The use of machine learning techniques to homogenize the effective behavior of arbitrary microstructures has been shown to be not only efficient but also accurate. In a recent work, we demonstrated how to combine state-of-the-art micromechanical modeling and advanced machine learning techniques to homogenize complex microstructures exhibiting non-linear and history dependent behaviors (Logarzo et al., 2021). The resulting homogenized model, termed smart constitutive law (SCL), enables the adoption of microstructurally informed constitutive laws into finite element solvers at a fraction of the computational cost required by traditional concurrent multiscale approaches. In this work, the capabilities of SCLs are expanded via the introduction of a novel methodology that enforces material symmetries at the neuron level, applicable across various neural network architectures. This approach utilizes tensor-based features in neural networks, facilitating the concise and accurate representation of symmetry-preserving operations, and is general enough to be extend to problems beyond constitutive modeling. Details on the construction of these tensor-based neural networks and their application in learning constitutive laws are presented for both elastic and inelastic materials. The superiority of this approach over traditional neural networks is demonstrated in scenarios with limited data and strong symmetries, through comprehensive testing on various materials, including isotropic neo-Hookean materials and tensegrity lattice metamaterials. This work is concluded by a discussion on the potential of this methodology to discover symmetry bases in materials and by an outline of future research directions.

Although deep autoencoders excel at extracting intricate features, their application in process monitoring is limited by the requirement for large sample sizes and interpretability of latent representations. This work presents a special deep learning structure named Siamese network to detect abnormal deviations in nonlinear dynamic processes. By leveraging the capability of Siamese architecture to process multiple inputs simultaneously, the training sample size expands exponentially, which enhances the learning potential of the model. Furthermore, a long short-term memory unit is integrated to enable the capture of long-term process dynamics. To refine the distribution of latent features extracted from diverse data types, a contrastive loss function is proposed, which strengthens the model's fault detection capabilities and enhances its interpretation of latent representations. Then T2 statistic is established on the latent space to perform fault detection. The effectiveness of the method is demonstrated through case studies on simulation processes and an industrial process.

PurposeWe determined over-the-counter magnifier usage rates by patients who newly presented for vision rehabilitation services, and sought to elucidate whether patients' ratings of over-the-counter magnifiers were associated with vision rehabilitation management strategies.MethodsRetrospective records reviews of 274 new vision rehabilitation patients seen between 2021-2023 were completed by three optometric providers at an ophthalmic academic center, college of optometry, and private practice.ResultsOver half (58%) of patients tried an over-the-counter magnifier. Accurate dynamic object manipulation in a robotic hand remains a difficult task, especially when frictional slip is involved. Prior solutions involve extensive data collection to train complex models to control the hand that do not necessarily generalize to other slip circumstances. Our approach focuses on direct slip sensing using a tactile sensor with a capacitive array, coupled with a programmable system on a chip, capable of mode switching and sampling rate adjustment. We characterize the sensor's capacity to sense slip features at higher speeds and introduce a novel methodology for estimating motions. Low-level sensor reprogramming that couples multiple taxels improves slip avoidance and reaction time during rapid slip onset events. The technology also tracks dominant surface vibration frequencies resulting from stick-slip cycles, estimating speed and acceleration of smooth flat surfaces. Using a parallel-jaw robotic gripper, we demonstrate dynamic repositioning of objects lacking trackable surface features within the hand. The goal of this investigation is to support faster reasoning and reflexes for dynamic dexterous robots that experience directional in-hand slip.

