Conservational tillage (NT) is widely recognized globally for its efficacy in mitigating soil loss due to wind and water erosion. However, a systematic large-scale estimate of NT's impact on soil loss reduction in Northeast, China's primary granary, remains absent. This study aimed to investigate the spatial and temporal variability of soil erosion under NT compared to conventional tillage (CT) in the black soil region and to analyze the underlying mechanisms driving these erosions. The Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) and the Revised Wind Erosion Equation (RWEQ) models were employed, incorporating previously published plot/watershed data to estimate the potential reduction of water and wind erosion by NT in this region. Results indicated that under CT practices, water- and wind-induced soil losses were widely distributed in the arable land of Northeast China, with intensities of 2603 t km−2 a−1 and 34 t km−2 a−1, respectively. Furthermore, the erosive processes of water and wind erosion were significantly reduced by 56.4% and 91.8%, respectively, under NT practices compared to CT. The highest efficiency in soil conservation using NT was observed in the mountainous regions such as the Changbai Mountains and Greater Khingan Mountains, where water erosion was primarily driven by cropland slopes and wind erosion was driven by the wind speed. Conversely, the largest areas of severe erosion were observed in the Songnen Plain, primarily due to the significant proportion of arable land in this region. In the plain regions, water-induced soil loss was primarily influenced by precipitation, with light and higher levels of erosion occurring more frequently on long gentle slopes (0–3°) than on higher slope areas (3–5°). In the temporal dimension, soil loss induced by water and wind erosion ceased during the winter under both tillage systems due to snow cover and water freezing in the soil combined with the extremely cold climate. Substantial reductions were observed under NT from spring to autumn compared to CT. Ultimately, the temporal and spatial variations of soil loss under CT and NT practices were established from 2010 to 2018 and then projected onto a cropland map of Northeast China. Based on this analysis, NT is recommended as most suitable practice in the southern regions of Northeast China for maintaining soil health and crop yield production, while its suitability decreases in the northern and eastern regions. Interest in improving the long-term sustainability of agricultural production systems has focused on identifying management practices that promote soil health. No tillage, cover cropping, and amending soils with broiler (Gallus gallus domesticus L.) litter are commonly adopted conservation practices that have been shown to improve soil fertility and crop yield. However, the overall influence of these conservation practices on soil health in the southeastern US are not well understood. Thus, a study was conducted to evaluate the influence of tillage, broiler litter (BL) applications, and cropping systems on soil biochemical properties. Soils were collected from field research plots under long-term management (>than 25 years of tillage, 15 years of broiler litter application, and 15 years of cropping system). Soil microbial biomass, C, N, and P, amidohydrolases, and dissolved organic matter (DOM) were evaluated as indicators of soil health. Adopting tillage and BL into the agricultural management system modified the biochemical parameters of the soils evaluated. Most of these modifications occurred in the 0–5 cm depth. Higher microbial biomass carbon (MBC; 85%) and nitrogen (MBN; 10%) and enzyme activities of asparaginase (65%) and glutaminase (70%) were observed in the 0–5 cm depth under no tillage (NT) compared to conventional tillage (CT), indicating greater biological activities were established in these soil ecosystems. Broiler litter applications increased microbial biomass N and activities of asparaginase and glutaminase in both soil depths. In addition, microbial biomass phosphorus (MBP) was increased following BL application in the 0–5 cm depth. According to climate change projections, global temperatures would increase by 2°C by 2070, and agriculture is expected to be among the most affected sectors, particularly intensive field crops like cereals. Therefore, researchers need to investigate the most cost‐effective agricultural strategies that can prevent production losses and ensure global food security. This study aimed to identify the limiting factors of durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. subsp. Durum (Desf.) Husn.) yield production under Mediterranean conditions. Durum wheat yield data of over 5 years (2017–2022), from a 30‐year rainfed long‐term experiment conducted in the 'Pasquale Rosati' experimental farm of the Polytechnic University of Marche in Agugliano, Italy (43°32' N, 13°22′ E, 100 a.s.l.) on Calcaric Gleyic Cambisols with a silt‐clay texture, were analysed and compared with the recorded thermo‐pluviometric trend. The field trial included two soil managements (no tillage vs. conventional tillage) and three Nitrogen (N) fertilization levels (0, 90, and 180 kg N ha−1). The most important driver for durum wheat production was N fertilization. However, in the absence of N fertilization, no tillage showed a higher yield (+1.2 t ha−1) than conventional tillage due to the accumulation of organic matter in the soil. When wheat was fertilized with 90 kg N ha−1, no tillage resulted in 25% yield more than conventional tillage (+1.2 t ha−1), but this occurred only when the increase in temperatures was constant from January until harvest (this happened in 3 of 5 years of monitoring). The non‐constant increase in temperature from January to wheat harvest may hamper crop phenological development and reduce the potential yield. The highest fertilization rate (180 Kg N ha−1) resulted in the highest wheat yields regardless of soil management and thermo‐pluviometric trends (5.78 t ha−1). After N fertilization and soil management, the minimum and maximum temperature in February and the maximum temperature in April were crucial for durum wheat production under Mediterranean condition. When there is non‐constant increase in temperature from January to wheat harvest no‐tillage should be preferred over conventional tillage because wheat yields did not reduce under no tillage. Thus, agricultural policies that support the switch from conventional tillage to no‐tillage management should be promoted to enable food security in Mediterranean environments. The factors influencing on seed germination and wheat yield are such as the optimum use of tillage and seeding methods. This study was a randomized complete block experimental design with four treatments and four replications to determine the suitable tillage method for a grain drill with bent leg opener (bent leg grain drill) and also determine the effect of these implements on soil moisture conservation and rainfed wheat yield in dry soil conditions. Treatments were seeding wheat by a bent leg grain drill in four tillage application of direct seeding (no-tillage), bent leg tillage (reduced tillage), bent leg tillage + disc (reduced tillage), and chisel plough + disc (conventional tillage). Results indicated that tillage methods and seeding wheat by the bent leg grain drill affected residue remained on the soil surface, soil bulk density, soil moisture, seedling emergence percent and wheat yield. Reduce tillage by the bent leg tillage implement and seeding by the bent leg grain drill increased residue remained on the soil surface (31%), seedling emergence (26%), soil moisture conservation before harvesting (22.9%), and wheat yield (19.8%) compared to the conventional tillage. The bent leg tillage provides a proper seedbed for seeding wheat with less passes of tractor in dry soil conditions. The results show that the technology of bent leg tillage and bent leg grain drill has the potential to increase soil moisture conservation and wheat yield in rainfed conditions. A drought-resistant plant with high adaptability to various climatic and soil conditions is castor (Ricinus communis L.). There is currently a significant expectation of increased castor oil demand on the global market. When it comes to crop development, there are a variety of factors to take into account for each growing region, especially when it is preferable to fit the castor crop to specific tillage practices and intercropping system. In this veneration, the current study's goal was to determine the effects of various tillage methods and legume crop-based intercropping system in rainfed regions. The field experiments were conducted in 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 at Tapioca and Castor Research Station, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Yethapur. The experimental treatments consisted of conventional tillage and minimum tillage as main plot and castor based inter cropping system @ 1:3 ratio viz., Castor + Greengram, Castor + Cowpea, Castor + Groundnut and Sole Castor as subplot treatments and conducted in split plot design with three replications. The