efficiencies were unaffected across the five different ratios of nitrate and NH4+ addition, suggesting that nutrient resorption was not only controlled by the nutrient supply and nutrient form. Our results have important implications in understanding the significance of the frequency of N addition due to N loss through leaching and denitrification. The results also highlight that low intensity and high frequency N addition are required to investigate the response of plant nutrient resorption to the N supply in the future study. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in cattle is widespread because of the increased use of antibiotics to combat microbial diseases and enhance milk production. The cattle excreta released into the environment can be a potent source of contamination in spreading antibiotic resistance, especially upon its application in agriculture. However, the correlation of AMR profile of manure with other physico-chemical parameters is limited. Therefore, the study aimed to generate AMR profiles for manure samples collected from 25 different sites of two agriculturally important states in India, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Samples were tested for physico-chemical parameters, viz., electrical conductivity, pH, total nitrogen (N), total phosphorus (P), and total potassium (K). Bacterial community analysis was done by culture-dependent and culture-independent methods. The influence of feeding practices, nutrient concentration, and bacterial abundance on antibiotic resistance profiles was observed in collected manure samples. Soil salinity caused by climate change is a major global issue, especially in regions like the Mediterranean basin. Most commercially cultivated horticultural species, including pepper, are considered to be salt sensitive. However, some underutilized genotypes exhibit high adaptability to adverse environmental conditions, without compromising yield. This study aimed to investigate the effects of salinity stress on the yield, nutrition, and fruit quality of four pepper landraces: JO 109 (Capsicum annuum var. grossum), JO 204 (Capsicum annuum var. grossum), JO 207 (Capsicum annuum var. grossum), and ‘Florinis’. The California cultivar ‘Yolo Wonder’ and the commercial F1 hybrid ‘Sammy RZ‘ were used as controls. The experiment was conducted in the greenhouse facilities of the Laboratory of Vegetable Production at the Agricultural University of Athens. Half of the plants were exposed to a nutrient solution containing NaCl at a concentration that could maintain the NaCl level in the rhizosphere at 30 mM (salt-treated plants), while the remaining plants were irrigated with a nutrient solution containing 0.5 mM NaCl (control plants). Yield and yield quality attributes, such as firmness, titratable acidity (TA), total soluble solids content (TSSC), fruit height, and diameter were recorded. The results revealed that the landraces were more tolerant to salinity than the commercial varieties ‘Yolo Wonder’ and ‘Sammy RZ’. Moreover, subjecting pepper plants to increased salinity resulted in increased fruit quality, manifested by an increase in TSSC and TA.

The evaluation of the hydrography and biogeochemistry of the Adriatic Sea over the last century was summarized in this review to point out any changes in river runoff and provide an overview of the cause and effect of these trends on marine ecosystems. Although several rivers flow into the Adriatic, the most affected area is the northern Adriatic, where the Po River loads into the basin half of the total freshwater input, carrying river runoff and causing algal blooms and hypoxia phenomena. These fresh waters of the northern Adriatic flow predominantly along the entire western side, reaching the southernmost part of the basin up to the Mediterranean Sea. Here, and in the whole basin, variations in river runoff and nutrient concentration have been observed through the years. Starting from 1960 until the end of the century, an increase in nutrient discharge and phytoplankton activity was reported, with negative repercussions on local fisheries, species richness, and recreational activities within the basin. However, a recent decrease in river inflow has been observed along the coastal belt, which can trigger negative consequences for the food web of the marine ecosystem. These trends, more broadly, corroborate the vulnerability of the Adriatic Sea and stress the importance of implementing strategies for the defense of the relevant ecosystems within its confines.

Currently, understanding of the variation and balance of multi-elements has mainly focused on terrestrial plants, however, only a few studies focused on aquatic plants in cold alpine wetlands. Here, we examined the pattern of concentrations and variations of 24 elements in wetland plants (including emerged, hydrophytic, and submerged macrophytes) across the Tibetan Plateau (China). The concentrations of these elements exhibit a wide extent by five orders of magnitude, besides, a significantly negative correlation is found between the average concentrations and their variations of each element, which means the macroelements are less variable than the microelements. The environmental factors, including the aqueous and edaphic properties and nutrient concentrations, drive the pattern of multi-element in wetland plants, while the spatial and climatic variables, along with the phylogenetic and taxonomic effects only provide modest contributions. Although human interference was not selected for the final best-fitting model, anthropogenic activities cannot be ignored. Our findings advance the knowledge about vegetal elements in high-altitude wetlands beyond the framework of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus, and facilitate the understanding of the multi-elemental model and the driving factors.