Osteoarthritis is characterized by enzymatic breakdown of the articular cartilage via the disruption of chondrocyte homeostasis, ultimately resulting in the destruction of the articular surface. Decades of research have highlighted the importance of inflammation in osteoarthritis progression, with inflammatory cytokines shifting resident chondrocytes into a pro-catabolic state. Inflammation can result in poor outcomes for cells implanted for cartilage regeneration. Therefore, a method to promote the growth of new cartilage and protect the implanted cells from the pro-inflammatory cytokines found in the joint space is required. In this study, we fabricate two gel types: polymer network hydrogels composed of chondroitin sulfate and hyaluronic acid, glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) known for their anti-inflammatory and prochondrogenic activity, and interpenetrating networks of GAGs and collagen I. Compared to a collagen-only hydrogel, which does not provide an anti-inflammatory stimulus, chondrocytes in GAG hydrogels result in reduced production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and enzymes as well as preservation of collagen II and aggrecan expression. Overall, GAG-based hydrogels have the potential to promote cartilage regeneration under pro-inflammatory conditions. Further, the data have implications for the use of GAGs to generally support tissue engineering in pro-inflammatory environments.

In the transition from fossil fuel to electrified heating, a concerning trend is emerging in certain regions of the US. Owners of buildings with gas-based systems leave them in place after adding heat pumps (HPs). Existing control solutions for these hybrid (dual fuel) systems are rudimentary and fall short of realizing the full carbon reduction potential of these systems. Model predictive control (MPC) is often regarded as the benchmark for achieving optimal control in integrated systems. However, in the case of small-medium commercial buildings (SMCBs), the control and communication infrastructure required to facilitate the implementation of such advanced controls is often lacking. This paper presents a field implementation of easy-to-deploy MPC for a dual fuel heating system consisting of HPs and a gas-fired furnace (GF) for SMCBs. The control system is deployed on an open-source middleware platform and utilizes low-cost sensor devices to be used for real SMCBs without major retrofits. We demonstrated this MPC in a real office building with 5 HPs and 1 GF for 2 months. The test results showed that MPC reduced 27% of cost while completely eliminating GF usage by shifting 23% of the thermal load from occupied-peak time to non-occupied-non-peak times.

Predictive high-fidelity modeling of wind turbines with computational fluid dynamics, wherein turbine geometry is resolved in an atmospheric boundary layer, is important to understanding complex flow accounting for design strategies and operational phenomena such as blade erosion, pitch-control, stall/vortex-induced vibrations, and aftermarket add-ons. The biggest challenge with high-fidelity modeling is the realization of numerical algorithms that can capture the relevant physics in detail through effective use of high-performance computing. For modern supercomputers, that means relying on GPUs for acceleration. In this paper, we present ExaWind, a GPU-enabled open-source incompressible-flow hybrid-computational fluid dynamics framework, comprising the near-body unstructured grid solver Nalu-Wind, and the off-body block-structured-grid solver AMR-Wind, which are coupled using the Topology Independent Overset Grid Assembler. Turbine simulations employ either a pure Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes turbulence model or hybrid turbulence modeling wherein Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes is used for near-body flow and large eddy simulation is used for off-body flow. Being two-way coupled through overset grids, the two solvers enable simulation of flows across a huge range of length scales, for example, 10 orders of magnitude going from O(μm) boundary layers along the blades to O(10 km) across a wind farm. In this paper, we describe the numerical algorithms for geometry-resolved turbine simulations in atmospheric boundary layers using ExaWind. We present verification studies using canonical flow problems. Validation studies are presented using megawatt-scale turbines established in literature. Additionally presented are demonstration simulations of a small wind farm under atmospheric inflow with different stability states.

