Giant planets on short-period orbits are predicted to be inflated and eventually engulfed by their host stars. However, the detailed timescales and stages of these processes are not well known. Here we present the discovery of three hot Jupiters (P $, Comment: 22 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal

The main subject of this thesis is to demonstrate that helium is a promising candidate for matter wave interferometry, with the goal of providing an improved value for the fine-structure constant, α. In particular, fast and efficient momentum transfer via Bloch oscillations in an optical lattice is demonstrated, together with the enhanced sensitivity offered by an ion-detector based detection scheme that is unique to metastable helium (He*). The experiments are performed in a setup that was built to produce, slow down and trap ultracold (~0.2 μK) He-4 atoms. The approach to realising an ultracold sample of He* atoms consists of a sequence of trapping and cooling stages. The experiment starts at the plasma discharge source, where helium atoms are excited to the so-called metastable 2-3S1 state, with a lifetime of ~7800 seconds, 20 eV above the atomic ground state. The atomic beam exiting from the source is 2-D collimated by 1083 nm laser light, resonant to the closed 2-3S1 - 2-3P2 cooling transition. Next, the atoms are slowed down from about 1000- to 50 m/s in a two meter long Zeeman slower through continuous absorption of resonant 1083 nm light. The slowed atoms are captured in a Magneto-Optical Trap (MOT), that holds up to 5x10^8 atoms at a temperature of 1 mK. The MOT cloud is compressed, spin-polarised and transferred to a cloverleaf Magnetic Trap (MT), which provides both axial and radial trapping through a set of coils outside the vacuum. In the MT, 1D-Doppler cooling is applied to the atomic sample to reduce the temperature to about 150 μK. Following this step, the temperature is reduced further by forced evaporative radio-frequency cooling, resulting in the onset of a Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC). The atoms are transferred from the MT to a crossed horizontal optical dipole trap (ODT), in which the sample is further evaporatively cooled to produce a BEC of 5x10^6 atoms. The BEC is then transferred from the ODT to either a horizontal or vertical optical lattice, consisting of two counter-propagating laser beams at 1557 nm. By detuning the frequency of one of the lattice beams, the standing wave can be accelerated. The trapped helium atoms can follow the accelerating lattice through a process called Bloch oscillations (BO's), which describes the behaviour of particles in a periodic potential that are subjected to a force. Specifically, in this scenario, particles' velocities increase in increments of two recoil velocities, instead of continuously. Bloch oscillations of cold atoms in periodic potentials formed by optical lattices were first studied in 1996. Importantly, BO’s provide a way to efficiently accelerate atoms by coherently transferring a well controlled, large number of photon momenta, which has been used to increase the resolution of recoil measurements with caesium and rubidium atoms. In this thesis, Bloch oscillations with a metastable helium BEC are demonstrated. Due to its light mass, helium can be efficiently accelerated to high velocities which makes it a candidate for experiments that benefit from splitting the atomic wave-function over large distances. Additionally, Rabi-oscillations in an optical lattice are shown, which serve to probe the depth of the lattice, and a measurement of gravity through Bloch oscillations in a static vertical optical lattice is demonstrated, with a statistical uncertainty of 4x10^-5. Finally, the first proof of principle demonstration of a pulsed light He* atom interferometer is shown. The measurements illustrate the high signal-to-noise that can be obtained using an MCP detector. Next to that, we have demonstrated a method for determining the polarizability of atoms at specific wavelengths, by observing the induced change of the characteristic Bloch oscillation frequency by introducing that wavelength to the system.

