Background: Novel β-lactam antibiotics as well as other kinds of antibiotics have been used to treat complicated urinary tract infections (cUTIs); however, their efficacy and safety remain controversial. Objective: We conducted a systematic review with meta-analysis to explore the efficacy and safety of novel β-lactam antibiotics versus other antibiotics against cUTIs. Methods: PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were searched systematically from inception through 15 March 2024 for clinical trials comparing novel β-lactam antibiotics with other antibiotics for treatment of cUTIs. Random-effects models were used to evaluate the impact of treatment on the risk ratio (RR) of clinical response, microbiologic response, adverse effects (AEs), serious adverse effects (SAEs). The quality of evidence was evaluated with the Cochrane Risk of Bias assessment tool. The review was registered in INPLASY (INPLASY202440054). Results: Ten randomized controlled trials involving 5, 925 patients met our inclusion criteria. Our meta-analysis revealed that there was no significant difference in overall clinical response (RR = 1.02), AEs (RR = 1.07), SAEs (RR = 1.20) between novel β-lactam antibiotics groups and other antibiotics groups. However, a significant difference was found in a subgroup of clinical cure rates at the end of treatment between novel β-lactam antibiotics groups and carbapenems groups, with low heterogeneity (RR = 1.02). A significant difference was observed in microbiologic response (RR = 1.11). Subgroup analysis revealed a significant difference in microbiologic response between novel BBL/BLS groups and carbapenems groups (RR = 1.13, I² = 21%, P = 0.005). Differences was observed between novel BBL/BLS groups and piperacillin/tazobactam sodium groups (RR = 1.21, I² = 70%, P = 0.02). Similar results were obtained from subgroup analysis of the difference in microbiologic response between novel β-lactam antibiotics groups and ertapenem groups (RR = 0.92, I² = 0, P = 0.01). Conclusion: Novel β-lactam antibiotics had similar overall clinical cure, AEs, SAE, to other antibiotics in the treatment of cUTIs. However, novel β-lactam antibiotics demonstrated superior clinical cure rates compared to carbapenems in a subgroup analysis, and exhibited better microbiologic response than other antibiotics. Background: The thoracic corpectomy is a well-described technique for the surgical treatment of vertebral column fractures with spinal canal compromise. Traditionally, the posterolateral approach to this procedure required the removal of the approach side rib in order to introduce the corpectomy cage. This rib removal, however, has been identified as a major contributor to post-operative morbidity. Rib-sparing techniques have been shown to be beneficial in minimizing post-operative morbidity in non-spinal surgeries. Herein, we present a previously undescribed technique of a rib-sparing thoracic corpectomy that avoids sequalae of rib resection with assistance from an ultrasonic bone scalpel (UBS). Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted on patients having undergone this thoracic corpectomy technique. Data on patient age at operation, indication for surgery, number of corpectomies per case, estimated blood loss (EBL), operative time (OT), intra-operative complications, and post-operative length of stay (LOS) were collected and analyzed. A pictorial step-by-step guide was created to highlight the advantages of an entirely posterior rib-sparing unilateral transpedicular technique for thoracic corpectomy. Results: A total of 36 corpectomies were performed on 32 patients between August 2015 and March 2023. Patients ages ranged from 17 to 85 years (mean = 63). The most common indication was oncological (n = 22, 69%), followed by degenerative/traumatic deformity (n = 7, 22%), and infection (n = 3, 9%). For the cases for which data was accessible, mean EBL was 853 cc and mean OT was 178 min. The average post-operative LOS was 6.5 days. Conclusion: The described surgical approach makes it possible to create a transpedicular corridor with no costectomy for implantation of an expandable titanium cage and anterior column reconstruction. The use of the UBS in this approach is critical as it minimizes bony removal and avoids sequelae of rib resection. The described technique has the potential to circumvent post-costectomy pain, thereby expediting post-operative recovery after thoracic corpectomy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A 24/7 AI sound-based coughing monitoring system was applied in combination with oral fluids (OFs) and bioaerosol (AS)-based screening for respiratory pathogens in a conventional pig nursery. The objective was to assess the additional value of the AI to identify disease patterns in association with molecular diagnostics to gain information on the etiology of respiratory distress in a multimicrobially infected pig population. Respiratory distress was measured 24/7 by the AI and compared to human observations. Screening for swine influenza A virus (swIAV), porcine reproductive and respiratory disease virus (PRRSV), Mycoplasma (M.) hyopneumoniae, Actinobacillus (A.) pleuropneumoniae, and porcine circovirus 2 (PCV2) was conducted using qPCR. Except for M. hyopneumoniae, all of the investigated pathogens were detected within the study period. High swIAV-RNA loads in OFs and AS were significantly associated with a decrease in respiratory health, expressed by a respiratory health score calculated by the AI The odds of detecting PRRSV or A. pleuropneumoniae were significantly higher for OFs compared to AS. qPCR examinations of OFs revealed significantly lower Ct-values for swIAV and A. pleuropneumoniae compared to AS. In addition to acting as an early warning system, AI gained respiratory health data combined with laboratory diagnostics, can indicate the etiology of respiratory distress. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DRUG development , *DRUG delivery systems , *DRUGS - Abstract