Wind farm flow control represents a category of control strategies for achieving wind-plant-level objectives, such as increasing wind plant power production and/or reducing structural loads, by mitigating the impact of wake interactions between wind turbines. Wake steering is a wind farm flow control technology in which specific turbines are misaligned with the wind to deflect their wakes away from downstream turbines, thus increasing overall wind plant power production. In addition to promising results from simulation studies, wake steering has been shown to successfully increase energy production through several recent field trials. However, to better understand the benefits of wind farm flow control strategies such as wake steering, the value of the additional energy to the electrical grid should be evaluated-for example, by considering the price of electricity when the additional energy is produced. In this study, we investigate the potential for wake steering to increase the value of wind plant energy production by combining model predictions of power gains using the FLOw Redirection and Induction in Steady State (FLORIS) engineering wind farm flow control tool with historical electricity price data for 15 existing US wind plants in four different electricity market regions. Specifically, for each wind plant, we use FLORIS to estimate power gains from wake steering for a time series of hourly wind speeds and wind directions spanning the years 2018-2020, obtained from the ERA5 reanalysis dataset. The modeled power gains are then correlated with hourly electricity prices for the nearest transmission node. Through this process we find that wake steering increases annual energy production (AEP) between 0.4g% and 1.7g%, depending on the wind plant, with average increases in potential annual revenue (i.e., annual revenue of production, ARP) 4g% higher than the AEP gains. For most wind plants, ARP gain was found to exceed AEP gain. But the ratio between ARP gain and AEP gain is greater for wind plants in regions with high wind penetration because electricity prices tend to be relatively higher during periods with below-rated wind plant power production, when wake losses occur and wake steering is active; for wind plants in the Southwest Power Pool-the region with the highest wind penetration analyzed (31g%)-the increase in ARP from wake steering is 11g% higher than the AEP gain. Consequently, we expect the value of wake steering, and other types of wind farm flow control, to increase as wind penetration continues to grow.

Abstract: A computational approach is presented for optimizing new riblet surface designs in turbulent channel flow for drag reduction, utilizing Design-by-Morphing (DbM), Large Eddy Simulation (LES), and Bayesian Optimization (BO). The design space is generated using DbM to include a variety of novel riblet surface designs, which are then evaluated using LES to determine their drag-reducing capabilities. The riblet surface geometry and configuration are optimized for maximum drag reduction using the mixed-variable Bayesian optimization (MixMOBO) algorithm. A total of 125 optimization epochs are carried out, resulting in the identification of 3 optimal riblet surface designs that are comparable to or better than the reference drag reduction rate of 8 %. The Bayesian-optimized designs commonly suggest riblet sizes of around 15 wall units, relatively large spacing compared to conventional designs, and spiky tips with notches for the riblets. Our overall optimization process is conducted within a reasonable physical time frame with up to 12-core parallel computing and can be practical for fluid engineering optimization problems that require high-fidelity of computational design before materialization.

In recent years, with the growing number of EV charging stations integrated into the grid, optimizing the aggregated EV load based on individual EV flexibility has drawn aggregators’ attention as a way to regulate the grid and provide grid services, such as day-ahead (DA) demand responses. Due to the forecast uncertainty of EV charging timings and charging energy demands, the actual delivered demand response is usually different from the DA bidding capacity, making it difficult for aggregators to profit from the energy market. This paper presents a two-layer online feedback control algorithm that exploits the EV flexibility with controlled EV charging timings and energy demands. Firstly, the offline model optimizes the EV dispatch considering demand charge management and energy market participation, and secondly, model predictive control is used in the online feedback model, which exploits the aggregated EV flexibility region by reducing the charging energy based on the pre-decided service level for demand response in real time (RT). The proposed algorithm is tested with one year of data for 51 EVs at a workplace charging site. The results show that with a 20% service level reduction in December 2022, the aggregated EV flexibility can be used to compensate for the cost of EV forecast errors and benefit from day-ahead energy market participation by USD 217. The proposed algorithm is proven to be economically practical and profitable.

Recent work in reinforcement learning has leveraged symmetries in the model to improve sample efficiency in training a policy. A commonly used simplifying assumption is that the dynamics and reward both exhibit the same symmetry; however, in many real-world environments, the dynamical model exhibits symmetry independent of the reward model. In this letter, we assume only the dynamics exhibit symmetry, extending the scope of problems in reinforcement learning and learning in control theory to which symmetry techniques can be applied. We use Cartan's moving frame method to introduce a technique for learning dynamics that, by construction, exhibit specified symmetries. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the proposed method learns a more accurate dynamical model.

