Since 2011, holopelagic Sargassum have been massively stranding in the coastal environments of the Caribbean Islands inducing damages to coastal ecosystems, public health and the economy. To limit the risks associated with Sargassum stranding, floating barriers with nets can be placed in front of sensitive areas, to divert Sargassum away from the coast. To evaluate the potential transfer of metallic trace element (MTE) from Sargassum to adjacent marine life, seagrasses (Halophila stipulacea, Thalassia testidinum) and urchin (Lytechinus variegatus) were sampled, both close (0 m) and far (200 m) from barriers installed during 4 years in two bays: Baie Cayol (BC) and Cap Est (CE) in Martinique (FWI). A bay without barriers Baie-Tresor (BT) was also sampled in order to compare the effects of Sargassum accumulated in a natural environment versus an environment with floating barriers. The short-term effects of barriers were evaluated by measuring the evolution of MTE after four days, in the algae (Dictyota spp.), located close to Sargassum accumulations. All sampling was realized during two periods of active (July 2021) and reduced (January 2022) Sargassum stranding. The measured concentrations of 19 metal(loid)s trace elements revealed that the proximity of Sargassum to the barriers did not increase MTE concentration. The absence of increase in MTE was observed all sites (BT, BC and CE) and during periods of limited and important Sargassum stranding. Similarly, translocations of Dictyota close to Sargassum accumulations did not reveal any increase in MTE concentrations in the algae after 4 days. The study was conducted in Cerritos, San Luis Potosí, México, near the Guaxcama mine, focused on environmental contamination (groundwater and agricultural soil) from antimony (Sb), arsenic (As), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and mercury (Hg). In March 2022, 20 agricultural soil and 16 groundwater samples were collected near the historically cinnabar (HgS)- and arsenopyrite (FeAsS)-rich Guaxcama mine. Hydride generation atomic fluorescence spectrometry (HG-AFS) for As, cold vapor atomic fluorescence spectrometry (CV-AFS) for Hg, and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) for Cd, Pb, and Sb were used for the determinations of potentially toxic elements (PTEs). While concentrations of Cd, Hg, Pb, and Sb in groundwater were below detection limits, As levels exhibited a range from 40.9 ± 1.4 to 576.0 ± 1.0 µg/L, exceeding permissible limits for drinking water (10 µg/L). In agricultural soil, As was between 7.67 ± 0.16 and 24.1 ± 0.4 µg/g, Hg ranged from 0.203 ± 0.018 to 2.33 ± 0.19 µg/g, Cd from 2.53 ± 0.90 to 2.78 ± 0.01 µg/g, and Pb from 11.7 ± 1.2 to 34.3 ± 4.1 µg/g. Only one study area surpassed the Mexican As soil limit of 22 µg/g. Sequential extraction (four-step BCR procedure) indicated significant As bioavailability in soil (fractions 1 and 2) ranging from 3.66 to 10.36%, heightening the risk of crop transfer, in contrast to the low bioavailability of Hg, showing that fractions 1, 2, and 3 were below the limit of quantification (LOQ). Crucial physicochemical parameters in soil, including nitrate levels, pH, and organic matter, were pivotal in understanding contamination dynamics. Principal component analysis highlighted the influence of elements like Fe and Ca on phytoavailable As, while Pb and Cd likely originated from a common source. Ecological risk assessments underscored the significant impact of pollution, primarily due to the concentrations of Cd and Hg. Non-cancer and cancer risks to residents through As poisoning via contaminated water ingestion also were found. The hazard index (HI) values varied between 4.0 and 82.2 for adults and children. The total incremental lifetime cancer risk (TILCAR) values for adults ranged from 7.75E − 04 to 1.06E − 02, whereas for children, the values were from 2.47E − 04 to 3.17E − 03. Male-male competition is a component of Darwin's theory of precopulatory intrasexual selection, where males compete for access to resources important for reproduction and successful males pass on traits that endow greater competitive ability to their offspring, thereby exaggerating the trait(s) over evolutionary time. Metals, such as lead (Pb) often occur in urban mangrove forests, where shore crabs reside, and being neurotoxic may cause sub-lethal effects on behaviour. In this study, we asked whether exposure to Pb influences the outcomes of male-male competition in the Semaphore crab, Heloecius cordiformis, thereby altering outcomes of intrasexual selection. Crabs were exposed to an environmentally relevant, and a behaviourally relevant, concentration of lead (i.e. Pb, 10 µg/L and 100 µg/L respectively) under laboratory conditions for 96 h and subsequently allowed to compete for burrow ownership in experimental arenas. Exposed crabs (100 µg/L) were less successful than control crabs in chela size-matched paired competitive interactions, spent less time in burrows and predominantly lost burrow ownership. Further, exposure to Pb contamination (both 10 µg/L and 100 µg/L) negated the chela size advantage in size-asymmetric competitive interactions. This contaminant-induced loss of size-related competitive advantage may result in relaxation in selection pressure on body size and smaller male carapace widths and especially male chela lengths in contaminated locations. Heavy metal contamination in soils and vegetation poses a significant problem due to its toxicity and persistence. Toxic effects on vegetation include not only impaired growth, reduced yields, and even plant death but also biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation. Addressing this issue requires comprehensive monitoring and remediation efforts to mitigate the environmental, human health, and ecological impacts. This review examines the state-of-the-art methodologies and advancements in remote sensing applications for detecting and monitoring heavy metal contamination in soil and its subsequent effects on vegetation. By synthesizing the current research findings and technological developments, this review offers insights into the efficacy and potential of remote sensing for monitoring heavy metal contamination in terrestrial ecosystems. However, current studies focus on regression and AI methods to link spectral reflectances and indices to heavy metal concentrations, which poses limited transferability to other areas, times, spectral discretizations, and heavy metal elements. We conclude that one important way forward is the more thorough understanding and simulation of the related physico-chemical processes in soils and plants and their effects on the spectral signatures. This would offer a profound basis for remote sensing applications for individual circumstances and would allow disentangling heavy metal effects from other stressors such as droughts or soil salinity. The estrogen receptor alpha (ERa) plays a central role in the etiology, progression, and treatment of breast cancers. Constitutively activating somatic mutations Y537S and D538G, in the ligand binding domain (LBD) of ESR1, are associated with acquired resistance to endocrine therapies. We have previously shown that the metalloestrogen calcium activates ERa through an interaction with the LBD of the receptor. This study shows that cadmium activates ERa through a mechanism similar to calcium and contributes to, and further increases, the constitutive activity of the ERa mutants Y537S and D538G. Mutational analysis identified C381, N532A, H516A/N519A/E523A, and E542/ D545A on the solvent accessible surface of the LBD as possible calcium/metal interaction sites. In contrast to estradiol, which did not increase the activity of the Y537S and D538G mutants, cadmium increased the activity of the constitutive mutants. Mutation of the calcium/metal interaction sites in Y537S and D538G mutants resulted in a significant decrease in constitutive activity and cadmium induced activity. Mutation of calcium/metal interaction sites in wtERa diminished binding of the receptor to the enhancer of estrogen