MASTER'S degree ,CORE competencies - Abstract
The inclusion of ethical competence in the training of master's degree students remains a challenge. It has important links to the professionalization process, but unevenness has been found in its development and implementation, and this appears to generate shortcomings in training processes. The aim of this study is to understand the meaning of ethical competence and to identify factors that facilitate its inclusion in master's degree programs. A multicentre phenomenological study was carried out at universities in Spain and Argentina. Students and faculty from ten master's degree programs in different subjects participated. Three broad overall categories emerged from our analysis: competencies related to the professional profile; factors in the professionalizing process; and training in ethical competence. These categories suggest that ethical competence is a core rather than an added value for any professional, thereby stressing the need to address its pedagogical importance in education. The literature shows that entrepreneurial education makes sense. It is evoking entrepreneurial intentions and activities in students. However, most of the literature focuses on entrepreneurial education in general, and there is not a clear evaluation of such education on the academic level. That is why this paper holds the focus on entrepreneurial master's degrees themselves, their structure, and effectiveness. Moreover, it analyses the employment, job satisfaction, and the connection between the education and professional life of entrepreneurial graduates. This quantitative study confirms that entrepreneurial graduates have a higher self-employment rate compared to others. In addition, they compete well with other graduates in employment while still pursuing their entrepreneurial intentions as intrapreneurs. The aim is to raise awareness about entrepreneurial education in Europe, to make it more competitive, especially now in these volatile times. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigated the relationships between the motivations of master's students and satisfaction with the programme. Participants included 978 students from two Spanish universities. The results showed that the characteristics of the master's programme explained the differences in the reasons for choice and student satisfaction. We found a positive relationship between academic satisfaction and the reasons for self-realization and personal growth. The results allow us to reconsider the process of student guidance and counselling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In chapter 1, this dissertation investigates how promotion policies impact advanced education attainment on employees throughout a career. Using administrative data from the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), I leverage a natural experiment where academic credentials were permanently masked from promotion consideration. I show the policy influenced the premium of a graduate degree for career advancement opportunities. I then exploit an event study and difference-in-differences design to find employees are 14 percentage points less likely to complete a master's degree when education credentials are no longer considered for promotion. I also show attendance at for-profit institutions declined substantially after the policy reform. In chapter 2, I examine workplace peer effects on advanced education attainment. Using administrative data from the DoD and conditional exogeneous assignment of employees to workplace, I provide empirical evidence that coworkers’ education investment behavior increases the likelihood of using Employer-Provided Educational Assistance (EPEA) benefits to start and eventually complete a graduate degree. In chapter 3, I analyze trainees' ordinal rank across cognitive and physical ability within an initial job training program. Using administrative data from the DoD and conditional random assignment of trainees to peer groups, I test whether rank effects vary across contemporaneous training and long-term career outcomes. I find cognitive ordinal rank, measured by an individual's score on the Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT), has a meaningful impact on completing initial training into the U.S. Air Force (USAF). I also show physical ordinal rank, measured by an individual's initial fitness score, also affects initial job training performance. Both sets of ranking effects impact follow-on disciplinary outcomes and vary by gender.