Abstract: In concurrent work, we introduced a novel robotic package delivery system latching intelligent modular mobility system (LIMMS). Each LIMMS end effector requires a small, lightweight latching mechanism for pre-manufactured containers, such as cardboard boxes. In order to effectively process a high volume of packages, aligning the latching mechanism quickly and reliably is critical. Instead of depending on highly accurate controllers for alignment, we propose a novel self-aligning rotational mechanism to increase the system’s tolerance to misalignment. The radial latching design consists of evenly spaced blades that rotate into slots cut into the box. When misaligned, the blades contact the edges of the engagement slots, generating a self-correcting force that passively centers the blades with the slot pattern. This paper introduces a mathematical framework with closed form expressions to quantify error tolerance for these mechanisms. Through our mathematical and optimization analyses, it is shown that a two-blade design can tolerate a maximum misalignment of three times the radius to the blade tips, much larger than commonly used designs with three or more blade-like contacts. Our approach can be generalized for a class of rotational latching mechanisms with any number of blades. Utilizing this theory, a design process is laid out for developing an optimal self-aligning rotational latching mechanism given desired parameters and task constraints. With this methodology, we designed, manufactured, and verified the effectiveness of both two-blade and three-blade self-aligning in practical experiments.

I argue that a surface emitting laser that remains single mode irrespective of its size, a scale-invariant laser, should of necessity also waste light at the edge. This is a fundamental departure from the Schawlow-Townes two-mirror strategy that keeps light away from mirrors and edges to preserve gain and minimize loss. The strategy was implemented in the recent discovery of the Berkeley Surface Emitting Laser (BerkSEL).

The problem of maintaining power system stability and performance after the failure of any single line in a power system (an “$N-1$ contingency”) is investigated. Due to the large number of possible $N-1$ contingencies for a power network, it is impractical to optimize controller parameters for each possible contingency a priori. A method to partition a set of contingencies into groups of contingencies that are similar to each other from a control perspective is presented. Design of a single controller for each group, rather than for each contingency, provides a computationally tractable method for maintaining stability and performance after element failures. The choice of number of groups tunes a trade-off between computation time and controller performance for a given set of contingencies. Results are simulated on the IEEE 39-bus and 68-bus systems, illustrating that, with controllers designed for a relatively small number of groups, power system stability may be significantly improved after an $N-1$ contingency compared to continued use of the nominal controller. Furthermore, performance is comparable to that of controllers designed for each contingency individually.

Tele-operated collaborative robots are used by many children for academic learning. However, as child-directed play is important for social-emotional learning, it is also important to understand how robots can facilitate play. In this article, we present findings from an analysis of a national, multi-year case study, where we explore how 53 children in grades K-12 (n = 53) used robots for self-directed play activities. The contributions of this article are as follows. First, we present empirical data on novel play scenarios that remote children created using their tele-operated robots. These play scenarios emerged in five categories of play: physical, verbal, visual, extracurricular, and wished-for play. Second, we identify two unique themes that emerged from the data-robot-mediated play as a foundational support of general friendships and as a foundational support of self-expression and identity. Third, our work found that robot-mediated play provided benefits similar to in-person play. Findings from our work will inform novel robot and HRI design for tele-operated and social robots that facilitate self-directed play. Findings will also inform future interdisciplinary studies on robot-mediated play.

This paper describes a synthesis technique that constrains a spatial serial chain into a single degree-of-freedom mechanism using planar six-bar function generators. The synthesis process begins by specifying the target motion of a serial chain that is parameterized by time. The goal is to create a mechanism with a constant velocity rotary input that will achieve that motion. To do this we solve the inverse kinematics equations to find functions of each serial joint angle with respect to time. Since a constant velocity input is desired, time is proportional to the angle of the input link, and each serial joint angle can be expressed as functions of the input angle. This poses a separate function generator problem to control each joint of the serial chain. Function generators are linkages that coordinate their input and output angles. Each function is synthesized using a technique that finds 11 position Stephenson II linkages, which are then packaged onto the serial chain. Using pulleys and the scaling capabilities of function generating linkages, the final device can be packaged compactly. We describe this synthesis procedure through the design of a biomimetic device for reproducing a flapping wing motion.