In this thesis, we report the demonstration of a detection technique able to probe, with a single-atom sensitivity, the momentum distribution of an ultracold gas loaded inside a 3D optical lattice. We have developed a micro-channel plate detector, able to electronically probe clouds of metastable Helium-4. The gas is detected after a time-of-flight of 325ms, long enough to reach the far-field expansion, where the spatial distribution of the cloud can be mapped to the asymptotic momentum distribution. By putting ourselves in a regime where the lattice filling is close to unity, the atomic collisions in the first instant of the expansion become negligible, so that the asymptotic momentum distribution is equal to the in situ momentum distribution. We experimentally demonstrate this equality, by comparing our far-field measurements with the momentum distribution calculated from the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian, thanks to ab initio quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We show a good agreement with the theory over more than 3 orders of magnitude in density. Those simulations are calculated with our experimental parameters, the temperature being the only adjustable variable. We then use this comparison to perform a precise thermometry of the lattice gas, allowing us to explore the superfluid-normal gas transition through a direct measurement of different quantities, like the condensed fraction or the two-particles correlation function.; Ce travail de thèse démontre une technique de détection capable de mesurer, avec une sensibilité à l'atome unique, l'espace des impulsions d'un gaz ultrafroid chargé dans un réseau optique 3D. We report two Quantum Atom Optics experiments : the atomic Hong-Ou-Mandel experiment and preliminary results toward Bell's inequality test on momentum of two atoms. Both experiments reveal interesting behaviors of matter. The first one shows a 2-particle interference and the second one suggests entanglement momenta between two atoms. These aspects of quantum mechanics are really surprising and unintuitive. Realizing these experiments with a few atoms in a controlled environment are necessary to strengthen our understanding of the world, particularly when quantum mechanics and gravitation act simultaneously.; Deux expériences d'Optique Atomique Quantique sont étudiées dans ce manuscrit : l'expérience Hong-Ou-Mandel atomique ainsi qu'une expérience préliminaire au test des inégalités de Bell sur la variable d'impulsion de deux atomes. Ces deux expériences permettent de révéler des comportements très particuliers de la matière. La première produit une interférence à deux particules et la seconde suggère l'intrication de deux atomes en impulsion. Ces deux aspects de la mécanique quantique sont non-intuitifs et surprenants. Pouvoir les réaliser avec quelques atomes dans des environnements contrôlés est nécessaire à la consolidation de nos connaissances des lois de la nature et tout particulièrement quand mécanique quantique et gravitation sont à l'oeuvre simultanément.

The need to synchronise quantum information and communication protocols implies the use of quantum memories. Different physical systems are investigated nowadays, among which ions in crystals, cold atoms and atomic vapours. The most common protocol is based on the Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) phenomenon: a light pulse is engraved in the Raman coherence of both ground states of an atomic Lambda–type three-level system. Though it opens promising perspectives, with respect to efficiency, fidelity and storage time, this technique is, however, sensitive to dephasing effects such as magnetic field gradients.In this thesis, I first study the storage of classical light pulses via EIT in a room- temperature metastable helium vapor. The obtained experimental results agree with the numerical simulation of the complete Maxwell-Bloch equations of the system. In particular, the existence of an extra phase acquired by the retrieved pulse is demonstrated in the detuned configuration, which can be explained by the propagation of the signal beam in the medium. In the second part, I experimentally isolate, in the same system, a new storage protocol based on the Coherent Population Oscillation (CPO) phenomenon, which is by nature more robust than EIT to dephasing effects. The numerical simulations allow us to precisely analyse the mechanisms involved in a CPO memory and, in particular, the influence of the relative phase between the signal and coupling beams on the storage efficiencies., La nécessité de synchroniser les différentes étapes des protocoles d’information et de communication quantiques implique l’utilisation de mémoires quantiques. Différents systèmes physiques sont aujourd’hui explorés, parmi lesquels les ions en matrice cristalline, les atomes froids et les vapeurs atomiques. Le protocole de stockage le plus couramment utilisé se fonde sur le phénomène de Transparence Electromagnétiquement Induite (EIT) : une impulsion lumineuse est gravée dans la cohérence Raman entre les deux états fondamentaux d’un système atomique à trois niveaux en Lambda. Bien qu’elle ouvre des perspectives prometteuses, en termes d’efficacité, de fidélité et de temps de stockage, cette technique est néanmoins sensible aux effets déphasants, tels que des gradients de champs magnétiques.Dans ce mémoire, j’étudie tout d’abord le stockage d’impulsions lumineuses classiques par EIT dans une vapeur d’hélium métastable à température ambiante. Les résultats expérimentaux obtenus sont en accord avec les simulations numériques des équations de Maxwell-Bloch complètes du système et montrent notamment l’existence d’une phase supplémentaire acquise par l’impulsion restituée en configuration désaccordée. Cette phase s’explique par la propagation du faisceau sonde dans un milieu dispersif. Dans une deuxième partie, je mets expérimentalement en évidence, dans le même système, une nouvelle forme de stockage basée sur le phénomène d’Oscillations Cohérentes de Population (CPO), par nature plus robuste aux effets déphasants que l’EIT. Les simulations numériques permettent d’analyser plus précisément les mécanismes à l’œuvre dans une mémoire CPO et, notamment, l’influence de la phase relative entre les faisceaux signal et de couplage sur les efficacités de stockage.