Background: Talent acquisition in regulatory affairs has been a continuing challenge now exaggerated by demographic shifts and expansion of regulatory requirements nationally and globally. Methods: Survey and interview methods were used to provide information on graduation rates, graduate characteristics, and enrollment trends in the 17 US regulatory programs that could be identified to offer graduate degrees in regulatory affairs or regulatory science. Results: US programs graduated approximately 522 MS and 4 doctoral students in 2018. About 70% of students attended programs in the Northeast; the remaining students were evenly split between programs in the Northwest and Southeast/Southwest. About half of the programs provided content by distance only. About 127 students were new entrants to the workforce; enrollments for this group most commonly leveled or decreased over the last 3 years. The primary challenge identified by most programs was the high tuition that discouraged participation by qualified candidates for the programs. Challenges were also reported when attracting international students because of tightening visa restrictions and consequent reluctance of industry to hire students with a temporary visa status. Conclusions: The small number of graduating regulatory professionals from US universities is alarming because it falls far short of needs estimates for positions in regulatory departments. The particularly low number of entry-level professionals seems unlikely to be adequate as unemployment rates tighten and experienced professionals become harder to attract. These shortfalls may be particularly hurtful to small companies unable to compete for experienced professionals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The United States Air Force (USAF) implemented an Advanced Academic Degree (AAD) masking policy for officer promotion boards at the end of 2014. This policy prevented promotion boards from viewing degree information in Officer Selection Records (OSRs) as part of an initiative to focus board members on assessing job performance. This research analyzed how this policy affected promotion outcomes for different subgroups of officers. Using data for active duty USAF officers from 2007 to 2019, we leveraged descriptive techniques and linear probability models to determine how promotion rates changed over time for officers meeting O-4 and O-5 promotion boards while in-the-zone for promotion. We determined that the promotion premium of an AAD reduced about 50 percent across O-4 and O-5 promotion boards. Additionally, we found that non-AAD holding rated officers became significantly more likely to promote to O-4 following policy implementation, relative to their counterparts in support career fields. These findings suggest that the AAD masking policy potentially affected the type and quality of officers promoted by the USAF after 2014., Outstanding Thesis, Captain, United States Air Force, Approved for public release. This paper illustrates the work of a course team at Southampton Solent University to establish a delivery model for an online distance master's degree. Working under the managerial constraint of ensuring that the course delivery is sustainably affordable, the focus was to develop a model that structures tutor to student engagement in such a way as to ensure the maintenance of a high standard of teaching and learning. This model is put forward as an approach that is applicable in a variety of contexts, and hence of value to course developers from other institutions investigating ways of effectively delivering online courses. A sample of predominantly African American psychology major baccalaureates from a historically Black university self-reported job types, salaries, and master’s degree completion. For this pre-2009 recession sample, we found that (a) the rates of employment were quite high; (b) most jobs were related to health, mental health, social work, and education; and (c) the average salary was comparable to national estimates. After controlling for GPA, completion of a master’s degree predicted substantially higher salaries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although the system of educational credentials differs in many important ways from country to country, all western countries have experienced a similar trend in the form of an increasing number of graduate degrees. Graduate degrees have also taken on a bewildering range of forms and content. As a consequence, not all graduate degrees have the same credibility and status in the labor market. The aim of this study is to discover how status differences among different kinds of master's degrees are justified within the dual system of Finnish higher education, and how these differences are experienced by graduates themselves. The qualitative data consist of interviews with 30 master's degree graduates and their accounts are narratively analyzed. Theories of educational credentialing are applied to reveal the complex linkage between graduate degrees and how organizational status and resources are hierarchically allocated to different groups of people. The demographic increase and high demand of animal protein confronts with a climatic crisis caused by human activity contamination. The current alimentary production systems, specially those of intensive stockbreeding, generate an important part of this contamination. Therefor, it is needed to find alimentary alternatives to face the future with a more sustainable form. The objective of this bibliographic research is to create a global view about how the human habit of eating edible insects (entomophagy), which is traditionally practised in some countries, could contribute to improve the production of high value protein in a more ecologic and sustainable form. The research has been realized analysing papers published in scientific journals or official institutions related with diet, and has focused specifically on three aspects: environmental impact, insect's nutritional values and relationship between entomophagy and malnutrition. The results obtained have shown environmental advantages of insect raising in front of other traditional livestock species like poultry, pork or beef. Moreover, their nutritional composition turns insects into an interesting product for human consumption, with a high content of protein, lipids and fibre. These features, together with the easiness of their raising and their high index of reproduction, also make insects a good product to fight malnutrition issues or to become a new way of subsistence for families. Nevertheless, more research is needed about various aspects of entomophagy, like his limitations, features of each species and the best conditions for their raising.

