Media coverage of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) often focuses excessively on challenges and deficits, influencing public perceptions, but there is little research on media portrayals of HBCU infractions. This study delves into the portrayal of Division I HBCU infractions from 2016 to 2020 through a textual analysis of 60 article headlines from local, regional, and national newspapers. The research examines general framing strategies, temporal changes, specific frames, prominent themes, and attribution of responsibility. Results indicate that the media often frames these infractions episodically rather than thematically over the 5-year span, with limited case details. The headlines emphasized specific issues of reprimand and redemption, often holding the organization accountable. Newspapers contribute to public opinion on athletic infractions by presenting these incidents in an engaging narrative. Ethnic prejudice poses great challenges to adolescents' adjustment to multicultural societies. However, little is known about the role of the media in influencing attitudes in adolescence. Combining information environment and ecological development theories, the current study examined the longitudinal associations between the quantity, valence (i.e., neutral, positive, and negative), and target (i.e., migrant, refugee, and foreigner) of the news about ethnic minority groups and youth's affective and cognitive prejudice. In total, 962 adolescents (Mage = 15.67, 48.13% females) completed questionnaires at two time points, and news data were gathered from a national newspaper. While news quantity did not matter, positive and negative news were respectively associated with reduced and increased levels of cognitive, but not affective, prejudice. Nuanced associations emerged when accounting for the news target. Results were replicated regardless of adolescents' direct consumption of newspapers. Aim: To explore the way the nursing profession was portrayed in online news coverage before and after the COVID‐19 pandemic. Background: The power of the media can be used as a tool to introduce nursing services to society, make nursing visible, and influence the public perception of nursing. Introduction: Analyzing the image of nursing as portrayed in the news can be a guide for more effective management of the media as a tool for positioning nursing in the future and presenting the right message. Methods: A qualitative design was applied. Three online newspapers published in the Turkish language—the most widely read newspapers in Turkey—were analyzed. The sample for this research consisted of 505 news articles containing the keywords "nurse" and "nursing" published before and after the COVID‐19 outbreak. The MAXQDA2022 software was used for data management. Results: The articles selected were themed as news reflecting the nursing profession negatively, positively, and neutrally. When the negative and positive themes were compared, the two most repeated subthemes included (1) working conditions and being unprofessionalism; (2) impact on health, social recognition, and neutral included only subtheme that happens to you as a citizen/individual. Conclusion: Compared with the pre‐COVID‐19 period, there was an increase in news coverage reflecting portrayed nursing positively on the nursing profession in the post‐COVID‐19 period. Mass media, which are indispensable in social communication, can be used as an effective tool to improve the image of nursing in society. Implications for nursing: From nursing students to policymakers, all professionals must act in a planned and purposeful manner to present nursing professionals positively as leaders in public healthcare. U.S. industrial plants emit around four billion pounds of toxic chemicals annually, posing health and economic risks. This study investigates the role of newspapers in influencing plants' toxic emissions. We use local newspaper closures as an exogenous shock to news coverage and observe a 10% increase in emissions in affected counties, compared to plants owned by the same firm in other counties. Our findings indicate that this increase is not attributable to variations in environmental policies among firms, disparate economic conditions across counties, or heightened production levels at these facilities. Instead the rise in toxic emissions is driven by an elevated amount of toxins emitted per unit of output. We also uncover that the observed effect is more pronounced in areas with a lower newspaper-to-population ratio before the closure and in communities more concerned about environmental issues. Moreover, we find that the spread of online media doesn't mitigate the consequences of newspaper closures on toxic emissions. Simple Summary: Australian newspaper reporting (1998–2012) about the Australian White Ibis (Threskiornis molucca) typically presented the inland, native bird species as a pest, or as a victim, due to the birds' relocation to urban environments along the eastern coast of Australia. Ibis populations have adapted well to their new habitat seeing a steady increase in bird colonies. With this increase has come complaints from human residents about the negative impacts of the birds in the shared environment. Our research compares the language used in daily newspapers from Inner Mongolia and Mongolia, looking for patterns and distinctions in the content. To comprehend language use at different levels, we concentrated on articles, headlines, and other textual elements. Daily newspapers, which