Search

The fact that neutrinos carry a non-vanishing rest mass is evidence ofphysics beyond the Standard Model of elementary particles. Their absolute massbears important relevance from particle physics to cosmology. In this work, wereport on the search for the effective electron antineutrino mass with theKATRIN experiment. KATRIN performs precision spectroscopy of the tritium$\beta$-decay close to the kinematic endpoint. Based on the first fiveneutrino-mass measurement campaigns, we derive a best-fit value of $m_u^{2} ={-0.14^{+0.13}_{-0.15}}~\mathrm{eV^2}$, resulting in an upper limit of $m_u <{0.45}~\mathrm{eV}$ at 90 % confidence level. With six times the statistics ofprevious data sets, amounting to 36 million electrons collected in 259measurement days, a substantial reduction of the background level and improvedsystematic uncertainties, this result tightens KATRIN's previous bound by afactor of almost two.

The $Z$-transformation fitting technique purports to be the best choice forthis type of extraction due to the true functional form of $G_E^p$ beingmathematically guaranteed to exist within the parameter-space of the fitfunction. In this article, we examine the mathematical bias and variancesintroduced by choosing this technique as compared to the more traditional $Q^2$fits to directly test if it is truly a better technique. A selection of $G_E^p$ parameterizations with known fit radius werestatistically sampled and fit with in both $Q^2$ and in $Z$. The mean andvariance of the extracted radii were compared to the input radius. The fitswere performed both with the parameters unbound and bound to study the effectof choosing physically-motivated bounds. Additionally, the data are fit withRational(N,M) functions in $Q^2$ as used by the PRad collaboration. As expected, the results in both $Q^2$ and $Z$ were poor for unboundedpolynomials, with the fits in $Q^2$ showing a rather large bias with smallvariance while the fits in $Z$ had a small bias with a large variance. Theapplication of bounds yield small improvements. In most cases, fits in $Q^2$with Rational(N,M) type functions yielded improved results. We find that the $Z$-transformation technique is a useful tool, but not auniversal improvement over fitting in $Q^2$. The "best" technique was dependenton the parameterization being fit and the $Q^2$ range of the data. The fitswith a Rational(N,M) function in $Q^2$ typically provided improved results overother techniques when the data has sufficient $Q^2$ range, but providedunphysical results when the range was too small. We conclude that any plannedfit should make use of psuedo data to determine the best basis and functionalform for a given data set. In the case of new experiments, this selectionshould ideally be done prior to the collection of the data.

Hot QCD physics studies the nuclear strong force under extreme temperatureand densities. Experimentally these conditions are achieved via high-energycollisions of heavy ions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and theLarge Hadron Collider (LHC). In the past decade, a unique and substantial suiteof data was collected at RHIC and the LHC, probing hydrodynamics at the nucleonscale, the temperature dependence of the transport properties of quark-gluonplasma, the phase diagram of nuclear matter, the interaction of quarks andgluons at different scales and much more. This document, as part of the 2023nuclear science long range planning process, was written to review the progressin hot QCD since the 2015 Long Range Plan for Nuclear Science, as well ashighlight the realization of previous recommendations, and presentopportunities for the next decade, building on the accomplishments andinvestments made in theoretical developments and the construction of newdetectors. Furthermore, this document provides additional context to supportthe recommendations voted on at the Joint Hot and Cold QCD Town Hall Meeting,which are reported in a separate document.

This White Paper presents the community inputs and scientific conclusionsfrom the Hot and Cold QCD Town Meeting that took place September 23-25, 2022 atMIT, as part of the Nuclear Science Advisory Committee (NSAC) 2023 Long RangePlanning process. A total of 424 physicists registered for the meeting. Themeeting highlighted progress in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) nuclear physicssince the 2015 LRP (LRP15) and identified key questions and plausible paths toobtaining answers to those questions, defining priorities for our research overthe coming decade. In defining the priority of outstanding physicsopportunities for the future, both prospects for the short (~ 5 years) andlonger term (5-10 years and beyond) are identified together with thefacilities, personnel and other resources needed to maximize the discoverypotential and maintain United States leadership in QCD physics worldwide. ThisWhite Paper is organized as follows: In the Executive Summary, we detail theRecommendations and Initiatives that were presented and discussed at the TownMeeting, and their supporting rationales. Section 2 highlights major progressand accomplishments of the past seven years. It is followed, in Section 3, byan overview of the physics opportunities for the immediate future, and inrelation with the next QCD frontier: the EIC. Section 4 provides an overview ofthe physics motivations and goals associated with the EIC. Section 5 is devotedto the workforce development and support of diversity, equity and inclusion.This is followed by a dedicated section on computing in Section 6. Section 7describes the national need for nuclear data science and the relevance to QCDresearch.

