Abstract Episodic memory is essential for forming and retaining personal experiences, representing a fundamental aspect of human cognition. Traditional studies of episodic memory have typically used static analysis methods, viewing the brain as an unchanging entity and overlooking its dynamic properties over time. In this study, we utilized dynamic functional connectivity analysis on fMRI data from healthy adults performing an episodic memory task. We quantified integration and recruitment metrics and examined their correlation with memory performance using Pearson correlation. During encoding, integration across the entire brain, especially within the frontoparietal subnetwork, was significantly correlated with memory performance. During retrieval, recruitment becomes significantly associated with memory performance in visual subnetwork, somatomotor subnetwork, and ventral attention subnetwork. At the nodal level, a significant negative correlation was observed between memory scores and integration of the anterior cingulate gyrus, precentral gyrus, and inferior frontal gyrus within the frontoparietal network during encoding task. During retrieval task, a significant negative correlation was found between memory scores and recruitment in the left progranular cortex and right transverse gyral ventral, whereas positive correlations were seen in the right posterior inferior temporal, left middle temporal, right frontal operculum, and left operculum nodes. Moreover, the dynamic reconfiguration of the functional network was predictive of predict memory performance, as demonstrated by a significant correlation between actual and predicted memory scores. These findings advance our understanding network mechanisms underlying memory processes and developing intervention approaches for memory-related disorders as they shed light on critical factors involved in cognitive processes and provide a deeper understanding of the underlying mechanisms driving cognitive function.

Meta-analysis is a statistical tool used to combine and synthesise the results of multiple independent studies on a particular topic. To this end, researchers isolate important moderators and mediators to investigate their influence on outcomes. This paper introduces a novel approach to meta-analysis, known as multidimensional meta-analysis (mi-MA), to study memory performance in those with obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD). Unlike traditional meta-analyses, mi-MA allows researchers to extract multiple data points (e.g., using different measures) from single studies and groups of participants, facilitating the exploration of relationships between various moderators while avoiding multicollinearity issues. Therefore, in the first instance, we outline the use of the mi-MA approach to quantify the impact of complex models of memory performance in individuals with OCD. This approach provides novel insights into the complex relationship between various factors affecting memory in people with OCD. By showcasing the effectiveness of mi-MA in analysing intricate data and modelling complex phenomena, the paper establishes it as a valuable tool for researchers exploring multifaceted phenomena, both within OCD research and beyond. Memories of painful events constitute the basis for assessing patients' pain. This study explores the brain oscillatory activity during short‐term memorization of a nociceptive stimulus. High‐density EEG activity (128 electrodes) was recorded in 13 healthy subjects during a match‐to‐sample sensory discrimination task, whereby participants compared the intensity of a thumb‐located electric shock (S2) with a prior stimulus to the same location (S1) delivered 8–10 s earlier. Stimuli were above or below the individual nociceptive threshold. EEG activity with intracortical source localization via LORETA source reconstruction was analysed during the inter‐stimuli period and contrasted with a non‐memory‐related control task. The inter‐stimulus memorization phase was characterized by a focal alpha‐activity enhancement, significant during the nociceptive condition only, which progressed from bilateral occipital regions (cuneus and mid‐occipital gyri) during the first encoding—memorization phase towards the right‐superior and right mid‐temporal gyri during the 2–4 s immediately preceding S2. Initial alpha enhancement in occipital areas/cuneus is consistent with rapid non‐specific inhibition of task‐irrelevant visual processing during initial stimulus encoding. Its transfer to the right‐temporal regions was concomitant to the temporary upholding of the stimulus perceptual representation, previous to receiving S2, and suggests an active and local blockade of external interferences while these regions actively maintain internal information. These results add to a growing field indicating that alpha oscillations, while indicating local inhibitory processes, can also indirectly reveal active stimulus handling, including maintenance in short‐term memory buffers, by objectivizing the filtering out of irrelevant and potentially disrupting inputs in brain regions engaged in internally driven operations. Shrinking of the thickness of silicon on insulator (SOI) has been proposed as a potential solution for scaling down the physical base length of symmetric lateral electrostatically doped bipolar transistors. An ultra-thin body device that utilizes the full SOI thickness has been presented and the performance of the same is investigated in detail. The device features two distinct doping techniques: work function-induced electrostatic doping (WED) and bias-induced electrostatic doping (BED). The proposed design approach leads to significant improvements in gain and cut-off frequency compared to previously reported designs. The resulting devices exhibit peak current gain β values >1100, ft>500 GHz, fmax>1300 GHz. Moreover, these improved device performance matrices get translated into better performance of universal gates with low rise and fall time of ∼1.3 ns, and improved noise margin performance in static random access memory (SRAM) device of 0.43 and 0.41 for WED and BED based devices respectively. Furthermore, the study investigates the reliability of the device concerning breakdown voltage and its response to different temperature conditions. The findings reveal a decline in the β value for WED-based devices when subjected to temperatures exceeding 340 K. In contrast, BED-based devices demonstrate a comparatively smaller variation in β at temperatures above 340 K. These results show the potential of the proposed device for mixed-signal and digital circuit applications.