reflect societal trends and current events, provide insights into language usage in everyday situations. Through a comparative analysis of these newspapers, we hope to identify linguistic differences shaped by social, political, and cultural contexts, advancing our knowledge of language dynamics within the Mongolian-speaking community. This study examines the ways widely circulated U.S. newspapers have articulated the idea of "speciesism" and its associated idea "animal rights" in relation to "racism" to understand how powerful news media helps to shape the public understanding of the interlocking systems of oppression that cuts across the human and the more-than-human world. The archives (1987 to 2023) of three U.S. newspapers - The New York Times, USA Today, and The Washington Post - were analyzed, using qualitative content analysis. The ideas of articulation, symbolic annihilation, erasure, and discursive closure served as the analytical guides for the analysis. The analysis shows that there is gross underrepresentation of speciesism and even far less representation of the relationship between speciesism and racism and between animal rights and anti-racism. The article considers the pivotal organizing role of the revolutionary paper Congress Militant for the Marxist Workers' Tendency of the African National Congress from the late 1980s to the mid-1990s, a period characterized by mass popular struggles against apartheid, violence, and political negotiations. Congress Militant was instrumental in shaping the internal life of the Tendency, from being a space of reportage of local struggles and political analyses to contributing to the development of a community of revolutionary cadres who belonged to national and international organizations. It was also the principal public vehicle for the propagation of the Tendency's politics, serving as a tool of intervention in numerous campaigns and in recruitment. As such, the paper offers a window into the history of the changing politics of one socialist organization during the tumultuous years of the early 1990s in South Africa, including its criticisms of the compromises made by the ANC leadership during the negotiations. This study analyzed JMCQ articles in the specific topic area of mass communication technology and media channels, overall and across four 20-year periods. Primary topics changed from emphasizing media industry and policy issues, international issues of information freedom, audience research, and WWII media issues in early periods to more specific regulatory issues, ratings and audience analyses, macro and social issues, and media technology development issues in more recent periods. JMCQ serves as a treasure trove of the history of broadcast media technology and competition, policy debates, and audience interests, with a recent emphasis on more rigorous empirical analyses.

In the article the author examines the features of training convergent journalists within student’s media. For this purpose, the main typological characteristics of student’s media were studied, the influence of student’s media on the formation of professional competencies among students was revealed, the principles and methods of organizing the work of student media editorial offices were considered, and finally, the process of their unification into the convergent editorial office of FST-media was studied. During this research an expert interview was conducted with the expert community about the features of training convergent journalists, and also a content-analysis of the content of student’s media in terms of their correlation with the information demand thanks to the basic principle of training future journalists, from narrow specialization to universalism.

The article analyses the educational activities of Tatars, the emergence and development of printing and polygraphic production in Turkestan in the late 19th – early 20th centuries. The development of printing in the languages of the local Turkic population in Turkestan is associated with the socio-cultural and religious activism of Tatars. The author analyses historical and archival documents, a number of printed publications in the Uzbek language of the specified period and traces the logistics of the formation of printing culture in this region, which was significant for the Russian Empire. The article shows the effects of the modernisation trend among Tatars in the context of the scientific and technological revolution, and its transit through the Russian society to the foreign Turkic peoples of the country. The author describes the activities of Tatar typesetters who brought Muslim fonts for printing to the given region, thereby showing how the provision of a material and technical base stimulated the development of printing for the local Turkic-speaking population. The author demonstrates the development of the printing culture of Turkestan in the late 19th – early 20th centuries through the analysis of various aspects of the activities of such Tatar figures as Shakhimardan Ibragimov, Mukhammad Khasan Chanishev, Shakhingirey Bekkulov, Abdulatif Yaushev, Ali Bektemirov, Ismail Abidov, Arif Klevleyev, Akhmad Donskoy, and Shagid Akhmadiev. Along with that, the author analyses the participation of the Tatar intelligentsia in the development of printing activities and the establishment of printing in the new socio-political conditions that emerged after the revolution of 1917 – already in the Turkestan ASSR, in particular, in the Khorezm and Bukhara People's Soviet Republics.

