The term psychopathy refers to a personality disorder associated with callous personality traits and antisocial behaviors. Throughout its research history, psychopathy has frequently been described as a peculiar form of moral blindness, engendering a narrative about a patient stereotype incapable of taking a genuine moral perspective, similar to a blind person who is deprived of proper visual perceptions. However, recent empirical research has shown that clinically diagnosed psychopaths are morally more fit than initially thought, and the blindness-analogy now comes across as largely misleading. In this contribution, the moral-blindness analogy is explored in an attempt to qualify anew its relevance in psychopathy theory and research. It is demonstrated that there are indeed theoretically relevant parallels to be drawn between blindness and psychopathy, parallels that are especially illuminating when accounting for the potential symptomatology, dimensionality, and etiological nature of the disorder. Air pollution causes millions of deaths globally every year. The cause is largely, but not solely, from fossil fuel combustion in the electricity generation and transport sectors as well as various agricultural and waste management practices. This pollution in the form of ground level ozone, particulate matter and acidic gases such as nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide causes respiratory, cardiovascular and neurological problems in humans. These health concerns tend to have a greater impact on more vulnerable sectors of societies, including street vendors, agricultural workers and school children. There is a growing body of evidence that the pollution has equally devastating impacts on other organisms including plants, which may harm whole ecosystems. As humans are integral to rather than independent of nature, then this will have further reciprocal effects on us. A survey of people in rural central Thailand indicates that people are largely unaware of the main causes of and, to some extent ambivalent of, the risks associated with air pollution. An absence of policy to address this through mechanisms such as taxation akin to tobacco, alcohol or the UK 2017 sugar tax and compulsory environmental education programmes could be viewed as evidence of moral blindness. In light of some events of the Covid-19 pandemic, the importance of developing united policies to cope with worldwide air pollution is never been more apparent. There is good news in that data on local air quality is becoming increasing available in user friendly apps, which creates an opportunity to develop participatory education programmes that could emphasise personal responsibility, to address both the twin pandemics of air pollution and environmental moral blindness. Despite its oft-noted ambiguities, critical reception of Ridley Scott's Blade Runner (Theatrical Cuts (1982); Director's Cut (1992); Final Cut (2007)) has tended to converge upon seeing it as a futuristic sci-fi film noir whose central concern is what it means to be human, a question that is fraught given the increasingly human-like replicants designed and manufactured by the Tyrell Corporation for human use on off-world colonies. Within the terms of this way of seeing things a great deal of discussion has been devoted to putative criteria of being human and the question whether the once-retired blade runner, Rick Deckard, is or is not a replicant. I aim to explore a radically different course of interpretation, which sees the film in fundamentally moral and religious terms. Put in the starkest light, the film is not about what makes us human but whether we can be saved from ourselves, from our terrifying inhumanity, our moral blindness.

The corruption scandals unveiled during the last three years in Latin America, in addition to reflecting the way in which corruption moves the gears of the institutions and business organizations, can be considered as one of the main triggers of the aporophobia (rejection, hatred of the poor) and moral blindness (inability to identify the condition of vulnerability of others) that afflicts our societies. Considering the springs that activate both phenomena, this article explores the possibilities that smithian sympathy has to deactivate them, as well as its social contribution in the fight against corruption that any country could undertake. This article analyzes Zygmunt Bauman's notion of moral blindness against the backdrop of his designation of modern culture as a dynamic process of liquefaction constantly dissolving every paradigm and subject to the flexible and indeterminate power of individual choice. Bauman argued that the social conditions of this radically individualistic liquid modernity result in a kind of moral insensitivity that he calls adiaphorization. Adiaphorization for him places certain human acts outside the "universe of moral obligations." It defies the entire orthodox theory of the social origins of morality as it reveals that some dehumanizing monstrous atrocities like the holocaust and genocides are not exclusively reserved for monsters, but can be attributable to "frighteningly normal" moral agents. The present text therefore attempts to discuss the various moral implications of Bauman's analysis of moral blindness, with a view to highlighting its weaknesses. It moves on to explore Bauman's recourse to Emmanuel Levinas' ethics of the "face of the Other" as a viable ethical remedy that trumps the uncanny effects of this whole adiaphorization effect. Finally, the paper further advances his call for a rediscovery of the sense of belonging, by appealing to some major insights originating from African traditions of ethical communalism in order to propose a possible route towards the avoidance and amelioration of this moral challenge. Although apparently irrational, people with seemingly high moral standards routinely make immoral decisions or engage in morally questionable behavior. It appears as if under certain circumstances, people become in some enigmatic way blind to the immoral aspects of what they are doing or consequences of their immoral actions. This article focuses and reports on a psychoanalytic inquiry into the role of emotions and the unconscious management of unwanted emotions in promoting moral blindness. Emotions are essential to the conscience, self-sanctioning, and advancement of moral behavior. Notwithstanding moral ideations, a sufficiently strong counterwill may create incongruence between moral intentions and actual desires or behavior. The unwelcome experience of acute moral emotions such as guilt and anxiety is likely to activate a range of psychological defense mechanisms and unconscious processes to manage these emotions. It is argued that the management of these emotions through undue avoidance, inappropriate regulation, or lack of regulation, can bypass self-sanctioning. As result, the condition of moral blindness can develop or be sustained. The psychoanalytic explanations offered contribute to the understanding as to how emotions in combination with the unconscious mind can cause moral blindness in any person, notwithstanding high moral standards and good intentions. Improved understanding of moral blindness represents an important scientific step in improved understanding of our moral and immoral selves, with all its complexities, conflicts, and contradictions.