Pinus koraiensis is famous for its high-quality timber production all the way and is much more famous for its high value health-care nut oil production potential since 1990's, but the less understanding of its reproduction biology seriously hindered its nut productivity increase. Exploring the effects of reproduction on nutrient uptake, allocation and storage help to understand and modify reproduction patterns in masting species and high nut yield cultivar selection and breeding. Here, we compared seasonality in growth and in nitrogen ([N]) and phosphorus ([P]) concentrations in needles, branches and cones of reproductive (cone-bearing) and vegetative branches (having no cones) of P. koraiensis during a masting year. The growth of one- and two-year-old reproductive branches was significantly higher than that of vegetative branches. Needle, phloem and xylem [N] and [P] were lower in reproductive branches than in vegetative branches, although the extent and significance of the differences between branch types varied across dates. [N] and [P] in most tissues were high in spring, decreased during summer, and then recovered by the end of the growing season. Overall, [N] and [P] were highest in needles, lowest in the xylem and intermediate in the phloem. More than half of the N (73.5%) and P (51.6%) content in reproductive branches were allocated to cones. There was a positive correlation between cone number and N and P content in needles (R2 = 0.64, R2 = 0.73) and twigs (R2 = 0.65, R2 = 0.62) of two-year-old reproductive branches. High nutrient sink strength of cones and vegetative tissues of reproductive branches suggested that customized fertilization practices can help improve crop yield in Pinus koraiensis. Plant nutrient concentration and resorption play a major role in determining primary production and development of forests. Yet how plant nutrient concentration and resorption respond to altered interannual precipitation and how interannual precipitation variability mediates the responses of plant nutrient concentration and resorption to N addition remain uncertain. Here, we examined the responses of needle nutrient (N and P) concentrations of all aged classes, nutrient resorption efficiency, and proficiency to N addition (10 g N m−2 year−1) over a 4‐year period (from 2016 to 2019) that experienced high variability in precipitation in a Mongolian pine plantation in a semiarid region of northeast China. There were significant interannual variations in N and P concentrations in all aged needles and litters, N and P resorption efficiency, as well as soil inorganic N and available P concentrations in the control plots. Increased precipitation resulted in increased needle nutrient concentrations across the four consecutive years. However, needle nutrient concentrations did not covary with soil available nutrients. The responses of needle N resorption efficiency (NRE) to N addition differed across the four years, with N addition decreasing NRE in wet years, but not in dry years. Taken together, our results showed that foliar nutrient concentrations are sensitive to altered annual precipitation and that different interaction effects exist between N addition and sampling year for different nutrient variables. Mediterranean forest ecosystems in Croatia are of very high significance because of the ecological functions they provide. This region is highly sensitive to abiotic stresses such as air pollution, high sunlight, and high temperatures alongside dry periods; therefore, it is important to monitor the state of these forest ecosystems and how they respond to these stresses. This study was conducted on trees in situ and focused on the four most important forest species in the Mediterranean region in Croatia: pubescent oak (Quercus pubescens Willd.), holm oak (Quercus ilex L.), Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis Mill.) and black pine (Pinus nigra J. F. Arnold.). Trees were selected and divided into two groups: trees with defoliation of >25% (defoliated) and trees with defoliation of ≤25% (undefoliated). Leaves and needles were collected from selected trees. Differences in chlorophyll content, hydrogen peroxide content, lipid peroxidation and enzyme activity (superoxide dismutase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, non-specific peroxidase), and nutrient content between the defoliated and undefoliated trees of the examined species were determined. The results showed that there were significant differences for all species between the defoliated and undefoliated trees for at least one of the examined parameters. A principal component analysis showed that the enzyme ascorbate peroxidase can be an indicator of oxidative stress caused by ozone. By using oxidative stress indicators, it is possible to determine whether the trees are under stress even before visual damage occurs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Different levels of humic acid (HA) (0, 100, 500, and 1000 mg L−1) and Ca (3.5 and 7 meq/L) were applied to growth media. A multi-level factorial experiment with a completely randomized design was employed with three replicates to evaluate interaction effects. Macro- and micro-nutrient contents were measured in leaves, roots, and scapes of gerbera. Five hundred mg/L HA increased macro- and micronutrients (P, N, K, Mg, Ca, Fe, and Zn) contents of leaves, roots, and scapes. High HA levels reduced some nutrient contents. The 7 meq/L Ca significantly increased Fe and Zn contents of leaves and roots and K and Mg contents of roots, and had no significant effect on other macronutrients. The results showed the importance of Ca-HA treatment in gerbera cultivation through increasing nutrient concentration. The Ca-HA treatment exhibited significant effects on nutrient uptake of gerbera. Ca and HA combination was more effective, especially with 7 meq Ca and 500 mg/L HA, than the low Ca and HA content. The 7 meq/L Ca and 500 mg/L HA increased N, Ca, K, and Zn concentrations in leaves, and Ca, P, Mg, Fe, and Zn concentrations in scapes, and Zn in roots, whereas this trend for Fe, Mg, and N in leaves and P and Mg in roots was found in 100 and 1000 mg/L HA. Conclusively, nutrients' absorbtion and accumulations in scape and leaves were higher than in roots and were higher when Ca was applied