This paper aims to highlight the deficiencies in digital literacy education within official master´s programs for Spanish as a foreign language (SFL) teachers in Spain. A thorough literature review has been carried out that supports the theoretical framework in which this mixed research is based. Its low presence in the syllabi highlights the need to strengthen and expand digital literacy in professional development courses for SFL teachers and to reduce the curriculum content gap that separates it from linguistic literacy. Digital competence deserves a deeper treatment and a more visible position in the study plans. - Abstract
In Italy, motor and sports sciences have been in the academy since 2000 following the reform of the higher institutes of physical education, ISEF. Subsequently, with the implementation of the Bologna process in 2011, the first three-year degree courses and the first professors divided into motor sciences and sports sciences were born. After almost twenty years of development they are within the academy like other scientific knowledge. The study focuses on the numerical consistency of degree courses and professors and the evolutionary trends between them to observe the variations. To aim the correlations between the different categories of variables: three-year and master’s degree courses, professors and professors of physical education and sports sciences. The method is the archive search of official data in the ministerial database and the statistical analysis of them. The results show a significant correlation between the variables examined in relation to time, demonstration of a progressive development; moreover the correlations between all the examined variables are significant, further demonstration of a gradual development. It would be further useful to know the trends in the number of students and the trends of the degree courses and professors to check if there are significant correlations between them also for these trends.

- Abstract
This paper aims to present some challenges arising from the construction and consolidation of professional masters in the area of Teaching in Brazil. There is also a false perception on the part of the institutions that the professional master's degree can discredit them and that only the academic programs give prestige and promote the qualification of the university, which is a misunderstanding. To the detriment of this mistaken perception, documents such as the Capes Education Area Programs, which are organized in different proposals, constitute specific lines of research and prioritize the production of educational knowledge. Through qualitative research of an exploratory nature, we conclude that the diversity in the identity of professional masters is not only determined by its thematic area, but, fundamentally, by the great challenge of rigorously integrating research in its development process and to achieve the applicability of the results for transformation of the studied reality. From the above, we consider that historical-dialectical materialism can contribute to the epistemological understanding in the investigations of practices in educational spaces, since its ontological, axiological and gnosiological dimensions integrate a philosophy of transformation, which aims, through historical analysis and dialectic of reality, to achieve syntheses that take up, in another dimension, the initial knowledge, and aim, in the last resort, at social and collective transformation., Este artigo tem como objetivo expor alguns desafios decorrentes da construção e consolidação dos mestrados profissionais na área de Ensino no Brasil. Purpose – The purpose of the paper is to examine how a number of key themes are introduced in the Master's programme in Engineering for Sustainable Development, at Cambridge University, through student-centred activities. These themes include dealing with complexity, uncertainty, change, other disciplines, people, environmental limits, whole life costs, and trade-offs. Design/methodology/approach – The range of exercises and assignments designed to encourage students to test their own assumptions and abilities to develop competencies in these areas are analysed by mapping the key themes onto the formal activities which all students undertake throughout the core MPhil programme. The paper reviews the range of these activities that are designed to help support the formal delivery of the taught programme. These include residential field courses, role plays, change challenges, games, systems thinking, multi criteria decision making, awareness of literature from other disciplines and consultancy projects. An axial coding approach to the analysis of routine feedback questionnaires drawn from recent years has been used to identify how a student's own awareness develops. Also results of two surveys are presented which test the students' perceptions about whether or not the course is providing learning environments to develop awareness and skills in these areas. Findings – Students generally perform well against these tasks with a significant feature being the mutual support they give to each other in their learning. The paper concludes that for students from an engineering background it is an holistic approach to delivering a new way of thinking through a combination of lectures, class activities, assignments, interactions between class members, and access to material elsewhere in the University that enables participants to develop their skills in each of the key themes. Originality/value – The paper provides a reflection on different pedagogical approaches to exploring key sustainable themes and reports students' own perceptions of the value of these kinds of activities. Experiences are shared of running a range of diverse learning activities within a professional practice Master's programme. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper reports on the adjustment of East Asian Master's level students who came to study at a campus-based university in the UK during 2004-05. International students face challenges in respect to language proficiency, academic expectations and social participation. In this longitudinal study the experiences of a group of students from East Asian countries were surveyed, with a sample of eight students from five countries tracked through regular interviews. The paper describes the level of satisfaction that students experienced and the challenges they faced. It was found that students largely enjoyed their sojourn and achieved satisfactory levels of academic success. They encountered 'culture bumps' rather than culture shock. Adjustment was facilitated by adequate preparation, appropriate academic attainment and satisfying levels of social participation with other international students. It is suggested that these students were experiencing an 'international postgraduate student culture' rather than integration into local culture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Title. Social selection and professional regulation for Master’s degrees for nurses. Aim. This paper is a report of a study to understand the perspectives of two sets of stakeholders, namely clinical nursing providers and nursing academics, on how registered nurses should be selected for Master’s degree programmes. Background. The proliferation of taught Master’s programmes has led to concerns about a lowering of standards. Even with the expansion of professional Master’s programmes, they remain one of the least researched areas of higher education. Method. The sampling strategy was a combination of convenience and snowball sampling. In-depth interviews were conducted in 2006–07 with 15 stakeholders and data were subjected to thematic content analysis. Findings. There were differences in service providers’ and academics’ perceptions of access to Master’s level education for nurses. Service providers engaged in regulatory practices, as evidenced in the way in which potential candidates were judged to be suitable or not to undertake a Master’s-level education. Academic participants, in contrast, tended to have far fewer concerns about the career plans of applicants and were more likely to invoke discourses of academic educational admission practices. Conclusion. The health services need highly skilled, educated workers whose abilities and knowledge make an impact on the provision of effective patient and client care. This level of education can be achieved through continuing education of the professions by taught Master’s degrees. It is imperative that an effective partnerships between clinical service providers and academics are developed to promote understanding of their respective perceptions of admission to the degree. From the above, we consider that historical-dialectical materialism can contribute to the epistemological understanding in the investigations of practices in educational spaces, since its ontological, axiological and gnosiological dimensions integrate a philosophy of transformation, which aims, through historical analysis and dialectic of reality, to achieve syntheses that take up, in another dimension, the initial knowledge, and aim, in the last resort, at social and collective transformation.

