Abstract

It is made available under a Creative Commons (CC BY 4.0) Attribution License. This article presents a collection of simulation studies using the ECCE detector concept in the context of the EIC's exclusive, diffractive, and tagging physics program, which aims to further explore the rich quark–gluon structure of nucleons and nuclei. To successfully execute the program, ECCE proposed to utilize the detector system close to the beamline to ensure exclusivity and tag ion beam/fragments for a particular reaction of interest. Preliminary studies confirm the proposed technology and design satisfy the requirements. The projected physics impact results are based on the projected detector performance from the simulation at 10 or 100 fb−1 of integrated luminosity. Additionally, insights related to a potential second EIC detector are documented, which could serve as a guidepost for future development. Abstract

Lepton scattering is an established ideal tool for studying inner structure of small particles such as nucleons as well as nuclei. As a future high energy nuclear physics project, an Electron-ion collider in China (EicC) has been proposed. It will be constructed based on an upgraded heavy-ion accelerator, High Intensity heavy-ion Accelerator Facility (HIAF) which is currently under construction, together with a new electron ring. The proposed collider will provide highly polarized electrons (with a polarization of $\sim$80%) and protons (with a polarization of $\sim$70%) with variable center of mass energies from 15 to 20 GeV and the luminosity of (2-3) $\times$ 10$^{33}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. Polarized deuterons and Helium-3, as well as unpolarized ion beams from Carbon to Uranium, will be also available at the EicC. The main foci of the EicC will be precision measurements of the structure of the nucleon in the sea quark region, including 3D tomography of nucleon; the partonic structure of nuclei and the parton interaction with the nuclear environment; the exotic states, especially those with heavy flavor quark contents. In addition, issues fundamental to understanding the origin of mass could be addressed by measurements of heavy quarkonia near-threshold production at the EicC. In order to achieve the above-mentioned physics goals, a hermetical detector system will be constructed with cutting-edge technologies. This document is the result of collective contributions and valuable inputs from experts across the globe. The EicC physics program complements the ongoing scientific programs at the Jefferson Laboratory and the future EIC project in the United States. Abstract

A forward electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeter (FoCal) was proposed as an upgrade to the ALICE experiment, to be installed during LS3 for data-taking in 2027--2029 at the LHC. The FoCal extends the scope of ALICE, which was designed for the comprehensive study of hot and dense partonic matter, by adding new capabilities to explore the small-$x$ parton structure of nucleons and nuclei. The primary objective of the FoCal is high-precision inclusive measurement of direct photons and jets, as well as coincident gamma-jet and jet-jet measurements, in pp and p--Pb collisions. These measurements by FoCal constitute an essential part of a comprehensive small-$x$ program at the LHC down to $x\sim10^{-6}$ and over a large range of $Q^2$ with a broad array of complementary probes, comprising -- in addition to the photon measurements by FoCal and LHCb -- Drell-Yan and open charm measurements planned by LHCb, as well as photon-induced reactions performed by all LHC experiments., Letter of Interest submitted to Snowmass 2021/22

Abstract

Deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) allows one to probe Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) describing the 3D structure of the nucleon. We report the first measurement of the DVCS beam-spin asymmetry using the CLAS12 spectrometer with a 10.2 and 10.6 GeV electron beam scattering from unpolarised protons. The results greatly extend the $Q^2$ and Bjorken-$x$ phase space beyond the existing data in the valence region and provide over 2000 new data points measured with unprecedented statistical uncertainty, setting new, tight constraints for future phenomenological studies., Comment: Revised Figure 4 and discussion around the number of effective ANNs after Bayesian reweighting

Abstract

Beam-recoil transferred polarizations for the exclusive electroproduction of $K^+\Lambda$ and $K^+\Sigma^0$ final states from an unpolarized proton target have been measured using the CLAS12 spectrometer at Jefferson Laboratory. The measurements at beam energies of 6.535~GeV and 7.546~GeV span the range of four-momentum transfer $Q^2$ from 0.3 to 4.5~GeV$^2$ and invariant energy $W$ from 1.6 to 2.4~GeV, while covering the full center-of-mass angular range of the $K^+$. These new data extend the existing hyperon polarization data from CLAS in a similar kinematic range but from a significantly larger dataset. They represent an important addition to the world data, allowing for better exploration of the reaction mechanism in strangeness production processes, for further understanding of the spectrum and structure of excited nucleon states, and for improved insight into the strong interaction in the regime of non-perturbative dynamics., Comment: 25 pages, 22 figures, 4 tables