In this thesis, we report the first observation of the particles associated with the quantum depletion and the first measurements of the momentum distribution of correlated superfluid lattice bosons. We performed the experiment with a degenerate metastable Helium gas with a novel experimental setup. Making possible with metastable Helium, our electronic detection allows single-atom detection in momentum space k.Firsly, we have demonstrated a new approach to Bose-Einstein condensation of metastable Helium using a hybrid trap, consisting of a magnetic quadrupole and a crossed optical dipole trap. It results in production of a condensate every 6 seconds. Then we observed the excited particles out of the condensate wavefunction due to presence of the interactions (quantum depletion). We observe atom distributions decaying at large momenta k with the 1/k4 power-law predicted by Bogoliubov theory. Furthermore we studied the three-dimensional far field distribution of correlated superfluid lattice bosons. The momentum distributions of the trapped atoms calculated with an ab-initio Monte-Carlo Worm algorithm for the experimental parameters are in excellent agreement with the measured distributions. The finite temperature effect is not negligible, paving the way for a precise thermometry.; Ce travail de thèse décrit la première observation directe de particules associées à la déplétion quantique et de premières mesures dans l’espace des impulsions d’un superfluide sur réseau. Ces observations ont été réalisées à partir d'un gaz dégénéré d'Hélium métastable sur un tout nouvel dispositif expérimental, dont la construction a été terminée au cours de cette thèse. Permise par l’Hélium métastable, notre détection électronique sensible à l’atome unique donne accès à la distribution tridimensionnelle dans l’espace des impulsions k.Nous avons d’abord développé une approche hybride pour la réalisation de condensats de Bose-Einstein, qui utilise un piège magnétique comme réservoir du piège dipolaire. Cette méthode permet la production rapide de condensats de Bose-Einstein toutes les 6 secondes sur notre expérience. Nous avons alors pu observer, pour la première fois, les particules excitées hors du condensat à cause des interactions (déplétion quantique). En particulier, nous avons observé la loi de puissance en 1/k4 dans la distribution pour de larges impulsions k, comme attendue dans la théorie de Bogoliubov. Enfin nous avons étudié les distributions de superfluide sur réseau. Il s’agit d’une première mesure de la distribution en impulsion dans un réseau comme le démontre les simulations numériques (Monte-Carlo quantique). Les effets de températures sur les distributions mesurées sont extrêmement visibles, ce qui ouvre la voie à une thermométrie des superfluides sur réseau.

In this thesis, we report the first realisation of the Hong–Ou–Mandel experiment with massive particles in momentum space. This milestone experiment was originally performed in quantum optics: two photons arriving simultaneously at the input ports of a 50:50 beam-splitter always emerge together in one of the output ports. The effect leads to a reduction of coincidence counts which translates into a dip when particles are indistinguishable. We performed the experiment with metastable helium atoms where the specificities of the Micro-Channel-Plate detector allows one to recover the momentum vector of each individual atom.After listing the necessary tools to perform this experiment with atoms, the experimental sequence is discussed and the results are presented. In particular we measured a coincidence count reduction that cannot be explained through any simple classical model. This corresponds to the signature of a two-particle interference, and confirms that our atomic pair source produces beams which have highly correlated populations and are well mode matched. This opens the prospect of testing Bell’s inequalities involving mechanical observables of massive particles, such as momentum, using methods inspired by quantum optics. It also demonstrates a new way to produce and benchmark twin-atom pairs that may be of interest for quantum information processing., Cette thèse décrit l'observation expérimentale de l'effet Hong-Ou-Mandel avec une sourceatomique ultra-froide. L’expérience originale réalisée en 1987 par C. K. Hong, Z. Y. Ou et L. Mandel illustre de façon simple une interférence à deux particules explicable uniquement par la mécanique quantique : deux particules bosoniques et indiscernables, arrivant chacune sur une face d'entrée différente d'une lame semi-réfléchissante ressortent ensemble. Cet effet se traduit par une réduction du taux de détection en coïncidence entre les deux voies de sortie quand les particules arrivent simultanément sur la lame. Cette expérience fut originalement réalisée avec des photons et nous rapportons ici la première mise en oeuvre expérimentale avec des particules massives se propageant dans l’espace libre.Après présentation des différentes techniques nécessaires à sa réalisation, nous décrivons cette expérience et analysons les résultats obtenus. En particulier, la réduction du taux de coïncidence est suffisamment forte pour exclure toute interprétation classique ; l'observation de cet effet constitue une brique fondamentale dans le domaine de l’information quantique atomique.