Binary pseudo-random array (BPRA) artifacts are useful devices for calibrating the instrument transfer function (ITF) of interferometric microscopes and other optical and non-optical surface and wavefront measurement instruments. The intrinsic white noise character of the power spectral density function of the artifact simplifies the deconvolution of the ITF from the measured power spectral density (PSD). However, resampling of the BPRA intrinsic artifact features with the measurement tool's specific sampling pattern modifies the white noise character of the intrinsic spectrum and needs to be accounted for in the ITF-based data deconvolution process. We have developed an analytic solution to the spectrum of a resampled one- and two- dimensional BPRA. The resultant nominal PSD function is a simple twoparameter cosine function with a period equal to the resampled pixel width. A transfer function model for interferometric microscopes that incorporates this function, along with an ITF that includes aliasing effects and variable numerical aperture (NA), wavelength, and obscuration factor, is used to fit to the BPRA PSDs measured by an interference microscope for a range of objective and zoom lens magnification combinations.

K-12 schools are the largest energy consumers in the public sector, with their HVAC energy consumption representing the largest portion of their total energy use. While transitioning these schools to grid-interactive HVAC system operation through advanced controls offers significant financial and environmental benefits, and model predictive control (MPC) has been identified as a promising solution to achieve that, very few MPCs are affordable and have been deployed in K-12 schools. This situation raises concerns about the unclear real-world benefits of MPC technology among facility managers and industries. To address this gap, this paper presents a low-cost MPC solution that requires minimal control infrastructure costs and a unique field demonstration at a K-12 school, conducted for both cooling and heating seasons. This work adopted a previously developed MPC and extended it for use in the school application. The MPC aims to coordinate multiple packaged units to eliminate unnecessary peaks and shift cooling or heating loads in response to grid signals based on load conditions, while maintaining thermostat temperatures within school-defined bounds. Throughout the field tests, the MPC achieved a 24% reduction in peak demand during the cooling season and shifted cooling or heating loads by up to 16% in response to the school's utility tariff, considering load conditions, while also allowing end-users to override thermostat setpoints. The paper also discusses the limitations of this study and future research directions for better performance of the MPC at K-12 schools.

This paper proposes a stochastic model for hybrid power plants participation in day-ahead electricity markets, considering uncertainty in market prices and renewable generation. Additionally, it presents a methodology to incorporate this hybrid participation into existing production cost models (PCM), allowing the analysis and market design of future systems with high penetration of hybrids. These developments are illustrated using a wind-battery hybrid located in New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) footprint.

Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) has a strong clinical association with the development of hip osteoarthritis (OA); however, the pathobiological mechanisms underlying the transition from focal impingement to global joint degeneration remain poorly understood. The purpose of this study is to use whole-genome RNA sequencing to identify and subsequently validate differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in femoral head articular cartilage samples from patients with FAI and hip OA secondary to FAI. Thirty-seven patients were included in the study with whole-genome RNA sequencing performed on 10 gender-matched patients in the FAI and OA cohorts and the remaining specimens were used for validation analyses. We identified a total of 3531 DEGs between the FAI and OA cohorts with multiple targets for genes implicated in canonical OA pathways. Quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction validation confirmed increased expression of FGF18 and WNT16 in the FAI samples, while there was increased expression of MMP13 and ADAMTS4 in the OA samples. Expression levels of FGF18 and WNT16 were also higher in FAI samples with mild cartilage damage compared to FAI samples with severe cartilage damage or OA cartilage. Our study further expands the knowledge regarding distinct genetic reprogramming in the cartilage between FAI and hip OA patients. We independently validated the results of the sequencing analysis and found increased expression of anabolic markers in patients with FAI and minimal histologic cartilage damage, suggesting that anabolic signaling may be increased in early FAI with a transition to catabolic and inflammatory gene expression as FAI progresses towards more severe hip OA. Clinical significance:Cam-type FAI has a strong clinical association with hip OA; however, the cellular pathophysiology of disease progression remains poorly understood. Several previous studies have demonstrated increased expression of inflammatory markers in FAI cartilage samples, suggesting the involvement of these inflammatory pathways in the disease progression. Our study further expands the knowledge regarding distinct genetic reprogramming in the cartilage between FAI and hip OA patients. In addition to differences in inflammatory gene expression, we also identified differential expression in multiple pathways involved in hip OA progression.

