Rhabdomyomatous mesenchymal hamartoma (RMH) is a rare congenital tumor of the dermal and subcutaneous tissues, often presenting as a papule or a pedunculated or sessile mass at the midline on the head and neck. Although RMH is benign, some cases have reported associations with other congenital and syndromic anomalies. Thus, an accurate diagnosis is important, as an internal or systemic evaluation of the patient may be warranted. We report a case of a solitary RMH on the midline upper chest in a healthy 15-year-old girl.

Primary cardiac malignancies are rare entities. Although sarcomas enclosed the main group of malignant heart neoplasms, primary cardiac leiomyosarcomas are extremely rare and constitutes less than 8% of cardiac tumors. Leiomyosarcoma usually originates from the pulmonary veins and have a worm-like shaped structure. In this article, we present a case of a 40-year-old Hispanic man diagnosed with a cardiac tumor who underwent surgical resection, during pathological examination the tissue samples were consistent with a malignancy of mesenchymal origin that contained irregular bundles of spindle cells. Subsequent immunohistochemical study categorized the mass as a primary heart leiomyosarcoma with positive smooth muscle actin and muscle specific actin. As usual in this type of malignancy, patient's clinical status declined overtime, recurrence was diagnosed two months after surgery, and four months after the procedure the patient was discharge for palliative care.

Leiomyosarcomas are rare malignant tumors of smooth muscles. Superficial leiomyosarcomas are classified into two subtypes depending on their location: cutaneous forms arise from the arrector pili muscles of hair follicles or dartos muscles of genital skin; subcutaneous forms arise from the smooth muscle lining of arterioles and veins in subcutaneous tissue. Superficial cutaneous leiomyosarcomas on the head are very rare. We report three cases of superficial cutaneous leiomyosarcoma, one localized on the face and two on the forehead.

The alveolar soft part sarcoma is rare, prefers the female sex and mostly occurs in young adults, from 15 to 35 years of age. It is exceptional in children.

A number of immunological markers and chromosomal abnormalities are described to aid in the diagnosis, prognosis and management of soft tissue sarcomas. Although the chromosomal abnormalities may be specific in some cases, they have only been reported in small series or single cases and their significance has not yet been established. None of the immunological markers described is either entirely specific or sensitive for a particular tumor type, and virtually none of these immunological reagents is currently approved for diagnostic use despite their widespread applications in pathology. They function in a supporting role to conventional tissue pathology, grading, and pathological and clinical staging of soft tissue sarcomas. Antibodies employed as an aid in diagnosis of soft tissue tumors should always be run in panels and never as single tests. New immunological markers and chromosomal abnormalities in soft tissue sarcomas should be carefully evaluated for their specificity and sensitivity and their usefulness in diagnosis and prognosis. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Leiomyoblastoma has been regarded as a neoplasm of smooth muscle origin. With recent progress in immunohistostaining techniques, many clinicopathological discrepancies have been pointed out about the origin of leiomyoblastoma. It has been claimed that gastrointestinal non-epithelial tumors should be regarded as stromal tumors in order to study their origin. In the present study, we performed various forms of immunohistostaining in seven cases of leiomyoblastoma to determine their origin. One case expressed desmine and muscle specific actin and was considered to be derived from smooth muscle. Four neoplasms expressed S-100 protein (two cases were also NSE positive) and were thought to be derived from the nerve. Two cases were of unknown derivation. These results suggest that the cells of leiomyoblastoma may arise from a primitive to totipotential cell of neural lineages that may anomalously express smooth muscle filaments.
