We aim to investigate the prevalence of over-the-counter (OTC) or non-prescription and prescription medication use during pregnancy in women from the city of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the level of prior knowledge, and the sources of their information about medication hazard/safety.Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed using a self-administered questionnaire for 287 pregnant women visiting King Saud Medical City (KSMC) – outpatient departments for routine antenatal care during 3 months (1st Mar– 31st May 2021). The questionnaire was developed by Navaro et al with 4 sections: socio-demographic data, medication use during pregnancy, level of knowledge, and relevant sources of information.Results: The participants had a mean age of 32.21 years ± 6.41 (SD), and gestational age of 23.67 weeks ± 8.47. About 76.66% of them reported using medication during their current pregnancy: predominantly prescribed (86.36%). Women who used medication during pregnancy were slightly older; the mean difference was 1.97 years (95% CI 0.23– 3.71) (P=0.027). Women living in an urban environment as compared with rural had a higher prevalence of medication use (79.01% vs 52%) (P=0.002). Overall, 58.19% reported using non-prescribed medications during pregnancy, with analgesics as the most frequently used class (70.30%). The mild nature of the illnesses and availability of an old prescription and information from pharmacists were the main reasons for self-medication. About 40.77% denied receiving any information about medication use during pregnancy.Conclusion: The prevalence of the medication use during pregnancy in our population is alarmingly high. Analgesics were the most frequently used. Objective: The objective of this study was to compare student learning outcomes, behaviors, and attitudes in a non-prescription drug and self-care therapeutics course taught in the second professional (P2) year vs the first professional (P1) year at one pharmacy school. Methods: Mean performance of students by class year on case consultations and exam scores was compared. Focus groups with student volunteers and course teaching assistants (TAs) and one-on-one interviews with a subset of instructors were conducted by an outside educational evaluation specialist to capture perceptions of student learning behaviors and attitudes. Results: There was no difference in performance on graded case consultations (mean difference = 0.16, P =.74, 95% CI [−0.77 to 1.09]), mid-term examinations (mean difference = 0.53, P =.62, 95% CI [−1.59 to 2.65]), or final examinations (mean difference = 0.73, P =.57, 95% CI [−1.83 to 3.30]) between P1 and P2 students. P1 students reported being more consistent in completing pre-class readings and in feeling less distracted by other courses than did P2 students. Students, TAs, and instructors consistently spoke about advantages of the course in the P1 year (e.g., less stress and greater eagerness to learn and apply skills at work) and disadvantages in the P2 year (e.g., distraction from concurrent P2 integrated pharmacotherapeutics course and tension between real-world experience and constraints of grading rubric). Conclusion: P1 students, despite one year earlier in their curriculum, performed equally well as P2 students. All stakeholders agree that the advantages of teaching a self-care course on students' learning behaviors and attitudes in the P1 year outweigh disadvantages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Despite the common use of acetaminophen and its safety profile, cases of acetaminophen-induced hepatic toxicities have been reported due to unintentional duplication that mostly results from the public significant lack of knowledge. This research aims to assess the public awareness towards the safe use of acetaminophen in Saudi Arabia. Methods: A cross-sectional study that targeted the adults in Saudi Arabia that was carried out using self-administered questionnaire. The data obtained included sociodemographic characteristics, the pattern of use, the attitude, as well as the knowledge of the general public towards acetaminophen. Results: Data presented in this study showed that a significant majority of the respondents (84.11%) used acetaminophen without their physician's prescription as needed, (66%) denied the development of side effects after using acetaminophen. In terms of the participants' knowledge and awareness towards the usage of acetaminophen and its safety, a pronounced proportion of the respondents (53.65%) incorrectly identified the maximum daily dose of acetaminophen and only (16.2%) could. A significant minority of the participants (27%) admitted relying on their own knowledge as the primary source of information. Among the participants (54.69%) denied receiving education on acetaminophen from health care professionals. A marked distinction was observed between the respondents with higher educational level as well as younger individuals regarding the identification of the maximum daily dose (p = 0.0034) and (p = 0.039), respectively. Background: This study investigated the efficacy of ChatGPT-3.5 and ChatGPT-4 in assessing drug safety for patients with kidney diseases, comparing their performance to Micromedex, a