Syringe pump has been applied to actuate soft pneumatic robots. Most previous works focus on designs of the syringe pump, its applications, and improvement of its problems such as leaking air, inefficient motions, etc. This paper introduces dynamical modeling and parametric analysis of a syringe pump. The syringe pump is made of a commercial syringe and a linear actuator. The dynamic equation is derived from the motions of the linear actuator, the air dynamics in the syringe, and the airflow inside the soft actuator. Because of the high-elastic materials, the volume of the soft actuator is a time-varying parameter. Therefore, the variation of volume is estimated by the Kalman filter instead of relying on the traditional design method. The dynamic model is also utilized to select optimal parameters which are verified by the experiments for the syringe pump. Two system controllers are designed with and without consideration of the pressure dynamics. The controller considering pressure dynamics outperforms. This work shows the benefits of pressure dynamic of the syringe pump for both system design and advanced controller design.

This work presents a distributed algorithm for resolving cooperative multi-vehicle conflicts in highly constrained spaces. By formulating the conflict resolution problem as a Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning (RL) problem, we can train a policy offline to drive the vehicles towards their destinations safely and efficiently in a simplified discrete environment. During the online execution, each vehicle first simulates the interaction among vehicles with the trained policy to obtain its strategy, which is used to guide the computation of a reference trajectory. A distributed Model Predictive Controller (MPC) is then proposed to track the reference while avoiding collisions. The preliminary results show that the combination of RL and distributed MPC has the potential to guide vehicles to resolve conflicts safely and smoothly while being less computationally demanding than the centralized approach.

Abstract: Conventional mobile robots have difficulty navigating highly unstructured spaces such as caves and forests. In these environments, a highly extendable limb could be useful for deploying hooks to climb over terrain, or for reaching hard-to-access sites for sample collection. This article details a new form of a multimodal mobile robot that utilizes a novel tape spring limb named EEMMMa (elastic extending mechanism for mobility and manipulation). Its innovative U-shaped tape structure allows it to handle loads in tension as well as compression. It can also bend using mechanical multiplexing for a lightweight and compact design that is well suited for mobile robots. For mobility, the limb can extend prismatically to deploy grappling hook anchors to suspend and transport the main body, or even serve as legs. For manipulation, the limb can morph its shape to bend around or over obstacles, allowing it to retrieve distant objects or position cameras around corners. The EEMMMa-1 prototype detailed in this article successfully demonstrates climbing ladders and shelves in 1.5 body lengths per second, and can bend up to 100 deg. A simplified model of the bending kinematics is developed and analyzed. This article concludes by detailing future EEMMMa applications and theories to strengthen the model in future studies.

With the wide adoption of building automation system, and the advancement of data, sensing, and machine learning techniques, data-driven fault detection and diagnostics (FDD) for building heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems has gained increasing attention. In this paper, data-driven FDD is defined as those that are built or trained from data via machine learning or multivariate statistical analysis methods. Following this definition, this paper reviews and summarizes the literature on data-driven FDD from three aspects: process, systems studied (including the systems being investigated, the faults being identified, and the associated data sources), and evaluation metrics. A data-driven FDD process is further divided into the following steps: data collection, data cleansing, data preprocessing, baseline establishment, fault detection, fault diagnostics, and potential fault prognostics. Literature reported data-driven methods used in each step of an FDD process are firstly discussed. Applications of data-driven FDD in various HVAC systems/components and commonly used data source for FDD development are reviewed secondly, followed by a summary of typical metrics for evaluating FDD methods. Finally, this literature review concludes that despite the promising performance reported in the literature, data-driven FDD methods still face many challenges, such as real-building deployment, performance evaluation and benchmarking, scalability and transferability, interpretability, cyber security and data privacy, user experience, etc. Addressing these challenges is critical for a broad real-building adoption of data-driven FDD.