pooled results of a two-year study of different tillage practices in legume crop based intercropping systems in rainfed conditions showed no significant difference among tillage practices relevant to growth, yield attributing characters, seed yield and biomass yield, however higher values were registered under conventional tillage practices over minimum tillage. Higher seed yield of both base (1152 kg ha-1) and inter crop (481 kg ha-1) were documented in conventional tillage practices over minimum tillage. With respect to inter cropping, higher base crop (castor) yield of 1058 kg ha-1 was recorded under castor + groundnut inter cropping system, which was observed to be on par with sole castor (1020 kg ha-1), and castor + greengram (907 kg ha-1). Recorded highest Castor equivalent yield in castor + groundnut (1:3) intercropping, grown under a conventional tillage system. Moreover, the maximum benefit-cost ratio was recorded in castor + groundnut (1:3) intercropping, over sole castor cropping. In conditions where don't have enough water for irrigation, intercropping of forage plants is one of the ways to achieve sustainable agriculture. Biochemical and physical properties of soil tillage system can affect the yield of plants in intercropping. Therefore, with the aim of investigating the forage yield and competitive indices of intercropping, this experiment was performed in the cropping seasons of 2020-2021. Treatments included conventional, minimum, and no tillage system. Intercropping patterns also included monoculture of forage sorghum and maize, alternate row cultivation maize and forage sorghum and alternate cultivation on planting rows. The results showed that the highest plant height (295 cm) and leaf area (6.88) was obtained in intercropping and conventional tillage. The highest forage yield was also observed in sorghum monoculture. However, the land equivalent ratio of mix intercropping with 1.17 showed the superiority of intercropping over monoculture. Evaluation of competitive indicators such as dominance index, relative crowding coefficient, and competitive ratio showed that forage maize is the predominant plant in intercropping conditions. The system productivity index with 8.11 showed that intermediate cultivation on planting rows was superior to other treatments in conventional tillage conditions. The results showed that in conventional tillage and intercropping conditions, acceptable yield was obtained; this advantage can increase water efficiency and use of sorghum in intercropping. Microeukaryotes are vital for maintaining soil quality and ecosystem functioning, however, their communities are less studied than bacterial and fungal ones, especially by high throughput sequencing techniques. Alveolates are important members of soil microbial communities, being consumers and/or prey for other microorganisms. We studied alveolate diversity in soil under the undisturbed steppe (US) and cropped for wheat using two tillage practices (conventional, CT, and no-till, NT) by amplifying the ITS2 marker with ITS3_KYO2/ITS4 primers and sequencing amplicons using Illumina MiSeq. A total of 198 Alveolata OTUs were identified, with 158 OTUs attributed to the Ciliophora phylum, containing five classes: Litostomatea, Spirotrichea and Oligohymenophorea, Nassophorea and Phyllopharyngea. Litostomatea and Phyllopharyngea were more abundant in US as compared with CT and NT. The observed OTU richness was higher in US than in CT and NT. The β-biodiversity of soil ciliates also very distinctly differentiated the US field from CT and NT. In the US, Nassophorea and Spirotrichea correlated positively with sand and negatively with clay, silt and SOM contents. This is the first report about soil ciliates diversity in Siberia as assessed by metabarcoding technique. The revealed clear effect of land use on the relative abundance of some taxa and a lack of tillage effect suggest the importance of the quantity and quality of plant material input for shaping the prey for ciliates. The ITS-metabarcoding technique was used for the first time in the research of ciliates diversity; further studies, embracing diverse aspects of soil ciliates by combining -omics methodology with the traditional one, are needed to get a better insight on the ecological roles of the main ciliate taxa in the complex soil system.

In Argentina, nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) and recently sulfur (S) and zinc (Zn) are recognized nutrients that limit the production of winter cereals. Fertilization decisions are made considering individual nutrient contributions, ignoring the combined contribution of elements. The combined application of nutrients would improve crops response to fertilization compared to the individual contribution of the elements. The objective was to quantify the contributions to the production of oat (Avena sativa L.), barley (Hordeun vulgare L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) grains from either individual application of P, N, S, and Zn, or the combined use as NP and NPSZn. Fertilization experiments were carried out at three sites (Tandil, San Manuel and Lobería) in Argentina. Combined fertilization (NPSZn) resulted in greater yields than the that obtained with the nutrients applied alone in both wheat and barley. The yield advantage of the combined fertilization over the sum of individual fertilization effects was 330 kg ha-1 in wheat and 352 kg ha-1 in barley. In oats, the available data do not allow determining difference between individual or combined fertilization strategies. Under the conditions of this study, combined fertilization promote additional yield responses in both wheat and barley compared to that achieved with individual nutrient application. Maize (Zea mays L.) is one of the main agricultural crops grown worldwide under very diverse climate and soil conditions. For maize cultivation in a conventional tillage system, autumn plowing is a mandatory condition. Minimum soil tillage or no tillage has been applied in recent years, both in research and in production, for reasons relating to soil conservation and fuel economy. This paper presents the results of the research executed under pedoclimatic conditions at the Agricultural Research and Development Station Turda (ARDS Turda, Romania; chernozem soil) regarding the behavior of the maize hybrid Turda 332 cultivated in four tillage systems and two levels of fertilization during the period of 2016–2022. The following soil tillage systems were applied: a conventional tillage system (CT) and unconventional tillage systems in three variants—a minimum tillage system with a chisel (MTC), a minimum tillage system with a disk (MTD), and a no-tillage system (NT). They were applied with two levels of fertilization: basic fertilization (350 kg ha−1 NPK 16:16:16, applied at sowing) and optimized fertilization (350 kg ha−1 NPK 16:16:16 applied at sowing + 150 kg ha−1 calcium ammonium nitrate with additional fertilization in the phenophase of the maize with 6–7 leaves). The results highlight the fact that under the conditions of chernozem soils with a high clay content (41% clay content), maize does not lend itself to cultivation in MTD and NT, requiring deeper mobilization, with the yield data confirming this fact. This is because under the agrotechnical conditions for sowing carried out in MTD and NT, the seeder used (Maschio Gaspardo MT 6R) does not allow for the high-quality sowing of maize, especially under dry soil conditions. Managing soil biodiversity using reduced tillage is a popular approach, yet soil bacteriobiomes in the agroecosystems of Siberia has been scarcely studied, especially as they are related to tillage. We studied bacteriobiomes in Chernozem under natural steppe vegetation and cropped for wheat using conventional or no tillage in a long-term field trial in the Novosibirsk region, Russia, by using the sequence diversity of the V3/V4 region of 16S rRNA genes. Actinobacteria, Acidobacteria, and Proteobacteria summarily accounted for 80% of the total number of sequences, with Actinobacteria alone averaging 51%. The vegetation (natural vs. crop) and tillage (ploughed vs. no-till) affected the bacterial relative abundance at all taxonomic levels and many taxa, e.g., hundreds of OTUs. However, such changes did not translate into α-biodiversity changes, i.e., observed and potential OTUs' richness, Shannon, and Simpson, excepting the slightly higher evenness and equitability in the top 0–5 cm of the undisturbed soil. As for the β-biodiversity, substituting conventional ploughing with no tillage and maintaining the latter for 12 years notably shifted the soil bacteriobiome closer to the one in the undisturbed soil. This study, presenting the first inventory of soil bacteriobiomes under different tillage in the south of West Siberia, underscores the need to investigate the seasonality and longevity aspects of tillage, especially as they are related to crop production. Soil health indicators are a set of measurable and interpretable chemical, physical and biological parameters related to soil functional processes that can be used to assess the state of soil health under