Conclusion: Excluding the most susceptible families to B. xylophilus from the Galician P. pinaster breeding program would not result in a significant decrease in volume, stem form, or wood properties. The northern inland region of Portugal has experienced significant population decline due to the exodus of younger generations and an aging population. This has led to the abandonment of traditional activities in these territories, contributing to territorial abandonment, degradation of local economic conditions, increased social vulnerability, and a heightened risk of rural fires. The presence of communal lands, known as "baldios", is an important facilitator for implementing actions that revitalize local villages, making them more attractive to the community. Forests, which are abundant in the baldios of northern inland Portugal, have the potential to generate environmental, social, and economic value through carbon sequestration, job creation, population stabilization, and wealth generation in the villages. However, the viability of this asset as a driver for sustainable development depends on the forest management model implemented. This case study aims to demonstrate that different forest management models have varied impacts on sustainability indicators, particularly economic and environmental sustainability. Based on naturally regenerated forests in the Carvalhelhos baldio in the Tâmega Valley region, data were collected to simulate in software four management scenarios, varying the number (0 to 4) and age of thinnings until the final cut. The simulation allowed for the calculation of the following economic indicators: Internal Rate of Return (IRR), Net Present Value (NPV), and Net Profitability Index (NPI), as well as environmental indicators related to carbon capture and accumulation, such as Gross Carbon Accumulation, Net Carbon Accumulation, Carbon accumulated in dead and suppressed trees, and carbon balance per management model. The simulations indicate that, for the studied area, Scenario 2, which involves only one thinning, yielded the highest total wood volume (cubic meters per hectare) over the cycle, making it the most suitable for biomass production. Meanwhile, Scenario 4, with three thinnings, showed the best results for individual volume (cubic meters per tree), making it more suitable for producing higher-value logs. Scenario 5 presented the best economic results and carbon capture. In all simulations, Scenario 1 showed the worst performance in the analyzed indicators. It was found that the indicators varied among the studied crop plans, highlighting that the adoption of a silvicultural regime depends on the forest characteristics, objectives, exploitation conditions, and local population sensitivity to regional priorities. Wooden utility poles are crucial in supporting overhead telecommunication lines in Portugal. Maritime pine (Pinus pinaster Aiton) is the most common wood species used for this purpose. The durability of the poles is typically determined by the deterioration observed in their ground line. Aiming to reduce the use of new sound wooden poles, reducing the economic costs involved, and the environmental impacts, the reuse of those old wooden poles by removing the degraded part is one possible solution. This study aimed to develop and validate solutions with composed poles, specifically for the connections between the wood members, so that it is possible to more efficiently incorporate used parts into the remanufactured poles. Two types of connections were used: members joined by a cylindrical steel tube, and members joined by finger joints. The static bending moduli of elastic and rupture were tested. The mechanical properties of the reused wooden utility poles showed to be in line with the values of new sound wooden poles made of different wood species. Finally, both proposed solutions proved to be practical for use in the production of reused utility poles, which are mostly made from old timber poles.

Resin extraction from Pinus pinaster (maritime pine) trees was an important economic activity for most of the 20th century in Mediterranean forests, until the decrease in resin prices that led to their abandonment in the 1960s-1970s. Reduced tree growth is often observed after long periods of resin tapping, but it is unknown how these formerly tapped stands respond to recent climate warming and aridification. We sampled three historically tapped maritime pine stands in Teruel, eastern Spain, to understand differential growth and responses to climate in resin tapped and non-tapped trees. Using dendrochronological methods, we compared tree growth trends and responses to climate in tapped and non-tapped trees. Overall, tree growth was higher in resin tapped trees than in non-tapped trees, which were generally younger. However, tree growth decreased over time, increasing the negative effects of late spring temperatures, summer drought and reduced summer precipitation, with increased sensitivity to drought in tapped than non-tapped trees. Among tapped trees, those with larger wound area grew more than those less tapped, and were more sensitive to drought, particularly after the 80 s. Our results suggest that the legacy effects of previous management can constrain tree responses to climate change by increasing the sensitivity of tree growth to drought.

