Search

The role of education-focused university-industry collaboration (UIC) in facilitating higher education quality has been increasingly documented by empirical studies in the last decade, and yet existing systematic reviews of UIC are all focused on other non-education related aspects of collaboration, such as joint research, technology transfer, knowledge block building, or patent issues. This systematic review fills such a research gap by synthesising extant research on educational collaboration between the industry sector and higher education sector. Following the PRISMA guidelines, the authors searched literature across multiple databases and screened publications according to the following eligibility criteria: (1) publications should be peer-reviewed journal articles; (2) the publications should involve educational collaboration between the two sectors; (3) the content should provide information on at least one of the four major aspects, namely, the manifestations of industry's involvement, the manifestations of higher education's involvement, critical determinants of successful education-focused UICs, and the challenges or barriers to the implementation. Finally, a total of 65 qualified publications from 25 countries are included, from which seven types of industrial engagement, five types of universities' engagement, five critical determinants, and four challenges to the implementation across the globe are synthesised. Background Polypharmacy among older people represents a global challenge due to its association with adverse drug events. The reported prevalence of polypharmacy varies widely across countries, and is particularly high in Asian countries. However, there is no multinational study using standardised measurements exploring variations in prescribing trends. Objective To compare polypharmacy trends in older people in Asia, Australia and the United Kingdom. Design Multinational, retrospective, time-trend, observational study using a common study protocol. Setting Outpatient and community settings. Subjects All individuals aged ≥ 65 years between 2013 and 2016. Methods We defined polypharmacy as the concomitant use of ≥5 medications for ≥45 days per year. We estimated the annual prevalence of polypharmacy and calculated average annual percentage change (AAPC) to assess the time trends. Results A total of 1.62 million individuals were included in this study. The highest prevalence of polypharmacy was observed in Hong Kong (46.4%), followed by Taiwan (38.8%), South Korea (32.0%), the United Kingdom (23.5%) and Australia (20.1%) in 2016. For the time trend, the Asian region showed a steady increase, particularly in Hong Kong and South Korea (AAPC: Hong Kong, 2.7%; South Korea, 1.8%; Taiwan, 1.0%). However, Australia and the United Kingdom showed a decreasing trend (Australia, −4.9%; the United Kingdom, −1.1%). Conclusions Polypharmacy prevalence in older people was higher in Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea, with an increasing trend over time, compared with Australia and the United Kingdom. Our findings underline the necessity to monitor polypharmacy among older people in Asia by conducting government-level interventions and introducing medicine-optimisation strategies. Aims: To understand geographical and temporal patterns in the diabetes gap, the excess mortality risk associated with type 2 diabetes (T2D), in three high‐income countries. Methods: Using databases from Canada (Ontario), Spain (Catalonia) and the UK (England), we harmonized the study design and the analytical strategy to extract information on subjects aged over 35 years with incident T2D between 1998 and 2018 matched to up to five subjects without diabetes. We used Poisson models to estimate age‐specific mortality trends by diabetes status and rate ratios and rate differences associated with T2D. Results: In more than 6 million people, 694 454 deaths occurred during a follow‐up of 52 million person‐years. Trends in all‐cause mortality rates differed between Ontario and England; yet, the diabetes gaps were very similar in recent years: in 2018, we estimated 1.3 (95% confidence interval: 0.8, 1.8) and 0.8 (0.2, 1.5) more deaths per 1000 person‐years in 50‐year‐old men with diabetes in Ontario and England, respectively, and 8.9 (6.1, 11.7) and 12.1 (9.1, 15.1) in 80‐year‐old men; between‐country differences were small also in women. In Catalonia, rate ratios comparing T2D with no diabetes in men in 2018 were 1.53 (1.11, 2.11) at 50 years old, 0.88 (0.72, 1.06) at 60 years old, 0.74 (0.60, 0.90) at 70 years old and 0.81 (0.66, 1.00) at 80 years old, indicating lower mortality rates in men with T2D from the age of 60 years; rates were similar in women with and without diabetes at all ages. The diabetes gaps in cardiorenal mortality mirrored those of all‐cause mortality: we observed consistent reductions in the proportions of cardiorenal deaths in subjects aged 80 years but variations in subjects aged ≤70 years, regardless of the presence of diabetes. Conclusions: By reducing the confounding impact of epidemiological and analytical differences, this study showed geographical similarities and differences in the diabetes gap: an excess risk of all‐cause and cardiorenal mortality in subjects with T2D is still present in Ontario and England in recent years, particularly in elderly subjects. We compared rates of childhood infectious disease hospital contacts across Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden with the overall objective to elucidate potential differences in burden of disease and in organisational and registration practices.Methods: Using national registries, we estimated incidence rates for infectious disease hospital contacts between 2008 and 2017 among children aged 0– 14 years. We investigated the rates for different types of contacts (inpatient or outpatient including emergency room), duration of admission, and by sex.Results: During the study period, the rate of all hospital contacts per 1000 person-years was highest in Sweden (125.2) followed by Finland (87.1), Denmark (79.0), and Norway (62.1). The rates aligned for inpatient contacts with overnight stays; 19.3 (Denmark), 16.6 (Finland), 16.3 (Norway), and 13.0 (Sweden); these were highest in early infancy in all countries. A peak around 1 year of age was seen in all countries except in Sweden. The rates were higher among boys compared with girls in early childhood, after 13 years of age the rates among girls surpassed the boys.Conclusion: Large cross-country differences were observed for outpatient and short-term hospital contacts for infectious diseases, affected by differences in organisational structures and coding practices across and within countries over time. Inpatient contacts requiring overnight stays reflected more comparable levels of severe infections across countries. We aim to identify the preoperative and perioperative risk factors associated with post-surgical Staphylococcus