different agroecosystems. Multiple indicators are examined in the case of soil health assessment after adoption no-till system such as, total carbon and its fractions, nitrogen, bulk density, aggregate stability and infiltration of water. In this chapter, we use organic carbon (particulate, associated and microbial) and visual structure indicators to assess soil health after a short and long duration of adoption no-till by depth under agro-pedo-climate context in Algeria. A two-year field study was carried out at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute New Delhi, from rabi 2020-21 to 2021-22, with the aim of examining the impacts of tillage and residue management on yield, greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions, global warming potential (GWP) and carbon efficiency ratio (CER) of wheat in a split plot design. The results indicated that both tillage and residue management significantly influenced the grain and biomass yield of wheat. In comparison to conventional tillage (CT), no-tillage (NT) resulted in a substantial reduction of CO2-C emissions by 19.9%, while it led to a notable increase of N2O-N emissions by 11.6%. However, there was a notable and significant rise in GHG emissions with crop residue mulching, registering on an average 20.79% higher emissions compared to residue removal for both the years. The GWP was overall lower in case of NT as compared to CT plots. The highest CER was observed in NTR+ (3.07) during 2020-21 and in NTR0 (3.12) during 2021-22 due to lower CO2 emissions and higher C fixation in both years. Therefore, it may be recommended that wheat can be cultivated in a semi-arid environment with no tillage and residue mulching to provide a comparable yield in addition to lower GHG emissions and GWP and higher CER compared to the farmers’ practice of CT and residue removal.

Tillage management practices have a dynamic impact on soil hydraulic properties and processes. There is a need for information about the effect of tillage practices on soil hydraulic properties for crops growing under sprinkler irrigation in the northern Great Plains. A long-term study was conducted from 2014 to 2018 to examine the effect of no tillage (NT) and conventional tillage (CT) on the saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks) of a sandy loam soil in a two-year corn (Zea mays L.)–soybean (Glycine max L.) rotation. In situ Ks measurements were taken in the center of crop rows within NT and CT plots using a pressure ring infiltrometer at the soil surface (0–15 cm) and a constant head well permeameter at the subsurface (15–30 cm). Results indicated that Ks values were well described by a log-normal distribution at both depths. Results showed that logarithmic Ks (log Ks) was not significantly impacted by tillage. Averaged over the five-year study, the log-transformed Ks of 100 measurements was not significantly affected by tillage in the surface layer under either corn or soybean nor in the subsurface layer under soybean. However, the mean soil log Ks in CT plots (1.784 mm h−1) was significantly greater than that in NT plots (1.186 mm h−1) in the 15–30 cm layer under corn, while Ks was nearly 50% greater in CT than in NT. Large values for the coefficient of variation (CV%) of Ks measurements exhibited significant spatial variations of Ks among plots within each tillage treatment at both the soil surface and subsurface layers under corn and soybean. Thus, more studies under different soils and cropping systems with a larger sample size per treatment are needed to lower spatial variability within treatments and validate the effect of tillage on soil hydraulic properties. Ecological cultivation is a promising regime for medicinal plant production. For a long time, unreasonable farming methods have threatened soil health and medicinal agriculture and restricted the sustainable development of ecological agriculture for medicinal plants. However, there is a lack of comprehensive discourse and discussion about the pros and cons of different tillage regimes. Here, the research trend and application prospects of no-tillage (NT) are comprehensively reviewed, and the ecological benefits, challenges, and opportunities of the NT system in ecological agriculture of medicinal plants are scrutinized, aiming to call for an about-face in the sustainable conservation and utilization of both phytomedicine resources and agricultural/ecological resources. An exhaustive literature search in PubMed, Bing, Scopus, and CNKI was performed to outline the research trend in conservation tillage and medicinal plants during the recent four decades. The application of NT has a long history and can reduce tillage frequency and intensity and protect soil from erosion and deterioration. NT is often combined with organic mulch to significantly reduce soil disturbance. NT and stover mulching have the advantages of saving manpower and resources and improving soil quality, crop yield, and quality. The ecological and economic benefits of NT in long-term medicinal plant cultivation could be prominent. In developing medicinal plant cultivation, competing with food crops should be avoided as much as possible, and the impact on the production of major grain crops should be minimized. Therefore, the full utilization of soil resources in forests, mountains, and wasteland is advocated, and sustainable soil utilization is the core issue in the process of land reclamation. NT and stover mulching not only inherit the traditional concept of "natural farming", conform to the basic laws of ecology, as well as the growth characteristics of medicinal plants, but also protect the ecological environment of the production area. It would become the core strategy of ecological agriculture for medicinal plants. Our summary and discussions would help propose countermeasures to popularize NT and organic mulch, promote relevant research and scientific allocation of resources, and adapt to local conditions to achieve precise management and harmonize conservation and production of medicinal plants. To better understand the effects of tillage practice and fertilization management on greenhouse gas emissions and yields, a four-year field experiment was conducted to assess the effects of tillage practices (rotary tillage (RT) and no tillage (NT)) on the emissions of methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) and rice yield under four fertilization management strategies (no fertilizer without straw (CK), inorganic fertilizer without straw (F), inorganic fertilize with biochar (FB), and inorganic fertilizer with straw (FS)). The results showed that NT significantly reduced CH4 emissions by 21.1% and 52.6% compared to RT in early and late rice, respectively. Conversely, NT led to a significant increase in N2O emissions by 101.0%, 79.0%, and 220.8% during the early rice, late rice, and fallow periods. Nevertheless, global warming potential (GWP) and greenhouse gas intensity (GHGI) were significantly mitigated, respectively, by 36.4% and 35.9% in NT, compared to RT treatment. There were significant interactions between tillage practice and fertilization management. Compared with CK, the F and FB treatments significantly reduced the GWP, respectively, by 40.4% and 53.8%, as well as the GHGI, respectively, by 58.2% and 69.9% in the RT condition; however, no significant difference was found under the NT condition. In contrast, the FS treatment significantly increased GWP and GHGI in both the RT and NT conditions. Overall, FB treatment had the same significantly low GHGI rating, with a value of 0.44 kg CO2-eq kg−1 yield year−1 in RT and NT. Thus, the conversion of straw to biochar and its application to rice fields is a potentially sustainable agricultural strategy for mitigating GHG emissions and increasing yields. Recent advancements in agricultural metagenomics allow for characterizing microbial indicators of soil health brought on by changes in management decisions, which ultimately affect the soil environment. Field-scale studies investigating the microbial taxa from agricultural experiments are sparse, with none investigating the long-term effect of crop rotation and tillage on microbial indicator species. Therefore, our goal was to determine the effect of rotations (continuous corn, CCC; continuous soybean, SSS; and each phase of a corn-soybean rotation, Cs and Sc) and tillage (no-till, NT; and chisel tillage, T) on the soil microbial community composition following 20 years of management. We found that crop rotation and tillage influence the soil environment by altering key soil properties, such as pH and soil organic matter (SOM). Monoculture corn lowered pH compared to SSS (5.9 vs. 6.9, respectively) but increased SOM (5.4% vs. 4.6%, respectively). Bacterial indicator microbes were categorized into two groups: SOM dependent and acidophile vs. N adverse and neutrophile. Fungi preferred the CCC rotation, characterized by low pH. Archaeal indicators were mainly ammonia oxidizers with species occupying niches at contrasting pHs. Numerous indicator microbes are involved with N cycling due to the fertilizer-rich environment, prone to aquatic or gaseous losses.