We investigated the influence of fire severity, logging of burnt wood, local ecological factors and their interaction on the natural regeneration, survival and growth of maritime pine (Pinus pinaster Ait.), following a fire that took place in 2005. During the period 2006–2020, a sample of 1900 seedlings were monitored, in which three post-fire treatments were applied: (1) Early logging (before seedling emergence); (2) Delayed logging (after emergence); and (3) No management. Multivariate semi-parametric and non-parametric techniques were used to model seedling survival, estimated density and growth of natural pine regeneration. Seedling survival was 31% with a mean density of more than 2000 seedlings/ha at the end of the study period. Logging before seedling emergence was positively related with pine survival and density. Delayed logging resulted in the lowest seedling density and regeneration. Fire severity had a negative influence on regeneration density. The findings indicate that site conditions and fire severity have a stronger influence on natural regeneration of maritime pine than subsequent post-fire management treatments. In order to ensure the presence of maritime pine in pure or mixed stands, silvicultural work is required to control competition from other species and reduce the risk of new wildfires. Wildfires act as a selection force threatening the sustainability and diversity of forest genetic resources. Few studies have investigated the genetic effects of forest wildfires. Species with perennial canopy seed banks in serotinous cones and soil or with long-distance seed and pollen dispersion can preserve genetic diversity and population differentiation under normal fire regimes. To test this hypothesis, we characterised molecularly Pinus pinaster Aiton (maritime pine) seedlings produced from seeds sampled in post-fire, naturally regenerated populations that had been subject to different fire regimes in the North of Portugal using inter-simple sequence repeats (ISSRs). The sampled populations burned once (A), twice (B), or three (D) times or had no prior fire history (C, control). Given the globally low seed germination ability, only 104 plantlets regenerated and were described. These plantlets were grouped according to their origin population. Intra-group ISSR polymorphism ranged from 72.73% (B) to 89.41% (D), revealing genetic differentiation among groups originating from populations that had experienced different fire recurrence. Overall, the unaffected genetic diversity of the regenerated plantlets allowed us to accept the hypothesis. Our findings enhance our understanding of the species ability to withstand fire-induced challenges and their responses to wildfires, guiding conservation endeavours and forest management strategies to bolster ecosystem resilience. These differences in resistance were paralleled by differences in some constitutive chemical defenses. Populations from the southeastern Iberian Peninsula displayed higher resistance than northern populations. Context The presence of the pinewood nematode (PWN), Bursaphelenchus xylophilus (Steiner and Buhrer), in Portugal threatens Mediterranean pine species such as Pinus pinaster Aiton. Aims We have focused on assessing the resistance of P. pinaster populations to B. xylophilus, looking for any relationship between the PWN resistance and some constitutive chemical defenses and geoclimatic parameters. Methods Two-year-old seedlings from 32 provenances and two seed orchards were evaluated in an experiment of artificial inoculation following a randomized complete block design under greenhouse conditions. We measured growth-related traits, response to B. xylophilus inoculations, and constitutive chemical compounds in needles of the evaluated seedlings and compiled geoclimatic data for each population. Mixed models, nonparametric tests, correlations, and PCA were used to analyze the data. Results Survival, wilting symptoms, morphological traits, and nematode density varied significantly among populations. Lower concentrations of constitutive polyphenols, lipid-soluble substances, and tannins were related to higher PWN resistance. Populations from the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula showed higher survival rates than those from further north. Additionally, we observed that populations to warm, dry climates showed higher resistance to B. xylophilus than populations originating from humid, temperate climates. Conclusion Higher susceptibility to PWN is related to lower growth traits, to lower levels of certain constitutive chemical compounds, and to adaptations to harsher climate.

Resin is a renewable forest resource that can increase the economic value of some forests in rural areas. Resin production is associated with climatic conditions. However, its impact on trees' growth remains unclear. Here, we studied radial growth in six Portuguese Pinus pinaster forests that had been resin tapped for 5–7 years along a latitudinal and climatic gradient to understand whether resin tapping affects tree growth, and how it is affected by climate, stand and tree traits. Tree-ring width (TRW) on tapped and untapped trunk sides was compared before and during the tapping period. Tree-ring width decreased in the three youngest populations (< 30 years), with no changes in older populations (> 40 years), while TRW increased after resin harvesting began in the oldest stand (> 55 years). Annual resin-tapping impact (RTI), calculated as the ratio between TRW during tapping years and the 5-year average TRW before tapping, was below and above 1 in the younger and older stands, respectively. Among stand characteristics and across sites, RTI was negatively correlated with tree competition and positively correlated with TRW, cambial age, and tree height. Climatic conditions had a minor role on tree growth response to resin tapping. Our main conclusion is that the effect of resin extraction on growth is age-dependent. Our results encourage the co-production of resin and wood on maritime pine stands over 40 years old where resin extraction impact on growth is negligible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Key message: Black pine and Maritime pine exhibit considerable differences in growth phenology across elevation belts with a 1-month delay for xylogenesis and