Indicators are a form of coding that has an important function in ensuring communication in human life and can rank relationships at a certain level and even set boundaries. Indicators play an active role in reaching the target audience through their carriers and transmitters in the communication system they are connected to. Newspapers, which are part of the mass media, are effective at establishing a connection with the reader and helping the codes gain meaning. The purpose of the narrator is to convey to the target audience a certain idea in the context of the subject of the message and to ensure that the desired opinion has a widespread impact. The fact that newspaper news contains many symbols in the context of the use of pictures, letters, and font size makes a serious contribution to semiotic analysis. In this study, the column titled 'Woman Has No Name', published in Siirt Newspaper on March 7, 2022, was examined with semiotic analysis. In the analysis, after drawing attention to the position of women in the world and in our society, the text was analyzed with its sections in the context of the theme, referent and sign system, and word choices. Thus, the effects of the findings obtained on culture and life, the reflections of these effects on the world of meaning, the narrative language of the newspaper news, and the codes implicit in the text were brought out from the deep structure to the surface structure, and a different perspective on semiotics was presented. In the Ottoman Empire, opposition journalism outside the country presented its first examples during the reign of Abdülaziz. Publishing newspapers outside the country reached its peak during the reign of Abdülhamid II due to the repressive political conditions of the period. During these years, pro-Constitution Young Turk groups were organized in centers outside the country. The Young Turks, who turned to press activity to make their political demands known to Istanbul, created an oppositional press and literary movement. The aim of this study is to analyze Abraham Galante's catalog, which is an important document about the newspapers published abroad during the reign of Abdülhamid II. It is very difficult to identify newspapers that opposed the Ottoman court and to have complete access to their collections. The data in Galante's catalog, which he prepared during his years of involvement in the Young Turk movement and his work as a journalist abroad, pioneered studies on the Young Turk press and literature. In this context, Galante's document, which is the first catalog of newspapers published outside the country during the reign of Abdülhamid II, is of great importance. Popularized with the term "news desert," the decline of the number of newspapers has cast a gloom over the future of American democracy. However, there has been little research on what factors are related to such phenomena. To fill this gap, we construct a theoretical framework based on previous research relating market conditions to news deserts, and study how news deserts relate to social capital. Our analyses find population, and education have strong negative associations with news deserts and potential journalism divides, where newspapers decrease disproportionately according to the community's African American composition. Age has a weak negative association with news deserts. Furthermore, our analyses reveal that having more newspapers has a positive effect on community social capital in its economic connectedness, cohesiveness, and civic engagement. Consequently, economic connectedness and cohesiveness positively impact the number of newspapers next year, showing evidence of a virtuous circle. There is a known fact that the public depends largely on the media for information. However, such information might not have been perceived rightly as sent by the media. Hence, the objective of this study is to examine the extent to which information on the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic containment policy flows from the government to the public through the pages of newspapers. Aside from examining how these policies were framed, it seeks to also find out if Nigerians perceived the coverage by newspapers as relevant for them to comply with them. Adopting a descriptive methodological approach which systematically differs from most previous studies because substantial studies on the subject matter use qualitative methods. Findings reveal that Newspapers' framing of COVID-19 stories does not correlate with public adherence to the government's containment policy and the volume of newspaper coverage of COVID-19 stories does not correlate with public perception of the importance of the government containment policy on the disease. The study concluded that even though advancement in technology has given rise to the use of other media such as social media, the efficacy/potency and relevance of the newspaper cannot be brushed aside despite this advancement. It