IntroductionConservation agriculture (CA), as a sustainable cultivation system, aims at efficient use of natural resources with least environmental impacts, while achieving food security through increasing yield and crop diversification. CA consists of three main principles: 1- reduction or elimination of mechanical soil disturbance; 2- maintaining a permanent cover of crop residues on soil; and 3- diversification of crops. However, the total area under CA in Iran is less than 5% of arable lands. In Hamedan province, CA is mostly implemented in rainfed farming. Therefore, there is a necessity to expand CA in irrigated areas. Nonetheless, a lack of sufficient technical and local knowledge about CA acts as a barrier for its expansion in irrigated lands. Despite the large body of research conducted on CA, there is no detailed information about the combined effects of cover crops and conservation tillage systems on soil functioning and corn productivity in semi-arid regions of Hamedan province. Therefore, our aim was to study three-year effects of conservation tillage practices (no tillage and minimum tillage) and cover crops (hairy vetch and grass pea) on ​​selected soil quality indicators and yield components of corn in a clay loam soil of a semi-arid region in Hamedan. Materials and Methods Combined effects of various tillage practices and cover crops on selected soil quality indicators and corn productivity were examined in a three-year experiment conducted in the research field of Bu-Ali Sina University. A factorial experiment in the basis of randomized complete block design with 3 replications and 2 factors were carried out, in which three levels of tillage practices (no tillage (NT), minimum tillage (MT), and conventional tillage (CT)), and three levels of cover crops (hairy vetch (V), grass pea (L), and no cover crop) were the treatments. Surface soil samples (0-15 cm) were collected two weeks after corn harvesting in the third year of experiment. Total organic carbon (TOC), organic carbon stock (CS), active carbon (AC), carbon management index (CMI), basal respiration (BR), alkaline phosphatase activity (APA), bulk density (BD), mean weight diameter of water-stable aggregates (MWD), and available phosphorous (P) and potassium (K) were determined. Corn yield components (including number of kernel rows per corn, number of grains per corn row, ear cob weight, hundred weight of grains, ear weight, grain weights per ear, biological yield and grain yield) were measured.Results and DiscussionThe highest TOC (0.96%), CS (18.7 ton/ha), AC (398 mg/kg), CMI (74.8), BR (0.118 mgCO2/g.d) and MWD (1.82 mm) were observed in MT treatment. However, no significant difference was detected between MT and CT in terms of AC, CS and CMI. Moreover, the lowest TOC (0.74%) was measured in NT, which showed no significant difference with CT treatment (0.83%). Reduced destruction of soil structure coupled with the increased MWD, and increased inputs of crop residues through MT, resulted to the protection of organic matter against microbial decomposition. Soil structuring, represented by BD, was improved under conservation tillage treatments (NT and MT).Among cover crops, hairy vetch treatment demonstrated the highest TOC (1.0%), CS (19.5 ton/ha), AC (427 mg/kg), CMI (80.3) and MWD (1.73 mm). However, these indicators, except CMI, were not significantly different between the two cover crops. On the contrary, these indicators were lowest in the control (no cover crop). Moreover, AC and CMI were not significantly different between grass pea and the control. Carbon stock was increased by 54 and 40% in hairy vetch and grass pea treatments, respectively, relative to the control. In general, cover crop cultivation combined with conservation tillage practices introduced additional biomass to the soil which in turn improved soil organic matter over time and enhanced soil quality.The lowest amounts of biological yield (1663 g/m2), grain yield (507 g/m2), hundred weight of grains 11.0 g), ear weight (91.4 g), grain weights per ear (62.9 g), and number of kernel rows per corn (13) were measured in CT system. In contrast, the highest grain yield (637 g/m2), hundred grain weight (13.6 g), ear weight (108.4 g), and grain weights per ear (81.9 g) were measured in NT treatment. However, the biological yield showed no significant difference between NT and CT. Soil quality improvement in conservation tillage treatments explains the enhancement of certain yield components. Biological yield and number of grains per row demonstrated significant difference between cover crop treatments; the maximum of biological yield (2103 g/m2) and of number of grains per row (44) was measured in hairy vetch treatment. Moreover, the lowest of biologigal yield (1589 g/m2) was observed in the control (no cover crop) treatment. Conclusions All soil quality indicators, except available P, were improved under MT as compared with CT. Our three-year study revealed that among conservation tillage treatments, MT improved majority of soil quality indicators compared to NT. Therefore, minimum tillage practice seems to be more sustainable in this study area. Conservation tillage treatments (MT and NT) also enhanced corn grain yield, grain weights per ear and number of grain rows per ear compared to to the CT. Both cover crops improved most soil quality indicators. Moreover, both cover crops induced significant effect on biological yield, although hairy vetch was more effective than grass pea. As a whole, the integration of minimum tillage with hairy vetch cover crop is considered as a sustainable cropping system for the improvement of soil quality and corn yield in this area.