In the past few decades, considerable attention has been focused on the development of novel drug delivery system (NDDS). The NDDS should ideally fulfil two prerequisites. Firstly, it should deliver the drug at a rate directed by the needs of the body, over the period of treatment. Secondly, it should channel the active entity to the site of action. Conventional dosage forms including prolonged release dosage forms are unable to meet none of these. At present, no available drug delivery system behaves ideally, but sincere attempts have been made to achieve them through various novel approaches in drug delivery. In the present review attempt was made to highlight the formulation consideration, characterization and applications of Niosomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MARINE ecosystem management , *FISH population estimates , *POLYMERASE chain reaction , *MARINE ecology , *BIOMASS - Abstract
Quantifying the biomass, or number of individuals, diversity, and distribution of marine species is a critical aspect of understanding and managing marine ecosystems. In recent years, there has been growing interest in using environmental DNA (eDNA) for marine ecosystem management and biodiversity assessment. However, the main challenge hindering eDNA applicability has been the inability to infer absolute species abundances from multispecies analysis (eDNA metabarcoding). In this study, we demonstrate a way forward by estimating the abundance of commercially important fish species in a Norwegian fjord using a joint Bayesian statistical model of traditional trawl-catch data and molecular data derived from eDNA. Using this model, we accurately predict out-of-sample trawl catches using eDNA alone. Moreover, our model provides empirical estimates for key processes linking marine eDNA concentration to the fish population abundance estimated from trawl observations, including trawl catchability, DNA shedding, degradation, dilution, transport, recovery rate, and isolation efficiency. These processes, including amplification efficiencies correcting for Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) bias, are species-specific and enable the translation of eDNA metabarcoding data into abundances. These findings have broad implications for the use of eDNA in marine ecosystem management and conservation efforts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DWELLINGS , *DIGITAL technology , *CREATIVE ability , *LABOR , *FORCES of production - Abstract
This essay examines the relationship between the novel and everyday life. Rather than focusing on the qualities of routineness and mundaneness that are often taken to typify the everyday, I approach everyday life here as a form of experience that is defined in opposition to expert knowledge. In doing so, I draw on the theories of everyday life articulated by Henri Lefebvre and Michel de Certeau, but I also suggest that Hegel's description of the prosaicness of civil society in Aesthetics anticipates these later accounts of the everyday as a corollary of the modern division of labor. In this perspective, the everydayness of the novel consists in its own unspecialized amateurishness as a genre of discourse, but also in its ability to represent a social world fragmented into expert fields. For some nineteenth-century observers, I suggest, including Hegel, the novel's ability to describe such complex modern societies was also one of the characteristics of prose itself. I examine this conception of prose style more closely in the essay's concluding section, which focuses on two scenes from the maritime fiction of Joseph Conrad. Conrad is often associated with technical nautical expertise, but the episodes that I discuss emphasize the porous boundaries that separate expert fields from one another and from their chaotic surrounding environments. In dwelling on these liminal moments, Conrad's fiction bears witness to the condition of everyday life as Lefebvre and de Certeau describe it--a medium that is constituted by the enclosures of modern expertise, but which also exceeds and envelops them. LITERARY criticism , *LITERARY movements - Abstract
In this article, we develop a framework for the analysis of 'movement' in literary texts. We focus on characters, translation and transmission, thereby going beyond, on the one hand, a stylistic analysis of individual passages, and, on the other hand, the linear enchainment of scenes and summaries underlying much of the narratological discussions around movement, speed and pace. We will develop this framework through a discussion of the character Camilla in Vergil's Aeneid: Book XI, Gavin Douglas's Eneados (1513) and John Dryden's Aeneis (1698). Both the version stylistically close to Vergil (Dryden) and the one that is stylistically looser (Douglas) allow for a discussion of movement that takes the principle beyond a primary concern with style. In a final step, we move to the contemporary example of Ursula Le Guin's Lavinia (2008) in order to investigate how 'movement' translates from the epic to the novel. Movement, as we shall show, can be analysed as movement of plot, movement of thought, and movement of figure in narrative. The framework that we propose allows for the principled discussion of transgeneric transfer of narratives, here between epic and novel, as well as the comparison of texts from different moments of literary history between the Middle Ages, the Early Modern period and the present day. - Abstract