in 7 meq/L with HA at 500 mg/L to gerbera. As the largest freshwater lake in China, Poyang Lake has been influenced by the urbanization process since the 1990s. Therefore, nutrient concentration data of Poyang Lake in the past three decades were selected for spatial and temporal heterogeneity analysis. The entropy-based method (EBM) was used to calculate the contribution weight of three independent driving factors (precipitation, agricultural land area, and urban land area) to nutrient concentrations in Poyang Lake in three different periods (1988–1997, 1998–2007, and 2008–2018). The results of this study showed that the concentrations of NH3-N and total nitrogen (TN) have similar trends over time, both of which have been increasing in this century, while the total phosphorus (TP) concentration has experienced a decreasing-increasing process. The nutrient concentrations in the eastern part of Poyang Lake were at the highest level in the whole lake after 1998, and this area has good conditions for the formation of algal blooms, which need special control and management. The effect of precipitation on the nutrient concentrations of the lake in the last 30 years was most prominent. The weight of agriculture's contribution to nutrient concentrations showed a significant upward trend during the first 20 years, and agriculture and urban construction weights remained stable after experiencing opposite changes in the first 20 years. In the future, precipitation in the Poyang Lake basin needs to be of high concern, and agricultural and urban pollution control measures need to be implemented continuously. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The international growing demand of the avocado (Persea americana Mill.) market, together with the expansion of its agricultural area, requires the increasing of its technification, which makes necessary to have information aboutnutrient absorption in relation to its phenology. Therefore, an experiment was conducted in a commercial avocado production field of the farm “Don Ricardo” located on the central coast of Peru, in order to characterize the dynamics of macronutrients (N, P, K, Ca and Mg). The methodology followed and the results obtained will be the main guide to improve and implement more efficient fertilization strategies that will lead to higher yields and lower production costs in this crop. The experiment included 5 production cycles, from 2014-15 to 2018-19, in 7 phenological stages, collecting according to the crop development, leaves, panicles and fruits. 40 randomized plants were selected from a total of 50 plants marked as sampling area. The results were analyzed using a descriptive statistic, with box diagrams of the concentration of each nutrient by phenological stage. Two graphs per element were generated to represent the leaf dynamic and the fruit dynamic, respectively, including the data taken from the flower. It was concluded that the highest nutrient requirements of avocado were during the flowering, the fruit set and in fruits from 10 mm to 30 mm in diameter. The most abundant form of nitrogen was nitric, and it was accumulated mainly in the productive organs. The phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium concentrations decreased as the fruit grew, and calcium and magnesium concentrations in leaves were higher than in fruits.

In plantations, nutrient extraction is likely to be higher with shorter rotations. This is because thinner stems have a higher proportion of nutrient-rich bark, and sapwood contains more nutrients than hardwood. Annual willow plantations may extract even more nutrients than long rotation forests. In short rotation forest systems, the diameter of the harvested stems may affect the amount of nutrients exported with the wood. The present study investigated the effect of stem diameter distribution on nutrient extraction and nutrient use efficiency (UE). Two Salix clones were planted at low or high densities, and irrigated or left rainfed. Stems were harvested annually, and three years after planting, N, P, K, and Ca concentrations in small, medium, and big stems were determined, as well as the proportion of each stem diameter class at harvest. N extraction was the highest, followed by Ca, K, and P extraction. Nutrient extraction and nitrogen use efficiency were influenced by the proportion of small, medium, and big stems. The clones showed differences in nutrient concentration and stem diameter distribution, and irrigation increased the proportion of large stems and nitrogen concentration. Although the NUE and PUE were not linearly related to yield, they were related to the distribution of stem diameter and nutrient concentration. Higher yield resulted in higher CaUE and KUE, but the extraction of these nutrients during harvest was fine-tuned by stem diameter distribution and tissue concentration. This highlights the significance of stem diameter distribution in assessing the nutrient costs of wood production for bioenergy. As food production dominates global freshwater consumption and nutrient discharge regulation tightens, the performance of novel technologies at applied scale needs to be studied to optimize water use and minimize environmental impact. Water reuse and the nutrient recovery from greenhouse wastewater were assessed utilizing one-pass capacitive electrodialysis (CED) at a pilot scale (19.32 m2 membrane area, 1–4 m3/day capacity), employing carbon-based electrodes. CED was optimized for key parameters, including applied voltage, cross-flow velocity, staging, water recovery, and varying feed concentrations. High-quality greenhouse irrigation water (conductivity<0.2 mS/cm and Na+ < 0.1 mmol/L) was produced, meeting specified guidelines. Na+ was retained less compared to Ca2+ and Mg2+ (86 % ± 4 %, 97 % ± 2 %, and 98 % ± 3 % removal, respectively) and nutrients concentration factors for K+, NO 3 − and PO 4 3− reached up to 2.3 (596 ± 5 mg/L), 2.7 (1330 ± 20 mg/L), and 1.9 (130 ± 2 mg/L), respectively. There was no significant improvement in ion removal for all feed compositions beyond 12 V and 80 % water recovery. CED's specific energy consumption (SEC) with optimized parameters was 4-fold lower than the modeled RO system, and lower than previous electrodialysis studies. The highest SEC obtained was 0.24 kWh/m3.