aureus prosthetic joint infections (PJI) and to develop and validate risk-scoring systems, to allow a better identification of high-risk patients for more efficient targeted interventions. We performed a multicenter matched case-control study of patients who underwent a primary hip and knee arthroplasty from 2014 to 2016. Two multivariable models by logistic regression were performed, one for the preoperative and one for perioperative variables; predictive scores also were developed and validated in an external cohort. In total, 130 cases and 386 controls were included. The variables independently associated with S. aureus -PJI in the preoperative period were (adjusted OR; 95% CI): body mass index >30 kg/m2 (3.0; 1.9 to 4.8), resident in a long-term care facility (2.8; 1.05 to 7.5), fracture as reason for arthroplasty (2.7; 1.4 to 5.03), skin disorders (2.5; 0.9 to 7.04), previous surgery in the index joint (2.4; 1.3 to 4.4), male sex (1.9; 1.2 to 2.9) and American Society of Anesthesiologists index score 3 to 4 (1.8; 1.2 to 2.9). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.73 (95% CI 0.68 to 0.78). In perioperative model, the risk factors were the previous ones plus surgical antibiotic prophylaxis administered out of the first 60 minutes before incision (5.9; 2.1 to 16.2), wound drainage for >72 hours after arthroplasty (4.5; 1.9 to 19.4) and use of metal bearing material versus ceramic (1.9; 1.1 to 3.3). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.78 (95% CI 0.72 to 0.83). The predictive scores developed were validated in the external cohort. • Consumers were divided into two groups (Food Enthusiasts and Food Conservatives). • Australians have eaten more seaweed in the past than consumers from other countries. • Food Conservatives have a lower intention to eat seaweed. Seaweed is increasingly recognised as a highly nutritious and sustainable food source. While it has a long tradition in many Asian countries, it still only plays a minor role in the Western diet. The aim of this study was to identify and describe consumer segments that are more likely to intend to consume seaweed. An online survey was conducted with 1,621 participants from three Western countries (Australia, the United Kingdom and Croatia) with different cultures, culinary traditions and levels of development in the seaweed industry. Two consumer segments were identified: Food Enthusiasts and Food Conservatives. The profiling of these segments is based on factors oriented to consumers' food innovativeness, food neophobia, food involvement, food responsibility, health consciousness, and symbolic value. The segments differ significantly in terms of food innovativeness, food neophobia, food involvement, eating and dietary style, past behaviour around seaweed consumption, future intention to eat seaweed and socio-demographic characteristics. These results provide valuable insights for the seaweed industry to develop effective marketing strategies that will meet the demands of different Western consumers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction The COVID-19 pandemic is having an unprecedented detrimental impact on mental health in people around the world. It is therefore important to examine factors that may buffer or heighten the risk of mental health problems in this context. Objectives This study explores the buffering effects of different flows of compassion (for self, for others, from others) and the magnifying effects of fears of compassion on the impact of perceived threat of COVID-19 on depression, anxiety and stress, and social safeness. Methods 4057 adult participants collected from the general community population across 21 countries from Europe, Middle East, North America, South America, Asia and Oceania, completed self-report measures of perceived threat of COVID-19, compassion, fears of compassion, depression, anxiety, stress, and social safeness. Results Self-compassion moderated the impact of perceived threat of COVID-19 on depression, anxiety and stress, whereas compassion from others moderated the effects of fears of COVID-19 on social safeness. Fears of compassion moderated the impact of perceived threat of COVID-19 on psychological distress. Only fears of compassion from others moderated the effects of fears of COVID-19 on social safeness. These effects were consistent across countries. Conclusions Our findings highlight the universal protective role of compassion, in particular self-compassion and compassion from others, in promoting resilience by buffering against the harmful effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health and social safeness. Furthermore, our results reveal that fears of compassion have a magnifying effect on the damaging impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health and social safeness. Civilian populations that are more prepared for emergencies are more resilient. Ample research has been carried out over the last three decades to identify the factors that contribute to public readiness to emergencies and disasters and enhance societal resilience. However, the analysis did not achieve an in-depth comprehension of the types of contributing factors, namely, contextual vs. target aspects. A cross-sectional study that explored attitudinal factors among civilian populations took place during the months of January–February 2021. Diverse representative samples (N ≥ 500 each) of adults from eight countries (Italy, Romania, Spain, France, Sweden, Norway, Israel, and Japan) were engaged. The primary outcomes of this study were individual and societal resilience as well as emergency preparedness. The results suggest that in most countries, levels of trust are relatively high for emergency services and health services, and relatively low for politicians. In the overall sample, the individual preparedness index, which delineates the compliance with general household adjustment recommendation for emergencies, averaged at 4.44 ± 2.05SD (out of 8). Some variability was observed between countries, with some countries (e.g., Spain, Norway, and Italy) reporting higher preparedness rates than others (e.g., Japan). In the overall sample, levels of individual resilience were mediocre. Multivariate analysis showed that the following variables are predictors of societal resilience: trust (β = 0.59), social norms and communality (β = 0.20), individual resilience (β = 0.05), individual preparedness (β = 0.04), risk awareness (β = 0.04), and age (β = 0.03). The results of this study show that there are commonalities and differences between societies across Europe and beyond concerning societal resilience at large, including preparedness, individual resilience, and risk perception. Despite socio-cultural driven differences, this study shows that societies share varied characteristics that may contribute toward a common model for assessing societal resilience and for explaining and predicting resilience and readiness.