Cover crops and N fertilization strongly impact the forms of soil organic C and N and their availability, which change the responses of plants to N fertilization and soil organic C accumulation. Our study objectives were to evaluate the effects of cover crops and N doses on soil total and soluble C and N contents, N fractions, and potentially available N in a long-term no-till experiment. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design with split plots and four replicates. The main treatments were cover crops species, jack bean, lablab bean, millet, velvet bean, and fallow cultivated prior to maize. Secondary treatments included two doses of mineral N (0 and 120 kg ha−1). Soil samples were collected at depths of 0–5, 5–10, 10–20, and 20–40 cm, which were analyzed for total and water-soluble C and N contents, N fractions (acid hydrolysis method), and potentially available N (hot KCl solution and direct steam distillation methods). Cover crop velvet bean resulted in the highest soil organic carbon levels, and cover crop millet plus fertilization resulted in the highest levels of soil total N. The amino sugar was the largest N fraction, which decreased by 8% with N fertilization. The soluble C and N content strongly correlated with total and available N content. The changes in soil N were influenced by cover crop species and fertilization and the interactions of both, so the combination of fertilization regime and cover crops must be chosen with care. Additionally, legumes are a good source of plant and soil N in systems with low input of N via fertilizer; however, the combination of N fertilizer with legumes can reduce soil N reserves, leading to its long-term depletion.

No tillage (NT) has been proposed as a practice to reduce the adverse effects of tillage on contaminant (e.g., sediment and nutrient) losses to waterways. Nonetheless, previous reports on impacts of NT on nitrate (NO3−) leaching are inconsistent. A global meta‐analysis was conducted to test the hypothesis that the response of NO3− leaching under NT, relative to tillage, is associated with tillage type (inversion vs non‐inversion tillage), soil properties (e.g., soil organic carbon [SOC]), climate factors (i.e., water input), and management practices (e.g., NT duration and nitrogen fertilizer inputs). Overall, compared with all forms of tillage combined, NT had 4% and 14% greater area‐scaled and yield‐scaled NO3− leaching losses, respectively. The NO3− leaching under NT tended to be 7% greater than that of inversion tillage but comparable to non‐inversion tillage. Greater NO3− leaching under NT, compared with inversion tillage, was most evident under short‐duration NT (<5 years), where water inputs were low (<2 mm day−1), in medium texture and low SOC (<1%) soils, and at both higher (>200 kg ha−1) and lower (0–100 kg ha−1) rates of nitrogen addition. Of these, SOC was the most important factor affecting the risk of NO3− leaching under NT compared with inversion tillage. Globally, on average, the greater amount of NO3− leached under NT, compared with inversion tillage, was mainly attributed to corresponding increases in drainage. The percentage of global cropping land with lower risk of NO3− leaching under NT, relative to inversion tillage, increased with NT duration from 3 years (31%) to 15 years (54%). Understanding the effects of different tillage practices on functional microbial abundance and composition in nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and sulfur (S) cycles are essential for the sustainable utilization of black soils. Based on an 8-year field experiment located in Changchun, Jilin Province, we analyzed the abundance and composition of N, P and S cycling microorganisms and their driving factors in different depths of black soil under no tillage (NT) and conventional tillage (CT). Results showed that compared with CT, NT significantly increased soil water content (WC) and microbial biomass carbon (MBC) at soil depth of 0-20 cm. Compared with CT, NT significantly increased the abundances of functional and encoding genes related to N, P and S cycling, including the nosZ gene encoding N2O reductase, the ureC gene performing organic nitrogen ammoniation, the nifH gene encoding nitrogenase ferritin, the functional genes phnK and phoD driving organic phosphorus mineralization, the encoding pyrroloquinoline quinone synthase ppqC gene and the encoding exopolyphosphate esterase ppX gene, and the soxY and yedZ genes driving sulfur oxidation. The results of variation partitioning analysis and redundancy analysis showed that soil basic properties were the main factors affecting the microbial composition of N, P and S cycle functions (the total interpretation rate was 28.1%), and that MBC and WC were the most important drivers of the functional potential of soil microorganisms in N, P and S cycling. Overall, long-term no tillage could increase the abundance of functional genes of soil microorganisms by affecting soil environment. From the perspective of molecular biology, our results elucidated that no tillage could be used as an effective soil management measure to improve soil health and maintain green agricultural development. Biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) is a sustainable approach to improving soil fertility that not only provides nitrogen to subsequent crops but also reduces the impacts of synthetic fertilizers. Here, a field experiment was established within the faba bean (Vicia faba L.), cv Prothabat 69-durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. subsp. Durum (Desf)), cv Iride rotation framework of a long-term experiment in southern Italy to quantify BNF over two consecutive years (2012/13–2013/14). The effect of tillage systems (reduced, conventional, and no tillage) on faba bean N2 fixation was estimated at the flowering and maturity stages via the natural abundance technique, using wheat as a reference crop. The effect of tillage on the percentage of nitrogen fixation from the atmosphere (Ndfa) and the amount of N2 fixed (kg ha−1) were higher under a no-tillage system in both years and at both growth stages, with values of 66.5% at flowering and 81.7% at maturity. The same trend was reported for the amount of N2 fixed (kg N ha−1) at both faba bean growth stages. The N balance was positive in both years, with a mean value of 40.4 kg N ha−1, across all tillage systems; this value was greater in the no-tillage systems (45.7 kg N ha−1) with respect to the others. The values for the organic matter content and stability index were higher under the no-tillage system, which provided favourable conditions that improved N2 fixation by faba beans. The overall results indicate that no-tillage soil management represents a sustainable strategy for improving soil quality and fertility, therefore reducing the dependency of agriculture on synthetic fertilizers. A field experiment was carried out during the agricultural season (2021-2022) in Al-Samawah district in the Um Al-Akf region, which is (5 km from the center of Al-Muthanna Governorate). The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of tillage systems and boron spraying on some physical properties of the soil and growth and yield of wheat crop .The experiment was carried out according to the Split Block Design method, using the randomized complete block design (R.C.B.D), and with three replications. The experiment contained (36) experimental units, each area of which was 4.0 m² .Each experimental unit contained (10) lines, the Distance between one line and another was (20) cm. The experiment included two factors, the first was the tillage systems (no tillage ; reduce tillage at a depth of (10 cm) and conventional tillage at a depth of (20 cm) which occupied the vertical distribution. The second factor was the spraying of boron (0, 50, 100 and 150) mg B L-1, which occupied the horizontal distribution. Boron was sprayed at the stage of 75% flowering, and on 18/11/2021 wheat cultivar (Ibaa 99) was planted. The results of the study indicated that the conventional tillage system was significantly superior in reducing the value of bulk density, as it gave the lowest average of 1.41 mg m-3, and was also superior in increasing porosity by giving it the highest average of 46.64 %. While the no-till system was significantly superior in the characteristics of plant height, number of tillers, number of grains per spike, and grain yield, as it gave the highest averages (79.66 cm, 279.1 tillers m-2, 55.95 grains spike-1, and 3.540 ton h-1 ) respectively. While the Reduce tillage system was significantly superior. in the characteristic of harvest index by giving it the highest average amounted to 43.57%. As for the effect of boron, it was significant in most of the characteristics of the yield and its components, as the concentration of 150 mg B L1 was significantly superior in the characteristic of the number of grains per spike 60.66 grains spike-1, the weight of 1000 grain 36.30 g, and the yield 3.498 ton h-1, the treatment of overlapping (Reduce tillage x 100 mg B L-1 ) recorded the highest average weight of 1000 grains was 38.03g. Maize (Zea mays L.) is one of the main agricultural crops grown worldwide under very diverse climate and soil conditions. For maize cultivation in a conventional tillage system, autumn plowing is a mandatory condition. Minimum soil tillage or no tillage has been applied in recent years, both in research and in production, for reasons relating to soil conservation and fuel economy. This paper presents the results of the research executed under pedoclimatic conditions at the Agricultural Research and Development Station Turda (ARDS Turda, Romania; chernozem soil) regarding the behavior of the maize hybrid Turda 332 cultivated in four tillage systems and two levels of fertilization during the period of 2016–2022. The following soil tillage systems were applied: a conventional tillage system (CT) and unconventional tillage systems in three variants—a minimum tillage system with a chisel (MTC), a minimum tillage system with a disk (MTD), and a no-tillage system (NT). They were applied with two levels of fertilization: basic fertilization (350 kg ha−1 NPK 16:16:16, applied at sowing) and optimized fertilization (350 kg ha−1 NPK 16:16:16 applied at sowing + 150 kg ha−1 calcium ammonium nitrate with additional fertilization in the phenophase of the maize with 6–7 leaves). The results highlight the fact that under the conditions of chernozem soils with a high clay content (41% clay content), maize does not lend itself to cultivation in MTD and NT, requiring deeper mobilization, with the yield data confirming this fact. This is because under the agrotechnical conditions for sowing carried out in MTD and NT, the seeder used (Maschio Gaspardo MT 6R) does not allow for the high-quality sowing of maize, especially under dry soil conditions. Instead, the MTC system could be an alternative to the conventional tillage system, with the yield difference being below 100 kg ha−1.

