This article discusses the communities of support that LGBTQ people from a Muslim background in Brussels build with other racialized LGBTQ people, and the spaces of disidentification and resistance that these produce. It does so by analysing qualitative data collected over a year of ethnographic research with LGBTQ people from a Muslim background in Brussels. In particular, the article focuses on the functions that queer de color communities serve in the lives of research participants. It shows how communication in these often takes place on a non-verbal level, in contrast to a 'pressure to explain' that marks participants' interactions in other contexts, and the sense of mutual recognition, understanding and political empowerment this communication produces. The article then discusses how the co-presence of LGBTQ people from a Muslim background and their collective resignification of cultural scripts produce counterpublic spaces that have the potential to disrupt social norms and dominant imaginations of difference.

MUSLIMS , *MUSLIM women , *SOCIAL adjustment , *FAMILY relations , *RELIGIOUS communities - Abstract
The general objective of this research was to explore the psychological-relational dimension of a group of women converts to Islam in the city of Medellín (Antioquia, Colombia). As a methodology, the qualitative research paradigm was chosen, specifically the grounded theory design. A theoretical sample was applied, from which four interviews were obtained with converted Muslim women who congregate in one of the three mosques in the city of Medellin during the year 2021. The results show that Islam becomes for them a source of sense of reality and lifestyle, which largely depends on self-perception, family characteristics and dynamics, and social adjustment to the Muslim community. In addition, this allows community practices, religious commitment, and political practices to be assumed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Based on interviews conducted in Quebec with 23 people with parents of different ethnic backgrounds and one of whom is Muslim by birth, this article explores how family transmission influences identity construction. More specifically, the article deals with how these mixed individuals identify themselves through certain identity references. The analysis highlights the essential role of family transmission in how individuals define themselves while showing the latitude they enjoy. It also shows that while their identity is linked to certain cultural references, identity markers such as language, religion, or nationality are not necessarily the most important elements for them. Couple relationship standards (beliefs about what makes for a satisfying couple relationship) have not included standards held about religion, which is surprising given how important religion is in many parts of the world. In the current study, we developed the Importance of Religion in Couple Relationships Scale (IRCRS) with the aim of having a scale suitable for use across different cultural and religious groups. The IRCRS was administered to three samples: 354 Pakistani residents (178 females, 176 males) who identified as Muslim; 274 Thai residents (157 females, 117 males) who identified as Buddhist; and 165 Westerners (resident in Australia or the United States, 60 males, 105 females) who identified as either not religious (n = 74) or Christian (n = 91). We developed a 13‐item measure with a two level structure yielding an overall importance of religion score. The items in the IRCRS had acceptable cross‐cultural structural invariance in a multi‐group confirmatory factor analysis of the Pakistani Muslims, Thai Buddhists, and Westerners. Pakistani Muslims endorsed IRCRS standards most strongly, Western Christians next most strongly, Thai Buddhists next, and Westerners with no religion least strongly. There were no gender differences, and only very small differences by relationship status. The IRCRS can be used in future research to investigate the association of religious relationship standards with couple relationship satisfaction and might be a useful clinical tool to assess the importance of religion to couples. The archive of Turpan (Chinese Tulufan) in the late Qing (1877-1912) attests to unlikely stories of cultural exchange within the lowest levels of the provincial administration of Xinjiang (East Turkestan). During this period, the region of Xinjiang and its Turkic-speaking Muslim majority were integrated into China proper in a new provincial system. Archival documents from this period have been published as photoreproductions and in digital form, allowing unprecedented access to day-to-day life in this multicultural, multilingual society through records in Chinese and in Chaghatay, a Central Asian literary language. This article explores surveys of land and recently uncovered draft notebooks recording grain tax and relief activities to understand how Turpan was made knowable, and thus legible to Chinese authorities. By placing these Turkic-language records into dialogue with their published Chinese-language final versions, we can see how economic «facts» traveled through the porous membrane of translation. This article contextualizes these documents and the people and practices that produced them in order to consider why – in contrast to texts from other parts of the archive – these surveys and notebooks succeed not only in crafting the appearance of accuracy, but evidently in reflecting the socioeconomic realities on the ground. It argues that local Turkic Muslim elites embraced the land survey and grain relief systems for their ability to provide tangible benefits and to maintain their positions in society.