Background: Human papillomavirus (HPV)‐driven head/neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC) prevalence varies globally. We evaluated HPV DNA and p16INK4a in formalin fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) HNSCC from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and Peru. Methods: HPV was genotyped by PCR‐hybridization. All HPV DNA positive and some HPV DNA negative cases underwent p16INK4a immunohistochemistry. Results: HPV DNA was detected in 32.8%, 11.1%, and 17.8% of oropharyngeal (OPC), oral cavity (OCC) and laryngeal (LC) cancers, respectively. OPC HPV prevalence was higher in Colombia (94.7%), and Argentina (42.6%) compared to Brazil (10.6%) and Peru (0.0%). HPV‐16 was the most detected. Other HPVs were found in LC. Higher rates of p16INK4a positivity were observed among HPV positive OPC/OCC cases compared to LC cases. Conclusions: Our results support a role for HPV‐16 in a subset of HNSCC, corroborate the heterogeneity observed in samples from different countries, and contribute additional etiological and biomarkers information in tumors of significant impact worldwide. Abstract Many universities offer Distance Education (DE) courses and programs to address the diverse educational needs of students and to stay current with advancing technology. Some Institutions of Higher Education (IHE) that do not offer DE find it difficult to navigate through the steps that are needed to provide such courses and programs. Investigating learners’ perceptions, attitudes and willingness to try DE can provide guidance and recommendations for IHEs that are considering expanding use of DE formats. A survey was distributed to undergraduate students in Portugal, UAE and Ukraine. The results of this pilot study showed that in all three countries, students’ major concerns about such programs were time management, motivation, and English language skills. Although students were somewhat apprehensive many indicated they were interested in taking DE courses. Six recommendations informed by interpretation of students’ responses and the literature, are offered to assist institutions who want to offer DE as part of their educational strategy.

Background: The COVID‐19 pandemic is a massive global health crisis with damaging consequences to mental health and social relationships. Exploring factors that may heighten or buffer the risk of mental health problems in this context is thus critical. Whilst compassion may be a protective factor, in contrast fears of compassion increase vulnerability to psychosocial distress and may amplify the impact of the pandemic on mental health. This study explores the magnifying effects of fears of compassion on the impact of perceived threat of COVID‐19 on depression, anxiety and stress, and social safeness. Methods: Adult participants from the general population (N = 4057) were recruited across 21 countries worldwide, and completed self‐report measures of perceived threat of COVID‐19, fears of compassion (for self, from others, for others), depression, anxiety, stress and social safeness. Results: Perceived threat of COVID‐19 predicted increased depression, anxiety and stress. The three flows of fears of compassion predicted higher levels of depression, anxiety and stress and lower social safeness. All fears of compassion moderated (heightened) the impact of perceived threat of COVID‐19 on psychological distress. Only fears of compassion from others moderated the effects of likelihood of contracting COVID‐19 on social safeness. These effects were consistent across all countries. Conclusions: Fears of compassion have a universal magnifying effect on the damaging impact of the COVID‐19 pandemic on mental health and social safeness. Compassion focused interventions and communications could be implemented to reduce resistances to compassion and promote mental wellbeing during and following the pandemic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose To investigate the association between use of methylphenidate and risk of myocardial infarction among Asians. Methods: We conducted a multinational self‐controlled case series study using nationwide healthcare databases of South Korea (2002–2018), Taiwan (2004–2015), and Hong Kong (2001–2016). Of patients with myocardial infarction who were also prescribed methylphenidate within the observation period, methylphenidate use was classified into four mutually exclusive periods by each person‐day: exposed (exposed to methylphenidate), pre‐exposure (prior to the first methylphenidate prescription), washout (after the end of methylphenidate treatment), and baseline (unexposed to methylphenidate). Risk of myocardial infarction among the three periods of methylphenidate use was compared to the baseline period using conditional Poisson regression analysis to estimate incidence rate ratios (IRRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: We identified 2104, 484, and 30 patients from South Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, respectively. Risk of myocardial infarction was the highest during the pre‐exposure period in all three populations: South Korea, pre‐exposure (IRR 3.17, 95% CI 3.04–3.32), exposed (1.05, 1.00–1.11), washout (1.92, 1.80–2.04); Taiwan, pre‐exposure (1.97, 1.78–2.17), exposed (0.72, 0.65–0.80), washout (0.56, 0.46–0.68); Hong Kong, pre‐exposure (18.09, 8.19–39.96), exposed (9.32, 3.44–25.28), washout (7.69, 1.72–34.41). Following stratification for age and sex, the trends remained analogous to the main findings across all three populations. Conclusions: Although a positive association between initiating methylphenidate and the onset of myocardial infarction was observed, the risk was the highest in the period before its initiation. Thus, this multinational study suggests there was no causal relationship between methylphenidate and myocardial infarction among Asians. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rationale: The Global Burden of Disease program identified smoking and ambient and household air pollution as the main drivers of death and disability from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Objectives: To estimate the attributable risk of chronic airflow obstruction (CAO), a quantifiable characteristic of COPD, due to several risk factors. Methods: The Burden of Obstructive Lung Disease study is a cross-sectional study of adults, aged ≥40, in a globally distributed sample of 41 urban and rural sites. Based on data from 28,459 participants, we estimated the prevalence of CAO, defined as a postbronchodilator FEV1-to-FVC ratio less than the lower limit of normal, and the relative risks associated with different risk factors. Local relative risks were estimated using a Bayesian hierarchical model borrowing information from across sites. From these relative risks and the prevalence of risk factors, we estimated local population attributable risks. Measurements and Main Results: The mean prevalence of CAO was 11.2% in men and 8.6% in women. The mean population attributable risk for smoking was 5.1% in men and 2.2% in women. The next most influential risk factors were poor education levels, working in a dusty job for ≥10 years, low body mass index, and a history of tuberculosis. The risk of CAO attributable to the different risk factors varied across sites. Conclusions: Although smoking remains the most important risk factor for CAO, in some areas, poor education, low body mass index, and passive smoking are of greater importance. Abstract Introduction Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and psoriasis (PsO) have a significant impact on HRQOL and work productivity loss. In patients with both PsA and PsO, the full extent of the physical and emotional burden of joint- and skin-related symptoms is less understood from the patient perspective. Methods A cross-sectional study of PsO patients with PsA from the US, France, and Germany was conducted using an online survey. Data on demographics, PsO severity by patient-reported body surface area involvement (BSA), PsA severity by RAPID3, impact of PsO and PsA using Patient Global Assessment (1–5), and novel questions exploring the emotional burden of joint/skin-related symptoms were collected. Multivariate regression analyses examined severity of joint and skin symptoms as predictors of quality of life (QoL), measured by PsAQoL, and Work Productivity and Activity Impairment (WPAI). Results Of the 439 patients, 23.9% had mild (RAPID3 of 0-2) and 76.1% had moderate–severe PsA (RAPID3 of 2.1–10), while 51% had mild and 49% had moderate–severe PsO (≥ 3 palms of the hand for BSA). Multivariate analyses showed that severity of joint symptoms was strongly associated with lower QoL (t = 13.15), followed by impact of skin symptoms (t = 5.11), and age (t = − 4.73), all p 5, indicating a moderate-to-extremely large effect of psoriasis on HRQoL. Joint severity and impact of joint symptoms were the strongest predictors of WPAI. Patients also associated skin and/or joint symptoms with a variety of emotions and QoL measures that were not captured on the validated scales (fatigue, how they think of themselves, how others thought of them, making a first impression etc.). Conclusions In this study, both skin and joint symptoms had a broad, meaningful impact on patient QoL, work productivity, daily activities, and emotional well-being. Objective: Psoriatic arthritis mutilans (PAM) is the most severe phenotype of psoriatic arthritis due to excessive bone erosion causing joint destruction and decreased functional capacity. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of comorbidities among patients with PAM and the association between comorbidities and joint involvement.Methods: A total of 66 patients aged ≥18 years from the Nordic countries with past or present psoriasis along with at least one mutilated joint were included in the present study.Results: The median number of comorbid conditions per patient was 1 [interquartile range (IQR) 0–2] and 16.7% reported three or more comorbidities. The most frequent comorbidity was hypertension (36.4%). The median number of mutilated joints per patient was 3 (IQR 1–8.3; range 1–38).Conclusion: Two thirds of the patients with PAM reported comorbid conditions and the most frequent was hypertension which affected more than a third of the patients. However, this study was unable to detect any association between comorbidities and the severity of PAM.

Background: PHACE syndrome is a rare inborn condition characterized by large facial hemangiomas and variable malformations of the arterial system, heart, central nervous system, and eyes. According to Orphanet estimates, the prevalence is <1.0 per million. Data from Europe are limited to small case series, and there are no population-based data available. Objectives: We conducted the present study to provide population-based estimates of the disease prevalence of PHACE syndrome in children in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. We compared these first systematic data on PHACE syndrome from Europe to published data from the PHACE Syndrome International Clinical Registry and Genetic Repository (USA). Clinical features in our cohort with PHACE syndrome were assessed in detail, including the need for early supportive measures. Methods: We used a population-based approach by means of a previously well-established network of child neurologists from Germany, Switzerland, and Austria ("ESNEK") to identify potential patients. The patients' guardians and child neurologists were asked to fill in questionnaires developed in collaboration with the International PHACE Registry. Results: We identified 19 patients with PHACE syndrome. Estimated prevalence rates were 6.5 per million in Switzerland, 0.59 per million in Germany, and 0.65 per million in Austria. A subset of 10 patients from Germany and Switzerland participated in our study, providing detailed clinical assessment (median age: 2.5 years; 9 females, 1 male). Cerebrovascular involvement was frequent (80%). Facial hemangioma extent correlated significantly with the number of organs involved (p = 0.011). In 9 out of 10 patients, facial hemangiomas were treated successfully with oral propranolol. Baseline demographic data as well as the rate of cerebrovascular and cardiovascular anomalies were in line with those from the US International PHACE Registry and other published PHACE cohorts. Conclusions: Our study provides population-based estimates for PHACE syndrome in 3 German-speaking countries. The data from Switzerland indicate that PHACE syndrome may be more prevalent than demonstrated by previous reports. Underreporting of PHACE syndrome in Germany and Austria likely accounts for the differences in prevalence rates. Many universities offer Distance Education (DE) courses and programs to address the diverse educational needs of students and to stay current with advancing technology. Some Institutions of Higher Education (IHE) that do not offer DE find it difficult to navigate through the steps