responsive genes and the binding of nuclear receptor coactivator 1 and RNA polymerase II. In contrast to wtERa, mutation of the calcium/metal interaction sites in the Y537S and D538G mutants did not diminish binding to DNA but prevented a stable interaction with the coactivator and polymerase. Growth assays further revealed that calcium channel blockers and chelators significantly decreased the growth of MCF7 cells expressing these constitutively active mutants. Taken together, the results suggest that exposure to cadmium plays a role in the etiology, progression, and response to treatment of breast cancer due, in part, to its ability to activate ERa. This study integrated hydrochemical analysis, isotopic analysis, the integrated water quality index (IWQI), and the health risk assessment model to analyze hydrochemical characteristics, quality, and nitrate health risks in a typical agricultural and industrial (i.e., Holocene and Pleistocene) simultaneously affected by anthropogenic activities, as well as to explore the recharge mechanisms of the groundwater. The shallow groundwater is mainly Ca-HCO3− and deep groundwater is mainly Na-HCO3− types. In shallow and intermediate aquifers (Holocene), rainfall recharge is seen, but in deep aquifers (Holocene) and the Madhupur tract (Pleistocene), there is no evidence of recent recharge from the stable isotopic (δ2H‰ and δ18O‰) composition of groundwater. Anthropogenic sources significantly impacted the groundwater chemistry of shallow and intermediate aquifers more than geogenic sources. Most metalloids, and metals (As, and Cr, Fe, Ni, Pb, and Mn) and NO3− exceed the WHO-2011 and BD acceptable limit from shallow and intermediate groundwater. PCA analysis revealed the contamination of shallow and intermediate aquifers by metalloids, metals and from various anthropogenic activities. Based on the IWQI, HPI, HEI, and DC, groundwater samples from shallow and intermediate aquifers are unsuitable for oral consumption. The NPI shows that the metalloids, and metals are responsible for groundwater pollution in a descending order of As > Fe > Pb > Ni > Cr > Mn. Health risk assessment indicates oral and dermal consumption of contaminated water from shallow and intermediate aquifers can pose carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health risks for both the adults and the children. The HQ and HI values of shallow and intermediate groundwater indicates higher non-carcinogenic risk. Carcinogenic risk through oral and dermal consumption follows an order of As > Ni > Cr > Pb and Ni > Cr > As > Pb, respectively. Compared to adults, children are more susceptible to both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks. A study was conducted to assess the sources of metals and other elements considered as pollutants and their relationship with general characteristics of the soils in the area of Aurubis-Pirdop copper smelter and refinery. In the early spring of 2023, soil samples were taken from the surface horizon (0-20 cm) of Alluvial-deluvial soils (Fluvisols) and Cinnamon Forest soils (Chromic Luvisols). The studied soils possess light texture, low content of clay 5.7-14.7% and vary in organic carbon (OC) from 0.5-2.9%. We observed exceeding of the maximum permissible levels (MPL) for the metals Cu, Pb and the metalloid As, and elevated contents for Mn, B and Se. Several groups of elements were distinguished on the basis of principal component and cluster analysis (PCA and CA). The metals Cu, Mg, Mo, Pb, Zn, Hg and the elements As, Se and Na were of anthropogenic origin and had elevated concentrations in the surface soils, especially Cu, Pb and As. The group of elements Al, Ba, Co, Cr, Fe, Mn, together with the % clay were of litho-pedogenic origin and revealed their belonging to the crystal lattice of the secondary soil minerals. The third, fourth and the fifth groups included B, Li, Mg, Ni, Mn and Na, mainly elements present as accessory components in soil minerals which have both anthropogenic and/or litho-pedogenic origin. Background: Major depressive disorder (MDD) pathogenesis may involve metalloids in a significant way. The aim of our study was to identify potential links between MDD and metalloid elements [boron (B), germanium (Ge), arsenic (As), antimony (Sb)]. Methods: A total of 72 MDD cases and 75 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited from Zhumadian Second People's Hospital in Henan Province, China. The levels of four metallic elements (B, Ge, As, and Sb) in the serum and urine were measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Results: In comparison to the HCs, the B, As, and Sb levels were considerably lower in the MDD group (p < 0.05) in the serum; the MDD group had significantly higher (p < 0.05) and significantly lower (p < 0.001) B and Sb levels in the urine. After adjusting for potential confounders, serum B (OR = 0.120; 95% CI, 0.048, 0.300; p < 0.001) and Sb (OR = 0.133; 95% CI, 0.055, 0.322; p < 0.001) showed a negative correlation with MDD. Urine B had a negative correlation (OR = 0.393; 95% CI, 0.193, 0.801; p = 0.01) with MDD, while urine Sb had a positive correlation (OR = 3.335; 95% CI, 1.654, 6.726; p = 0.001) with MDD. Sugarcane production has been linked to the release of heavy metals and metalloids (HM/MTs) into the environment, raising concerns about potential health risks. This study aimed to assess the levels of 19 HM/MTs in children living near a sugarcane mill through a pilot biomonitoring investigation. We investigated sex-related differences in these element levels and their correlations. A cross-sectional study was conducted, analyzing data from 20 children in the latter part of 2023. Spearman correlation coefficients with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to assess the relationships between urinary HM/MT levels. Detectable levels of 17 out of the 19 HM/MTs were found across the entire study sample, with arsenic and copper detectable in 95% of the children. Titanium exhibited higher levels in boys compared to girls ( p = 0.017). We identified 56 statistically significant correlations, with 51 of them being positive, while the remaining coefficients indicated negative relationships. This study characterized HM/MT levels in school-aged children residing near a sugarcane mill through a pilot biomonitoring investigation. Further research employing larger sample sizes and longitudinal assessments would enhance our understanding of the dynamics and health impacts of HM/MT exposure in this vulnerable population. Background: Industrial growth and population expansion have led to increasing contamination of soils and plants by metals and metalloids. Toxic elements such as lead, cadmium, and arsenic persist in the environment, presenting significant risks to both ecosystems and human health. This editorial introduces the Virtual Special Issue, which compiles recent studies on the infiltration of these contaminants into soils and their bioaccumulation in plants. Objectives: This special issue aims to explore the interaction between human activities and metal/metalloid contamination, highlight key bioaccumulation mechanisms, transfer dynamics, and assess the risks posed to human health by contaminated soils and plants. Methods: The contributions to this issue include a variety of methodologies, both in laboratory and field settings, such as soil contamination assessments, bioaccumulation studies in plant species, and risk estimations for human exposure. Results: The compiled studies demonstrate significant contamination levels in soils and plants, especially in regions of Africa and Asia, where cadmium, mercury, zinc, and arsenic frequently exceed safety guidelines. These findings emphasize the urgent need for stricter contamination controls and further investigation in underrepresented regions. Conclusion: This issue provides crucial insights into metal and metalloid contamination in agricultural systems, offering evidence that can inform environmental policies and support the development of sustainable agricultural practices to mitigate contamination risks.