URBAN geography , *HALAL food , *ETHNIC foods , *MUSLIMS , *MUSLIM identity , *FOOD consumption , *MINORITIES - Abstract
This article aims to understand how Chinese Muslims negotiate their identities and how they are included and excluded in urban Guangzhou – a multicultural and multi-ethnic city in south China – through the lens of food. This empirical research consists of intersectional and interactional analysis based on narratives of both the ethnic majority and minority groups. Drawing on a qualitative analysis, this research sheds light on both Muslim geographies of encounter and geographical studies on food consumption in China's multicultural context. Focusing on daily food practices of Chinese Hui Muslims who are immigrated to Guangzhou from Islamic communities in northwest China, this research elucidates how these Muslims use food to sustain their religious identities, how they manage their food practices when eating with Han Chinese and how such daily food practices integrate them into or exclude them from the mainstream Han Chinese culture in relation to wider socio-political issues. The key argument of this research indicates that public food spaces, on the one hand, can enable the social interactions between Chinese Muslims and non-Muslims, and on the other hand, gain new meanings through the encounters of these two groups. This paper draws on an empirical study, based on interviews and observations, of youthful Pakistani Muslim women raised in Birmingham, UK, to explore transnational marriage practices and their potential for reworking sharply gendered patrilineal norms framing marriage conventions, implicating questions of identity, home and belonging. In the South Asian patrilineal system marriage signals migration for women, displacing home across the natal (maike) where they are symbolic outsiders, and the marital (sasural) home, where they are actual strangers. By contracting transnational marriage, women are able to avoid this dislocation and its disadvantages, transferred onto their overseas grooms which lays the basis for the negotiation of a more egalitarian gender dynamic. The paper explores women's narratives of transnational marriage from the arrangements through to the union and the processes of conjugal bonding and coupling constituted within the spaces of the natal home, circumscribed by the close proximity of the extended natal family. These processes involve the negotiation of differential expectations of the conjugal relationship, illuminating women's shifting aspirations for reconfiguring marital scripts characterised by more egalitarian gender relations. This is in part a reflection of the availability of new repertoires for remaking the self and women's assertion of modern, cosmopolitan, Muslim identities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper explores and compares the socio-spatial effects of Islamophobia in Paris and London. Our research focuses on different spaces and types of discrimination against Muslims or people who are perceived to be Muslim in Paris and London using primarily quantitative data. A quantitative analysis of the geographical spaces of Islamophobia is presented, while highlighting the ways in which anti-Muslim discrimination is gendered, racialized, classed and aged. We identify the different contexts in which Islamophobia takes place in each city. This spatial analysis highlights not only particular places such as public areas, transport networks or public institutions, but it also describes specific logics of spatial organisation showing the importance of the centre and the suburbs, transport axes and pockets of segregation. Using an intersectional approach, we also demonstrate that Islamophobic discrimination is often shaped simultaneously by other types of exclusions associated with gender, race, class and age. We found that victims were more likely to be young women who wear a headscarf with the perpetrators more likely to be men in the UK and both men and women in France. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ISLAMOPHOBIA , *MUSLIM Americans , *HUMAN geography , *MUSLIMS , *SENSORY perception - Abstract
Recent debates in social and cultural geography on the inclusionary/exclusionary nature of space have brought our attention to the 'everywhere different' nature of racism across cities. Among these debates have been calls to interrogate the socio-spatial dimensions of new forms of racism, like Islamophobia as they evolve. This paper draws on the findings of an online survey conducted from September 2016 to April 2017 with young Muslim American residents of the Bay Area, California. It provides empirical material on the way young Muslims map 'the geography of Islamophobia' across this region to uncover how the racialization of Muslims has translated into perceptions of racism across city spaces. The findings indicate that Islamophobia occurs in various public spheres, particularly on public transport and in airports. There is a spatial concentration of Islamophobic spaces in the Bay Area, focussed in the North and Outer-East Bay regions – relatively rural parts of the region with a less significant Muslim population. Conversely, areas with larger Muslim populations were associated with lower levels of perceived Islamophobia. This paper highlights the need for more localised, socio-spatial engagements in racism that capture the evolving nature of the American racisms, and how they are spatialised across cities.