A new electron scattering experiment (E12-21-003) to verify and understandthe nature of hidden sector particles, with particular emphasis on theso-called X17 particle, has been approved at Jefferson Lab. The search forthese particles is motivated by new hidden sector models introduced to accountfor a variety of experimental and observational puzzles: excess in $e^+e^-$pairs observed in multiple nuclear transitions, the 4.2$\sigma$ disagreementbetween experiments and the standard model prediction for the muon anomalousmagnetic moment, and the small-scale structure puzzle in cosmologicalsimulations. The aforementioned X17 particle has been hypothesized to accountfor the excess in $e^+e^-$ pairs observed from the $^8$Be M1, $^4$He M0, and,most recently, $^{12}$C E1 nuclear transitions to their ground states observedby the ATOMKI group. This experiment will use a high resolution electromagneticcalorimeter to search for or set new limits on the production rate of the X17and other hidden sector particles in the $3 - 60$ MeV mass range via their$e^+e^-$ decay (or $\gamma\gamma$ decay with limited tracking). In thesemodels, the $1 - 100$ MeV mass range is particularly well-motivated and thelower part of this range still remains unexplored. Our proposed directdetection experiment will use a magnetic-spectrometer-free setup (the PRadapparatus) to detect all three final state particles in the visible decay of ahidden sector particle for an effective control of the background and willcover the proposed mass range in a single setting. The use of thewell-demonstrated PRad setup allows for an essentially ready-to-run anduniquely cost-effective search for hidden sector particles in the $3 - 60$ MeVmass range with a sensitivity of 8.9$\times$10$^{-8}$ - 5.8$\times$10$^{-9}$ to$\epsilon^2$, the square of the kinetic mixing interaction constant betweenhidden and visible sectors.

Recent observations of the angular correlation spectra in the decays $ {\rm^4He}^*\to {\rm ^4He}+ e^+e^-$ and $ {\rm ^8Be}^*\to {\rm ^8Be}+ e^+e^-$ havebeen suggested as due to the creation and subsequent decay to anelectron-positron pair of a new light particle with a mass of $\sim 17$ MeV. Inthis work, we present a calculation of the invariant $m_{e^+e^-}$ mass spectrumof the electromagnetic transition of an excited state of helium and estimatethe differential and total width of the decay. We investigate the possibilitythat the source of the signal is an $e^+ e^-$ pair created by a newelectromagnetic decay of $\rm ^4He$ caused by a proposed 12-quark hidden-colorFock state in the ${\rm {^4He}}$ nuclear wavefunction, the "hexadiquark.'' Wefind that we can fit the shape of the signal with the QCD Fock state atexcitation energy ${\rm E^*}\simeq 17.9 $ MeV and a Gaussian form factor forthe electromagnetic decay. We address the physical issues with the fitparameters using properties of the hexadiquark state. In light of this work, weemphasize the need for independent experimental confirmation or refutation ofthe ATOMKI results as well as further experiments to detect the proposed newexcitation of ${\rm ^4He}$.

The possibility that neutrinos may be their own antiparticles, unique among the known fundamental particles, arises from the symmetric theory of fermions proposed by Ettore Majorana in 19371. Given the profound consequences of such Majorana neutrinos, among which is a potential explanation for the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the universe via leptogenesis2, the Majorana nature of neutrinos commands intense experimental scrutiny globally; one of the primary experimental probes is neutrinoless double beta (0νββ) decay. Here we show results from the search for 0νββ decay of 130Te, using the latest advanced cryogenic calorimeters with the CUORE experiment3. CUORE, operating just 10 millikelvin above absolute zero, has pushed the state of the art on three frontiers: the sheer mass held at such ultralow temperatures, operational longevity, and the low levels of ionizing radiation emanating from the cryogenic infrastructure. We find no evidence for 0νββ decay and set a lower bound of the process half-life as 2.2 × 1025 years at a 90 per cent credibility interval. We discuss potential applications of the advances made with CUORE to other fields such as direct dark matter, neutrino and nuclear physics searches and large-scale quantum computing, which can benefit from sustained operation of large payloads in a low-radioactivity, ultralow-temperature cryogenic environment.

The nature of dark matter and properties of neutrinos are among the mostpressing issues in contemporary particle physics. The dual-phase xenontime-projection chamber is the leading technology to cover the availableparameter space for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs), whilefeaturing extensive sensitivity to many alternative dark matter candidates.These detectors can also study neutrinos through neutrinoless double-beta decayand through a variety of astrophysical sources. A next-generation xenon-baseddetector will therefore be a true multi-purpose observatory to significantlyadvance particle physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics, solar physics, andcosmology. This review article presents the science cases for such a detector.

The CUPID-Mo experiment to search for 0$u\beta\beta$ decay in $^{100}$Mohas been recently completed after about 1.5 years of operation at LaboratoireSouterrain de Modane (France). It served as a demonstrator for CUPID, a nextgeneration 0$u\beta\beta$ decay experiment. CUPID-Mo was comprised of 20enriched Li$_2$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ scintillating calorimeters, each with a mass of$\sim$ 0.2 kg, operated at $\sim$20 mK. We present here the final analysis withthe full exposure of CUPID-Mo ($^{100}$Mo exposure of 1.47 kg$\times$yr) usedto search for lepton number violation via 0$u\beta\beta$ decay. We report onvarious analysis improvements since the previous result on a subset of data,reprocessing all data with these new techniques. We observe zero events in theregion of interest and set a new limit on the $^{100}$Mo 0$u\beta\beta$ decayhalf-life of $T^{0u}_{1/2} > 1.8 \times 10^{24}$ year (stat.+syst.) at 90%CI. Under the light Majorana neutrino exchange mechanism this corresponds to aneffective Majorana neutrino mass of $\left <(0.28$--$0.49)$ eV, dependent upon the nuclear matrix element utilized.