Ultrafast laser pump-probe spectroscopy is an important and growing field of physical chemistry that allows the measurement of chemical dynamics on their natural time scales, but undergraduate laboratory courses lack examples of such spectroscopy and the interpretation of the dynamics that occur. Here we develop and implement an ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy experiment for the undergraduate physical chemistry laboratory course at the University of California Berkeley. The goal of the experiment is to expose students to concepts in solid-state chemistry and ultrafast spectroscopy via classic coherent phonon dynamics principles developed by researchers over multiple decades. The experiment utilizes a modern high-repetition-rate 800 nm femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser, split pulses with a variable time delay, and sensitive detection of transient reflectivity signals using the lock-in technique. The experiment involves minimal intervention from students and is therefore easy and safe to implement in the laboratory. Students first perform an intensity autocorrelation measurement on the femtosecond laser pulses to obtain their temporal duration. Then, students measure the pump-probe reflectivity of a single-crystal antimony sample to determine the period of coherent phonon oscillations initiated by an ultrafast pulse excitation, which is analyzed by fitting to a sine wave. Students who completed the experiment in-person obtained good experimental results, and students who took the course remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic were provided with the data they would have obtained during the experiment to analyze. Evaluation of student written and oral reports reveals that the learning goals were met, and that students gained an appreciation for the field of ultrafast laser-induced chemistry.

Summary: Optimizing agroecosystems and crops for micronutrient uptake while reducing issues with inorganic contaminants (metal(loid)s) is a challenging task. One promising approach is to use arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and investigate the physiological, molecular and epigenetic changes that occur in their presence and that lead to changes in plant metal(loid) concentration (biofortification of micronutrients or mitigation of contaminants). Moreover, it is important to understand these mechanisms in the context of the soil microbiome, particularly those interactions of AMF with other soil microbes that can further shape crop nutrition. To address these challenges, a two‐pronged approach is recommended: exploring molecular mechanisms and investigating microbiome management and engineering. This study examined the sorption of heavy metals in selected soils (e.g., Andosol, Cambisol, Planosol) in Slovakia, focusing on the kind and quantity of humic materials as well as the soil's characteristics. Heavy metals were detected using GT AAS, while UV-Vis spectroscopy was used to determine humic substances' colour quotients. The impact of the total organic carbon on the total cadmium, bioavailable lead, and cadmium was highlighted. The results reveal positive correlations among humic substances and bioavailable forms of Cd (r = 0.692) and Pb (r = 0.709). A relationship was discovered between FAs and the bioavailable forms of Pb (r = 0.743) and Cd (r = 0.700) and between the level of HSs and the bioavailable content of Cd (r = 0.499). Bioavailable heavy metals showed a positive correlation with clay fraction and a negative correlation with heavy metal content. Correlations were found between the bioavailable heavy metal forms and the colour quotients of humic substances and humic acids. Heavy metals in bioavailable forms decreased with the levels of the condensation and dispersion of humic substances. From clay to silt, the amounts of Cd and Pb increased. During migration, birds explore various habitats at stopover sites that differ in food resources and contamination levels. In this study, hepatic concentrations of 21 elements (metals and metalloids) in 11 species of birds, representing various foraging habitats (such as aquatic, aquatic/terrestrial, and terrestrial) and migration modes (migratory and sedentary) representing various foraging guilds (omnivores, piscivores, and molluscivores), were analyzed. The samples (N = 84) were collected during the autumn migration period in Poland. The concentrations of elements determined in this study exhibited high inter-species variability, reflecting the diversity in contamination levels depending on food resources used by specific bird groups. Many of the investigated individuals from different species showed exceeded levels of subclinical toxicity and moderate clinical poisoning due to Cd and Hg. Higher concentrations of As, Hg, and Ba and lower V concentrations were found in migratory birds as compared to sedentary birds. Species foraging in terrestrial habitat had different concentrations of some elements compared to aquatic and aquatic/terrestrial species. Some specific inter-species differences in hepatic elemental concentrations were found. Differences in elemental concentrations among various groups can primarily be attributed to their foraging guilds, with certain elements, particularly As, V, and Hg, playing a significant role in the dissimilarity of elemental concentrations between foraging habitat groups and migratory mode groups. The data collected confirmed the limited ability of As to enter ecosystem pathways. The results of this study contribute to understanding the year-round exposure of migratory birds to environmental contamination, which can have carry-over effects on their performance in wintering and breeding grounds. Biological characteristics of pregnant women during early pregnancy make them susceptible to both poor sleep quality and metal/metalloid exposure. However, the effects of metal(loid) exposure on sleep quality in pregnant women remain unknown and unexplored. We aimed to examine the relationship between exposure to a mixture of metal(loid)s and pregnant women’s sleep quality during early pregnancy. We recruited 493 pregnant women in the first trimester from prenatal clinics in Jinan, Shandong Province, China, and collected their spot urine samples. All urine specimens were assessed for eight metal(loid)s: arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), molybdenum (Mo), lead (Pb), selenium (Se), and mercury (Hg). We used the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) to assess sleep quality. Linear regression, logistic regression, generalized additive models (GAMs), quantile g-computation, and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) were applied to investigate the relationships between metal(loid) exposure and sleep quality. The results from single metal(loid) models, quantile g-computation models, and BKMR models consistently suggested that Fe was positively related to women’s sleep quality. Moreover, in the quantile g-computation models, As was the most critical contributor to the negative effects of the metal(loid) mixture on sleep quality. In addition, we found significant As by Fe interaction for scores of PSQI and habitual sleep efficiency, Pb by Fe interaction for PSQI and sleep latency, and Hg by Fe interaction for PSQI, suggesting the interactive effects of As and Fe, Pb and Fe, Hg and Fe on sleep quality and specific sleep components. Our study provided the first-hand evidence of the effects of metal(loid) exposure on pregnant women’s sleep quality. The underlying mechanisms need to be explored in the future.