is, however, recommended that further studies should be conducted to examine the challenges faced by press through Key Informant Interview (KII) in the carrying coverage on the COVID-19 pandemic in other to strike balance. The term digital first is frequently used by newspapers to describe how they go about making digital and print news. Yet the literature does not define the term precisely and has not described implications in terms of making news. Furthermore, we know almost nothing about how journalists themselves understand this jargon and how they view what it entails in terms of the (changes to) underlying practices. This research analyzed the production systems of three different types of French-language Swiss newspapers that label their production systems digital first: a local paper, a legacy paper and a metro-style paper. It interviewed 17 of their newsworkers, 15 of which described the way their newspaper makes news as digital first without being prompted. The full range of properties attributed to digital first emerging from the data reflected five dimensions: temporality, content format, workflow, production mindset and business strategy. These five dimensions were conceptualized by building a digital first matrix, thereby contributing to definitional clarity, while also serving as a useful tool to analyze newspaper production. In practice, production and editing resources seem to determine a newspaper's success in fully implementing more ambitious visions of digital first. This paper focuses on the digitization of Punjabi newspapers through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology, a comparative analysis was conducted between Google Document AI and Tesseract OCR solutions. Punjabi newspapers, with their complex layouts, non-standard fonts, and linguistic nuances, pose challenges for OCR systems. The study aimed to evaluate the out-of-the-box performance of OCR solutions in accurately extracting text from Punjabi newspaper scans. Utilizing a benchmarking experiment with a dataset comprising Punjabi newspaper segments, the research addressed questions regarding the comparative performance of Google Document AI and Tesseract in handling Punjabi text. The methodology involved image enhancement, layout analysis, and OCR execution, with qualitative and quantitative analyses conducted to assess precision and reliability. While Tesseract demonstrated competitive performance, Google Document AI exhibited superior accuracy, highlighting the potential of server-based OCR solutions for handling diverse document types. The mask RCNN model is used to extract the layout of newspapers using a layout parser. The findings reveal that while Tesseract demonstrates competitive performance, Google Document AI exhibits superior accuracy. We have performed the text extraction on newspaper segments that are extracted from newspaper images. Specifically, Tesseract achieved an accuracy of 97.20% at the word level and 92.48% at the character level, whereas Google API performed better with an accuracy of 98.86% at the word level and 95.62% at the character level. These findings contribute to the advancement of OCR technology in the context of Punjabi newspaper digitization, facilitating broader access to historical Punjabi texts for scholarly research. Bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) features in global scale assessments of climate mitigation, but with limited exploration of how and where the technology could be deployed. BECCS is unlikely to perform a major role in national strategies whilst key aspects of deployment and public concerns are unaddressed, as happened with fracking. Since public understanding of the technology is limited, there is a crucial role for the news media in facilitating greater public discussion and understanding of BECCS. Here, a news media analysis of both national and regional newspapers explores the ‘storylines’ which frame the public debate on BECCS in the UK, and the coalitions of actors involved in presenting them. Several storylines present a positive framing of BECCS as Necessary and an Opportunity, particularly in regional newspapers of Yorkshire and the Humber where Drax's biomass power station is located. The Anchor for transition storyline describes the regional socio-economic opportunity of Drax's proposed BECCS project. However, this pro-BECCS coalition is undermined by other storylines that frame BECCS as Dangerous and Overhyped. To achieve discursive dominance, facilitating social acceptance and legitimacy for the technology, the positive framing of BECCS will require disarming storylines labelling BECCS as Worse than coal, No silver bullet, an Environmental disaster, and a Distraction. Our results suggest storyline resonance varies according to context, with notable differences between the public discourse at national and regional level; the Anchor for transition storyline resonates in an industrial community facing the socio-economic challenges of decarbonisation.