CUPID will be a next generation experiment searching for the neutrinolessdouble $\beta$ decay, whose discovery would establish the Majorana nature ofthe neutrino. Based on the experience achieved with the CUORE experiment,presently taking data at LNGS, CUPID aims to reach a background freeenvironment by means of scintillating Li$_{2}$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ crystals coupledto light detectors. Indeed, the simultaneous heat and light detection allows usto reject the dominant background of $\alpha$ particles, as proven by theCUPID-0 and CUPID-Mo demonstrators. In this work we present the results of thefirst test of the CUPID baseline module. In particular, we propose a newoptimized detector structure and light sensors design to enhance theengineering and the light collection, respectively. We characterized the heatdetectors, achieving an energy resolution of (5.9 $\pm$ 0.2) keV FWHM at the$Q$-value of $^{100}$Mo (about 3034 keV). We studied the light collection ofthe baseline CUPID design with respect to an alternative configuration whichfeatures gravity-assisted light detectors' mounting. In both cases we obtainedan improvement in the light collection with respect to past measures and wevalidated the particle identification capability of the detector, which ensuresan $\alpha$ particle rejection higher than 99.9%, fully satisfying therequirements for CUPID.

Cumulants of baryon number are given considerable attention in analyses ofheavy-ion collision experiments as possible signatures of the QCD criticalpoint. In this work, we show that the values of the lowest three cumulants canalso be utilized to recover information about the isothermal speed of sound andits logarithmic derivative with respect to the baryon number density. Thisresult provides a new method for obtaining information about fundamentalproperties of nuclear matter studied in heavy-ion collisions, with consequencesfor both the search for the QCD critical point and neutron star studies. Whilethe approximations and the model comparison we considered apply to experimentsat low energies, the approach itself can be used at any collision energyprovided that measurements of cumulants of baryon number distribution as wellas their temperature dependence are available.

In our quest to understand the nature of dark matter and discover itsnon-gravitational interactions with ordinary matter, we propose an experimentusing a \pbo ~calorimeter to search for or set new limits on the productionrate of i) hidden sector particles in the $3 - 60$ MeV mass range via their$e^+e^-$ decay (or $\gamma\gamma$ decay with limited tracking), and ii) thehypothetical X17 particle, claimed in multiple recent experiments. The searchfor these particles is motivated by new hidden sector models and dark mattercandidates introduced to account for a variety of experimental andobservational puzzles: the small-scale structure puzzle in cosmologicalsimulations, anomalies such as the 4.2$\sigma$ disagreement between experimentsand the standard model prediction for the muon anomalous magnetic moment, andthe excess of $e^+e^-$ pairs from the $^8$Be M1 and $^4$He nuclear transitionsto their ground states observed by the ATOMKI group. In these models, the $1 -100$ MeV mass range is particularly well-motivated and the lower part of thisrange still remains unexplored. Our proposed direct detection experiment willuse a magnetic-spectrometer-free setup (the PRad apparatus) to detect all threefinal state particles in the visible decay of a hidden sector particle allowingfor an effective control of the background and will cover the proposed massrange in a single setting. The use of the well-demonstrated PRad setup allowsfor an essentially ready-to-run and uniquely cost-effective search for hiddensector particles in the $3 - 60$ MeV mass range with a sensitivity of8.9$\times$10$^{-8}$ - 5.8$\times$10$^{-9}$ to $\epsilon^2$, the square of thekinetic mixing interaction constant between hidden and visible sectors. Thisupdated proposal includes our response to the PAC49 comments.

We report a systematic measurement of cumulants, Cn, for net-proton, proton, and antiproton multiplicity distributions, and correlation functions, κn, for proton and antiproton multiplicity distributions up to the fourth order in Au+Au collisions at sNN=7.7, 11.5, 14.5, 19.6, 27, 39, 54.4, 62.4, and 200 GeV. The Cn and κn are presented as a function of collision energy, centrality and kinematic acceptance in rapidity, y, and transverse momentum, pT. The data were taken during the first phase of the Beam Energy Scan (BES) program (2010-2017) at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) facility. The measurements are carried out at midrapidity (|y|< 0.5) and transverse momentum 0.4

UCGretina, a GEANT4 simulation of the GRETINA gamma-ray tracking array of highly-segmented high-purity germanium detectors is described. We have developed a model of the array, in particular of the Quad Module and the capsules, that gives good agreement between simulated and measured photopeak efficiencies over a broad range of gamma-ray energies and reproduces the shape of the measured Compton continuum. Both of these features are needed in order to accurately extract gamma-ray yields from spectra collected in in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy measurements with beams traveling at v∕c≳0.3 at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory and the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams. In the process of developing the model, we determined that millimeter-scale layers of passive germanium surrounding the active volumes of the simulated crystals must be included in order to reproduce measured photopeak efficiencies. We adopted a simple model of effective passive layers and developed heuristic methods of determining passive-layer thicknesses by comparison of simulations and measurements for a single crystal and for the full array. Prospects for future development of the model are discussed.