Cattle ranching is a fundamental economic activity in northern Peru, where proper management of water resources is crucial. This study, a pioneer in the region, evaluated water quality and its suitability for human consumption, vegetable irrigation, and livestock production. It is also the first study to document the presence of metals and metalloids in vulnerable areas because they are located at the headwaters of river watersheds. The spatiotemporal evaluation of physicochemical parameters, metals, and metalloids was performed in five micro-watersheds (Cabildo, Timbambo, Pomacochas, Atuen, and Ventilla) from water samples collected in the dry season (October 2017) and wet season (March 2018). The parameters were analyzed using microwave plasma atomic emission spectrometry. The results were contrasted with international and Peruvian quality standards related to dairy cow production. The highest values of pH, total dissolved solids, and electrical conductivity were reported during the dry season, and the highest turbidity during the wet season. Of the metals evaluated, arsenic (As) was omnipresent in all the micro-watersheds, followed by lead (Pb).In contrast to World Health Organization regulations, concentrations of As, cadmium (Cd), Pb, and iron represent a risk; according to Peruvian regulations, As and Pb exceed the concentrations established for use in animal drinking water and vegetable irrigation, and according to water guidelines for dairy cattle, concentrations of As, Pb, Cd, and Al exceed the permitted limits. The high concentrations of these metals in the study area are attributable to a synergy between natural factors, such as Andean geology and livestock activity. The data reported will allow for proper water resource management, pollution prevention, and the design and adoption of mitigation measures.

Abstract Worldwide wastewater treatment plants generate enormous amounts of sewage sludge, and their further disposal depends on the treatment technologies applied and spontaneously occurring microbiological processes. From different ages urban sewage sludge, 12 strains of bacteria with simultaneous tolerance to two or more trace elements: Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb at concentration of 3-5 mmol were isolated and identified by PCR of target genes and Sanger sequencing methods. The isloated metal(loids) tolerant strains belong to the species, i.e., Serratia fonticola, Rhodococcus qingshengii, Pseudomonas fragi, Pseudomonas extremaustralis, Pseudomonas cedrina, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, Serratia liquefaciens and Citrobacter freundii. The ecological features of the isolated strains were studied. The optimal growth temperatures for most strains was 15–30°C at pH range of 5–9, although some strains grew at 7°C (Pseudomonas fragi SS0-4, Serratia fonticola SS0-9 and Serratia fonticola SS12-11). Satisfactory growth of two strains (Serratia fonticola SS0-1and Citrobacter freundii SS60-12) was noted in an acidic medium at pH 4. Most of the strains grew in the NaCl concentration range of 1–5%. The isolated bacteria resistant to high concentrations of trace elements can be used for the effective mineralization of sewage sludge and for the decontamination of wastewater.

Understanding geochemical zoning, including major components, minor components, and trace elements, in ore deposits can significantly improve Au exploration. Therefore, in this study, we focus on the geochemical characteristics of ore and alteration zones in the largest low-sulfidation (LS) epithermal Au–Ag deposit in Thailand, namely Chatree deposit. The occurrence of metal and metalloids can be distinguished into three groups: (1) major components in ore minerals (e.g., As, Cu, Fe, Pb, Sb, and Zn), (2) trace elements in ore minerals (e.g., As, Cd, Hg, and Mn), and (3) trace elements in gangue minerals (e.g., Mn). This study suggests that the ore minerals of a shallow system of the epithermal LS deposit are enriched in As, Sb, and Hg compared to the deeper system. Hydrothermal alteration leads to enrichment of K2O and depletion of Na2O and CaO. Besides major oxides, some low-field strength elements (e.g., Rb, and Ba) show the same behavior as K2O, whereas Sr is similar to CaO. In addition, positive Eu anomalies are associated with hydrothermal alteration. For metals and metalloids, arsenic is an important pathfinder element because its content is associated with the electrum occurrence and significantly increases toward the ore zone. Mn, Pb, and Cd are prominent in the ore zone; whereas, Ti, Al, and Cr decrease toward the ore zone due to dilution from silicification. Furthermore, even though the concentrations of As, Cd, Cr, Pb, and Ni in the ore and alteration zones are lower than Thailand's Total Threshold Limit Concentration (TTLC) for waste, the mine should still implement critical monitoring of these elements. This study evaluated the cardiopulmonary protective effects of essential elements (Zn and Se) against heavy metals mixture (HMM) exposure. Twenty five female Sprague Dawley albino rats, divided in to five groups: controls were orally treated only with distilled water; next, group 2 was exposed to HMM with the following concentrations: 20 mg/kg of Pb body weight, 0.40 mg/kg of Hg, 0.56 mg/kg of Mn, and 35 mg/kg of Al. Groups 3, 4 and 5 were exposed to HMM and co-treated with zinc chloride (ZnCl2; 0.80 mg/kg), sodium selenite (Na2SeO3;1.50 mg/kg) and both zinc chloride and sodium selenite, respectively. The experiment lasted for 60 days. Afterwards animals were sacrificed, and we conduced biochemical and histopathological examination of the heart and lungs. HMM only exposed animals had an increased levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and nitric oxide (NO), increased IL-6 and TNF-α, attenuated SOD, GPx, CAT and GSH and caspase 3 in the heart and lungs. HMM affected NF-kB and Nrf2 in the heart muscle with histomorphological alterations. Zn and Se attenuated adverse effects of HMM exposure. Cancer is one of the leading causes of human death among all major diseases. Metal-based complexes are considered as the most promising vital part in the existing arsenal of cytotoxic candidates used in cancer therapy and diagnostics. The efforts of many scientific groups resulted in the development of numerous metal-based compounds featuring different biologically active organic ligands in order to modulate their bioactivity. Along with the main representatives as potential therapeutic agents, such as the complexes Pt(II)/Pt(IV), Pd(II), Ru(II)/Ru(III), Ag(I), Au(I)/Au(III), Ti(IV), V(IV) and Ga(III), many other transition metal and lanthanide complexes possessing antiproliferative activity are widely discussed in the literature. However, such drugs remain outside the scope of this review. The main purpose of the current study is to review the potential activity of main group metal- and metalloid-based complexes against the most common cancer cell types, such as carcinomas (lung, liver, breast, kidney, gastric, colorectal, bladder, ovarian, cervical, prostate, etc.); sarcomas; blastomas; lymphomas; multiple myeloma; and melanoma. Overcoming the long disregard of organometallic compounds of metals and metalloids from the main groups, a growing number of emerging anticancer agents remarkably prove this field offers an extensive variety of new options for the design of innovative unexplored chemopharmaceutics. Moreover, some of the metal complexes and organometallic compounds from these elements can exhibit entirely different, specific modes of action and biological targets. Alteration of wet and dry periods affects soil geochemical properties that drive contaminant availability and mobility. Consequently, the efficiency of soil remediation may vary, and thus soil management needs to consider these variations. This study reveals the effect of soil moisture manipulation on the behaviour of the toxic metalloids antimony (Sb) and arsenic (As) and the immobilisation efficiency of nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI), biochar (BC) and BC modified by iron or iron/ferrous sulphide (nZVI-BC and Fe/FeS-BC). Soil samples from an abandoned Sb mining site were tested under laboratory conditions. Two distinct (organic and mineral) soil layers were incubated with each of the