Attributed to the characteristics of narrow band gap structural units and full spectral response, iso‐indigo is often used as an electron acceptor in organic electronic materials. Organic molecules with large conjugated surfaces and strong intermolecular forces can form ordered stacked structures through self‐assembly. In this paper, the self‐assembly performances of IDCF3 and IDCN are regulated by changing the end groups. The effects of terminal groups on the resistive memory behaviours and reproducibility are investigated. The properties of IDCF3 and IDCN devices are characterized by UV‐VIS spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and DSC diffraction. The results show that when the end groups with different steric hindrance are introduced into the ends of the molecules with good backbone plane, the conjugated surfaces of the molecules will bend due to the different steric hindrance of the end groups in the form of cambium and layer‐ordered packing, which will affect the threshold voltage and device reproducibility. Although research has explored social factors influencing memory performance during adolescence, the impact of adolescent social network positions remains largely unknown. This study examines whether adolescent network position is associated with memory performance in adulthood, while also considering potential gender differences. The study used a sibling sample from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (N = 2462) and employed sibling fixed effects models to account for unobserved family background factors, such as genetics, parental characteristics, family environment, and childhood neighborhood. Four dimensions of adolescent network position—i.e., popularity, sociality, degree centrality, and closeness centrality—were sociometrically assessed in schools. Memory performance in adulthood was measured using the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test. The sibling fixed effects estimates indicate that sociality, degree centrality, and closeness centrality are significantly associated with increased memory performance in adulthood, even after controlling for unobserved family heterogeneity as well as a set of individual-level covariates. In contrast, controlling for unobserved family heterogeneity attenuated the association for popularity, making it statistically insignificant. This study also provides evidence of gender differences in the association between social network position and memory performance. The associations for popularity, sociality, and degree centrality are more pronounced among men than women. This study's findings highlight the importance of adolescent network positions as social determinants in shaping cognitive outcomes over the life course. Purpose: This study explored the relationship between naps and memory among habitual nappers in China. Methods: Medical college students participated and were divided into 30-min, 60-min, and 90-min time-in-bed groups. To evaluate declarative and procedural memory performance, A–B and A–C interfering word pair and interfering finger tapping tasks were employed. Results: Among 60 students, a significant decrease in the correct recall rate in the declarative task after having a nap was found only in the 30-min group (p = 0.005). After learning interference (A-C word pairs), the correct recall rate for the declarative task decreased significantly in all interference tests (ps < 0.001). In the procedural task, the speed of sequence A in the retests increased after having a nap in all three groups (ps < 0.048), with a significant decrease in accuracy only in the 30-min group (p = 0.042). After learning interference (sequence B) in the procedural task, the speed of sequence A increased in the 60-min group after 1 h (p = 0.049), and both the 60-min and 90-min groups showed increased speed after one night (ps < 0.022). No significant improvement in speed was found in the 30-min group (ps > 0.05), and this group showed the lowest accuracy for sequence A (ps < 0.16). Conclusion: A habitual nap time-in-bed of 60 or 90 min had better effects on declarative and procedural memory consolidation and better memory resistance against interference in procedural memory. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of orally administering Thymus vulgaris leaves on memory performance, anxiety, depression, and sleep quality in a sample of university students. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This randomized controlled trial included 106 students who were randomly assigned to one of two groups. The first group received 500 mg of Thymus vulgaris leaves twice daily, while the second group received a placebo. The intervention period lasted for one month. The participants' memory performance (both prospective and retrospective), levels of anxiety and depression, and sleep quality were assessed using the Prospective and Retrospective Memory Questionnaire (PRMQ), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Inventory (PSQI) at the beginning of the study and after one month. RESULTS: The findings revealed significant reductions in the scores of all scales and subscales, with the exception of the sleep latency and sleep duration components of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Inventory, among the group that received Thymus vulgaris leaves in comparison to the control group. CONCLUSIONS: Thymus vulgaris leaves, a traditional food source, demonstrate potential for enhancing both prospective and retrospective memory, alleviating anxiety and depression, and improving sleep quality in university students. The temporal variability of the dynamic functional connectivity (dFC) has been suggested as a useful metric for studying abnormal cognitive function. This study aimed to explore the associations between the temporal properties of dFC and memory performance in betel quid dependence (BQD). Sixty‐four BQD individuals and 47 gender‐ and age‐matched healthy controls (HCs) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging and a series of neuropsychological assessments. The dFC was constructed by calculating the Pearson correlation coefficients within a sliding window and was clustered into three functional connectivity states using k‐means clustering. The dFC temporal properties derived from the cluster results were compared between the BQD and HC groups. The results showed that States 1 and 3 featured more frequent and weak connectivity, and State 2 featured less frequent and strong connectivity. There were significant differences for mean dwell time (MDT) in State 3 (p = 0.022) and fraction of time in State 2 (p = 0.018) between the BQD and HC groups. Pearson correlation analyses showed that the MDT in State 1 was negatively correlated with long delay free recall and short delay free recall, and the MDT in State 3 was positively correlated with false positive of long delay recall. Our findings provide strong evidence that MDT match the