A novel grapevine viroid was discovered in an asymptomatic grapevine of Indian rootstocks. The whole genome sequence of the viroid (370 nt) was determined by high-throughput sequencing as well as RT-PCR followed by cloning and Sanger sequencing. The terminal conserved region (TCR), central conserved region (CCR) upper strand, and CCR lower strand are conserved regions found in the viroid that are unique to the members of the genus Apscaviroid. Based on our findings and the demarcation criteria for viroids, the novel viroid, which we have tentatively named "grapevine yellow speckle viroid 3" is a putative new member of the genus Apscaviroid. COMPARATIVE literature ,CULTURAL awareness ,IMAGE representation ,ENGLISH literature ,AUTHORSHIP in literature - Abstract
Comparative literature expounds on the areas of convergence in literature and reproduces the cultural similarities between East and West, demonstrating its results in guiding literary and intellectual renewal movements. Arabic literature takes advantage of the works of literature of other nations and is always keen to develop and enrich its awareness and culture. As the novel is a celebrated genre used in the comparative literature area, the Egyptian novelist Naguib Mahfouz, well-known as the Dickens of Egypt, is one of the key poles of the international Arab novel. Mahfouz's novels and short stories convey Cairo, the capital of Egypt, its neighborhoods, inhabitants, and groceries to the home of every reader. The images and representations of Cairo drawn by Mahfouz are compared to the masters of English literature, namely Charles Dickens who significantly impacted Mahfouz's writings, especially his great love for describing and depicting everything his eyes see. With appropriating a comparative study of Dickens’s and Mahfouz’s selected works, this paper examines the concept of “description as a fiction-writing mode” as reflected in two literary works—Dickens’s David Copperfield (1850) and Mahfouz’s Midaq Alley (1947) following the School of Comparative Literature based on the principle of similarity in its study and analysis of literary works. - Abstract
The present study reports the complete genome of a novel monopartite begomovirus, named tentatively as "Citharexylum leaf curl virus" (CitLCuV), associated with leaf curl disease of Citharexylum spinosum in India. CitLCuV genome (2767 nucleotide) contained the typical genome organization of Old World begomoviruses and shared the maximum nucleotide sequence identity of 89.7% with a papaya leaf crumple virus (PaLCrV) isolate. In addition, two small non-canonical open reading frames (C5 and C6) were determined in the complementary strand of CitLCuV genome. Phylogenetic analysis revealed the relatedness of CitLCuV to PaLCrV and rose leaf curl virus. Recombination analysis detected a possible recombination event in CitLCuV genome. Based on begomovirus species demarcation criteria, CitLCuV can be regarded as a novel begomoviral species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The adaptation of novels to cinema causes problems between the novelist and the film producer. Although the novelist and the film producer are at the forefront in this relationship, there are also important actors such as the director, script writer, dialogue writer, who are essentially the authors of the film. However, considering the position of the film producer, it is accepted that the film producer is also responsible for the acts and actions of the authors of the cinematographic work. While the author wants that the movie is faithful to the book, the film producer wants to create a film that attracts the attention of the cinema audience, and the owners of the cinematographic work want to create a cinema work that bears their own characteristics within the scope of freedom of creation. In order to prevent disputes between the parties, a detailed assignment agreement must be concluded between the producer and the author of the novel, and the author of the novel must clearly specify the changes to be permitted by the author. Changes made without the author's authorisation will violate the right to make changes to the work. If the author has not given explicit permission to change the plot, characters, basic thoughts and feelings of the book within the scope of loyalty to the work, changing them is a violation of moral rights. - Abstract
Since folk culture and tradition are the unifying elements of society, they fall within the field of study of many disciplines. Folk culture, which is an important and fertile source especially for literary works, also stands out in novels with its concrete or abstract elements. Metin Savaş, one of the important names of the contemporary Turkish novel, utilizes many elements of folk culture in his novels, including folk tales, epics and epic elements, fairy tales, memorates, animals, plants, jinns, games, numbers and beliefs. Aware of the importance of connecting with tradition for a text, the author makes use of mythical elements of folk culture by updating them. Rewriting is the reconsideration of a previously created text and its interpretation or use with different evaluations and approaches. This text can be elements that exist and continue to exist in oral culture, or images and motifs that have been transformed into other forms. When a writer brings together the disparate elements taken from another writer into a coherent whole, organizes them