Using combined data from the Relativistic Heavy Ion and Large Hadron Colliders, we constrain the shear and bulk viscosities of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) at temperatures of ∼150-350  MeV. We use Bayesian inference to translate experimental and theoretical uncertainties into probabilistic constraints for the viscosities. With Bayesian model averaging we propagate an estimate of the model uncertainty generated by the transition from hydrodynamics to hadron transport in the plasma's final evolution stage, providing the most reliable phenomenological constraints to date on the QGP viscosities.

Associated particle imaging (API) is a non-destructive nuclear technique for the 3D determination of isotopic distributions. By detecting the alpha particle associated with the emitted neutron in the deuterium-tritium fusion reaction with a position- and time-resolving detector, the direction of the 14.1 MeV neutron and its time of emission can be determined. Employing this method, isotope characteristic gamma rays emitted in inelastic neutron scattering events can be correlated with the neutron interaction location. An API system consisting of a sealed-type neutron generator, gamma detectors, and a position-sensitive alpha detector was designed, constructed, and characterized. The system was tested with common soil elements and shown to be sensitive to 12C, 16O, 28Si, 27Al, and 56Fe. New aspects of our approach are the use of a yttrium-aluminum-perovskite scintillator, using a sapphire window instead of a fiber-optic faceplate for light transport to the photomultiplier, and the all-digital data acquisition system. We present a description of the system with simulations and experimental results that show a position resolution on the alpha detector of 1 mm, a depth resolution using a LaBr3 detector of 6.2 cm, and an angular resolution of 4.5°. Additionally, we present single-element gamma response measurements for the elements mentioned above together with a comparison to Monte Carlo simulations (MCNP6).

In 2018, the STAR collaboration collected data from 4496Ru+4496Ru and 4096Zr+4096Zr at sNN=200 GeV to search for the presence of the chiral magnetic effect in collisions of nuclei. The isobar collision species alternated frequently between 4496Ru+4496Ru and 4096Zr+4096Zr. In order to conduct blind analyses of studies related to the chiral magnetic effect in these isobar data, STAR developed a three-step blind analysis procedure. Analysts are initially provided a “reference sample” of data, comprised of a mix of events from the two species, the order of which respects time-dependent changes in run conditions. After tuning analysis codes and performing time-dependent quality assurance on the reference sample, analysts are provided a species-blind sample suitable for calculating efficiencies and corrections for individual ≈ 30 -min data-taking runs. For this sample, species-specific information is disguised, but individual output files contain data from a single isobar species. Only run-by-run corrections and code alteration subsequent to these corrections are allowed at this stage. Following these modifications, the “frozen” code is passed over the fully un-blind data, completing the blind analysis. As a check of the feasibility of the blind analysis procedure, analysts completed a “mock data challenge,” analyzing data from Au + Au collisions at sNN=27 GeV, collected in 2018. The Au + Au data were prepared in the same manner intended for the isobar blind data. The details of the blind analysis procedure and results from the mock data challenge are presented.

We study the properties of the strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma with a multistage model of heavy-ion collisions that combines the TRENTo initial condition ansatz, free-streaming, viscous relativistic hydrodynamics, and a relativistic hadronic transport. A model-to-data comparison with Bayesian inference is performed, revisiting assumptions made in previous studies. The role of parameter priors is studied in light of their importance for the interpretation of results. We emphasize the use of closure tests to perform extensive validation of the analysis workflow before comparison with observations. Our study combines measurements from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), achieving a good simultaneous description of a wide range of hadronic observables from both colliders. The selected experimental data provide reasonable constraints on the shear and the bulk viscosities of the quark-gluon plasma at T≈ 150-250 MeV, but their constraining power degrades at higher temperatures, T 250 MeV. Furthermore, these viscosity constraints are found to depend significantly on how viscous corrections are handled in the transition from hydrodynamics to the hadronic transport. Several other model parameters, including the free-streaming time, show similar model sensitivity, while the initial condition parameters associated with the TRENTo ansatz are quite robust against variations of the particlization prescription. We also report on the sensitivity of individual observables to the various model parameters. Finally, Bayesian model selection is used to quantitatively compare the agreement with measurements for different sets of model assumptions, including different particlization models and different choices for which parameters are allowed to vary between RHIC and LHC energies.

We report high-precision measurements of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry, ALL, for midrapidity inclusive jet and dijet production in polarized pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of s=200 GeV. The new inclusive jet data are sensitive to the gluon helicity distribution, Δg(x,Q2), for gluon momentum fractions in the range from x≃0.05 to x≃0.5, while the new dijet data provide further constraints on the x dependence of Δg(x,Q2). The results are in good agreement with previous measurements at s=200 GeV and with recent theoretical evaluations of prior world data. Our new results have better precision and thus strengthen the evidence that Δg(x,Q2) is positive for x>0.05.