This study investigates the process of translating newspaper titles from Indonesian to English. This study aims to determine the ability of students to provide equivalent titles of English-language newspapers in Indonesia. In particular, this research is expected to be able to: Overcome the difficulties currently faced by students in translating newspaper titles, showing grammatical deviations that students have in trying to translate newspaper titles, provide evidence of mechanical problems that arise. This research uses a case study approach. There were 15 newspaper headlines which were delivered to as many as 15 respondents who were sixth semester students of the English Department. The data collection method is to talk about instructions to students before starting to translate newspaper titles. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive analysis method. The data obtained is classified into several aspects of analysis including grammatical errors. The results of the analysis show that students earn a percentage depending on their abilities (application of grammar knowledge) or skills, how to translate local newspapers into English, it is true. Therefore, the researcher suggests readers or students to keep themselves busy by reading local newspapers (fajar and kompas) and in English (example: Jakarta post). How public policies convey dementia is an important source of the public’s understanding of dementia, and newspapers are critical to depicting and disseminating this information to the public. The present study used topic modeling strategies to analyze Chinese newspaper portrayals of dementia from 2005 to 2020 to trace changes in key areas of dementia knowledge in relevant policies. Using WiseNews, the largest Chinese media database, we chose 45 newspapers from mainland China and identified 12,719 articles related to dementia. Using latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA), we performed a topic modeling analysis and identified the six most prevalent topics on dementia across articles: lifestyle recommendations, neighborhood life, foundational scientific research, celebrity and media portrayals, dementia caregiving, and pharmaceutical innovations – all related to the dementia knowledge scale’s four dimensions. Findings suggest a steady increase in the number of articles on dementia caregiving and a decline in lifestyle recommendations from 2005 to 2020. However, newspapers continued to stigmatize aging by regularly co-depicting dementia and old age and by using biased terminology. Among the first to investigate dementia’s portrayals in mainland Chinese newspapers, this study illuminates the need for expanding mass media campaigns to raise the country’s dementia knowledge to foster a dementia-inclusive society. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the role of media (including cinema) on the CO2 emission levels of The United States of America (USA). Employing three co-integration methods, namely Canonical Co-Integrating Regression (CCR), Dynamic Least Squares (DOLS), and Fully Modified Least Squares (FMOLS), within the framework of Environmental Kuznet Curves (EKC) theory, we unravel the impact of media coverage on the USA’s carbon footprint. Utilizing Climate Policy Uncertainty index (CPU), extracted from prominent USA newspapers as a main concern, the analysis reveals a noteworthy outcome indicating media coverage pertaining to environmental issues, pollution, and climate changes emerges as a contributing factor in the reduction of CO2 emissions. The study also uses income per capita, renewable energy consumption and foreign direct investment as additional metrics of air pollution. The findings not only shed light on the influential role of media in shaping environmental outcomes but also offer valuable insights to policy makers and governors.

Background and Purpose: Insecurity is a major problem in developing countries, particularly Africa, with Nigeria facing challenges like kidnapping, banditry, militancy, and boko haram, among others, that need to be addressed. Newspapers play a crucial role in helping security agents address these challenges through unbiased reporting. Objectives: This systematic review aims to examine the extent to which scholars pay attention to the role of print media in addressing insecurity in Nigeria and to explore the growth and development of media and insecurity studies in Nigeria based on the collected data from Scopus and Web of Science. Methodology: The systematic review was conducted based on the principles of Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA). Two databases (Scopus and Web of Science) were searched, and 107 related articles were recorded, out of which 21 met the final review criteria. Findings: The results show that Nigerian scholars studying print media and insecurity concentrated more on farmer-herder conflicts and the Boko Haram insurgency, while armed banditry, which has become deadlier in recent times, received little attention from the scholars. Contributions: The study draws attention to newspaper and banditry, an area that print media scholars in Nigeria have mostly ignored. Conclusion: Based on the study’s findings, we concluded that the majority of Nigerian scholars with an interest in print media and insecurity do not often publish their works in outlets indexed in Scopus and Web of Science. Recommendation: Future research on print media and insecurity should pay more attention to armed banditry, which is now a major problem in the country. Communication scholars in Nigeria should also endeavour to publish their findings in journals indexed with Scopus and Web of Science databases.

