This research project envisions using a lunar observation platform to measure the full-wave (0.2~100 μm) and shortwave (0.2~4.3 μm) radiation of the Earth, achieving an accurate estimation of the overall radiation budget of the Earth. Based on the lunar platform, the system analyzes Earth's radiation characteristics and geometric attributes, as well as the sampling properties of observation times. Informed by these analyses, an Earth-facing optical radiation measurement system tailored to these specifications is designed. The optical system adopts an off-axis three-mirror configuration with a secondary image plane, incorporating a field stop at the primary image plane to effectively suppress solar stray light, scattered lunar surface light, and background radiation from the instrument itself, ensuring the satisfactory signal-to-noise ratio, detection sensitivity, and observation duration of the instrument. At the same time, stringent requirements are imposed for the surface treatments of instrument components and temperature control accuracy to further ensure accuracy. Simulation analyses confirm that the design satisfies requirements, achieving a measurement accuracy of better than 1% across the entire optical system. A Moon‐based sensor can observe the Earth as a single point and achieve disk‐integrated measurements of outgoing longwave radiation (OLR), which significantly differs from low orbital, geostationary, and Sun–Earth L1 point platforms. In this study, a scheme of determining the disk‐integrated Earth's OLR based on a Moon‐based platform is proposed. The observational solid angle was theoretically derived based on the Earth's ellipsoid model and the disk‐integrated observational anisotropic factor was estimated to eliminate the effects of the Earth's radiant anisotropy. The simulated disk‐integrated Earth's OLR obtained from a Moon‐based platform varies periodically, due to changes in the observation geometry and Earth's scene distribution within the observed Earth's disk. Clouds, meteorological parameters, and the land cover distribution notably affect the disk‐integrated Earth's OLR. By analyzing the disk‐integrated Earth's OLR from a Moon‐based platform, significant variabilities were investigated. Additionally, the Earth's shape and radiant anisotropy that affecting the disk‐integrated Earth's OLR were estimated. In conclusion, a more realistic Earth's shape, the latest version of the angular distribution model (ADM), and accurate land cover and meteorological datasets are needed when determining the disk‐integrated Earth's OLR. It is expected the unique variability captured by this platform and its ability to complement traditional satellite data make it a valuable tool for studying Earth's radiation budget and energy cycle, and contributing to diagnostic of the climate General Circulation Models (GCM) performance. Plain Language Summary: Observing large‐scale geoscience phenomena poses a significant challenge, necessitating observations that guarantee spatial continuity and temporal consistency. Equipping sensors on the lunar surface can observe the whole Earth's disk, which is a feasible way to complement the existing satellites. Determining the disk‐integrated Earth's OLR from a Moon‐based platform helps in exploring its potential for detecting geoscience phenomena at different scales. Our study finds that the Moon‐based disk‐integrated Earth's OLR would provide full coverage of the whole Earth's phase angle during one sidereal month. The day‐night and land‐ocean effects on the Moon‐based disk‐integrated OLR during one sidereal month would provide substantial variability to compare to similarly sampled GCM output comparison that is not available from conventional satellite data. Of these, the Lagrange points situated in the cislunar space proffer noteworthy prospects for space-based Earth observation. Although extant research predominantly centers on Moon-based Earth observation and the L1 point within the Sun-Earth system, the realm of cislunar space remains relatively unexplored. This paper scrutinizes the overarching characteristics of the L1 point within the Earth-Moon system concerning Earth observation. A pivotal enhancement is introduced through the incorporation of the halo orbit. This research comprehensively analyzes the relative motion between the halo orbiter and the Earth, achieved via orbit determination within a rotating coordinate system, followed by a transformation into the Earth coordinate system. Subsequently, numerical simulations employing ephemeris data unveil the observing geometry and Earth observation characteristics, encompassing the distribution of nadir points, viewing angles, and the spatiotemporal ground coverage. As a point of reference, we also present a case study involving a Moon-based platform. Our findings reveal that the motion of the halo orbit, perpendicular to the lunar orbital plane, results in a broader range of nadir point latitudes, which can extend beyond 42°N/S, contingent upon the orbit's size. Additionally, it manifests a more intricate latitude variation, characterized by the bimodal peaks of the proposed temporal complexity curve. The viewing angles and the spatiotemporal ground coverage closely resemble those of Moon-based platforms, with a marginal enhancement in coverage frequency for polar regions. Consequently, it can be deduced that the Earth observation characteristics of the L1 point within the Earth-Moon system bear a close resemblance to those of Moon-based platforms. Moon-based synthetic aperture radar (SAR) offers unprecedented temporal and spatial coverage. Its repeat-pass