increasing growth rates from low, mid to high elevations. Investigating seasonal wood formation is crucial to understand tree growth responses to climate impact. The present study quantifies the variability of xylogenesis along an elevation gradient on the Mediterranean island of Corsica, where two native pine species (Pinus nigra Arnold ssp. laricio Maire and Pinus pinaster Aiton) grow from the upper tree line to sea level, partly in sympatry. We extracted microcores from 35 trees at 5 sites along an East–West transect from the coasts (10 m asl) to the island's central mountain ridge (1600 m asl) during bi-weekly sampling campaigns between 2017 and 2019. We applied generalised additive models to detect radial growth differences in elevation and species along with minimum temperatures for growth initiation. We found that trees in low elevations experienced over 2 months longer growth periods with higher maximum growth rates than in high elevations. The results show a 1-month delay for the beginning of tracheid formation between the low, mid and high-elevation belts but comparable timing for its termination. At the sites where both species co-occur, P. nigra accumulates more radial cells in a shorter time than P. pinaster. Trees at the two contrasting coastal sites have similar growth period lengths, but exhibit a time shift of over a month. Minimum temperatures around growth initiation vary between 3.1 °C for P. nigra and 9.9 °C for P. pinaster. These findings emphasise the high plasticity in the growth behaviour of one of the most widespread tree genera in Mediterranean and temperate zones. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The forest inventory plays a crucial role in forest management planning, and it is the first step in planning actions for forest production. However, conducting an inventory can be expensive and complex. Forest inventory applications on smartphones have emerged as an alternative to traditional methods and they aim to make field data collection more accessible to non-professionals while ensuring accuracy in determining the volume of wood in a given area. This study evaluates the effectiveness of the Katam, Arboreal, and Trestima applications compared to traditional data collection methods. The study focuses on assessing the stand density and diameter of sampled trees—two key variables that are assessed in forest inventories. Two species, maritime pine (Pinus pinaster Aiton) and Eucalyptus spp. (mainly Eucalyptus globulus and Eucalyptus nitens), were used to evaluate the performance of the methods, with assessments performed in the stands of diverse dendrometric characteristics, specifically those regarding the tree age, stand density, and topographic conditions (flat or sloping terrain). For the purpose of comparison, goodness-of-fit statistics (R2, RMSE, and BIAS) were calculated, and an analysis of the diameter distribution and comparison of the mean diameter, number of trees per hectare, and basal area were performed. In general, the applications were accurate, and the average basal area did not differ significantly from the traditional method. The diameter measurements showed good accuracy. The accuracy of the applications varied depending on the terrain and forest characteristics, with the applications performing better in areas with flat terrain, as well as with older forests that were regular and had low under-cover density. In contrast, the applications performed worse in younger, irregular forests with sloping terrain, high tree density, and those with a great deal of understory vegetation. The applications still need to evolve in evaluating other important variables (such as tree height or volume) as they are currently estimated from auxiliary variables through mathematical equations. Key message: Root-quakes occurring during the overturn of a maritime pine can be observed in situ using a seismic array, while estimations of epicenters of seismic events can help to locate the failure of the root-system over time. The mechanical response of maritime pine was investigated with a series of experiments performed in situ. During the overturning of four specimens, a seismic array was deployed at the ground surface to continuously monitor the micro-seismicity associated with the failure of their root-system. We identified seismic events during the traction process applied to each tree. A threshold force value and a significant duration of the traction process seem to be needed in order for cracks to occur, and for seismic events to be recorded. For all trees, we can identify tens of seismic events, especially during the most advanced stages of the experiments, prior to complete failure of the root-system. Using pairs of geophones and seismic intensity ratios, we can localize the epicenters of most of the events within the seismic network. According to the sensitivity of the array, all epicenters are roughly localized within a 1 square-meter area. Through repeated cycles of selection and recombination, tree breeding programs deliver genetically improved varieties for a range of target characteristics such as biomass production, stem form, resistance to biotic stresses, wood properties, etc. However, in the context of increased drought and heat waves, it is not yet known whether growth performance will impede drought resistance. To address this question, we compared the hydraulic properties, such as hydraulic efficiency and hydraulic safety, in four varieties over successive varieties of genetically improved maritime pines (i.e. Pinus pinaster Aït.) for growth and stem form. We measured 22 functional traits related to hydraulic efficiency, hydraulic safety, xylem anatomy and wood density. We found that improved varieties presented higher hydraulic conductivity with larger tracheid lumen size and tracheid lumen fraction, and smaller wall thickness reinforcement and tracheid density, but not at the cost of reduced embolism resistance. The reported absence of trade-off between hydraulic conductivity and embolism resistance is a strong asset to improve biomass productivity, through increased hydraulic efficiency, without impacting drought resistance, and should enable new maritime pine varieties to cope with a drier climate. Our study is one of the first to reveal the hydraulic mechanisms over successive