memory performance and suggest new insights into the pathophysiological mechanism of memory disorders in BQD individuals. Introduction: Cerebral small vessel disease (cSVD) is a growing epidemic that affects brain health and cognition. Therefore, a more profound understanding of the interplay between cSVD, brain atrophy, and cognition in healthy aging is of great importance. In this study, we examined the association between white matter hyperintensities (WMH) volume, number of lacunes, entorhinal cortex (EC) thickness, and declarative memory in cognitively healthy older adults over a seven-year period, controlling for possible confounding factors. Because there is no cure for cSVD to date, the neuroprotective potential of an active lifestyle has been suggested. Supporting evidence, however, is scarce. Therefore, a second objective of this study is to examine the relationship between leisure activities, cSVD, EC thickness, and declarative memory. Methods: We used a longitudinal dataset, which consisted of five measurement time points of structural MRI and psychometric cognitive ability and survey data, collected from a sample of healthy older adults (baseline N = 231, age range: 64–87 years, age M = 70.8 years), to investigate associations between cSVD MRI markers, EC thickness and verbal and figural memory performance. Further, we computed physical, social, and cognitive leisure activity scores from survey-based assessments and examined their associations with brain structure and declarative memory. Virtual reality (VR) is thought of as a promising educational medium, especially for learning actions, as it enables learning by enactment. Learning by enactment is associated with the enactment effect which describes a superior memory for enacted actions compared to actions which have not been enacted. To date, however, little is known about whether the enactment effect across different conditions of action learning can be found in VR which sets the stage for our first research question. Additionally, as a second research question, this study explores the extent to which the memory performance of learning by enactment in VR corresponds to learning by enactment in physical reality. We conducted a VR between subjects experiment with four groups (N = 112) that differed in terms of condition or environment. Participants were asked to remember short action phrases for a subsequent memory test. The results indicate that learning by enactment in VR outperforms learning by reading in VR but does not exceed observational learning in VR. Furthermore, the results demonstrate that the memory performance of learning by enactment in VR is similar to that in physical reality. • Depression is a risk factor of independence in the instrumental activities of daily living. • Memory performance is a protective factor of abilities to live independently. • Memory performance is a partial mediator between depression and independence in the instrumental activities of daily living. Our objective was to examine the link between depression and independence in the instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) and to explore the mediating role of memory performance through a cross-sectional analysis of a nationally representative sample of community-dwelling older adults in China. In total, 3730 respondents age ≥ 60 (51.7% males) from the 2020 survey of the China Family Panel Study (CFPS) constituted the study sample. Their depressive symptoms, memory performance, and independence in the IADLs were measured. Based on the descriptive statistics, bivariate correlation analysis and bootstrapping mediation analysis were conducted. As hypothesized, independence in the IADLs was negatively related to depression, while it was positively associated with memory performance. Moreover, after controlling for demographic factors, memory performance was demonstrated to be a partial mediator between depression and independence in the IADLs. These findings support the development of clinical interventions which prevent disability or maintain the physical functioning of older adults through alleviating depression and enhancing memory performance. Cultural stereotypes that equate aging with decreased competence and increased forgetfulness have persisted for decades. Stereotype threat (ST) refers to the psychological discomfort people experience when confronted by a negative, self-relevant stereotype in a situation where their behavior could be construed as confirming that belief. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships of ST on memory performance in older adults over 24 months. The ST levels on average significantly declined, or improved in the memory training, but not the health training group. Although not significant at the.01 level, the bivariate correlation indicated that change in ST was moderately related to change in verbal memory, suggesting the possibility that improvements (or reductions) in ST may be related to increases in verbal memory scores. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) has the highest mortality rates worldwide, yet effective treatment remains unavailable. TBI causes inflammatory responses, endoplasmic reticulum stress, disruption of the blood–brain barrier and neurodegeneration that lead to loss of cognition, memory and motor skills. Saffron (Crocus sativus L.) is known for its anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects, which makes it a potential candidate for TBI treatment. Zebrafish (Danio rerio) shares a high degree of genetic homology and cell signaling pathways with mammals. Its active neuro-regenerative function makes it an excellent model organism for TBI therapeutic drug identification. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of saffron administration to a TBI zebrafish model by investigating behavioral outcomes such as anxiety, fear and memory skills using a series of behavioral tests. Saffron exhibited anxiolytic effect on anxiety-like behaviors, and showed prevention of fear inhibition observed after TBI. It improved learning and enhanced memory performance. Over two decades in mid-century America, the professional approach to sites endangered by post-war construction and development projects was to excavate and "save the data" from certain loss. Archeologists led such salvage efforts from 1945 to 1970, first meeting the increased demand for their labor and skills. Then, in seeing the permanence of destruction, they shifted by extending their concept of safe preservation into the future: an early conservationist archeology. One broad impact of the River Basin Surveys was in memorializing tribal histories and relationships to the land environment by the recovery of large swaths of biological, ecological, palynological, and geological data from excavations coordinated from branch offices in Nebraska, Oregon, California, Washington, D.C., and Texas. With funding from the National Science Foundation, Texas