Multiwave interference plays a crucial role in shaping the spatial variations of internal tides. Based on a combination of in situ mooring and altimeter data, interference of semidiurnal internal tides was investigated in the northern South China Sea. Mooring observations indicate the observed kinetic-to-potential energy ratio and group speed are both relatively lower than the theoretical values of mode-1 semidiurnal internal tides, indicating the presence of partly-standing waves. This is consistent with the altimeter result that the mooring was located at the antinode within the interference pattern formed by the superposition of the westward and southward semidiurnal internal tides from the Luzon Strait and the continental slope of the southern Taiwan Strait. However, the kinetic-to-potential energy ratio and group velocity were notably changed when an anticyclonic eddy passed by the mooring. By employing the ray-tracing method, we identified that mesoscale processes may induce a phase difference in the semidiurnal internal tides between the Luzon Strait and the continental slope of the southern Taiwan Strait. In 1905, Ruben's Tube was invented by German physicists Heinrich Ruben and Otto Krigar-Menzel. The tube is closed at one end and the other end is attached with a loudspeaker, then filled with flammable gas. With the help of the Ruben's Tube, the standing waves were represented physically by fire. There are no specific standards in which Ruben's Tube is constructed. At certain resonance frequency, the flame produced visual standing wave that varies in height. It has been used in the teaching of acoustical resonance behavior. This article provides review on Ruben's Tube and its operation, as well as some commentaries and drawbacks for each subtopic. The dialectical symmetry of opposite properties is the fundamental law of the universe. The wave potential-kinetic structure of all fields of matter-space-time is the manifestation of such a symmetry, which is described by the three-dimensional wave equation. One of the particular solutions of the wave equation leads to sinusoidal spherical standing waves. Their nodal structure recalls the ordered elementary atomic structures. The quasi-periodical shell-nodal feature of standing waves reflects the periodic regularity inherent in atomic spaces. On this basis Mendeleev's periodic law gives and makes precise the new theoretical justification.