amendments (2% w/w application rate) at 50% and 100% water holding capacity (WHC) of the soils for 10 weeks, and subsequently extracted with demineralised water and rainwater. The immobilisation efficiency of the tested amendments was significantly influenced by the different soil moisture regimes and type of contaminant. Sorption onto secondary Fe minerals was the dominant Sb/As immobilizing mechanism. The iron-based amendments showed up to 97% efficiency for Sb and up to 96% for As. However, Sb/As release was generally higher at 100% WHC and in the rainwater extracts compared to the other conditions, indicating that heavy rainfall and flooding of soils in-situ may increase contaminant availability and mobility. In the organic layer, enhanced formation and leaching of metalloid-DOC complexes and sorption competition of the negatively charged Sb/As species and DOC can be expected. Also, reductive dissolution of Sb or As-bearing metal oxides could lead to the observed higher Sb/As release under flooded conditions, resulting in exacerbated environmental and health risks. Therefore, it is crucial to (1) improve the sorption characteristics of the tested amendments and/or develop other effective amendments for Sb/As immobilisation in different water regimes in soil; (2) test the amendments under real field conditions to evaluate the long term wet/dry exposure; and (3) develop proper risk assessment and soil remediation strategy for the study area and similar sites. Developed areas of the coal industry are subjected to long-term anthropogenic impacts from the input and accumulation of overburdened coal material, containing potentially toxic heavy metals and metalloids (HMM). For the first time, comprehensive studies of soils and plants in the territory of the Donetsk coal basin were carried out using X-ray fluorescence, atomic absorption analysis, and electron microscopy. The observed changes in the soil redox conditions were characterized by a high sulfur content, and formations of new microphases of S-containing compounds: FeS2, PbFe6(SO4)4(OH)12, ZnSO4·nH2O, revealed the presence of technogenic salinization, increased Сorg content, and low pH contents. Exceedances of soil maximum permissible concentrations of Pb, Zn, Cu, and As in areas affected by coal dumps were apparent. As a consequence of long-term transformation of the environment with changes in properties and chemical pollution, a phytotoxic effect was revealed in Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud, accompanied by changes in ultrastructural and organization features of roots and leaves such as increases in root diameters and thickness of leaf blades. The changes in the ultrastructure of cell organelles: a violation of the grana formation process, an increase in the number of plastoglobules, a decrease in the number of mitochondrial cristae, and a reduction in the electron density of the matrix in peroxisomes were also observed. The accumulation of large electron-dense inclusions and membrane fragments in cell vacuoles was observed. Such ultrastructural changes may indicate the existence of a P. australis ecotype due to its long-term adaptation to the disturbed environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Hypersaline environments are extremely vulnerable and important ecological niches. Because much knowledge has focused on the distribution of heavy metals in these areas, the detailed behavior of key major elements in hypersaline environments has not been elucidated in detail. This research aims to define the distribution, translocation pathways, and mobility patterns of the major elements in hypersaline sediments and halophytes. Materials and methods: Samples of Sarcocornia fruticosa plants were collected from evaporation (ES) and crystallization (CA) sites in the Sečovlje Salina area (Republic of Slovenia). The major element contents were measured by digestion in HNO3 then aqua regia and analyzed by ICP-MS for ultra-low detection limits. Rhizo-sediments from EA and CA were processed using sequential extraction analysis to determine the precise fractionation of Al, Ca, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, and Na. To determine the translocation patterns of individual major elements in S. fruticosa, two indices were calculated: bioconcentration (BCF) and translocation factor (TF). Differences and similarities between samples and elements were highlighted using Statistica VII and Grapher 8 statistical software and Ward's method, respectively. Results and discussion: The obtained results confirmed that halophyte plants take up large amounts of the essential micronutrient Na due to high salinity, and that macronutrients (Ca, Mg, P, and S) are intensively translocated from the roots to the upper parts of the plant. The overall trend in translocation signature for major elements, distinguished by BCF and TF factor calculations, emphasizes that root tissues accumulate a significant amount of major elements and that accumulation depends on individual major elements. It also showed that the major elements Ca, Mg, Na, P, and S are highly translocated within plants, while the mobility of Al, Fe, and K is limited. Conclusions: Our results suggest that the major elements are vital macronutrients for halophytes, but their accumulation in the roots and further translocation within the plant depend on individual elements and their dynamics. The translocation pattern of the major elements can be justified as follows: Ca is an essential element for plant growth, maintenance, and membrane integrity; Mg is a specific component of chlorophyll; Na is present because of the hypersaline environment; P is a key component of plant metabolic processes; S represents an important component of enzymes and other key proteins; Al and Fe are preferentially accumulated in roots; and plant leaves are generally undersupplied with K. Purpose: The levels of metal(loid)s at the beginning of the coastal pelagic food web, providing an insight into accumulation in the suspended particulate matter (SPM) and size-fractionated plankton, were studied in the shallow coastal marine environment of the Gulf of Trieste (northern Adriatic Sea) affected by the metal polluted Isonzo/Soča River as a result of historical Hg, and Pb and Zn mining activities in the hinterland. Materials and methods: Levels of metal(loid)s were investigated in suspended particulate matter (0.45–20 µm) and fractionated plankton (20–50 µm, 50–200 µm, > 200 µm) collected monthly at the Marine Biology Station oceanographic buoy Vida in the southern part of the Gulf of Trieste. Results and discussion: Concentrations of meta(loid)s showed the following order Al,Fe > Zn,Mn > Ni > Cu,Cr > As,Pb,V > Co > Se > Cd > U > Hg and were similar to those of dissolved metal(loid)s of the gulf waters (Al,Fe > Zn > Cu > V > Mn > As > Ni,Se > U,Cr > Cd > Hg) where Hg, Cu, Cr and Se were significantly associated with colloidal organic matter (< 0.2 µm, > 5 kDa). The partition of metal(loid)s between their particulate phase and free ion and inorganic complexes in the water (Kpd) confirmed a strong binding of Hg, Al, Mn, Fe, Cr and Pb onto seawater particles. In general, the metal(loid) data for SPM and plankton showed high levels in the 50–200 µm microplankton fraction. Larger plankton fractions, especially > 200 µm, contain a lower amount of metal(loid)s associated with mineral particles originating from sedimentary pelite resuspension and riverine inflows. Variations of metal(loid)s levels in SPM and plankton fractions were related to their biomass (ash free dry weight—AFDW) and organic matter, and mineral (inorganic) content, which is difficult to separate from biogenic particles including organisms, and to the taxonomic composition and feeding behaviour of organisms in various fractions. Conclusions: The Redfield's stoichiometric concept including metal(loid)s in the coastal marine plankton (SPM and mesozooplankton) appears unreliable. The bioconcentration factors (log BCFs) of the studied metal(loid)s, ranging between 4 and 6 for Hg, Fe, Mn, Cr, Pb, Co, Zn, Ni, As, Cu and V and lower for Se and U both in micro- and mesoplankton, can possibly be used in micro- and especially in mesoplankton fraction less impacted by mineral metal(loid)s. This should be considered when establishing the metal(loid)s levels