professor E. Mott Davis created a meticulous record of such archeological practices through a film series which captures that shift from the perspective of one of its practitioners. Spadework for History (1964), subtitled "Salvaging American History," seeks to document the country's anthropological archeology through a pioneering academic collaboration between film and archeology. Weighing scholarship on the production of archives—including an awakening to power in their production of history—this article considers the power of film in creating a memory text. In retelling Davis's contribution, evidence from the films' reception and memory studies perspectives together expand the temporal framework available to support further audiovisual collection-based analyses of professional work. Changes to memory performance in the course of aging may be influenced by behavioral factors. The use of social media among elderly people is increasing, but studying its effect on cognitive functions such as memory remains at an early stage of development. Meanwhile, the linking mechanisms underlying the association between social media use and memory performance, if any exist, have not been revealed. This study attempted to examine the association between the use of WeChat, the most popular social media platform in China, and memory performance among older people, and to test the possible mediating role of depression underlying this association. Data were drawn from the five-wave survey of the China Family Panel Study (CFPS), and 4929 respondents aged 60 or older (mean age = 68.19, SD = 5.84, 48.2% females) were included. Based on the descriptive statistics, the chi-squared test, Student's t-test, correlation analysis, and mediation analysis were conducted. The results indicated that the usage rate of WeChat among the sample was 20.1%. After controlling for demographic variables, the use of WeChat was related to higher levels of memory performance and lower levels of depression. Moreover, depression partially mediated the relationship between WeChat use and memory performance. Background/aimsThe aim of this study was to assess the ability of neuropsychological tests to differentiate autopsy-defined Alzheimer disease (AD) from subcortical ischemic vascular dementia (SIVD).MethodsFrom a sample of 175 cases followed longitudinally that underwent autopsy, we selected 23 normal controls (NC), 20 SIVD, 69 AD, and 10 mixed cases of dementia. Baseline neuropsychological tests, including Memory Assessment Scale word list learning test, control oral word association test, and animal fluency, were compared between the three autopsy-defined groups.ResultsThe NC, SIVD, and AD groups did not differ by age or education. The SIVD and AD groups did not differ by the Global Clinical Dementia Rating Scale. Subjects with AD performed worse on delayed recall (p < 0.01). A receiver operating characteristics analysis comparing the SIVD and AD groups including age, education, difference between categorical (animals) versus phonemic fluency (letter F), and the first recall from the word learning test distinguished the two groups with a sensitivity of 85%, specificity of 67%, and positive likelihood ratio of 2.57 (AUC = 0.789, 95% CI 0.69-0.88, p < 0.0001).ConclusionIn neuropathologically defined subgroups, neuropsychological profiles have modest ability to distinguish patients with AD from those with SIVD.

Long‐term environmental stability of electronic and optoelectronic devices is a very important concern. Both black phosphorus (BP) nanosheets and quantum dots (BPQDs) exhibit very poor environmental stability. To address this problem, a new encapsulation approach for improving long‐term stability of the BPQD‐based electronic devices, which concerns two‐step in situ polymerizations: 1) in situ polymerization of dopamine in the presence of BPQDs giving a BPQDs@PDA (PDA: polydopamine) composite; 2) in situ atom transfer radical polymerization of N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone on the BPQDs@PDA surface producing the BPQDs@PDA–PVP composite (PVP: polyvinylpyrrolidone), is developed. Both the Al/BPQDs@PDA–PVP/ITO and Al/BPQDs:PVP blends/ITO devices show excellent nonvolatile memory performance at the initial measurement stage. Interestingly, the former can only be programmed to the high conductivity state in the positive bias range, while the latter can be switched into the ON state only in the negative bias range. The different switching directions may be highly associated with the inherent electronic structural characteristics of the materials. In contrast to the BPQDs:PVP blends and/or BPQDS@PDA:PVP blend‐based electronic devices with very unstable memory performance, the memory performance of the BPQDs@PDA–PVP‐based device remains unchanged even standing for 90 d. Abstract Background Psychological factors such as depression, anxiety, stress and insomnia and problematic social media use are able to alter our memories and might have an impact on memory function and retrieval. More studies are needed to better understand the relationship between memory performance and mental health disorders, especially the ones that could be related to problematic social media use. The objective of this study was to evaluate any association between problematic social media use, depression, anxiety, stress, and insomnia vs memory performance among a representative sample of Lebanese people. Methods This cross-sectional study, conducted between January and May 2019, enrolled 466 community dwelling participants using a proportionate random sample from all Lebanese governorates. The questionnaire consisted of the following measures: the Memory Awareness Rating Scale (MARS) to assesses views of memory performance, the problematic social media use scale to measure the degree of addiction to social media, the Hamilton depression rating scale and Hamilton anxiety scale to assess depression and anxiety respectively, the Beirut Distress Scale to assess stress and the Lebanese Insomnia sale to assess insomnia. The data analysis was performed using the SPSS software version 25. A linear regression was conducted, taking the memory performance scale as the dependent variable. A mediation analysis was performed to test the effect of problematic social media use on memory performance mediated by depression, anxiety, stress and insomnia. Results Higher problematic social media use (Beta = − 0.21) and higher anxiety (Beta = − 0.25) were significantly associated with lower memory performance. The association between problematic social media use and memory performance was partially mediated by anxiety (21.19%) but not depression, stress or insomnia. Conclusion Concerning problematic social media use, a clear correlation was demonstrated in this study linking it to lower memory performances. Future studies should evaluate the possible mechanisms and methods for effective awareness especially towards the younger generation.