and creates a harmony between them, and thus creates a new text, this is seen as a re-writing process. Literary transformation, on the other hand, is the transformation of an existing text into a literary text by observing the criteria of literariness. In this article, the elements of folk culture in Metin Savaş's novels are discussed in the context of intertextuality and it is tried to reveal how these elements are created through rewriting and literary transformation methods. This is a tribute to the Jewish literary critic Professor Leon Yudkin, who died in 2013. He was a prolific writer: the author of more than a dozen works and editor and co-editor of another five books. The range of his interests was prodigious, from individual writers like Shmuel Agnon, Joseph Roth and Else Lasker-Schüler to the Prague Circle, French feminist writers, German Expressionism and, above all, a series of authoritative surveys of Hebrew, Yiddish and Israeli literature. Much of this article focuses on his last book, posthumously published, Fiction Derailed: Form for the Modern (2020), an exploration of the modern novel. His greatest legacy was as a pioneer, someone who opened up the study of Jewish and especially Hebrew and Yiddish literature in the academy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Periodontitis and Diabetes Mellitus (DM) are two prevalent chronic conditions that are independently associated with dysregulated immune responses. The Triggering Receptor Expressed on Myeloid Cells 1 (TREM1) gene plays a crucial role in modulating immune responses and its dysregulation has been implicated in various inflammatory disorders. Aim: To investigate the expression levels of the TREM1 gene in healthy individuals as well as in those diagnosed with periodontitis, with and without DM, exploring the potential implications of the interplay between these conditions. Materials and Methods: In this ex-vivo study conducted at the Department of Periodontology, Saveetha Dental College and Hospital, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, from July 2023 to January 2024, gingival tissue samples were collected from three distinct groups: Group 1 (healthy individuals, n=10), Group 2 (periodontitis patients, n=10) and Group 3 (periodontitis patients with DM, n=10). Total Ribonucleic Acid (RNA) was extracted using a standardised protocol and complementary DNA (cDNA) synthesis was performed with a reverse transcription kit. Quantitative Real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) was employed to quantify TREM1 gene expression. An in-silico functional analysis was conducted to explore the possible mechanisms. Statistical analysis was performed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 27.0 (IBM Corp.) and GraphPad Prism 7.0 (GraphPad Software). A p-value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The analysis revealed distinct patterns of TREM1 gene expression among the three groups. In periodontitis patients, TREM1 expression was significantly upregulated compared to healthy controls (p<0.001). In periodontitis patients with DM, TREM1 expression was significantly downregulated compared to periodontitis patients (p-value=0.0003) and upregulated compared to healthy individuals, although not significantly (p-value=0.229). Conclusion: The analysis revealed distinct patterns of TREM1 gene expression among the three groups. Notably, there was a decrease in TREM1 gene expression levels in the periodontitis with diabetes group compared to the periodontitis group. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Désert (1980) is a landmark novel, first and foremost for personal reasons but also for its location at the junction of several French intellectual and aesthetic dynamics. The work marks a significant stage in Le Clézio's career as a writer. Whereas his previous novels, from Le Procès-verbal (1963) onwards, evoked contemporary (even futuristic) urban spaces and their perils, Désert (1980) is set between the desert of Morocco and the city of Marseille, from the early twentieth century to the 1970s. The novel engages Le Clézio's work in a more assertive representation of travel and foreign countries. It also encounters several French intellectual movements: a critical evaluation of colonization, growing ecological concerns, the evocation of the difficult migration from the Maghreb to France, and a fascination for the desert space. Considering all these elements, the paper proposes a socio-critical re-reading of this important novel. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hereditary factor VII (FVII) deficiency is an uncommon autosomal recessive disorder associated with mutations in the F7 gene, and laboratory investigations usually reveal isolated prolongation in prothrombin time (PT)/international normalized ratio (INR). Venom-induced consumptive coagulopathy (VICC) is distinguished by the activation of the coagulation pathway, which is triggered by procoagulant toxins in snake venom. Diagnosing snakebites in patients with hereditary FVII deficiency presents a challenge because prolonged time PT/INR is considered the most valuable diagnostic method for VICC. Therefore, it is possible that certain patients may not promptly receive an accurate diagnosis of hereditary FVII deficiency. We present a pedigree featuring hereditary FVII deficiency, which was diagnosed through Sanger sequencing, following a bamboo leaf green snake bite. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Importance: Infectious bursal disease (IBD) is an important viral poultry disease that vaccination can control. Objective: This study examined the immune protection of immune-complex (Vaccine A) and attenuated live (Vaccine B) IBD vaccines in specific-pathogen-free (SPF) chickens against a novel Malaysian variant IBD virus (vaIBDV) challenge. Methods: One-day-old (n =75) SPF chickens were divided randomly into the following three groups of 25 chicks each: Control, Vaccine A, and Vaccine B groups. The vaIBDV strain, UPM1432/2019, was used for the challenge at 21 and 28days post-vaccination (dpv). Five birds from unchallenged and challenged groups were sacrificed seven days post-challenge, and blood, bursa, spleen, and cloacal swabs were collected. The IBD antibodies (Abs), lymphoid lesions, and viral load were determined. Results: The UPM1432/2019 virus induced bursal damage in vaccinated SPF chickens despite Ab titers. The mean Ab titers of the Vaccine A challenged group were significantly lower (p < 0.002) than in the unchallenged group at 28 dpv. The bursal indices of the vaccinated unchallenged groups did not differ significantly from those of the vaccinated challenged groups (p = 0.94). Microscopically, the bursae of the challenged groups showed significant atrophy. The bursal lesion score was higher (p < 0.05) in the control and Vaccine B challenged groups than the Vaccine A challenged group. The challenged group had a higher viral load than the vaccinated groups (p < 0.001). Conclusions and Relevance: Neither vaccine fully protected against a vaIBDV challenge, highlighting the limitations of current vaccines and the need for further research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since ancient times, injustice in social life related to gender has become a frequent problem in society. Women are only objects and do not get equal rights in social life, education, and position before the law. Kahlil Gibran, a writer of the Mahjar Era from Lebanon, in the novel المتكسرة الأجنحة Al Ajnihah Al Mutakassirah (Broken Wings), raises the issue of women's helplessness against the influence of male power at that time. The character of Salma Karamy, the daughter of Faris Affandi, a wealthy man in Lebanon, is helpless in the face of the influence of the power of Bishop Bolus Galib who wants Faris's wealth by forcing the marriage of his nephew Mansour Bey Galib to Salma. Salma and Kahlil Gibran's love ran aground. This journal uses a qualitative-descriptive method to examine the novel المتكسرة الأجنحة Al Ajnihah Al Mutakassirah (Broken Wings) by Kahlil Gibran, in terms of feminism, especially liberal feminism according to Naomi Wolf. From the results of research and analysis of the novel الأجنحة المتكسرة Al Ajnihah Al Mutakassirah (Broken Wings) by Kahlil Gibran, it was found that the influence of religious leaders (Bishop Bolus Galib) was very large in social life in society. Women at that time lived oppressed, only as objects, and did not have equal rights with men. "A woman is like a commodity that is bought, offered, and moved from one house to another, then she will become like a piece of old furniture placed in a corner of darkness". [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Translating realia from Jordanian Arabic into Spanish has tremendous challenges and requires a culturally sensitive approach to preserve authenticity and contextual meaning. Realia, which encompass material elements of Jordanian culture, represents a rich and a complex layer of the language that goes beyond words. This study focuses on the importance of understanding the cultural and contextual nuances associated with Jordanian realia and offers specific strategies for its translation into Spanish. There is a real need to consider not only linguistic equivalences, but also cultural, social and emotional load of these elements in the target language to ensure full or at least enough comprehension. Through a detailed analysis of specific examples of Jordanian realia, (food and dress), this study shows how translators can meet the challenges of transferring these elements effectively. The decisions, taken during the translation process to maintain cultural authenticity, are explored, considering the linguistic diversity and regional nuances present in Jordanian Arabic. The need for cultural sensitivity and linguistic flexibility is emphasized to capture the essence of Jordanian realia in the target language without losing its underlying cultural meaning. Ultimately, this study highlights the importance of choosing the suitable procedure when translating realia. Based on the discussion of the selected examples to conduct the study, a couplet consisting of transliteration and footnotes is the recommended translational procedure to have a deep understanding of the source culture and the need to maintain a balance between preserving source text cultural values and accessibility for Spanish-speaking readers. Abstract Background The thoracic corpectomy is a well-described technique for the surgical treatment of vertebral column fractures with spinal canal compromise. Methods A retrospective chart review was conducted on patients having undergone this thoracic corpectomy technique. Results A total of 36 corpectomies were performed on 32 patients between August 2015 and March 2023. Conclusion The described surgical approach makes it possible to create a transpedicular corridor with no costectomy for implantation of an expandable titanium cage and anterior column reconstruction. The use of the UBS in this approach is critical as it minimizes bony removal and avoids sequelae of rib resection. The described technique has the potential to circumvent post-costectomy pain, thereby expediting post-operative recovery after thoracic corpectomy.