at the base of the coastal and estuarine food webs, at the onset of marine bioaccumulation, to provide information for marine organisms consumed by humans. Extreme hot conditions during summers, high poverty rate and continuous electricity load shedding affect commercial manufacturing and sale of ice in many countries. The vendors prepared ice using untreated piped water, tanker water and ground water. These waters may contain hazardous pollutants and ice made from them will pose a potential human health risk. Thus, it is important to regularly monitor the chemical composition of water sources and the quality of the manufactured ice. A contemporary examination was carried out to evaluate the physico-chemical properties and heavy metals and metalloids in the ice sold in all the districts of Karachi, Pakistan. This pioneering study was an innovative effort to assess the ice quality in relation to potential pollutant hazards to human health; with concomitant geospatial information. The geospatial distribution of ice quality and major constituents were among the measured parameters; carefully associated with further geospatial information, determined using GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and PCA (Principal Component Analysis) techniques. Interestingly, the physico-chemical analyses revealed that the ice quality was marginally adequate and the total mean metal-metalloid contents were in the sequence of Pb > Ni > Zn > Fe > Cr > As. The concentrations of these metals were above the upper allowable limits with reference to the recommended WHO guidelines. We observed that 57.1% and 35.7% ice samples had good physico-chemical properties assessed using the Ice Quality Index (IQI). Conversely, the IQI for metals showed that the ice was unsafe for human consumption. In terms of health risk assessment, the overall mean CDI (Chronic Daily Intake) and HQ (Hazard Quotient) values were in the order of Pb () > Ni (3.2) > Zn (2.3) > Fe (2.1) > Cr (1.6) > As (0.5) and Pb (7.4) > As (1.7) > Cr (0.5) > Ni (0.4 > Zn (0.008) > Fe (0.003), respectively. This study highlighted that routine monitoring of the water supplies available for making ice is required to protect public health.

Relevance. The need to study the ecological state of the soil cover of industrial cities, which is the main depositing environment for technogenic emissions of heavy metals and metalloids, to identify the geochemical characteristics of the region and assess the impact on public health. Aim. To assess the sources and accumulation of heavy metals and metalloids in soils and their fraction PM10 in Severobaikalsk and to assess the risks associated with them for public health. Methods. Total content of Zn, As, Cd, Pb, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Sb, Mo, V, W, Sr, Bi in soil, coal and ash samples was determined by mass spectral and atomic emission methods with inductive-coupled plasma. Geochemical (KK, Kc, Zc), sanitary and hygienic (Ko) indicators were used. Health risks for adults and children were assessed. Principal component analysis was used. Results. In Severobaikalsk, the priority soil pollutants are Sb, Cu, Pb, Mo, Cr. The soils and their PM10 fraction in the transport zone, where Sb, Cu, Pb, Co, V, W, Ni are accumulated, are the most polluted. The greatest influence on the chemical composition of urban soils and PM10 particles is exerted by emissions from railway infrastructure and coal combustion at the Central Thermal Power Plant (22% for soils in general and 48% for the PM10 fraction). The average total level of contamination of urban soils and PM10 fraction corresponds to a low, non-hazardous level (Zc=6). The total non-carcinogenic risk of soil particles contaminated with heavy metals and metalloids. entering the body of children, exceeded the safe level 1 (from 1.60 in a residential one-story zone to 1.81 in a transport zone). For the adult population, HI values were below the acceptable threshold value. For adult health, there is no carcinogenic risk associated with ingestion or skin contact of As, Cr and Pb. For children, a dangerous risk (ILCRingest 5.56*10–4) of ingestion of carcinogenic heavy metals and metalloids was identified.

Establishing the role of woody species as an instrument for heavy metal bioaccumulation is a relevant issue today in the context of the development of the phytoremediation system. The article presents the results of studies on the influence of different Arsenic (As) concentrations in soil on the development of aboveground biomass in Betula pendula Roth. and Populus tremula L. stands under conditions of reclamation plantings. The studies were conducted in 30 locations of birch and poplar tree plantations within the ore-producing regions of Saxony (Eastern Germany) in soil with different levels of As contamination. The highest As content was noted in the technosoil of the Davidschacht site, where the metalloid content was 229.3 times greater compared with a value in a conditionally uncontaminated area (Großschirma). The values of leaf area index and aboveground biomass obtained in field measurements were presented. The aboveground biomass values in the investigated plantations ranged from 189.9 ±10.16 to 201.8 ± 19.09 t/ha, and leaf area index values ranged from 1.74 ± 0.29 to 2.05 ± 0.16 m2/m2. Sentinel-2A multispectral images were processed for the construction of a map of the aboveground biomass distribution within the region under study. The values of the spectral indices for leaf area index were obtained with subsequent construction of the regression dependence of the aboveground biomass in the plantings on this indicator. The RMSE value for the developed model of the dependence of aboveground biomass on the leaf area index was 17.84 t/ha, which could be considered as satisfactory and can serve as a basis for practical application of the model developed. The inverse trend in relation to locations with different levels of soil contamination with As was determined for the aboveground biomass indicator. Within the region under study, the highest value of aboveground biomass in the stands was found for the area with the lowest As level. The results showed that the correlation coefficient between the highest of the optimal spectral indices, the leaf area index, and the aboveground biomass in B. pendula and P. tremula plantings was statistically significant and approached the value of 0.7. The results presented can become a theoretical basis for monitoring the accumulation of aboveground biomass of tree stands in areas with different levels of soil contamination with As. In perspective, the presented model of biomass estimation based on spectral technologies can serve as an application basis for rapid assessment of the growth and development parameters of forest stands in As-contaminated areas.

Heavy metal contamination in soils and vegetation poses a significant problem due to its toxicity and persistence. Toxic effects on vegetation include not only impaired growth, reduced yields, and even plant death but also biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation. Addressing this issue requires comprehensive monitoring and remediation efforts to mitigate the environmental, human health, and ecological impacts. This review examines the state-of-the-art methodologies and advancements in remote sensing applications for detecting and monitoring heavy metal contamination in soil and its subsequent effects on vegetation. By synthesizing the current research findings and technological developments, this review offers insights into the efficacy and potential of remote sensing for monitoring heavy metal contamination in terrestrial ecosystems. However, current studies focus on regression and AI methods to link spectral reflectances and indices to heavy metal concentrations, which poses limited transferability to other areas, times, spectral discretizations, and heavy metal elements. We conclude that one important way forward is the more thorough understanding and simulation of the related physico-chemical processes in soils and plants and their effects on the spectral signatures. This would offer a profound basis for remote sensing applications for individual circumstances and would allow disentangling heavy metal effects from other stressors such as droughts or soil salinity.