Abstract: Model reduction methods usually focus on the error performance analysis; however, in presence of uncertainties, it is important to analyze the robustness properties of the error in model reduction as well. This problem is particularly relevant for engineered biological systems that need to function in a largely unknown and uncertain environment. We give robustness guarantees for structured model reduction of linear and nonlinear dynamical systems under parametric uncertainties. We consider a model reduction problem where the states in the reduced model are a strict subset of the states of the full model, and the dynamics for all of the other states are collapsed to zero (similar to quasi‐steady‐state approximation). We show two approaches to compute a robustness guarantee metric for any such model reduction—a direct linear analysis method for linear dynamics and a sensitivity analysis based approach that also works for nonlinear dynamics. Using the robustness guarantees with an error metric and an input‐output mapping metric, we propose an automated model reduction method to determine the best possible reduced model for a given detailed system model. We apply our method for the (1) design space exploration of a gene expression system that leads to a new mathematical model that accounts for the limited resources in the system and (2) model reduction of a population control circuit in bacterial cells.

Multiple technological, social, and market factors of wind power are evolving rapidly. Most notably, significant wind turbine scaling is occurring and is forecasted to continue. While the larger turbines expected to be deployed in the future are more powerful and efficient, they are also expected to operate at higher sound levels and require larger setbacks than those installed in the last decade. These sometimes-competing deployment trends and impacts cannot be understood via simple extrapolations of past trends. This study analyzes the effect of these future larger turbines on wind turbine micro-siting, project-level power and energy density, and community noise impacts. Due to their taller heights, larger rotors, and higher sound power levels, future wind turbines will require larger setbacks from homes and greater inter-turbine spacing, resulting in fewer turbines deployed for a given land area. This research finds these changes more than offset the effect of the higher turbine sound emissions, significantly decreasing the average sound levels that wind plant hosting communities experience. Yet, simultaneously, plant layouts using future turbine designs also result in projects with higher installed capacities and annual energy output for a given land area. These increases will likely lead to increased tax benefits and local income in the community. The deployment of fewer turbines on a smaller number of parcels could have implications on siting flexibility and landowner payments.

As a result of their soft-charging and soft-switching capabilities, resonant switched-capacitor (ReSC) converters can achieve higher efficiencies and power densities than pure switched-capacitor (SC) converters. However, the terminal capacitors (i.e, the input and output capacitors) still consume a large volume in ReSC converters and represent the new bottleneck for converter miniaturization. Theoretically, when the terminal capacitances are reduced, an optimum clocking scheme that preserves multi-resonant operation can be calculated. In practice, this optimal operating point may not be precisely obtained due to circuit parasitics, passive component tolerance and derating. This paper demonstrates a closed-loop hysteretic control method that can dynamically track the zero current switching (ZCS) operating point and allow for a reduction in terminal filtering capacitors via multi-resonant operation. A 48-to-24-V ReSC converter prototype is designed and constructed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control method. The controller is demonstrated to successfully track the ZCS operating point, enabling over 70% reduction in terminal capacitor volume. In the case of reduced terminal capacitances, the controller achieves up to 44% reduction in power loss compared with the conventional open-loop control without ZCS autotuning.

Control hunting due to improper proportional–integral–derivative (PID) parameters in the building automation system (BAS) is one of the most common faults identified in commercial buildings. It can cause suboptimal performance and early failure of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment. Commercial fault detection and diagnostics (FDD) software represents one of the fastest growing market segments in smart building technologies in the United States. Implementation of PID retuning procedures as an auto-correction algorithm and integration into FDD software has the potential to mitigate control hunting across a heterogeneous portfolio of buildings with different BAS in a scalable way. This paper presents the development, implementation, and field testing of an automated control hunting fault correction algorithm based on lambda tuning open-loop rules. The algorithm was developed in a commercial FDD software and successfully tested among nine variable air volume boxes in an office building in the United States. The paper shows the feasibility of using FDD tools to automatically correct control hunting faults, discusses scalability considerations, and proposes a path forward for the HVAC industry and academia to further improve this technology.

