To thrive along the Mackenzie and Yukon rivers in the nineteenth century required expertise rooted in generations of living on the land, along with some good fortune. Arriving in greater numbers after mid-century, many fur traders and missionaries lacked the skills to sustain themselves and keep their hunger at bay. These failures, combined with a colonial focus on agriculture and its limits in the North, served to create a nineteenth-century culture of food insecurity. Where northern Indigenous stories about hunger reassured, protected, educated, and enriched, colonial stories about hunger often stoked fear and anxiety; they described northern places as impoverished and unreliable. This essay explores this early culture of food insecurity through stories told by Oblate missionaries about their failed hunts, conflicts between traders and missionaries over securing land for gardens, accounts of starvation, "fasting," and their interpretation, and the experience of one exceptionally hard winter (1888–89) which reinforced southern perceptions of the North as an intrinsically harsh environment and food-insecure place. The essay closes with an examination of the impacts of the whaling industry on caribou hunting among the Gwich'in and Inuvialuit to demonstrate how colonial extraction created new forms of food scarcity, foreshadowing the environmental impacts of twentieth-century resource exploitation. Though the Ernst angle concept presented in the original paper introducing Fourier NMR spectroscopy was developed for sensitivity optimization in a time-averaged single-pulse experiment it is shown here that its conclusions may be generalized to complex multidimensional experiments. The salient message is to explore (re-)design of NMR pulse sequences to return some of the magnetization to the z axis at the end, so that they can be performed without a relaxation delay. In favorable cases, such pulse sequences can be concatenated in a synergistic way to further enhance sensitivity.

Målet med denne artikkelen er å utforske om det finnes et regionalt særuttrykk i unges klimaengasjement. Utgangspunktet er studien «A world worth living in» hvor vi undersøker hva det vil si å leve et godt liv i Arktis. Vi spør hvordan ungdom i nord forstår hva det vil si å leve bærekraftig, og om denne forståelsen innebærer en form for opposisjon. Datamaterialet er fire dialogkaféer om temaet ungdomsliv i nord, gjennomført på et studiested i Nord-Norge. Rammeverket for analysen er teorier om sted og begrepene talehandlinger og tidsrebeller. Analyser av gruppesamtalene viser at deltakerne opponerer mot et rådende perspektiv på bærekraft som de oppfatter at favoriserer folk i urbane strøk, skaper sosiale ulikheter, fungerer ekskluderende og er elitistiske. Med metaforen det blå skiftet beskriver vi hvordan fortellingene om det perifere, kalde, rene og mørke nord kan supplere debatten om hvordan leve bærekraftige liv. I denne metaforen inngår ideen om periferi som det ekte, aktive og rettferdige. Analysen viser betydningen av at bærekraftige liv må være tilgjengelig for alle, uansett bosted og tilgang på ressurser.

Norse myths are the subject of numerous remakes and rewriting within the cultural industries contemporary productions. This article looks at various aspects of the reception of these traditional stories today. After outlining the questions posed by the medieval sources at our disposal, this text shows that contemporary representations are generally not direct references to the Middle Ages, but to several intermediate receptions. Secondly, Norse myths are often associated with stories from other cultures, thus taking part in processes of cultural hybridization. Studying them shows that our cultures are products of many combinations and borrowings, far from the purity that some seek to attribute to them. Finally, myths can be used to explore contemporary social issues, particularly political ones, such as ecology, war, feminism and positions of domination in the writing of history. Therefore, although they are traces of the past, Norse myths are firmly rooted in today's societies and can be used to evoke the many issues at stake. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Résumé: Dans son action normative, l'OIT a d'abord promu un modèle occidental, organisé autour de la relation de travail typique. Quand la voix du Sud et celle des femmes ont commencé à se faire entendre au sein de l'Organisation, un autre discours, axé sur l'égalité, a émergé, se superposant au précédent. Les auteurs font appel aux théories de l'institutionnalisme historique et de la structuration pour décrire cette évolution et le conflit normatif qui en a résulté, tout en observant la composition des effectifs de l'OIT et des délégations assistant aux sessions de la Conférence internationale du Travail. A travers la représentation de ce sport, plusieurs questions sont abordées : l’immigration, le racisme, la pauvreté, les écarts Nord/Sud, la binarité dichotomique identité/altérité, etc. Tout au long du récit le football agit comme une passerelle culturelle permettant de tisser les liens rompus par l’exil, entre l’ici et l’ailleurs, dans une vision dénonciatrice des inégalités humaines et des idéologies monolithiques qui divisent le monde en Moi/Autre, œuvrant pour le dialogue et la rencontre.