Abstract

Physical review / D 104(5), 054503 (2021). doi:10.1103/PhysRevD.104.054503, We present results on the quark unpolarized, helicity and transversity parton distributions functions of the nucleon. We use the quasi-parton distribution approach within the lattice QCD framework and perform the computation using an ensemble of twisted mass fermions with the strange and charm quark masses tuned to approximately their physical values and light quark masses giving pion mass of 260 MeV. We use hierarchical probing to evaluate the disconnected quark loops. We discuss identification of ground state dominance, the Fourier transform procedure and convergence with the momentum boost. We find non-zero results for the disconnected isoscalar and strange quark distributions. The determination of the quark parton distribution and in particular the strange quark contributions that are poorly known provide valuable input to the structure of the nucleon., Published by Inst., Melville, NY

Measuring DVCS on a neutron target is a necessary step to deepen our understanding of the structure of the nucleon in terms of Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs). The combination of neutron and proton targets allows to perform a flavor decomposition of the GPDs. Moreover, neutron-DVCS plays a complementary role to DVCS on a transversely polarized proton target in the determination of the GPD $E$, the least known and constrained GPD that enters Ji's angular momentum sum rule. Abstract

Understanding the structure of the nucleon (proton and neutron) is a critical problem in physics. Especially challenging is to understand the spin structure when the Strong Interaction becomes truly strong. At energy scales below the nucleon mass (~1 GeV), the intense interactions of the quarks and gluons inside the nucleon makes them highly correlated. Their coherent behavior causes the emergence of effective hadronic degrees of freedom (hadrons are composite particles made of quarks and gluons) which are necessary to understand the nucleon properties. Theoretically studying this subject requires approaches employing non-perturbative techniques or using hadronic degrees of freedom, e.g. chiral effective field theory (chiEFT). Here, we present measurements sensitive to the neutron's spin precession under electromagnetic fields. The observables, the generalized spin-polarizabilities delta_LT and gamma_0, which quantify the nucleon spin's precession, were measured at very low energy-momentum transfer squared Q^2 corresponding to probing distances of the size of the nucleon. Our Q^2 values match the domain where chiEFT calculations are expected to be applicable. The calculations have been conducted to high degrees of sophistication, including that of the so-called "gold-plated" observable, delta_LT. Surprisingly however, our data show a strong discrepancy with the chiEFT calculations. This presents a challenge to the current description of the neutron's spin properties.

Abstract

Measuring the spin structure of protons and neutrons tests our understanding of how they arise from quarks and gluons, the fundamental building blocks of nuclear matter. At long distances the coupling constant of the strong interaction becomes large, requiring non-perturbative methods to calculate quantum chromodynamics processes, such as lattice gauge theory or effective field theories. Here we report proton spin structure measurements from scattering a polarized electron beam off polarized protons. The spin-dependent cross-sections were measured at large distances, corresponding to the region of low momentum transfer squared between 0.012 and 1.0 GeV$^2$. This kinematic range provides unique tests of chiral effective field theory predictions. Our results show that a complete description of the nucleon spin remains elusive, and call for further theoretical works, e.g. in lattice quantum chromodynamics. Finally, our data extrapolated to the photon point agree with the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule, a fundamental prediction of quantum field theory that relates the anomalous magnetic moment of the proton to its integrated spin-dependent cross-sections., Published version. 10 pages, 5 figures. 20 pages of supplementary material (data tables and a figure)

Abstract

In this work we explore different relativistic descriptions of nuclear matter along the lines originally proposed in Refs.[1,2] where chiral symmetry is incorporated within the Walecka type Relativistic Mean Field (RMF) model as well as the effect of confinement through the nucleon response. The parameters of this model are controlled by fundamental properties, such as the chiral potential, the Lattice-QCD predictions, the quark structure, and two saturation properties (density and energy). The predictions of this chiral+confinement model is compared to two other models: another chiral model - but without confinement effect - and the original RMF model. For these three models, we additionally take care of parameter uncertainties and propagate them to our predictions for dense matter properties employing Bayesian statistics. We show that the combination of chiral potential with nucleon response represents a microscopically motivated and economical way to treat in-medium corrections to the scalar equation of motion, accurately reproducing the other two models which are directly fitted to the empirical properties of nuclear matter. In addition, the order hierarchy in power of the scalar field in the scalar potential is respected, which is not always the case for models where the scalar potential is fitted to empirical data. While these models are calibrated to the same properties at saturation density, they differ in their predictions as the density increases. Interestingly, we also show that, by fixing the $\rho$ coupling constant from the quark structure of the nucleon, these three models reproduce only half of the empirical symmetry energy.