This study aims to describe the aspects of influence and identity shaping of female characters in the novel "Sayyidaat Alqomar" by Jokha Alharthi based on Ann Brooks' perspective. This research is oriented towards discussing three aspects, namely postfeminist deconstruction, differences, and women's identity. This type of research is descriptive qualitative research with feminist analysis. Data analysis techniques in this study use the Miles and Huberman method with three stages: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusions. The results of this study are as follows: (1) The influence of postfeminist deconstruction is identified in two aspects. First, gender equality in the relationship between husband and wife and inequality among women. Second, traditional stereotypes that female characters respond as representations of deconstruction with responses to ignore and voice criticism; (2) the differences that affect the identity of female characters are identified, that a woman can own both masculine and feminine sides; and (3) the form of female identity influenced by two factors. First, external factors: destiny and modernization. Second, experience factors: hobbies, work, and trauma. These findings confirm the diversity of Women’s identity in Modernization and pave the way for postfeminist studies towards Omani women.

This was a prospective, interventional, comparative study conducted on patients with congenital simple severe ptosis. A novel method of silicone rod fixation to the tarsus (tarsal tunnel technique, group 1) was done compared with a conventional technique of silicone rod fixation (suture fixation technique, group 2) in frontalis suspension surgery. A total of 30 patients were randomized into two groups of 15 patients each. Postoperatively, MRD1, vertical palpebral aperture, and eyelid fold height were comparable in both groups till the last follow-up with stability in eyelid position. Patient satisfaction scores showed similar results with good-fair satisfaction grading in 13 patients in group 1 and 11 patients in group 2 at 6 months follow-up. No significant complications occurred in either group. Tarsal tunnel fixation of silicone rods is a novel method in sling surgery with optimal cosmetic and function outcomes. Further long-term studies are needed to validate the results of the technique.

In periodontitis patients, TREM1 expression was significantly upregulated compared to healthy controls (p

NINETEENTH century , *NATURALISM , *PARABOLA , *NOVELISTS , *COLLECTIONS - Abstract
The article deals with Gabriele d'Annunzio's novelistic production in the last decade of the nineteenth century, the one extending from “Pleasure” (1889) to “The Flame” (1900). Having abandoned the veristic narrative examples used in the collections of novellas composed in the 1880s, and taken a clear field position against Zolian naturalism (by which he is also influenced), d'Annunzio opens his writing first to European simbolism (“Pleasure”), then to Russian models (“The Intruder”) and, starting from the last pages of the “Triumph of Death”, to Nietzschian superhomism, which will largely dominate the last two results (“The Virgins of the Rocks”, “The Flame”). This path is partly influenced by the author's attempt to fit the single romances into larger cycles of trilogies, the first identified a posteriori (“The Romances of the Rose”), the other two significantly incomplete, and limited to the first book (“The Romances of the Lily” and “The Romances of the Pomegranate”). With “The Flame”, having strained the limits of the form to the utmost, the parabola of d’Annunzio novelist closes for ten years: the Italian novel, moreover, would shortly be altered by the emergence of a broad modernist fault line, spearheaded by Luigi Pirandello. Immortality has been an enduring human desire, and certainly one that British novelists in the late century engaged with. H. Rider Haggard was one such novelist, and in his sensational She: A History of Adventure he raises the possibility of transcending human conceptions of time through the titular Ayesha, whose existence represents both an existential threat to the British way of life and a seductive fantasy. Although initially illegible to the explorers who encounter her, through her bodily destruction Ayesha, and the scale of time that she stands for in the text, becomes legible, dissolving the fantasy. Konstantin G. Paustovsky’s novels remain understudied as a research material. Romantics (1923) is his first novel in this genre. The novel reflects the transformation of his ideas about romantic love and connects it with the motif of creativity as an ultimate form of human activity. The article