This thesis describes the work done over the past three and a half years on the new metastable helium experiment at the Institut d'Optique in Palaiseau. In the first chapter it describes a study to improve both the efficiency and the accuracy of the Microchannel Plate (MCP) detection system. We have experimented with adding a gold layer on the top of the input plate, something that we have found increases the efficiency but also decreases the accuracy. The addition of a voltage between the two stacked plates has been shown to both raise the efficiency and improve the accuracy in non-coated MCPs.The second chapter is devoted to the construction of the experimental apparatus. Here the excitation of ground state helium to its metastable state is described, as well as the subsequent collimation and cooling by Zeeman slower of the resulting hot atomic beam. The slowed beam is then captured in a Magneto-Optical Trap, in which we have captured 8x108 atoms.In the third chapter an original study on three-dimensional Doppler cooling in a red-detuned molasses and in the Magneto-Optical trap is presented. The metastable helium system is unique as there is no multiple scattering of photons and there are no sub-Doppler effects. This allows for a never before seen experimental realisation of pure Doppler cooling theory. The fourth chapter describes a study on collisions in a magneto-optical trap of metastable helium. Light-induced Penning collisions are responsible for high trap losses at high intensities and at frequencies close to the transition frequency. We measure the constant rate coefficient to Ksp = 2.8 ± 0.4 x 10-7cm3/s.; Cette thèse décrit le travail accompli au cours des trois dernières années sur la nouvelle expérience d’Hélium métastable de l'Institut d'Optique à Palaiseau.Le premier chapitre décrit une étude visant à améliorer à la fois l'efficacité et la précision du système de détection par galettes à micro-canaux (MCP). Nous avons fait des mesures avec des galettes recouvertes d'une couche d'or sur la face avant, obtenant un accroissement de l'efficacité de détection mais également une réduction de la précision. L'ajout d'une tension intermédiaires entre les deux galettes empilées a au contraire améliorer à la fois l'efficacité et la précision des MCP, en l’absence d’une couche d’or.Le deuxième chapitre est consacré à la construction de l'appareil expérimental pour le refroidissement et le piégeage d’atomes. L’excitation de l'état fondamental de l’Hélium à l'état métastable est décrite, ainsi que la collimation et le refroidissement ultérieur par Zeeman lent du faisceau atomique chaud résultant. Le faisceau ralenti est alors capturé dans un piège magnéto-optique (PMO), dans lequel nous avons capturé 8x108 atomes.Dans le troisième chapitre une étude originale du refroidissement Doppler tridimensionnel dans un PMO et une mélasse désaccordée vers le rouge de la transition atomique est discutée. L’atome d’Hélium métastable est unique et ses propriétés ont permis une telle étude. En effet, les faibles densités atomiques impliquent qu’il n'y a pas de diffusion multiple de photons d’une part, et la faible masse et la faible largeur de la transition 23S1 -> 23P2 rend inefficace les processus de refroidissement sous la limite Doppler. Ces conditions nous ont permis d’observer pour la première fois à trois dimensions un gaz refroidit dans le régime Doppler.Le quatrième chapitre présente une étude sur les collisions dans un piège magnéto-optique d’Hélium métastable. Les collisions Penning induites par la lumière, en particulier à des intensités élevées et à des fréquences proches de la fréquence de transition, sont responsables de pertes élevées d’atomes piégés. Nous mesurons le coefficient de taux associé à ces pertes, Ksp = 2,8 ± 0,4 x 10-7cm3/ s.