that are needed to provide such courses and programs. Investigating learners' perceptions, attitudes and willingness to try DE can provide guidance and recommendations for IHEs that are considering expanding use of DE formats. A survey was distributed to undergraduate students in Portugal, UAE and Ukraine. The results of this pilot study showed that in all three countries, students' major concerns about such programs were time management, motivation, and English language skills. Although students were somewhat apprehensive many indicated they were interested in taking DE courses. Six recommendations informed by interpretation of students' responses and the literature, are offered to assist institutions who want to offer DE as part of their educational strategy. Background: We examined the fast food consumption-suicide attempt relationship among 105,061 adolescents aged 12-15 years from 32 countries.Methods: This study was based on cross-sectional data from the Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS), and included 4 low-income, 13 lower middle-income, 9 upper middle-income, and 6 high-income countries. Data on past 7-day fast food consumption and 12-month suicide attempts were collected. The association between fast food consumption and suicide attempts was investigated with multivariable logistic regression and meta-analysis while adjusting for sex, age, food insecurity (proxy of socioeconomic status), alcohol consumption, smoking, physical activity, obesity, carbonated soft drink consumption, and fruit and vegetable consumption.Results: Overall, the prevalence of fast food consumption was high (53.5%) and the proportion of suicide attempts was higher among consumers of fast food compared to non-consumers (11.8% vs. 8.3%). Of the 32 countries included in the study, a positive association between fast food consumption and suicide attempts was found in 26 countries although this was not statistically significant in all countries. The pooled OR (95% CI) based on a meta-analysis was 1.31 (1.17-1.46).Limitations: Since this was a cross-sectional study, it is not possible to draw any conclusions about causality or temporality in the associations assessed.Conclusions: Fast food consumption is positively associated with suicide attempts in adolescents. Introduction: Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and psoriasis (PsO) have a significant impact on HRQOL and work productivity loss. In patients with both PsA and PsO, the full extent of the physical and emotional burden of joint- and skin-related symptoms is less understood from the patient perspective.Methods: A cross-sectional study of PsO patients with PsA from the US, France, and Germany was conducted using an online survey. Data on demographics, PsO severity by patient-reported body surface area involvement (BSA), PsA severity by RAPID3, impact of PsO and PsA using Patient Global Assessment (1-5), and novel questions exploring the emotional burden of joint/skin-related symptoms were collected. Multivariate regression analyses examined severity of joint and skin symptoms as predictors of quality of life (QoL), measured by PsAQoL, and Work Productivity and Activity Impairment (WPAI).Results: Of the 439 patients, 23.9% had mild (RAPID3 of 0-2) and 76.1% had moderate-severe PsA (RAPID3 of 2.1-10), while 51% had mild and 49% had moderate-severe PsO (≥ 3 palms of the hand for BSA). Multivariate analyses showed that severity of joint symptoms was strongly associated with lower QoL (t = 13.15), followed by impact of skin symptoms (t = 5.11), and age (t = − 4.73), all p < 0.0001. About 57% of all patients reported a DLQI > 5, indicating a moderate-to-extremely large effect of psoriasis on HRQoL. Joint severity and impact of joint symptoms were the strongest predictors of WPAI. Patients also associated skin and/or joint symptoms with a variety of emotions and QoL measures that were not captured on the validated scales (fatigue, how they think of themselves, how others thought of them, making a first impression etc.).Conclusions: In this study, both skin and joint symptoms had a broad, meaningful impact on patient QoL, work productivity, daily activities, and emotional well-being. A survey was undertaken to determine the number of centers in Canada with an active involvement in extraoral osseointegration. It was found that six centers had placed 222 implants in 91 patients in Canada. The individual implant success rates for the Canadian experience were compared with the published Swedish and United States' experience. The Canadian experience is combined with the Swedish and United States' experience to provide retrospective multinational multicenter data. The data given should be viewed as providing trends only and not as definitive expectations of predictable success rates. The success rates are considered likely to change with time as the number of patients treated increases and the duration of follow-up is extended. The mastoid region in nonradiated patients is considered to provide a high degree of predictable individual implant success. The success rates in radiated patients yield far lower success rates, which vary with anatomic location. Objectives. To investigate the relationship between country of residence and fatigue in RA, and to explore which country characteristics are related to fatigue. Methods. Data from the multinational COMORA study were analysed. Contribution of country of residence to level of fatigue [0-10 on visual analogue scale (VAS)] and presence of severe fatigue (VAS ≥ 5) was explored in multivariable linear or logistic regression models including first socio-demographics and objective disease outcomes (M1), and then also subjective outcomes (M2). Next, country of residence was replaced by country characteristics: gross domestic product (GDP), human development index (HDI), latitude (as indicator of climate), language and income inequality index (gini-index). Model fit (R²) for linear models was compared. Results. A total of 3920 patients from 17 countries were included, mean age 56 years (S.D. 13), 82% females. Mean fatigue across countries ranged from 1.86 (S.D. 2.46) to 4.99 (S.D. 2.64) and proportion of severe fatigue from 14% (Venezuela) to 65% (Egypt). Objective disease outcomes did not explain much of the variation in fatigue (M1² = 0.12), while subjective outcomes had a strong negative impact and partly explained the variation in fatigue (RM2² = 0.27). Country of residence had a significant additional effect (increasing