The crescent urbanization across the globe has widespread ecological consequences, affecting species distribution, demography and behaviour. In this study we aimed to identify, quantify, map and predict the occurrences of medium- to large-bodied (≥1 kg) mammal carnivorans across urban and peri-urban landscapes throughout Brazil. We use a news-based search to compose a dataset of occurrences across the Brazilian cities. Additionally, we gather various socio-environmental and geophysical variables from these urban areas to identify the drivers of carnivore presence across urban environments. Employing Kernel interpolation, we generate heatmaps to highlight and pinpoint regions in Brazil with the highest concentration of carnivorans species on urban areas. We also employed a Generalized Additive Models (GAM) approach to assess the predictive power of social-environmental and geophysical variables on the occurrence of carnivorans in urban landscapes of Brazil. Our findings pinpoint to an increase of potential human-wildlife conflicts likely given that the urban expansion over natural habitats had a rampant increase in the last decades. Finally, we highlight that our results can serve as a basis to improve urban planning and offer important insights into the intricate interplay of social and geophysical variables that influence the occurrences of carnivorans within urban environments in Brazil.

The study aims to reveal the relationship between the user, who has the role of "secondary gatekeeper" with social media, and online newspapers. Thus, this study provides information about the secondary gatekeeping role by helping us understand the relationship between online newspapers, social media and secondary gatekeepers. Thus, this study helps us to understand the relationship between online newspapers, social media and secondary gatekeepers and provides information about the role of secondary gatekeeping. In the study, the news published by media organizations that carry out journalistic activities on Twitter, a social media platform, and the rate and nature of the interaction given to this news by users were examined using qualitative research methods. Therefore, it includes findings that will help to determine the popularity of the news published by online newspapers on Twitter, the topics to which they direct interest, and what kind of reactions are generated by the users. The sample of the study consists of the news published on Twitter between 5-9 December 2022 by internet newspapers such as Aykırı, Ensonhaber, GZT and Pusholder, which actively publish on Twitter in Turkey. Numerical values related to the research findings are presented in frequency and percentage tables and graphs. According to the research findings, it has been determined that Twitter users influence online newspapers in the news publishing process and thus assume a secondary threshold watchdog role.

The goal of this study is to determine whether media coverage affects a species' waiting time from candidacy or proposal to inclusion on the threatened/endangered species list and, as a result, the species' prospects for long-term survival and ultimate sustainability. The timely listing of a species reduces the probability that it will go extinct while under review, speeds the development and implementation of preservation plans, and ultimately improves overall biodiversity and ecosystem robustness. While the timing dimension of the EPA's endangered/threatened species listing process has been investigated previously, this research appears to be the first to include media attention as a possible explanatory variable. Results from a Cox proportional hazards model suggest that media attention can significantly impact the time from candidacy to listing, and that both national and local articles tend to hasten the process. Coverage earlier in the process is especially impactful. Various factors, including political forces, are ultimately at play, but our results suggest that media input plays a part as well. Introduction: The World Health Organization (WHO) named anti-vaxxers as one of the top ten public health hazards in 2019. Anti-vaxxers are a health danger since they are mostly responsible for the re-emergence of deadly contagious diseases such as measles, which has increased in recent years. The media such as newspapers, are responsible for disseminating messages and public knowledge about health issues, particularly health hazards. To particularly combat anti-vaccine views online, newspaper must provide critical information, such as scientific and verifiable facts. Newspapers need to also take a clear stand against anti-vaccine sentiments. Method: A quantitative content analysis was conducted on four newspapers (Harian Metro, Berita Harian, New Straits Times, and The Star) over a three-year period beginning 1 January 2019 and ending 30 September 2021. The 43-month period offered adequate data for analysing reporting trends. Result: The findings suggested that newspapers do significantly report about the antivaxxers with 247 news were focused on them. This research explores the changes the traditional gatekeeping roles of Bangladesh social media editors have undergone. The 17 interviewed journalists also enjoyed less autonomy in moderating audience comments as they removed comments critical of the government or the ruling party to avert legal consequences. These