This thesis describes the experimental realization and characterization of a source of pairs of correlated atoms. This tunable source is based upon four waves mixing in an optical lattice. The created atomic pairs are similar to photon pairs made by parametric down conversion and open the way toward more elaborate quantum atom optic experiments. By placing a Bose-Einstein condensate in a moving optical lattice the phase matching conditions are fulfilled and twins atoms are spontaneously produced. Thanks to a single atom detector with three-dimensional resolution, we were able to characterize our source of pairs. By studying the phase matching conditions, we proved that the atoms are preferentially produced in two narrow velocity classes conserving both momentum and energy. By modifying the duration and the velocity of the lattice with respect to the atoms, one can tune the output modes and their populations providing a fully tunable process. Moreover, we have demonstrated the important effect of interactions -especially of mean field effects- that modifies the energy conservation. The single atom detection provided also a convenient way to look at statistical properties of the twins atoms: we have demonstrated strong correlation between atoms from the same pair and also we have observed a reduction below the shot noise of the noise on the number of atoms in correlated modes. Such a reduction is a strong indication of the non-classical nature of the produced atomic pairs.; Ce mémoire de thèse décrit la création expérimentale et la caractérisation d'une source de paires d'atomes corrélés. Cette source ajustable repose sur l'utilisation du mélange à quatre ondes dans un réseau optique. Les paires ainsi créées sont similaires aux paires de photons produites par conversion paramétrique et ouvrent la porte à la réalisation d'expériences élaborées d'optique atomique quantique. En plaçant un condensat de Bose-Einstein dans un réseau en mouvement, les conditions d'accord de phase sont vérifiées et des atomes jumeaux sont alors produits spontanément. La détection d'atome unique permet également d'étudier les propriétés statistiques des atomes jumeaux, nous avons ainsi pu mettre en évidence de fortes corrélations entres les atomes issus d'une même paire. This thesis describes the experimental realization and characterization of a source of pairs of correlated atoms. This tunable source is based upon four waves mixing in an optical lattice. The created atomic pairs are similar to photon pairs made by parametric down conversion and open the way toward more elaborate quantum atom optic experiments. By placing a Bose-Einstein condensate in a moving optical lattice the phase matching conditions are fulfilled and twins atoms are spontaneously produced. Thanks to a single atom detector with three-dimensional resolution, we were able to characterize our source of pairs. By studying the phase matching conditions, we proved that the atoms are preferentially produced in two narrow velocity classes conserving both momentum and energy. By modifying the duration and the velocity of the lattice with respect to the atoms, one can tune the output modes and their populations providing a fully tunable process. Moreover, we have demonstrated the important effect of interactions -especially of mean field effects- that modifies the energy conservation. The single atom detection provided also a convenient way to look at statistical properties of the twins atoms: we have demonstrated strong correlation between atoms from the same pair and also we have observed a reduction below the shot noise of the noise on the number of atoms in correlated modes. Such a reduction is a strong indication of the non-classical nature of the produced atomic pairs.; Ce mémoire de thèse décrit la création expérimentale et la caractérisation d'une source de paires d'atomes corrélés. In this thesis we present ultracold sources using Bose-Einstein Condensates for atom interferometry and atomic physics applications. We produce a 87 Rb atom laser using an optical Raman out-coupling technique. The atoms are transferred from their initial magnetically trapped state to a state which is insensitive to magnetic fields and subsequently fall under gravity. We show that, in contrast to a standard Radio-Frequency (RF) out-coupling method, the initial momentum imparted to the atoms reduces the divergence and improves the spatial profile of the beam. Alternatively, we demon- strate that each of the two Raman beams can be used independently to provide efficient and coherent splitting of the atom laser using a fraction of back-reflected light. We also investigate theoretically the dynamics of RF out-coupled atom laser systems. Then we present details of significant improvements on the experimental setup used to condense metastable helium atoms (4He* ). We present the layout of a new laser system operated for trapping and cooling the atoms, as well as the optical configuration to transfer them into a dipole trap or an optical lattice. A channel electron multiplier is added to provide a non-destructive real-time detection method based on Penning collisions. Finally, we describe the design of a new magnetic trap with improved optical access, which we conceived and constructed to allow for 4He* Bose-Einstein condensation to be compatible with in-situ loading of the condensed gas into a 3 dimensional lattice., Dans ce mémoire nous présentons des sources ultra-froides utilisant des condensats de Bose-Einstein pour des applications en interféromètrie et physique atomiques. Nous produisons un laser à atomes de 87 Rb par couplage optique Raman. Initialement piégés magnétiquement, les atomes sont transférés dans un état insensible aux champs magnétiques et tombent sous l'effet de la gravité. Nous montrons qu'à l'inverse d'une méthode d'extraction Radio-Fréquence l'impulsion transférée aux atomes permet de réduire la divergence et d'améliorer le profil spatial du faisceau atomique. Nous prouvons que chacun des deux faisceaux Raman peut être utilisé indépendemment pour diffracter le laser à atomes de manière efficace et cohérente en utilisant une fraction de lumière rétro-diffusée. La dynamique des lasers à atomes extraits par couplage RF est également étudiée théoriquement. Nous détaillons ensuite les améliorations apportées au dispositif expérimental permettant de condenser des atomes d'hélium métastable (4He* ). Nous décrivons l'ensemble du nouveau système laser destiné au piégeage et au ralentissement des atomes, ainsi qu'à leur transfert dans un piège dipolaire ou un réseau optique. L'ajout d'un multiplicateur d'électrons fournit une méthode de détection non-destructive en temps réel fondée sur les collisions Penning. Enfin, nous présentons un nouveau piége magnétique à grande accessibilité optique, conçu et construit pour produire un condensat d'atomes 4He* et le transférer, in-situ, dans un réseau optique à 3 dimensions.