Sugarcane production has been linked to the release of heavy metals and metalloids (HM/MTs) into the environment, raising concerns about potential health risks. This study aimed to assess the levels of 19 HM/MTs in children living near a sugarcane mill through a pilot biomonitoring investigation. We investigated sex-related differences in these element levels and their correlations. A cross-sectional study was conducted, analyzing data from 20 children in the latter part of 2023. Spearman correlation coefficients with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to assess the relationships between urinary HM/MT levels. Detectable levels of 17 out of the 19 HM/MTs were found across the entire study sample, with arsenic and copper detectable in 95% of the children. Titanium exhibited higher levels in boys compared to girls (p = 0.017). We identified 56 statistically significant correlations, with 51 of them being positive, while the remaining coefficients indicated negative relationships. This study characterized HM/MT levels in school-aged children residing near a sugarcane mill through a pilot biomonitoring investigation. Further research employing larger sample sizes and longitudinal assessments would enhance our understanding of the dynamics and health impacts of HM/MT exposure in this vulnerable population.

Heavy metals and metalloids (HMs) contamination in the environment has heightened recently due to increasing global concern for food safety and human livability. Zinc (Zn2+) is an important nutrient required for the normal development of plants. It is an essential cofactor for the vital enzymes involved in various biological mechanisms of plants. Interestingly, Zn2+ has an additional role in the detoxification of HMs in plants due to its unique biochemical-mediating role in several soil and plant processes. During any exposure to high levels of HMs, the application of Zn2+ would confer greater plant resilience by decreasing oxidative stress, maintaining uptake of nutrients, photosynthesis productivity and optimising osmolytes concentration. Zn2+ also has an important role in ameliorating HMs toxicity by regulating metal uptake through the expression of certain metal transporter genes, targeted chelation and translocation from roots to shoots. This review examined the vital roles of Zn2+ and nano Zn in plants and described their involvement in alleviating HMs toxicity in plants. Moving forward, a broad understanding of uptake, transport, signalling and tolerance mechanisms of Zn2+/zinc and its nanoparticles in alleviating HMs toxicity of plants will be the first step towards a wider incorporation of Zn2+ into agricultural practices. Heavy metals and metalloids pollution in the environment, particularly in soils, has gained increased attention globally. Zn2+ is a crucial nutrient for tolerance against heavy metals. Freshwater reservoirs are essential owing because of their ecological, economic, and social importance. They are particularly vulnerable to contamination, as of metal and metalloids, derived from anthropogenic activities like mining. The temporal variations in trace element concentrations (arsenic (As), mercury (Hg), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn)), enrichment, fluxes, and possible sources were evaluated by studying two sediment cores from the La Angostura (ANG) Reservoir (northwest Mexico), using 210Pb geochronology. The enrichment factors showed from null to minor enrichment for most elements, but moderate to severe enrichment of mercury (Hg). Most trace element concentrations had a detrital origin, and notable Hg concentration increases since the past decade were associated with severe drought periods, likely resulting from wildfires. The observed sediment concentrations of As and Hg can cause adverse effects on biota in the ecosystem since they are above the probable effect level (PEL). Development of strategies for metal attenuation in this reservoir is recommended and metals should be controlled until specific ecotoxicological studies are performed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Heavy metals are among the most common and dangerous contaminants; their action on plants, as well as the possibility for plants to effectively absorb and translocate them, have been studied for several years, mainly for exploitation in phytoremediation, an environmentally friendly and potentially effective technology proposed and studied for the recovery of contaminated soils and waters. In this work, the analysis has focused on the studies developed using in vitro techniques on the possibilities of mitigating, in plants, the stress due to the presence of heavy metals and/or improving their absorption. These objectives can be pursued with the use of different substances and organisms, which have been examined in detail. The following are therefore presented in this review: an analysis of the role of metals and metalloids; the use of several plant growth regulators, with their mechanisms of action in different physiological phases of the plant; the activity of bacteria and fungi; and the role of other effective compounds, such as ascorbic acid and glutathione. The chemical composition of COVID test swabs has not been examined beyond the manufacturer's datasheets. The unprecedented demand for swabs to conduct rapid lateral flow tests and nucleic acid amplification tests led to mass production, including 3D printing platforms. Manufacturing impurities could be present in the swabs and, if so, could pose a risk to human health. We used scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy to examine the ultrastructure of seven assorted brands of COVID test swabs and to identify and quantify their chemical elements. We detected eight unexpected elements, including transition metals, such as titanium and zirconium, the metalloid silicon, as well as post-transition metals aluminium and gallium, and the non-metal elements sulphur and fluorine. Some of the elements were detected as trace amounts, but for others, the amount was close to reported toxicological thresholds for inhalation routes. Experimental studies have shown that the detrimental effects of unexpected chemical elements include moderate to severe inflammatory states in the exposed epithelium as well as proliferative changes. Given the massive testing still being used in the context of the COVID pandemic, we urge caution in continuing to recommend repeated and frequent testing, particularly of healthy, non-symptomatic, individuals. The aim of the study was to evaluate the presence of metal(loid)s in lubricating eye drops used in the treatment of dry eye disease. The concentrations of Al, As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cu, Cr, Pb, Fe, Mg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Se, V, and Zn were determined in 19 eye drop samples using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES). The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) values for the quantified elements ranged from 0.0002–0.0363 (mg/L) and 0.0007–0.1211 (mg/L), respectively. High values of concentrations of Al (2.382 µg/g), As (0.204 µg/g), Ba (0.056 µg/g), Cd (0.051 µg/g), Co (1.085 µg/g), Cr (0.020 µg/g), Cu (0.023 µg/g), Fe (0.453 µg/g), Mg (24.284 µg/g), Mn (0.014 µg/g), Mo (0.046 µg/g), Ni (0.071 µg/g), Pb (0.049 µg/g), Se (0.365 µg/g), V (0.083 µg/g), and Zn (0.552 µg/g) were quantified in samples of eye drops with and without preservatives. The concentrations of As (5 samples) and Cd (3 samples) were higher than those allowed by the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia for impurities (parenteral use). The value of Co content (µg/g) in a sample was higher than the value established by the International Council for Harmonization of Technical Requirements for Pharmaceuticals for Human Use (ICH Q3D (R2)) in the parenteral route. The daily eye drop instillation exposure (µg/day) was below the values from the parenteral-permitted daily exposure (PDE) set by the ICH Q3D guideline (R2). This study examined the sorption of heavy metals in selected soils (e.g., Andosol, Cambisol, Planosol) in Slovakia, focusing on the kind and quantity of humic materials as well as the soil’s characteristics. Heavy metals were detected using GT AAS, while UV-Vis spectroscopy was used to determine humic substances’ colour quotients. The impact of the total organic carbon on the total cadmium, bioavailable lead, and cadmium was highlighted. The results reveal positive correlations among humic substances and bioavailable forms of Cd (r = 0.692) and Pb (r = 0.709). A relationship was discovered between FAs and the bioavailable forms of Pb (r = 0.743) and Cd (r = 0.700) and between the level of HSs and the bioavailable content of Cd (r = 0.499). Bioavailable heavy metals showed a positive correlation with clay fraction and a negative correlation with heavy metal content. Correlations were found between the bioavailable heavy metal forms and the colour quotients of humic substances and humic acids. Heavy metals in bioavailable forms decreased with the levels of the condensation and dispersion of humic substances. From clay to silt, the amounts of Cd and Pb increased. This study’ results provide insights into the relationships between soil properties, humic substances, and the sorption of the studied elements.