Due to its advantages, remote sensing monitoring has been used in various applications and made noteworthy contributions to understanding soil and plant processes, as well as in the agriculture sector. The aim of the work is to compare the return of durum wheat crops in conservative agricultural practices in Mediterranean climate conditions by analysing the data from the Sentinel2 satellite through three spectral indices. The analysed spectral indices have different interpretations and therefore have been studied in different periods: (i) NDVI (normalized difference vegetation index) for the evaluation of the vegetative vigour from January to June; (ii) NDWI (normalized difference water index) for the moisture of covered soil from January to June and of bare soil after harvesting from June to August; and (iii) NMDI (normalized multi-band drought index) for the variability of bare soil moisture from June to August. With reference to the machines used in cultivation practices, a further purpose of the study is to investigate the effects of automatic guidance versus manual guidance on production yields and on the spectral indices considered. The first results show that the NDVI follows crop phenological stages by reaching the maximum values in correspondence with the stem elongation and booting stages. Additionally, the NDWI showed the same trend as the NDVI during the current crop. After harvesting, the NDWI showed higher values in the plots cultivated under conservation tillage practices. In the same period, the NMDI showed the same results as the NDWI and a positive correlation, confirming that tillage practices could imply a lower ability to retain water in drought time. BACKGROUND: Conservative tillage techniques have several agro‐ecological benefits for organic farming. The application of these techniques, however, can create quite a few challenges due to the increased weed competition. Here, we report the results of an organic field experiment in which the responses of wheat and weeds to no tillage (NT) were evaluated compared with conventional tillage (CT). We also tested the hypothesis that, under NT, moving up the sowing date, compared with using the ordinary sowing date for the study area, can result in increased competitiveness of the crop against weeds. Two wheat genotypes, a modern variety and an ancient landrace, were tested. RESULTS: Substantial reductions in grain yield and protein content were observed in wheat under NT than under CT when the ordinary sowing date was used. This was mainly due to the considerable increase in weed biomass under NT. The tillage system also altered the composition of weed flora, with some species favored under NT and others under CT. In general, early sowing mitigated the detrimental effect of NT on yield. The two genotypes responded differently to the treatments. The early sowing in the modern variety reduced but did not eliminate the advantages of CT over NT, whereas no appreciable differences in grain yield were observed between CT and NT in the landrace. CONCLUSION: Our results show clearly that, under organic management, using NT alone as a substitute for CT is not agronomically feasible. Moving up the sowing date and using a competitive genotype can help mitigate the negative effects of NT, but surely a more effective application of NT could be achieved by acting simultaneously on other factors of the cropping management system (e.g. crop rotation, fertilization strategy, type of seeder). © 2022 The Authors. No tillage was introduced to Northeast China to prevent the soil degradation caused by conventional tillage systems. However, there are concerns that no tillage will result in soil mechanical impedance. In this study, we investigated the effects of conventional tillage and no tillage on soil strength properties using a long-term field study initiated in 2011 on a silt clay loam soil. In 2018 and 2019, soil bulk density, water content, the degree of compactness, and penetrometer resistance were measured before tillage and after planting, and also, the changes in soil profile water content and penetrometer resistance were monitored during drying periods. Results showed that conventional tillage led to the formation of a compacted zone beneath the cultivated layer, with higher bulk density, degree of compactness, and penetrometer resistance values. After converting from conventional tillage to no tillage for 8 to 9 years, the bulk density, penetrometer resistance, and degree of compactness were increased to a moderate extent in the topsoil but were lowered in the subsurface soil. During drying periods, as compared to conventional tillage plots, the no tillage plots maintained higher water contents, which resulted in lower penetrometer resistances below a 15 cm depth and the later arrival of the threshold penetrometer resistance of 2 MPa. Rotational tillage could be an advisable attempt to overcome some of the adverse impacts of mono conservation tillage, and it is necessary to assess the feasibility of adoption of rotational tillage for sustaining productivity in the long run. Data from an 8-year site-specific field study conducted on the Loess Plateau were used to estimate the long-term effect of rotational tillage on soil water dynamic, soil properties and winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) productivity. Three mono-tillage (No tilling (NT), subsoiling (ST) and ploughing (PT)) and three rotational tillage (NT/ST (NT and ST performed alternately), ST/PT, PT/NT) methods were applied after wheat harvest. Results showed the mean grain weight in the three rotational tillage treatments was 4.5% to 16.9% greater than in NT, and water use efficiency (WUE) was 5.0% to 18.8% greater over the 8 years. Rotational tillage could overcome the increased bulk density and nutrition stratification caused by NT and soil degradation due to PT. NT/ST was the best rotational tillage pattern with the highest grain yield and WUE, best soil property and relatively low mechanical cost in the present study. Here, we demonstrate that rotational tillage can improve wheat yield, WUE and soil properties compared with long-term no tilling and recommend using NT/ST as the optimal tillage pattern in similar ecological regions. Conservation and regenerative agriculture are widely considered as approaches aiming at addressing challenges in relation to climate change and soil quality. In that respect, no tillage (NT) and use of cover crops (CCs) are seen as key elements in achieving the sustainability goals of these approaches, but the long-term individual and interactive effects of these elements remain unknown. We examined the impact of tillage (NT and mouldboard ploughing) combined with a fodder radish CC in continuous cereal cropping. Soil was sampled in the 0–10 and 10–20 cm layer after two decades of treatments in the CENTS experiment at AU Viborg (Denmark) situated on a sandy loam with 9% clay. We assessed soil structural quality, SOC stocks, clay dispersibility (CD), wet stability of aggregates (WSA) and soil pore characteristics. Neither tillage