We study the photoassociation of an ultracold cloud of magnetically trapped helium atoms : pairs of colliding atoms interact with one or two laser fields to produce a purely long range 4He2(23S1-23P0) molecule, or a 4He2(23S1-23S1) long range molecule.Light shifts in one photon photoassociation spectra are measured and studied as a function of the laser polarization and intensity, and the vibrational state of the excited molecule. They result from the light-induced coupling between the excited molecule, and bound and scattering states of the interaction between two metastable atoms. Their analysis leads to the determination of the scattering length a=7.2 ± 0.6 ruling collisions between spin polarized atoms.The two photon photoassociation spectra show evidence of the production of polarized, long-range 4He2(23S1-23S1) molecules. They are said to be exotic as they are made of two metastable atoms, each one carrying a enough energy to ionize the other . The corresponding lineshapes are calculated and decomposed in sums and products of Breit-Wigner and Fano profiles associated to one and two photon processes. The experimental spectra are fit, and an intrinsic lifetime τ=1.4±0.3 μs is deduced.It is checked wether this lifetime could be limited by spin-dipole induced Penning autoionization. This interpretation requires that there is a quasi-bound state close to the dissociation threshold in the singlet interaction potential between metastable helium atoms for the theory to match the experiment., Nous étudions la photoassociation dans un gaz d'hélium métastable 4He(23S1) ultrafroid piégé magnétiquement : des paires d'atomes en collision interagissent avec un ou deux champs laser pour former des molécules à purement longue portée 4He2(23S1-23P0), ou longue portée 4He2(23S1-23S1).Des décalages lumineux dans la spectroscopie à un photon sont observés, et étudiés en fonction de l'intensité et la polarisation du laser de photoassociation, ainsi que l'état vibrationnel de la molécule photoassociée. Leur ajustement aux données expérimentales permet de déterminer la durée de vie intrinsèque de la molécule tau=1.4±0.3 ms. Nous tentons d'interpréter cette durée de vie en terme d'autoionisation Penning induite par relaxation de spin. Nous montrons que cette hypothèse implique qu'il y ait un état quasi-lié proche de dissociation dans le potentiel d'interaction singulet entre atomes métastables pour rendre compte des expériences.

This thesis deals with the measurement of the quantum intensity correlations in gases of métastable Helium. The measurement has been performed on thermal gases of bosonic 4He and fermionic 3He, as well as on Bose-Einstein condensates.In 1956, Robert Hanbury Brown et Richard Twiss measured the correlation between photons emitted from a single thermal source. The consequently demonstrated that the photons emitted by such a source tend to arrive grouped on a detector. This bunching characterises bosons from a non-coherent source. Fermions show an anti-bunching behaviour in the same conditions.By using metastable Helium atoms, that can be detected individually through the use of micro-channel plates, we have been able to show a similar bunching of bosons 4He from thermal sources around the microkelvin. As expected, the coherence of the Bose-Einstein condensates did not produce a particular correlation. The measurement on thermal gases of fermionic 3He has demonstrated the anti-bunching. Particular effort has been employed in describing the micro-channel plates based delay-line detector, the key to the experiment.; Cette thèse détaille la mesure des corrélations d'intensité quantiques dans des gaz d'hélium métastable. Ils avaient ainsi mis en évidence que les photons emis par une telle source arrivaient préférentiellement groupés sur le détecteur. Ce groupement charactérise les bosons provenant d'une source non-cohérente. Les fermions manifestent un anti-groupement dans les mêmes conditions.En utilisant des atomes d'hélium métastables, dont l'utilisation de galettes de micro-canuax facilite la détection individuelle, nous avons pu mettre en évidence un regroupement similaire des bosons 4He provenant de sources thermiques de l'ordre du microkelvin. La cohérence des condensats de Bose-Einstein n'a pas permis de dégager une corrélation particulière, comme attendue. Une mesure sur des gaz thermiques des fermions 3He a permis de mettre en évidence leur anti-groupement. Un soin particulier a été pris pour décrire le détecteur à base de galettes de microcanaux et de lignes à retard, une des clés de la réussite de la mesure.