editors even considered their jobs to be "marketing" of news, suffered volatile treatment from their colleagues in the newsroom and felt pressured by their bosses, advertisers and audiences. Layout analysis is an essential task in the Newspaper recognition system. Conventional techniques for layout analysis, such as top-down and bottom-up methodologies, are environment-specific and cannot achieve accurate results. A novel and potentially effective technique is deep learning-based detection, like the YOLO algorithm. This paper presents a layout analysis of a newspaper using the deep learning model YOLOv8. Newspaper images from different sources are collected and annotated to create the dataset. Around 600 images were collected and annotated. Then, we trained YOLOv8 based on a custom dataset of Punjabi newspapers. We have tested the performance of the trained model over various newspaper images giving a very good accuracy. We have also compared the trained model with a Faster RCNN model with a different backbone. We have even tested the model on other newspapers in other languages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mainstream media is a common source of information on mental health, and its portrayal of mental disorders can influence public perceptions and stigmatisation. Recently, autism has received increased attention in mainstream media. This scoping review aims to contribute to the existing literature on the portrayal of autism and its stigmatising effect by mapping the characteristics and range of records that describe the representation of autism in mainstream media with a focus on non-fiction media (newspapers and social media) and fiction media (movies & TV, and literature). We extracted 31 articles from PubMed and PsychInfo, as well as conducting secondary searches, covering articles published between 2010 and 2022, with a time frame of media from 1988 to 2022. Most of the articles focused on newspapers and movies & TV. Our findings suggest that while the portrayal of autism in media varies, stigmatisation is most prominent in newspapers and movies & TV, often with a negative tone and stereotypical portrayal such as savantism. One possible reason for this could be the lack of representation of experts by experience in these media outlets. In contrast, our review found that literature often has a more diverse and positive representation, and social media tends to have a more supportive tone. Our recommendation is that autistic individuals should be included in the content creation process. Furthermore, future research should focus on newer forms of media, particularly social media, where self-representation is more common, and investigate how this affects the portrayal and stigmatisation of autism. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the role of media (including cinema) on the CO2 emission levels of The United States of America (USA). Employing three co-integration methods, namely Canonical Co-Integrating Regression (CCR), Dynamic Least Squares (DOLS), and Fully Modified Least Squares (FMOLS), within the framework of Environmental Kuznet Curves (EKC) theory, we unravel the impact of media coverage on the USA's carbon footprint. Utilizing Climate Policy Uncertainty index (CPU), extracted from prominent USA newspapers as a main concern, the analysis reveals a noteworthy outcome indicating media coverage pertaining to environmental issues, pollution, and climate changes emerges as a contributing factor in the reduction of CO2 emissions. The study also uses income per capita, renewable energy consumption and foreign direct investment as additional metrics of air pollution. AbstractHomicide-suicide is a tragic event characterized by multiple fatalities within the intimate relationships, familial bonds, and community networks. Our aim was to explore the extent of coverage of homicide-suicide cases in the newspaper reports delivered in Pakistan during the COVID-19 lockdown (March–August 2020). We conducted a quantitative content analysis of news- reports obtained from eight Pakistani newspapers published in English and Urdu languages and daily reviewed by the authors. A total of 50 news-reports have been selected and analyzed, documenting 107 deaths due to homicide-suicide incidents. The majority of these cases involved male perpetrators within family settings, such as parent-child and spousal/married couples, often attributed to factors such us familial discordance and poverty. Negligibly, reasons for homicide-suicides included mental health issues of the perpetrators. Gunshot wounds emerged as the most prevalent method of homicide-suicide. Given the familial backgrounds in most of cases, it is likely that they occurred within the domestic environments. These findings may suggest the need of specific family interventions across the country in order to prevent family discordances or cope with relevant issues within the families, as both may contribute to homicidal and suicidal incidents, either independently or concurrently. The COVID-19 pandemic upended daily life and disrupted human activity in urban centers all over the world. Stay-at-home orders emptied urban spaces, removing or decreasing stressors on urban wildlife associated with human presence. Anecdotal observations of unusual urban wildlife behavior spread virally across social media, but some of these reports were proven false or