The pollution of upper soil horizons in the city of Gusinoozersk (the Republic of Buryatia) under the influence of emissions from the State District Power Plant (SDPP) working on brown coal from the Okino-Klyuchevskii deposit was studied. The contents of 14 elements (Sr, As, Co, Mo, Sb, V, Cu, Ni, Cr, W, Zn, Bi, Cd, and Pb) in bulk soil samples, as well as in the fraction of physical clay (particles with a diameter <10 µm, PM10) and in samples of brown coal and ash from the SDPP were determined. Priority pollutants of local soils (Urbic Technosols) are Sr, As, Co, Mo, Sb, and V; these elements tend to have higher concentrations in the PM10 fraction. The most contaminated area is the industrial zone of the city, where Sr, As, Co, V, Cu, Mo, Ni, and Cr contained in the fly ash of the Gusinoozersk SDPP tend to accumulate. A larger part of the territory (57% for bulk soils and 47% for the PM10 fraction) is characterized by a low level of pollution (Zc = 8–16). Arsenic poses the greatest environmental hazard; in the PM10 fraction, its concentrations exceed the maximum permissible concentration in 90% of the studied samples. The main factors controlling the accumulation of elements in soils and their PM10 fraction are the contents of iron and manganese oxides and organic matter, soil texture, acid–base conditions, and the location of sampling sites in the particular land use zones; these factors specify the formation of various classes of geochemical barriers. The polluting effect of brown coals depends on the contents of heavy metals and metalloids in them. A comparison of the chemical composition of the Okino-Klyuchevskii brown coal and fly ash from the Gusinoozersk SDPP with the Kansk–Achinsk coal and fly ash from the Central Thermal Power Plant (CTPP) of Severobaikal'sk indicates that the brown coal and ash from Severobaikal'sk are only slightly enriched in metals and metalloids, which significantly reduces their accumulations in soils. This review summarises literature data on redox potential (Eh) as an essential characteristic of surface waters affecting their ecological and chemical state. We consider the influence of Eh on the migration of nutrients, metals, and metalloids in the 'bottom sediments – water' system and its role in the secondary pollution of water bodies. Hypoxia, anaerobic conditions, and reduced Eh leads to an increase in the concentration of nutrients, reduced forms of manganese and iron, due to their migration from bottom sediments to the aquatic environment. This, in turn, contributes to enhanced eutrophication of water bodies. We reviewed the data on the transformation of metal and metalloid compounds depends on the intensity of redox processes resulting their bioavailability, and toxicity to aquatic organisms. Humic substances, as the most common group of dissolved surface water organic substances, exhibit reducing properties and affect the coexisting metals and metalloid species. The intensity of redox processes in surface water will increase under climate change. The issue of redox transformation of elements will need to be considered in the context of developing measures to reduce surface water loading with primarily nutrients and metals, taking into account the possibility of internal pollution of water bodies. The operation stability of halide perovskite devices is the critical issue that impedes their commercialization. The main reasons are that the ambient H2O molecules can easily deteriorate the perovskites, while the metal electrodes react in different degrees with the perovskites. Herein, one kind of new electrode, the metalloids, is reported, which are much more stable than the conventional noble metals as electrical contacts for halide perovskites. The degradation mechanism of halide perovskites with noble metal electrodes is carefully studied and compared with the metalloid electrodes. It is found that the iodide ions can easily halogenate Cu and Ag in halide perovskites. Although Au is almost not halogenated, it can also decompose the perovskite film. On the contrary, after long‐term storage, the metalloid electrodes remain intact on the perovskite film without any degradation. In addition, the long‐time operation stability of the perovskite devices with metalloid electrodes is much higher than that of noble metals. First‐principles calculations confirm the exceptional stability of the metalloid electrodes.This work explores the ultra‐stable electrodes for halide perovskites, paving the way to the large‐scale deployment of perovskite‐based electronic devices. The fumes created from welding activities present a unique occupational hazard. Due to the complex processes which govern fume formation, the characterization of welding fumes is difficult. Emission factors (EFs) are one method to characterize fume formation from different processes and scenarios. This paper reviews the development of EFs and similar metrics both historic research which contributed to the US EPAs AP-42 summary of welding emission factors released in 1995, and more recent research initiatives. Through a critical analysis of what research has been done in this area and the strength of the emission factors developed, this paper proposes a set of recommendations for future research. Research on emission factors for gas metal arc welding (GMAW) is the most complete amongst the different types of electric arc welding. Despite it being generally known that flux core arc welding (FCAW) creates significant fume emissions compared to some of the other processes few studies have looked at FCAW since the AP-42. Shielded metal arc welding is also under-researched particularly in terms of metal-specific emission factors. The influence of different welding activity parameters such as welding location, speed or current is well defined for GMAW but requires more attention for other welding processes. Further effort towards compiling and comparing available emission factor data of quality, evaluating the available data statistically and organizing this data in a practically useful way is required. The availability of reliable emission factors will allow the development or improvement of exposure modelling tools that would be very useful for exposure assessment when monitoring is not practical.s [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Soil contamination with trace metals and metalloids can cause toxicity to plants and threaten food safety and human health. Plants have evolved sophisticated mechanisms to cope with excess trace metals and metalloids in soils, including chelation and vacuolar sequestration. Sulfur-containing compounds, such as glutathione and phytochelatins, play a crucial role in their detoxification, and sulfur uptake and assimilation are regulated in response to the stress of toxic trace metals and metalloids. This review focuses on the multi-level connections between sulfur homeostasis in plants and responses to such stresses, especially those imposed by arsenic and cadmium. We consider recent progress in understanding the regulation of biosynthesis of glutathione and phytochelatins and of the sensing mechanism of sulfur homeostasis for tolerance of trace metals and metalloids in plants. We also discuss the roles of glutathione and phytochelatins in controlling the accumulation and distribution of arsenic and cadmium in plants, and possible strategies for manipulating sulfur metabolism to limit their accumulation in food crops.