interferometry is expected to play a substantial role in earth science because of its large-scale, long-term, near 24.8 h revisit period, and stable earth observation ability. However, it faces a greater challenge when the signal passes through the ionosphere compared with the low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite. In this study, we constructed a total electron content (hereafter referred to as TEC) calculation model for the propagation path of a moon-based SAR signal based on International reference ionosphere model and moon-based SAR interferometry (InSAR) geometry. Subsequently, the ionospheric delay at various carrier frequencies was quantitatively evaluated under different time baseline types. The results show that the interferometric phase space gradient caused by ionospheric can reach ten times that of LEO SAR satellites with superposition of diurnal and seasonal ionospheric variations. In addition, this problem in the observation area with a large incident angle is more severe, which limits the effective swath width of moon-based repeat-pass InSAR. The ionospheric delay effects can be avoided to some extent by selecting the interference combination at nighttime or approaching the solar altitude angle. To highlight the large-scale ground deformation information in most cases and give full play to the long-term and stable observation advantages of the moon-based platform, accurate ionospheric correction or compensation must be considered.

Earth's outgoing radiation (EOR) at the top-of-atmosphere (TOA) is a vital parameter of earth's energy budget. Moon-based earth observations as one of the scientific goals of the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS) project could provide long-term, well-calibrated, and disk-integrated EOR data to complement existing platforms. To study the difference between a Moon-based platform and existing platforms, in this study, we established a method to simulate outgoing longwave (OLR) and shortwave radiation (OSR) from a Moon-based radiometer. Then, by parameterizing Moon-based earth observations, the relationship between observation geometry and diurnal and seasonal variations of OLR were derived. Finally, the relationship between OSR viewed from a Moon-based sensor and earth's phase is obtained. We summarized three Moon-based EOR observation characteristics. 1) Moon-based observational scope is almost earth's hemisphere, and Earth–Moon distance has great effects on EOR. With the Moon moves from perigee to apogee, the OLR decreases almost 40% and OSR decreases about 60%. 2) Diurnal and seasonal variations also influent OLR, and compared correlation coefficients between OLR removing the effects of seasonal with diurnal, the former has bigger value, meaning hemisphere-scale observations is less sensitive to seasonal signals. 3) A Moon-based platform can observe the earth with different earth's phases. For OLR, earth's phase changes earth's scene. For OSR, with the increase of earth's phase, OSR is greatly decreased, the ratio of incoming shortwave radiation (ISR) is close to earth albedo when the earth's phase is 0°. Our results offer new understanding that will help to facilitate Moon-based monitoring of EOR.

Observation angles are of great importance with respect to Earth observation platforms. The richness of angular combination, i.e., the combination of three observational angles (viewing zenith angle, solar zenith angle, and relative azimuth angle), is an important parameter to illustrate the angle sampling capability of an Earth observation platform. Here, the angular combination characteristics of a Moon-based platform were investigated and compared with existing artificial satellites. Furthermore, the effects of the time sampling interval on the angular combination characteristics were analyzed using a newly established angular combination number index (ACNI). Results show that a Moon-based platform can complement angular sampling observations from existing satellites. We found that the time sampling interval has different effects on the angular combination for different observed points. Accordingly, the Earth's surface can be divided into two zones with respect to its sensitivity to the time sampling interval. When the time sampling interval increased from 10 min to 2 h, the maximum loss of the angular combination reached 50% for the observed points in the mid–low latitude zone. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The advantages of its large-scale observational scope, long temporal duration, and multi-layer detecting of the Earth will undoubtedly advance our understanding of the Earth system. To carry out the observations from a Moon-based optical sensor, the geolocation error caused by exterior orientation elements need to be investigated. This paper analyses the error effects of exterior orientation elements on geolocation for an optical sensor. To estimate the error, we present a geometric image model and utilise some parameters to measure the image offsets. Through a large number of numerical simulations, the results demonstrate that the image offsets are not obvious influenced by the distance and observation angle at mid-high latitude of the Moon and have linear correlation with the increasing errors of the exterior orientation elements. Further, the relationship between the spatial resolution and errors of exterior orientation elements are revealed. Finally, the error characteristics for Moon-based Earth observation are discussed. It is expected that the conclusion drawn in this paper could support the study of a Moon-based Earth observation optical sensor.