The deep underground neutrino experiment (DUNE), a 40-kton underground liquid argon time projection chamber experiment, will be sensitive to the electron-neutrino flavor component of the burst of neutrinos expected from the next Galactic core-collapse supernova. Such an observation will bring unique insight into the astrophysics of core collapse as well as into the properties of neutrinos. The general capabilities of DUNE for neutrino detection in the relevant few- to few-tens-of-MeV neutrino energy range will be described. As an example, DUNE’s ability to constrain the νe spectral parameters of the neutrino burst will be considered.

We report high-precision measurements of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry, ALL, for midrapidity inclusive jet and dijet production in polarized pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of s=200 GeV. The new inclusive jet data are sensitive to the gluon helicity distribution, Δg(x,Q2), for gluon momentum fractions in the range from x≃0.05 to x≃0.5, while the new dijet data provide further constraints on the x dependence of Δg(x,Q2). The results are in good agreement with previous measurements at s=200 GeV and with recent theoretical evaluations of prior world data. Our new results have better precision and thus strengthen the evidence that Δg(x,Q2) is positive for x>0.05.

We measured two-neutrino double beta decay of ^{130}Te using an exposure of 300.7 kg yr accumulated with the CUORE detector. Using a Bayesian analysis to fit simulated spectra to experimental data, it was possible to disentangle all the major background sources and precisely measure the two-neutrino contribution. The half-life is in agreement with past measurements with a strongly reduced uncertainty: T_{1/2}^{2ν}=7.71_{-0.06}^{+0.08}(stat)_{-0.15}^{+0.12}(syst)×10^{20}  yr. This measurement is the most precise determination of the ^{130}Te 2νββ decay half-life to date.

The projected sensitivity of the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment to two-neutrinoand neutrinoless double beta decay of $^{134}$Xe is presented. LZ is a 10-tonnexenon time projection chamber optimized for the detection of dark matterparticles, that is expected to start operating in 2021 at Sanford UndergroundResearch Facility, USA. Its large mass of natural xenon provides an exceptionalopportunity to search for the double beta decay of $^{134}$Xe, for which xenondetectors enriched in $^{136}$Xe are less effective. For the two-neutrino decaymode, LZ is predicted to exclude values of the half-life up to1.7$\times$10$^{24}$ years at 90% confidence level (CL), and has a three-sigmaobservation potential of 8.7$\times$10$^{23}$ years, approaching thepredictions of nuclear models. For the neutrinoless decay mode LZ, is projectedto exclude values of the half-life up to 7.3$\times$10$^{24}$ years at 90% CL.

Global polarization of Ξ and Ω hyperons has been measured for the first time in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200  GeV. The measurements of the Ξ^{-} and Ξ[over ¯]^{+} hyperon polarization have been performed by two independent methods, via analysis of the angular distribution of the daughter particles in the parity violating weak decay Ξ→Λ+π, as well as by measuring the polarization of the daughter Λ hyperon, polarized via polarization transfer from its parent. The polarization, obtained by combining the results from the two methods and averaged over Ξ^{-} and Ξ[over ¯]^{+}, is measured to be ⟨P_{Ξ}⟩=0.47±0.10(stat)±0.23(syst)% for the collision centrality 20%-80%. The ⟨P_{Ξ}⟩ is found to be slightly larger than the inclusive Λ polarization and in reasonable agreement with a multiphase transport model. The ⟨P_{Ξ}⟩ is found to follow the centrality dependence of the vorticity predicted in the model, increasing toward more peripheral collisions. The global polarization of Ω, ⟨P_{Ω}⟩=1.11±0.87(stat)±1.97(syst)% was obtained by measuring the polarization of daughter Λ in the decay Ω→Λ+K, assuming the polarization transfer factor C_{ΩΛ}=1.

The KamLAND-Zen 800 experiment is searching for the neutrinoless double-betadecay of $^{136}$Xe by using $^{136}$Xe-loaded liquid scintillator. The liquidscintillator is enclosed inside a balloon made of thin, transparent,low-radioactivity film that we call Inner Balloon (IB). The IB, apart fromguaranteeing the liquid containment, also allows to minimize the backgroundfrom cosmogenic muon-spallation products and $^{8}$B solar neutrinos. Indeedthese events could contribute to the total counts in the region of interestaround the Q-value of the double-beta decay of $^{136}$Xe. In this paper, wepresent an overview of the IB and describe the various steps of itscommissioning minimizing the radioactive contaminations, from the materialselection, to the fabrication of the balloon and its installation inside theKamLAND detector. Finally, we show the impact of the IB on the KamLANDbackground as measured by the KamLAND detector itself.