describes the characters-in-love and the effect of love on their personality development. The study relied on the method of comparative analysis as part of historical and literary approach. In his early works, K. G. Paustovsky referred to the romantic tradition, which he transformed to create his own concept of life and creativity based on the principles of humanism and love of life. Maximov, the main character of Romantics, keeps writing a book called Life while being in love with two women against the tragic background of World War I. Maximov’s feelings for the two women gradually resolve his creative crisis. Hatija and Natasha represent two sides of romantic beauty, i.e., angelic and demonic. Love shows Maximov new sides of life and allows him to overcome the internal conflict. When one of the women is lost to him in the chaos of war, both female images merge into a single harmonious Eternal Femininity, which is a remake of the romantic tradition. By facing various dangers, Maximov learns the essence of life: love brings about its triumph over death.

Women at the crossroads of worlds: gender dynamics and strategies in Jasmina Musabegovic's novels The paper examines various aspects of women's lives “at the crossroads of worlds” exploring the complex dimensions of their experiences, identities, and role in different social, cultural, and geopolitical contexts. Analysis of gender implications often involves a combination of different theoretical approaches to gain a more complete understanding of how society shapes and reflects gender roles and identities. In the novels by Jasmina Musabegović Skretnice (1986), Most (1994), and Žene. Glasovi. (2005) From the disposition of contemporary feminist epistemology, we (re)interpret the position of a woman who is in a relationship (with someone), and not exclusively in the socially constructed role of an object. By reflecting, on the analyzed novels, women's experiences, gender dynamics, and gender-specific issues through the prism of different feminist perspectives and feminist theoretical practices, we realized that women in traditional societies also developed different strategies that enabled survival, adaptation, and partial coping with the limitations of patriarchal structures. These strategies varied depending on the culture, period, and social context.

So Hot Was the Cannon by Vladimir Kecmanović received a lot of attention immediately after publication. Since it thematizes the siege of Sarajevo, along with the main character, a boy – a mute witness and narrator, upon a superficial reading of the text, it may appear as a novel that opens up space for confronting the past. A closer reading, along with unraveling the narrative strategies, reveals a revisionist picture of the siege of Sarajevo from 1992-1996. Thus, the characters are flat, without contradictions, often reduced to a collective identity. The plot, although some of the critics claimed the opposite, is sharply polarized among different collective ethnically distributed actants in the novel, and the whole story in general functions as a specific structural chiasm regarding aggressor – victim relation. The development of the plot is entirely subordinated to the creation of this effect, just like the distribution of dialogue, i.e. the speech of the characters. This paper aims to investigate some of the narrative strategies that contribute to this effect while highlighting the ideologically motivated stereotypes that form the basis of the narrative and the production of inverse images of the siege of Sarajevo.

This paper will problematize a teaching methodological approach to the novel Skretnice, in which the students’ communication competencies are put in the foreground. This paper tries to show how interpretation still occupies a special position in the modern teaching methodology of teaching literature by connecting the modern teaching methodological models and students’ needs. In the process of the teaching methodological processing of the novel Skretnice by Jasmina Musabegović, we try to combine the elements of various methodical approaches: interpretation, a problematic, open teaching methodological approach. The goal is to elaborate a reading strategy and development of language skills/competencies: reading, speaking, listening and writing. The novel will be set as a literary template in the function of developing fundamental students’ competencies, in which a teaching methodological interpretation of the novel will be further developed. We will direct the students’ activities towards independent reading, research and writing about the topics and problems raised by the novel and its openness for cross-subject correlations.