We describe two-photon photoassociation (PA) experiments operated in an ultracold gas of metastable $^4$He$^*$ atoms in the $2^3S_1$ state. Atom-molecule dark resonances as well as Raman signals provide information on the exotic molecule in the least bound vibrational $J=2$, $v=14$ state of the $^5\Sigma_g^+$ interaction potential of two spin-polarized metastable atoms. The physical origin of the various two-photon PA signals is first discussed. Their linewidths are interpreted in term of processes limiting the lifetime $\tau$ of the exotic molecule. A value of $\tau=1.4\pm0.3~\mu$s is found, which is discussed in view of two recent calculations of the Penning ionization rate induced by spin-dipole coupling and of the atom-molecule inelastic collisions.

In 2001 metastable Helium (He*) attained Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC). The metastable state has a lifetime of 9000 sec and an internal energy of 20 eV. This energy can be used to detect individual atoms using a micro-channel plate. The extremely good time response and high gain of this detector makes it possible to carry out a density correlation measurement (HBT) with massive particles similar to the pioneering experiment of R. Hanbury Brown and R. Twiss in optics. In addition, inelastic collisions between He* atoms produce a small but detectable flux of ions proportional to the cloud's density. This allows one to follow the evolution of the cloud's density toward BEC, passing through the phase transition, in real time and in a non invasive way. In this dissertation we report on three different experiments: i) the determination of the two- and three-body ionizing rate constants of He*; ii) the determination of a, the He* scattering length; iii) the measure of the intensity correlation function of a falling He* cloud. It has been shown lately that our measure of a was affected by a large systematic error and we propose a possible explanation. We describe methods to determine the temperature and fugacity of a thermal cloud. Finally a major portion of the thesis is devoted to the derivation of an analytical expression for the intensity correlation function of the atomic flux. This theoretical analysis has derived typical values for the transverse and longitudinal atomic coherence length that confirmed the possibility of performing a HBT experiment with our apparatus.; En 2001, la condensation de Bose-Einstein (CBE) a été obtenue sur un gaz d'hélium métastable (He*). In the vicinity of Bose-Einstein condensation, the collisional properties of a dilute gas of metastable helium He∗ in the state 23 S1 are governed by the rate of ionizing Penning collisions and the s-wave scattering length a. Thus, we measured a by a 2-photon photoassociation experiment, which allows to create a molecule with two metastable atoms He∗ in the least bound state of the interaction potential between two metastable atoms which are spin polarized. The measure of this bound state using the atoms-molecules dark resonance allows to deduce the scattering length a, which is determined with a large accuracy (a = 7.5105 ± 0.0025 nm), and which depends not much on theory : it is a direct measurement. More ones, the lifetime of molecules formed by 2-photon spectroscopy is linked to Penning ionization between the two bound He∗ atoms. Its measurement allows to understand the mechanism of these collisions., Au voisinage de la condensation de Bose-Einstein, les propriétés collisionelles d'un gaz dilué d'hélium métastable He* dans l'état 23S1 sont gouvernées par les collisions auto-ionisantes de type Penning, et par la longueur de diffusion en onde s, notée "a". Nous avons mesuré "a" par photoassociation à deux photons formant une molécule contenant deux atomes métastables He* dans l'état le moins lié du potentiel d'interaction entre deux atomes métastables polarisés de spin. La mesure de l'énergie de liaison de cette molécule par résonance noire atomes-molécules permet d'en déduire la longueur de diffusion "a", que l'on a pu déterminer avec une grande précision (a = 7. 5105 ± 0.0025 nm), et qui ne dépend que très peu de la théorie : c'est donc une mesure directe. De plus, la durée de vie des molécules créées par spectroscopie à deux photons est liée à l'ionisation Penning entre les deux atomes He* qui la composent. Sa mesure permet de mieux comprendre le mécanisme de ce type de collisions.