The STAR collaboration reports a measurement of the transverse single-spin asymmetries, AN, for neutral pions produced in polarized proton collisions with protons (pp), with aluminum nuclei (pAl) and with gold nuclei (pAu) at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV. Neutral pions are observed in the forward direction relative to the transversely polarized proton beam, in the pseudorapidity region 2.7

Despite being the feeblest and lightest of the known particles, the neutrinois one of the most abundant particles in the Universe and has played a criticalrole in its evolution. Within standard cosmological models, most of theneutrinos were produced in the Big Bang and completely decoupled from matterafter the first second. During that short time it is possible that through theprocess of Leptogenesis neutrinos helped to produce the matter/anti-matterasymmetry that sets the stage for all of the structures that we see in theuniverse today. However, these theories generally require the condition thatthe neutrino is a so-called Majorana particle, acting as its own anti-particle.The search for the extremely rare neutrinoless double-beta $(0\nu\beta\beta)$decay is currently the most practical way to address this question. Here wepresent the results of the first tonne-year exposure search for$0\nu\beta\beta$ decay of $^{130}$Te with CUORE. With a median half-lifeexclusion sensitivity of $2.8\times10^{25}$ yr, this is the most sensitivesearch for $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay in $^{130}$Te to date. We find no evidencefor $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay and set a lower bound of $T_{1/2} >2.2\times10^{25}$ yr at a 90% credibility interval. CUORE is the largest,coldest solid-state detector operating below 100mK in the world. Theachievement of 1 tonne-year of exposure demonstrates the long-term reliabilityand potential of cryogenic technology at this scale, with wide rangingapplications to next-generation rare-event searches, dark matter searches, andeven large-scale quantum computing.

We investigate the effect of soft gluon radiations on the azimuthal angle correlation between the total and relative momenta of two jets in inclusive and exclusive dijet processes. We show that the final state effect induces a sizable cos(2ϕ) anisotropy due to gluon emissions near the jet cones. The phenomenological consequences of this observation are discussed for various collider experiments, including diffractive processes in ultraperipheral pA and AA collisions, inclusive and diffractive dijet production at the EIC, and inclusive dijet in pp and AA collisions at the LHC.

Previous measurements revealed a strong modification to dihadron azimuthal correlations in Au+Au collisions with respect to p+p and d+Au collisions. The modification increases with the collision centrality, suggesting a path-length or energy density dependence to the jet-quenching effect. This paper reports STAR measurements of dihadron azimuthal correlations in mid-central (20%-60%) Au+Au collisions at GeV as a function of the trigger particle's azimuthal angle relative to the event plane, . The azimuthal correlation is studied as a function of both the trigger and associated particle . The subtractions of the combinatorial background and anisotropic flow, assuming Zero Yield At Minimum (ZYAM), are described. The correlation results are first discussed with subtraction of the even harmonic (elliptic and quadrangular) flow backgrounds. The away-side correlation is strongly modified, and the modification varies with , with a double-peak structure for out-of-plane trigger particles. The near-side ridge (long range pseudo-rapidity correlation) appears to drop with increasing while the jet-like component remains approximately constant. The correlation functions are further studied with the subtraction of odd harmonic triangular flow background arising from fluctuations. It is found that the triangular flow, while responsible for the majority of the amplitudes, is not sufficient to explain the -dependence of the ridge or the away-side double-peak structure. The dropping ridge with could be attributed to a -dependent elliptic anisotropy; however, the physics mechanism of the ridge remains an open question. Even with a -dependent elliptic flow, the away-side correlation structure is robust. These results, with extensive systematic studies of the dihadron correlations as a function of , trigger and associated particle , and the pseudo-rapidity range , should provide stringent inputs to help understand the underlying physics mechanisms of jet-medium interactions in high energy nuclear collisions.

We measured two-neutrino double beta decay of ^{130}Te using an exposure of 300.7 kg yr accumulated with the CUORE detector. Using a Bayesian analysis to fit simulated spectra to experimental data, it was possible to disentangle all the major background sources and precisely measure the two-neutrino contribution. The half-life is in agreement with past measurements with a strongly reduced uncertainty: T_{1/2}^{2ν}=7.71_{-0.06}^{+0.08}(stat)_{-0.15}^{+0.12}(syst)×10^{20}  yr. This measurement is the most precise determination of the ^{130}Te 2νββ decay half-life to date.

The first measurement of longitudinal decorrelations of harmonic flow amplitudes v_{n} for n=2-4 in Xe+Xe collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.44  TeV is obtained using 3  μb^{-1} of data with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The decorrelation signal for v_{3} and v_{4} is found to be nearly independent of collision centrality and transverse momentum (p_{T}) requirements on final-state particles, but for v_{2} a strong centrality and p_{T} dependence is seen. When compared with the results from Pb+Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV, the longitudinal decorrelation signal in midcentral Xe+Xe collisions is found to be larger for v_{2}, but smaller for v_{3}. Current hydrodynamic models reproduce the ratios of the v_{n} measured in Xe+Xe collisions to those in Pb+Pb collisions but fail to describe the magnitudes and trends of the ratios of longitudinal flow decorrelations between Xe+Xe and Pb+Pb. The results on the system-size dependence provide new insights and an important lever arm to separate effects of the longitudinal structure of the initial state from other early and late time effects in heavy-ion collisions.

