118 pp. (1996)., In this thesis a determination of the proton structure function $F_2(x, Q^2)$ at large momentum transfers in the kinematical domain $150GeV^2 \leq Q^2 \leq 5000GeV^2$ and $3 \cdot 10^{-3} \leq x \leq 3 \cdot 10^{-1}$ is presented. The data for this analysis was taken by the HERA experiment H1 in 1994 and corresponds to an integrated luminosity $\mathcal{L} = 2557 nb^{-1}$. The events are characterized by an electron, which was scattered at a large angle by a constituent quark of the proton. The selection of the events was mainly based on the detection of the scattered electron in the H1 calorimeter. Two different procedures were used for reconstruction of the kinematical variables $x, y$ and $Q^2$. The Electron Method is based on the energy and the angle of the scattered electron, while the $\sum$-Method in addition uses information of the final hadronic state. The main topics of this thesis were the reconstruction of the energy and the angle of the scattered electron, the efficiency of the selection and the determination of the remaining background in the selected data. The influence of the weak interaction was investigated. Both reconstruction methods gave results for $F_2 (x, Q^2)$ which are in good agreement within the errors. A section of the results together with other H1 results in the kinematical domain of low momentum transfers $Q^2$ were taken for a NLO-QCD-Fit, which was based on the DGLAP equations. This NLO-QCD-Fit, which described the data well within the errors, was recently published by the H1 Collaboration.

23 pp. (1995)., Charged particle production has been measured in Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) events using the ZEUS detector over a large range of $Q~2$ from 10 to $1280 {\rm\ GeV}~2$. The evolution with $Q$ of the charged multiplicity and scaled momentum has been investigated in the current fragmentation region of the Breit frame. The data are used to study QCD \linebreak coherence effects in DIS and are compared with corresponding \eedata in order to test the universality of quark fragmentation.

16 pp. (1995)., Jet production in deep inelastic scattering for 120 < Q 2 < 3600 GeV 2 has been studied using data from an integrated luminosity of 3.2 pb −1 collected with the ZEUS detector at HERA. Jets are identified with the JADE algorithm. A cut on the angular distribution of parton emission in the γ ∗ - parton centre-of-mass system minimises the experimental and theoretical uncertainties in the determination of the jet rates. The jet rates, when compared to O ( α s 2 ) perturbative QCD calculations, allow a precise determination of α s ( Q ) in three Q 2 -intervals. The values are consistent with a running of ifα s ( Q ), as expected from QCD. Extrapolating to Q = M Z 0 α s ( M Z 0 ) = 0.117 ± 0.005 (stat) −0.005 +0.004 (syst exp ) ± 0.007 (syst theory ).

31 pp. (1995)., This paper presents an analysis of the inclusive properties of diffractive deep inelastic scattering events produced in $ep$ interactions at HERA. The events are characterised by a rapidity gap between the outgoing proton system and the remaining hadronic system. Inclusive distributions are presented and compared with Monte Carlo models for diffractive processes. The data are consistent with models where the pomeron structure function has a hard and a soft contribution. The diffractive structure function is measured as a function of $x_{\mathbb p}$, the momentum fraction lost by the proton, of $\beta$, the momentum fraction of the struck quark with respect to $x_{\mathbb p}$, and of $Q^2$. The $x_{\mathbb p}$ dependence is consistent with the form$ (1/x_{\mathbb p})^a$ where $a=1.30\pm0.08(stat)~{+0.08}_{-0.14}(sys)$ in all bins of $\beta$ and $Q^2$. In the measured $Q^2$ range, the diffractive structure function approximately scales with $Q^2$ at fixed $\beta$. In an Ingelman-Schlein type model, where commonly used pomeron flux factor normalisations are assumed, it is found that the quarks within the pomeron do not saturate the momentum sum rule.

19 pp. (1995)., Deep inelastic scattering (DIS) events, selected from 1993 data taken by the H1 experiment at HERA, are studied in the Breit frame of reference. The fragmentation function of the quark is compared with those of e + e − data. It is shown that certain aspects of the quarks emerging from within the proton in e − p interactions are essentially the same as those of quarks pair-created from the vacuum in e + e − annihilation. The measured area, peak position and width of the fragmentation function show that the kinematic evolution variable, equivalent to the e + e − squared centre of mass energy, is in the Breit frame the invariant square of the four-momentum transfer. We comment on the extent to which we have evidence for coherence effects in pArton showers.