Recently, NVM (non-volatile memory) has advanced as a fast storage medium, and traditional memory management systems designed for HDD storage should be reconsidered. In this article, we revisit the page sizing problem in NVM storage, specially focusing on virtualized systems. The page sizing problem has not caught attention in traditional systems because of the two reasons. First, the memory performance is not sensitive to the page size when HDD is adopted as storage. We show that this is not the case in NVM storage by analyzing the TLB miss rate and the page fault rate, which have trade-off relations with respect to the page size. Second, changing the page size in traditional systems is not easy as it accompanies significant overhead. However, due to the widespread adoption of virtualized systems, the page sizing problem becomes feasible for virtual machines, which are generated for executing specific workloads with fixed hardware resources. In this article, we design a page size model that accurately estimates the TLB miss rate and the page fault rate for NVM storage. We then present a method that has the ability of estimating the memory access time as the page size is varied, which can guide a suitable page size for given environments. By considering workload characteristics with given memory and storage resources, we show that the memory performance of virtualized systems can be improved by 38.4% when our model is adopted.

Abstract Long‐term environmental stability of electronic and optoelectronic devices is a very important concern. Both black phosphorus (BP) nanosheets and quantum dots (BPQDs) exhibit very poor environmental stability. To address this problem, a new encapsulation approach for improving long‐term stability of the BPQD‐based electronic devices, which concerns two‐step in situ polymerizations: 1) in situ polymerization of dopamine in the presence of BPQDs giving a BPQDs@PDA (PDA: polydopamine) composite; 2) in situ atom transfer radical polymerization of N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone on the BPQDs@PDA surface producing the BPQDs@PDA–PVP composite (PVP: polyvinylpyrrolidone), is developed. Both the Al/BPQDs@PDA–PVP/ITO and Al/BPQDs:PVP blends/ITO devices show excellent nonvolatile memory performance at the initial measurement stage. Interestingly, the former can only be programmed to the high conductivity state in the positive bias range, while the latter can be switched into the ON state only in the negative bias range. The different switching directions may be highly associated with the inherent electronic structural characteristics of the materials. In contrast to the BPQDs:PVP blends and/or BPQDS@PDA:PVP blend‐based electronic devices with very unstable memory performance, the memory performance of the BPQDs@PDA–PVP‐based device remains unchanged even standing for 90 d.

• There is converging evidence for memory improvement in patients with brain disorders following rTMS treatment. • A remarkable percentage of positive results was found in patients with mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease. • Future research should consider properly designed treatment protocols including longitudinal follow-up. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is being used as a non-invasive, non-pharmacological treatment with emerging clinical applications. The objective of this systematic review is to assess the possible rTMS effect on memory performance in patients suffering from central nervous system diseases. PubMed, Google Scholar, Science Direct and Cochrane Library were searched through April 2021 for rTMS clinical trials in neuropsychiatric conditions, assessing pre-post treatment patients' memory performance with neuropsychological measures. One hundred and four clinical studies were included for evaluation. Overall, a large number of reports were detected with a positive outcome of patients' memory performance, concerning primarily the working memory, whereas there were also inconsistent results. In particular, considerable results were observed in patients with mild cognitive impairment and early stage Alzheimer's disease. Despite the variability of reports and the limited ability to generalize our findings, this review offers further evidence regarding the possible use of rTMS as a memory enhancement tool. The study provides an updated and broad review in the field and highlights the need for more adequate studies, focusing on treatment procedure characteristics, follow-up and maintenance options of this approach. Introduction: We investigated how cerebrospinal fluid levels of synaptic proteins associate with memory function in normal cognition (CN) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and investigated the effect of amyloid positivity on these associations., Methods: We included 242 CN (105(43%) abnormal amyloid), and 278 MCI individuals (183(66%) abnormal amyloid) from EMIF-AD MBD and ADNI. With the recent interest in data storage in flexible electronics, highly reliable charge trap‐type organic‐based non‐volatile memory (CT‐ONVM) has attracted much attention. CT‐ONVM should have a wide memory window, good endurance, and long‐term retention characteristics, as well as mechanical flexibility. This paper proposed CT‐ONVM devices consisting of band‐engineered organic–inorganic hybrid films synthesized via an initiated chemical vapor deposition process. The synthesized poly(1,3,5‐trimethyl‐1,3,5,‐trivinyl cyclotrisiloxane) and Al hybrid films are used as a tunneling dielectric layer and a blocking dielectric layer, respectively. For the charge trapping layer, different Hf, Zr, and Ti hybrids are examined, and their memory performances are systematically compared. The best combination of hybrid dielectric stacks showed a wide memory window of 6.77 V, good endurance of up to 104 cycles, and charge retention of up to 71% after 108 s even under the 2% strained condition. The CT‐ONVM device using the hybrid dielectric stacks outperforms other