Looking at problems raised by “political-religious opposition groups” (“sects”) in early Islam, it is seen that in the beginning there was no orthodoxy, but an Islam seeking self-definition, which continued more particularly in the first four centuries of the Moslem era. Historically, “orthodoxy” was built up over a long period, based on a certain consensus established by the foremost scholars in religious sciences, with the collaboration and sometimes against the will of the authorities. This held for Shiite and Sunni communities.

Covering 640,000 square miles, Uyghuristan is approximately the size of Iran. Located in the far west, it is Beijing's largest administrative unit encompassing one-sixth of China's territory. Due to an abundance of coal, natural gas, and oil, accounting for roughly a quarter of China's total reserves, Uyghuristan has been described as the country's "national energy strategy base." These energy resources have been indispensable to "growing" the Chinese economy and maintaining the Chinese Communist Party in power. Strategically, Uyghuristan is the vital link for the Chinese economy's increasing need for imported oil from Central Asia and, through the Pakistan pipeline corridor, the Persian Gulf. It is the key to the success of Beijing's ambitious "One Road, One Belt Initiative" to link the economies of Eurasia to China through infrastructure development. The most important strategic value of Uyghuristan, however, resides in its geography. Consisting mostly of mountains and deserts, the sheer vastness of this inhospitable land provides a natural barrier protecting "China Proper", the heavily populated lands in the east of the country lying between the Yellow River in the north and the Xi River in the south, from land invasions. For these reasons, China will not relinquish control over Uyghuristan, its resources or its people. The people are Uyghurs, a Turkic Muslim nation, who have been seeking their political independence for most of the Twentieth Century. The fall of the last imperial dynasty of China, the Qing, in 1911, was followed by the collapse of the Chinese state. In the ensuing political instability, the Uyghurs declared their independence as the East Turkestan Republic - twice. The first time was in 1933 and endured until suppressed by Nationalist Chinese forces under Chiang Kai-shek in 1934. A second East Turkestan Republic was established in 1944 and lasted until it was overthrown by Communist Chinese forces under Mao Zedong in 1949. Since the 1990s, Beijing has initiated measures to permanently secure Uyghuristan to China by colonizing the land with Chinese settlers. These policies have succeeded in reducing Uyghurs from a majority to a plurality. The objective appears to be to make Uyghurs a demographic minority in their own homeland. Chinese colonization has provoked riots by Uyghurs, ethnic clashes between Uyghurs and Chinese migrants, and repeated calls by Uyghurs for their right to self-determination. Beijing's response as reflected in its 2014 "strike hard campaign against terrorism, separatism, and religious extremism" has, itself, been extreme. In the words of a UN human rights panel, Uyghuristan now resembles a "massive internment camp that is shrouded in secrecy, a sort of 'no rights zone'...members of the Uyghur community and other Muslims were being treated as 'enemies of the state' solely on the basis of their ethno-religious identity." This article will examine these issues and the fundamental question they raise -- are Uyghurs victims of genocide as legally defined by the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide?. Apparently, there is not a clear beginning, but by making a recount of the facts is evident that there are linked constants in the Middle East wars. It has been noted an ideological struggle, combined with a struggle related to the physical space and hydrocarbons control. The problem has two arrises: the ideological hermeticism of the Muslim nations and, on the other hand, the economic and geopolitical interest of western powers embodied in the Israeli nation.

This paper presents the state-of-the-art regarding the archaeological verification of the presence of dromedaries, Camelus dromedarius L. in the south of Al-Andalus, together with new findings regarding this topic. This research also ana-lyzes several written sources, which clarify the usage given to these animals and, at the same time, offers a first symbolic meaning given to them. On the other hand, we demonstrate that most of the bone manipulations found in the bone remains from dromedaries corresponds to the manufacturing of several different bone tools. As far as the geographical distribution of these animals within the iberian peninsula and their increase or decrease in al-Andalus, we conclude that they were present during the Islamic period.
