ABSTRACT – This paper seeks to understand the undergoing digital transformations of the Chilean media system, based on the gaps, challenges, and opportunities that are currently facing the industrial and commercial organization of native digital media in Chile. In the Chilean case, the emergence of native digital media was developed with the new media business models in a context of a crisis of traditional modes of media financing. To study this process, we propose a descriptive-exploratory study focusing on six paradigmatic cases based on a campaign of semi-structured interviews (12) and a platform biography (6) to gather information on the structures, dynamics, and evolution of business models in the journalistic sites of these digital native media. Semi-structured interviews with founders/owners (FD) and monetization managers (MM), allow us to understand the reasons and objectives that underpin these transformations. Our sample is composed of six Chilean native digital media, which are legally registered in the relevant national information system in the Chilean public sphere (Reuters, 2022). The results of this analytical exercise show the tensions that occur in the business model’s five key dimensions: sustainability, innovation, associativity, community building, and journalistic added value. Towards the end, we list the study’s limitations and the understanding of the development of digital native media in Chile. Initially offered as a digital public sphere forum, comments sections became the preferred democratic arena for gatekeepers to encourage their readers to engage in constructive dialogue about relevant issues. However, news sites require commenters to remain civil in their interactions, which led users to seek alternative ways of commenting on the news. This article explores in-depth the contents of a sample of 98,426 user-comments collected between February–March 2019 from three major Spanish digital native newspapers: ElDiario.es, ElEspañol.com, and ElConfidencial.com. The main goals were to analyze whether comments in news outlets are deliberative, to assess the quality of the debate that takes place in them, and to describe their specific features. Discourse ethics were explored to determine the discussions’ impact, the language used, the acceptance of arguments, and the recognition and civility of participants. Findings reveal that comments sections in news outlets do not have a dialogic nature and that the debates have a low-quality profile. Nonetheless, the degree of mutual respect in interaction is acceptable, with slightly observed levels of incivility. Finally, the data suggest that the focused comments are higher on social media and that memes and emojis represent a new form of digital discourse.

From its onset on the 1990s, both digital native (with sister headings on the analog platform) as digital native news media have experienced a constant transformation process. The accelerated technological evolution linked to the changing information consumption habits of the users demanded a constant reinvention capability. Furthermore, the need for profit and the drop in advertisement sales have pushed the media to redefine their structure, content and social media presence. The Ibero-American scene has experienced a sprout of a mixture of digital native news media. They are journalistic projects, conceived from and on the Internet, which have reached considerable renown and becoming reference media on the information level. Internet prompted a reduction of the costs related to the creation of media outlets. However, the establishment of a sustainable business model is one of the main challenges. The research presented looks at the business models of Ibero-American digital native news media based on a comparative analysis of 14 case studies, alongside interviews with their founders. The findings include, among other things, a tendency for business models based on diverse and hyper-specialized content targeted at micro-audiences. This research found an interest in horizontality, participation and user engagement, and noticed the need for these media to diversify their income sources.

- Abstract
Dependence on news agencies is a fundamental issue in the media, especially in the case of native digital media. This research has proposed a quantitative analysis of the publication of content in four native media (El Confidencial, El Español, Voz Pópuli, El Diario.es) but signed by the Europa Press news agency. Quantification was applied to the total amount of content published, which was signed by Europa Press, and web traffic data. On the basis of this quantification, data visualisation was applied to extract relevant results, detecting that the general production of content fell during the month of August in the four media analysed. It has also been observed that each medium has a stable threshold of content produced by Europa Press with respect to the total production.

The authors argue the continuing importance of public service values for journalistic practice and news provision in the emerging context of networked communications. Divergent perspectives regarding the economic viability of news production in for-profit and nonprofit sectors are reviewed, in application to two categories of media organizations: legacy media and digital native media. The authors assess the contemporary situation for news firms in the USA and Europe to arrive at a general understanding. Results suggest the public service ethos in journalism is at risk. This encourages the importance of collaborative efforts on the part of policymakers, news providers, and the academic community to address a complex set of problems in news production and provision today. The article makes a case for preserving historic professional values in journalistic practice but is not focused on the narrower interests of a particular sector or institutional arrangement. The authors encourage developing a comprehensive contemporary news media system to secure ongoing innovation, enhance diversity, and advance quality. The article concludes with actionable proposals regarding media policy, operational partnerships, education, and professionalism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Disinformation constitutes a serious threat to the democratic exercise of journalism and to societies in general. While the press adheres to the recommendations and ethical codes of different organizations to protect citizens’ rights to receive truthful information, digital media offer more and more possibilities for audience participation. Pertaining to this dual reality, this research deals with the user-generated contents verification systems of the most important digital native newspapers in Spain and Portugal. For this job, those responsible for the systems within each newspaper were interviewed. The conclusions indicate that newspapers attach great importance to the involvement of audiences in news production, though they also expose the lack of verification systems for the information provided by the public. This work provides the analysis of specific cases and the perspective of professionals in the fight against disinformation. It is argued here that it is not enough for the media to adhere to external deontological guidelines, but rather that they should develop internal news verification systems to regain their credibility, as was the case, for example, during the Coronavirus pandemic (ComScore, 2020)., La desinformación constituye una seria amenaza para el ejercicio democrático del periodismo y para las sociedades en general.

- Abstract
Mass media are an element to create the reality that citizens build about politics, in particular, about political corruption. The main headlines of written press know the importance of this political content, and focus on them, both in paper and digital editions. At the same time, these traditional papers have coexisted with a new model of means of communication for years. Their only support is Internet, born under alternative business models and with an editorial line which proclaims its independence. This project analyzes the characteristics of the relationships with informative sources which both types of means of communication, in order to define the number, type and use of sources. The main objective of this research is to establish and define the possible differences in relation to sources that keep both types of media in matters related to corruptionThe study proposes a quantitative analysis of the information in El Mundo, El País, Infolibre and eldiario.es, in one of the newspapers of greater informative volume: the publication of the original “Bárcenas’ papers” and the imprisonment of the former treasurer of Partido Popular. The results indicate that there are differences in the information processing of information between digital natives and traditional media, especially in the number of sources cited, Los medios de comunicación son un elemento fundamental para configurar la realidad que los ciudadanos construyen sobre la política y, en concreto, sobre la corrupción política.

At the same time, these traditional papers have coexisted with a new model of means of communication for years. Their only support is Internet, born under alternative business models and with an editorial line which proclaims its independence and the return of the journalism of quality, thought for citizens. This project analyzes the characteristics of the informative treatment which both types of means of communication make about political corruption, from the study of the informative volume of four mass media: El Mundo and El País, as traditional media, and eldiario.es and Infolibre, as digital native media. The analysis takes the well-known “Gürtel Case” or “Bárcenas Case@ as a case of study, in order to define the number and type of sources which both kinds of media use, the position they give to corruption, the use of precedents or context in both discourses or the different focuses which both models give to the information related to corruption. The study proposes a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the information in one of the newspapers of greater informative volume: the publication of the original “Bárcenas’ papers” and the imprisonment of the former treasurer of Partido Popular. The results indicate that there are differences in the information processing of information between digital natives and traditional media, especially in the number of sources cited. Traditional media quote three sources over 65% of their information, while digital natives do it at 5% of its information.