varieties of genetic improvement for tree growth. This study focused on bio-oil production by thermochemical liquefaction. For the reaction, the burnt pine heartwood was used as feedstock material, 2-Ethylhexanol (2-EHEX) was used as a solvent, p-Toluenesulfonic acid (pTSA) was used as a catalyst, and the solvent for washing was acetone. The procedure consisted of a moderate-acid-catalysed liquefaction process, and it was applied at three different temperatures, 120, 140, and 160 °C, and at 30, 105, and 180 min periods with 1%, 5.5%, and 10% (m/m) catalyst concentration of overall mass. Optimal results showed a bio-oil yield of 86.03% and a higher heating value (HHV) of 36.41 MJ/kg, which was 1.96 times more than the HHV of the burnt pine heartwood. A reaction surface methodology (Box–Behnken design) was performed for the liquefaction reaction optimisation. Reaction temperature, reaction time and catalyst concentration were chosen as independent variables. The obtained model showed good results with a high adjusted R-squared (0.988) and an excellent p-value (less than 0.001). The liquefied products were characterised by Fourier Transformed Infrared (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and also Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was carried out to validate the impact of the morphological changes on the surface area of the solid samples. This study shows an excellent opportunity to validate a method to upcycle woody wastes via acid-catalysed liquefaction. Resin or gum is secreted by conifers, mainly members of the genus Pinus, in response to physical and/or chemical stimulation, which can be induced by tapping live trees, i.e., by making repeated wounds in the trees. Resin production could potentially complement timber production (the main economic activity) in pine stands in Galicia (NW Spain). In addition, the particular characteristics of Galician woodlands (smallholdings, sloping land, presence of shrubs, high density of trees) imply different yields and costs than in pine stands dedicated to resin production in other parts of Spain. Therefore, a specific regional management model that is different from the traditional model established for other resin producing areas in the Iberian Peninsula is required. In this study, resin tapping was applied in each of the three years before the trees were felled, in two different locations, with one or two faces tapped and wounds of two different widths (12 and 16 cm) made across the face(s). Tapping two faces yielded more resin than tapping a single face, thus confirming the study hypothesis. When only one face was tapped, the plot location acquired greater importance, with production being higher in the location characterised by a higher mean annual temperature. Increasing the width of the wound did not always increase the amount of resin obtained per tree, which depended on the number of faces open: when two faces were tapped, increasing the width of the wound increased resin production in both locations in each of the three years of the trial. The weather conditions in each year masked the effect of the tapping season, and production did not follow any particular trend over time. The importance of the local weather conditions in the study areas and the environmental conditions in each year are discussed. Climate change will increase the frequency of drought, heat waves, and wildfires. We intended to analyse how fire recurrence and/or induced water stress can affect seed germination and root cell division in Pinus pinaster Aiton. Seeds from stands with no prior fire history and from post-fire regeneration (in areas burnt once, twice, and thrice) in northern Portugal were germinated in distilled water (control) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) to simulate water stress for four weeks, followed by a recovery period. Roots were analysed cytogenetically. The germination index of the Pinus pinaster seeds was not statistically influenced by the induction of osmotic stress, nor by the fire recurrence of the stands. The mean germination time (MGT) was 10–29 days and 1–36 days for the stress and recovery periods, respectively, and increased with PEG concentration. The 20% PEG treatment inhibited root growth after germination. The 10% PEG treatment induced a high frequency of cytogenetic anomalies, mostly in the sites which experienced fire exposure. While fire recurrence did not affect the germination rate, it seemed to reduce the water stress response, negatively impacting cell division and impair root growth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Maritime pine (Pinus pinaster Ait.) covers vast areas and is of economic importance in southwestern Europe, particularly in Galicia (NW Spain). Galicia is a heterogeneous region with an Atlantic climate in the coast and a Mediterranean-like climate in the inland, where forest reproductive materials (FRM) with proper adaptation, productivity and timber quality are not available. Thus, there is a need for tailored FRM recommendations for reforestation in this region. P. pinaster is particularly sensitive to environmental variation and shows significant intraspecific genetic variability in this sensitivity, so understanding population responses to environmental variation becomes crucial for proper selection of FRM. Taking advantage of volume growth and stem straightness 13 years after planting, assessed on c. 7500 trees from 25 P. pinaster populations established in seven common gardens across inland Galicia, we analyzed intraspecific variation in sensitivity to climate, geographic, edaphic and site quality factors. We used Mantel correlations and factorial regression models to distinguish the environmental parameters explaining the observed population × site interaction. We also estimated population phenotypic plasticity across sites and the existing genetic relationship between growth and stem straightness to define the optimal selection strategy for productivity purposes. Results showed a quantitatively significant population × site interaction for growth whereas it was almost negligible for stem straightness. In the case of growth, no specific environmental factor was able to explain the population relative performance across test sites, being site quality the only significant factor but with low