This study aims to scrutinize the determinants of manufacturing exports in several ASEAN countries, specifically: Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, and Vietnam. It adopts a panel data regression using the random effects model to predict manufacturing export value using structural (economic complexity and human capital) and macroeconomic (real effective exchange rate, foreign direct investment, and inflation) variables. The research finds that foreign direct investment, human capital, real effective exchange rate, and inflation are positive and statistically significant predictors of manufacturing exports in these ASEAN countries. However, the positive correlation between the real effective exchange rate and manufacturing exports is against previous literature arguing that a currency’s depreciation drives export competitiveness. The findings suggest that currency appreciation can enhance a country’s export performance as exports’ input products are cheaper than before. Additionally, the positive influence of inflation on exports can be explained by the subsequent increase in consumption from foreign countries. Therefore, in addition to managing their exchange rates, countries must develop their human capital and attract more foreign investments to enhance their export performance.

This study aims to analyze the effect of logistics performance on manufacturing export in 18 members of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (AEPC) during 2010-2018 period. Logistics performance was represented by the Logistics Performance Index published by the World Bank biennially. This study uses panel data regression method to see the effects of LPI overall, each component of LPI, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) Per capita, total population, and real exchange rate on manufacturing export. The result showed that the LPI overall had no significant effect on manufacturing export in 18 APEC’s members. However, the estimation of each component shows significant result. Custom, Infrastructure, and Logistics Quality and Competence have a significant positive effect. Meanwhile, Shipment has no significant effect, and Tracing, Timeliness components showed significant negative effect.

Drawing on Dutch disease theory, we assess how the recent housing boom has contributed to a decline in China's manufacturing exports. Using Chinese city and enterprise panel data from 2004 to 2013, our analysis reveals that Dutch disease indeed exists and that the housing price increase has played a very important role in affecting China's manufacturing exports through two key channels: resource movement effect and spending effect. Specifically, this paper found that: (i) the housing price increase hindered labor flowing into China's manufacturing industry (resource movement effect) and caused higher inflation (spending effect); (ii) the housing boom clearly impeded China's manufacturing exports, especially after the outbreak of the global economic crisis in 2008; (iii) the impacts of the housing price increase on China's manufacturing exports were heterogenous, and were more significant for labor‐intensive manufacturing businesses, businesses that were foreign owned, less R&D intensive, or located in the central and western regions. Manufacturing export and entrepreneurship have become increasingly important for economic development. However, there is limited information systems research examining the role of regional ICT infrastructure, knowledge infrastructure, democracy, and the number of foreign tourists for entrepreneurship activities and manufacturing export. This study investigates the impact of ICT infrastructure, knowledge infrastructure, democracy, and the number of foreign tourists on entrepreneurship activities and manufacturing export. Using The PLS-SEM, we found that foreign tourists positively and significantly impact manufacturing exports while knowledge infrastructure and entrepreneurship activities negatively affect manufacturing exports. The findings also supported the significant role of ICT infrastructure and foreign tourists in entrepreneurship activities. This result offers practical implications for policymakers in designing a roadmap of entrepreneurship and manufacturing export policies in developing countries.

Environmental regulation is an effective tool to control environmental problems caused by foreign trade. Research conclusions are inconsistent on the relationship between environmental regulations and exports. Based on the Heckscher-Ohlin-Vanek model, this paper provides an empirical analysis for examination the effect of environmental regulations on manufacturing exports, adopting panel data of 16 sectors from China's manufacturing during 2005-2015. Material capital, human capital, technology input and foreign direct investment are simultaneously selected as independent variables to explore the export impact of corresponding changes in these endowments. The pollution intensity index was introduced to categorise different manufacturing sectors. Results indicated that China's environmental regulations intensity play different roles in the manufacturing sectors with different pollution levels. Stricter environmental regulation improves the export of intensive pollution manufacturing sectors but hinders exports in light pollution sectors. Meanwhile, other endowment factors also exert varying effects in the light, moderate and intensive pollution manufacturing sectors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Investment in ICT infrastructure development is crucial to international trade through its provision of reliable interconnectedness via communication. This can be augmented via institutional intervention, which addresses opportunistic or rent-seeking behaviours of ICT infrastructure providers and reduces operational costs, among others. However, ICT infrastructural provision in West Africa remains low, necessitating the current drive by the regional economic community (ECOWAS) to make some advancement in this regard for enhanced trade outcomes of members. With the aim of unbundling institutional framework in the infrastructure-export nexus, this study empirically examines the relationship between manufacturing export and ICT infrastructure and articulates how economic and political institutions influence such interaction. Focusing on 14 West African countries, the study uses the Systems Generalised Method of Moments (SGMM) technique to address possible issues of endogeneity due to reverse causality. The results reveal that in the face of improved economic and political institutions, particularly those related to enforcement of contracts, the influence of ICT infrastructure in strengthening the exporting capacity from the manufacturing sector is greater. In addition, some measures of economic and political institutions matter more than others. The study recommends that ECOWAS countries promote better institutional quality, particularly in terms of transparency, accountability, corruption control, regulatory quality and the rule of law. This paper studies the duration of Chinese manufacturing exports and its determinants, using disaggregated 6-digit level Harmonized System product trade data from 1995 to 2007. Cox proportional hazard, Weibull and exponential models are used to examine the effects of various factors on export duration. It is revealed that export duration tends to be rather short-lived. It is also found that GDP and GDP per capita of the export destination have positive effects on export duration, while trade relationships with distant and landlocked countries are generally of shorter duration. In addition, export duration is longer for differentiated and parts and components products, as well as products with large initial trade values. WTO membership is also important for longer export duration. Our empirical analysis suggests that developed markets, such as the USA and the EU, are important to China, and should still be the major sources for Chinese export growth in the long run. Moreover, technical innovation of firms and free trade agreement negotiations will be helpful for sustainable export growth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With global warming, extreme climate and other environmental issues becoming increasingly prominent, the impact of import and export trade on Marine ecological environment has attracted more and more attention. Based on the current situation of China's manufacturing export, this paper discusses the deficiencies of China's current trade environment and its impact on the Marine ecological environment from the perspectives of policy norms, export structure, technology and concepts. The results show that China is at the low end of the global value chain, the role of processing and manufacturing makes China bear more pollution while becoming a manufacturing power, and taking labor-intensive and resource-intensive industries as China's comparative advantages to participate in the international division of labor will have a negative impact on China's Marine ecological environment.
