We studied the possibility of using BSA-coated magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles for magnetic resonance imaging diagnosis of C6 glioblastoma, 4T1 mammary adenocarcinoma, and RS-1 hepatic mucous carcinoma. In all three cases, magnetic nanoparticles accumulated in the tumor and its large vessels. Magnetic resonance imaging with contrast agent allows visualization of the tumor tissue and its vascularization.

Ovarian cancer is one of the most common gynecologic malignancies. Accurate classification of ovarian cancer types (serous carcinoma, mucous carcinoma, endometrioid carcinoma, transparent cell carcinoma) is an essential part in the different diagnosis. Computer-aided diagnosis (CADx) can provide useful advice for pathologists to determine the diagnosis correctly. In our study, we employed a Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DCNN) based on AlexNet to automatically classify the different types of ovarian cancers from cytological images. The DCNN consists of five convolutional layers, three max pooling layers, and two full reconnect layers. Then we trained the model by two group input data separately, one was original image data and the other one was augmented image data including image enhancement and image rotation. The testing results are obtained by the method of 10-fold cross-validation, showing that the accuracy of classification models has been improved from 72.76 to 78.20% by using augmented images as training data. The developed scheme was useful for classifying ovarian cancers from cytological images.

Clinically, it is often difficult to distinguish between a mucous carcinoma and a benign lesion of the breast. We have performed cytologic examinations of 6 cases of mucous carcinoma by aspiration cytology and of 2 cases by the use of nipple secretion (Both materials were used in one case)Six out of 7 cases were cytologically positive, that is, cytologic examination was helpful in diagnosing these tumors.All 7 cases were resected and histologically confirmed as mucous carcinoma. Among them, 4 cases were pure mucous carcinoma and those remaining were mixed with other types of carcinoma.As the result of observation of cellular features of cytologic materials of these tumors, tumor cells most often appeared in solid clusters with clear evidence of distinct cell boundaries. The cytoplasm of tumor cells was abundant, anisokaryosis was slight, nuclei were usually small (8-10μ) and nuclear atypia was slight. A lesser degree of cellular atypism was generally found in pure mucous carcinoma compared with the mixed group.The periodic-acid-Schiff reaction was performed by the use of cytologic material of 4 out of 7 cases. The cytologic picture of tumor cells surrounded by amorphous mucin was characteristic in 3 cases. Futhermore, signet-ring type cells with PAS-positive substances were rarely observed.

An in vitro soft agar culture system was utilized to evaluate the colony growth of cells from primary breast carcinoma. A total of 53 specimens from fifty-three patients were placed in culture. Of these, 29 samples (55 per cent) formed at least 30 colonies per 500,000 cells plated. In relation to histologic type of tumor and clinical status of the disease, 4 of 4 samples from mucous carcinoma grew into colonies and, then, t-categories, i.e. histological extent of primary tumor, and colony growth showed an inverse correlation. Estrogen receptor status did not appear to influence growth of the colonies. The in vitro sensitivity studies to adriamycin showed a dose dependent increase in lethality. However, the in vitro response rate was relatively low. This assay system can be used to study the biology and clinical approaches to treatment of breast carcinoma.

Bronchiolar carcinoma is a recognized clinical and pathologic entity. The radiologic findings are not specific, but permit the consideration of the diagnosis in many cases. While it is undoubtedly true that the x-ray appearance is extremely varied, the findings are completely understandable if they are classified according to the stage of development of the tumor. In its behavior, location, and relatively benign histology, bronchiolar carcinoma is quite different from bronchogenic carcinoma. The authors are reporting 16 cases (Table I) to illustrate the various features of the condition. Cases of intrinsic bronchogenic carcinoma or with primary adenocarcinoma elsewhere in the body have been excluded. Synonyms: The most common synonyms for bronchiolar carcinoma are: alveolar-cell carcinoma, pulmonary adenomatosis, papillary adenocarcinoma, and mucous carcinoma. This case of mucous cancer of the appendix, with gelatinous spreading peritonitis, is of primary interest, since a search of the literature revealed very few cases with similar pathologic changes. Schena1reported the case of a man, aged 52, operated on in December, 1928, because of symptoms and signs pointing to involvement of the appendix. Operation revealed a mucous carcinoma of the appendix with gelatinous peritonitis. Appendectomy was performed. Two and a half years later the patient was again operated on for ulcerative carcinoma of the rectum. At this time only slight evidence of the former lesion remained in the pelvis.