fabricated. Here we examined both scientific publications and local newspapers to understand how extensively urban catastrophes are covered with respect to their effects on wildlife. We read all article titles from January 1980–June 2023 in 100 high impact journals in biology to determine if prior research exists that could inform our understanding of this phenomenon. Additionally, we used a keyword search to find scientific journal articles about wildlife responses during events in which large-scale evacuations of urban environments occurred. We found 37 scientific articles on this topic, with 13 of those published in the highest impact biology journals. The majority of publications identified (70%) were about wildlife responses to the COVID-19 public health response. Finally, we searched local newspapers in areas where hurricanes struck urban centers. We found 25 newspaper articles reporting on wildlife in relation to urban natural disasters. These were typically anecdotes, but nearly always consulted a credible, expert source. Ultimately, more research focused on urban areas before and after catastrophic or sudden changes will allow biologists to develop a baseline expectation for urban wildlife behavior in the absence of humans. Publishing is a significant part of the cultural, creative, and economic sectors. Its research, assessment, and forecasting require grounded, reliable, accurate, consistent, and comparable statistical data. Considering the lack of research in periodicals statistics and the relevance of publishing statistics, as well as the fact that in the Baltic countries, publishing statistics data are collected by institutions at the same level, the problem arises whether the national libraries' applied foundational recommendations and legal documents, as well as data collection methodology, can ensure data validity, reliability, comprehensiveness, and comparability. This article aims to examine and compare the data collection practices of periodical statistics in the Baltic States. The research object includes the legal foundation of publishing statistics in Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, as well as the 2022 publishing statistics resources and official statistics data collections. UNESCO recommendations and International Organization for Standardization standards can be considered guidelines for such data collection and accounting. The legal foundation of publishing statistics consists of legal deposit laws, which must ensure the sources of statistical data. Even though publishing statistics data are collected by national libraries and the source of statistical data in all countries is legal deposits, the statistical data collections are not identical. Countries choose which data to collect, what criteria to apply, and in what form to present them. It is important to emphasize that data on the publishing industry are not presented in statistical collections, although their collection guidelines and presentation importance are highlighted in international recommendations and normative documents. Statistical data on electronic periodicals are provided only by Estonia. National libraries in the Baltic States are official statistics compilers, so summarized publishing statistics data are provided to national statistics institutions, opening new technological possibilities for data analysis and integration of new data. The collections of statistical data on newspapers and magazines can only be compared according to a few main criteria, as countries have chosen different statistical data presentation features, the main ones being the varying categorization and periodicity characteristics of newspapers and magazines. This article examines how newspaper coverage of inequality differs in Japan and South Korea, countries with comparable levels and nature of income inequality, but whose citizens maintain different attitudes toward it. Analyzing 18,630 articles in six major newspapers from 1990 to 2021, our analysis found (1) Japanese and South Korean newspapers report surprisingly little about inequality even in a period of growing inequality; (2) while South Korean newspapers significantly increased their coverage of within-country inequality in the 2010s, such a trend is not found in Japan; (3) progressive newspapers largely drive the increase in the coverage of inequality in South Korea. We also look closely into the four major topics within inequality coverage – income, employment, generation, and gender – to elaborate on qualitative differences in the ways inequality is discussed in newspapers in both societies. Our findings suggest that there exist nationally specific patterns of inequality coverage and offer important implications for the ongoing discussion about economic inequality in East Asia, as well as the literature on subjective inequality. This research explores migrant presentation in newspaper articles containing migrant crime. Thematic content analysis is employed to examine the narratives used in generalized negative discussion of migration in 100 randomly sampled articles from 6 newspapers in Canada, the UK, and the U.S. in 2018. We uncovered 13 themes, such as failure of the state, rapists and criminals, and terrorism. The findings highlight the type and variety of generalized negative narratives found in migrant crime reporting, and suggest the ongoing presentation of these stereotypes.