well-established drug information source. Despite the perception of non-prescription medications and supplements as safe, risks exist, especially for those with kidney issues. The study's goal was to evaluate ChatGPT's versions for their potential in clinical decision-making regarding kidney disease patients., Method: The research involved analyzing 124 common non-prescription medications and supplements using ChatGPT-3.5 and ChatGPT-4 with queries about their safety for people with kidney disease. The AI responses were categorized as "generally safe," "potentially harmful," or "unknown toxicity." Simultaneously, these medications and supplements were assessed in Micromedex using similar categories, allowing for a comparison of the concordance between the two resources., Results: Micromedex identified 85 (68.5%) medications as generally safe, 35 (28.2%) as potentially harmful, and 4 (3.2%) of unknown toxicity. ChatGPT-3.5 identified 89 (71.8%) as generally safe, 11 (8.9%) as potentially harmful, and 24 (19.3%) of unknown toxicity. GPT-4 identified 82 (66.1%) as generally safe, 29 (23.4%) as potentially harmful, and 13 (10.5%) of unknown toxicity. The overall agreement between Micromedex and ChatGPT-3.5 was 64.5% and ChatGPT-4 demonstrated a higher agreement at 81.4%. Notably, ChatGPT-3.5's suboptimal performance was primarily influenced by a lower concordance rate among supplements, standing at 60.3%. This discrepancy could be attributed to the limited data on supplements within ChatGPT-3.5, with supplements constituting 80% of medications identified as unknown., Conclusion: ChatGPT's capabilities in evaluating the safety of non-prescription drugs and supplements for kidney disease patients are modest compared to established drug information resources. Neither ChatGPT-3.5 nor ChatGPT-4 can be currently recommended as reliable drug information sources for this demographic. The study aimed to examine differences in medication use among midlife women from different cultural origins and to identify socio-demographic, health, and lifestyle characteristics associated with prescribed and non-prescribed medication use. Faceto- face interviews with women aged 45-64 years were conducted during 2004-2006 within three population groups: long-term Jewish residents (LTJR), immigrants from the former Soviet Union after 1989, and Arab women. The survey instrument included current use of medications and way of purchasing (with/without prescription). The level of prescribed and non-prescribed medication use was categorized as taking none, taking 1-2, and taking 3 or more medications. The rates of medication use were 59.5% for prescribed medication and 47% for non-prescribed medications. Differences between the minority groups and LTJR were observed mainly for cardiovascular, vitamins, supplements, and hormonal medications. The analyses showed significantly lower use of prescribed medications among immigrants and of nonprescribed medications among Arab women after taking into account health and socioeconomic indicators. Increased use of prescribed and non-prescribed medications was associated with worse health status and older age. Education was associated with increased use of non-prescribed medications. The disparities in pharmaceutical care may be linked to barriers in access to health care and to cultural preferences among minorities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Patients commonly ask pharmacists for the over-the-counter medications when they get different ailments. Assessment of how a pharmacist evaluates a patient's signs and symptoms and his or her approach to treating the patient using over-the-counter medications were the main goals of this study. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, the scenarios on cough, diarrhea and Obesity were selected from questionnaires that had been responded by 61 pharmacists. The scenarios were then designed by determining important questions including the key question using appropriate references and the opinions of a panel of experts. Subsequently, a list of all pharmacies in Isfahan (Iran) was obtained and 210 pharmacies were randomly selected. Final analysis was made on 151 visits to 127 community pharmacies. Performance of pharmacists, i.e. the number and type of questions used to come up with a recommendation and the appropriateness of the decision, was assessed both strictly and leniently. Moreover, the length of time spent for counseling and influence of gender and ownership of pharmacists were analyzed. Findings: The mean counseling time was 130.2 ± 86.1 and 98.6 ± 72.4 seconds for female and male pharmacists, respectively (P = 0.01). The key questions for cough, diarrhea, and Obesity scenarios were asked by 29 (55%), 45 (87%), and 0 (0%) of pharmacists, respectively. The questions led to 25 (47%), 10 (19%), and 8 (17%) appropriate recommendations according to a lenient evaluation. Conclusion: Despite asking the key questions, the majority of pharmacists do not make appropriate recommendations for cough, diarrhea, and especially Obesity. Incorporating relevant courses in the pharmacy curricula and devoting continuing education seminars to over-the-counter medication usage are suggested to improve pharmacists' performance.