This paper examines the labor-market returns to a new form of postsecondary vocational education, vocational master's degrees. We use individual fixed effects models on the matched sample of students and non-students from Finland to capture any time-invariant differences across individuals. Attendance in vocational master's programs leads to higher earnings of eight percent five years after entry even if selection on unobservables is twice as strong as selection on observables. Earnings gains are similar by gender and age, but they are marginally higher for health than for business or technology and trades. nonPeerReviewed

The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate career intentions of international master's students in hospitality and tourism management (HTM) in the United States. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a sample of 19 participants at two different U.S. institutions. Interview questions were designed to better understand students' career intentions upon graduation and the determinants behind the plans. Results indicated that student's career intention should include measures of career decision self-efficacy, academic and career outcome expectations, and career exploration intentions. Unique personal background (e.g., gender and marital status, length of time in the U.S.), industrial working experience (e.g., internships), and multiple external factors (e.g., school counselors, the booming tourism industry in developing countries) increase the diversity of career intentions of the target population.

The research goal was to describe the qualitative research art state of the master’s degree works at the UPEL-IPB. It was based on a descriptive-like documental research, in which 26 works were the analysis units. The quantitative content analysis, based on the fundamental categories that characterized the research qualitative designs. The information was processed by means of the descriptive statics represented by frequency distributions. The results which were obtained revealed that the qualitative research carried out in the master’s degree works, at the UPEL-IPB are quasi inductive, which comprehends reality from specific and experience time context. In relation to the speech construction, it is written in third impersonal person, showing the myth that this style of writing gives guarantee of the researcher’s objectivity. The obtained information made the criteria generation possible, which allow directing the design, elaboration, and evaluation of qualitative studies aiming at increasing the researching production quality into the different mastering sub-programs at the UPEL-IPB. The research is attached to the investigation time “Red de Investigación Cualitativa en Educación” from the Núcleo de Investigación, Docencia, Innovación y Tecnología at the UPEL-IPB.

- Abstract
This study analyzes the current financial management needs of the Navy in terms of the skills required for officers to perform effectively in a wide range of financial management subspecialty billets, and in terms of the development of these skills through Master's degree level education at the Naval Postgraduate School. The study identifies and defines the most required financial management skill and observes significant skill patterns and relationships between these skills and a set of billet 'identifier' categories. The identifier categories used are the billets' rank and designator requirements, and the billets' P or Q code. In addition, this study determines that the subspecialty's Educational Skill Requirements and the Naval Postgraduate School financial management curriculum provide adequate coverage of all of the Navy's P and Q coded financial management billets' most required financial management skills.