This article aims to question the pact of mutuality, which has existed since the beginning of the 20th century between the novel and the cinema. More precisely, it will refer to the comparative approach, which highlights the dialogue among the arts, the analysis of the literary text and its reception by the world of cinema. This is why we chose Les Misérables, a classic text, which has seen many adaptations in French and other languages. We will then study the transition from the textual medium to the multimedia medium by focusing on the famous scene of Cosette in the nocturnal woods as the director Josée Dayan adapted it in 2000.

In a society undergoing profound transformation after the establishment of colonial rule, a new literature emerged in Vietnam, with new literary genres including the novel. Strongly influenced by French literature, this literature demonstrates the ability of contemporary Vietnamese writers to delve deeply in their ideas, exploring their feelings in a freer and more expansive literary genre. The evolution of the novel in quốc ngữ was inseparable from the activities of the Tự Lực [Autonomous] Literary Group, one of the most important literary circles of the 1930s. This group brought together a large number of writers of the new generation, and set itself the goal of discarding the vestiges of traditionalist society and promoting, a contrario, the new values of individualism. In this article, we propose to observe the place of the Tự Lực group, as it moved from the romantic current to realist inspiration, in the evolution of the Vietnamese novel during the first half of the twentieth century.

The French literature from the late 19th and early 20th centuries that can be classified as “space fiction” centered on missions to Mars and making contact with Martians. The topic’s appeal stems from scientific findings of the time (particularly the so-called Martian canals) as well as the traditional symbolism of the Roman god who gave the Red Planet its name. All authors who wrote about Mars during the “Belle Époque” were inspired, to varying degrees, by the writings of the eminent astronomer Camille Flammarion (both scientific and fictional). The article delves into the specifics of how Joseph Rosnyaîné, André Laurie, Georges Le Faure, Henry de Graffigny, Arnould Galopin, Gustave Le Rouge, and Jean de La Hire interpret the Martian theme in their works. It is demonstrated that the use of traditional materials for popular novels is mixed with a desire to update popular literature’s narrative strategies. Thus, The Extraordinary Adventures of a Russian Scientist Across the Solar System by Le Faure and Graffigny, written between 1888-1896, contrasts the “intergalactic” theme, which was novel in French literature, with its archaic interpretation. The tendency to mix genres, to combine the “merveilleux-scientifique” (scientific marvelous) with Gothic and vampire literature approaches, as well as to augment the story with the occult component, increases. The so-called “martian duology” by G. Le Rouge, which lays the foundation for the poetics of horror – so vital to the 20th-century popular reading – is among the most significant literary works. The modernist bent is particularly evident in J. de La Hire’s 1911 book The Mystery of the Fifteen, which foresaw the rise of the superman hero, a new type of hero for the popular novel (however, this hero did not gain popularity in France).

Spondyloocular syndrome (SOS) is a rare autosomal recessive skeletal and ocular disorder with variable phenotypes. It is caused by pathogenic mutation in the XYLT2 gene, which encodes the enzyme xylo-transferase, necessary for the synthesis of proteoglycan. It is characterized by generalized osteoporosis, short stature, hearing impairment, eye abnormalities, and cardiac defects. Till date only 24 cases have been reported worldwide with no cases documented from India. We subjected the patient to relevant biochemical investigations and Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) scan along with Next Generation Clinical Exome Sequencing (NGCES). We report a case of 23-year-old male who presented with recurrent long bone fractures, congenital heart defects, eye abnormalities (bilateral corneal opacities and atrophic bulbi), and short stature. In addition, our patient also had genu valgum and right-sided hydrocele which have never been reported in SOS till date. On genetic analysis, NGCES revealed a novel pathogenic frameshift variant c.191_192 delCA, p.(Thr64fs*22) in the XYLT2 gene. The patient is doing well on six monthly zoledronic acid infusions. The goal of the article is to consider the specifics of the genre semantics of the modern novel in the context of the psychopoetics development. Alongside this, the objective of the work is to revisit the novels through the characteristics of their varieties and to try to answer the question – why the novels under consideration can be specified as psychological. A significant element of the article is devoted to the study of the representation techniques in modern Ukrainian novels in the context of psychopoetics. This research resulted in defining the genre semantics of the novels by the modern Ukrainian authors, ways of their implementation in the light of psychopoetics, psychonarratives, psychological types and means of psycho-poetic representation. The practical significance of the research is determined by the contribution to the development of psychopoetics as a branch of modern literary studies. The research outcomes can be used to design elective philological courses, comparative studies, and also for the advanced research on historical-cultural and psychological aspects of the essence of creativity in general.