16 pp. (1995)., A measurement is presented, using data taken with the H1 detector at HERA, of the contribution of diffractive interactions to deep-inelastic electron-proton ( ep ) scattering in the kinematic range 8.5 < Q 2 < 50GeV 2 , 2.4 × 10 −4 < Bjorken- x < 0.0133, and 3.7 × 10 −4 < χ p < 0.043. The diffractive contribution to the proton structure function F 2 ( x , Q 2 ) is evaluated as a function of the appropriate deep-inelastic scattering variables χ p , Q 2 , β (= χ χ p ) using a class of deep-inelastic ep scattering events with no hadronic energy flow in an interval of pseudo-rapidity adjacent to the proton beam direction. the dependence of this contribution on χ p is measured to be χ p − n with n = 1.19 ± 0.06 (stat.) ± 0.07 (syst.) independent of β and Q 2 , which is consistent with both a diffractive interpretation and a factorisable ep diffractive cross section. A first measurement of the deep-inelastic structure of the pomeron in the form of the Q 2 and β dependences of a factorised structure function is presented. For all measured β, this structure function is observed to be consistent with scale invariance.

32 pp. (1995)., A measurement of the proton structure function F 2 ( x , Q 2 ) is reported for momentum transfers squared Q 2 between 4.5 GeV 2 and 1600 GeV 2 and for Bjorken x between 1.8 × 10 −14 and 0.13 using data collected by the HERA experiment H1 in 1993. It is observed that F 2 increases significantly with decreasing x , confirming our previous measurement made with one tenth of the data available in this analysis. The Q 2 dependence is approximately logarithmic over the full kinematic range covered. The subsample of deep inelastic events with a large pseudo-rapidity gap in the hadronic energy flow close to the proton remnant is used to measure the “diffractive” contribution to F 2 .

33 pp. (1995)., We present new sets of fragmentation functions for charged pions and kaons, both at leading and next-to-leading order. They are fitted to TPC data taken at energy $\sqrt s=3D29$GeV and describe excellently a wealth of other $e~+e~-$ data on charged-hadron production, ranging from $\sqrt s=3D5.2$GeV way up to LEP1 energy. They also agree with data on the production of neutral pions and kaons, if one makes the natural assumption that the respective fragmentation funct= ions are related to the charged counterparts by SU(2) symmetry. We also list simple parameterizations of the $x$ and $Q~2$ dependence of our results, which may be implemented conveniently in applications.

15 pp. (1994)., A next--to--leading order QCD analysis of deep inelastic scattering data is performed allowing for contributions due to a light gluino. We obtain the values of $\alpha_s(M_Z^2) \pm \delta \alpha_s^{stat} = 0.108 \pm 0.002, 0.124 \pm 0.001, 0.145 \pm 0.009$ for QCD, SUSY QCD with a Majorana gluino and a Dirac gluino respectively. The value of $\alpha_s(M_Z^2)$ obtained in SUSY QCD with a Majorana gluino best agrees with the direct measurements of $\alpha_s(M_Z^2)$ at LEP.

13 pp. (1993)., In deep inelastic, neutral current scattering of electrons and protons at s=296GeV, we observe in the ZEUS detector events with a large rapidity gap in the hadronic final state. They occur in the region of small Bjorken x and are observed up to Q2 of 100 GeV2. They account for about 5% of the events with Q2⩾10 GeV2. Their general properties are inconsistent with the dominant mechanism of deep inelastic scattering, where color is transferred between the scattered quark and the proton remnant, and suggest that the underlying production mechanism is the diffractive dissociation of the virtual photon.

(1983). doi:10.1103/PhysRevD.27.2063, We show that in a model where fragmentation functions are created from jet calculus followed by recombination, the fragmentation function of charmed quarks into D mesons will fail to peak at low x at currently accessible values of Q2. Likewise, the fragmentation of a c quark into a Λc is much less peaked toward small x than the production of protons by u quarks. The model predicts a magnitude for the fragmentation function much smaller than is experimentally observed.