nor cover cropping affected the SOC stock in the 0–20 cm soil layer. No tillage improved CD, WSA and plant available water capacity in 0–10 cm depth as compared to ploughing. The marked improvement in CD and WSA of NT soils could not be explained by SOC per se, but rather positive effects ascribed to absence of disturbance. In contrast, soil porosity, especially in 10–20 cm depth, the fraction of soil volume represented by >30 µm pores and gas diffusivity decreased, and NT soils resulted in a less good soil structural quality. The inclusion of CCs improved soil structural quality and the functionality of the soil macropore system. Hence, CCs have the potential to alleviate negative effects of NT on pore characteristics at macroscale. Furthermore, we found that the positive effects of NT on CD and WSA and of CCs on pore characteristics at macroscale were much more pronounced after long- (20 yrs NT; 13 yrs CC) than after medium-term (10 yrs NT; 5 yrs CC) underlining the value of long-term conservation agriculture experiments. • No till and mouldboard ploughing were combined with a fodder radish cover crop. • Soil was sampled after two decades of treatments. • Tillage and cover crops did not affect the SOC stock in 0–20 cm depth. • No tillage improved soil structural stability markedly due to lack of disturbance. • Cover crops alleviated negative effects of no till on macropore characteristics. Managing soil biodiversity using reduced tillage is a popular approach, yet soil bacteriobiomes in the agroecosystems of Siberia has been scarcely studied, especially as they are related to tillage. We studied bacteriobiomes in Chernozem under natural steppe vegetation and cropped for wheat using conventional or no tillage in a long-term field trial in the Novosibirsk region, Russia, by using the sequence diversity of the V3/V4 region of 16S rRNA genes. Actinobacteria, Acidobacteria, and Proteobacteria summarily accounted for 80% of the total number of sequences, with Actinobacteria alone averaging 51%. The vegetation (natural vs. crop) and tillage (ploughed vs. no-till) affected the bacterial relative abundance at all taxonomic levels and many taxa, e.g., hundreds of OTUs. However, such changes did not translate into α-biodiversity changes, i.e., observed and potential OTUs’ richness, Shannon, and Simpson, excepting the slightly higher evenness and equitability in the top 0–5 cm of the undisturbed soil. As for the β-biodiversity, substituting conventional ploughing with no tillage and maintaining the latter for 12 years notably shifted the soil bacteriobiome closer to the one in the undisturbed soil. This study, presenting the first inventory of soil bacteriobiomes under different tillage in the south of West Siberia, underscores the need to investigate the seasonality and longevity aspects of tillage, especially as they are related to crop production.

Tillage management practices have a dynamic impact on soil hydraulic properties and processes. There is a need for information about the effect of tillage practices on soil hydraulic properties for crops growing under sprinkler irrigation in the northern Great Plains. A long-term study was conducted from 2014 to 2018 to examine the effect of no tillage (NT) and conventional tillage (CT) on the saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks) of a sandy loam soil in a two-year corn (Zea mays L.)–soybean (Glycine max L.) rotation. In situ Ks measurements were taken in the center of crop rows within NT and CT plots using a pressure ring infiltrometer at the soil surface (0–15 cm) and a constant head well permeameter at the subsurface (15–30 cm). Results indicated that Ks values were well described by a log-normal distribution at both depths. Results showed that logarithmic Ks (log Ks) was not significantly impacted by tillage. Averaged over the five-year study, the log-transformed Ks of 100 measurements was not significantly affected by tillage in the surface layer under either corn or soybean nor in the subsurface layer under soybean. However, the mean soil log Ks in CT plots (1.784 mm h−1) was significantly greater than that in NT plots (1.186 mm h−1) in the 15–30 cm layer under corn, while Ks was nearly 50% greater in CT than in NT. Large values for the coefficient of variation (CV%) of Ks measurements exhibited significant spatial variations of Ks among plots within each tillage treatment at both the soil surface and subsurface layers under corn and soybean. Thus, more studies under different soils and cropping systems with a larger sample size per treatment are needed to lower spatial variability within treatments and validate the effect of tillage on soil hydraulic properties.

Ecological cultivation is a promising regime for medicinal plant production. For a long time, unreasonable farming methods have threatened soil health and medicinal agriculture and restricted the sustainable development of ecological agriculture for medicinal plants. However, there is a lack of comprehensive discourse and discussion about the pros and cons of different tillage regimes. Here, the research trend and application prospects of no-tillage (NT) are comprehensively reviewed, and the ecological benefits, challenges, and opportunities of the NT system in ecological agriculture of medicinal plants are scrutinized, aiming to call for an about-face in the sustainable conservation and utilization of both phytomedicine resources and agricultural/ecological resources. An exhaustive literature search in PubMed, Bing, Scopus, and CNKI was performed to outline the research trend in conservation tillage and medicinal plants during the recent four decades. The application of NT has a long history and can reduce tillage frequency and intensity and protect soil from erosion and deterioration. NT is often combined with organic mulch to significantly reduce soil disturbance. NT and stover mulching have the advantages of saving manpower and resources and improving soil quality, crop yield, and quality. The ecological and economic benefits of NT in long-term medicinal plant cultivation could be prominent. In developing medicinal plant cultivation, competing with food crops should be avoided as much as possible, and the impact on the production of major grain crops should be minimized. Therefore, the full utilization of soil resources in forests, mountains, and wasteland is advocated, and sustainable soil utilization is the core issue in the process of land reclamation. NT and stover mulching not only inherit the traditional concept of “natural farming”, conform to the basic laws of ecology, as well as the growth characteristics of medicinal plants, but also protect the ecological environment of the production area. It would become the core strategy of ecological agriculture for medicinal plants. Our summary and discussions would help propose countermeasures to popularize NT and organic mulch, promote relevant research and scientific allocation of resources, and adapt to local conditions to achieve precise management and harmonize conservation and production of medicinal plants.