Abstract

The outer crust properties of cold non-accreting neutron stars are studied within the framework of the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model, which includes the effects of modifications of the quark structure inside individual nucleons when they are within a high-density nuclear medium. With a unique set of five well-constrained adjustable parameters, which have a clear physical basis, the QMC model gives predictions for the ground state observables of even-even nuclei which agree with experiment as well as traditional models. Furthermore, it gives improved theoretical values for nuclei thought to play a role in the outer crusts of neutron stars but for which experimental data is not available. Using the latest experimental data tables wherever possible but otherwise the predictions from the QMC model, we construct an equation of state for the outer crust which is then used within stellar model calculations to obtain an equilibrium sequence of crustal layers, each characterized by a particular neutron rich nuclei. Various properties of the layers are calculated for a range of neutron-star masses, and comparisons are made with alternative equations of state from the literature. This leads to the conclusion that the QMC model successfully predicts the outer crust properties and is fully comparable with the more traditional mass models, which all depend on a larger number of parameters., Comment: Minor changes in the text (typos and phrasing), additional cross-listing, 35 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

The microscopic origin of the spin-orbit (SO) potential in terms of sub-baryonic degrees of freedom is explored and discussed for application to nuclei and hyper-nuclei. We thus develop a chiral relativistic approach where the coupling to the scalar- and vector-meson fields are controlled by the quark substructure. This approach suggests that the isoscalar and isovector density dependence of the SO potential can be used to test the microscopic ingredients which are implemented in the relativistic framework: the quark substructure of the nucleon in its ground-state and its coupling to the rich meson sector where the $\rho$ meson plays a crucial role. This is also in line with the Vector Dominance Model (VDM) phenomenology and the known magnetic properties of the nucleons. We explore predictions based on Hartree and Hartree-Fock mean field, as well as various scenarios for the $\rho$-nucleon coupling, ranked as weak, medium and strong, which impacts the isoscalar and isovector density dependence of the SO potential. We show that a medium to strong $\rho$ coupling is essential to reproduce Skyrme phenomenology in $N=Z$ nuclei as well as its isovector dependence. Assuming an SU(6) valence quark model our approach is extended to hyperons and furnishes a microscopic understanding of the quenching of the $N\Lambda$ spin-orbit potential in hyper-nuclei. International audience; We discuss the leading-twist quark Wigner distributions in the nucleon, both in the T-even and T-odd sectors, considering all the possible configurations of the quark and nucleon polarizations. We identify the basic multipole structures associated with each distribution in the transverse phase space, providing a transparent interpretation of the spin-spin and spin-orbit correlations of quarks and nucleons encoded in these functions.

The data was taken in the HERA II data-taking period and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 330 pb$^{-1}$. Azimuthal angular decorrelation has been proposed to study the Q$^2$ dependence of the evolution of the transverse momentum distributions (TMDs) and understand the small-$x$ region, providing unique insight to nucleon structure. Previous decorrelation measurements of two jets have been performed in proton-proton collisions at very high transverse momentum; these measurements are well described by perturbative QCD at next-to-leading order. The azimuthal decorrelation angle obtained in these studies shows good agreement with predictions from Monte Carlo models including leading order matrix elements and parton showers.New experimental data on charged particle multiplicity distributions are presented, covering the kinematic ranges in momentum transfer 5 < Q$^{2}$ < 100 GeV$^{2}$ and inelasticity 0:0375 < y < 0:6. The data was recorded with the H1 experiment at the HERA collider in positron-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 320 GeV. Charged particles are counted with transverse momenta larger than 150 MeV and pseudorapidity −1.6 < $η_{lab}$ < 1.6 in the laboratory frame, corresponding to high acceptance in the current hemisphere of the hadronic centre-of-mass frame. Charged particle multiplicities are reported on a two dimensional grid of Q$^2$, y and on a three-dimensional grid of Q$^2$, y and $η$. The observable is the probability P(N) to observe N particles in the given $η$ region. The data are confronted with predictions from Monte Carlo generators, and with a simplistic model based on quantum entanglement and strict parton-hadron duality., Published by SISSA, Trieste