We present an exhaustive analysis of the light-induced frequency shifts of the photoassociation lines of ultracold metastable 4He* atoms in a magnetic trap. The measurements of the shifts of several vibrational levels bound in the purely long-range J=1,0u+ potential linked to the 23S1-23P0 asymptote were reported in a previous paper and are analyzed here. The simplicity of this system makes it very appropriate for a detailed study. Indeed, the purely long-range character of the excited potential allows one to calculate exact excited molecular wavefunctions and to use asymptotic expansions at large internuclear distances of the ground state wavefunctions appearing in Franck-Condon type integrals. Moreover, the number of collisional channels to be considered is strongly reduced by the absence of hyperfine structure for 4He* and the use of polarized ultracold atoms and polarized light. This allows us to derive semi-analytical expressions for the shifts showing explicitly their linear dependences on the s-wave scattering length a of spin polarized metastable 4He* atoms. This thesis presents an experimental study of an atomic cloud in the vicinity of Bose-Einstein condensation. The atoms used in our experiment are special in the sense that they are metastable -- we use metastable helium. The metastability opens the door for using new and original detection methods. Due to their internal energy, the atoms can be detected electronically by means of a micro-channel plate. The use of metastable helium is also interesting due of the presence of ionizing collisions in the sample. The He+ ions produced in collisions between the metastable atoms can be detected in real-time, and the ion signal constitutes an alternative and useful diagnostic. In particular, this signal allows one to identify very precisely the Bose-Einstein condensation threshold. One of the advantages of using this signal to probe the cloud, is its ''non-invasive" nature: observing the ions does not at all alter the natural evolution of the cloud, in contrast to the ordinary detection technique which consists of releasing the atoms from the trap and then imaging the cloud. In this thesis, by using the new diagnostics based on the ion signal, we have measured some important parameters governing the collisions, and thereby the behavior of the cloud: the ionizing rate constants and the scattering length.; Cette thèse présente des résultats obtenus par des méthodes originales sur les nuages d'atomes ultra-froids au voisinage de la condensation de Bose-Einstein. Les atomes qui constituent les nuages utilisés dans ces expériences sont particuliers du fait de leur métastabilité. Plus précisément, ce sont des atomes d'hélium métastable. Grâce à l'énergie interne qu'ils possèdent, ces atomes peuvent être détectés électroniquement de façon efficace par une galette de micro-canaux. L'utilisation de l'hélium métastable pour l'étude de la dégénérescence quantique est également particulière du fait de la présence de collisions ionisantes au sein de l'échantillon atomique. Les ions He+ créés lors d'une collision inélastique peuvent être détectés ''en temps réel", ce qui constitue un diagnostic nouveau et intéressant. En particulier, il est possible d'identifier très précisément le seuil de condensation de Bose-Einstein, c'est-à-dire le moment où commencent à s'accumuler les atomes dans l'état quantique fondamental. L'avantage d'utiliser le taux d'ions comme outil d'observation est sa nature ''non-invasive". Contrairement à la technique d'observation habituelle qui exige que les atomes soient lâchés du piège pour permettre leur observation, la mesure du taux d'ions produits par l'échantillon ne change en rien le comportement naturel du nuage. En utilisant cette méthode de diagnostic originale, une mesure des paramètres collisionnels régissant le comportement du nuage a été obtenue : constantes de collisions ionisantes et longueur de diffusion de l'atome d'hélium métastable.

Large amounts of hyperpolarized 3He gas with high nuclear polarization rates are required for use in neutron spin filters or nuclear magnetic resonance imaging of human lung. Very high efficiency can be obtained by metastability exchange optical pumping using multimode lasers to excite the 23S-23P transition at 1083 nm. Broadband Ytterbium-doped tunable fiber lasers have been designed for that particular application. Different options for the architecture of the fiber oscillator are presented and compared. Emphasis is given to a linear cavity configuration that includes a high reflectivity fiber mirror and a low reflectivity tunable fiber Bragg grating. Optical measurements are performed to finely characterize the spectral behavior of the lasers. Atomic response is also quantitatively probed to assess the optimal design of the oscillator for optical pumping. Multimode operation matching the 2 GHz Doppler-broadened helium resonance line and tunability over more than 200 GHz are demonstrated. Boosting the output of this fiber laser with a Yb-doped fiber power amplifier, all-fiber devices are built to provide robust, high power turn-key sources at 1083 nm for improved production of laser polarized 3He., Comment: Submitted July 2003, published online December 2003 (http://www.springerlink.com).