power to describe the patterns found. Population differences were maximized in higher site quality conditions, where the largest gains from planting selected populations would be expected. Tree growth and straightness were not genetically correlated. Based on these results, subdividing inland Galicia for deployment of P. pinaster FRM throughout specific selections for each subregion is not recommended. Selecting FRM based on average growth and its phenotypic stability should be also avoided, as both properties were negatively correlated. We recommend selecting FRM based on the results from high quality sites, where Atlantic origin populations with high levels of genetic improvement showed the fastest growth. The inclusion of selection criteria based on stem straightness did not alter recommendations given that fast growing FRM showed intermediate or slightly above-average straightness. The limited explanatory power of climate factors for the population × site interaction prevents adjusting recommendations in light of the projected climate change. • P. pinaster FRM did not exhibit stable good average growth across inland Galicia. • G×E interaction was statistically significant for growth but not for stem straightness. • We do not recommend subdividing inland Galicia for the deployment of P. pinaster FRM. • We advise planting genetically improved Atlantic FRM across inland Galicia. Population response functions based on climatic and phenotypic data from common gardens have long been the gold standard for predicting quantitative trait variation in new environments. However, prediction accuracy might be enhanced by incorporating genomic information that captures the neutral and adaptive processes behind intrapopulation genetic variation. We used five clonal common gardens containing 34 provenances (523 genotypes) of maritime pine (Pinus pinaster Aiton) to determine whether models combining climatic and genomic data capture the underlying drivers of height growth variation and thus improve predictions at large geographical scales. The plastic component explained most of the height growth variation, probably resulting from population responses to multiple environmental factors. The genetic component stemmed mainly from climate adaptation and the distinct demographic and selective histories of the different maritime pine gene pools. Models combining climate of origin and gene pool of the provenances as well as height-associated positive-effect alleles (PEAs) captured most of the genetic component of height growth and better predicted new provenances compared with the climate-based population response functions. Regionally selected PEAs were better predictors than globally selected PEAs, showing high predictive ability in some environments even when included alone in the models. Wildfires are a major environmental issue that have an impact on land degradation. Remote sensing spectral indices provide valuable information for short-term mitigation and rehabilitation after wildfires. A study area in the Centre inland of Portugal occupied with Maritime pine and Eucalypts forests and affected by wildfires in 2003, 2017 and 2020 was used. The aims of the study were twofold: (1) to compute the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and with forest inventory data derivate a Maritime pine production model, differentiate evergreen coniferous forests (e.g., Maritime pine), evergreen broadleaved forests (e.g., Eucalypts), and shrubland, and monitor vegetation and its post-fire recovery; and (2) to compute the Normalized Burn Ratio (NBR) difference between pre-fire and post-fire dates for burn severity levels assessment. The plots of a previous forest inventory were used to follow the NDVI values in 2007 and from 2020 to 2022. An aerial coverage in 2007 and the Sentinel-2 imagery in 2020–2022 were used. Linear models fitted maritime pine production with the transformed NDVI by age, showing a fitting efficiency of 60%. The stratification of cover types by stand development stage and fire occurrence was possible using the NDVI time curve, which also showed the impact of fire and of low precipitation. Cover types were ranked by decreasing NDVI values as follows: mature Eucalypts plantations, young Maritime pine regeneration, mature Maritime pine, young Eucalypts plantations, Strawberry tree shrubland, Eucalypts plantations post-fire, Maritime pine post-fire, tall shrubland, and short shrubland. Vegetation post-fire recovery was lower in higher burn severity level areas. Maritime pine areas have lost their natural regeneration capability due to the wildfires' short cycles. The soil microbiome plays an important role in forest functioning. However, the impact of drought-induced dieback and tree death on soil microbial biomass, community structure, and functional composition is unknown. We also lack understanding on how soil microbiota varies seasonally in such declining stands. We used Phospholipid Fatty Acids (PLFA) analysis to quantify soil microbial biomass and study its seasonal changes in three Mediterranean forests showing dieback and dominated by three pine species (Pinus halepensis Mill, Pinus pinaster Ait. and Pinus sylvestris L.). We also measured microclimatic parameters and soil physical and chemical parameters under trees with different vigor, assessed as canopy defoliation degree, and related them to seasonal changes in the soil microbial community. We found marked differences in soil microbial community structure, total biomass, and the relative abundance of major functional groups among forests. First, soil microbial biomass peaked either in the dry summer (P. halepensis) or in autumn (P. pinaster and P. sylvestris). Accordingly, the relative abundance of most functional groups, excluding Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, displayed substantial variation between seasons. In addition, the relative abundance of fungi and Gram-positive bacteria exhibited an opposite pattern compared to actinomycetes and Gram-negative bacteria. Second, soil physical and chemical parameters had a significant impact on within-site PLFA variation, although their influence was less important than that of seasonal variation. Third, differences between defoliated and healthy trees were minor and restricted to averaged ratios between different PLFA