The Drosophila BMP 2/4 homologue Decapentaplegic (Dpp) acts as a morphogen to regulate diverse developmental processes, including wing morphogenesis. Transcriptional feedback regulation of this pathway ensures tightly controlled signaling outputs to generate the precise pattern of the adult wing. Nevertheless, few direct Dpp target genes have been explored and our understanding of feedback regulation remains incomplete. Here we employ transcriptional profiling following dpp conditional knockout to identify nord , a novel Dpp/BMP feedback regulator. nord mutants generated by CRISPR/Cas9 mutagenesis produce a smaller wing and display low penetrance venation defects. At the molecular level, nord encodes a secreted heparin-binding protein, and we show that its overexpression is sufficient to antagonize Dpp/BMP signaling. Mechanistically, we demonstrate that Nord physically interacts with the Dpp/BMP co-receptor Dally and promotes its degradation. In sum, we propose that Nord fine-tunes Dpp/BMP signaling by regulating Dally availability on the cell surface, with implications for both developmental and disease models. The Toronto Raptors' 2019 National Basketball Association (NBA) championship win, a first for the franchise and for a Canadian team, "turned hockey country into basketball nation" (CBC Radio 2020). Canadians' burgeoning embrace of the team and the sport seemed to point to a growing celebration of Blackness within the nation. However, we problematize the 2019 championship win to tell a more expansive story about how sport and national myths conceal truths about race and belonging in Canada. We explore two particular cases—the "We The North" campaign and the media coverage of Raptors superfan Nav Bhatia—to highlight the contradictory ways that the Raptors coverage mobilized symbols of the North and multiculturalism to present the team as quintessentially Canadian and rebrand basketball for Canadian audiences. We further explore how these stark contradictions manifest in the racialized policing of basketball courts in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). These cases demonstrate that the celebrations of the Raptors and basketball not only continued to police racialized bodies but also ensured that their inclusion was contingent on the maintenance of the status quo. In this study, we analyse Yasmina Khadra’s novel which deals with the extrovert side of many cultures towards the others. This novel explains, through the different illustrated images, the problem of writing about the others and the intercultural dialogue between East and West, South and North. The novel concept of NORD (NO relaxation delay) NMR spectroscopy is introduced. The idea is to design concatenated experiments in a way that the magnetization used in the first relaxes toward equilibrium during the second and vice versa, thus saving instrument time. Applications include complete well‐resolved 1H‐1H and 1H‐13C one‐bond and long‐range correlation maps of an 80 mM solution of a trisaccharide recorded in less than two minutes and hydrocortisone with extensive spectral overlap. Artikkelen undersøker relasjonen mellom menneske og natur i Knut Hamsuns Markens grøde (1917) og Stina Aronsons Hitom himlen (1946). Et komparativt perspektiv inspirert av postkolonial økokritikk viser at begge tekstene forholder seg aktivt til et sett av ideologisk ladede forestillinger knyttet til den nordlige ødemarken som motivfelt. Ved å sammenligne fremstillinger av bønder, landskap, dyr, samer og overnaturlige krefter, blir det tydelig at forfatternes måte å forholde seg til dette motivfeltet på, er preget av ganske ulike syn på menneske og natur. Artikkelen tar for seg noen pregnante tekststeder der slike ideologiske posisjoner blir særlig tydelige. Dermed kan artikkelen også leses inn i en pågående diskusjon av Hamsuns omstridte nobelprisroman som en økologisk tekst. Det komparative, situerende og ideologikritiske perspektivet bidrar til å nyansere tidligere økokritiske lesninger, særlig knyttet til samenes status i teksten.

Le Québec, l’ensemble du Canada, voire l’Alaska ou la Russie, contiennent de vastes espaces nordiques inhabités. Cette affirmation, qui tombe sous le sens pour la majorité des Québécois et de leurs voisins anglophones, est pourtant lourde d’a priori discutables issus de la culture occidentale. En réalité, ces territoires sont soit occupés, parcourus ou nommés par les autochtones, depuis des siècles. Ces formes d’appropriation relativement légères, du moins en termes d’empreinte écologique, remettent en question le concept d’écoumène, notamment à cause de sa dimension binaire. Dans ce contexte, cette article vise à discuter des fondements du concept d’écoumène et, par ricochet, de nature sauvage (wilderness). Il apparaît évident que le terme écoumène est utilisé de manière réductrice et qu’il faille l’adapter pour décrire les divers modes possibles d’habiter le monde, notamment en milieu nordique. Au final, nous prônons la nécessaire reconnaissance des territoires de très faible densité, comme les espaces nordiques, afin d’entretenir des relations harmonieuses avec les autochtones.

La présente contribution se concentre sur les codifications culturelles du Nord au XVIe siècle. Elle examine dans quelle mesure l’Historia de gentibus septentrionalibus (1539) d’Olaus Magnus et ses traductions – qui, au XVIe siècle, circulent dans toute l’Europe – sont fondées sur les conceptions d’une esthétique spécifiquement nordique : en quoi les phénomènes esthétiques, la relation à l’art des habitants du Nord, voire le Nord même en tant que lieu esthétique interviennent-ils dans la caractérisation de l’Europe du Nord ? Une étude comparative montre que, dans le discours sur l’art, les accents sont placés différemment dans les diverses éditions. Les descriptions d’un “art du froid” chez Olaus Magnus ont enrichi l’imaginaire littéraire. Torquato Tasso s’est servi de cette dimension esthétique de l’Historia de gentibus septentrionalibus pour sa tragédie Il Re Torrismondo et sa conception poétologique. Diffusée par le biais de Michel de Montaigne et de la pièce de Torquato Tasso, l’œuvre d’Olaus Magnus a contribué à intégrer le Nord à l’Europe.