model fit to RM1² = 0.20 and RM2² = 0.36, respectively). Remarkably, higher GDP and better HDI were associated with higher fatigue, and explained a large part of the country effect. Logistic regression confirmed the limited contribution of objective outcomes and the relevant contribution of country of residence. Conclusion. During large-scale disasters, social support, caring behaviours, and compassion are shown to protect against poor mental health outcomes. This multi-national study aimed to assess the fluctuations in compassion over time during the COVID-19 pandemic. Respondents (Time 1 n = 4156, Time 2 n = 980, Time 3 n = 825) from 23 countries completed online self-report questionnaires measuring the flows of compassion (i.e., Compassionate Engagement and Action Scales) and fears of compassion toward self and others and from others (i.e., Fears of Compassion Scales) and mental health at three time-points during a 10-month period. The results for the flows of compassion showed that self-compassion increased at Time 3. Compassion for others increased at Time 2 and 3 for the general population, but in contrast, it decreased in health professionals, possibly linked to burnout. Compassion from others did not change in Time 2, but it did increase significantly in Time 3. For fears of compassion, fears of self-compassion reduced over time, fears of compassion for others showed more variation, reducing for the general public but increasing for health professionals, whilst fears of compassion from others did not change over time. Health professionals, those with compassion training, older adults, and women showed greater flows of compassion and lower fears of compassion compared with the general population, those without compassion training, younger adults, and men. These findings highlight that, in a period of shared suffering, people from multiple countries and nationalities show a cumulative improvement in compassion and reduction in fears of compassion, suggesting that, when there is intense suffering, people become more compassionate to self and others and less afraid of, and resistant to, compassion.

Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease of the central nervous system, often resulting in significant neurological disability. The causes of MS are not known; however, the incidence of MS is increasing, thereby suggesting that changes in lifestyle and/or environmental factors may be responsible. On this background, the Environmental Risk Factors in MS Study or EnvIMS study was designed to further explore the etiology of MS. The design and methodology are described, providing details to enable investigators to (i) use our experiences to design their own studies; (ii) take advantage of, and build on the methodological work completed for, the EnvIMS study; (iii) become aware of this data source that is available for use by the research community. Methods: EnvIMS is a multinational case-control study, enrolling 2,800 cases with MS and 5,012 population-based controls in Canada, Italy, Norway, Serbia and Sweden. The study was designed to investigate the most commonly implicated risk factors for MS etiology using a self-report questionnaire. There is significant variation in prescriptions among countries in clinical practice for the treatment of comorbidities associated with autism spectrum disorder ( ASD). It has been suggested that many people with mental health disorders in low-/middle-income countries do not receive adequate treatment. Hence, this study investigated psychopharmacological treatment patterns for ASD comorbidities in 30 countries and the association between country's income and prescription rates. The IMS Prescribing Insights database was used to investigate prescription patterns for ASD comorbidity treatment from 2007 to 2012. Data were obtained from 30 countries in continents of Europe, Asia, Oceania, Central America, South America, and Africa. The gross domestic product ( GDP) per capita was used as a proxy for each country's income. Spearman correlation was used to examine the association between prescription rate and GDP per capita. The highest prescription rates were found in Western Europe (3.89-36.36/10,000) while the lowest prescription rates were found in Asian countries, such as Turkey, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan (0.04-0.82/10,000). The most commonly prescribed drug for ASD comorbidity treatment in most of the countries was risperidone, but antidepressants and antiepileptic drugs were also frequently prescribed. There was a significant positive correlation between GDP per capita and prescription rate ( Spearman ρ = 0.60; P = 0.0011; 95% confidence interval 0.27-0.81), that is, the higher the GDP per capita, the higher the prescription rate. There are marked international differences in prescription rates, and this is partially accounted by economic factors. Future research should combine more data for ASD comorbidity treatment to explore the disparity of psychopharmacological treatment between countries. Abstract: Objectives: To compare the prevalence of elder abuse using a multilevel approach that takes into account the characteristics of participants as well as socioeconomic indicators at city and country level. Methods: In 2009, the project on abuse of elderly in Europe (ABUEL) was conducted in seven cities (Stuttgart, Germany; Ancona, Italy; Kaunas, Lithuania, Stockholm, Sweden; Porto, Portugal; Granada, Spain; Athens, Greece) comprising 4467 individuals aged 60–84years. We used a 3-level hierarchical structure of data: 1) characteristics of participants; 2) mean of tertiary education of each city; and 3) country inequality indicator (Gini coefficient). Multilevel logistic regression was used and proportional changes in Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) were inspected to assert explained variance between models. Results: The prevalence of elder abuse showed large variations across sites. Adding tertiary education to the regression model reduced the country level variance for psychological abuse (ICC=3.4%), with no significant decrease in the explained variance for the other types of abuse. When the Gini coefficient was considered, the highest drop in ICC was observed for financial abuse (from 9.5% to 4.3%). Conclusion: There is a societal and community level dimension that adds information to individual variability in explaining country differences in elder abuse, highlighting underlying socioeconomic inequalities leading to such