As the only natural satellite of the Earth, and having a stable lunar surface as well as a particular orbit, Moon-based Earth observations allow the Earth to be viewed as a single point. Furthermore, in contrast with artificial satellites, the varied inclination of Moon-based observations can improve angular samplings of specific locations on Earth. However, the potential for estimating the global outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) from the Earth with such a platform has not yet been fully explored. To evaluate the possibility of calculating OLR using specific Earth observation geometry, we constructed a model to estimate Moon-based OLR measurements and investigated the potential of a Moon-based platform to acquire the necessary data to estimate global mean OLR. The primary method of our study is the discretization of the observational scope into various elements and the consequent integration of the OLR of all elements. Our results indicate that a Moon-based platform is suitable for global sampling related to the calculation of global mean OLR. By separating the geometric and anisotropic factors from the measurement calculations, we ensured that measured values include the effects of the Moon-based Earth observation geometry and the anisotropy of the scenes in the observational scope. Although our results indicate that higher measured values can be achieved if the platform is located near the center of the lunar disk, a maximum difference between locations of approximately 9 × 10−4 W m−2 indicates that the effect of location is too small to remarkably improve observation performance of the platform. In conclusion, our analysis demonstrates that a Moon-based platform has the potential to provide continuous, adequate, and long-term data for estimating global mean OLR.

As a new potential platform for Earth observation, the Moon which is a natural satellite unique to the Earth has been paid more and more attention for its consistent and continuous observation capability of global-scale and macroscopic geoscience phenomena on Earth. Because of the effect of Earth curvature and the Earth–Moon geometric relationship, the geometric correction of the Moon-based Earth observation (MBEO) hemisphere images is more complex than that required for images obtained from low Earth orbit (LEO) platforms and need to be investigated, such as optical images in visible/thermal infrared frequencies or synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images in microwave frequency. In addition, it is also difficult to find the uniformly distributed geometric correction control points on the entire surface of the Earth caused by sea and cloud cover in most regions. In this paper, a polar coordinate system on a projection surface related to the sublunar point is designed to facilitate the geometric correction of MBEO hemisphere images and to try to compensate for the problems of geometrical distortion caused by the shift of the sublunar point, the curvature of the Earth and the terrain fluctuation. Through simulation analysis, the geometric error characteristics and conditions in which the proposed moon-projection polar coordinate system can be used are discussed. This involves considering the Earth model, the projection method, the offset of the sublunar point and the external error. The results show the validity and adaptation of the proposed polar coordinate system and will support the further study of the geometric correction of MEBO images. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Earth System Science is a discipline that performs holistic and comprehensive research on various components of the Earth. One of a key issue for the Earth monitoring and observation is to enhance the observation duration, the time intervals during which the Earth surface features can be observed by sensors. In this work, we propose to utilise the Moon as an Earth observation platform. Thanks to the long distance between the Earth and the Moon, and the vast space on the lunar surface which is suitable for sensor installation, this Earth observation platform could have large spatial coverage, long temporal duration, and could perform multi-layer detection of the Earth. The line of sight between a proposed Moon-based platform and the Earth will change with different lunar surface positions; therefore, in this work, the position of the lunar surface was divided into four regions, including one full observation region and three incomplete observation regions. As existing methods are not able to perform global-scale observations, a Boolean matrix method was established to calculate the necessary observation durations from a Moon-based platform. Based on Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) ephemerides and Earth Orientation Parameters (EOP), a formula was developed to describe the geometrical relationship between the Moon-based platform and Earth surface features in the unified spatial coordinate system and the unified time system. In addition, we compared the observation geometries at different positions on the lunar surface and two parameters that are vital to observation duration calculations were considered. Finally, an analysis method was developed. We found that the observation duration of a given Earth surface feature shows little difference regardless of sensor position within the full observation region. However, the observation duration for sensors in the incomplete observation regions is reduced by at least half.