organic‐based charge trap memory devices and is even comparable in performance to conventional inorganic‐based poly‐silicon/oxide/nitride/oxide/silicon structures devices. The CT‐ONVM using hybrid dielectrics can overcome the inherent low reliability and process complexity limitations of organic electronics and expedite the realization of wearable organic electronics. BackgroundAttempts have been made to explore the biological basis of neurodegeneration in the amnestic mild cognitive impairment (MCI) stage, subdivided by memory performance. However, few studies have evaluated the differential impact of functional connectivity (FC) on memory performances in early- and late-MCI patients.ObjectiveThis study aims to explore the difference in FC of the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) among healthy controls (HC) (n = 37), early-MCI patients (n = 30), and late-MCI patients (n = 35) and to evaluate a group-memory performance interaction against the FC of PCC.MethodsThe subjects underwent resting-state functional MRI scanning and a battery of neuropsychological tests.ResultsA significant difference among the three groups was found in FC between the PCC (seed region) and bilateral crus cerebellum, right superior medial frontal gyrus, superior temporal gyrus, and left middle cingulate gyrus (Monte Carlo simulation-corrected p < 0.01; cluster p < 0.05). Background: During recent decades, research studies have confirmed exercise training as a remarkable lifestyle intervention towards enhancing learning and memory. However, the intensity and manner by which the labor conditions partake in the functionality of brain tissue are not yet clear. Therefore, this study aimed to provide a non-systematic review article of the behavioral and cellular mechanisms on learning function and memory performance in animal and human species. Materials and Methods: The method of data collection was to retrieve scientific papers, published between 1999 and 2019, from available databases, using the searching keywords: aerobic exercise, memory, and learning. Subsequently, out of 120 available articles, 107 cases were selected to survey the role of aerobic exercise on the nervous system. Results: Findings from the literature review revealed the significant effect of regular submaximal aerobic exercise on learning and memory function, in both rats and humans. Furthermore, some studies indicated that long-term aerobic exercise intervention did not increase the learning functions and memory performance. Nevertheless, the positive effects of exercise patterns on memory predominate the negative ones. Thus, further investigation is necessary to thoroughly examine the role of the intensity, duration, and type of exercise training on both cognitive learning functions, and on the selection of new neuropeptides in brain tissue. Conclusion: The rehabilitation role of aerobic exercise protocols seems important in the enhancement of learning level efficiency. Also these protocols were important in possible treatment of the memory-related central nervous system disorders.

Background: Memory performance is a cognitive function that is affected by environmental, genetic and socioeconomic factors, as well as by weight status. Aim: To evaluate the association of weight status at 2 years of age with the memory performance of children at 4–5 years of age. Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional study that used baseline data (2012) and data from two follow-up periods (2014 and 2016) of the PREDI Cohort Study. Participants were mother–child pairs 4–5 years after delivery who were seen between July 2016 and August 2017. The children’s memory performance was evaluated individually using a validated Brazilian instrument. Results: Of the 203 children included in the study, 117 (57.6%), 52 (25.6%) and 34 (16.8%) had low, moderate and high memory performance, respectively. After adjusting for potential confounders, children with a BMI > 85th percentile had 3.33-times higher odds of exhibiting lower memory performance at 4–5 years of age than those with a BMI ≤ 85th percentile. In addition to the children’s BMI at 2 years of age, mother’s education was another independent determinant of children’s memory performance. There was a progressive increase in the odds of children having lower memory performance at 4–5 years of age as the mother’s education decreased. Conclusion: Primary prevention of overweight and management of cognitive functions may be important strategies to improve the cognitive development of children in the future.

Changes to memory performance in the course of aging may be influenced by behavioral factors. The use of social media among elderly people is increasing, but studying its effect on cognitive functions such as memory remains at an early stage of development. Meanwhile, the linking mechanisms underlying the association between social media use and memory performance, if any exist, have not been revealed. This study attempted to examine the association between the use of WeChat, the most popular social media platform in China, and memory performance among older people, and to test the possible mediating role of depression underlying this association. Data were drawn from the five-wave survey of the China Family Panel Study (CFPS), and 4929 respondents aged 60 or older (mean age = 68.19, SD = 5.84, 48.2% females) were included. Based on the descriptive statistics, the chi-squared test, Student’s t-test, correlation analysis, and mediation analysis were conducted. The results indicated that the usage rate of WeChat among the sample was 20.1%. After controlling for demographic variables, the use of WeChat was related to higher levels of memory performance and lower levels of depression. Moreover, depression partially mediated the relationship between WeChat use and memory performance. To maintain memory performance and promote cognitive health in the course of aging, using social media and alleviating depression merit special attention.

