This study explores the feasibility and limitations of using Rayleigh wave (Rg) ellipticity for noise-based seismic monitoring at near-surface depths (4–70 m). We use the degree of polarization (DOP) method to extract the Rayleigh wave ellipticity from seismic noise recordings, employing normalized cross-correlation and cross-covariance coefficients to quantify ellipticity variations over time. Synthetic models and field data from three distinct case studies—Garner Valley, California; Riotinto mine, Spain; and the 2011 submarine volcanic eruption on El Hierro Island, Canary Islands—validate our approach. In these field applications, our method effectively tracks the seasonality of the shallow groundwater levels in Garner Valley, monitors pore pressure variations at the tailings dam of Riotinto mine, and detects volcanic induced changes on El Hierro, demonstrating robust performance even with variable noise sources. Our results indicate that Rayleigh wave ellipticity is a versatile tool for subsurface monitoring, capable of detecting velocity changes across a broad depth range. Our methodology represents a new independent and non-interferometric approach that enhances the detection of subsurface changes while improving resolution and exploration depth in seismic monitoring techniques. • Novel approach to monitor subsurface changes using Rayleigh wave ellipticity. • This method provides a cost-effective and efficient monitoring solution, requiring only a single seismic station. • Demonstrated potential for monitoring groundwater resources, structural stability, and volcanic induced changes. A controlled field pilot has been developed in Bozeman, Montana, USA, to study near surface CO2 transport and detection technologies. A slotted horizontal well divided into six zones was installed in the shallow subsurface. The scale and CO2 release rates were chosen to be relevant to developing monitoring strategies for geological carbon storage. The field site was characterized before injection, and CO2 transport and concentrations in saturated soil and the vadose zone were modeled. Controlled releases of CO2 from the horizontal well were performed in the summers of 2007 and 2008, and collaborators from six national labs, three universities, and the U.S. Geological Survey investigated movement of CO2 through the soil, water, plants, and air with a wide range of near surface detection techniques. An overview of these results will be presented.

The measurement of gas concentrations and fluxes in the soil and atmosphere is a powerful tool for monitoring geological carbon capture and storage (CCS) sites because the analyses are made directly in the biosphere in which we live. These methods can be used to both find and accurately quantifying leaks, and are visible and tangible data for public and ecosystem safety. To be most reliable and accurate, however, the measurements must be interpreted in the context of natural variations in gas concentration and flux. Such baseline data vary both spatially and temporally due to natural processes, and a clear understanding of their values and distributions is critical for interpreting near-surface gas monitoring techniques. The best example is CO 2 itself, as the production of this gas via soil respiration can create a wide range of concentrations and fluxes that must be separated from, and not confused with, CO 2 that may leak towards the surface from a storage reservoir. The present article summarizes baseline studies performed by the authors at various sites having different climates and geological settings from both Europe and North America, with focus given to the range of values that can result from near surface processes and how different techniques or data processing approaches can be used to help distinguish a leakage signal from an anomalous, shallow biogenic signal. Abstract: Previous simulations of the behavior of a CO2 plume from a discrete line source near the ground surface have generally assumed that the water-table, soil layering, and land surface were all horizontal. As might be expected, these conditions produce plumes with a high degree of symmetry. The three dimensional TOUGH2 simulations reported here begin to consider several complications: degree of soil heterogeneity, presence of a capillary barrier, water table depth, CO2 leakage rate, sloping topography, and regional groundwater flow (sloping water-table). The results show that the ground surface CO2 flux distribution can be significantly different due to variation in the aforementioned factors, e.g. presence of a capillary barrier. The plume affected by these factors can assume an irregular shape characterized by multiple pathways to the surface. These pathways make the detection of a CO2 leak by soil gas or surface flux measurements conditionally possible at tens of meters away from the initial leak location. Such phenomena should be considered when designing CO2 detection network design. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: A field facility has been developed to allow controlled studies of near surface CO2 transport and detection technologies. The key component of the facility is a shallow, slotted horizontal well divided into six zones. The scale and fluxes were designed to address large scale CO2 storage projects and desired retention rates for those projects. A wide variety of detection techniques were deployed by collaborators from 6 national labs, 2 universities, EPRI, and the USGS. Additionally, modeling of CO2 transport and concentrations in the saturated soil and in the vadose zone was conducted. An overview of these results will be presented. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
