Abstract Prehistoric rock carvings are one of Scotland’s most enigmatic and poorly understood monument types. This article discusses the pioneering approach used by Scotland’s Rock Art Project to enhance understanding of the abstract motifs through multiscalar computational analyses of a large dataset co-produced with community teams. The approach can be applied to suitable rock art datasets from other parts of the world and has international relevance for rock art reserach. Our analysis incorporates data from across Scotland in order to investigate inter-regional differences and similarities in the nature and contexts of the carvings. Innovative application of complementary analytical methods identified subtle regional variations in the character of the rock art and motif types. This variability suggest an understanding of the rock art tradition that was widely shared but locally adapted, and reflects connections and knowledge exchange between specific regions.

Paul's image of the church as the "body" of Christ in 1 Cor 12:12-26 has been traced back to a wide variety of social and religious contexts, including Gnosticism, the Jewish Scriptures, Second Temple Jewish thought, rabbinic Judaism, the Christian Eucharistic tradition, Paul's "conversion" experience, the teachings of Jesus, Stoicism, and more. Most recently, interpreters have emphasized the similarities between 1 Cor 12 and homonoia speeches associated with political rhetoric. Focusing on the closest parallels to Paul's text (one passage found in Dionysius of Halicarnassus, and another found in the fragments of Hierocles the Stoic), I intend in this article to begin developing a theoretical framework within which to interpret the significance of these parallels to Paul's meaning. The article aims to counteract recent (over)emphasis on ancient cultural commonplaces as a precise matrix for interpreting Pauline parallels and challenges the attending tendency to drown out particularities in the "sea of generalities," in preference of an explanatory model grounded more firmly in philosophical hermeneutics, the philosophy of language, and established principles in general and cognitive linguistics. The argument emphasizes the inherently "heteroglossic" (manyvoiced) nature of any and all discourse, while at the same time emphasizing both the presence of "dominant" voices or echoes, made audible through historical context and linguistic "register," and the inevitable transformation of language enacted in every new utterance, owing to the fundamentally dialogic and historically contingent nature of language and meaning. Thus, the meaning of Paul's "body" discourse emerges in a tension between a (primarily) Stoic field of reference and novel utterance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims: Sixty-one healthy, sedentary, moderately overweight young men participated in a randomised controlled trial to examine the effects of two different doses of endurance exercise on health behaviour and exercise compliance. Methods: Participants were randomised to a sedentary control group, a moderate (MOD; 300 kcal/day) or a high-dose (HIGH; 600 kcal/day) endurance exercise group for 12 weeks. A sub-set of the subjects were interviewed using pre-determined, qualitative questions to elucidate physical activity and health behaviour. In combination with the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), a post hoc thematic analysis was conducted to connect qualitative and quantitative data in a joint analysis. Results: Of the subjects interviewed, exercise compliance expressed as 95% CI was [96.8; 103%] in the MOD group and [82.9; 99.6%] in the HIGH group. The different doses of daily exercise equally improved various metabolic health parameters. The MOD group was untroubled by the exercise load and had a positive attitude towards exercise. The HIGH group expressed increased fatigue, less positivity and perceived exercise as time-consuming. The MOD group described themselves as more energetic, and thereby may have increased physical activity levels in areas of their everyday lives that were not related to the intervention. Conclusions: A multidisciplinary approach provided explanations for similar effects of two different doses of exercise. This could not have been determined via either qualitative or quantitative methodology alone. The preconditions of the TBP were fulfilled, and it represents a methodological model to explain the high degree of compliance and motivation to exercise. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

A significant challenge in the assessment of forest management outcomes is the limited ability to compare forest conditions quantitatively across ecological zones. We propose an approach for comparing different forest types through the use of reference forests. We tested our idea by drawing a sample of 42 forests from the Midwest USA, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Brazil, Bolivia, Uganda, and Nepal. We grouped these forests by shared characteristics and selected a reference forest to serve as a baseline for each forest type. We developed an index of disturbances using ratios of several forest measurements to assess differences between each study forest and its reference forest. None of the study forests was known to have been impacted by major natural disturbances during the past 50 years. Therefore, the disturbances in these forests appear to be largely related to human activities. The forests most similar to their reference forests have had limited human interventions. Our results indicate the potential of this approach to compare different forest conditions across biomes. We argue that development of this approach could facilitate analyses of forest management institutions, promote reliable indicators to compare management outcomes, and contribute to improved policies for conservation.