markers. Overall, the structure, biomass and relative abundance of major functional groups of the soil microbiome vary considerably among stand types and seasons in forests showing ongoing dieback and high mortality. However, while the seasonal dynamics show predictable patterns, which should be accounted for in future studies, the within-site variation is highly variable and mainly depends on soil physical and chemical parameters., (Copyright © 2024. The forest inventory plays a crucial role in forest management planning, and it is the first step in planning actions for forest production. However, conducting an inventory can be expensive and complex. Forest inventory applications on smartphones have emerged as an alternative to traditional methods and they aim to make field data collection more accessible to non-professionals while ensuring accuracy in determining the volume of wood in a given area. This study evaluates the effectiveness of the Katam, Arboreal, and Trestima applications compared to traditional data collection methods. The study focuses on assessing the stand density and diameter of sampled trees—two key variables that are assessed in forest inventories. Two species, maritime pine (Pinus pinaster Aiton) and Eucalyptus spp. (mainly Eucalyptus globulus and Eucalyptus nitens), were used to evaluate the performance of the methods, with assessments performed in the stands of diverse dendrometric characteristics, specifically those regarding the tree age, stand density, and topographic conditions (flat or sloping terrain). For the purpose of comparison, goodness-of-fit statistics (R2, RMSE, and BIAS) were calculated, and an analysis of the diameter distribution and comparison of the mean diameter, number of trees per hectare, and basal area were performed. In general, the applications were accurate, and the average basal area did not differ significantly from the traditional method. The diameter measurements showed good accuracy. The accuracy of the applications varied depending on the terrain and forest characteristics, with the applications performing better in areas with flat terrain, as well as with older forests that were regular and had low under-cover density. In contrast, the applications performed worse in younger, irregular forests with sloping terrain, high tree density, and those with a great deal of understory vegetation. The applications still need to evolve in evaluating other important variables (such as tree height or volume) as they are currently estimated from auxiliary variables through mathematical equations.

Seed production in Pinus pinaster Aiton is not usually considered a limiting factor for natural regeneration; instead, seed weight is a more limiting factor in successful pine recruitment. Divergent relationships between seed weight and germination rate were previously observed amongst maritime pine populations of central coastal Portugal. The present study followed cone-to-seed and seed-to-seedling approaches to decrease intra-specific variability and clarify the impact of cone size and seed mass on seedling recruitment. The main objectives of this study were (1) to determine and compare the mass of cones and seeds of three maritime pine populations located along a geographic gradient along the coastal center of Portugal and (2) to clarify the relations thereof between cone and seed traits with germination phenology and initial seedling growth. Results demonstrated that heavier cones tended to generate more mature seeds, but not necessarily heavier ones, although seed weight was suggested to be an indicator of robust seedlings. The outcomes of this study reinforce the great intra-population variability of maritime pine, showing the ecology of this species and its ability to adapt to various environments successfully. Pinewood nematode (PWN, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus) is the causal agent of pine wilt disease (PWD), which severely affects Pinus pinaster stands in southwestern Europe. Despite the high susceptibility of P. pinaster, individuals of selected half-sib families have shown genetic variability in survival after PWN inoculation, indicating that breeding for resistance can be a valuable strategy to control PWD. In this work, RNA-seq data from susceptible and resistant plants inoculated with PWN were used for SNP discovery and analysis. A total of 186,506 SNPs were identified, of which 31 were highly differentiated between resistant and susceptible plants, including SNPs in genes involved in cell wall lignification, a process previously linked to PWN resistance. Fifteen of these SNPs were selected for validation through Sanger sequencing and 14 were validated. To evaluate SNP-phenotype associations, 40 half-sib plants were genotyped for six validated SNPs. Associations with phenotype after PWN inoculation were found for two SNPs in two different genes (MEE12 and PCMP-E91), as well as two haplotypes of HIPP41, although significance was not maintained following Bonferroni correction. SNPs here detected may be useful for the development of molecular markers for PWD resistance and should be further investigated in future association studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Maritime pine (Pinus pinaster) is a forest species of great ecological and economic interest in the European Union, and especially in the Iberian Peninsula. Currently, one of the main threats this species has to face is the spread of the quarantine pathogenic fungus (A2 list) Fusarium circinatum , causal agent of pine pitch canker disease. Since one of the main strategies for the control of the disease is the use of resistant clones, it is necessary to carry out extensive work on the susceptibility analysis of several P. pinaster populations against F. circinatum. To this end, we have studied 35 P. pinaster populations located throughout the natural distribution range. After inoculation with F. circinatum spores, the susceptibility of all populations was studied, correlating it with their morphological traits (height and stem diameter) and relating it with the climate of origin. The results obtained reported significant differences among populations in both the morphological traits and susceptibility to the disease, with a negative correlation between height and susceptibility. With respect