Green's functions of fermions are described by matrix-valued Herglotz-Nevanlinna functions. Since analytic continuation is fundamentally an ill-posed problem, the causal space described by the matrix-valued Herglotz-Nevanlinna structure can be instrumental in improving the accuracy and in enhancing the robustness with respect to noise. We demonstrate a three-pronged procedure for robust analytic continuation called PES: (1) projection of data to the causal space; (2) estimation of pole locations; and (3) semidefinite relaxation within the causal space. We compare the performance of PES with the recently developed Nevanlinna and Carathéodory continuation methods and find that PES is more robust in the presence of noise and does not require the usage of extended precision arithmetics. We also demonstrate that a causal projection improves the performance of the Nevanlinna and Carathéodory methods. The PES method is generalized to bosonic response functions, for which the Nevanlinna and Carathéodory continuation methods have not yet been developed. It is particularly useful for studying spectra with sharp features, as they occur in the study of molecules and band structures in solids.

The next generation of high-power lasers enables repetition of experiments at orders of magnitude higher frequency than what was possible using the prior generation. Facilities requiring human intervention between laser repetitions need to adapt in order to keep pace with the new laser technology. A distributed networked control system can enable laboratory-wide automation and feedback control loops. These higher-repetition-rate experiments will create enormous quantities of data. A consistent approach to managing data can increase data accessibility, reduce repetitive data-software development and mitigate poorly organized metadata. An opportunity arises to share knowledge of improvements to control and data infrastructure currently being undertaken. We compare platforms and approaches to state-of-the-art control systems and data management at high-power laser facilities, and we illustrate these topics with case studies from our community.

In this article, a dual-stage positioning system for precisely tracking continuous scan and step scan profiles to meet the high-precision dynamic positioning requirements of space optical instruments is reported. A piezoelectric walking stage provides a long-stroke platform to which a short-stroke voice coil-actuated shuttle is mounted. The shuttle corrects for submicrometer deviations in the walking stage position and is designed with a low resonant frequency to passively reject disturbances produced by the walking stage. Both the walking stage and shuttle are instrumented with high-resolution interferometric encoders and a feedback system regulates the shuttle's position to achieve less than 7 nm RMS position error for constant velocity references of up to 0.5 mm/s. The shuttle is also capable of tracking step scan profiles with 10 ms settling times and 1.1 nm RMS position errors for steps up to 500 nm.

We develop a new resistive force theory based granular limit surface (RFT-GLS) method to predict and guide behaviors of forceful ground robots. As a case study, we harness a small mobile robotic system - MiniRQuad (296 g) - to 'walk-burrow-tug;' it actively exploits ground anchoring by burrowing its legs to tug loads. RFT-GLS informs the selection of efficient strategies to transport sleds with varying masses. The granular limit surface (GLS), a wrench boundary that separates stationary and kinetic behavior, is computed using 3D resistive force theory (RFT) for a given body and set of motion twists. This limit surface is then used to predict the quasi-static trajectory of the robot when it fails to withstand an external load. We find that the RFT-GLS enables accurate force and motion predictions in laboratory tests. For control applications, a pre-composed state space map of the twist-wrench pairs enables computationally efficient simulations to improve robotic anchoring strategies.

The traditional approach to planning the distribution grid has focused on reliability in the context of gradual and reasonably predictable load growth. Forecasts of load growth, combined with asset management practices, were used by system planners to identify upgrades to the system to maintain or improve reliability. The decisions, typically based within load flow analysis tools, included considerations about contingency scenarios and corporate forecasts (i.e., top-down predictions at a summary level of what would happen in a particular area that could impact load growth and behavior). Today, this traditional approach no longer fits all purposes.