To better understand the effects of tillage practice and fertilization management on greenhouse gas emissions and yields, a four-year field experiment was conducted to assess the effects of tillage practices (rotary tillage (RT) and no tillage (NT)) on the emissions of methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) and rice yield under four fertilization management strategies (no fertilizer without straw (CK), inorganic fertilizer without straw (F), inorganic fertilize with biochar (FB), and inorganic fertilizer with straw (FS)). The results showed that NT significantly reduced CH4 emissions by 21.1% and 52.6% compared to RT in early and late rice, respectively. Conversely, NT led to a significant increase in N2O emissions by 101.0%, 79.0%, and 220.8% during the early rice, late rice, and fallow periods. Nevertheless, global warming potential (GWP) and greenhouse gas intensity (GHGI) were significantly mitigated, respectively, by 36.4% and 35.9% in NT, compared to RT treatment. There were significant interactions between tillage practice and fertilization management. Compared with CK, the F and FB treatments significantly reduced the GWP, respectively, by 40.4% and 53.8%, as well as the GHGI, respectively, by 58.2% and 69.9% in the RT condition; however, no significant difference was found under the NT condition. In contrast, the FS treatment significantly increased GWP and GHGI in both the RT and NT conditions. Overall, FB treatment had the same significantly low GHGI rating, with a value of 0.44 kg CO2-eq kg−1 yield year−1 in RT and NT. Thus, the conversion of straw to biochar and its application to rice fields is a potentially sustainable agricultural strategy for mitigating GHG emissions and increasing yields. The factors influencing on seed germination and wheat yield are such as the optimum use of tillage and seeding methods. This study was a randomized complete block experimental design with four treatments and four replications to determine the suitable tillage method for a grain drill with bent leg furrow opener (bent leg grain drill) and also determine the effect of these implements on wheat yield and water productivity in dry soil conditions. Treatments were seeding wheat by a bent leg grain drill in three tillage application of no-tillage (NT), reduced tillage (RT), conventional tillage (CT) and also control (conventional tillage + seeding wheat by conventional grain drill). Results indicated that tillage methods and seeding wheat by the bent leg grain drill affected residue remained on the soil surface, soil bulk density, seedling emergence percent, wheat yield and water productivity. Reduce tillage by the bent leg tillage implement and seeding by the bent leg grain drill (RT) increased residue remained on the soil surface (45%), seedling emergence (13%), wheat yield (11%) and water productivity (11%) compared to the control. The bent leg tillage provides a proper seedbed for seeding wheat with less passes of tractor in dry soil conditions. Karst rocky desertification associated with human disturbance is one of the most serious eco-environmental problems, threatening the sustainable development of agriculture in southwestern China. In the current study, the practice of conservation tillage as one of the best ways of reducing the constraints is addressed. During a two-year trial (2014–2015), the effects of no tillage with straw cover (NT) and traditional tillage (TT) on soil properties and maize yields were investigated in karst regions, Southwest China. The results showed that the trial with NT increased soil moisture content by 3%, while decreasing soil bulk density by 7% in the top 30 cm compared with TT. In 2014, within 0–30 cm of soil depth, total nitrogen under NT treatment was 5% higher than that under TT treatment. In 2015, the mean soil organic matter (SOM) and available P were enhanced to 12% and 13% in 0–30 cm soil depth more than that under TT, respectively. The trial with NT significantly (p < 0.05) increased available N in the top 20 cm by 9% as compared to TT. This improvement in soil physical and chemical properties might have increased the crop yield. After the two-year trial with NT, the mean maize yields increased by 11% compared with the TT trial. Managing soil biodiversity by reduced or no tillage is an increasingly popular approach. Soil mycobiome in Siberian agroecosystems has been scarcely studied; little is known about its changes due to tillage. We studied mycobiome in Chernozem under natural steppe vegetation and cropped for wheat by conventional or no tillage in a long-term field trial in West Siberia, Russia, by using ITS2 rDNA gene marker (Illumina MiSeq sequencing). Half of the identified OTUs were Ascomycota with 82% of the total number of sequence reads and showing, like other phyla (Basidiomycota, Zygomycota, Mortierellomycota, Chytridiomycota, Glomeromycota), field-related differential abundance. Several dominant genera (Mortierella, Chaetomium, Clonostachys, Gibberella, Fusarium, and Hypocrea) had increased abundance in both cropped soils as compared with the undisturbed one and therefore can be safely assumed to be associated with wheat residues. Fungal OTUs' richness in cropped soils was less than in the undisturbed one; however, no tillage shifted soil mycobiome composition closer to the latter, albeit, it was still similar to the ploughed soil, despite different organic matter and wheat residue content. The study provided the first inventory of soil mycobiome under different tillage treatments in the south of West Siberia, where wheat production is an important section of the regional economy. In the context of climate change, agricultural cultivation, as one of the most vulnerable sectors, is under threat. Extreme weather and climate conditions have caused a series of problems, such as yield loss, more serious pests and diseases, and declining biodiversity. Conservation tillage is considered a potential method to improve climate resilience, yet the intrinsic mechanism of how conservation tillage functions to improve the climate resilience of agriculture is uncertain. Here, we performed document analysis to explore how conservation tillage stabilizes and increases crop yield and reduces greenhouse gases. We reviewed the definition of resilience and proposed the practice of conservation tillage. Our research found that conservation tillage has the potential of improving soil health and reducing greenhouse gases to enhance climate resilience. Although there is some evidence demonstrating that conservation tillage has a negative impact on crop yield and greenhouse gases, we still advocate the adoption of conservation tillage according to local conditions. We suggest that choosing proper practices, such as crop rotation, the use of cover crops, and holistic grazing, when used along with conservation tillage, can maximize the benefits of conservation tillage and alleviate the possible negative effects of this practice. The development of sustainable application practices, which do not demand incorporation into the soil, is necessary to encourage slurry use in conservation agriculture (CA). Incorporation is the most common practice to reduce nitrogen losses from the applied slurry. However, in CA, soil disturbance must be avoided. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate strategies to reduce gaseous emissions from dairy slurry applied to stubble-covered soil without incorporation. We evaluated (1) effects on ammonia (NH3) emissions of pretreatment by acidification (ADS), irrigation (IR) and placement under the stubble (US); and (2) effects of ADS, IR, US and delayed fertilization (RDS T16) on greenhouse gases (GHG). The results of the evaluated strategies were compared to raw slurry (RDS) and ammonium sulphate (MS). Additionally, in experiment 2, the results were compared to ammonium sulphate (MB) and slurry injection (IN), both in bare soil. ADS, US and IR decreased NH3 emissions by 66%, 60% and 32.5%, respectively, with total N emissions NH3 emissions accounting for more than 79% of N losses in slurry-based treatments. Late application reduced N2O emissions by 48%. GHG emissions from ADS, US and IR were similar to those from MS, MB and IN. Conservation Agriculture includes practices focused on the conservation and the restoration of main soil features, such as organic carbon content, structure, and biological diversity and activity. Our study was conducted in three farms in North-Eastern Italy in pairs of closely located fields to compare conservation agriculture (no tillage, cover cropping) with conventional agriculture. Differences in terms of soil enzymatic activity, such as FDA and β-glucosidase through spectrophotometric analyses, microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen contents, total organic carbon, and nitrogen contents with CNS Elemental Analyzer and soil arthropod community via the QBS-ar index were investigated. Enzymatic activities resulted to be readily and positively affected by conservation agriculture whereas total and microbial carbon, nitrogen contents, and microarthropod community seemed to be more dependent on the time factor. The responses to conservation agriculture differed between the three farms, pointing out that differences in soil features may drive the effectiveness of conservation management. N stock, maybe dependent on previous soil management, might be the key characteristic able to influence soil evolution in the studied conditions.