Background: Psychological factors such as depression, anxiety, stress and insomnia and problematic social media use are able to alter our memories and might have an impact on memory function and retrieval. More studies are needed to better understand the relationship between memory performance and mental health disorders, especially the ones that could be related to problematic social media use. The objective of this study was to evaluate any association between problematic social media use, depression, anxiety, stress, and insomnia vs memory performance among a representative sample of Lebanese people. Methods: This cross-sectional study, conducted between January and May 2019, enrolled 466 community dwelling participants using a proportionate random sample from all Lebanese governorates. The questionnaire consisted of the following measures: the Memory Awareness Rating Scale (MARS) to assesses views of memory performance, the problematic social media use scale to measure the degree of addiction to social media, the Hamilton depression rating scale and Hamilton anxiety scale to assess depression and anxiety respectively, the Beirut Distress Scale to assess stress and the Lebanese Insomnia sale to assess insomnia. The data analysis was performed using the SPSS software version 25. A linear regression was conducted, taking the memory performance scale as the dependent variable. A mediation analysis was performed to test the effect of problematic social media use on memory performance mediated by depression, anxiety, stress and insomnia. Results: Higher problematic social media use (Beta = − 0.21) and higher anxiety (Beta = − 0.25) were significantly associated with lower memory performance. The association between problematic social media use and memory performance was partially mediated by anxiety (21.19%) but not depression, stress or insomnia. Conclusion: Concerning problematic social media use, a clear correlation was demonstrated in this study linking it to lower memory performances. Abstract Background Amyloid-beta (Aβ) has a dose-response relationship with cognition in healthy adults. Additionally, the levels of functional connectivity within and between brain networks have been associated with cognitive performance in healthy adults. Aiming to explore potential synergistic effects, we investigated the relationship of inter-network functional connectivity, Aβ burden, and memory decline among healthy individuals and individuals with preclinical, prodromal, or clinical Alzheimer’s disease. Methods In this longitudinal cohort study (ADNI2), participants (55–88 years) were followed for a maximum of 5 years. We included cognitively healthy participants and patients with mild cognitive impairment (with or without elevated Aβ) or Alzheimer’s disease. Associations between memory decline, Aβ burden, and connectivity between networks across the groups were investigated using linear and curvilinear mixed-effects models. Results We found a synergistic relationships between inter-network functional connectivity and Aβ burden on memory decline. Dose-response relationships between Aβ and memory decline varied as a function of directionality of inter-network connectivity across groups. When inter-network correlations were negative, the curvilinear mixed-effects models revealed that higher Aβ burden was associated with greater memory decline in cognitively normal participants, but when inter-network correlations were positive, there was no association between the magnitude of Aβ burden and memory decline. Opposite patterns were observed in patients with mild cognitive impairment. Combining negative inter-network correlations with Aβ burden can reduce the required sample size by 88% for clinical trials aiming to slow down memory decline. Conclusions The direction of inter-network connectivity provides additional information about Aβ burden on the rate of expected memory decline, especially in the preclinical phase. These results may be valuable for optimizing patient selection and decreasing study times to assess efficacy in clinical trials.

CLU encoding clusterin, has been reported to associate with Alzherimer's disease (AD) by genome-wide association studies (GWAS) based on Caucasian populations. Our previous case-control study has independently confirmed the disease association of CLU in Chinese population. Since little is known about the underlying mechanism of CLU in AD, we have conducted this study to investigate whether the genetic impact of CLU polymorphisms on cognitive functioning is via serum lipid's dysfunction. Three GWAS previously published CLU polymorphisms including rs2279590, rs11136000 and rs9331888, were genotyped in 689 subjects. Serum levels of triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were measured and tested as mediators. Delayed Word Recall Test (DWRT) was used to evaluate subjects' memory performance. Multiple mediation analysis, a nonparametric procedure to create confidence interval, was performed according to Preacher and Hayes's Bootstrapping method. Our findings suggested significant correlation between CLU polymorphism and DWRT scores for rs11136000 (p = 0.045) after adjustment for age, gender, body mass index, and APOEε4 status, with borderline significant correlation for rs2279590 (p = 0.058). Both T allele of rs11136000 and A allele of rs2279590 were negatively correlated with serum TG levels (p = 0.003; p = 0.001, separately). Moreover, A allele of rs2279590 was positively correlated with serum HDL-C levels (p = 0.015). Consistent with our hypotheses, the genetic impact of CLU polymorphisms on memory performance were partially mediated through TG (rs11136000 95% CI [-0.099,-0.003] and rs2279590 95% CI [-0.104, −0.004]), but not through HDL-C and LDL-C. Objectives: A growing body of evidence indicates that hypoxia exposure causes learning and memory deficits. An effective natural therapeutic approach has, however, not been explored widely. Our previous studies found that Tualang honey administration protected learning and memory functions in ovariectomized rats. Therefore, the present study investigated its efficacy in ameliorating hypoxia-induced memory deficits in adult male Sprague Dawley rats. Materials and Methods: The rats were divided into four groups: i) Normoxia treated with sucrose (n=12), ii) Normoxia treated with Tualang honey (n=12), iii) Hypoxia treated with sucrose (n=12), and iv) Hypoxia treated with Tualang honey (n=12). Tualang honey (0.2 g/kg/BW) and sucrose (1 mL of 7.9%) supplementations were administered orally to the rats daily for 14 days. Then the hypoxia groups were exposed to hypoxia (~11%) for 7 days, while the normoxia groups were kept in normal conditions. Following exposure to hypoxia, the rats' memories were analyzed using a novel object recognition task and T-maze test. Results: The data revealed that rats exposed to hypoxia showed significant impairment in short-term memory (STM), spatial memory (p<0.01), and long-term memory (LTM) when compared to the normoxia group. Hypoxia rats treated with Tualang honey showed significant improvement in STM, LTM, and spatial memory (p<0.05) compared with those treated with