to the climate of origin, a negative correlation between continental climate and resistance was established. Therefore, populations with the indicated characteristics could be selected for the establishment of programs of breeding for resistance to control the spread of F. circinatum in P. pinaster forests. ● P. pinaster forests have great ecological and economic importance in the EU. ● CFP disease threatens the survival of P. pinaster in the Iberian Peninsula. ● To find resistant clones, extensive susceptibility studies must be developed. ● Altitude is negatively correlated with susceptibility to the disease. ● Continental climate of origin correlates negatively with disease resistance. A decade of genetic association studies in multiple organisms suggests that most complex traits are polygenic; that is, they have a genetic architecture determined by numerous loci, each with small effect‐size. Thus, determining the degree of polygenicity and its variation across traits, environments and time is crucial to understand the genetic basis of phenotypic variation. We applied multilocus approaches to estimate the degree of polygenicity of fitness‐related traits in a long‐lived plant (Pinus pinaster Ait., maritime pine) and to analyse this variation across environments and years. We evaluated five categories of fitness‐related traits (survival, height, phenology, functional, and biotic‐stress response) in a clonal common‐garden network planted in contrasted environments (over 20,500 trees). Most of the analysed traits showed evidence of local adaptation based on Qst–Fst comparisons. We further observed a remarkably stable degree of polygenicity, averaging 6% (range of 0%–27%), across traits, environments and years. We detected evidence of negative selection, which could explain, at least partially, the high degree of polygenicity. Because polygenic adaptation can occur rapidly, our results suggest that current predictions on the capacity of natural forest tree populations to adapt to new environments should be revised, especially in the current context of climate change. The purpose of this work was to establish the experimental design for the application of maritime pine (Pinus pinaster Aiton subsp. atlantica) bark extracts, as a natural food additive with antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, in the production lines of two cured-smoked pork products, a salami-like product and smoked belly, aiming to extending their shelf-life. The process flow diagram of each product was drawn, describing, in detail, how the product will move during the process steps including the relationship between major components and how the material flows through the various steps and components. The production steps better adjusted to extract addition were selected based on products characteristics. The amount of extract to be added were also determined according to the desired antioxidant performance. The set of analyses to be performed during products shelf-life was defined. The success of forest management towards achieving desired outcomes depends on various factors and can be improved through forest planning based on optimization approaches. Regardless of the owner type (state, private or common land) and/or governance model, the number of owners or management bodies considered in most studies is low, typically involving one owner/management body or a very small group. This study extends the approach of formulating a Forest Management Plan (FMP) to a large forest area, consisting of areas with different management bodies. The FMP model returns the harvest schedule that maximizes the volume of wood harvested during the planning horizon, while ensuring (1) sustainability and environmental constraints at the overall scale and (2) independent revenues for each management body. The FMP is tested in a real forested area, consisting of 22 common lands, governed by local communities for a planning period of 30 years. The results show that our approach is appropriate for several management bodies. When evaluating the impact of grouping areas (and their owner bodies) on the total volume removed, a comparison of the FMP model with an alternative model that allows for independent management (FMP-IND) showed significant differences, in terms of total volume removed at the end of the horizon. Global management leads to a reduction of about 8.6% in the total removed volume; however, it will ensure a heritage of well-diversified stands, in terms of age classes. The results highlight the importance of managing multi-stakeholder forest areas as a whole, instead of being managed independently, if the aim is to assure more sustainable management of forest resources in the mid and long term. Pine wilt disease (PWD), caused by the plant–parasitic nematode Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, has become a severe environmental problem in the Iberian Peninsula with devastating effects in Pinus pinaster forests. Despite the high levels of this species' susceptibility, previous studies reported heritable resistance in P. pinaster trees. Understanding the basis of this resistance can be of extreme relevance for future programs aiming at reducing the disease impact on P. pinaster forests. In this study, we highlighted the mechanisms possibly involved in P. pinaster resistance to PWD, by comparing the transcriptional changes between resistant and susceptible plants after infection. Our analysis revealed a higher number of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in resistant plants (1,916) when compared with susceptible plants (1,226). Resistance to PWN is mediated by the induction of the jasmonic acid (JA) defense pathway, secondary metabolism pathways, lignin synthesis, oxidative stress response genes, and resistance genes. Quantification of the acetyl bromide-soluble lignin confirmed a significant increase of cell wall lignification of stem tissues around the inoculation zone in resistant plants. In addition to less lignified cell walls, susceptibility to the pine wood nematode seems associated with the activation of the salicylic acid (SA) defense pathway at 72 hpi, as revealed by the higher SA levels in the tissues of susceptible plants. Cell wall reinforcement and hormone signaling mechanisms seem therefore essential for a resistance response.