behavior. This study analysed differences in financial literacy across four countries: Canada, Italy, the UK and the US. The purpose was to understand whether factors associated with financial literacy in one country can be generalized to other countries as well or whether unique national characteristics make it necessary to examine financial literacy in each country individually. A financial literacy index, based on the number of correct answers to four multiple-choice questions, was used to test the relevance of country of origin to financial literacy. Results suggest significant differences among countries indicating that there are national and cultural differences in what households know and need to know about their personal finances. Background/Aims: This study investigates the symptoms and the impact of symptoms on health-related quality of life (HRQL) in patients consulting with dyspepsia. Methods: Consecutive patients with a diagnosis of dyspepsia were recruited from primary and secondary care in Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland, South Africa and Spain. Investigators assessed symptom frequency and severity, and subjects completed the following questionnaires: the Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale (GSRS), the Quality of Life in Reflux and Dyspepsia (QOLRAD) questionnaire, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression (HAD) scale and the Short Form 36 (SF-36). Results: 853 dyspepsia patients were included. Mean GSRS scores showed that patients were most troubled by abdominal pain and indigestion. QOLRAD scores indicated that symptoms caused emotional distress, food/drink problems and reduced vitality, with a lesser effect on sleep and physical functioning. Mean SF-36 scores were lower than mean normative values for all domains, indicating that patients had a worse HRQL than the normal population, particularly for Bodily Pain, Role Physical and Role Emotional. Of patients in each country, 18–43% were anxious and 11–21% were depressed. Conclusions: Patients with dyspepsia have reduced HRQL because their symptoms – particularly abdominal pain and indigestion – cause emotional distress, problems with food and drink, and impaired vitality. Aims: The incidence of retinal, renal and cardiovascular complications and their relation to baseline risk factors was documented in this follow-up study of 10 of the 14 original centres of the WHO Multinational Study of Vascular Disease in Diabetes (WHO MSVDD). Methods: The incidence of specified items of vascular disease and some associated risk factors was ascertained after 7 to 9 years (11–12 years in Oklahoma, USA) follow-up, re-using baseline examination methodology in 3165 patients (66.9 %) and, through secondary information in 717 (15.2 %) of the 4729 original patients, of whom 540 (11.4 %) had died and 307 (6.5 %) were untraceable. Results: During follow-up, approximately one third of the patients developed hypertension and one third started insulin. Coronary heart disease incidence varied 10 to 20-fold among centres as did limb amputation rates. Inter-centre differences in incident retinopathy and severe visual impairment were smaller but incident clinical proteinuria and renal failure varied markedly. Vascular disease incidence of all categories was high in Native Americans though coronary heart disease incidence was relatively low in Pima Indians and absolutely low in Hong Kong and Tokyo patients. Specific vascular events and their relation with baseline risk factors are analysed in accompanying papers, summarised in the Epilogue. Conclusion/interpretation: These 10 centres reported very different incidence rates of vascular complications. Observer variation, selection biases and competing causes of mortality contributed to these differences but their validity is supported by the more objective outcome indicators. The following papers also suggest that baseline factors such as raised arterial pressure, cholesterol and fasting glucose (in the centres where it was measured) were important and potentially reversible predictors of risk. Aim/hypothesis: We aimed to determine variations in the prevalence of increased urinary albumin excretion, associated risk factors and complications in patients with diabetes participating in the WHO Multinational Study of Vascular Disease in Diabetes follow-up. Methods: Urinary albumin to urinary creatinine ratios were measured centrally in 2033 of the 2550 (79.7 %) re-examined patients from eight centres in seven countries and the frequency of microalbuminuria and macroalbuminuria and their associations with risk factors and complications were examined. Results: Macroalbuminuria prevalence (overall 15.6 %) varied tenfold (3–37 %) among centres, was higher in American Indian and Asian centres and not clearly related to type of diabetes. Microalbuminuria (overall 19.7 %) varied less (12–31 %). Increased albumin excretion was related overall to baseline fasting plasma glucose in the pooled group in whom it was measured and to increased arterial pressure, insulin use, coronary heart disease, lower extremity amputation, retinopathy and stroke in most centres. Conclusion/interpretation: Centres varied widely in the prevalence of increased albumin excretion but associations with risk factors and vascular complications were generally similar in most centres and in both major types of diabetes with ethnic and genetic differences probably contributing. Aims/hypothesis: We aimed to estimate incidences of any retinopathy and proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) by direct ophthalmoscopy and relate them to baseline risk factors in re-examined diabetic survivors from 10 centres of the WHO Multinational Study of Vascular Disease in Diabetes. Methods: After a mean follow-up of 8.4 years (11.7 years in Oklahoma), 2877 (71.6 %) survivors were resubmitted to standardised direct ophthalmoscopy as at baseline. The presence of any retinopathy and PDR were recorded at each centre and their incidence estimated in those without retinopathy and PDR at baseline. The independent associations of these incidences with baseline risk factors are expressed as odds ratios derived from multiple logistic regression analyses, within individual centres (which included fasting plasma glucose in 8 and triglyceride in 5) and in pooled data. Results: Of the 4662 original patients, 465 (10.4 %) of those without and 77 (43.0 %) of those with baseline PDR had died (p < 0.001). Any retinopathy was newly reported