We apply perturbative QCD to investigate the near threshold heavy quarkoniumphotoproduction at large momentum transfer. From an explicit calculation, weshow that the conventional power counting method will be modified and the threequark Fock state with nonzero orbital angular momentum dominates the nearthreshold production. It carries a power behavior of $1/(-t)^5$ for thedifferential cross section. We further comment on the impact of our results onthe interpretation of the experiment measurement in terms of the gluonicgravitational form factors of the proton.

We report measurements of the parity-conserving beam-normal single-spinelastic scattering asymmetries $B_n$ on $^{12}$C and $^{27}$Al, obtained withan electron beam polarized transverse to its momentum direction. Thesemeasurements add an additional kinematic point to a series of previousmeasurements of $B_n$ on $^{12}$C and provide a first measurement on $^{27}$Al.The experiment utilized the Qweak apparatus at Jefferson Lab with a beam energyof 1.158 GeV. The average lab scattering angle for both targets was 7.7degrees, and the average $Q^2$ for both targets was 0.02437 GeV$^2$ (Q=0.1561GeV). The asymmetries are $B_n$ = -10.68 $\pm$ 0.90 stat) $\pm$ 0.57 (syst) ppmfor $^{12}$C and $B_n$ = -12.16 $\pm$ 0.58 (stat) $\pm$ 0.62 (syst) ppm for$^{27}$Al. The results are consistent with theoretical predictions, and arecompared to existing data. When scaled by Z/A, the Q-dependence of all thefar-forward angle (theta < 10 degrees) data from $^{1}$H to $^{27}$Al can bedescribed by the same slope out to $Q \approx 0.35$ GeV. Larger-angle data fromother experiments in the same Q range are consistent with a slope about twiceas steep.

We present new precision measurements of the elastic electron-protonscattering cross section for momentum transfer (Q$^2$) up to 15.75~\gevsq.Combined with existing data, these provide an improved extraction of the protonmagnetic form factor at high Q$^2$ and double the range over which alongitudinal/transverse separation of the cross section can be performed. Thedifference between our results and polarization data agrees with that observedat lower Q$^2$ and attributed to hard two-photon exchange (TPE) effects,extending to 8~(GeV/c)$^2$ the range of Q$^2$ for which a discrepancy isestablished at $>$95\% confidence. We use the discrepancy to quantify the sizeof TPE contributions needed to explain the cross section at high Q$^2$.

Imperfections in analog-to-digital conversion (ADC) cannot be ignored when signal digitization requirements demand both wide dynamic range and high resolution, as is the case for the Majorana Demonstrator 76Ge neutrinoless double-beta decay search. Enabling the experiment's high-resolution spectral analysis and efficient pulse shape discrimination required careful measurement and correction of ADC nonlinearities. A simple measurement protocol was developed that did not require sophisticated equipment or lengthy data-taking campaigns. A slope-dependent hysteresis was observed and characterized. A correction applied to digitized waveforms prior to signal processing reduced the differential and integral nonlinearities by an order of magnitude, eliminating these as dominant contributions to the systematic energy uncertainty at the double-beta decay Q value.

Background: A number of accelerator-based isotope production facilities utilize 100- to 200-MeV proton beams due to the high production rates enabled by high-intensity beam capabilities and the greater diversity of isotope production brought on by the long range of high-energy protons. However, nuclear reaction modeling at these energies can be challenging because of the interplay between different reaction modes and a lack of existing guiding cross-section data. Purpose: A Tri-lab collaboration has been formed among the Lawrence Berkeley, Los Alamos, and Brookhaven National Laboratories to address these complexities by characterizing charged-particle nuclear reactions relevant to the production of established and novel radioisotopes. Method: In the inaugural collaboration experiments, stacked-targets of niobium foils were irradiated at the Brookhaven Linac Isotope Producer (Ep=200MeV) and the Los Alamos Isotope Production Facility (Ep=100MeV) to measure Nb93(p,x) cross sections between 50 and 200 MeV. First measurements of the Nb93(p,4n)Mo90 beam monitor reaction beyond 100 MeV are reported in this work, as part of the broadest energy-spanning dataset for the reaction to date. Nb93(p,x) production cross sections are additionally reported for 22 other measured residual products. The measured cross-section results were compared with literature data as well as the default calculations of the nuclear model codes TALYS, CoH, EMPIRE, and ALICE. Results: The default code predictions largely failed to reproduce the measurements, with consistent underestimation of the preequilibrium emission. Therefore, we developed a standardized procedure that determines the reaction model parameters that best reproduce the most prominent reaction channels in a physically justifiable manner. The primary focus of the procedure was to determine the best parametrization for the preequilibrium two-component exciton model via a comparison to the energy-dependent Nb93(p,x) data, as well as previously published La139(p,x) cross sections. Conclusions: This modeling study revealed a trend toward a relative decrease for internal transition rates at intermediate proton energies (Ep=20-60 MeV) in the current exciton model as compared to the default values. The results of this work are instrumental for the planning, execution, and analysis essential to isotope production.