sucrose (p<0.05). Tualang honey also reduced neuronal damage in the hippocampus of adult male Sprague Dawley rats exposed to hypoxia. Conclusion: It is suggested that Tualang honey pretreatment has protective effects against hypoxia-induced memory deficits, possibly through its antioxidant contents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aims to examine the mediating role of learning self-efficacy in the relationship between subjective age and memory performance as well as the moderating role of education in these indirect and direct relationships. A study was conducted with 200 older adults aged 60 to 81 years who completed measures of subjective age, learning self-efficacy, education, and memory performance. Analysis revealed that learning self-efficacy partially mediated the association between subjective age and memory performance. Further analysis found that the indirect associations between subjective age and memory through learning self-efficacy vary as a function of education. d‐Ribose‐l‐cysteine (DRLC) is an analogue of cysteine that has been shown to boost cellular antioxidant capacity by enhancing intracellular biosynthesis of glutathione (GSH). Deficiency of GSH has been implicated in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD), a neurodegenerative disorder associated with loss of memory. Thus, the use of antioxidants to prevent or retard the progression of memory deteriorations in persons with AD has been the focus of intense investigations. This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of DRLC on memory and scopolamine‐induced amnesia, acetyl‐cholinesterase activity, and oxidative stress in mice. Male Swiss mice were given oral administration of saline (10 ml/kg), DRLC (25, 50, and 100 mg/kg) or donepezil (1 mg/kg) 30 min before testing for memory performance using Y‐maze and object recognition models. Another set of mice were also pretreated orally with saline, DRLC (25, 50, and 100 mg/kg) or donepezil (1 mg/kg) but in combination with scopolamine (3 mg/kg, i.p.) daily for 7 days. Thirty minutes after treatment on Day 7, memory function was then evaluated. The brain levels of acetyl‐cholinesterase and oxidative stress parameters were assayed. DRLC significantly (p <.05) enhanced memory performance and attenuated scopolamine‐induced amnesia. Increased acetyl‐cholinesterase activity and oxidative stress, as shown by decreased antioxidant substrates (glutathione and catalase) and elevated malondialdehyde contents in mice with scopolamine amnesia were also attenuated by DRLC. Colours are mentioned many times in the Holy Qur’an. Some are mentioned as colours in general, and some of them in specific; yellow, white, black, red, green and blue. Each colour has its special connotations in the Holy Qur’an and among these colours, yellow and red are considered as warm colours. This study aimed to find the significance of warm colours in the Holy Qur’an and its relationship to human psychology; focusing on memory performance. This research had used an inductive approach in terms of selecting Quranic verses; in which yellow and red colour were mentioned. These verses were then analysed by referring to the books of exegetical considerations in order to know the implications of these colours’ usage, as well as referring to psychology books and scientific articles. The research found that yellow and red colour in the Holy Qur’an mostly indicate attracting attention or pleasing viewers. Some examples included the yellow colour in resemblance to the colour of the cow, attention to decay and destruction such as yellow colour in the withering plants, and attention to resurrection like the red colour resembling scene of the Day of Resurrection. This indication in the Holy Qur’an is consistent with psychologists’ discovery; warm colours such as red and yellow are more effective and attractive in the process of transferring information from external to sensory memory, and thus to short-term and long-term memory. Humans as social beings rely on information provided by conspecifics. One important signal in social communication is eye gaze. The current study (n = 93) sought to replicate and extend previous findings of attentional guidance by eye gaze in complex everyday scenes. In line with previous studies, longer, more and earlier fixations for objects cued by gaze compared to objects that were not cued were observed in free viewing conditions. To investigate how robust this prioritization is against top-down modulation, half of the participants received a memory task that required scanning the whole scene instead of exclusively focusing on cued objects. Interestingly, similar gaze cueing effects occurred in this group. Moreover, the human beings depicted in the scene received a large amount of attention, especially during early phases of visual attention, even though they were irrelevant to the current task. These results indicate that the mere presence of other human beings, as well as their gaze orientation, have a strong impact on attentional exploration. Data and analysis scripts are available at . Summary: Previous studies have highlighted that spermidine has the ability to trigger the important process of dissolving amyloid-beta plaques by autophagy. This manuscript focuses on the correlation of serum spermidine levels between age and between performance in mini-mental state examinations. It will serve as a premise for an ongoing multicentric placebo-controlled study, which focuses on the effect of oral spermidine supplementation on memory performance. Memory tests were carried out on 80 subjects aged 60–96 years old in 6 nursing homes in Styria. Blood samples were taken for the determination of spermidine concentration. The results showed a significant correlation between the spermidine concentration and the mini-mental state examination score (p = 0.025). On the basis of the dependence demonstrated it can be concluded that spermidine might be suitable as a biomarker for the diagnosis of neurocognitive changes (senile dementia or Alzheimer's disease). Objectives: This study aimed to explore whether experimentally induced younger subjective age can lead to better memory performance among Chinese older adults. Method: A total of 203 participants aged 60–84 years were randomly assigned to three groups. In the positive and neutral feedback groups, participants were told that their memory performance was better than and equivalent to the same-aged peers after an initial memory task, respectively, in contrast to no feedback in the control group. Participants then completed a second memory measure. Results: The results revealed that participants in the positive feedback group felt younger and showed a significant increase in memory performance, whereas participants in the neutral feedback group felt older but also showed a significant increase in memory performance. For participants in the control group, no significant changes in memory performance were observed. Conclusion: It seems that experimentally induced younger subjective age can lead to better memory performance among older adults, providing a promising strategy to maintain memory functioning in old age.