at follow-up in 47.7 % and PDR in 9.7 % of those free of them at baseline, with reported incidences varying substantially among centres. Incident retinopathy appeared earlier in the known course of diabetes but incidence rates rose more slowly with duration in patients with Type II (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus than in those with Type I (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus. In pooled data and in some individual centres, any retinopathy incidence gave significantly positive odds ratios with age, diabetes duration, systolic pressure, plasma cholesterol, BMI, insulin treatment and proteinuria, and with fasting plasma glucose in the centres where it was measured. Positive odds ratios for PDR were similarly obtained for age, duration, insulin treatment, cholesterol, proteinuria and fasting glycaemia. Smoking status odds ratios were negative for both outcomes. Conclusion/interpretation: Incidence of ophthalmoscopically ascertained any retinopathy varied about twofold and of PDR about threefold among centres. Although, in part attributable to differences between observers, variation in incidence in all centres and in some cases within centres was associated with a number of baseline risk factors. Such associations are not likely due to observer variation or selection biases and emerged despite the imprecision of clinical ophthalmoscopy. Aims/hypothesis: Rates of vascular complications of diabetes in a cohort of mainland Chinese patients with diabetes, ascertained and examined by similar methodology, are compared with those of the WHO Multinational Study of Vascular Disease in Diabetes (WHO MSVDD). Methods: The standardised procedures carried out in the WHO MSVDD were followed in assembling and examining a Chinese cohort of 447 diabetic patients recruited in Beijing and Tianjin [2]. Results: Compared with the WHO MSVDD centres, the Chinese cohort was slightly older, had a shorter duration of known diabetes and had fewer insulin-treated patients. Arterial pressure, total blood cholesterol and body mass index were substantially lower. Large vessel disease rate for age, sex and duration adjusted data (17.9 %) was about half that of the combined WHO MSVDD centres (33.5 % p < 0.001). However, retinopathy (47.4 % vs 35.8 % p < 0.001) and proteinuria (57.1 vs 24.9 % p < 0.001) rates were significantly higher. Conclusion/interpretation: Relatively low arterial pressures and blood cholesterol are likely contributors to the notably low arterial disease rates in this Chinese diabetic cohort; they reflect low rates in the Chinese mainland general population and resemble the Tokyo and Hong Kong centres of the WHO MSVDD. The high rates of retinopathy and proteinuria could relate to later diagnosis, degree of hyperglycaemia and/or increased susceptibiltiy to microangiopathy. Aims/hypothesis: Incidence of severe visual impairment and the ultimate prevalence of all grades of impairment were estimated in the 10 centres of the WHO Multinational Study of Vascular Disease in Diabetes (WHO MSVDD) participating in the follow-up. Methods: Visual function was ascertained at follow-up in 2994 (77.9 %) of the 3845 eligible participating survivors of the 4709 originally recruited for the WHO MSVDD using the same baseline enquiry method. The associations between incident severe visual impairment, follow-up prevalence of all grades of impairment and baseline risk factors were examined by univariate and stepwise multiple logistic regression analysis. Results: Overall, 8.4 year incidence of severe visual impairment was 1.94 % and showed statistically significant univariate correlations with age at diagnosis, diabetes duration, systolic blood pressure, fasting blood glucose and cholesterol, insulin treatment and strongly with baseline retinopathy. Baseline retinopathy, systolic pressure and cholesterol were statistically significant in multivariable analysis. Differences between centres (0.3 % to 3.45 %) were not significant. Ultimate prevalence of all grades of impairment differed between centres and within almost all of them was correlated in multivariable analysis with baseline retinopathy and proteinuria. Conclusion/interpretation: Comparisons of incident severe visual impairment between centres are restricted by selective mortality, low incidence rates and relatively small numbers in each centre but before retinopathy, baseline systolic pressure and cholesterol predicted severe visual impairment. Follow-up prevalence of all degrees of impairment varied among centres and were associated with prior retinopathy and renal disease at baseline. Civilian populations that are more prepared for emergencies are more resilient. Ample research has been carried out over the last three decades to identify the factors that contribute to public readiness to emergencies and disasters and enhance societal resilience. However, the analysis did not achieve an in-depth comprehension of the types of contributing factors, namely, contextual vs. target aspects. A cross-sectional study that explored attitudinal factors among civilian populations took place during the months of January-February 2021. Diverse representative samples ( N ≥ 500 each) of adults from eight countries (Italy, Romania, Spain, France, Sweden, Norway, Israel, and Japan) were engaged. The primary outcomes of this study were individual and societal resilience as well as emergency preparedness. The results suggest that in most countries, levels of trust are relatively high for emergency services and health services, and relatively low for politicians. In the overall sample, the individual preparedness index, which delineates the compliance with general household adjustment recommendation for emergencies, averaged at 4.44 ± 2.05SD (out of 8). Some variability was observed between countries, with some countries (e.g., Spain, Norway, and Italy) reporting higher preparedness rates than others (e.g., Japan). In the overall sample, levels of individual resilience were mediocre. Multivariate analysis showed that the following variables are predictors of societal resilience: trust (β = 0.59), social norms and communality (β = 0.20), individual resilience (β = 0.05), individual preparedness (β = 0.04), risk awareness (β = 0.04), and age (β = 0.03). The results of this study show that there are commonalities and differences between societies across Europe and beyond concerning societal resilience at large, including preparedness, individual resilience, and risk perception.