The impact of biodiversity loss on the functioning of forest ecosystems has become a central issue in ecology. Most reports of the positive effects of tree mixture on the biodiversity–productivity relationship focus on mixtures that combine tree species with contrasting traits. Nevertheless, little is known about how coniferous mixtures of the same genus affect forest productivity, what mechanisms are involved, and how the understory is affected. Here, we assessed the effect of mixed versus monospecific stands of Pinus sylvestris L. and P. pinaster Ait. on productivity, its impact on the understory, and its relationship with soil water and fertility, based on research with six triplets (6 triplets × 3 forest stands × 1 plot = 18 plots) in North-Central Spain. Each triplet consisted of two plots dominated either by P. sylvestris or P. pinaster and of one mixed plot that contained both species. Productivity, at the stand and neighborhood levels, and the understory richness, and soil water and fertility at the stand level were analyzed. A positive effect of pine mixture on productivity was observed at the smaller spatial scale, and it had no negative effect on the understory richness. The greater space-use efficiency (higher tree density and basal area) of both Pinus species in the admixtures was related to soil water and fertility niche complementarity. Pine wilt disease (PWD), caused by the plant–parasitic nematode Bursaphelenchus xylophilus , has become a severe environmental problem in the Iberian Peninsula with devastating effects in Pinus pinaster forests. Despite the high levels of this species' susceptibility, previous studies reported heritable resistance in P. pinaster trees. Understanding the basis of this resistance can be of extreme relevance for future programs aiming at reducing the disease impact on P. pinaster forests. In this study, we highlighted the mechanisms possibly involved in P. pinaster resistance to PWD, by comparing the transcriptional changes between resistant and susceptible plants after infection. Our analysis revealed a higher number of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in resistant plants (1,916) when compared with susceptible plants (1,226). Resistance to PWN is mediated by the induction of the jasmonic acid (JA) defense pathway, secondary metabolism pathways, lignin synthesis, oxidative stress response genes, and resistance genes. Quantification of the acetyl bromide-soluble lignin confirmed a significant increase of cell wall lignification of stem tissues around the inoculation zone in resistant plants. In addition to less lignified cell walls, susceptibility to the pine wood nematode seems associated with the activation of the salicylic acid (SA) defense pathway at 72 hpi, as revealed by the higher SA levels in the tissues of susceptible plants. Pinewood nematode (PWN, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus) is the causal agent of pine wilt disease (PWD), which severely affects Pinus pinaster stands in southwestern Europe. Despite the high susceptibility of P. pinaster, individuals of selected half-sib families have shown genetic variability in survival after PWN inoculation, indicating that breeding for resistance can be a valuable strategy to control PWD. In this work, RNA-seq data from susceptible and resistant plants inoculated with PWN were used for SNP discovery and analysis. A total of 186,506 SNPs were identified, of which 31 were highly differentiated between resistant and susceptible plants, including SNPs in genes involved in cell wall lignification, a process previously linked to PWN resistance. Fifteen of these SNPs were selected for validation through Sanger sequencing and 14 were validated. To evaluate SNP-phenotype associations, 40 half-sib plants were genotyped for six validated SNPs. Associations with phenotype after PWN inoculation were found for two SNPs in two different genes (MEE12 and PCMP-E91), as well as two haplotypes of HIPP41, although significance was not maintained following Bonferroni correction. SNPs here detected may be useful for the development of molecular markers for PWD resistance and should be further investigated in future association studies.

Key message: Exogenous MJ does not alter the resin duct structure of pines in the cortex, but increases the number, density and mean size of resin ducts in the secondary xylem, particularly in Pinus sylvestris and P. radiata. Methyl jasmonate (MJ) is an organic compound capable of modulating defence responses in plants. Exogenous application of MJ has been shown to modify the structure of the resin canal system in conifers by inducing the formation of dense concentric bands of traumatic resin ducts in the xylem. Because inducibility of resin ducts has been little explored across pine species, 3-year-old Pinus pinaster, P. pinea, P. sylvestris and P. radiata trees were sprayed with 0, 25 and 50 mM solutions of MJ, and plant growth, external symptoms and histology were assessed 60 days after treatment. Exogenous application of MJ diminished primary or secondary growth in all species (61 and 25%, respectively) and caused needle damage in P. sylvestris. Exogenous MJ did not alter the resin duct structure of Pinus spp. in the cortex. In the secondary xylem, however, the effect of MJ differed considerably between species: ducts, duct density and area covered by ducts increased in P. sylvestris and P. radiata, but not in P. pinaster and P. pinea. In MJ 50 mM-treated trees, resin duct abundance peaked at the first half of the ring in P. sylvestris and at one-third distance from the previous ring in P. radiata. In MJ treated P. radiata trees, large traumatic axial resin ducts, 120–160 µm in diameter, were aligned in the secondary xylem. The study helps to elucidate macroevolutionary aspects of inducibility of resin-based defences in the genus Pinus, where varying responses to MJ could reveal different defence strategies among species.