CUPID-Mo is a cryogenic detector array designed to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay (0νββ) of 100Mo. It uses 20 scintillating 100Mo-enriched Li2MoO4 bolometers instrumented with Ge light detectors to perform active suppression of α backgrounds, drastically reducing the expected background in the 0νββ signal region. As a result, pileup events and small detector instabilities that mimic normal signals become non-negligible potential backgrounds. These types of events can in principle be eliminated based on their signal shapes, which are different from those of regular bolometric pulses. We show that a purely data-driven principal component analysis based approach is able to filter out these anomalous events, without the aid of detector response simulations.

Theoretical models often differ significantly from measured data in their predictions of the magnitude of nuclear reactions that produce radionuclides for medical, research, and national security applications. In this paper, we compare a priori predictions from several state-of-the-art reaction modeling packages (CoH, EMPIRE, TALYS, and ALICE) to cross sections measured using the stacked-target activation method. The experiment was performed using the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory 88-Inch Cyclotron with beams of 25 and 55 MeV protons on a stack of iron, copper, and titanium foils. Thirty-four excitation functions were measured from 4–55 MeV, including the first measurement of the independent cross sections for natFe (p,x)49 , 51Cr , 51 , 52 m , 52 g , 56Mn , and 58 m , 58 gCo. All of the models, using default input parameters to assess their predictive capabilities, failed to reproduce the isomer-to-ground state ratio for reaction channels at compound and pre-compound energies, suggesting issues in modeling the deposition or distribution of angular momentum in these residual nuclei.

This paper describes a measurement of light-by-light scattering based on Pb+Pb collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment during Run 2 of the LHC. The study uses 2.2 nb−1 of integrated luminosity collected in 2015 and 2018 at sNN = 5.02 TeV. Light-by-light scattering candidates are selected in events with two photons produced exclusively, each with transverse energy ETγ> 2.5 GeV, pseudorapidity |ηγ| < 2.37, diphoton invariant mass mγγ> 5 GeV, and with small diphoton transverse momentum and diphoton acoplanarity. The integrated and differential fiducial cross sections are measured and compared with theoretical predictions. The diphoton invariant mass distribution is used to set limits on the production of axion-like particles. This result provides the most stringent limits to date on axion-like particle production for masses in the range 6–100 GeV. Cross sections above 2 to 70 nb are excluded at the 95% CL in that mass interval. [Figure not available: see fulltext.]

The beam energy scan (BES) program at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) was extended to energies below sNN=7.7 GeV in 2015 by successful implementation of the fixed-target mode of operation in the STAR (Solenoidal Tracker At RHIC) experiment. In this mode, ions circulate in one ring of the collider and interact with a stationary target at the entrance of the STAR time projection chamber. The first results for Au+Au collisions at sNN=4.5 GeV are presented, demonstrating good performance of all the relevant detector subsystems in fixed-target mode. Results presented here include directed and elliptic flow of identified hadrons, and radii from pion femtoscopy. The latter, together with recent HADES results, reveal a long-sought peak structure that may be caused by the system evolving through a first-order phase transition from quark-gluon plasma to the hadronic phase. Directed and elliptic flow for pions are presented for the first time at this beam energy. Pion and proton elliptic flow show behavior which hints at constituent quark scaling, and demonstrate that a definitive conclusion will be achievable using the full statistics of the ongoing second phase of BES (BES-II). In particular, BES-II to date has recorded fixed-target data sets with two orders of magnitude more events at each of nine energies between sNN=3.0 and 7.7 GeV.

The E12-14-012 experiment, performed in Jefferson Lab Hall A, has collected exclusive electron-scattering data (e,e′p) in parallel kinematics using natural argon and natural titanium targets. Here we report the first results of the analysis of the data set corresponding to beam energy 2222 GeV, electron scattering angle 21.5∘, and proton emission angle -50∘. The differential cross sections, measured with ≈4% uncertainty, have been studied as a function of missing energy and missing momentum, and compared to the results of Monte Carlo simulations, obtained from a model based on the distorted-wave impulse approximation.

The yield of charged particles opposite to a Z boson with large transverse momentum (p_{T}) is measured in 260  pb^{-1} of pp and 1.7  nb^{-1} of Pb+Pb collision data at 5.02 TeV per nucleon pair recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The Z boson tag is used to select hard-scattered partons with specific kinematics, and to observe how their showers are modified as they propagate through the quark-gluon plasma created in Pb+Pb collisions. Compared with pp collisions, charged-particle yields in Pb+Pb collisions show significant modifications as a function of charged-particle p_{T} in a way that depends on event centrality and Z boson p_{T}. The data are compared with a variety of theoretical calculations and provide new information about the medium-induced energy loss of partons in a p_{T} regime difficult to measure through other channels.

The proposed electron-ion collider has a rich physics program to study theinternal structure of protons and heavy nuclei. This program will impose strictrequirements on detector design. This paper explores how these requirements canbe satisfied using an all-silicon tracking detector, by consideration of threerepresentative probes: heavy flavor hadrons, jets, and exclusive vector mesons.
